Book Description

Bob Davis, the founder and former CEO of Lycos, is one of the most successful businessmen of recent times. In five short and exhilarating years, he turned a $2-million investment into a $5.4-billion company, built an audience of 91 million people, and established the Internet's largest global network with a presence in an industry-leading 41 countries.

Speed Is Life is his story from the front lines of business—and his lessons can be applied to every company. He discusses how quickly companies must act in order to seize new opportunities; explains why size is important in a global economy; and highlights the critical importance of creating and extending a company's brand. The lessons he reveals are not narrowly drawn from or intended for Internet managers alone. The fact is, business—whatever business you are in—is first and foremost about making a profit, something he was able to accomplish even in his earliest days at Lycos. The way to do that, from Davis's perspective, is to be great at what you do, to make every moment with a customer a moment of truth, and to build a leading organization by attracting and hiring a world-class team.

But Speed Is Life is much more than a handbook on how to win. Davis also understands the limits of the much-hyped New Economy. And he understands that the future lies in the synergy between traditional companies and their Web counterparts. It is a fascinating first-hand look at the big picture by a man who helped paint it and is this year's must-read business book. Told in the no-nonsense, straight-from-the-hip approach that helped Davis make Lycos an industry dynamo, and illustrated with stories of Lycos's and other companies' successes—and failures—Davis offers an invaluable insider's perspective on how business works and how to stay one step ahead in today's ever more competitive world.

Speed Is Life will grip you, guide you, and inspire you.

5 out of 5 stars The fastest book ever!! ALL THUMBS UP!!!.......2002-10-20

Packed with great tips, real life tips, not fiction. I've never read a book as devotedly as I read this one. 'Speed is Life' or 'Life is Speed'. True!!! Bob is not only a great success, but is able to tell how he did it, which most people can't. Having a great experience and being able to tell & teach it to others so that they too can be great, is what I consider Bob's greatness. The great principles in this book could be applied to selling peanuts as well as running any technologically sophisticated company in the world, even managing a family, relationship, making good grades at school, or landing a good job. I have made this book my business bible & reference point. If you ever think of making anything come out great & successful in today's world, GRAB this book first & don't part with it. Thank you Bob!!!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2002-02-18

Bob Davis' book is vastly superior to many CEO memoirs in its clarity, simplicity and sophistication. While much of his "Internet-is-changing-everything" spiel will seem rightfully dated, his core point - that speed has become a critical organizational imperative - will hit home with anyone competing in business today. We from getAbstract recommend this book more for its advice about building cultures of speed than for Davis' dot-com tales.

1 out of 5 stars Speed Kills.......2002-01-13

In the interest of speed, suffice to say that one minute spent on this book is a moment wasted.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, inspirational and instructive.......2001-09-06

I am an MBA graduate of Babson College, Bob Davis' alma mater, and I have heard Bob speak many times at Babson and at other venues over the last three years. When I heard from him that his book was being released, I knew that I would read it, and I hoped for the best. I was not disappointed.

Speed is Life, gives the reader an internal view into some of what was going on during the dot-com frenzy. It also includes valuable lessons that Bob was able to learn while being one of the leaders in this hypergrowth industry. The lessons are supported with real-life examples that clearly convey Bob's point as well as inspire an entrepreneur!

One last item that I can add is that the ideas that Bob writes about are not a result of 20/20 hindsight. When I sat down to hear Bob speak in September of 1999, when I was beginning my MBA, he was preaching the same lessons. First of which was - profitability is fundamental.

Davis was a hired gun who jammed, misfired, missed the mark, blew up in everyones face. Contrary to what he would have you believe, he didn't found Lycos -- he was brought in (admittedly on day two) by his pals at CMGI. The real story here is how and why did Davis blow it so bad and huge? He was "first mover" as much as Yahoo and he had every advantage they had, etc. -- except apparantly Yahoo's brains. (Davis's dim tough guy act isn't really an act at all -- its thye real Bob, rough and tough with muscle where gray matter should be.) So instead of being a category leader and defining early web brand and company, Lycos ends up being fourth in a race with three winners (AOL, MSN and Yahoo). Forget the laudantory blurbs -- all those folks are Davis's personal pals who thru barely legal scheming made a mint on Lycos inflated stock price. If you want management expertise, you'll get more out of "Body by Jake."

            Book Description

In the twenty-first century, the production and use of scientific knowledge is more regulated, commercialized, and participatory than at any other time in history. The stakes in understanding these changes are high for scientist and nonscientist alike: they challenge traditional ideas of intellectual work and property and have the potential to remake legal and professional boundaries and transform the practice of research. A critical examination of the structures of power and inequality these changes hinge upon, this book explores the implications for human health, democratic society, and the environment.

I purchased the Dummies book for Quicken 2006 mainly to handle my investments and bank accounts. I have Quicken Premier 2006. This book is poor for this purpose. It provided very limited information on these topics. In the end I had to work with the help documentation for my software. BTW, the software also has many deficiencies as well. My main "beef" is that it requires that you handle certificates of deposits (CD's) as investments. It does not allow input of data or analysis of CD's as an individual financial instrument.

I think that it was a great deal of help. The "Dummies" series of books on all subjects makes it easier to understand than the books that come with the product as they tend to put things in a language that is more understandable.

                Book Description

In this vivid and piercing memoir of his grandfather, noted novelist Kenji Jasper captures the story of his family and sheds a keen light on the urban and rural experiences of Black America.

Author Kenji Jasper only knew his maternal grandfather, Jesse Langley Sr., as a quiet man who smoked too many cigarettes, drank too much liquor and quoted the Bible like it was the only book he’d ever laid eyes on.

Jesse’s children rarely hugged him, and his nearly sixty years of marriage to Sally seemed cold and complicated. But when the man who declared himself “The Lone Ranger” passed away in late 2002, Kenji began a long and life-changing journey to learn more about the grandfather he barely knew. From the streets of his native Washington, D.C., to rural Virginia, North Carolina, and his home in Brooklyn, Jasper’s journey to find the truth leads him through three generations of stories, through tales of love and loss, loyalty and betrayal, addiction and redemption.

The House on Childress Street examines life, love, and survival through the eyes of one little family on one little block that somehow manages to speak for us all.

I think with this one, I've read all of Jasper's novels and I have to say this one was the best. Jasper starts off with the intention of writing about his grandfather, Jesse. Unfortunately, Jesse dies before Jasper can start the interview process so, he has to obtain insight about Jesse, the Lone Ranger, through the eyes of Jesse's children, brothers and other family members. It's sad that Jesse didn't live long enough for his real life story to be told. This results in the book being a mix of memories of Jesse and Jasper's memoirs. We don't really know what Jesse thought, felt, or actually experienced. We don't really know why he was such a hard-nosed husband and father. We do know that his family loved and respected him so, I guess that's all that matters.

                3 out of 5 stars Our Thoughts.......2006-09-08

The House on Childress Street (Childress Street) commences with the death of the author's (Kenji Jasper) maternal Grandfather and Jasper's then startling revelation that he didn't really know much about his Grandfather. Jasper perceives his maternal Grandfather as a dutiful provider yet loner within his family setting. Jasper lovingly refers to his maternal Grandfather as the "Lone Ranger". The memoir involves the author's quest to learn more about his maternal Grandfather's life and relationships with his wife, his children, his siblings and his friends. Initially, Jasper begins the journey with the working premise that his Grandfather was a man without emotions, a virtual recluse within his own family. However, through various interviews with family and friends who knew the Lone Ranger, Jasper discovers an array of factors that shaped the Lone Ranger's personality over time. Childress Street is written as a memoir, but reads more like a journal. Although Childress Street is somewhat unorganized in style, Jasper still manages to convey to the reader his staunch determination to discover who the Lone Ranger actually was. Along Jasper's quest to discover more about the Lone Ranger, Jasper manages to make strides in his own self-discovery as a young African American male trying to make his own way in present day American society. Jasper discovers that those past events that shaped the Lone Ranger, have created the man that Jasper himself has evolved to. With Childress Street Jasper allows the reader to reminisce with him about familiar themes that many African Americans may share, i.e. the Great Migration from the southern farms to northern factories by many African Americans during the 1930s' through the 1950's in order obtain advancement and opportunity; the deep spiritual connection of many African Americans to their churches and pastors; and past beliefs of the proper roles of African American women and men within the confines of matrimony.

                Recommended as light, easy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Insight into Black Male Psychology .......2006-07-19

This book was more than just a story about Jasper's family but also an opportunity to discuss psychological trends that are linked spiritually and scientifically to patterned behavior. I enjoyed Jasper's introjections about how discovering new things about his family helped him to better understand his identity.

The high points of course were the journey Jasper takes the reader on throughout the novel. The low points are Jasper's writing style, which is disconnected, conversational and at a lower level of intellect than what he could potentially write.

I guess in an attempt to capture more readers who typically read urban fiction, Jasper uses basic vocabulary. However, for a Morehouse grad, I am certain he could bridge the heady Colson Whitehead with the ghetto-drama Omar Tyree to create a truly captivating story and in depth read.

                3 out of 5 stars Biography of a Family.......2006-06-02

There is a saying that when a person dies, an entire library is lost for good. Loss and grief often lead people to wonder about what stories and lessons they missed out on, and after reflection, they may even wonder how well they really knew the loved one who has passed on. After the death of his grandfather, Kenji Jasper found himself wondering these very things, and in THE HOUSE ON CHILDRESS STREET we follow his search for answers about the life of his grandfather, a man affectionately known as "The Lone Ranger." Through the course of the book, he shares his memories, interviews family members about the life of his grandfather and along the way learns more about his family, and himself. In the end, he probably has as many questions as he does answers, but in spite of this, the process is one of healing and growth.

This book is probably more about Kenji Jasper's self-discovery than it is about his learning more about his grandfather. I loved the concept of the book and could relate to the author's need to take this particular journey, as I have found myself asking similar questions about my own loved ones after they passed away. There were times when his vivid imagery of times past, candid analysis, and probing questions about the meaning behind it all, held me captive as a reader. However, there were other times when the book got bogged down by details that I felt took away from the overall theme. For example, the book includes biographical sketches of many of the author's uncles and other extended family. While they contributed to what he learned about his grandfather, the often lengthy exploration of their respective lives distracted me and took away from the book's focus. Still, THE HOUSE ON CHILDRESS STREET is a book about the extraordinary impact of ordinary people on the lives of those around them, and will serve as a lasting legacy.

4 out of 5 stars This is the House that Jesse Built.......2006-05-17

Kenji Jasper presents his nonfiction debut in The House on Childress Street, a memoir about his family, most specifically his late maternal grandfather, Jesse Langley Sr. This book is a departure from the literary urban fiction Jasper is known for which includes Dark and Dakota Grand. In this sometimes slow moving tale, he is trying to come to grips with the remote, distant man who was the patriarch of the Langley clan. Jasper's quest was to understand how this man's influence drove the rest of the family and to understand the legacy he left.

Jesse Langley was considered a real man, albeit a complex man, to his family and his community. He went to work every day, provided a home and a paternal presence.
Childress Street was where Jesse Langley reigned supreme. It was where family and friends gathered and where no one ever questioned his remoteness, his acid tongue or his words and deeds. As is so often the case in African American families, his family was left with unanswered questions.

Jasper felt a need to find his grandfather's roots as if he was in a race to escape the madness that threatened to infiltrate his life. He and Jesse had planned a trip to Greenville, North Carolina, the old homestead but Jesse died a few weeks before their departure. Jasper made the trip by himself in 2004, met some of Jesse's brothers and asked them questions about him. Most they could not answer. For example, the mystery of who Jesse's mother was and what happened to her remains a mystery. Jasper came home with lots of stories but realized the answers he was looking for in the old cotton fields of Greenville were not to be found.

The story meandered around trying to find a frame of reference jumping from Jesse's life, the dissection of Jasper's parents' marriage, to observations on to the construction of the Black family and to his childhood and coming-of-age. He attempted to juxtapose his own life and that of his grandfather's but it never quite fit. The continuous scrutinizing of his parent's lives plagues this discourse even as Jasper yearns for a family of his own that so far has eluded his thirty years on this earth.

This book was as much a commentary on the Black family; a dissection of the history of a particular family as well as a delving into the psyche of the man who loved him and who he loved but did not know. Jesse Langley Sr. led a hard scrabble life in the South, came to Washington, D.C., married, raised a family and died like so many black men of his era. Part memoir, part sociological study, this book was a much needed catharsis for Jasper. I would recommend to those who are interested in studying the Black family.

                Book Description

In Encyclopedia of Celtic Myth and Legend, authors John and Caitlin Matthews have compiled one of the most comprehensive collections of Celtic lore ever, drawing from every known source from the Celts' well-known classics, to neglected sources and forgotten archives. Their fresh translations and lucid commentary make this an essential text for students, researchers, and indeed, for anyone who has ever felt drawn to the Celtic spirit.
The tales and poems are arranged thematically in keeping with the bardic traditions from which they come, and transport the reader to the shores of distant lands, populated by heroes and heroines, gods and kings, fairy folk, maidens and magicians. Here the ancient legends unfold, telling of battles and births, voyages and visions, love and longing, wooings and wisdom, dreams and vengeance.
This collection of Celtic lore represents the lifetime's work of two internationally acclaimed writers. It is their hope that it will inspire those who wish
to inherit the "bright knowledge"-the glefisa-of the ancestors, that they may illumine their own lives with this wisdom and, in turn, pass it on to their descendants.

2 out of 5 stars A decent introduction to Celtic myth, but lack of annotation makes it a poor resource. Not recommended.......2006-08-28

While this is an accessible, fairly broad introduction to Celtic myths, this text lacks commentary and is poorly edited, making it a mediocre introduction at best. The Encylopedia of Celtic Myth and Legend contains a decent range of myths, grouped by theme, with a short introduction to each myth. The range of stories is fairly broad and contains a number of important, highly referenced tales. However, the book obviously doesn't contain all of the myths, including some important stories. The theme grouping can make it difficult to keep characters and time lines straight, but it is historically accurate. The introductions to the myths are limited, often informal, and while they do give a sometimes useful plot overview, don't provide much context or information about the myth or its setting within the Celtic mythos. The myths themselves contain no footnotes, minimal name translations, and are poorly edited (there's a lot of missing punctuation and a few typos). The lack of commentary and information makes the myths less accessible to the reader: character identification is difficult, plot cycles and timelines are confused, and cultural notes and explanations are lost. On the whole, this is a mediocre introduction: the myths are there, but they are hard to interpret and not very useful to the reader. However, this book does appear to be easier to find at local libraries than longer, more annotated Celtic mythology collections, so it may be a good introduction to a reader curious about the myths but unwilling to buy a book without reading more. I recommend it only on that basis: borrow it and read it for an idea of Celtic mythology, but purchase a different book for in depth study.

Without a doubt, the Celtic myths themselves are complex, enjoyable, epic, and interesting. The scope of genres, from invasions to births to cattle raids to voyages to adventures to deaths (and many more) allow for stories on any subject and for any occasion. Some of the characters are gods, some demi-gods, some epic heroes, and the events are all compelling and mythic. Almost everything, from battles to feats to love, happens on an exaggerated scale, but the exaggeration renders the emotions and characters more vibrant, making them hyper-realistic rather than unrealistic or difficult to connect with. Overall, the myths themselves can't be faulted. The texts can be repetitive, either because of style or because of the way that tales were written and transcribed, but at its best the language is descriptive and invokes interest and emotion in the reader. If Celtic myths interest you, this text can serve as an introduction to the characters, stories, and style that makes up Celtic mythology, and it may therefore be a useful resource.

While the myths can't be faulted, there are a number of problems with the Matthews's editing, compiling, and annotation. The editing is shoddy, and the missing punctuation and spelling errors are both frustrating and confusing--because of the writing style and Gaelic phrases, it's sometimes difficult to determine what are errors and what are meaningful, original inclusions and words. The myths in this compilation are fairly broad but by no means all encompassing, and the editors often reference other texts (usually their own) for more myths and stories about the characters. Finally, the dearth of annotation and information about the myths keeps this compilation from being truly useful. There is introductory information that mentions characters, a little bit of context, and the manuscript the myth is based on/take from, but these introductions are short, informal, and don't provide nearly enough information about time line or characters. The myths themselves are completely unannotated, which makes for smoother reading but doesn't provide the reader any information about details, connections, or explanations that they might be missing. As a result, this complication is good only for some basic sampling of the Celtic myths--as an in depth resource and source of information, it is pretty much worthless.

If Celtic mythology interests you but you don't know much about it and want a quick introduction to the myths themselves, consider looking for this book at a local library. To my knowledge, it is fairly easy to find locally while other, better books of Celtic myth may only be available if ordered or bought online. As an introduction, this book provides an overview of the style and stories of Celtic myth. However, I don't recommend buying this book or using it as a resource. Between the shoddy editing, missing stories, and lack of additional information, it isn't worth owning.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!.......2005-12-07

The two idiots that have reviewed this book are obviously out of their minds or haven't read that much about Celtic studies. Caitlin and John Matthews are recognized Scholars and experts in the fields of Celtic, Arthurian, and Grail studies - and this collection doesn't fail to provide plenty of gold to mine. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Celtic mythology that would like to become more informed.

                1 out of 5 stars Romantic Drivel.......2005-11-27

For anyone who is interested in Celtic myth and legend, the Matthews may seem like a perfectly good starting point. The only problem is that, as the first review of this book says, it only helps to reinforce Romantic fantasies of what the Celts were like. Caitlain Matthews is especially known for this by academics as she makes two big mistakes over and over again: a.) she assumes that all Celtic cultures are the same and b.) she makes no differentiations between different time periods. This book is no different and does not help to further true academic studies of Celtic literature.

Author without any chemical education wrote a book that must be called "bucket chemist reference book". Hundreds of funy statements with many errors. If you are at least at BSc, dont buy the book. I have background in detergents and many statements are funny, non-professiona. many things he calls "synergistics" are basic science. If you want to develop business, hire a professional.

The book was outdated and it does not help much in formula details for the reader to formulate their own detergents as the title dictates. Yes, compounding the chemical of manufacturers intruduced heavily inside this book profits more than the green horn readers.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good and Detailed.......2006-02-05

This book was written by an author who actually did formulation himself. The book is very instructive. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars About the author:.......2004-05-30

As the author, I'd like to share a little history about myself: I worked 5 years for a major west-coast chemical manufacturer, then spent 8 years on my own compounding, formulating, and selling industrial detergents and solvents. I believe 13 years in the business more than qualifies me to write the book.

In the beginning, I found, and bought, many expensively priced formula books. However, although they contained plenty of formulas, they lacked in the basic how and why of detergent compounding. Worse, they were so technically oriented I could not understand the text. What I wanted most was just a straightforward book on the craft of formulating and compounding industrial detergents. Therefore, I ended up writing "How to Formulate and Compound Industrial Detergents."

This book will give the novice a basic understanding of the terminology, products, and methods available to the detergent formulator. I have tried not to be too technical, keeping in mind that the beginner does not want to be inundated with science, but would rather deal with simple and practical applications. Nonetheless, some familiarity of the detergent science is necessary, if only to deal intelligently with suppliers (talk the same language) and to fully understand the formulas themselves.

For the reader interested in the more technical aspects of detergency, the books listed in the reference section provide in-depth technical information for further study.

In addition, all the expert technical advice you need is available free from the companies supplying raw materials, as well as free seminars that they host every year. My advice is to read my book first to get a basic understanding of compounding before talking to the company experts.

If I may be allowed to boast just a bit, my book is still the only one I've ever seen that simply and clearly explains the basics of chemical compounding to the novice. In many ways, it has become a little classic among compounders, especially among those who started from the ground up, as I did, without the benefit of a chemistry degree.

Many thanks to all those who have bought the book and who have been so supportive.

                  Book Description

                  * Leading scientists set out how the world's energy systems can be reformed to eliminate energy poverty and to ensure climate protection
                  * 2.4 billion people in developing countries desperately need electricity; industrialised countries must cut carbon emissions by 80% to avoid severe climate change
                  * Essential reading and reference for energy and development professionals

This third volume of World in Transition underscores the urgent need to transform global energy systems so that the world's population has access to energy based on renewable sources. This is necessary in order to protect the global climate and to liberate 2.4 billion people in developing countries from energy poverty. Such an approach would also yield a peace dividend by reducing dependence upon regionally concentrated oil reserves. Experts from the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU) stress that such a transformation of energy systems is feasible and fundable if rapid and resolute action is taken in the coming two decades. To this end, they propose a roadmap with specific milestones.
Ideal for professionals, researchers and consultants in the energy and environmental sectors as well as energy companies, policy-makers and corporate and academic libraries.
