                        Book Description

`Graeme Turner is one of the leading figures in cultural studies today. When his gaze turns to celebrity, the result is a readable and compelling

account of this most perplexing and infuriating of modern phenomena. Read on!' - Toby Miller, New York University

We cannot escape celebrity culture: it is everywhere. So just what is the cultural function of celebrity?

This is the first comprehensive overview of the production and consumption of celebrity from within cultural and media studies. The pervasive influence of contemporary celebrity, and the cultures it produces, has been widely noticed. Earlier studies, though, have tended to focus on the consumption of celebrity or on particular locations of celebrity - Hollywood, or the sports industries for instance. This book presents a broad survey across all media as well as a new synthesis of theoretical positions, that will be welcomed by all students of media and cultural studies. Among its attributes are the following:

-It provides an overview and evaluation of the key debates surrounding the definition of celebrity, its history, and its social and cultural function.

-It examines the `celebrity industries’: the PR and publicity structures that manufacture celebrity.

-It looks at the cultural processes through which celebrity is consumed.

-It draws examples from the full range of contemporary media - film, television, newspapers, magazines and the web.

                          Book Description

The mass media make it possible for fame to be enhanced and transformed posthumously. What does it mean to fans when a celebrity dies, and how can death change the way that celebrities are perceived and celebrated? How do we mourn and remember? What can different forms of communication reveal about the role of media in our lives?

Through a provocative look at the lives and legacy of popular musicians from Elvis to Tupac and from Louis Prima to John Lennon, Afterlife as Afterimage analyzes the process of posthumous fame to give us new insights into the consequences of mediation, and it illuminates the complex nature of fandom, community formation, and identity construction.

Understanding Media cites current scholarship to shed light on how celebrities are manufactured by media and why audiences respond as they do. With case studies ranging from King Louis XIV to pop star Kylie Minogue, it examines the construction of celebrity in four concepts: history, text, production, and audience. Areas of discussion include:

5 out of 5 stars Best book available on the KID for players up to 2000 USCF.......2001-04-03

This book is absolutely excellent - it is a shame that it is out of print.

The book features a rather unique approach to learning the opening - pawn structure. Each chapter focuses on a different characteristic structure arising out of each of the major variations ; saemisch, classical, orthodox, yugoslav, panov, four pawns, averback, etc. etc.

Each pawn structure is carefully dissected as to where the optimal piece placement is, typical and recurring themes and ideas, and finally any tactical motifs that are regular.

Each chapter concludes with a couple of Grandmaster level games illustrating the material covered.

At the end of the book ,there is a statistical survey of each variation, it strategic and tactical complexity, and its tournament results in master level play.

If you play the KID, or would like to, grab this book wherever you can!!

5 out of 5 stars Learn openings by structure, not moves........2000-02-22

I own the series of Mastering the Openings books - on the King's Indian, the Benoni/Benko Gambit, the Spanish, the French, and the Nimzoindian - and love them. The only one I can criticize is the one on the Nimzo, by Tony Kosten. He doesn't break the structures down the same way the other books do. The others, this one included, teach the openings based on the central pawn structure, which is what guides the middlegame plans. Developing players (under 2000 ELO) will find these books very helpful in understanding these openings.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the KID for club players.......1998-08-24

It's unfortunate that this book is no longer readily available because this is the way the openings should be taught to club players. Rather than give numerous variations or even annotated games, Bellin & Ponzetto give schematic intros to annotated games that illustrate strategic and tactical themes in the major variations of the KID (and not divided up by the variation's name, but by its pawn structure). I personally found this extremely effective and wish similar books were published in all my openings. Books like this are timeless and need to be reprinted often because they focus on ideas, not the latest theory. I do not own the other two books in this series on the Benoni and the Spanish (I play neither), but I have seen them and they, too, are very good. If you see them, buy them.

In the most recent edition of this acclaimed HTML guide, Musciano and Kennedy look closely at every aspect of HTML and show how to use it wisely to create top-quality Web pages. The book is up-to-date, covering HTML 4, Netscape Navigator 4, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4, and the various extensions of each.

HTML: The Definitive Guide is aimed at beginners as well as those who have more practice in Web-page creation. The authors assume at least a basic knowledge of computers, including how to use a word processor or text editor and how to deal with files. They teach you that learning HTML is like learning any other language and that reading a book of rules can only take you so far. Readers begin writing what may be their first Web page just two pages into the book's second chapter. From there on, they provide a wide range of HTML coding to allow readers to learn from good examples. The book includes a handy "cheat sheet" of HTML codes for quick reference. --Elizabeth Lewis

                              Book Description

HTML and its XML-based descendant, XHTML, are the fundamental languages for working on the web, and the new edition of our popular HTML guide offers web developers a better way to become fluent in these languages. HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide, 5th Edition is the most comprehensive, up-to-date book available on HTML and XHTML. It covers Netscape Navigator 6, Internet Explorer 6, HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0, CSS2, and all of the features supported by the popular web browsers.

Learning HTML and XHTML is like learning any new language. Most students first immerse themselves in examples. Studying others is a natural way to learn; however, it's as easy to learn bad habits through imitation as it is to acquire good ones. The better way to become HTML-fluent is through a comprehensive reference that covers the language syntax, semantics, and variations in detail and demonstrates the difference between good and bad usage.

In HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide, the authors cover every element of HTML/XHTML in detail, explaining how each element works and how it interacts with other elements. Tips about HTML/XHTML style help you write documents ranging from simple online documentation to complex presentations. With hundreds of examples, the book gives you models for writing your own effective web pages and for mastering advanced features like style sheets and frames.

HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide, 5th Edition, shows how to:

The book comes with a handy quick-reference card listing HTML/XHTML tags.

I have the 3rd edition and use it most everyday in my job. I figured it would be a bit outdated so I bought this latest version. The new version is essentially the exact same as the old version and I feel like I wasted my money. It's also missing the handy quick reference the older version had. However, if you don't have an earlier version, I would definitely recommend it. It's indispensable.

                              5 out of 5 stars Yup, it's definitive (complete).......2007-06-08

I wanted a complete reference & guide to html/xhtml and that's what I got. I didn't want to be ignorant about any features. I didn't want to be left in the dark about anything. This book has all the info I wanted, and much more. In fact in a way it has too much info. It has info about tags, attributes, and other features that are obsolete, deprecated, or not supported by any browsers. You can skip over those rather than slogging your way through every word in the book. Maybe it's just me, but one downside to this book for me is that the writing style tends to be convoluted, verbose, and somewhat boring. I had some difficulty staying focused and concentrating on this book. But since it fulfilled the reason I got this book, I still give it 5 stars. So if you're looking for a complete book, don't worry, it's complete.

4 out of 5 stars Just what's needed for those HTML questions you have..........2006-12-18

If you do web development, you should have one solid HTML/XHTML reference guide on your bookshelf. This one ranks up there... HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide (6th Edition) by Chuck Musciano and Bill Kennedy. Although the CSS and XML sections are a little light, the core HTML and XHTML information is all you could ask for.

Contents: HTML, XHTML, and the World Wide Web; Quick Start; Anatomy of an HTML Document; Text Basics; Rules, Images, and Multimedia; Links and Webs; Formatted Lists; Cascading Style Sheets; Forms; Tables; Frames; Executable Content; Dynamic Documents; Mobile Devices; XML; XHTML; Tips, Tricks, and Hacks; HTML Grammar; HTML/XHTML Tag Quick Reference; Cascading Style Sheet Properties Quick Reference; The HTML 4.01 DTD; The XHTML 1.0 DTD; Character Entities; Color Names and Values; Netscape Layout Extensions; Index

This book does a good job in blending a bit of tutorial information with a lot of reference material. All the HTML tags that exist are documented, along with whether it's an extension/deprecated/archaic, what type of browser support is involved in using the tag, and all the attributes and locations where it can be used. I found that I was catching some tags and nuances that I had overlooked in the past, even after having done web coding for many, many years. The book also has material on Cascading Style Sheets and XML, but I found that less useful than the HTML contents. The basics of those two technologies are covered, but not at the level I'd want in a definitive guide. While I think that you can't ignore CSS in an HTML book any more, I just wouldn't recommend this as an "all-in-one" book to cover both. But other than that, this is a book that I'll want to keep around for those strange times when my HTML tags just aren't working like they're supposed to...

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide, Indeed.......2006-12-09

Calling this book "The Definitive Guide" is not a misnomer, for that's what it is. I guess you could learn HTML and XHTML from scratch with this book, but I wouldn't advise it. (If you are just beginning you should check out O'Reilly's "Head First HTML with CSS and XHTML.") Weighing in at over 600 pages means that if it ain't described in here you probably shouldn't be doin' it! And if it is described in here, it's described clearly and accurately.

4 out of 5 stars HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide (6th Edition).......2006-11-28

When I opened this book I was a bit surprised, it wasn't quite what I expected. I have gotten use to O'Reilly books having lots of examples and codes snippets. And the first thing I noticed about this book was that it contains a lot more words than code. That said, this is my first "Definitive Guide" O'Reilly book, so this format may be the norm, I don't know.

This book does a thorough job of going over each of the HTML/XHTML tags and their attributes one at a time. The authors devote a couple of paragraphs to each tag describing its function and outlining its future in HTML/XHTML and once and awhile they throw in a line or two of code.

While the authors do devote most of the book to HTML / XHTML they take a brief look at cascading style sheets, executable content such as JavaScript, dynamic content, mobile devices and XML. While I would expect to find such information in a book like this, I would like to note that readers shouldn't expect to get more than a preface or introduction into those topics from this book. The book concludes by discussing XHTML and providing the reader with some useful tips.

Like many books the jewel is found at the end. This book includes eight appendices some of which I found quite interesting and useful. The appendices are as follows: A: HTML Grammar; B: HTML/XHTML Tag Quick Reference; C: Cascading Style Sheet Properties Quick Reference; D: The HTML 4.01 DTD; E: The XHTML 1.0 DTD; F: Character Entities; G: Color Names and Values; H: Netscape Layout Extensions. The DTD sections I found very interesting, it was neat to see the definition side of HTML & XHTML. And of course the quick references are always useful and usually the section of the book I turn to when I pull it off the shelf.

                              CONCLUSION
                              --
Like I mentioned at the beginning, I was surprised by the format of the book, however I do think it is a good resource for HTML/XHTML. While it is "The Definitive Guide" covering all of the markup tags and attributes it is definitely not a Cookbook or Nutshell book. I would recommend this book to those looking for a reference that is detailed and in a dictionary type format. If you are looking for lots of examples and recipes you will want to look at other books in the O'Reilly library. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because I think it is a good reference, but in my opinion I didn't find the format very appealing.

                              Book Description

A notable twentieth-century feminist and educator, Mary Ingraham Bunting was president of Radcliffe College during the tempestuous sixties, dean of Douglass College, special assistant to the president of Princeton, and the first woman to serve on the Atomic Energy Commission. She was also a respected microbiolist who did groundbreaking research at Yale. Above all, she is important because she was one of the first to perceive, and come up with remedies for, the ways in which American society was stifling women's aspirations and thwarting their achievements.

5 out of 5 stars Polly Bunting: Effective and Champion of Women's Education.......2007-03-10

This excellent biolgraphy of Polly Bunting, the founder of the Radcliffe Institute, who began the difficult process of integrating undergraduate women into Harvard College and Dartmouth, has been shockingly neglected in the literary press. A meticulously researched, sympathetic history of this extraordinary woman, who understood about working "outside the box" yet within the strictures of academia, this book deserves many readers. Polly Bunting was a scientist, honored in her time but extremely modest, who never abandoned her work, though she put it on the sidelines to bring up her children; she was a college administrator (President of Radcliffe College and Douglas College) who was always thinking of how to make a difference to the intellectual life of women, not just in their undergraduate life but, even more, in their future lives. The institution called the Radcliffe Institute would not exist today without her energy and imagination, and her original concept for the Institute may well, it is hoped, be replicated by other institutions. Polly Bunting was a modest woman but an extremely effective one. It is, perhaps, her very modesty that has made this book so unfairly neglected. Do buy it! Perhaps someone will publish it as a paperback one of these days.

In her biography of Polly Bunting, Elaine Yaffe captures the subtle essence of a woman who was unusual for her time and for any time. From a very young age she was engaged in issues of learning. She pursued this to excellence in scientific study and then turned to other pursuits. Unlike some scholars she had a side of warmth and nurturance that she learned from her parents and close, extended family that permeated her life as a wife, mother, farmer and family provider. She had a clarity of thought that was not restricted by custom or social constraints. She was both a profoundly practical person and a free thinker. Thank you, Ms. Yaffe for telling Polly Bunting's story with such grace, clarity and gripping story telling.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Read About an Intriguing Woman.......2006-06-23

Exhaustively researched and deftly written, this bio of a member of the "Greatest Generation" portrays a respected feminist and scholar's life from her beginnings as a gifted microbiologist to her Radcliffe presidency in the turbulent '60s. What reverberates the most about Bunting is her ability to adapt to challenges in her personal life (she was widowed early with four young children) as well as her humanity and open-mindedness when forced to deal with campus radicalism, especially in contrast with the genteel 1950s. Her early love of nature stayed with her throughout her life; she kept bees almost up until her death in 1997. Yaffe writes clearly and with mastery of the details of Bunting's multi-faceted career, from her rapport with students to her topless gardening.

4 out of 5 stars Help in Understanding the World of Jesus.......2003-09-18

The world of Jesus Christ was hardly static. Uprisings, rebellions, and subversive groups popped up all of the time, especially in Jewish lands where Roman occupation was equal to slavery in the eyes of most Jewish people. This made rebellion almost a religious duty even though many of the religious authorities did not share this point of view. Some of the rebellious groups had limited success, others had disastrous ends. Bandits, Prophets, and Messiahs helps the reader understand the different movements in the days of Jesus and help modern readers understand why Jesus' message was so controversial, not just in terms of content, but politically and socially as well. The author looks at the historical realities of the Jewish people and the connection with religious and political figures that sprung up in the Roman Empire, particularly in Palestine, in the days of Jesus Christ and in the early New Testament days. Readers are able to distinguish those who might be "rebels without a cause" so to speak, and legitimate groups that had serious religious and/or political objectives. The author culled much of the information from lectures given to students which gives the work a scholarly feel in an accessible manner. The book contains a scripture cited index which will help readers who may be students researching a topic, preachers preparing a sermon or homily, or person who is fascinated by the background to the Bible.

When studying the New Testament you will run across books that deal with Pharisees, Sadducees, Scribes and Essenes and seeing there is such a glut of info on these it is amazing to realize that they comprised a very small segment of the population. What the ordinary citizenry of the time were doing is not usually reflected in the writings of these religious elites and this book delves into that area of popular movements surrounding the insulated lives of the rich and powerful that led to change and ultimately to the revolt of AD 66- 70. Within this context you will learn, among other things, of the Messianic expectations of the general populace that led to "false prophets" spoken of by Jesus. This book helps flesh out the bare-bones accounts within the Gospels by describing the backdrop wherein everything was played out in the first century AD.

This is a moderately difficult read that I found very, very informative (I have highlighted quite a few passages for further study). Succinct but thorough. -- Moza

An old maxim claims that, "History is written by the winners." That may be true, but it is also true that history is written by the literate elite of every society. Those with enough knowledge, motivation, and leisure time write the histories that inform the attitudes and opinions of the rest of us.

Unfortunately, the bulk of humanity does not consist of articulate, highly motivated, and independent elites. Thus, most histories end up biased in favor of society's masters, and against the proletariat.

One quick survey of the average New Testament history will demonstrate our fascination with kings (e.g.: Caesar), priests (e.g.: Ananus and Caiaphus), ethnarchs (e.g.: Herod Archelaus), tetrarchs (e.g.: Herod Philip and Herod Antipas), governors (e.g.: Pontius Pilate), prophets (e.g.: John the Baptist), pharisees (e.g.: Paul), sadducees (e.g.: Jonathan, son of Ananus), philosophers (e.g.: Philo of Alexandria), historians (e.g.: Josephus), rabbis (e.g.: Jesus), and other people of note. Very seldom do we examine the lives of the ordinary people who left little, or no, written records of their experience. Too quickly our image of first century, Palestinian life becomes colored by the proclaimed experiences of the elites. Too quickly we forget or dismiss the experiences of the illiterate majority, barely eaking out an existence in a subsistence economy.

By focusing his attentions on the miserable lives lived by the majority of the peasants, Professor Horsley gives us a more balanced view of Palestine in the time of Jesus and the earliest Church. He shows us a peasantry, not only resentful about Roman occupation and taxation, but also deeply distrustful of their own political and sacerdotal institutions. He shows us subsistence farmers pushed off their land, or ever more deeply into debt, by Roman and Jewish over-taxation. He places before our eyes people whose lives could end instantly and violently on the whim of a king, governor, or ordinary Roman soldier. He shows us a people yearning for their ancient and legitimate kings. He brilliantly paints the picture of a people pushed to the edge of life, and made ready for revolution, whether that be the political revolution of 66 a.d., or the revolutionary preaching of Good News by an itinerant Galilean rabbi.

Professor Horsley helps all of us to see first century Palestine more clearly: more honestly. For that alone, this book is worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent account of outrageous religious turmoil........1997-01-18

Chaos abounds between ancient Palestine and Rome in this historic look at early Christianity. Out of desperation due to oppresive Roman rule, Jewish Palestine revolts in a variety of unique ways. The proliferation of bandits is only the first indication of this troubled time. A host of diviners and self-made holy leaders gain following in Palestine as people seek a way out of the horrific situation. This book gives a stunning look at the incredible measures and actions a group will take when their way of life is being destroyed.

That the United States government engaged in dangerous biological research during World War II will come as no surprise to Americans jaded by revelations of secret medical experiments and radiation exposures. But that the accident-plagued facility where it happened--and continues to happen--is just off the coast of Long Island may alarm many readers of Michael Christopher Carroll's Lab 257. Carroll, an attorney by trade, gamely takes on complex microbiology and shady government record-keeping in telling the story of Plum Island, home of the Animal Disease Center--no place for a casual picnic. The lab, initially set up by the Army to research ways of destroying Soviet farm animals (and to keep them from destroying ours), has often dealt with bacteria and viruses that can be passed from animals to humans. Carroll draws compelling causal links between Plum Island and the introduction of Lyme disease, West Nile virus, and duck enteritis, all non-native germs that wreaked sudden havoc in North America, and all germs that Plum Island scientists were allegedly working with. With hurricanes and terrorists on his mind, Carroll asks readers to imagine a scenario in which the Plum Island lab might release pathogens into the most densely populated area in the country. He ends the book with two chilling questions. First, does the United States need a research facility that investigates animal pathogens with potential for human transmission? Second, considering that Plum Island never had a particularly good safety record, is it the right place for such a facility? Lab 257, while occasionally veering into unsupported speculation, introduces key questions to the debate on biological security in the 21st century. --Therese Littleton

                                Book Description

Nestled near the Hamptons, the fashionable summer playground of America's rich and famous, and in the shadow of New York City, lies an unimposing 840-acre island unidentified on most maps. On the few on which it can be found, Plum Island is marked red or yellow, and stamped U.S. government—restricted or dangerous animal diseases. Though many people live the good life within a scant mile or two from its shores, few know the name of this pork chop-shaped island. Even fewer can say whether it is inhabited, or why it doesn't exist on the map. That's all about to change.

Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government's Secret Plum Island Germ Laboratory blows the lid off the stunning true nature and checkered history of Plum Island. It shows that the seemingly bucolic island on the edge of the largest population center in the United States is a ticking biological time bomb that none of us can safely ignore.

Based on innumerable declassified government documents, scores of in-depth interviews, and access to Plum Island itself, this is an eye-opening, suspenseful account of a federal government germ laboratory gone terribly wrong. For the first time, Lab 257 takes you deep inside this secret world and presents startling revelations including virus outbreaks, biological meltdowns, infected workers who were denied assistance in diagnosis by Plum Island brass, the periodic flushing of contaminated raw sewage into area waters, and the insidious connections between Plum Island, Lyme disease, and the deadly 1999 West Nile virus outbreak.

An exploration of the complex world of microbiology, viruses, and bacteria, Lab 257 also shows how the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which ran Plum Island for the last half century, is far more than wholesome grade-A eggs and the food pyramid. The book probes what's in store for Plum Island's new owner, the Department of Homeland Security, in this age of bioterrorism. And for those interested in questions of national security and safety, it is a call to action for those concerned with protecting present and future generations from preventable biological catastrophes.

Lab 257 will change forever our current understanding of Plum Island -- a place that is, in the words of one insider, "a biological Three Mile Island."

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and frightening read.......2007-04-11

I picked up this book on a whim because I love the conspiracy theory-type books about all the shady government projects. As it turns out, this book really disturbed me.

Carroll, an attorney, wrote this book over the course of seven years, during which he requested government documents under the FOIA, conducted interviews with current and former employees of Plum Island, researched the connection to US-harbored Nazi scientists, and the inevitable decline of lab conditions under the new American trend of "privatization". Carroll visited the island himself before his access was pulled; he never states exactly why this happened. The book outlines the creation of the labs, how and why the island location was chosen (prevailing winds blow out to sea rather than inland, or so they said at the time), how it went from the US Army's jurisdiction to the USDA, and from there how the program went into a long, slow decline in standards, safety, and hazards. The chapter on the hurricane was terrifying in itself - you can feel the terror the maintenance workers must have felt knowing how helpless they were to prevent a potential "biological meltdown".

The book brings up some interesting potential connections between the labs on Pulm island and the relatively sudden appearance of Lyme disease and West Nile virus. Even if the research into animal diseases is the absolute truth, you still can't help but feel incredibly suspicious that the highest concentration of both Lyme and West Nile began in and around Connecticut and Long Island - the closest points of civilian population to Plum Island. Couple that with the discussion of bird migration and mosquito infestations, and you're inspired to do further reading on your own to uncover more of the truth - you can't take anything at face value, but any time the US government is involved on this large of a scale, healthy skepticism of government denials is required.

For those who wonder if we aren't already seeing "bioterror" attacks in the form of salmonella and e. coli attacks on our food manufacturing facilities and mad cow disease ravaging British livestock, this book is a must read on the programs that Richard Nixon supposedly ended in 1972.

                                5 out of 5 stars The U.S. Government exposed...again........2006-12-13

I don't know about most American's, but I for one am fed up with the insane amount of government corruption. Every day there is something new discovered, or admitted by the government that shows how the principle that one's government should benefit them and protect them before anything else is falling apart. Lab 257 exposes the truth about some of the nation's greatest mysteries, including the outbreak of both Lyme disease and the West Nile virus, both unseen in the United States until after Plum Island's research on the substances, both originating in the area immediately surrounding the island. Carroll ultimately allows the reader to draw their own conclusions about the nature of the Biological Time Bomb known as Plum Island, but as for me, it is quite obvious that the American government is not always working for its people. The sad truth, the harsh truth, must be known; reading this book is essentially to destroying the ignorance so prevalent in the mass society we live in, the ignorance towards politics and just what exactly is going on in terms of biological research. The greatest threat to America is not from Islamic terrorists, but from its own government's lack of care for the most dangerous of situations. Plum Island is one startling example of such blatant disregard, and Lab 257 ingeniously exposes the true nature of its past, present, and frightening future.

This one will have you scratching your head about the intelligence of our government. I only wonder if this would happen in a post 9-11 America.

This book presents a compelling circumstancial case that we must be ever mindful of the research being conducted around us. The photographs, government documents, news, and personal accounts of the operations of Plum Island reveal our hubris after WWII in believing we could control Mother Nature and the drastic consequences that hubris can cause. While I am not sure that one can prove the origin of Lyme disease, there are compelling arguments laid out for lab failures, poor maintenance, and potential contamination of the surrounding environment as a result. The disconcerting reality is that we must be ever mindful of the work our government is doing and ever watchful of how that work is conducted.
Moreover, it is disturbing that we welcomed Nazi scientists to a restricted government bioweapons facility to share the work they had started in Germany as the result of human experiments. We should never allow our government to sink to such levels in the name of discovery.
As a scientist and a citizen, I found this work dark and compelling. I think each person should read it with a questioning eye and determine for themselves whether they agree with the arguments laid out.

I was looking forward to reading this book, but within the first few pages it became apparent that the author has no experience in science or in journalism. The subject matter is fascinating, but I frankly don't think the book is worth reading because the author editorializes without providing any convincing grounds for his speculation, without even seeming to understand how weak his arguments are.

In more capable hands I think this would make a great book, because there is a lot of hidden history regarding germ warfare.

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse into a "biological Three Mile Island".......2006-07-16

Like THE RIVER, author Michael C. Carroll has a lot of evidence some of it circumstantial and some of it solid that suggests the spread of Lyme Disease and even West Nile Virus could be the work of the US Government's research on Plum Island. Nestled in Long Island Sound off the coast of Connecticut and not far from New York City this "biological Three Mile Island" was established to do research on bio warfare using techniques that were developed by the Nazi's and Japanese during World War II. Using Project Paperclip to offer refuge to German scientists (and Japense as well) after the war U.S. scientists benefited from the knowledge that was developed on POW's and concentration camp victims to develop new and better ways to kill and disable our enemies.

Lab 257 was the focal point of much of this research. The lab had consistent failures in isolating many of the viruses and bacteria that they studied. In fact the negative pressure environment where the animal bodies were to be destroyed was wired incorrectly blowing potential viruses and bacteria everywhere prior to their disposal. Using information from people who worked there (some anonymously), declassified files and other credible sources of information Carroll makes a compelling case for the carelessness of our government in research that may have helped spread Lyme disease infected ticks and other viruses into the environment.

While it certainly is important to understand how many of these viruses and bacteria work, it's even more important to protect the public from contamination. The sloppy methods used at the lab put many people that live in the surrounding area at risk. Since takne over by the Department of Homeland Security, Americans are in the dark as to the plans for this biological waste disposal site. Whatever is studied on the island is supposed to stay there (including trash) unfortunately many things that were supposed to stay there did not including workers who were inadvertantly infected with a virus that behaves quite similarly to AIDS but is found in swine.

With the turmoil in the world it is important to understand what terrorists might plan to damage the security and destroy lives in the U.S. but the question of what the cost to the public safety has never been adequately answered.

5 out of 5 stars Beware of the U.S. Government.......2006-07-09

This book gives solid circumstantial evidence that the U.S. Government is responsible for spreading Lyme Disease. Although it may seem like it was an accident, the negligence seems deliberate, especially being how rich our government is. It surely could have prevented this disaster from happening if it had cared enough.

4 out of 5 stars Important and Disturbing.......2006-06-14

Ever wonder about the origins of Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus? Lab 257 begins by presenting an interesting circumstantial case that the outbreak of these strange maladies in the U.S. may be traced to the secret government facility at Plum Island. The author then proceeds to explain how, thanks to inadequate funding, managerial complacency, and insufficient governmental oversight, this once state-of-the-art animal disease laboratory has degenerated into an environmental hazard of startling proportions, making future outbreaks of other frightening biological agents all too possible. The book concludes with some useful suggestions regarding alternatives to the current situation at Plum Island, acknowledging the heightened importance of its charter in the post-9/11 world. While some may find the details a bit dense in parts, it's a fine piece of investigative journalism that cries out for concerned citizens and politicians to take notice.

                                  Book Description

In this remarkably interdisciplinary examination of the discourse of environmentalism, the authors explore the linguistic, philosophical, psychological and cultural-historical aspects of environmental discourse; rather than environmental phenomena themselves. This volume is not advocacy on environmentalism, rather, it is an analysis of the means of persuasion and the techniques of advocacy used by both sides of the environmental debate between ôconservationistsö and ôconservatives.ö Based on studies conducted between 1992 and 1996, the book includes an analysis of the concepts of time and space in their linguistic manifestations. Another theme is the interdependencies of the natural world with political and economic institutions. Ultimately, it is a call to action, as the authors see in the increasing ôgreeningö of English and other Western languages, a kind of linguistic way of replacing or postponing action with talk alone. A groundbreaking volume, Greanspeak will promote dialogue among professionals and students in the fields of environmental issues, linguistics, discourse, psychology, and public policy.
