5 out of 5 stars The first half of the essential Hammer reference.......2007-08-17

Wayne Kinsey's books on Hammer Films (The Bray Studios Years and The Elstree Studios Years) together form the essential reference on the short-lived British studio that brought us the greatest horror films of the 60's and 70's. The books are well-researched and packed with behind-the-scenes stories and photos. If you love Hammer, you need to own these books.

I was under the impression that the first volume, Hammer Films: The Bray Studios Years, was out of print, because I had tried ordering it from several online dealers that were unable to obtain the title. However, Amazon's sellers just delivered a new copy to my doorstep recently. Snatch up these books while you can!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and essential.......2004-06-28

I haven't put this book down since I first picked it up six months ago. Kinsey's history of Hammer's Bray years (i.e. until 1967) is full of fascinating details I have not encountered elsewhere. He really manages to inspire an affection and enthusiasm for both the films and the Bray studios themselves.

By far the best section, and the reason I keep returning to the book, is the multi-page illustrated tour through the history of Bray's backlot, packed with rarely seen photos of Hammer's most memorable sets.

        Essential reading for Hammer fans.

4 out of 5 stars A good try but not enough new and interesting material.......2004-06-06

Who doesn't love Hammer Films? The author, Wayne Kinsey, a true fan, has devoted this book to the classic Hammer Years, at Bray Studio, a veritable Shangri-La, or mythical place, only this was real. On this lot Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and dozens more gave their finest performances in a variety of monster, slasher, terror, sci-fi and less easily classifiable films, for a parade of studio execs who sometimes resembled a kind of family--ever the more so in retrospect. Kinsey presents a film by film breakdown, in chronological order, with many lurid and comical photos. My, there were some beautiful starlets working for Hammer, and they seemed to take off their clothes at a moment's notice. As for the men, maybe not so intriguing outside of Cushing and Lee, but those two alone account for a huge variety of eccentric tics and tragedies.

What I didn't like was the repetitiveness of the formula. each film discussed in exactly the same way, and then the details of the film censors checking every script ahead of time and issuing stern warnings about "do not do this or that." OK, a bit of this is worthy of perusal, but too much and the reader deducts a star. And this was too much. All in all, this book merits a "4" on the KINSEY SCALE.

        Book Description

Michele Wallace burst into public consciousness with the 1979 publication of Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, a pioneering critique of the misogyny of the Black Power movement and the effects of racism and sexism on black women. Since then, Wallace has produced an extraordinary body of journalism and criticism engaging with popular culture and gender and racial politics. This collection brings together more than fifty of the articles she has written over the past fifteen years. Included alongside many of her best-known pieces are previously unpublished essays as well as interviews conducted with Wallace about her work. Dark Designs and Visual Culture charts the development of a singular, pathbreaking black feminist consciousness.

Beginning with a new introduction in which Wallace reflects on her life and career, this volume includes other autobiographical essays; articles focused on popular culture, the arts, and literary theory; and explorations of issues in black visual culture. Wallace discusses growing up in Harlem; how she dealt with the media attention and criticism she received for Black Macho and the Myth of the Superwoman, which was published when she was just twenty-seven years old; and her relationship with her family, especially her mother, the well-known artist Faith Ringgold. The many articles devoted to black visual culture range from the historical tragedy of the Hottentot Venus, an African woman displayed as a curiosity in nineteenth-century Europe, to films that sexualize the black body—such as Watermelon Woman, Gone with the Wind, and Paris Is Burning. Whether writing about the Anita Hill–Clarence Thomas hearings, rap music, the Million Man March, Toshi Reagon, multiculturalism, Marlon Riggs, or a nativity play in Bedford Stuyvesant, Wallace is a bold, incisive critic. Dark Designs and Visual Culture brings the scope of her career and thought into sharp focus.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing collection of essays..........2006-01-08

I read this collection of essays last summer, and I'm impressed with Wallace's balanced analyses of popular culture and cinema past and present. Wallace is an astute critic and scholar, but what astounded me were the early chapters that centered on her life. She should publish a memoir, as she has an acute ability to draw the reader into her personal life.
However, I do have one criticism. I do not like the way she handled bell hooks, and I'm not talking about Wallace's essays on the self-proclaimed diva of Black Feminism. In the early chapters, Wallace apologizes for writing the pieces on hooks, which undermines the excellent essays. The tone of Wallace's apology comes across as forced and insincere. bell hooks trashes everybody, and she has NEVER apologized or regretted a word she has put on paper. Just as Postcolonial critic Sara Suleri did a decade ago when she chastised hooks, Wallace should have stuck to her guns...Nonetheless, the essays on hooks are provocative, valid, and downright juicy.

For the third volume of this unique series, veteran puzzle editor Mel Rosen again began by commissioning 50 crosswords that are solvable with just a pencil—no chunky erasers, heavy reference books or prescription tranquilizers needed here. Next, Mel carefully edited the puzzles to make sure they'd be free of the tricks, gimmicks and "crosswordese" that often turn off beginning and occasional solvers—while at the same time insuring that the themes and clues would be fresh and lively. Last of all, he added plenty of special hints and tips—both general and specific—to make the puzzles truly solver-friendly. The result is a book of 50 fun-to-solve crosswords guaranteed to turn many a tentative puzzler into a lifelong fan.

          Book Description

THE BRAND GAP is the first book to present a unified theory of brand. Whereas most books on branding are weighted toward either a strategic or creative approach, this book shows how both ways of thinking can unite to produce a “charismatic brand”—a brand that customers feel is essential to their lives. In an entertaining two-hour read you’ll learn:
          • a new definition of brand

          • the five essential disciplines of brand-building
          • how branding is changing the dynamics of competition
          • the three most powerful questions to ask about any brand
          • why collaboration is the key to brand-building
          • how design determines a customer’s experience
          • how to test brand concepts quickly and cheaply
          • the importance of managing brands from the inside

Also see: THE BRAND GAP second edition, which includes a 220-term brand glossary and premium softcover binding.

          FROM THE BACK COVER

Not since McLuhan's THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE has a book compressed so many ideas into so few pages. Using the visual language of the boardroom, Neumeier presents the first unified theory of branding -- a set of five disciplines to help companies bridge the gap between brand strategy and brand execution. Those with a grasp of branding will be inspired by what they find here, and those who would like to understand it better will suddenly "get it." This deceptively simple book offers everyone in the company access to "the most powerful business tool since the spreadsheet."

"Finally, a book that cuts to the heart of what brand is all about -- connecting the rational and the emotional, the theoretical and the practical, the logical and the magical to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Everyone in the company should read this book, not just the three people with 'brand' in their titles." --Susan Rockrise, Worldwide Creative Director, Intel

"A pleasure to read. THE BRAND GAP consistently provides deep, practical insights in a light, visual way. Discover the power of imagery and the role of research in building a heavy-duty brand -- without the heavy-duty reading." --David Aaker, Author of "Brand Leadership" and "Building Strong Brands"

"Neumeier stands out among brand-savvy professionals. His experience as a designer, writer, and strategist lends realism to his five disciplines of brand-building. Anyone who needs a deeper understanding of the creation, management, and evolution of brands should grab this book with both hands and start reading." --Patrick Fricke, Manager of Print and New Media Design, Kodak

"This is not just another book on brand. This is the only book you'll need to read in business, engineering, and design school." --Clement Mok, Design enterprenuer/President of AIGA

"THE BRAND GAP is an original. It describes the full range of creative interdependencies that need to be managed in concert, but in a language so plain, crisp, and simple that you suddenly 'see' the concept of brand--and can act boldly on it." --Peter Van Naarden, Director of Global Brand for Hewlett-Packard Co.

"THE BRAND GAP couldn't be more timely. Just when we're at our most skeptical about corporate motives, along comes a book that shows how to evaluate and develop a brand in a straightforward and honest manner." --David Stuart, Brand Designer and Co-Founder of The Partners, London

"This is an important work, with just the right level of accessibility. Despite our overexposure to brand theory these days, THE BRAND GAP is the first book that seems fresh and relevant." --Richard Grefe, Executive Director, The American Institute of Graphic Arts

"A well-managed brand is the lifeblood of any successful company--and Neumeier shows us exactly how to do it. Read this book before your competitors do!" --Tom Kelley, General Manager of Ideo/Author of "The Art of Innovation"

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for ANYONE with a job... SERIOUSLY!.......2006-11-06

This is one of the best books ever written. It is insightful for consumers, for businesses, for marketing professionals and... well, anyone! It makes you think, it makes you see marketing and advertising in a whole new way, and it will make you smarter - period. I think this should be mandatory reading in high schools across the world.

Do not attempt to be a web designer, an advertising professional, or an enterpreneur until you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars shortest treatise on branding .......2006-09-01

in existence, that still tells most important things about branding you need to know.
It said nothing new to me, but then again I have read the authors and branding / positioning gurus Marty Neumeier mentions and quotes plus two dozen other books on branding and strategy.
So instead of doing it the hard way, like I did, you CAN actually find out most you need to know about branding from this rather small book during a three hour flight.
One thing I don't like about this book is its "look and feel", layout and fonts.
Its like the author wanted to be SO COOL and innovative SO BAD that he took it overboard. I found it annoying, not cool at all.

4 out of 5 stars Good read, makes you think.......2006-08-18

Brand Gap was a quick airplane read. It's layout and common sense language made it an easy read. The book had very good points about brands versus logos and some real world mistakes that companies make. I read the book four weeks ago and I'm still thinking about it! Somewhat shotty construction, though - my book binding fell apart.

5 out of 5 stars Full of information, very insightful.......2006-08-13

This is a delightful little book, easy to read, in easy to understand langauage.

More importantly, it is very insightful. One of the biggest problems in marketing is the concept that buying is a rational decision. Neumeier makes it easy to understand that the first step in the buying process is emotional connection. This concept is not new. As Neumeier quotes Ben Franklin, "Would you persuade, speak of interest, not reason."

The author makes a good case for importance of marketing (rational) and advertising (creative) working together to make 1 + 1 = 11. He also show the way of the future for busniess with bringing together teams of the best in field rather than trying to employ all under on roof. He takes a lesson from Hollywood to demonstrate this concept.

His insight into the misuse of focus groups is worth the price of the book times ten.

All in all you will find this book delightful to read and very insightful in many different facets of busiess. He does not bore you with the details and therein lies a bit of danger - that many people will miss some valuable concepts. It should be read often to keep the ideas and concepts fresh in mind.

5 out of 5 stars A pill that will get your feet soaked with brand wisdom.......2006-06-13

You may be the busy executive type who is all numbers and no magic. Or the creative type that is in need to connect with the business side of the brand. Or quite simply, you may just want to learn more about this fascinating world of branding. This book may be the answer to the three of you.

In less than 200 pages, which actually read more like 100, author Marty Neumeier is able to paint a very clear (and graphical) picture of what brand is and is not. With pills of wisdom such as "a brand is not what you say it is. It's what THEY say it is" sprinkled throughout the book, he is able to capture your imagination and bridge the two typically-divorced sides of branding in a marriage that promises to last, getting strategy and creativity to talk to each other in ways that they never knew possible before.

He then moves to provide a cycle that reminded me at times of the classic Deming Cycle (Plan, Do, Check, Act). He proposes the following steps: 1) Differentiate; 2) Collaborate; 3) Innovate; 4) Validate; and 5) Cultivate; as the five disciplines of branding. Each of them comes loaded with examples, do's and don'ts to help the creative and the rational types relate easily with the concept at hand.

The end result is a book that you wish had come out before the dawn of time... one that you'd want every person involved in brands to read, so that we can all live in a happy brand world!

Stuart first met Lee as a cadet at West Point, when Lee was Superintendent, in the early 50's, not at Harpers Ferry.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography of a Major Civil War Figure.......2006-03-07

In my humble opinion, Emory Thomas has written what I believe to be the definitive account of one of the 3 most effective calvary generals (Sheridan and Forrest being the other 2) during the Civil War. The writing style flows smoothly throughout the text as the writer goes from one subject to another in JEB Stuart's life.

          Among the areas covered include:

          1. Stuart's early life and West Point days.
          2. His early US Army service before the Civil War.
          3. His family life.
          4. His Civil War relationships with various generals (Lee, Longstreet, Jackson, etc.) and subordinates (Jones, Rosser, Munford, etc.).
          5. Civil War campaigns and ultimate death from a wound suffered at Yellow Tavern, VA in May 1864.
          6. His evangelical faith.
          7. Stuart's personal strengths and weaknesses.

I appreciated Thomas' ability to respect his subject while also describing his personal weaknesses (extreme vanity and concern with what others thought of him, excessive self-promotion, too much of a flirt with the ladies.). Doing so helped to show Stuart as a mere human being instead of the facade he attempted to portray.

The only complaint I had was not having enough maps showing Stuart's involvement in the many campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia. The maps in the book were of good quality but there could have been a few more.

All in all, I recommend the book as the best account of JEB Stuart. Read and enjoy!

I had forgotten I still had this book on my shelf! I used it early in my college years (1991)to write a Cival War Cavalry paper for an English class. I got a B on the paper, but I had so much fun writing it. This book and others were a big help. Thomas uses actual letters, diaries and news stories to tell the story of J.E.B. Stuart. Terrific book and I highly recomend it to anyone who is into Civil War or general American history!

4 out of 5 stars Beauty and the Civil War.......2003-09-06

Bold Dragoon is the story of the life of J.E.B. Stuart, a cavalryman and a cavalier of the old order. From his youth in southwest Virginia to his wounding at Yellow Tavern, his was a life of adventure and a search for recognition.

Called Beauty at West Point, Stuart wore a great beard during the war to cover up what he thought of as a weak chin. However, there was nothing weak about his military exploits. General Lee relied on him and his intelligence throughout the war. So much so, that when he was missing at the beginning of the battle at Gettysburg, blame fell on him and his absence as part of the reason for the battle's beginning before the Army of Virginia could choose the ground. He never again disappointed Lee, whom he first met at the time of John Brown's escapade in Harper's Ferry.

Proud and ostentatious, he revelled in the attentions of women and chastised his wife when she showed jealousy. He loved to dance. Could be refreshed by short naps and wake immediately -- which he was required to do on more than one occasion when caught unawares. And his death in Richmond in 1864 brought a chill to the Confederacy. General Lee said of him: "He never brought me a false piece of information."

Emory Thomas brings this man to life. His research included many primary sources, the writing style is easy, and the story is broad and bold. This is a must for students of the War Between the States and U.S. military history.

5 out of 5 stars Well Wtitten Bio of Beauty who was Beat by the Modern Era.......2002-11-01

A delightful bio of Stuart dealing with his early years, West Point, John Brown's rebellion, his relationship with women and of course the Civil War. Stuart the virtual romantic knight who enjoyed the role and traveled like a characer from Robin Hood with a banjo playing musician and a sect of followers that almost mirrors Custer's post Civil War band and family of followers. Besides Stuart himself, he has a fascinating collection of subordinate such as the Prussian Heroes Von Brocke, Fitz Lee, Rooney Lee, Wade Hampton, Grumble Jones (not his favorite) and Thomas Rosser who was a great friend of Custer's who never got the star he sought. As his legend develops it seems that Stuart became caught up with it particularly by the time of Brandy Station where the day after an elaborate parade showing of his calavry units for Lee he is shocked by aggressive and highly succesful attacks by the transformed union calvary. This may have led to Stuart's desire for a sensational trip around he Union army talking himself out of the picture at the battle of Gettysburg. At the end, Sheridan's forces seem to exhaust Stuart's calvary due to shortages of horses and the addition of repeaters.

Fascinating description of the seeming vain yet outging Stuart sparking a unique friendship with the religious and stern Jackson.

In the end, it seems that Stuart, the seemingly last cavalier, is undone by the modern use of calvary signifying the change in warfare and the abrupt decline of the confederacy.

                            Book Description

More than a decade after the publication of his dazzling book on the cultural, technological, and manufacturing aspects of measuring time and making clocks, David Landes has significantly expanded Revolution in Time. In a new preface and scores of updated passages, he explores new findings about medieval and early-modern time keeping, as well as contemporary hi-tech uses of the watch as mini-computer, cellular phone, and even radio receiver or television screen. While commenting on the latest research, Landes never loses his focus on the historical meaning of time and its many perceptions and uses, questions that go beyond history, that involve philosophers and possibly, theologians and literary folk as well.

                            4 out of 5 stars pretty excellent.......2007-10-01

I'm a lawyer- my time is billable in increments of one tenth of an hour. At larger law firms (I don't work for a firm) lawyers are expected to BILL- BILL- in excess of 2100 hundred hours a year. To "bill" an hour basically means that you not only work the hour, but record the manner in which you spent it. Nowadays, we have computer programs to facilitate this task- but the act of keeping records of how you spend your time- it is deeply unatural, and my expereience as a lawyer has caused me to have a minor interest in the relationship between time and the development of modernity.

How important was the invention of the mechanical clock in the middle ages? Very, for you see... it was the first mechanical clock that gave us... the beat.

"The achievment of the genius who built the first mechanical clock was not that he used an escapment as that he had made use oscillatory motion to divide time into countable beats."

Do you get it? IT'S THE BEAT.

Anyway, I found the actual organization to be overly schematic. In Landes' words, "It is a triptych: a study in cultural history; in the history of science and technology, and in social and economic history. I now offer you one sentence summaries of this book and those subjects, so that you will not have to read a 360 page book.

The first segment of the book answers the question "Why did Europe invent the mechanical clock, as supposed to the Chinese." The Chinese (and the Islamic) world were using sophisticated water driven clocks while Europe was being sacked by the Vikings. However, they never moved on to the mechanical clock- which is superior in design- mostly because um... water clocks are big and immovable.

The second segement of the book looks at the technological/scientific improvements that brough the clock into the shape we know and love today. So we're talking fifty pages on the builiding of tower clocks in the early middle ages, the development of portable clocks in the later middle ages, the development of the marine chronograph- a device that allowed sailors to navigate longitutde accurately without reference to the night sky. The chapters on the marine chronograph was as boring a text as I've read all year.

The final segment briefs the development of the watch industry- as in- the post industrial revolution watch industry. Clockmakers are interesting in that they were making technologically sophisticated devices long before most Europeans ever used a machine, but their industry- because of its early development- retained many of the hallmarks of pre-industrial commerce long after "the handwriting" was on the wall. Thus, the English were supplanted by the Swiss in the 18th and 19th century, the Swiss were challenged by the Americans, both were surpassed by the Japanese. I actually found the information about the Swiss watch making industry to be interesting- a bunch of poor mountain folk taught themselves how to be the best watch makers in the world AND how to sell those watches "world" wide in the course of a generation.

The chapters on the Swiss watchmakers almost makes me want to go to Geneva and the Jura region- but not quite.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and a joy to read.......2007-08-30

Everything you ever wanted to know about time and especially the devices created by man to measure it. David S. Landes lovingly traces the history of timepieces, from the earliest Chinese clepsydra (water clocks) to the first spring operated clocks to the most recent quartz watches, in great detail and penache: he obviously is fascinated with his subject and easily conveys that enthusiasm to the reader. He writes with ease and style, and even when the topics become somewhat technical he is able to bring the reader through the rough waters with grace and authority. Landes has the rare but always admirable ability to be both fully knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time. It's a fascinating book from first page to last, a most laudable accomplishment in that it is not just the definitive account of the subject of clocks and timepieces, but also one of the most stylish and entertaining techno/history books ever written.

4 out of 5 stars If you love clocks, you will love this book .......2007-01-22

If you love clocks you will love this book, but if you are merely just interested in them, you may find this book a hard slog. David Landes loves clocks - a fact that comes through loud and clear, but to some degree, I felt that this love actually was detrimental to the book because it caused him to dwell too much on minutia at the expense of a more coherent discussion of the subject. There are numerous drawings of the workings of clocks, but they were not clear enough for me. (I am not that interested in clocks, but if I were and had more background in horology, I would have probably been able to decipher the drawings more readily.)

This book covers all aspects of clocks, from the need for them, to their manufacture and the economics of producing them, to the development of electronic clocks. As such, it was quite interesting. I especially liked the early sections, which discussed the historical need for clocks and those sections that dealt with the impact of external historical events, such as the persecution of French Huguenots. Unfortunately, I did not find some of the middle sections, which dealt with the question of the evolutions of the internal workings of mechanical clocks, to be sufficiently clear for me. This is an area where those who are more familiar with the details of escapement mechanisms will find the book easier to follow than I did. I also found that the details of who made what change in the escapement mechanism to be a bit more information than I needed. All in all, this is a very good book for those who love clocks and know a bit about their workings, but others who are more historically minded, without a particular love of clocks, may find themselves looking to see how much more they had to go. If I could, I would have given this book five stars for those who love clocks, but only three stars for those, like myself, who are more interested in the historical aspects of the subject.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding information, sometimes a tough read.......2003-02-02

The guy who wrote this seems to like using big words just for the sake of using them. I have never seen the information in this book anywhere else. It is a great history of timekeeping. If you're fascinated with clocks or watches and would like to get some true education, pick up a copy of this book. Just be warned that it is not a book that most people can just breeze through.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful history of technology and competitive change.......1998-12-19

I read this book in it's first incarnation, when I first became interested in horological collecting. Mr. Landes writes an informative and educational treatise on horological development and history, and in the process creates an illuminating case study of the impact of competitive pressures on established industry. It is fascinating to take one of original "high tech" industries and see how technological change and marketplace behavior affect entire companies and national industries. The long-term history described in this book perfectly illustrates Santayana's "remember the past" concept. There are amazing parallels to technological and marketing revolutions we still see developing today. A good read, which I would recomend heartily for horological afficianados and students of business and technology.

From playground equipment to skyscrapers, structures are everywhere. The second unit in the Young Scientist series, Building Structures with Young Children guides children's explorations to help deepen their understanding of the physical science present in building block structures-including concepts such as gravity, stability, and balance. Looking at science in a new way, this nationally field-tested curriculum supports the early development of important science inquiry skills such as questioning, investigating, discussing, and formulating ideas and theories.

                                  Book Description

This book is designed to acquaint the reader with current regulations and with the necessary information to size air pollution control systems. The material presented should also help enable one to select the appropriate equipment for retrofit or new process control, to prepare specifications to purchase equipment, and to prepare permits for air pollution control systems. Sizing and Selecting Air Pollution Control Systems provides guidance to help those responsible for air pollution control to specify systems which are cost-effective and energy-efficient to meet the needs of their employers and the government. When equipment specifications are properly prepared, they provide for an easier comparison of competitive bids of those devices capable of meeting standards reliably and economically.
