Book Description
If you thought Enron was bad, you haven't read anything yet! What began as a simple business investment became an international scandal when the combined forces of the Ministry of Finance, Stock Exchange, securities companies, bureaucrats, and judicial system (Japan, Inc.) attacked an investor. Accused of "greenmail" and much worse, T.H. Wang fought back against the injustices of the Japanese system. This unprecedented assault on an ordinary investor led to a two-decades long struggle against the injustices of Japan's financial system. Presented in narrative form, "The Economic Gang" exposes the dirty secrets that the Japanese don't want you to know about the inner, hidden workings of Japan's financial market; its corporate structure, political and legal systems, and its unfair business practices. After more than a decade of stagnation, Moody's has downgraded Japan's credit rating three times in the last year putting Japan on the same footing as Latvia, Cyprus, and Botswana. Japan currently holds billions of dollars of American investments and U.S. federal loans. The collapse of Enron caused devastation in U.S. retirement plans. Enron was but a single company; Japan, however, is the world's second-largest economy. Imagine the devastation if Japan was to collapse. * A firsthand view of how Japan, Inc., uses its unparalleled power to rob its own people and the investment world * Find out how Japanese corporations hide losses, support politicians with insider trading, and much, much more * How the true wrongdoers go unpunished while those beneath them take the blame * What every American should know about Japan's system and what no one else is telling you * Find out why former Secretary of State James Baker, Senators Christopher Bond and Tom Daschle, Dr. Li Ka-Shing, Dr. Lee Shau Kee, Dr. Cheng Yu-tung, Dr. Robin Y.H. Chan, and other influential people in government and financial circles fully support Mr. Wang's reform efforts
Book Description
Even today, 29 years after retiring from coaching basketball at UCLA, John Wooden remains America's Coach. John Wooden: An American Treasure is the definitive book on his extraordinary life, from his early years as a small-town legend from Martinsville, Indiana, and an All-American guard at Purdue to his legendary years at UCLA and the fruitful years following his retirement.
Here is the story of his relationship with his late wife, Nell: their love affair for the ages, his deep depression after her death in 1985, and how his faith and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren provided him with the reason to embrace life again.
The events that led to his decision to walk away from coaching at the pinnacle of success in 1975 are explained in detail, as well as the carefully planned words he used to tell his shocked players in the locker room that he would be retiring after the NCAA Finals game in San Diego. His relationships with J. D. Morgan, his controlling and demanding athletic director, and Jerry Norman, the fiery assistant who helped him ignite the sparks that led to the national championship runs, are recounted. The thoughts of his most heated coaching rivals and his most dedicated assistant are included, as well as those of the broadcaster who gained fame with him and of his longtime pastor, who admits that sometimes he was intimidated to have this celebrated man listening from his pew. Here are the behind-the-scenes stories of how Wooden was offered the chance to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates, how he developed his famous Pyramid of Success, and the real secret behind why his UCLA teams were able to win more consistently than any other collegiate team ever. Here are up-close, personal moments that reveal what his life is now.
On the year of the 40th anniversary of his first national championship at UCLA, and more than 30 years after his autobiography, John Wooden: An American Treasure reveals why this kind, endearing, unbelievably intelligent coaching legend, even at age 94, remains one of the more fascinating, extraordinary, yet humble men of this, or any, generation. Ultimately he has become America's Teacher as much as its most celebrated coach.

not good.......2005-05-11
The Book totally skips from 1948-1962. As successful as Wooden was, he did have some failures. The book failed to mention them. I am a huge UCLA and WOoden fan, but the book needs to shed some light also on his failures as coaching. He was not a perfect coach. Bisheff is writing pretty much a biased book. I think he did cover Wooden very well, but left out over 20 years.
Finest John Wooden Biography.......2005-05-07
This splendid biographical study details many obscurely known facets of John Wooden's public and private life such as that he was a schoolteacher at one time. It especially excels on describing Wooden's family life and his continuing friendship with his former players after he retired from coaching at U.C.L.A. in 1975. It also updates the reader on what activities have transpired in the lives of Coach Wooden's former players after their collegiate basketball playing days.
This definitive biography would be more complete if the author had included a bibliography but for some mysterious reason this was omitted. John Wooden was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts as a player and a coach. He is generally considered to have been the greatest college basketball coach of all time. This book is also remiss in that it doesn't include numerous details of John's professional playing career for the Indianapolis Kautskys in the 1930's after John graduated from Purdue University having been an All-American for three years. The author mentions that John Wooden once sank at least one hundred consecutive free throws while playing for the Indianapolis Kautskys. However the author's citation of this incident is vaguely imprecise. In a personal communication with me John Wooden confided that he sank 134 consecutive free throws for the Indianapolis Kautskys. John stated to me that Frank Kautsky personally gave him a one hundred dollar bill after John had sunk his one hundredth free throw in a row. John's 134 consecutive free throws sunk in competitive league play is the all-time record on the professional, collegiate or high school level.
I have always admired John Wooden's life-style values and coaching philosophy. He had to have been one of the most underpaid talents of all time since the highest salary he ever received in his lifetime at U.C.L.A. was in his retirement year in 1975 when he received an unbelievably low income of $32,500!
It is a shame that a painting doesn't exist of John Wooden by the famed artist Norman Rockwell. John truly is a Rockwell "Americana" treasure. It has been my pleasure to have known this treasure.
Best on Wooden.......2004-12-25
This bio by Steve Bisheff of the OC Register is the best on Coach that I've read. I've read everything on Coach Wooden and couldn't put this one down. It took me back 40+ years when I first began to take notice of the Coach and his Bruins. What a great celebration of the career and life of the greatest coach and teacher there's ever been. Without painting him as perfect this bio highlights the character of a man who didn't just coach basketball players, but taught youing men about life. What's amazing is that 40-50 years later his boys are successful in life because of his influence and not afraid to proclaim their love for their Coach. This is a must read especially for Wooden/UCLA fans

KEEPING THE BRITISH MOVIE INDUSTRY -"UP"..........2007-01-06
Simon Sheridan has if you can pardon this and other puns in this piece, done a "bang-up" job of documenting the history of sex movies in British cinema. From the nudist films of the 1950's to the titilating "sex-coms" of the 1960's and 70's, it's all here in chronological detail complete with movie stills, posters and "behind the scenes" stories. Now if you're already thinking that this subject is something you'll find unintersting or offensive, well let me just say that it's really the same as watching Benny Hill on TV or a "Carry On" movie that basically pioneered the whole genre in the first place. Only it's taken to the next step or mis-step depending on your tolerance for such things. With titles like "Confession's Of A Window Cleaner", "Can You Keep It Up For A Week", "I'm Not Feeling Myself Tonight" and alike, this was the state of the British movie industry in the 70's and was all that was keeping it alive. A far cry from the day's of the great Ealing comedies and epics like "Lawrence Of Arabia", it was a sign of the times. Whereas in America "hard core" films like "Deep Throat" were becoming the "in-thing", that kind of pornography was still very much illegal in Britain. So to enhance the "soft core" simulated sex, the comedic element was added in typical naughty British "seaside humour" style. Indeed, many of the same big name comedic actors who were on TV, found their way into doing cameos in these pictures. You even had such stars as Joan Collins stripping off in "The Bitch" and "The Stud", thats right the same star of TV's "Dynasty". You had veteran directors like Val Guest and American Jack Arnold, trying their hand at it. As well as newcomers like Martin Campbell, who later went on to direct a few James Bond movies. Big name studios like EMI and Columbia Pictures, certainly didn't mind getting in on the act either.
As the author saids "these were movies that put boobs on screens and bums on seats". What with most of Britain's cinema's already converted to bingo halls and supermarkets, exhibitor's were desperate to get the public or as they like to say over here "punters", to fill up those seats. As you might expect -they did and it prooved very profitable specially when they were produced so cheaply and so fast. I can even remember going to my local ABC theatre in London and getting amused and somewhat modestly aroused by them. Looking back, it's all very dated and tame by today's "in your face" digital standards. A good supplement to this book, is Sheridan's other book on Amazon, a look at British sex star Mary Millington in "Come Play With Me". Taken from the title of Mary's biggest hit sexcom, which also incidently holds the record for being the longest-ever theatrical booking in British cinema history!
forgotten humour.......2004-05-31
I have had this book for ages now. It was bought for me as I am a fan of the Carry On films.
I read about all of the films and saw the Confessions films on television, I thought that they were fun. To me these films are only one step up from the Carry On's, in there sex content.
I found them so good I made it my mission in life to find these movies and watch as many as I could. This book has become invaluable to me as a reference book.
People are so busy trying to be politically correct that they have forgotten how to laugh, at the women and the men! Do we have to analyse everything? can't we just enjoy it?

Customer Reviews:
Poor binding mars otherwise terrific book........2006-09-24
A beautiful book filled with beautiful pictures of beautiful (and bizzare) Japanese toys. What more could one ask for? Well, how about a book that stays in one piece for more than 30 minutes. After less than half an hour of gentle reading the wraparound cover became unglued from the rest of the book. I'll glue the cover back on and cross my fingers nothing more comes loose, but this is a hassle, and not the first time such a thing has happened with a Chronicle Book: my copy of Eric Kohler's "In the Groove" found itself In the Trash soon after both cover and pages came loose from the el-cheapo glue binding. Message to Chronicle Books: it's the 21st Century, and high time books be bound to last more than a day. Either have your current printer improve his binding, or get a new printer. And yes, I'd be willing to pay a little more for better binding. My rating: content = 5 stars, presentation = 1 star.
I can't believe it . . ........2005-12-13
I, too, am disappointed by the negative reviews of this book. Collectors (which, sadly, I am not) will recognize that this book is not intended to be a catalog, but a showcase of some of the strange and beautiful Japanese toys.
I loved the photography, and the serious time and effort that must have went into each shot. There is at least one (and probably more) fanatic behind this book, that's for sure.
I found this book in a thrift store (who would give such a treasure away?), and knew that I must own it. The characters are so bizarre, yet sometimes, strangely, familiar. Only later did I discover that this is the work of Jimbo Matison, whose "Space Is Dum" webtoon was already deeply imbedded in my psyche (check it out, if you can find it).
This book also spawned a great game in my house. My wife opens the book to a random page, and we both make up a name for the character depicted (as I said, I am not a collector, and know few of their names). We are, sadly, never close, but we try.
I look forward to more twisted stuff from Jimbo in the future.
Nice book very comical!.......2005-10-08
Beautiful photos and nice book on vinyl japanese toys.

WONDERFUL PRESENTATION OF A MARVELOUS COLLECTION!.......2003-06-25
I can't believe the 2 kill-joys on this page. These are the guys I try to block from my ebay auctions when I can : picky, shrill & NO HUMOR (or soul for that matter).
I've bought sold & collected tons of robots & space toys over the past 20 years or so, yet many of these characters I haven't seen at all except in the tiny little fliers accompanying some of the boxes. This is a MAGNIFICENT SELECTION! Posed, composed & shot with loving perfection! Every turn of the page is a delightful surprise.
The only drawback is that it makes me want to start all over & fill my shelves with these guys. Argggh...oh no, not again. Gasp - all that dusting....
[...]Free shipping is a steal for this book!.......2003-06-24
This book is a must have for Japanese vinyl doll collectors or for those who appreciate awesome pictures. The book could have featured more vinyls, but I'm not complaining.

Up to date the greatest Sovereign Stone source book..........2005-11-15
Come to think of it this might very well be one of the greatest D&D source books as well. I'm absolutely in love with the system of magic (I was quite enthralled with it when I saw it in the new revised edition of the Sovereign Stone campaign setting). Does the magic do the novels justice?
Yes, and then some!!!
Mageware shops, spell books, all those wonderful things are covered in this book and then some! Quite a resourceful book even if you do plan on "free playing" the campaign without the official campaign book.
Unfortunately in D&D we so often see poorly released source material that barely demands the high prices charged for them: this book is different, truly good stuff.
A D20 system that has balance and makes a good story.......2003-03-14
The Codex Mysterium provides a good system for replacing the basic D20 system. I've never liked AD&D's memorizing spells, and have often come up with home-grown systems or use other third party systems. The problem is, memorized spells just don't match the way most fiction portrays magic. You never get to the point where you can just do simple spells with a thought, like you can with the GURPS system.
The Codex's system provides the ability to get to that point, and does it without sacrificing game balance. It balances the ability to cast unlimited spells per day with the chance of failure and a potential cost in hit points for overdoing it.
An alternative magic system to drop into any campaign........2002-04-21
The Codex Mysterium gives you an alternative magic system to drop into any D20 or D&D campaign. If you don't like the standard D&D magic system, take a look. It also includes rules for creating your own spells. (NB: Actual RULES for creating spells, not just guidelines and suggestions.)
One complaint: They duplicated almost everything from the base Sovereign Stone book that you need to use this magic system in your own campaign except for one thing: The basic spells that are in the base book. There's plenty of new spells in the Codex, but you'll probably want the one's from the base book too.
Customer Reviews:
It's a good book; not a great book........2007-09-24
I read the earlier version of this book, "Katie.com." The book starts off slowly and I was getting bored with it for a while. I just couldn't relate to this teenage girl from an upper middle class family. In my opinion, she was too obsessed with designer clothes and with her swimming team. The book eventually gained my interest when she started talking to a guy that she met online who was going by the name of Mark. Their relationship and the legal case that followed are the only things that piqued my interest. I'm glad that I read the entire story, but I'm very glad that I spent so little to buy it. This book is well worth the few bucks that I payed for it. I found it to be very mild. I do recommend it--even for other teens.
some of the reading can be offensive .......2007-01-27
I do not recomend this book to a preteen. There are parts in this book that are explicit ie: talking about oral sex (but not using the term oral sex!) along with other things that a preteen doesn't need to be subjected too at such a young age. The less prude person may say parts of this book boarder on soft porn. If you want to read about a girl getting mixed up with a 41 year old man, than read this book. I hope that this book does not end up in libraries at our schools.
Very insightful.......2006-04-17
I loved this book and think that every parent, preteen and teenage person online should read it. It was well written and gives you insight into what she was thinking and feeling in her world around her. Highly recommended and well written.
Not to bad.......2006-02-03
The story, at times, drags on but you want to keep reading it just incase something happens. Its a book yous should read if you have alot of time on your hands.

Great book!.......2002-02-20
This book is definitly one of my fav's!!!! Okay It's about Morgan Cross and how she is obsessed with the internet, just when she thinks everything is good with two friends she met on the internet she realizes that she has put one of them in life threating danger. The other one is more than she appears.
This is a really great book and it reminds all of us that we all must not always realie on our selves for everything but on God and never to underestimate how much damage you can do to someone with one chat on the web.
Hope u read the book!
Christian_Brat101
I'm Another Chat Freak!.......2001-11-17
I liked this book because I can really relate to Morgan. In this book, Morgan, a freshman (like me) is really obsessed with the internet. She's always on, and so am I. That is how we are a lot alike. If you liked the other Todaysgirls.com books just as much as I did, then you'll like this book too. I only gave it 4 stars because it isn't my favorite in the series.

Book Description
John Hyde's prayer life ranks in a league with the prayer lives of Andrew Murray, George Mueller, Charles Finney, Frank Bartleman, Reese Howells, Evan Roberts and other prayer warriors of church history. In learning to learn to pray effectively you can have no better example than the life of John Hyde.
Customer Reviews:
A must read if you pray.......2007-08-01
This is an excellent book both to help with prayer and to motivate to pray.
Great Book.......2007-05-28
This is one of the greatest books I have ever read, it is very inspiring. The man was a tremendous prayer warrior.
Soul Stirring.......2007-05-12
This is a wonderful synopsis hitting some of the peaks of John Hyde's life. A modest ammount of personal application make this a wonderful devotional tool for individual or group edification.
Worth the read!.......2006-08-06
This is written by 3 different writers (compiled by one person). The second and third recorded stories that changed my view on prayer. Very powerful. Hyde's passion for God in prayer far exceeds anything that I've ever experienced before. This helps paint a better vision for our prayer lives.
Life Chaging Book!.......2000-04-06
I had the opportunity to read this book while doing an internship at my Church. We had to read a book every three months and then write a brief paper on how the book inspired us personally. The book started off a little slow but once you got into the book you could not help but to feel for John Hyde. He was such a man of prayer, and you could actually feel his passion and love for prayer and intercession. The book goes over his life and shows different aspects of his life in prayer. The book truly challenged me in my own individual prayer life! I couldn't help but grow by reading this book. I recommend it to anyone who truly has a heart to pray or anyone going into ministry. It changed my life, it can change yours!
Book Description
Martin Gilbert, author of the multivolume biography of Winston Churchill and other brilliant works of history, chronicles world events year by year, from the dawn of aviation to the flourishing technology age, taking us through World War I to the inauguration of Franklin Roosevelt as president of the United States and Hider as chancellor of Germany. He continues on to document wars in South Africa, China, Ethiopia, Spain, Korea, Vietnam, and Bosnia, as well as apartheid, the arms race, the moon landing, and the beginnings of the computer age, while interspersing the influence of art, literature, music, and religion throughout this vivid work.
A rich, textured look at war, celebration, suffering, life, death, and renewal in the century gone by, this volume is nothing less than extraordinary.

POSSIBLY ONE OF THE BEST SINGLE-VOLUME HISTORIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY.......2007-10-05
I believe that this book is one of my best, well worth reading, and then re-reading. I should value any feedback, thoughts and suggestions.
very handy quick reference.......2007-01-12
The book was used in a short semester study by adults over 60. It was perfect for the course because I could do further research on any subject covered, after getting the basics from the book and further details from the professor - a great book to have around for the grandchildren!
Biased information.......2006-12-07
The information in the book is mostly snippets of wars leaving aside a vast amount of technical, development and famine etc related information.
The whole section about second world war leaves the atrocities committed on the gypsy's and other people. Colonial powers point of view is dominant. The Would not recommend for reading
Book Description
Helping coaches and players streamline their learning systems, improve their performance, and further their understanding and enjoyment of the game, this book provides an entertaining and enlightening look at the physics behind how to use a racquet to change the speed and direction of a tennis ball. Distinguishing the science from the folklore and myth, it makes the physics of tennis understandable to players of all skill levels. Important issues such as the role of string tension, the meaning of power, the importance of swing weight, and the relevance of the various sweet spots are addressed. Athletes are shown how to play better tennis by obeying the laws of the universe, optimizing equipment for ultimate performance, and understanding the dynamics of tennis events. From speed-to-spin ratios and shock vibration scales to choosing string on a moist day, this guide covers it all.
Customer Reviews:
Great Analysis of Subject.......2006-03-28
This is an excellent review of every conceivable aspect of tennis and the colliding forces on the ball. It covers frames, spin, deceleration... about the only thing I can think of that was not covered was differences in altitude and high altitude vs. regular tennis balls. Mathematical formulas are provided throughout describing the physical phenomenon that is being explored. I loved the section of the rate of deceleration of the ball, which helped me to understand why my serves seemed to be quite fast, but only registered 95-100 mph at the net. This was good stuff!
My review did not earn 5 stars because the book is a little bit dated in terms of current racquet choices, and because it appears that a little bit of material is redundant from chapter to chapter, and I wonder if this could be either justified or eliminated in a subsequent edition.
If you have ever wondered if a coach/friend was giving you factual information about your game, read this book!
Viewpoint from Avid Tennis Player & Engineer.......2006-02-21
It was very interesting to read technical explanations for tennis realities... Since the book is filled with obtuse scientific concepts such as Vertical Angular Acceptance, Coefficient of Restitution, etc., most readers may find the material difficult. I've summarized some of the finer points from the book at my blog site:
http://www.sokol-blog.com/
The BEST Book on the Science of Tennis.......2004-01-19
Simply put... this beautiful book is the best book on the technology of tennis and should be read by every MANUFACTURER of tennis gear, as well as those serious about increasing every aspect of their game! This is well written, beautifully designed and packed with information that any tennis player will enjoy and benefit from!
Get the real scoop based on scientific facts.......2003-12-19
This is an excellent book that dismisses many myths regarding tennis equipment. The three coauthors include two physicists and one tennis pro. They are all avid tennis players. They also have incredibly investigative minds. The book consists of about 40 different articles covering many different technical subjects regarding stroke mechanics, ball bounce, racquets, and strings. All these articles represent serious investigation and research from a physicist standpoint. These articles stand on their own independently. As a result, you do not need to read them in sequential order. You also don't need to read them all to extract the information you care about. For my part, I skipped some of the articles on the physics of ball bounce, but was very interested on all the articles regarding strings and racquets properties. Depending on your own personal interest, you may read or focus on different sets of articles. Given the rather dry subject, the writing style of the authors make the information easy to digest.
Contrary to what players believe, racquets have very similar power. Strings, regardless of tension and type have also very similar power. But, different strings can feel very different based on their respective stiffness. Gut and high quality nylon strings feel soft because they are relatively flexible. Kevlar does not feel so good, because they are the stiffest strings.
According to the authors, the pros don't use any of the high-tech latest models, including oversize, and widebody frames. They use older models customized with lead tape to add swingweight. Oversize racquets are not maneuverable enough at their playing speed.
The authors state throughout the book that racquets that are stiff strung at low tension feel better. A stiff racquet vibrates less. Its vibrations have a faster frequency. The ball sits longer on low tension strings than the fast vibration of a stiff racquet. As a result, both string and frame vibrations are dampened by the longer impact time of the ball. Thus, the least amount of vibration occurs in stiff racquets strung at low tension.
The book has a whole lot more of interesting information about tennis than I share in the above paragraphs. If you love the game, and are somewhat of a quantitative type, you will love this book.
The truth about tennis rackets.......2002-12-18
Don't buy your next racket until you read this book. This book, by 2 physicists and a tennis specialist, sets forth what they have found scientifically about tennis rackets and technology. The book takes considerable concentration to mine the lessons learned for your game. But here are a few of the nuggets I found:
1) All rackets have essentially the same power!
2) Stiff rackets vibrate less and feel better.
3) Soft strings and lower tension feel better.
4) String tension has little effect on power.
5) No one knows how to measure "control".
6) Perimeter weighting drastically reduces shock.
7) Backspin groundstrokes are easier to hit than topspin, but have much less tolerance for error.
8) Stand inside the baseline when receiving a slow serve and bash it at the netman. He'll have no time to react.
On the downside, the authors should have done a much better job of summarizing the findings. The chapters are written in sort of a mystery fashion, where you have to wait until the end to get the lessons. The first book by Dr. Brody did a much better job of summarizing the findings for the general tennis player.
Finally, a book that helps you sort through tennis rackets! Unfortunately, the authors conclude that your skill and arm make the difference in how good you are. No racket will take you directly to Flushing Meadows.

Book Description
A multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach is employed to identify principal ecosystems and natural resources in the U.S. Great Plains that are at risk and that should receive priority for protection. The authors are drawn from a variety of disciplines and approaches, their ideas being presented as a pooling or harvest, rather than as a consensus. The 25 chapters provide background and in-depth discussion of multiple issues/problems related to Great Plains stewardship for future generations. The status and trends of major resources of the Great Plains within an historical, ecological and management framework are categorized according to common goals across the disciplines and can be used to make recommendations for public policy, research and development, and institutions. The challenge for residents of the Great Plains is to merge multiple ecosystem concepts to improve the environment and to improve economic vitality.
