    Book Description

It might seem surprising to find the term "venture capitalist" linked to the work of John McArthur, a longtime academic and the dean of the Harvard Business School from 1980 to 1995. Yet, much like a venture capitalist, McArthur astutely invested in other people's ideas-perhaps most significantly when their ideas challenged tradition and accepted practice. The Intellectual Venture Capitalist celebrates McArthur's enormous contribution to the Harvard Business School, with essays from many of the School's most renowned professors, who pay tribute to his continuing influence on their careers and the work of the School. Although the Harvard Business School has always been known for exceptional teaching, under McArthur's guidance the institution carved out a new reputation as a pioneer in both the research of cutting-edge theories and the development of multi-disciplinary approaches. McArthur lent his advocacy and enthusiasm to emerging areas of interest at the School, in the way that a venture capitalist recognizes the viable business that lies within a promising new technology. The essays in this collection examine some of the important fields of study at the Harvard Business School that took root and flourished under McArthur's guiding influence, including ethics and organizations, entrepreneurship, competition and strategy, organizations and markets, and the Global Financial Systems project. In exploring McArthur's work with the school, these thoughtful essays reveal much about the characteristics of effective leaders, and the profound influence that individuals can have with their colleagues, communities, and institutions. The Intellectual Venture Capitalist captures the essence of McArthur's vision, foresight, and unparalleled gift for building consensus as he expanded the frontiers of intellectual thought at the Harvard Business School, and throughout much of business education as we know it today.

For all those who have wondered how Antony & Cleopatra, Lucy & Desi, Sears & Roebuck, Liz & Dick, Smith & Wesson, Stanley & Livingstone, Napoleon & Josephine and countless other 'couples' first met, this book is just what the doctor ordered.

Author Joel Green gives us the straight skinny on 80 famous couples - how they met and their subsequent fate. A few of the inclusions seem to run to "flavor of the month" - Brad & Jennifer, Ozzy Osbourne, etc. - or worse - does anyone really care how Roseanne and Tom Arnold got together?? - but it's all good, clean fun. And entertaining and informative!

A suggestion to the author: Think sequel. Consider the following: George & Martha Washington, Lunt & Fontaine, Winston & Clementine Churchill, George & Libby Custer.

This well done effort romps through many of the famous business and romantic pairings of history, and includes numerous photos too. The Roosevelts,Kennedys,Hitler and Eva,Romeo and Juliet,Sherlock & Dr. Watson, Proctor and Gamble, Bill and Hillary are among the high points. Most of the short essays are fine, but a few seem to cater to fly by night current partners who may not really make the grade! Where are Hewlett and Packard,Charles and Anne Lindbergh? Well, you cannot include everyone, one supposes!

"The Way of Kolinhar: The Vulcans" represents yet another supplement to the "Star Trek: The Next Generation Role Playing Game" published by Last Unicorn Games. The book begins with an overview of the Vulcan people, their culture, history, religion, and government. The second part of the book details the planet's geography, and technology. The last part of the book provides the rules for creating Vulcan characters, with extensive psionic powers and unarmed combat skills, including the famous Vulcan Nerve Pinch. Along with providing the reader with the known "facts" about Vulcans, the authors and editors of this book have filled in the gaps in a very logical and creative manner. I would recommend this book to any "Star Trek" fan, and especially to any fan of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation Role Playing Game".

          Book Description

Smart organizations recognize that Web design is more than just creating clean code and sharp graphics. A site that really works fulfills your strategic objectives while meeting the needs of your users. Even the best content and the most sophisticated technology won't help you balance those goals without a cohesive, consistent user experience to support it.

But creating the user experience can seem overwhelmingly complex. With so many issues involved-usability, brand identity, information architecture, interaction design-it can seem as if the only way to build a successful site is to spend a fortune on specialists who understand all the details.

The Elements of User Experience cuts through the complexity of user-centered design for the Web with clear explanations and vivid illustrations that focus on ideas rather than tools or techniques. Jesse James Garrett gives readers the big picture of Web user experience development, from strategy and requirements to information architecture and visual design. This accessible introduction helps any Web development team, large or small, to create a successful user experience.

I found this approach confusing, especially the separation of structural and skeleton planes. I relied heavily on Information Architecture for the World Wide Web: Designing Large-Scale Web Sitesand Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, 2nd Edition.

5 out of 5 stars Essential concepts presented clearly.......2007-05-31

I wish I'd bought this book when it came out, as it serves well as a foundation for those new to the field. Garrett presents key organizing concepts of user-centered design in a quick, pleasurable read. A visually clean, balanced layout with lots of white space embodies parallel print design principles. My one critique is that the graphics occasionally miss the mark by oversimplifying or confusing textually-articulated concepts. In a world of many words, this book trims the fat and gets the concepts across as well as any I have seen. I recommend it not only for newcomers, but for seasoned practitioners, who may find, as I did, a concise summary worth its place on the bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars A guide with the best practices for user-centered design for the web.......2007-03-18

Garrett has made a reputation in the Web world through his time at the helm of Adaptive Path, which he founded several years ago. Back in 2002, he published this book, aimed at providing a framework for designing for the Web (and arguably for other media) with the user in mind. His proposed methodology is so effective that, even five years after the publishing date, the book still is valuable and relevant. The only parts in the book where time has made it less useful are the sections at the end of each chapter, where Garrett proposes Further Reading resources, many of which have already been superseded with more recent publications.

As for the framework, Garrett proposes an approach that goes from general to specific, laying out the groundwork first by getting the strategy plane solidified with clear site objectives based on user needs. Once the strategy is clear, the scope of the project can be defined, through functional specifications and a description of content requirements. The next layer up corresponds to the structure plane, where interaction design and information architecture take place. Next up, in the skeleton plane the interface, navigation and information design (in the form of the familiar wireframes) can be designed, leaving for last the visual design at the surface plane.

As a web project manager and product manager for many years, I found Garrett's "Elements of User Experience" a confirmation of the best practices that anybody wanting to succeed at creating successful web products should take into account throughout the pre-production and production phases.

          3 out of 5 stars Good book to develop a user-centered website.......2007-01-24

I bought this book to write one chapter of my thesis about Experience Design. I didn't find it very useful (but my objective was academic). Basically this is a book about one process of making webdesign using an user-centered approach (a very good process in my point of view). Another interesting aspect is how the author situates the discipline "Experience Design" in relation to other disciplines like Interaction Design, Information Arquitecture, Usability, etc...
I give it three stars because there are better books available about Experience Design. Someones are not about Experience Design itself but they're about this notion of creating "user experience".
Start by seeing Nathan Shedroff's website (The father of Experience Design - www.nathan.com) and then explore the creation of meaning with books like "Semiotics: the basics", Daniel Chandler. Semiotic is the base to create a significant user experience...

(sorry about my "not so good" english ;)

3 out of 5 stars Insightful, but short for the price.......2006-08-26

This book is a well-written look at, like the title says, the elements of user experience. While I think the $30 price tag (retail price) is a bit high for a 180 page book, and I think the topic would have been better covered in an eBook or long article (or series of articles), the author succeeds in communicating his vision of the pieces that comprise a user experience.

The author breaks these pieces down into 5 "planes":

The Strategy Plane, which defines site objectives and user needs.
The Scope Plane, which looks at functional specifications and content requirements (the nuts and bolts of building a site).
The Structure Plane, which covers Information Architecture.
The Skeleton Plane, which covers interface, navigation and information design.
And, finally, the Surface Plane, which covers the look and feel of the site.

While I wish there were more case studies in the book, I did appreciate the author's obvious expertise on the subject. If the book were cheaper I would rate it higher, but if you can get your hands on a used or discounted copy this is a good, fast read.

If the Civil War pitted brother against brother, the Vietnam War is best understood as pitting father against son. Some of Vietnam's longest lasting battles were fought in heavy rages and even heavier silences across the dinner table. James Carroll is a veteran of many such skirmishes. A novelist now, this book is his story of what it was like to be an anti-war priest in the '60s while his father was an Air Force general deeply involved in Pentagon planning. What makes the book particularly moving is that Carroll comes to realize that his father is no mono-dimensional saber-rattler (indeed, he suspects that his father's military career came to its sudden end because of the stances he took inside the corridors of power against expanding and intensifying the war). But the terrible truth was that neither the father nor the son ever managed to transcend the boundaries of their particular roles to meet each other in a candid, reciprocal relationship. And Carroll is honest--he tells us this, painfully. A very fine book, which along the way reports interestingly on some nearly forgotten '60s episodes.

          Book Description

Joe Carroll was an Air Force lieutenant general who chose Vietnamese targets for American bombs. Joe's son James began adulthood by fulfilling his father's abandoned dream of joining the priesthood. But soon a father's hopes for his son--and a son's peace with his father--were ruined, yet another casualty of a war that tore apart so many families along generational lines.

I forgot that I had ordered it on August 30 and tried to cancel, but you shipped it so quickly that it couldn't be canceled. Thank Heaven! It is truly a wonderful book (topical and timely and all of that). I am way over the age of 13.

3 out of 5 stars "An American Requiem" review.......2006-10-27

James Carroll's memoir, An American Requiem, displays many examples of scenes and narrative structures that are simply ineffective. As I was reading the book, I often felt as though I was skimming through a history textbook. Instead of focusing solely on his lifelong memories, Carroll often would jump into a long, detailed history lesson in which he would drop names in order to try and appear knowledgeable. While one can see why these can be necessary in some areas, it seems as though Carroll doesn't focus enough on himself. One of many examples of this can be found on page 37, where Carroll proceeds to give a detailed overview of various events that took place in the 1950's.
Another area in which I feel Carroll could improve is character development. I felt as though we were always being told of characters that affected his life, yet not shown how. In comparing this book to J.R. Moehringer's, The Tender Bar, it is quite easy to see how many characters in this book are underdeveloped. For example, when writing of Patrick Hughes, Carroll simply states why he and Patrick were friends, but refrains from really showing us how he was so different from the rest of the Paulists (p. 101).
Finally, Carroll has a definite ethos problem throughout the entire book. By oversimplifying his father, while also ignoring his side of the story, it appears as though Carroll always thinks he is right, and that his father is wrong. The final paragraph of the book proves this when Carroll states that his father is "fallible," yet forbears from looking towards himself with criticism (279). By the end of the book, I was completely turned off to the story because of Carroll's inability to look at his father's point of view instead of always assuming his own as the correct one.

          5 out of 5 stars Remembering Conflict.......2006-08-27

          An American Requiem

An American Requiem is a tribute to Lieutenant General Joseph F. Carroll, who, according to the Arlington Cemetery website, "was a US Air Force officer who was involved in national security affairs for 30 years. Headed Defense Intelligence Agency from creation in 1961 until he ret in 1969." He was the father of the author, James Carroll. The book is a biography of the father's adult life but it is also an autobiography of part of the life of the son.

In recounting the difficulties they experienced as a result of their taking opposite sides during the Vietnam War the book also becomes a memorial to the terrible confusions brought about by that still disputed conflict. Through the account of the pain of the father and of the son it also becomes a valuable account of the pain felt by many Americans who fought, protested or just tried to understand.

The final account in the book may also be a memorial to all who try to deal with the new Imperial role of the US.

4 out of 5 stars The Second War that Split America.......2006-05-29

In this book we see Jim Carroll right of passage to manhood. It takes place during the same years of Vietnam. And his families like many others were placed in conflict by it; it split two generations apart like no other war. Father and son were being at odds with one another. And the author uses this book to support his position that he took in protesting the war.

Though his famous father, Ex-FBI Agent and Lt. Gen. Carroll in command of the DIA is the subject of some of his consternation. The book is not about him. It is about Jim Carroll and his relationship with his father who seemed to never be able to fill a void he made in himself by not becoming a Priest himself. And it seems to me this is the large reason for the conflict between them...Jim felt his father expected to be redeemed by his works as a Priest. Though his father never says this.

So when you pick up this book to read, remember it is about Jim Carroll's life and his struggle with his faith and his father. And it does show the spirit of those times. Worth the read.

          5 out of 5 stars A powerful work.......2005-12-11

This is a rare, beautifully written personal memoir of a most unusual family in the Vietnam war. The author was a prominent anti-war priest: his father was Lieutenant General Joseph Carroll, Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

          Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and creative application of theory.......2002-02-24

This is doubtless Taussig's clearest and most straightforward book -- if you think the text here is convoluted, try "The Nervous System" or "The Magic of the State" on for size. Both of these works, as with all of Taussig, are outstanding in their own way, but for the beginning reader in anthropology, this is certainly where to start if you want to explore that realm of anthropological wisdom known as the World of Uncle Mike.

The issue is very simple. Capitalism is deconstructed as a form of Western European "local knowledge" by throwing it into relief with indigenous notions regarding the flows of wealth, labor, and ultimately power. Within the local meaning system, the metaphysical capitalist ideal of accumulation is likened to a demonic force; correspondingly, the wealthy persons in the colony (from whom the poor farmer must borrow money or otherwise "strike a deal" in order to survive) are likened to the Devil. The whole thing really makes a heck of a lot of sense, whatever your precise stance on Marxism.

Another interesting aspect of the book is the way in which Taussig explains what, to the modern individual, is the ludicrous social solidarity found among miners (and by extension, other groups who engage in extremely dangerous occupations). While we modern readers wonder why miners and others love their jobs and co-workers so much, Uncle Mike explains that solidarity is the only strategy of overcoming the darkness and peril of such types of work. Communitas among the workers becomes a moral issue -- this idea resonates throughout the book.

All in all, an intelligent person looking for a clear and insightful read in economics and ethnology will find themselves grinning from ear to ear when they read this book. Unlike Taussig's later works, you don't have to have read everything from von Humboldt to Benjamin to Timerman to appreciate the thesis, argument, and flashes of brilliance sprinkled throughout.

                4 out of 5 stars A misunderstood book.......2002-02-24

First, let me state that I totally disagree with the previous bad review of this book. The book is not hard to read by any means, but to fully understand and comprehend this book you need a solid background in Marxist theory. I found the book to be very enjoyable and enlightening. The first half the the book, based on Taussig's on research on devil pacts and baptised banknotes in Columbia's Cauca Valley, is very good. The second half of the book, based mainly on the research of June Nash on the "devil-worship" of Bolivian miners, does not flow as well. It seems to be a bit jumbled, but nonetheless has some interesting ideas and is worth reading. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Marxism and religion or the anthropology of religion.

1 out of 5 stars This book is awful!.......2001-08-01

Leaving aside the validity of Marxism, which Taussig takes for granted, this book is one of the worst I've read. Taussig's work is so convoluted and difficult that almost everything has to be read multiple times. The really disappointing thing is that after reading the book carefully from cover to cover, the only conclusion I was able to draw was that Taussig writes in such an impenetrable fashion as a way to cover for the fact that he has very little to say. Don't waste your time or money on this book.

4 out of 5 stars Capitalist deconstruction anyone?.......2000-03-25

Don't be put off by the title. This work is a rarity--a complex academic deconstruction of the impact of capitalism on so-called primitive cultures that is actually an entertaining read for non-academics. Taussig visits with two indigenous groups of Latin America as they try to make spiritual sense out of the explosive cultural and personal adaptation required by the abrupt institution of capitalism and the wage economy into their previously use-value, communitarian based economic systems. These communities begin to describe their experience through telling demonic metaphors as they struggle to explain the anti-communal values of the capitalist wage system and its impact on communal and familial harmony. Taussig uses the experience of the newly initiated into capitalism to remind members of the "developed" world a little of how much they have culturally sacrificed and forgotten as they've struggled to normalize capitalist modes of production and exchange. Taussig manages to uncover the deeper truths behind some of the cultural expressions of ambivalence toward money and the mode of life and production most of us accept unquestioningly. If you've found yourself muttering that money is indeed the root of all evil, you may be echoing a pre-capitalist European sentiment eventually quashed by the industrial revolution but still very real to the experience of the indigenous people Taussig investigates.

This book takes very complex theories and theorems and puts them into simple, everyday words that most of us "regular" people can understand. By finally understanding them, you yourself will start to boggle your own mind thinking about other theories and maybe, if fortunate enough, will even form your own.

                  5 out of 5 stars What a book!.......2007-09-04

I somehow came across this book when I was about 12, started reading it, and couldn't put it down. Now at the age of 52, I happened upon it once again, started reading it, and once again couldn't put it down. The delightful style of writing of Mr. Gamov, along with his tremendous knowledge, make this book a real gem. Highly recommended for children or adults with an inquisitive mind.

"In plain words our result means: the most probable distance of our drunkard from the lamp post after a certain large number of irregular turns is equal to the average length of each straight track that he walks, times the square root of their number." G. Gamow

                  Exploration of scientific puzzles:
One book, which I read in 1960 (The Revised edition) when I graduated in Engineering was, "One, Two, Three... Infinity," a wonderful book by George Gamow who explored science and its speculations. George Gamow, a nuclear physicist wrote an entertaining book, describing the wonders of nature and, how we understand facts and perceive issues about the universe. That book was selected as one of the top 1000 books ever written, translated in Egypt to inform the younger generation of the New republic. The fascinating chapters of the readable book on contemporary science, takes you from playing with numbers to the microcosmos on: number theory, relativity, fourth dimension, entropy, genes, atomic structure, the riddle of life and the days of creation.

                  Storytelling by a Renowned Physicist:
In a storytelling style with which the author and great mathematics educator, George Gamow, approaches his subject and grabs the interest of the reader goes far beyond math, science, physics, and mere numbers placed in esoteric formulae. Continuing on through more exploration of mathematical randomness, and statistical approximation of probabilities, simple game theory and related problems. Gamow leads the lay reader from mathematical complexity into a treatment of aspects of organic chemistry to genetic theory, and out to a cosmological mindwarp territory, taking you from the roots of the ancient Alexandrian world through early and later geometrical analysis and extrapolations from the phenomenon of parallax, to the spherical shape of earth by an early Alexandrian mathemetician, Eratosthenes. Gamow diligently coaches the novice through passing items such as supernova explosion, galactic clusters, a collection of diverse examples of stars and stages of their development, expanding of the Universe as the expanding of a balloon's surface, with points on the surface all retreating from all others at the same rate (fig 127). The volume contains over 120 delightful pen illustrations by the inspiring author, adding another dimension of good-natured charm to these wide-ranging explorations, a mind-expanding volume for the layman and the science-minded.

                  Book Recent Review:
"Gamow did indeed 'strive' ... in One Two Three...Infinity - to 'emphasize' the importance of science and technology. ...In his original Preface, written in 1947 at the time the book was first published, ...he did not 'attempt to tell the whole story" of modern science; he also shows his ability to understand and be modest when he writes..." Academon
"It seems that almost all the reviewers had the same experience: we read this book at an early age, and it was so fascinating, so inspiring, and so magical that it directed us into math and science for the rest of our lives." Stan Veroony

Can infinity be counted? Is there more than one type of infinity? Answer: Yes to both questions. Learn how counting things that (seemingly) cannot be counted is done - and, while you're at it, learn about the fourth dimension.

A classic that has been recommended reading for over 50 years!

3 out of 5 stars 99% is unrelated to infinity.......2007-06-30

The book, contrary to its title, talks little about infinity. About 1% of the book is dedicated to the subject. The rest of the book is an 8th grader's introduction to science. The concepts are very basic and while the ideas are explained well this book is not intended for any kind of introductory study except for those individuals who have a very limited concept of science in general.

I found my first hardcover copy of this book in a library wastebasket! What a treasure. The search for large finite numbers and orders of infinity entertain my students every year. This book along with Flatlands by Abbot, and Innumeracy by Paulos should be required reading for every American mathematics teacher. This book is so very entertaining. Topological discussion of right and left handedness along with the Dali like sketch of the view seen by a fourth dimensional being are classic. Gamow was a master. He brings the edges of mathematics and science to vibrant life. Imagination expands when reading One, Two, Three,... Infinity. Gamow fashions one masterful chapter after another.

                                    Book Description

Since the first Earth Day in 1970, environmentalism has become woven into the fabric of American life. Concern for environmental quality has influenced how we think, work, and recreate; what we buy; and how we govern. But popular consensus on the environment is more complicated than it appears. The real question is no longer whether Americans side with environmentalism, but the depth of their commitment. This book argues that understanding public opinion, the grassroots of the "green" revolution, is essential to sustaining genuine environmental progress. The long-term success of the environmental movement will be measured not only by its legislative achievements, but by its ability to persuade average citizens to back up their words with action and to further alter their voting patterns, buying habits, and lifestyles.

The Grassroots of a Green Revolution uses polling data from a wide variety of sources to explore the myths, inconsistencies, and tensions that characterize public thinking on environmental issues. The book defines and describes key characteristics of public opinion, including direction, strength, stability, distribution, and consistency, and shows how those qualities influence behavior. The book uses that body of evidence to weigh the significance of environmental concern in U.S. politics and policy and to provide pragmatic advice for decisionmakers in their efforts to motivate Americans to act in an environmentally responsible way.
