Depressing but entertaining.......2006-09-23
Breaking the Chain: Druga and Cycling - The True Story by Willy Voet is a quick read but quite informative. Assuming his story is as true as the title suggests, it is surely an eye opener. Because of the translation of the book, it is cumbersome to read at times, but for any cycling fan interested in the dark side of the sport, it is a necessary read.
Wrong price..........2006-02-04
There is a mistake with the price of this book. This book is being sold at $10 everywhere else, including B&N. Please correct it as it doesn't reflect well on Amazon. Thank you.
Very interesting read - leaves you wanting more........2005-02-23
This book was a very interesting read. The Festina professional cycling team trainer gets caught at a border checkpoint with his team's drug supply for the upcoming Tour de France - and to no one's surprise, the team doesn't back him up (at least not initially).
The book is translated from French, and even though Voet is not a professional author, it's still better written than most of the professional-athlete biographies I've read - many of which were written by ghost writers anyway. Voet was courageous enough to come forward - even though he was probably financially motivated, to at least some degree, after his team essentially abandoned him when he (i.e. they) got caught. As your riders used to say, "Good stuff, Willy!"
The book that had to be written.......2004-11-07
While this is anything but a masterpiece, it's a book that had to be written. A story that had to be told. And judging by the continued show of doping (drug use) in professional cycling, a story that needs to be told repeatedly.
Willy Voet was the trainer for the infamous Festina team who was caught driving over the French border with a carload full of performance enhancing drugs, just before the 1998 Tour de France. Voet at first claimed the drugs were all his. Then, he recanted under pressure, admitting they were for his team. The team dropped out of the Tour, as did many others under police crackdowns, and Voet went to jail for 16 months. When he got out, he forever cemented his career to ruin by spiling his guts in this book (originally in French, "Assembly Line Massacre" - a fitting title). He wrote this very detailed, very disturbing, morbid read of some very sinister goings on. Unfortunately led by himself perhaps most of all. If you want to know most (not all, but most) of the deep, dirty, nasty, evil goings on in professional cycling that is never spoken of, then read this book. In the 6 years since it's publication, sadly not much has changed judging by the frequent positive tests, and admissions of guilt by riders.
There is a negative to this book though. First, while Voet honestly admits what he was doing was wrong, he seems to want to shake some element from his torrid past, like coming clean is a way for forgiveness, yet in reflections in other areas of the book treats much of the cheating he did in his career as matter of fact, almost with amusement, with only fleeting elements of remorse. Honest or not, coming from a man with a rather sinister past, it makes the book hard to read at times. One might also come away reading this book feeling empty from a lack of hard facts. While there is no denying what he did, and what others do, there needs to be another book written on this subject. One written from more researched, fact based information. There are many studies, admissions from riders, positive tests, arrests, lawsuits, etc. to fill binders of information. Some journalist with guts needs to sift through all that information and put together an old-school, hard jouranlistic, non-emotional, fact based book on this nasty subject. Until that time, if you want to know about the deep details of drug use in professional cycling from a few short years ago, this is about all there is. And taken within the context of who the author is, it should be recommended reading for all young athletes.
Disappointing.......2003-08-28
Breaking the Chain was a truely disappointing book for me. Although the sub-title is "the true story" it seemed that the text reflected more innuendo than it did "truth" concerning drug use in the cycling world. In a time when the cycling world is trying to get back on it's feet after being rocked with gossip about drug use (particularly EPO), the book seems to add to, rather than take away from, the culture of rumor. I finished the book with the feeling that the author wrote it not to inform the world of drug use in professional cycling, but rather as a means of making money (now that he was without employment). I am sorry that I may have contributed to his retirement fund by purchasing the book.

Book Description
American Laughter demonstrates the immigrant and ethnic vision that informed Hollywood comedies, and by extension American mass culture, of the 1920s and 1930s. Beginning with a pre-history of American comedy that ranges from the Spanish explorers to Moss Hart, the author then discusses the refashioning of slapstick, team, and romantic comedy by an immigrant Hollywood for a predominantly urban, ethnic audience. With observations on more than three hundred films - many of which have never been studied - the three main chapters uncover an unexamined immigrant and ethnic aesthetic in the films of Chaplin, the Marx Brothers, and William Powell and Myrna Loy. In the process, Winokur employs a broad range of contemporary concepts in film history and culture studies, while intertwining subjects as diverse as Balkan politics, Art Deco, the Jewish landsmanshaft, psychoanalysis, vaudeville, Sicilian peasant life, orientalism, the stage Irishman, and body' criticism. Winokur includes over 50 black and white photos, stills, and reprints of promotional pieces that illustrate and complement his analysis of Hollywood film in the '20s and '30s.

The original- Dated but Still Interesting.......2003-05-25
This book came out in 1996. In the seven years that have passed Phish has done quite a lot. There are others resources out there that have adopted a lot of what appears in this book. Still, if you go back and take a look at what you'll find here, there are some cool tidbits that have fallen beneath the radar of current Phish fanatics.
Dean went on to found Jambands.com and the Jammys and he is now a Senior Editor at Relix. It's interesting to look back at his beginnings as a crazed Phish fan like many of us.
Plus the book is no longer in print so it won't cost you much- well worth a few bucks...
Cute idea, but only get it if you have the rest.......2001-12-19
If you're a Phish fan who already owns all the other books about the band, you'll want to read this one, too. Dean has some good insight here and there, and was the first to get a book about hte band off the ground. But this is really just one guy's take, its wrought with errors (typographical and grammatical, leave aside factual for now), and it's years and years old. There are a half dozen newer and more complete books, including the all-for-charity Phish Companion and the multi-volume Almanac.
PHISH IS THE BEST, THIS BOOK FINALLY PROVES IT.......1998-12-04
Dean Budnick has written a comprehensive history to the miracle of music that is Phish. From early beginnings at Goddard to the sold out shows at Madison Square Garden Budnick's book draws a pretty picture of a wonderful band. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was the lack of new song descriptions and a more comprehensive set list guide, major shows are missing. Their should have definitely been an update by now and it would only make a great book even better. Wash you fizzi drive me to firenze?
An amazing Phish resource.......1998-06-01
I just picked up my copy of this book again the other day after having read it once about six months ago. Here's what I found amazing about it- Budnick provides so much information in an easy-to-read format. Hundreds of entries on individual songs and people with tidbits and suggested versions, show suggestions, other arcane and fascinating info and some cool pictures too. I always take this with me on tour and in fact I keep a copy in my backpack and refer to it often. Of course it also helps that Dean Budnick is a long-time Phish.netter who has been very generous with trading his tapes with old-timers and newbies alike.
A great resource.......1998-05-29
Dean does an excellent job compiling essential shows, "lures," as well as detailing every song Phish has ever played. Especially helpful are the dates denoting varied or exceptional versions of songs.

Get the reference that defines standards and best practices for technical writers, editors, and content managers who work with Microsoft technologies. Developed by the Microsoft Editorial Standards Group, the newest edition of the computer industry's lead
Amazon.com
With so many software products to its credit, Microsoft can't help but have an opinion on computer terms and usage. Many topnotch technical companies, writers, and editors consider the Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications to be a standard in the industry. Technical writers and editors often refer to it when they can't find an answer in The Chicago Manual of Style or when researching appropriate style issues to include in their company's in-house style manual.
While this manual of style can't possibly list everything that is created by Microsoft, it does advise how to use and spell both general and computer-related terms and takes a stand on sticky style, technical writing, and design and interface issues. This second edition has been updated to include significant changes in Internet terminology and usage. Alphabetically tabbed pages make it easy to locate topics of interest. A useful appendix defines acronyms and abbreviations and shares any special style rules associated with them. Another appendix lists keyboard characters and the correct names that should be used to describe each one. The enclosed CD-ROM contains an electronic version of the book along with a copy of the Microsoft Press Computer Dictionary. --Cristina Vaamonde

MS Manual of style JFO Review.......2007-06-02
Book is excellent, delivery was ok, even if a little bit longer than expected.
Typical Microsoft.......2007-05-08
Like most of Microsoft products, it's not great, but it's ok. Some of their standards are pretty out of date.
If you are a software tech writer, check out the Sun Technical Publications, Read me First, A Style Guide for the Computer Industry. Also there's a free Apple style guide you can download in PDF.
Excellent document standards resource.......2007-02-19
We're using this one at work to help us write doc standards. It's invaluable! Thanks to Microsoft for recognizing that the term is "Web site" and that there is no such word as "website." Hooray!!
Serves a Specific Purpose.......2006-12-17
Honestly...I have been a technical writer for over 20 years and only recently even looked at this book. Granted, I found that how I learned to write was right on target. However, I think following this book to the letter is not a good idea. This book should be nothing more than a high-level reference for any "wannabe" tech writer. Technical writing is far more than proper capitalization (internet vs. Internet) or how you refer to something (dialog vs. dialog box). It's about your target audience, the message you're trying to convey, and the benefit to the end user. This book does not cover that: that comes from real world experience, training, and mentoring. I've seen too many people use this as their "bible" for technical writing when it shouldn't be.
As long as you keep in mind that this book will not teach you to be technical writer - only help bring continuity to your work allowing it to fall in line with others - then buy it.
Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications.......2006-07-16
I was pleasantly surprised and pleased at how soon I received my book. I received it in 2 days from the time I placed my order. I have never received an item so fast from any other place that I have purchased anything from. Thank you so much for being so prompt as this is used in my place of business.

Exploring With Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition
Manufacturer: Golden Valley Press
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 097180530X |
Product Description
On the border between Wyoming and South Dakota, the Black Hills were still a mysterious place to the white world long after the West was settled.
Gen. George Armstrong Custer's Black Hills Expedition of 1874 changed everything. It sparked the last great gold rush in the continental U.S., giving birth to Deadwood but also violating the Fort Laramie Treaty with the Sioux. Their rage was unleashed on Custer and his Seventh Cavalry just two years later at the Little Big Horn.
This significant and eventful expedition was also one of the best-documented in the Old West. At least ten of the explorers kept journals or filed reports. Five journalists wrote stories full of picturesque detail. And photographer W.H. Illingworth recorded dozens of fascinating and invaluable images.
Exploring with Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition brings all these sources together for the first time in a book that allows you to relive the adventure. All of the Illingworth photos are included, along with modern matching photographs taken at nearly 50 sites in the Black Hills. The other half of the book weaves together the first-person accounts for an exciting day-by-day chronicle of events in the Black Hills. Maps reveal the precise route of the expedition including camps, photo sites and other points of interest with detailed directions (and GPS readings) for anyone who wants to follow the trail in person.

Stunning.......2007-03-19
This is an amazing book. Utilizing numerous diaries kept by soldiers on Custer's Black Hills Expedition of 1874 as well as the photographs taken by expedition photographer William Illingworth, the authors have retraced in minute detail the exact route taken by the unit. Using topo maps and even Long./Lat. coordinates (the first time I've ever seen this done - great for the modern GPS-equipped traveler of today), the authors detail the exact route and all the camping sites - the complete itinerary of the two month excursion made in a figure 8 from Ft. Abraham Lincoln to the Black Hills and back again. Complete driving instructions for anyone interested in seeing for himself are also included. The maps are fantastic. In addition to all this, the authors include Then-and-Now photos of many of the location photographs taken by Illingworth; how the authors were able to find the exact camera locations of many of Illingworth's photos is incredible. The book, published on slick, durable paper, is an eyeful as well as a storehouse of information. It makes the explorer-history buff want to head for the Black Hills as soon as possible. It's history examined with a microscope, and for this reader, fascinating and endlessly rewarding. A great book.
Fascinating photos and maps .......2004-12-21
I suppose one could criticize this book as an exercise in trivia, but interesting trivia it is! The infamous George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry undertook an expedition to the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1874. The authors have undertaken a meticulous reconstruction of Custer's route with topographic maps illustrating every step the great man and his troopers took.
That might be construed as pretty dry stuff, but about everybody with an interest in landscape should find the photos in this book fascinating. A photographer, William H. Illingworth, accompanied Custer and took several dozen photographs of the Black Hills. With amazing diligence, the modern day authors of this book tracked down the exact locations from where Illingworth took his photos and took photos from the same place. They publish the two photos, one from 1874 and the other from the present day, on facing pages. Thus, you have a time machine of sorts -- comparing what Illingworth saw in 1874 with what exists now.
It is gratifying that so much of the Black Hills hasn't changed much since Custer, although interestingly there are a lot more trees now than there were then. Moreover, the photos are beautiful in themselves.
You might not want to read this book from cover to cover unless you are really, really interested in Custer, but you will enjoy comparing the old photos and the new photos and the aesthetics of both.

Book Description
The influence of John Dewey's undeniably pervasive ideas on the course of American education during the last half-century has been celebrated in some quarters and decried in others. But Dewey's writings themselves have not often been analyzed in a sustained way. In John Dewey and the Decline of American Education, Hank Edmondson takes up that task. He begins with an account of the startling authority with which Dewey's fundamental principles have been-and continue to be-received within the U.S. educational establishment. Edmondson then shows how revolutionary these principles are in light of the classical and Christian traditions. Finally, he persuasively demonstrates that Dewey has had an insidious effect on American democracy through the baneful impact his core ideas have had in our nation's classrooms. Few people are pleased with the performance of our public schools. Eschewing polemic in favor of understanding, Edmondson's study of the "patron saint" of those schools sheds much-needed light on both the ideas that bear much responsibility for their decline and the alternative principles that could spur their recovery.

You are welcome to do your own research on John Dewey, but he has hardly corrupted America's schools -- in fact, we've hardly adopted his theories at all. If we had, we would no longer have SATs, LSATs, MCATs, or GPAs for that matter. We certainly wouldn't have the No Child Left Behind Act. This book is about school prayer, not John Dewey.
From Wikipedia: "Dewey's ideas, while quite popular, were never broadly and deeply integrated into the practices of American public schools, though some of his values and terms were widespread. Progressive education (both as espoused by Dewey, and in the more popular and inept forms of which Dewey was critical) was essentially scrapped during the Cold War, when the dominant concern in education was creating and sustaining a scientific and technological elite for military purposes. In the post-Cold War period, however, progressive education has reemerged in many school reform and education theory circles as a thriving field of inquiry. Dewey is often cited as creating the foundations for outcomes-based education and Standards-based education reform, and standards such as the NCTM mathematics standards, all of which emphasize critical thinking over memorization of facts."
A "fair and balanced" attack on Dewey?.......2007-02-11
To be in education is to be, at some level, a political activist. After all, education is the water that feeds the tree of a democratic republic, and those who would educate are preparing the youth for citizenship in said society. Edmondson decries the state and direction of our society and this book is his activist response. While the focus of his scapegoating is John Dewey, the book is much less about Dewey's legacy and his work (which is superficially represented in the book - and naturally so; after all, who could possibly summarize in less than 130 pages the oevre of a man who published over 35 books and scores of articles over the course of his career?) than it is about the tragedy of a judicial interpretation of one of the cornerstones of our founding Constitutional principals: separation of church and state.
The book is interestingly researched and is a unique and lively discussion of Dewey. About half way through the text, though, it becomes clear that the object is not to protest the influence of an educational philosophy but to use the cover of education scholarship to engage in the debate about school prayer. In his discussion of the function of education as an apparatus for moralizing he points towards Dewey and Dewey's ambivalence for religious indoctrination as the root cause for this deficiency in 21st century American classrooms. It seems Dewey, in other words, is directly responsible for having prayer taken out of schools - an extreme claim to be sure.
If partisan scholarship isn't problematic for you, the book ofers some interesting insights into the educational philosophies of our contry's early political leaders. The book offers an interesting spin on the effects of our eduational system - spin that fails to address issues of race and, especially, class in exchange for cliched urgings for a return to a nostalgic educational past.
Most Succinctly.......2006-05-03
Most of my thirty four years of teaching the physical sciences and math were enjoyable despite being beclouded by the frustrating confusion of the pernicious decline of educational statistics. Our most earnest efforts in "inovative" programs, better book and innumerable caimpaigns for bigger budgets and better schools notwithstanding, the stats continued their depressing downslides. Why??? Professor Edmondson answers that critical one word question most succinctly in the 123 pages of "John Dewey and the Decline of American Education. It is a compelling read for everyone.
Steve Masone, veteran educator and author of Hammer of Chalk
An Answer to a Puzzle........2006-04-10
Dr. Edmondsons' book on Dewey was a great read. It was an revealing expose' on the root cause of what is wrong with the present school system. As such, it answered many puzzling questions i. e.: Why do so many public school teachers send their children to private schools? Why do so many parents opt for homeschooling? Why do so many parents desire school vouchers? Is it all an unconscious flight from the insidious influence of "Deweyism"? Dr. Edmondson adroitly answers these queries with insight and clarity.
A Must Read.......2006-03-08
My wife is a retired public school teacher who went through the excrutiating stupidity of Deweyism in her career, personally witnessing the destructive effects of John Dewey's theoretical nonsense on our once-excellent system of public education. I am retired from the Defense Department where I was a teacher and a language program administrator for a number of years. Mr. Dewey's perverse theories and destructive postulations eventually found their way even into military education and training programs! This book is an absolute must read for those teachers who have not yet become addicted to the "progessive" educational system with its total failure, nonexistent discipline, and abdication of standards. It should also be read by parents who send their children into the political indoctrination centers known as public schools nowadays. Your property taxes are funding the destruction of what little remains of the public schools and you need to know where all this started and why the "professional educators" are basically modern day co-conspirators with John Dewey in the foisting of an un-American ideology on unsuspecting young people. This book is very well researched and Professor Edmondson fully documents all his claims with hard, incontrovertible evidence of the destruction Mr. Dewey and his followers have caused to our country and our way of life.

Good information, hard to read........1999-10-16
There is a lot of good information (basically everything youwant to know about designing a helicopter) in this book, but plan tospend a lot of time looking back at previous equations and what the symbols stand for. The symbols change throughout the book making it more confusing. If you want information on in-depth details about design, this book can help. If you are just curious about helicopters, I'd go with a less detailed book.

Book Description
Drawing on his extensive experience as a practicing engineer, designer, educator, and researcher in rotorcraft, the author presents a comprehensive account of the fundamental concepts of structural dynamics and aeroelasticity for conventional rotary wing aircraft, as well as for the newly emerging tilt-rotor and tilt-wing concepts.
Intended for use in graduate-level courses and by practicing engineers, the volume covers all of the important topics needed for the complete understanding of rotorcraft structural dynamics and aeroelasticity, including basic analysis tools, rotating beams, gyroscopic phenomena, drive system dynamics, fuselage vibrations, methods for controlling vibrations, dynamic test procedures, stability analysis, mechanical and aeromechanical instabilities of rotors and rotor-pylon assemblies, unsteady aerodynamics and flutter of rotors, and model testing. The text is further enhanced by the inclusion of problems in each chapter.
The second edition provides more up-to-date solution techniques, as well as new material that the author has developed since the first edition. New chapters have been included dealing with elastomeric devices, airfoil sections with an emphasis on composites, "cross-over" topics, and a historical perspective on the subject material. A new appendix has been provided presenting basic material on composites. The text is further enhanced by the inclusion of problems in each chapter.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A002243. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In 1987, Dr. David V. Lamm conducted a study to identify the extent to which firms have taken the position of refusing to participate in Department of Defense (DoD) business and the principal reasons for their refusal. Since his study, major changes have occurred in the acquisition environment resulting from the collapse of the Soviet Union and subsequent Defense budget reductions. Such changes include passage of acquisition reform legislation that has prompted initiatives focused on streamlining the procurement process. The purpose of this study is to identify the extent to which companies prefer to not do business with DoD and the associated reasons for that preference in today's acquisition environment. A survey was sent to 1,300 companies in various industries. Analysis of the responses indicated that 42% of the respondents (primarily small businesses) refused to conduct business with the DoD, twice the proportion of 1987. Four of the five top concerns for not participating in Defense business in 1997 replicated the 1987 study's most serious concerns: burdensome paperwork, Government bidding methods, more attractive commercial ventures and low profits. This study analyzes industry's concerns and the implications for small and large businesses, subcontractors and prime contractors, and major industries.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A125693. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis explores the genesis of a Federal excise tax known as, FEDERAL RETAIL EXCISE TAX (FRET), and its impact on the acquisition of Medium & Heavy Tactical Wheeled Vehicles by the US Army and its sister Services. The thesis examines how DOD is impacted by the payment of this tax to the Department of the Treasury, through the IRS, and it reviews and discusses the direct cost, lost opportunity costs, and administrative burden to both DOD and its wheeled vehicle manufacturers. DOD payment of FRET to its contractors is in actuality the payment by one Government agency, the Army, to another Government agency, the IRS, through a third party, the defense contractor; who is considered by the IRS to be the taxpayer of record. As a result of this "three party" arrangement, no feedback mechanism exists between the Army and the IRS to verify actual payments, or for the Army to discuss and mitigate tax issues directly with the IRS. The result has been numerous tax disputes between the Army, its contractors, and the IRS, resulting in at least three different opinions between the IRS, the General Accounting Office (GAO), and the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals (ASBCA) for the proper handling of FRET in sealed bid acquisitions. This adds complexity to tax applicable acquisitions, and may allow defense contractors to manipulate the competitive acquisition process.

The Storming Media report number is A521393. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The thesis examines the linkage between budgeting, budget structure and decision making, discusses different functions a budget must fulfill and identifies criteria a budget structure should meet to support rational decision making. An examination of the most common budgeting approaches and the budget formats they use follows. As a result of this examination a mission-based program budget format emerges as the most suitable format for rational decision making at the top of organizations. After identifying missions of the current military strategy, goals of the Estonian defense, and the structure of the current defense budget, the thesis analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the current defense budget structure and concludes that although it scores high on one major budgeting function: control; it does not support rational decision making at the top of Estonian defense establishment. To improve the situation the thesis identifies several alternative ways to structure and present budgetary information and assesses their strengths and weaknesses. And finally, some suggestions for further research conclude the study.

The Storming Media report number is A372193. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research develops an analytical technique to estimate the impact of funding curtailment on an R&D program. The method quickly produces a revised budget by year for an on-going R&D program when funding in one year is reduced. We assume program requirements remain unchanged. The program duration may be unchanged or "stretched" to a later completion date. We use the Rayleigh and Weibull functions to model expenditure profiles, which forms basis of the analytical approach. Our proposed methodology accounts for budget outlay rates and inflation. We validate the proposed analytical technique using historical cost data from several programs.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A330953. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examines the theoretical and practical aspects of simulation based acquisition (SBA). SBA may provide the Defense acquisition community with a means to improve the acquisition process by reducing both cost and acquisition cycle time, as well as leading to better system performance. In the past, the acquisition community applied computer models and simulations in a less than optimal manner. Recent use of computer models and simulations produced encouraging resource savings. However, the acquisition community has not yet fully realized the potential benefits of applying M&S to the acquisition process. This thesis also discusses lessons learned from application of SBA to commercial ventures that may help the Department of Defense develop an integrated set of computer models and simulations to improve weapon system acquisition across functional disciplines. Finally, this thesis discusses the need for an acquisition research laboratory and proposes a SBA laboratory environment as a means of further developing and implementing SBA.
