Book Description
National narratives create imaginary relations within imagined communities called national peoples. But in the American narrative, alongside the nexus of belonging established for the national community, the national narrative has represented other peoples (women, blacks, "foreigners", the homeless) from whom the property of nationness has been removed altogether and upon whose differences from them the national people depended for the construction of their norms. Dismantling this opposition has become the task of post-national (Post-Americanist) narratives, bent on changing the assumptions that found the "national identity."
This volume, originally published as a special issue of bounrary 2, focuses on the process of assembling and dismantling the American national narrative(s), sketching its inception and demolition. The contributors examine various cultural, political, and historical sources--colonial literature, mass movements, epidemics of disease, mass spectacle, transnational corporations, super-weapons, popular magazines, literary texts--out of which this narrative was constructed, and propose different understandings of nationality and identity following in its wake.
Contributors. Jonathan Arac, Lauren Berlant, Robert J. Corber, Elizabeth Freeman, Kathryn V. Lingberg, Jack Matthews, Alan Nadel, Patrick O'Donnell, Daniel O'Hara, Donald E. Pease, Ross Posnock, John Carlos Rowe, Rob Wilson

Customer Reviews:
A patients perspective.......2000-05-10
WOW! Thanks Martin Martinez for having the courage to come forward with this life saving information. I am a patient who uses marijuana to treat my debilitating migraine headaches. I believe marijuana has saved my life. I have also worked with cancer, AIDS and other seriously ill patients whose lives have been saved by this magical medicinal herb. Im so glad to see a book written for the patient population that adequately explains how to heal with marijuana. Finally, we have a book written by a patient for the patients! Lets get this life saving information out there so that other patients lives can be saved by having the tools and information to heal with medical marijuana. Thanks again Martin. You definitely are an ANGEL from heaven.
Gave it my Father and he actually liked it.......2000-03-31
I used to smoke marijuana when I was at college and recently my dad was diagnosed with MS, I thought marijuana would help him with the pain but he was really against it. I gave him this book and amazingly he read it and after discussing it with his doctor is now eating a cookie once a day. It won't cure him but it really helps him deal with the pain. Thanks for a well researched honest book.
The New Prescription-Marijuana As Medicine.......2000-03-30
Finally a concise, articulate and user friendly book on the controversial subject of medicinal Marijuana, available from Quick American Archives Publishing. "The New Prescription-Marijuana As Medicine" by Martin Martinez relies both on anecdotal evidence and scientific study to outline the myriad of positive applications the cannabis plant offers in the treatment and managment of many modern illnesses.
With an insightful forward by Seattle medical marijuana activist Dr.Francis Podrebarec, The New Prescription details the failures of past and current administrations to even allow clinical study of the medicinal properties of the multi-faceted plant, while chronicling it's extensive history dating back thousands of years.
As informative but more user friendly than it's counterpart the "Marijuana Medical Handbook" (Ed Rosenthal, Dale Gieringer, Tod Mikuriya, M.D.), Martinez' work does not limit itself to professing only the positive aspects of the illicit weed. In addition to extolling the virtues of marijuana's effect on illnesses from cancer, multiple sclerosis and even anorexia, there are chapters exploring anxiety attacks, delerium and dependence.
This is a well written, plain english layman's guide to medical cannabis in an easy to read format. Complete with appendices, extensive notes, and bibliography, The New Perscription is a thoughtful, serious work dedicated to informing the inquisitive reader from an unbiased yet accurate perspective. This promises to be a must have for activists, patients and medical professionals.

Photoshop 7 Down & Dirty Tricks
ASIN: 0764516515 |
Book Description
Adobe Photoshop is arguably the most comprehensive and popular photo editor around. Here are a couple of reasons why: When you work in Photoshop, you're not drawing from scratch; you're editing photos. Secondly, the program keeps you interested with a depth of capabilities that few pieces of software can match. Unlike other computer programs that have caught on like wildfire over the years, Photoshop is both powerful and absorbing.
Just because Photoshop is a pleasure to use doesn't mean that it's easy to master. Directed toward making you comfortable and productive with the program, Photoshop 7 For Dummies points out the features you need to know and shows you exactly how to use them – no pain; all gain. You'll discover ways to
- Work with the program window
- Switch between Photoshop and other programs
- Change the number of pixels in an image
- Define colors using the Color Palette
- Get ride of red eye
- Blur the edges of a selected area
- Apply filter effects
Photoshop guru and author Deke McClelland reveals his own techniques for quick and creative image editing, along with specific tips that Photoshop veterans can use to take advantage of the software's new features. Plan to get the hang of
- Producing high quality scans
- Adding background textures, bevels, and text effects
- Harnessing Photoshop's layering features and professional pre-press capabilities
- Applying different types of gradients
- Making a Web Photo Gallery
- Placing your image into PageMaker of InDesign
- Creating your own custom brush
Graphics abound in Photoshop 7 For Dummies, with 16 pages of glossy pictures to show off special issues related to color. You'll find commands for both PCs and Macs and lots of step-by-step instructions to guide your image-editing efforts for print or the Web – in no time!

I'm no dummy...........2007-05-31
I've used Photoshop for years (very basic stuff)so i was happy to find out all the things i could have been doing. I consider myself pretty smart, so i was suprised at how easy the book is to read, without leaving me feeling like i should be back in 3rd grade...love the little jokes too
Something must be missing.......2007-05-15
I needed to learn how to make banners so, I got myself this book, although I did not expect much from it. My husband showed me first steps and with the book, I was able to learn how to use Photoshop in a week. While the book is full of helpful information might not be anything but a very basic beginner guide how to use colors and what pixels are, but if you actually want to make good looking product this book by itself will not be enough.
Very Disappointing.......2007-02-23
I bought this book hoping to learn how to use Photoshop's various functions and settings. I've looked up two so far - batch processing and screen auto resolution. Neither are in the book's index, which makes me wonder how much more is not explained.
Worse, it's too full of distracting cute you're forced to wade through. From the section, Resolving Resolution: "The Resolution value determines how tightly the pixels are packed when printed. It's kind of like the population density of one of those ridiculously large urban areas cropping up all over the modern world. Consider Lagos, Nigeria, which is a city of nearly ten million souls - more than London, Paris, or Shanghais. Lagos, in case you're curious, is the fastest-growing major metropolitan area in the world, with an annual population explosion of 5 percent. (If that doesn't sound so bad, consider that it would put Lagos at 33 million people in the year 2020, which would be more than Tokyo, the current topper.) The population density of Lagos is second only to Honk Kong, at roughly 150,000 people packed into each square mile (on average, that's 15 times as crowded as New York City.)" And it goes on and on.
When I want cultural geography lessons, I'll buy a cultural geography book. I don't have the time to wade through this kind of stuff in hopes I'll eventually stumble across what I'm looking for. Few of us do. I'm sure I'll get something from this book, but I wish I hadn't bought it. Save your money.
Great for beginners.......2006-11-25
I'm new to Photoshop but no novice to computers. I needed something that would give me the basics of PS just to get me up and running. This book is well suited for that purpose, but a little too basic for me at times. Of course I understand it's a Dummies book, and even programming books have to assume a low base line for it's audience, so all in all I can't hold that against the book. It does have plenty of goodies to offer, you just have to suffer through a little novice fluff if you're not one.
Conclusion is it's great for novice beginners and still good for non-novices that happend to be PS beginners. And actually, It may even be a decent reference for people beyond beginner stages, though it's not really indexed to be a reference like that.
Photoshop 7.......2006-11-10
Very informative, very helpful. This book has helped me to understand some of the more advanced features of photoshop in a simple language that anyone can understand. The book also has graphs, charts, and very detailed instructions.

Helpful, informed, fair overview.......2005-10-31
I like this book. It's helping me to find other books and other sources in my search for Mary Magdalene.
Idiot's Guide to Mary Magdalene.......2005-10-06
This book is full of Historical facts, however, I have some problems with it, other than it being tedious to read.
Barbara Walker's book called The Women's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets and the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Holy Blood and Holy Grailby Michael Baignent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln have all been trashed by the authour in Chapter 19,20 and 21 of her book. In chapter 20 the authour goes through a number of claims and judges whether they are true or false.
Claim 2- The Diaries of Mary Magdalen exist she says is false, shouldn't that have been, perhaps, not found yet, or something like that, instead of false. I sure don't know that she never wrote any, I just know they haven't found any, yet.
Claim 3 Jesus loved Mary Magdalene more than the others and kissed her often. Maybe -she says, well, what does she want, it to appear suddenly in the bible. What does she consider real proof? A stamp of approval from the Vatican? I think this is unlikely to happen.
Claim4 -Jesus left instructions with Mary Magdalene on how to build his church.
Again, she says false. Well I don't know that he didn't, but I haven't seen proof he did, either. That doesn't make it false, but unproven, in my world.
Claim5 -The Roman Catholic church killed 5 million women and children as witches. Well I have heard that one as well. She says it is a modern myth, but it could be based on the ratio of number of murdered verses the population of the time. How many people do they have to murder to make it a horrendous, apparently its Ok to put to death 40,000 to 100,000 ( a pretty large part of the population at the time) people if they disagree with you as long as your detractors don't exaggerate the figure.
Claim7- There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever that she was from the tribe of Benjamin, or any other tribe for that matter. Any suggestion that she is from one tribe or another is not false but conjecture. She may have been, it hasn't been proven.
Claim8- Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a daughter named Sarah, who started the Merovingian dynasty.
Again False, there is no real evidence either way is there?
In the canonical Gospels and well as the Gnostic Texts, Mary Magdalene was the foremost among Jesus' women followers. I think this should read the Gnostic texts considered her foremost among his followers, the Women who knew the All.
As long as we turn for approval to the Vatican we will remain starved for the Feminine face of God. Females leaders were deliberately eliminated from the Bible. I think she worked too hard to fit it in to main line theology.
Now here's an interesting book.......2005-07-21
For someone like me who was raised a Lutheran, it's pretty confusing trying to keep up with all the new scholarship and, dare I say, the new religions. The New Age is a new religion, isn't it? People are trying to understand reality in a world that the Bible never dreamed of. I think this has happened time and time again, and when any one religion becomes too strong and too restrictive as the Catholic Church did, then people start mumbling and grumbling to be set free. Our Martin certainly grumbled. And he freed us from the Pope, bless him, and gave Christians a new way and new breath. But now people chafe at what has become old and there are so many taking so many paths, a person can just get confused trying to follow any one of them. So I was delighted to find this book about Mary Magdalene, who has always intriqued me, just as I said when I reviewed the wonderful The Secret Magdalene a little while ago. In this one book I can sample all sorts of ways of looking at the Magdalene...plus enjoy the appendices. I'm buying one for my sister's wedding aniversary. These days, all she can talk about is Mary Magdalene. I'll get her this book, and The Secret Magdalene, and maybe even something by Margaret Starbird. I'm not at all convinced by Ms Starbird's theories, but I do love her devotion to Mary.
A very nice use of The Complete Idiot's series..........2005-06-16
These days, with Mary Magdalene pretty much all the thing, we really do need someone to help us through the morass of information, misinformation, fact and fantasy going on in her name. Ms. (Miss?) Lesa Bellevie appears the perfect person to be that guide. I'm very happy with my copy.
Broadly informed, accessibly presented.......2005-05-31
Lesa Bellevie's book surveys and critiques a broad, comprehensive, and diverse array of studies and theories about Mary Magdalene, including the recent wave of scholarly and popular books on the subject.
Bellevie utilizes well the clear format provided by the Complete Idiot's Guide series, such as multiple section headings on each page, making it easy to jump in anywhere and rapidly skim.

Book Description
Pennsylvania and Kentucky are two American states settled primarily at opposite ends of the 18th century by Ulster-Scots Presbyterians. In this fourth of the popular chronicles on this hardy, pioneering breed of people, Billy Kennedy vividly details the stories behind the early settlements and the enduring personalities who came to the fore during a fascinating period of history.
William Penn and his Quaker community encouraged the European settlers to move in large numbers to the colonial lands in Pennsylvania from the beginning of the 18th century and the Scots-Irish were among the earliest families to set up homes in Philadelphia, Lancaster, Elizabethtown, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh.
President James Buchanan was a Scots-Irish son of Pennsylvania, one of thirteen Presidents with Ulster family links, and many other illustrious citizens of the Keystone State trace their roots to immigrants who crossed the Atlantic from the North of Ireland.
Kentucky, established as a state in 1792, was pioneered two decades earlier by renowned frontiersmen Daniel Boone and a few Ulster-Scots families, such as the WArnocks, the McAfees, the Logans, and the McGarys. Those were dark and dangerous days west of the Appalachian Mountains and through the Cumberland Gap and the bloody conflict between the settlers and the Indian tribes terribly stained the landscape of the Bluegrass State.
Gradually, civilized society emerged in Kentucky by the beginning of the 19th century and it was Scots-Irish soldiers, hunters, politicians, lawyers, and plain ordinary farmers who were in the vanguard of bringing this about.
This book records for posterity the outstanding contribution of the Scots-Irish in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, and, as with the immigrant settlers in Tennessee, the Shenandoah Valley, and the Carolinas, it is a story well worth telling.

An Interesting Perspesctive on the Scots-Irish in the USA.......2006-05-22
I found this book at a Scottish Festival in February and picked it up because my ancestors were Scots-Irish who lived in PA before the Civil War. I thought the book would help me to understand the reasons the Scots-Irish came to America, their migration, and their life. Little did I realize that it would give me genealogical support for 3 of my ancestors, Galbraiths who were founders of a Presbytery in Donegal County, PA.
This book is an interesting read for anyone with connections to either Scotland or Ireland. It gives a better picture of the strength and fortitude of these people, who were driven from Scotland to Ulster Province, and ultimately from Ulster to America. Based on my own genalogical findings, Mr. Kennedy appears to have done his homework with his research. This book is fourth in a series (the previous books are the Scots-Irish in Tennessee, Virginia, and the Carolinas). It is interesting to note that the Scots-Irish, in spite of the derrogatory terms used to describe them, were often gentry who had been driven from Scotland to find a new home in Northern Ireland.
I recommend this for anyone who is interested in learning more about the contribution of the Scots-Irish in building our country. Also, if you are researching your family history, Mr. Kennedy's books will give you a better understanding of the contributions your ancestors made to the growth of our nation.
Research Historian.......2006-05-17
Billy Kennedy is one of the first writers of Ulster Scot or Scot-irish history to truly understand and document his findings.
First to recognise the tremendous contibution to history by this group. This backbone of America establish a Culture says James T Webb in his "Born Fighting", a culture of the American Military, Police and Firemen and many others we can always count on. Few groups have been reciepents recieve treament by the elitist and history abounds with words like Red Necks, Hill Billy, White Trash, few recognise their contibution starting with Blue Grass, US Constitution and Declaration of Indepedence and the Patriots to make it happen. They are the mainstream that disturbs those who are not. Insults have never detered their commitments.
Billy throughout his series documents the many incidenteds and contributions while in Ulster is part of a team to expand Ulsters part in todays world. Along with Billy's books, Born Fighting by James T Webb is equally recommended.
A Silent Knight sends, thank you
This isn't really history.......2005-06-12
Billy Kennedy loves to recount every tale @ the Scotch-Irish he finds under every rural outhouse in the hill-billy South--and he never documents where he actually found it! This is not history-its myth & fable to make Scotch-Irish protestants feel warm and fuzzy.

365 Starry Nights is a unique and fascinating introduction to astronomy designed to give you a complete, clear picture of the sky every night of the year. Divided into 365 concise, illustrated essays, it focuses on the aesthetic as well as the scientific aspects of stargazing. It offers the most up-to-date information available, with hundreds of charts, drawings, and maps-that take you beyond the visible canopy of stars and constellations into the unseen realm of nebulae and galaxies.
This simple yet substantial text is full of critical information and helpful hints on how to observe the stars; describe their position; calculate their age, brightness, and distance; and much more. Whether you observe the sky with a telescope or the naked eye, 365 Starry Nights makes the infinite intimate and brings the heavens within your grasp. Keep this invaluable, informative guide close at hand, and you'll find that the sky is the limit 365 nights a year.

Night Skies.......2007-06-08
The book is really interesting. I like how everyday is covered for the month and how it explains what a person can see depending on where you live in the world.
The astronomy book I recommend most.......2006-07-31
I have been in amateur astronomy for 17 years. "365" was one of my first books, and the one I purchase for friends who are clueless about the night sky. A wonderful introduction for the novice, or review for the experienced. Read it through and you'll be ready to give a planetarium show under the stars (or even in a planetarium). Its greatest shortcoming is the lack of an index, for which I remove one "star" from the rating. As planets are the "wanderers," you'll go elsewhere to find and study them (several web sites can help, or the astronomy magazines). The hand-drawn star charts in the book certainly suffice for learning the night sky. Again, the astronomy magazines are helpful in containing current charts for the season.
The book is not meant to read one night at a time, but in general guides you to what is a fun aspect of amateur astronomy: that the sky provides a calendar, a sense of changing seasons. This is the strength of the book: why your view of the sky changes over time, that is, over the course of the night and over the course of days to months, and changes with your location on earth. Raymo's writing is spectacular: his feet on Earth, his head in the universe!
A Classic for 25 Years for the New Star Gazer - Same edition - Reprinted 32 times and counting.......2006-07-19
Chet Raymo's illustrated guide to the night sky, 365 Starry Nights, is a delightful introduction to star gazing with binoculars or the naked eye. (365 Starry Nights may be too basic for telescope viewing.) This guidebook targets the amateur, the new observer that must begin at the beginning by becoming acquainted with the major features in the night sky. Fortunately, with Raymo's guidebook it is not all that difficult making friends with the brighter stars, as well as their rather arbitrary groupings into constellations.
365 Starry Nights: An Introduction to Astronomy for Every Night of the Year provides hundreds of hand-drawn sky charts, drawings, and maps that bring the Northern Hemisphere night sky alive. Simply turn to the page matching the date and begin reading. Raymo emphasizes those objects and starry patterns most visible, and thereby most easily learned by the new amateur. And learning the key features must come first. Star hopping from a known star to fainter stars or to Messier objects comes later.
Raymo's text covers a wealth of astronomical topics, not in detail, but sufficiently so for a new observer. Initially, I expected to move chronologically through the nights, but I quickly found myself enthusiastically jumping around from season to season, constellation to constellation, and topic to topic.
Most drawings highlight a small section of the sky, centered about a seasonal constellation. Other drawings illustrate magnified views of more distant stars and galaxies. Yet other charts and graphs help explain various astronomical concepts such as the apparent magnitude scale, dark line spectrum of stars, celestial navigation, Cepheid variables, and the spatial positions of the larger globular clusters associated with the Milky Way.
Key point: 365 Starry Nights is for the new amateur and it is a book that you will outgrow, perhaps fairly quickly. Even in the beginning you will probably occasionally need a more advanced guidebook and sky map to supplement Raymo's discussions.
My younger daughter, also a new amateur observer, bought a new copy of 365 Starry Nights at list price at the NASA visitors center in Houston. Her savvy father bought elsewhere a used copy in good condition for a pittance.
Accessible Astronomy.......2006-06-09
This book is such a friendly introduction to astronomy. You are given something to observe and think about each night of the year in the 365 essays, which are written in a personal, entertaining way. By all means purchase the book if you like it-- it's a great companion for the beginning skywatcher and lively reading for anyone interested in the night sky.
Knowing where you are.......2006-01-12
I bought this book many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. The book has a short entry for every day of the year. Some subjects might span more than one day, and so you can't help read forward a day or so. But not every night is a clear night, so this worked out well. After following the book for several months, one night I had the experience of walking outside and looking up in the sky and being overwhelmed with the feeling that I knew where I was in the universe in relation to the planets, the stars and the distant galaxies. The book is simple but it's wonderful.

Book Description
Economics, Ethics, and Environmental Policy: Contested Choices offers a comprehensive analysis of the ethical problems associated with basing environmental policy on economic analysis, and ways to overcome these problems. The volume has practical relevance because policy recommendations and choices based on economic analysis are often contested by critics. This book takes their criticism seriously. It seeks to clarify and defend the ethical foundations of environmental economics and examines what lessons environmental economics should draw from the criticism. As a result, the volume improves our understanding of the ethical foundations and implications of economic analysis of environmental problems and policy. The contribution is all the more important because the problem has not been extensively studied.
