The best of all worlds.......2000-06-16
If you are a TCU fan then what could be better than Sammy Baugh, Dan Jenkins and the FWST's own Whit Canning?
I always knew what a remarkable QB Sammy Baugh was but what I never realized is what a remarkable man he was. If you ever wondered where the heroes went, then look no further than this book.
When you combine the story of a true athletic legend with the wit and style of Dan Jenkins and the thoroughness of Whit Canning, then how can you go wrong?
If you are a Frog then read this book and you will be in Frog Heaven and there is no better place to be. Rif Ram.

Book Description
Beginning with a description of a poster for a punk band and ending with a critique of the movie JFK, this work marshals an impressive array of cultural information in attempting to provide an overall history of the genre. Simon closely examines images and films, relating them to the continuing struggle over the authoring and interpretation of the story of Kennedy's death.-Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
pretty good book (for the time).......2007-02-21
As the leading civilian authority on the U.S. Secret Service (and President Kennedy's interaction with the agency), I was much interested in this book by Art Simon. I really like the perspective he takes on the case---as seen through the lens of film, art, and culture. That being said, while interesting reading, this book will not move you to any great depth. Still, I commend him for his unique thoughts on the case. vince palamara
An interesting content deals with an interesting subject.......2000-05-25
It is a good book. However, i wish that the author explored more, as well, the political influence on the information allowed to be released in the mentioned movies and art work.

Rethinking Popular Culture selects some of the best and most important recent work analyzing popular culture. Drawing upon recent developments in cultural theory and the exciting new techniques of critical analysis, the essays in this volume break down disciplinary boundaries in a fresh and innovative fashion.
Eclectic and wide-ranging, Rethinking Popular Culture includes works by authors in the humanities and social sciences. The essays touch on a variety of features of popular culture, from photography to fashion, romance novels to television, jokes to food habits.
The editors' comprehensive introduction sets each essay in the context of intellectual developments in history, sociology, literature, and anthropology and in the study of popular culture as a whole. Excellent book.......2007-09-06
It's an excellent book, the book teaches you how to develop a site in three layers (presentation, business and data) in my ishe goal of this book.
Essential Book for ANY E-Commerce .NET 2.0 Developers!!!.......2007-02-09
'Beginning ASP .NET 2.0 E-Commerce in C# 2005: From Novice to Professional' by Cristian Darie and Karli Watson is one of the most unique and important books out there for anyone that is developing an E-Commerce site with ASP.NET 2.0. Starting from scratch, the authors step by step show you how to get a site running and WORKING well and efficient. Packed with 650+ pages of material, the authors break the steps down in logical parts, show how they go about the work to be done, and then provide the code which does the dirty work. Not only is it helpful, but it's a joy to follow the steps as so much of the curtain is pulled away to show the developer how to get the job done. This is easily one of my favorite Apress books that I have seen. One of the nicest things about the Apress line of books is the fact that they write and publish books that no one else seems to and this is a perfect example of this. I'll close with a chapter overview for your inspection:
01. Starting off
02. Laying Out the Foundation
03. Creating the Product Catalog: Part I
04. Creating the Product Catalog: Part II
05. Searching the Catalog
06. Improving Performance
07. Receiving Payments Using PayPal
08. Catalog Administration
09. Creating a Custom Shopping Cart
10. Custom Orders
11. Making Product Recommendations
12. Adding Customer Accounts
13. Advanced Customer Orders
14. Order Pipeline
15. Implementing the Pipeline
16. Credit Card Transactions
17. Integrating with Amazon
Tack on 2 appendixes to the end and you have a MUST-HAVE book for anyone that is looking to achieve the same goals that this books does!!
***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Great ASP.Net 2.0 E-Commerce Primer/Reference.......2006-11-10
This book covers it's topic E-Commerce very well. It also takes advantage of the new features found in ASP.Net 2.0 including some of the new ADO features. If you are getting ready to setup an E-Commerce site I highly recommend this book. I also recommend it for beginning developers wanting to know more about ADO and database design.
The authors have a great approach to design that anyone doing E-Commerce would do well to follow. Better yet they mention the pros and cons of different approaches and explain why they chose their approach. I've been thrilled to learn some new strategies to improve performance that I hadn't considered before as well as some new features in ASP.Net and ADO 2.0 that I wasn't aware of.
The only negative, for me, is the database as well as ADO basics this book spends many pages covering. However there's plenty of worthwhile content to justify the price. So if you are familiar with database design and have a working knowledge of ADO you can just skip past those pages. I do recommend you skim thru them though as, like me, you may learn some new 2.0 features you weren't aware of.
The book covered all my E-Commerce questions: catalog design, how to scale up/performance considerations, SSL, Security issues, credit card processing, and costs involved. They even point you in the direction of a few recommended credit card processing businesses. Best of all they approach the site creation in such a way you can quickly get up and going and then later on focus on fine tuning payment options and really making the site standout with features.
Great book.......2006-09-13
It is cover a lot of great part of asp.net 2.0. It is easy to understand and implement. Some code is very profession and hard to understand. Most of them cover SQL,ASP,WEB service, security issue.I will say it is the cool part of ASP.net. You can see author spend a lot of time to collect the beauty of asp.net. You will like it no matter how many time you read the book.
a v. gud asp.net 2.0 intro book.......2006-07-20
This would be the best book for introducing someone new to asp.net 2.0. The book is very practical and does it job
educating the idiot like the beginning word suggests in its title. I have notice in later chapters 8 onwards where the author refers to a control when the code is hard coded into
the aspx page. This can be confusing in a beginner book.
I felt that the authors did not do justice by giving partially completed code from chapter 12 onwards. My motivation kind of died after that since there was alot of compilation errors and so forth for a beginners book. It is hard to understand how the other reviewers where able to get the rest of the code running without going through the same problems that I am having.
Unfortunately like other programmers I don't have time to debug author's code.

At the age of 8, Leo Marks discovered the great game of code-making and -breaking in his father's London bookshop, thanks to a first edition of Poe's The Gold-Bug. At 23, as World War II was being played out in earnest, he hoped to use his strengths for the Allies. But Marks's urgent, witty memoir, Between Silk and Cyanide, begins with his failure to get into British Intelligence's cryptographic department. As everyone else on his course heads off to Bletchley Park ("the promised land"), he is sent to what his sergeant terms "some potty outfit in Baker Street, an open house for misfits." In fact, the Special Operations Executive's mandate was, in Churchill's stirring phrase, to "Set Europe Ablaze," and Marks's was to monitor code security so that agents could could report back as safely as possible. When he arrived, the common wisdom was that it was easiest for men and women in the field to memorize and use well-known poems.
Unfortunately, since the Germans had equal access to the classics--"Reference books," Marks quips, "are jackboots when used by cryptographers"--Marks thought agents should write their own poems (or use his) instead, several of which are cheerily obscene. After all, no son or daughter of the Fatherland could ever know the rest of a verse that began "Is de Gaulle's prick / Twelve inches thick," and continued on in a similar, shall we say, vein. But Marks soon felt that original doggerel was just as dangerous, since even slight misspellings could render messages indecipherable and risk agents' lives. His first solution? WOKs (worked-out keys) printed on silk. An operative would use one key, send the message, and immediately tear off the strip. Marks had a hard time proving that swaths of silk would save his people from swallowing their "optional extra," a cyanide pill. His efforts were dead serious, but often landed him in comic terrain.
In one of the book's great set pieces, Marks visits Colonel Wills--surely the model for Ian Fleming's Q--in order to sort out the best ways to print his code keys. Before solving this minor problem (invisible ink!), Wills showed Marks several new projects--one of which involves an exotic array of dung, courtesy of the London Zoo. This gifted gadgetmeister planned to model life-sized reproductions of these droppings and pack them with explosives, personalized for all parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. "Once trodden on or driven over (hopefully by the enemy) the whole lot would go off with a series of explosions even more violent than the ones which had produced it," Marks explains.
Despite such larky sentences and sections, the author never loses sight of the importance of his vocation, and Between Silk and Cyanide is as elegiac as it is engaging. Marks knows when to cut the laugh track, particularly as his book becomes a despairing record of agents blown--lost to torture, prison, the camps, and execution. Readers will never forget the valor of Violette Szabo, Noor Inayat Kahn, and the White Rabbit himself, Flight Lieutenant Yeo-Thomas. Poem-cracking, as Marks again and again makes clear, was far more than a parlor game. --Kerry Fried
Book Description
In 1942, Leo Marks left his father's famous bookshop, 84 Charing Cross Road, and went off to fight the war. He was twenty-two. Soon recognized as a cryptographer of genius, he became head of communications at the Special Operations Executive (SOE), where he revolutionized the codemaking techniques of the Allies and trained some of the most famous agents dropped into occupied Europe, including "the White Rabbit" and Violette Szabo. As a top codemaker, Marks had a unique perspective on one of the most fascinating and, until now, little-known aspects of the Second World War.
Writing with the narrative flair and vivid characterization of his famous screenplays, Marks gives free rein to his keen sense of the absurd and his wry wit, resulting in a thrilling and poignant memoir that celebrates individual courage and endeavor, without losing sight of the human cost and horror of war.
Download Description
Special Operations Executive (SOE) was created in July 1940 with a mandate from Winston Churchill to "set Europe ablaze." Its main function was to infiltrate agents into enemy-occupied territory to perform acts of sabotage and form the resistance movements into secret armies. There have been many books and films about the breaking of codes -- but this is the first one about making them from a man who actually did.
Leo Marks joined SOE in 1942 at the age of twenty-two. A cryptographer of genius, he had revolutionized code-making by the time he was twenty-three. In replacing the outdated and dangerous poem codes with an ingenious system of one-time codes printed on silk that could easily be destroyed, Marks was instrumental in both stymieing German counter-intelligence and saving hundreds of agent's lives. He discloses how and why he broke General de Gaulle's secret code; details the adventures of saboteurs who parachuted into Norway to destroy a heavy water plant; did surveillance on Hitler's long-range missile base at Pennemunde; and organized the secret armies of occupied Europe building up to D-Day.
Customer Reviews:
Between Silk and Cyanide.......2007-07-19
Between Silk and Cyanide is a humorous and engaging account of code making in England during World War II. Leo Marks was not good enough to be sent to Bletchley Park for code breaking, instead he was sent to work on code making and teaching people who were to be sent to Europe how to encode their messages. He was immediately appalled at how insecure the British codes were. The book is about his fight to make better, more secure codes and make sure that no messages that were received where indecipherable.
Absolutely Fantasic.......2007-04-10
I have read and enjoyed this book several times, and given away quite a few copies.
WWII from the point of view of an 20-something boffin. Great story telling, both from the technical side of cryptography and the politics and office shenanigans of the British government.
It has some tear-jerking stories of death and suffering, a few points of the cold-blooded ruthlessnes of the spy business, and Marks' sense of humor can either come off as self-deprecation or arrogance, depending on your take.
A Funny Cryptographer.......2006-11-06
Of all WW II memoirs, Leo Marks has probably written the most distinctive and unusual. In the prime of his youth, a young Leo failed in his attempt to enter Bletchley Park's hallowed ground, and was instead sent to the SOE, Special Operations Executive, charged with Churchill's mandate to "Set Europe Ablaze." When Marks arrived at the SOE, the coded transmissions of secret agents were based around famous poems, but unfortunately the Germans had access to the same libraries of classics and were easily breaking the codes. Up against the establishment and tradition, Marks fought to introduce indecipherable one-time pads of his own invention, fighting British conservatism and bureaucracy to push through his innovations. What makes Mr. Marks' book so different is not only the story he tells, but his natural gift for writing. His distinctive literary ability would have stood him well as a man of fiction, letters, or script, and his turn of phrase is both unexpected, witty, graceful, and as much a lesson as "The Elements of Style" is to writers today. Leo Marks is a funny man, and there is nothing better than an eighty-year-old with total recall and self-depreciating humor who actually achieved something; Leo briefed Violette Szabo before she went to meet her fate and admits to falling in love with her in those few hours. The poem he wrote about her is the highlight of the book, an unusual statement from a reviewer who loathes poetry! There are only a few interesting works on cryptology, the other that comes to mind is actually fictional, Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon."
Between Silk and Cyanide.......2006-11-04
A thoroughly intriguing story. Factual yet reads like a suspense novel...couldn't put it down
Excellent pleasure reading.......2006-09-21
This well written narative takes me back to my first visit to the below ground war rooms that Churchill occupied during WWII. The reader shares the excitement, terror, frustration, humor and pure determination of the Brits. Great read.

Moving on to the Middle Ages.......2004-12-10
This is vol. 2 of the epic, five volume set. Normally, I can see how a reader might shy away from the prospect of reading five volumes on a single subject (any subject). However, given the time span covered and the all encompassing nature of the topic, private life, this is one five volume "history of" set that is worth the time invested.
In volume two we move to the late middle ages. Gone is the semi-alien world of Rome, now we are emerging into the more familiar middle ages of western europe.
Duby;s introduction discusses the different meaning of "public" and "private" power in the Middle Ages. I'm afraid the discussion was a tad techinical for me on the first read, but the theme seems to be the gradual emergence of the state (as supposed to the family) as the center of power.
The second chapter discusses the world of feudal (northern) france and pre-renasissance tuscan italy. Both segments are, to my mind, what this series is all about. I found the section on tuscan italy to overlap nicely with my reading about the Medici family. The differentness between our world and theirs is well apparent. For example, the Tuscan Italians(not that they would call themselves that), kept their unmarried women locked up in their homes. the author repeatedly compares this world to the modern muslim world to give the reader a sense of what he is talking about.
The section on "Exploring Literature" is a yawner, up there with the chapter on "Roman Architecure in Africa" from the first book.
This book ends with a hint of the modern period which lies ahead, but all in all it is content to dwell in the midevial times and is careful not to jump the gun on the topic of modernity. I appreciated that.
Next up, volume three!
very very good read.......2002-05-20
This is again an extremely full meal as a reading experience, though because of the uniformity of the culture - it does not involve such a fundamental transition as that from paganism to Christianity - it is somewhat less rich than the first volume though equally massive.
Nonetheless, there are huge changes going on: at the start of the Gothic era, there was an explosion of availability of materials on private life. Suddenly there were memoires, fiction, more realistic painted portraits (capturing real character and not just stylized), and sturdier surviving architecture, all of which offer a far more accurate picture of the times than was available during the dark ages. Piecing all of this together is utterly fascinating, as the reader is treated to detailed analyses of the costumes, customs, eating habits, and concerns that are reflected in them. You can get a wonderful idea about the texture of everyday life, though more from the standpoint of aristocrats than more common people.
Unfortunately, due to the overall goal of the writing on private life, the reasons behind these bigger changes are scarcely mentioned and hence little analyzed. While my disappointment of this reflects my own ignorance of the history of the period, it might also serve as a warning to non-specialists who want to know more. THe only chapter I found dull was a very very long one on the common themes of literary sources.
That being said, the book covers written sources, archaeology, and art extremely well: they seem to have been converging on the emergence of the "individual" that occurred just prior to the Renaissance. It is an amazingly interesting story. Indeed, there are so many strands in all of this that I found myself in awe of a period of history that I heretofore saw as far more uniform, as a precursor to the modern era or a disappointing sequel to the astonishing unity and sophistication of the classical era.
Recommended.
A Good Idea ...but drowned in florid speach........2002-05-02
This book is a good idea. But there is room for litterature that can tell the same in a more lively way with far fewer words. ...or can tell four time as much with the same number of pages. - The language of most of the authors is such that you wonder WHY they have chocen to say what they attempt to tell in such flowery ways. After a paragraph it's hard to remember "What did he try to tell me now." It's easier to think: "Yes. I can see that you have learnt a hole lot of words, and adjevtives in particular." - I have found litterature about the same topic, put in a different language that manage to do this far better. In fact I've found public reports that with regards to the ability to convey a thought is far more readable.
A Superior History.......2000-01-03
This book is a superior history of life in the middle ages. Duby's research is exhaustive and all sorts of interesting tidbits about medieval life are scattered through the book. Also there is a profusion of illustrations from the period which help clarify the social history. From castle architecture to peasant clothing, this book covers it all. I highly recommend it for readers interested in the middle ages.

Book Description
An Easygoing, Highly Entertaining Refresher on all the Math You'll Ever Need.
What do two goats and a car have to do with making good decisions? Was the golden ratio used to build the Great Pyramid of Khufu? Can it be that some numbers are unmistakably "hot," while others are inherently "cool"? With his infectiously enthusiastic and engaging style, award-winning teacher and author Sherman K. Stein offers a new appreciation for mathematics, from the beauty of its logic ("as inevitable and memorable as a Mozart symphony") to its amazing power and pervasiveness in our lives. Requiring no math knowledge beyond basic arithmetic and high school geometry, Strength in Numbers is an enlightening introduction to all the math you'll ever need.

Examples of why math makes the world go round.......2003-01-02
Since it does provide much of the foundation for modern societies and the applications are commonly covered with very effective disguises, mathematics is both a pillar and a whipping post. More misunderstood and hence feared than any other subject, it is the only one where it is fashionable and acceptable to profess ignorance. The only solution to this problem is to gently explain how valuable it is and let the economic realities of mathematical knowledge take control. In this book, Stein puts forward many valuable points concerning how necessary mathematics is.
While I do endorse the book, there is one negative point that must be made. The title should be different. One of the points in the book is that mathematics is much more than just number manipulation. Although this is well-known to mathematicians, it is a very common misconception. Therefore, the emphasis on numbers present in the title is unfortunate, but probably necessary for marketing purposes.
Now that the ranting is complete, it is time to praise the interior of the book. All of the points are significant and well made. Stein writes very well, explaining topics in a manner that keeps understanding within the range of the target audience, which is the intelligent layperson. His multiple explanations as to why the product of two negative numbers is positive is excellent. In my career, I have encountered several very educated people in technical fields who really did not understand why this is so. They had simply accepted it because they knew it worked, but had always been afraid of raising the question for fear of embarrassment.
Another point that cannot be emphasized enough is the sudden appearance of a "miracle"(reviewer word) number. These are numbers that are put forward to justify a point and are not subject to critical review. After that, they are accepted at a level that makes the belief in them an act of faith. Honestly, is nature so inefficient in anything that humans really use only 10% of their brains? This is an absurd number that has been repeated so many times that it is accepted as gospel. Stein does his part to help clear up some of these problems. However, it would have been better if more time had been spent in this area.
While there is some strength in numbers, the real power lies in the effective use of them, which is the realm of the underlying mathematics. This book contains many valuable lessons on why mathematics, rather than money, makes the world go round.
Demystifying math..........2002-06-13
Professor Stein's book is an amazing read. It's humorous, insightful, and educational. A couple of those "great mysteries" from our math classes in school are solved and you will slap your forehead and say,"Well, they could have taught me THAT years ago!"
I highly recommend this book to all levels of math students AND math teachers.
As Someone Who Has to Encourage Math. to Youngsters.......2001-08-22
I can use the book to indirectly persuade youngsters, who think Math. is nothing but number and boring, to take it more seriously. It's hard for me to come up with more logical and more convincing than what already there in the book.
Both Halves Are Good.......2000-10-25
As titled: Discover the joy and power of mathematics. I divide this book into two halves. The first half is about our relationship with mathematics. It leads you to think of those numbers around you, and eventually you start to think about what's going on. I especially like the chapter on statistical information. The second part is about mathematical knowledge. The eariler chapters are a bit too easy. Yet I like the proofs very much. The last chapter is so fascinating. And it's only 4 pages long! This is a mathematics book I really like.
A delight.......1999-06-13
Stein successfully convinces the lay readerthat math is an interesting and fascinating game. Right on! Such a book makes a positive contribution to education and hence to society.Keep up the good work.In particular, Stein's personal antecdotes demonstrate that math excellence can be integrated into one's total humanity.
