Book Description
This story of how a former junior hockey player became a media spokesperson for radical university students in Canada gives an inside look at the thinking, motivation, and politics of the latest generation of student activists. Answering questions such as What makes a student radical? and Can students in the 21st century play a part in changing the world?, this autobiography also explains the reasons for and importance of fostering student activism.
Customer Reviews:
Every student should read this!.......2006-04-28
This is a fun and interesting look at how the author went from being a junior hockey player to becoming a student activist. It's easy to read and aimed at young people, from high school to undergrads. I suspect most old radicals (like me) will also really enjoy it. It gives me hope that the next generation of students might once again be willing to take on the system.

A valuable study.......2006-06-19
This is an important and very clever analysis of what Shakespeare has been used for in recent film. I got it for my course and after I had watched Luhrmann's Romeo and juliet again. I liked it very much and so did my family, more than Richard Burt's or Mark Burnett's books on the same subject which are more unchaste in manner and can be offputting as a result.

Updated version and based on original.......2006-03-13
This version is a letter sized paperback, with heavy, slick paper
used. It claims that the only other english translation is severely edited. Sarita Vendetta offers up her new illustration,
and are just as, if not more disturbing than ever. There is just a hint of Gorey
in her drawings. The latter part of the book offers drawings
"based" on the originals of Hoffman. So if you are looking for something old and something new this may be for you. Also the
Introduction by Jack Zipes gives biographical info on Hoffman
and his writing of Struwwelpeter.
Go for the Original, Not This.......2002-03-02
The original is a neat classic. This is a modern re-make (new drawings, "corrected" for a more modern audience), and strays from the quality of the original.
To it's credit, it has a copy of the original tacked on as an appendage.
Skip this version, and just get the original, and you'll have all you need, for less money.
Struwwelpeter.......2001-09-23
This is an excellent read. In reference to the advice of most readers of Struwwelpeter to NOT let children read this book, I would like to quote Terry Pratchet: "...it was much earlier than that when most people forgot that the very oldest stories are, sooner or later, about blood. Later on they tookt he blood out to make the stories more acceptable to children, or at least to the people who read them to children rather than the children themselves (who, on the whole, are quite keen on blood provided it's being shed by the deserving. That is to say, those who deserve to shed blood. Or possibly not. You never quite know with some kids.)"
As an educator and once-child, I would reccommend this book to children over the age of 10. Of course this reading experience, like any, should involve a discussion with the parents so they can understand the differences between being a child of the Victorian era and being a child now.
Give kids credit!!
Curious, twisted, with an interesting history..........2001-08-14
Although this was historically a popular book for children in the 19th century, I was not familiar with it until it was referenced in Grant Morrison's _Doom Patrol_. I don't necessarily recommend this for kids of today, however. Adults who enjoy quirky rhymes and disturbing pictures like Edward Gorey's should get a kick out of this. What struck me about this edition was the additional material -- a brief discussion of changing attitudes toward child-rearing and how children were viewed by society, a review of some of the work that Struwwelpeter inspired, and even the inclusion of the anti-Nazi work Struwwelhitler. It's a well-rounded volume.
Bad things always happen to bad children.......2001-05-02
This edition is definitely NOT for children--the gruesome pictures in the beginning are wonderfully drawn, but would probably disturb young children. Having said that, this is a great book. Dr. Zipes' introduction, which adds immense value, discusses the intended use of this book as an instructor of morality and how 150 years of middle-class Euro-American families have used different approaches to teach socially "correct" behavior to their children.
At the end of the introduction is part of a review left on Amazon in 1997 by a reader of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (a book compared by some to "Struwwelpeter"). The reviewer attacked the book as glorifying the murder and debasement of children, and even talked about being unable to eat any blue-colored foods for years as a result of trauma caused by the blueberry scene. I think this reader, like many readers of "Struwwelpeter", has kind of missed the point. This book is not about being cruel to children. It's about warning children that if they are horrid, horrid things will happen to them. If you play with matches even though mother tells you not to, you'll get burnt up. If you're dirty and smelly, no one will like you. The bluntness of the consequences of bad behavior just serves to ram the message home. I found it fascinating that the author originally wrote this for his THREE-year-old son, when he decided that all the available books on correct behavior were either too didactic or too sentimental. This is hardly the 19th century equivalent of a slasher film, with blood and guts randomly strewn about--all the bad things in this book could have been avoided, if only the victims would have listened to people who were wiser than them. Whether or not you agree with the social message, it's still a fascinating read.

Customer Reviews:
Great quick historical overview.......2007-08-29
I've just begun a "Great Books" reading plan and am using this to refresh myself on different periods. Gives a good sense of what what was happening politically, culturally and other otherwise that the author or characters may be dealing with.
Good summary of American History.......2007-06-28
I find this book very useful and, given the price, I would recomend it.
I must say however that I was very disapointed with the fact that this book is mainly focused in the US History, and less focused in Europe's (and the rest of the world) History . Centuries like XIV and XV seem to be lacking important facts.
Besides, if you want to find a date of a certain event it is not easy (there is a glossary at the end that can help you with this but it is incomplete).
Again, I do not regret buying this book but I think I was expecting something else.
Incredibly Thorough!!!.......2007-02-22
As a University professor, I find this book invaluable. The chronology, breadth of information and layout design all combine to make it an extremely valuable tool. I would eagerly recommend it to anyone with interests or reseach requirements.
Difficult to use.......2007-01-31
I found this timetable difficult to use. When the description called it encyclopedic they must have been talking about its size and weight. One might find it informative to just thumb thru and see what was happening in different areas of the world at different time. But to use the book to trace a particular development (like "movable type," or "domesticated dairy animals,") or to compare progressive periods of history between civilizations (like Central and South America, China, or Egypt) is awkward with lots of bookmarks and notes.
Excellent resource.......2007-01-10
I am a writer and have found this book to be an excellent resource. I want to be sure that dates and events that I might mention in my writing are correct and this book is easy to use and insures that my work is correct. Great book.

The Timetables of History.......2001-12-30
As a writer and teacher, this book has been very helpful. It helps make connections between different events in different parts of the world. This has been especially helpful for me when planning units of study for children of all ages. It helps expand the study to a variety of interest areas.
The book is also helpful when reading as I often look up the particular time span and find out what else was going on at that time. For example, the year I was born, 1945 was the year that Vitamin A was synthesized, that Carousel played in New York, that Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Guggenheim Museum and that George Orwell wrote the Animal Farm. These connections make the reading so much more interesting and expansive. These connections have been especially helpful for the children. A really handy reference book. I have another copy.
Good book, and helpful for any research........1999-03-26
This book illustrates very clearly how different events affected or started parts of history. It divides it up into sections such as political, religion, music, arts, and daily life. It proceeds to list all of the events that occured at that time period, or as mostly used per year. This book is a very helpful tool for a research project, or if you just want to brush up on your history.

The Maid speaks...........2006-10-23
I bought this book several years ago and it is one purchase that I do not regret. Wonderful for grabbing a thought, it often ends up in the pile of my inspirational books. There is nothing like a word from Joan before facing the day. As history, it is an excellent tool from which to derive direct quotations from one of the greatest enigmas of all time. JOAN OF ARC: IN HER OWN WORDS puts the reader in contact with the mind of the saint and the events which she faced so courageously. Her boldness, her femininity, her adandonment and her triumph are all there.
Great read.......2006-03-13
This was a good book. It enlightened me to many things I didn't no about Joan of Arc. Like her childhood which it covered very well and even mentioned her dreams of becoming a solider and father's nightmares and even her favorite spot to play.
It covered her military conquest in great detail and made it interesting in a way I have not before on her. But I have to question the parts that reveal personal information on Joan's dreams. She was illiterate her entire life, right? So how did the author get the documents to prove this.
The trail sequence was also very well done. The questions and answers, even though very redundant, were both enlightening and showed Joan's personality extremely well. The references to the saints were like said in the notes slightly changed to make it make more sense.
All in All, good book but contradicts itself in some parts. Probably when the author was changing the letters to first person instead of third, but that is mention in the notes. There are also some randomly blank pages in the notes leaving parts out. The book is very accurate and is a good read for people who wish to learn more about the heroine.
Defective copy.......2005-09-20
I read this right after buying it, but it was published in 1996 and the publisher apparently went out of business in 1997. I would like to know whether it is my copy or the entire edition that is defective - the Notes end in mid-word ("Excluded with then are passages merely rou-") on p.147! Then p.148 is blank, and there is no p.149/150, after which the pagination resumes with p.151.
Compelling.......2004-06-27
Reading Jehanne's own words is simply an amazing experience. The way the book is written, you can almost hear her speaking with all the passion & fervor she posessed. Reading this book is like being there, back in time, actually watching & hearing all as it happens.
An Intersting New View.......2004-01-23
I picked this book up in the library as sort of an afterthought. I figured on using it as one of the resources to verify some of what I read in other biographies of Joan, or to doublecheck a few facts of her life. The paper I wrote took me four days, but the interest this book stirred in me did not fade. It is a fascinating way to see Jehanne; as there is no bias and everything said within is true. This book is one of the most accurate biographies you can get for the simple reason that it was not written as a biography. A planned and presented retelling of a life always has some sort of spin put on it by the authour, but this book lacks that. With this you can almost hear her speaking, can almost see her sitting calmly, frustrating the questioners with her honest and unwavering replies. Whether for personal reading pleasure or for a project or paper this book is a valuble resource.

Awesome book for regular folks to exercise their brains!.......2007-05-24
if you want to use your brain for more than figuring out how to cut corners when cleaning the house...this is an awesome book. I am still slowly reading it, but I"m about 3/4 thru and enjoying every minute! It's all about how stuff works - mostly based on chemistry. But like, why do ice cubes float? Why does it feel warmer outside when it starts snowing? How does salt melt ice outside? Etc. (they aren't all about cold stuff...just what popped into my head first). I have to read it slowly to let it penetrate my mommy brain (this review is by Robert's wife, Kathy). But it is written for laypersons and for enjoyment. Has bar bets and all!
Someone said you won't enjoy if you have more than high school chem and physics...well, there are a heck of a lot of us adults that fit that description!!! I loved chemistry in high school but did not take it in college. We had a poor physics teacher in high school so I have never taken physics at all. So for me, the book is perfect - high school was 15 years ago and I barely remember chemistry. This book is like seeing an old acquaintance in the newspaper...I recognize the terms, but have to relearn it all over again!
Anyway, I am enjoying it...it is a nice thinking book. Not too much thinking, but enough to make me feel like I am learning. And gives me something to talk about!
I highly recommend it and am planning to get more of R. Wolke's books!
understandable explanations to everyday phenomena.......2005-04-29
Scientests may find Wolke's explanations too simple (that's why he has a nitpicker's section), but for those who are not trained in technical or scientific fields, this books is just the thing. Wolke does an excellent job of explaining science conceptually, and he might just raise the curiousity of a few non-scientists that they may want to read more widely. I would highly recommend his two books on kitchen science.
Good for kids of all ages.......2004-10-10
I bought this book for my daughter (12 years), the Indonesian Language version one, and i read it too. It is a good book that explain everyday science in a very easy language. I always believe the real test of good teaching is being able to expain complex fenomena in a simple and interesting way.
Some materials are a bit too-basic if you already know a lot, so i think this books suits teenager and good for enticing their curiosity to see everyday happenings in a deeper way. To teach kids how to think more and get them interested in life. One good alternative to the world of "game boy" and all the bell n wistles of computer games ;-) and MTV.
Great books for everyday knowledge.......2004-01-29
It is winter time in Boston and since I was a kid, I was always curious why people sprinkle salts during the snow. I asked my dad and he told me, it was so "we can walk better with the salt providing some texture on the ground." Well, after reading this book, I now know why my dad is terrible in science. LOL. This book brings up a lot of day-to-day things that we in the Western World take for granted. I admit that I have a deeper appreciation for science and how creative the mind can be. Now I know more about inner working of the events around me. More than that, I feel like I'm smarter, or at least more knowledgeable. Wow. If a book can have that type of impact on me, I have to give it 5 stars.
Too superficial.......2003-10-24
The book is very entertaining and quite funny, but for anyone with more than high school chemistry and physics, it is too superficial. The author introduces only one formal concept in the whole book: "molecules" and does this in 4 lines after apologizing and promising not to do it again. If you know what a dipole, entropy or superficial tension is, this book is not for you. It might be great to get a young and interested kid going though.
