In "A Pikes Peak Partnership," historians Tom Noel and Cathleen Norman tell the incredible tale of the two families who transformed Colorado Springs and its environs into a tourist haven. By building the Broadmoor Hotel and other important facilities to attract travelers, Spencer Penrose, who once proclaimed that "any man who works after lunch is a fool," made the Pikes Peak region a pleasure seeker's paradise.

Since the early 1930s "MacPhail" has been a big name in baseball. Three generations of this one family have provided leadership, innovation and vision for the sport. Larry, Lee and Andy MacPhail, representing very different eras of American life, have each addressed baseball's needs and opportunities in his own way. During the 1930s and 1940s Larry MacPhail served as general manager and vice president of the Cincinnati Reds, executive vice president and president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, and part owner and president of the New York Yankees. He was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978. Larry's son, Lee, worked for 13 years in the Yankee organization before serving as general manager and president of the Baltimore Orioles. Lee later served two five-year terms as president of the American League and two years as president of the Player Relations Committee. Lee was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998, becoming the only son ever to join his father in the Hall. Lee's son, Andy, worked in management positions for the Chicago Cubs, the Houston Astros and the Minnesota Twins before becoming president and CEO of the Cubs.

        Book Description

While you may think the old adage about oil and water being unable to mix applies perfectly to the cinema of terror and the craft of great acting, many a grease-painted scare and fluid performance have been combined in the strange alchemy that is the horror film. From the silent mastery of Lon Chaney's The Phantom of the Opera to the cultured cannibalism of Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, the genre has seen an impressive number of noteworthy portrayals, far removed from the stereotypical leering monster and terrified maiden.

Part One of this work highlights the stars of this screen style—those whose numerous roles and outstanding performances made their names synonymous with horror cinema. Part Two covers actors who, although not normally associated with the genre, still contributed to its history. Part Three covers the great actresses in horror films and highlights their acting achievement. An appendix lists all the Academy Award nominations and winners in the horror genre.

5 out of 5 stars THE ACTORS GET THEIR DUE.......2006-08-15

There have been a lot of wonderful books released over the past decade on the subject of classic horror films of the 30's, 40's, and 50's, with many coming from Mcfarland & Co., who are also the publishers of this book. While most of these books focus on the films or biographical accounts of the actors, Mark Clark's book spotlights the great performances in horror films, a decidedly refreshing take. Clark seeks to give credit for these wonderful performances that often have been ignored by mainstream film critics.

As mentioned in the introduction, Clark mainly looks at the classic horrors of the 30's through the 50's because that's what he likes and it's what he grew up watching. Clark is a "monster kid" one of those lucky youngsters who grew up in the 50's and 60's watching the classics on late night TV. Plus as he points out, classics and old are relative terms. Some consider "Halloween" to be an old horror film.

The first part features the well-known horror stars in roughly chronological order beginning with Lon Chaney. Each actor covered features a close look at one to as many as four or five of their most notable roles, but also has smaller sidebars on some of their other notable performances. For example, on Chaney Clark features The Phantom of the Opera as his most famous film, but then also notes the lost film "London After Midnight" as the first American film that dealt with vampirism.

Karloff gets the largest treatment from Clark with no less than seven of his films featured, and who can blame him..."Frankenstein", "The Mummy", "The Black Cat", "The Walking Dead", "The Body Snatcher", all are recognized classics of the horror genre. Clark Keenly points out that Karloff did more with his body language, facial expressions, and a few grunts in "Frankenstein" than most actors can do with hundreds of lines of dialog. Although Clark does mention it in Karloff's other notable performances, I think his work in "The Mask of Fu Manchu" deserved to be note as one of his best roles. Karloff is at his most sinister as the sinister oriental menace.

Next up is Bela Lugosi and in a rare circumstance, two actors (Karloff & Lugosi) are noted for great performances in the same film: 1934's "The Black Cat". Lugosi's role as the avenging Dr. Werdegast afforded him the rare opportunity to play the heroic role to Karloff's villainous Hjalmar Poelzig. Other great Lugosi films covered are "White Zombie", "Murders in the Rue Morgue", "Son of Frankenstein", and, of course, "Dracula".

Clark goes on to look at other great horror stars including the overlooked George Zucco and Lionel Atwill, Lon Chaney Jr., Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee. While they don't get full sections, I credit Clark for also not forgetting to mention some lesser known horror stars such as Tod Slaughter, J. Carrol Naish, Rondo Hatton, and Tor Johnson.

There's also a chapter on leading ladies horror that runs the gamut from Gloria Holden in "Dracula's Daughter" all the way to Jodie Foster in "Silence of the Lambs" although the fact is that most of these women only made perhaps one true horror film in their careers while true scream queens like Fay Wray and Evelyn Ankers are relegated to the "Other Leading Ladies" section. It's the only thing I can really find fault with in this great book. For fans of classic horror, Clark even provides a comprehensive bibliography.

Do not let this book's rather flippant title fool you. Mark Clark engages in thoughtful, relevant criticism of the subject matter. He even manages to re-engage the reader in discussion of films one would think had already been talked to death. In an era when much of what passes for "criticism" is in reality extended plot summaries with very little analysis, Clark delivers the real thing. If you are a student of horror cinema (and/or acting) this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and informative.......2004-10-29

SMIRK, SNEER AND SCREAM closely examines a broad range of great performances in horror movies, from as early as Lon Chaney in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA to Anthony Hopkins in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. The book has three sections, with the first covering 12 horror stars with in-depth examinations of some of their greatest performances, the second section examining key horror roles played by nine mainstream actors, and the third section looking at nine superlative performances by actresses in horror movies. In addition to close dissection of performances by these actors, there are brief overviews of other actors who have contributed to the horror genre.

Clark has a very warm, and often humorous, writing style, so even though the book is packed with detailed descriptions of individual performances, it is often very funny and sometimes refreshingly personal. He's very open about the frankly subjective nature of his approach. It's a fun book to read.

Clark's emphasis on acting is very welcome. There have been many general surveys of the horror genre, biographies of horror film stars, and even auteurial approaches to the great horror directors. The decision to concentrate on acting is overdue, allowing the book to fill an important niche. As Clark writes: "After all, filmgoers during horror cinema's Golden Age didn't pay to see the latest James Whale or Tod Browning picture. Most paid no attention at all to the director's credit. Audiences paid to see Boris Karloff or Bela Lugosi or, on a few happy occasions, both."

The book is at its strongest and most memorable when it gets down to very close study of the performances. Some of Clark's opinion are a little off the mainstream, but that just makes it more interesting. While the sections on major horror stars like Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi are excellent, my favorite sections covered more obscure horror luminaries, like Dwight Frye, George Zucco, and Lionel Atwill. All in all, it's a fun and informative book for movie enthusiasts and horror fans.

As the generation that launched America's counterculture in the 1960s matures into its gray ponytails and 401(k) plans, one might expect the autobiographies of its celebrities to be tinged with apology for goals unrealized. Indeed, with only a few notable exceptions, such as Peter Fonda's Don't Tell Dad, most celebrity autobiographies from '60s pop culture icons seem rooted in either bitterness or desperation. Fortunately, in Sleeping Where I Fall, Peter Coyote neither apologizes for his wild days nor waxes romantic for them. Nor should he.

This wise and witty, tightly crafted narrative reports on the turbulence of that era with philosophical integrity, wry humor, and unmitigated honesty. Looking back over his days with the San Francisco Mime Troupe, a street theater group that sought to break the conventional boundaries between performer and audience, Coyote rhapsodizes with equal vigor about the company's artistic triumphs and the pulchritude of its actresses. While his developing acting career and romantic misadventures comprise a great deal of the narrative, an even larger part dwells on his life as one of The Diggers, the band of anarchistic counterculturalists who fought against commercial culture's ability to co-opt the superficial elements of youthful rebellion by rejecting the very notions of ownership and extrinsic value. "The Diggers," writes Coyote, "understood that style is infinitely co-optable. What could not be co-opted was doing things for free-without money." And what things they did! Coyote recounts the lives and times of poets, actors, farmers, and philosophers who participated in a profound cultural experiment that tested the very limits of human consciousness and fell--eventually--to the excesses of personal indulgence.

Coyote's evolution from callow thespian to revolutionary communard to seasoned philosopher is fascinating, as much a social and political history as it is a reminiscence. The stories unravel like tender after-dinner tales in prose that captures the rasp and tickle of Coyote's corduroy voice. In the end, Sleeping Where I Fall reveals a man as complex and unpredictable as the totem animal from which he takes his name. --L.A. Smith

        Book Description

Pays honest tribute to the spiritual search of a generation that transformed the politics-then the heart and soul-of America

In this intelligent memoir, actor Peter Coyote relives his fifteen-year ride through the counterculture-a journey that took him from the quiet rooms of privilege as the son of an East Coast stockbroker to the riotous life of political street theater in San Francisco. Chronicling revolutionary economic theories and chaotic encampments, Coyote offers blunt, affectionate, and often comic portraits of fellow travelers.

In prose that is graphic and unsentimental, Coyote's memoir is his attempt to understand the path he forged, and the distance between the extremes in a spectacular life.

        5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL BOOK........2006-07-01

I have read this book 3 times and it is so enjoyable and takes me back to the golden days. What a writer! & such an interesting person.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book On The Counter Culture.......2006-06-13

At 60 years of age, I came up through the whole phenomenon of the 60's/70's and it was a hoot. One of my hobbies is reading books about the era, partly from nostalgia, but also to gain a better perspective on a very important part of my life. Coyote's book is the best that I have read on the subject. He was in the very epicenter of what was happening and gives a riveting account of the scene. If you are interested in the subject, start here and after you have read a number of books on this topic, I think that you will agree with me. If there is a better book on the 60's, and I doubt that there is, I want to know about it.

        2 out of 5 stars Too self-absorbed and showoffy........2003-01-13

If he had written more about the world outside his little group of friends and lovers, Coyote could have had an interesting book. As it is, it's mainly a chronicle of living dirt poor and having as much sex as possible, while being surprised that your gorgeous blonde deer-hide tanning girlfriend somehow always catches you cheating. He makes the common mistake that the rest of us care how many women he slept with and under what circumstances. Memoirists be warned: What was most important to you is not what is most important to your readers. He spends relatively little time on much more interesting events such as the prosecution of the San Francisco mime troupe, and the famous people who came to their aid. In fact, he spends very little time on anyone else at all, except to point out that he knew or met them or somehow locate himself there. Disappointing book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful In Spite of It All.......2003-01-01

I've read other reviewers taking Peter Coyote to task for writing what they seem to think is just a self-congratulatory puff piece to satisfy his own ego. I disagree. Not once in the book did I ever see him claim that the existence he and his friends lived was the 'only' way or the 'best' way, nor did he try to make himself out to be some kind of faultless angel who never made a mistake. He simply told, in as straightforward and unembellished a way as possible, what happened in his own personal experience, good and bad, and described the process that took him from one stage of existence to another. That kind of honesty takes courage few of us can claim to have in any level of our lives.

And anyone who was as heavily into drugs as he was to have survived at all, not to mention completely turning their life around and becoming successful in their own chosen field, should be congratulated. I've known enough people in my own experience who didn't, and I grieve for them to this day.

I, for one, am very glad he wrote this book. In 1964 I was only twelve years old and have always felt a bit cheated that I was just too young to have been a part of what I felt even then to be a special and perhaps irreplaceable time. Reading "Sleeping Where I Fall" has given me a sense of almost having been there myself which I've never gotten from any other work on the era in quite the same way.

Thank you for writing this memoir, Peter. I do sincerely appreciate it.

4 out of 5 stars For Hippies and ex Hippies.......2002-10-17

Peter Coyote's memoir is a must read for anyone who lived through those crazy and wild times of the 60's. His intimate involvement with so many aspects of the counter culture grass roots movement, his command of the English language, and ability to tell a tale makes this a very enjoyable account.

For me, it was also a sentimental journey. I lived on the Olema farm many years after Peter and his clan had left. His description of the place mirrored many of my own memories. I believe that many new readers will find Peter's account brings back fond and crazy memories.

Billed as "The only Access 2003 book you need," Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Access 2003 is a comprehensive reference book that may well live up to its slogan. It covers all aspects of Microsoft's small but powerful database environment, from user-level features to Transact-SQL, Active Data Objects (ADO), and InfoPath. While you probably will want a separate reference for Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), or whatever programming environment you're using, this book indeed comprehensive in terms of Access 2003 itself. Coverage of T-SQL is particularly helpful, thanks to the author's extensive use of illustrative examples in those sections. Further, he takes care to help readers prepare for the imminent retirement of the Jet database engine and the required migration for Microsoft SQL Server.

Roger Jennings' coverage of the user-level part of Access (the editing, formatting, and design functions, and the wizards that make them easier to use) is standard Que fare, full of carefully indexed procedures and lots of hints and tips that call attention to potential problems and obscure capabilities. Later chapters--the ones that will be of greater interest to people doing application-development work--rely more heavily (and appropriately so) on code snippets and explanations of what they do. Even in the more programmer-oriented sections, though, there are numbered steps to follow in order to achieve desired effects, such as exporting data to XML and setting up an InfoPath form. --David Wall

Topics covered: User- and developer-level traits and capabilities of Microsoft Access 2003. Emphasis falls on relational database design, data entry and validation techniques, form design, sorting and reporting, CrossTabs and PivotTables, and Transact-SQL. There's coverage of the differences between the Jet database engine and the Microsoft SQL Server database environment, and notes on developing applications for both.

                Book Description

Special Edition Using Microsoft Office Access 2003 is a comprehensive reference for all the features of Access 2003. This edition adds new chapters on collaboration with Microsoft SharePoint Team Server, and creating or consuming XML Web Services, both of which are hot topics. The XML chapter includes Access 2003's new XML export/import features.

The book's organization follows the development process for typical Access database applications. Detailed, step-by-step instructions with icons guide those who are new to Access through table design, data addition, importing data from external sources, query design and execution, and designing data entry forms and printed reports. Chapters on advanced form and report design emphasize data-entry efficiency and presentation clarity.

2 out of 5 stars I found this book to be a bit confusing.......2007-03-13

The idea is good to try to introduce ACCESS fundtionality through building up some real application (he uses that Northwind sample).

However, I found that it is inadequately explained. Or in many instances, missing the explanation all together. On Chapter 26 - a basic intro of InfoPATH - a good attempt that fail miserably !! I thought he would explains how InfoPath would be integrated as an entry FORM for ACCESS Apps but it was just a basic intro of InfoPATH.

Actaully I want to give only 1 star, but seeing that some examples from the CD could be made useful - so I give him one more star for that.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible Book I hvae ever Seen.......2006-02-24

I wish I could select rating for this book lower that one star. This is a horrible book I have ever seen in my life. This
book Is poorly indexed . I would not recommend anyone to go for this book. I serched google for my acess problems when I found, it was impossible to get it from this book. I can give you one example 'how to right update-query' . Someone go and look in this book , it's horrible to understand what the author is saying insted searh in google ' Update-Query in MS Acess' you will get nice explanatory answers.

Again minus 10 Rating for this book

                5 out of 5 stars Manual.......2005-12-17

Easy to read. Already used on one project. Just another manual in an excellent series.

2 out of 5 stars A lot of how, not enough why.......2005-03-15

This book is not for beginners, and may not be for anybody. It is poorly indexed, making it very difficult to find a desired topic. It is also largely based on step-by-step examples, without enough explanation of why something works the way it does. In other words, plenty of detail on specific, pre-determined tasks, but scant exploration of broad topics and ideas.

                4 out of 5 stars Unfinished Editing.......2004-05-11

Although this book is very good, as are most Que books, it appears that the book wasn't totally re-done for Access 2003.

There are numerous sections in the book that discuss the new features of Access 2002 (not 2003).

                  3 out of 5 stars Who remembers..........2004-11-17

Luckily the authors of this book don't take themselves too seriously, pointing out in their introduction that if they had "dined on fish and chips instead of hot dogs and sauerkraut the day we considered [the rankings,] the results might have been much different." They admit that there is no accurate way to rank the most important and influential people of the last thousand years. I have to agree with the reviewer who pointed out the apparent biases of the authors... they did make the effort to get "nominations" from friends and experts, but I doubt they had the time or funds to travel the globe to do so... thus the scope of the 1,000 people is limited, to be sure.

Ok, so here's my main gripe... nowhere in the book is mentioned one of the world's most brilliant minds, Nikola Tesla. I mean, the man only invented alternating electric current (AC) which today brings power all over the world! He also invented modern radio, X-rays, and the vacuum tube amplifier just to name a few. He's not even mentioned as an aside... well, thank goodness Coco Chanel made it!

An enjoyable read, if you want a rather lighthearted and brief look at some of the people who shaped the last 1,000 years.

5 out of 5 stars very factful, lots of great and interesting information.......2002-12-07

Before I write what I think, I'll say something. It is obvious that this book was done by a combination of liberals, Lutherans (who else would put Martin Luther at #3?) and well, pHds (pretty heavy dudes!).
                  Here's the review:
I found this book very interesting. It helped me give me a recap on history and what to think how the people that were ranked influenced everybody. I love being taught the casual way. Yes, there are a few disagreements, the main one being that Rosa Parks should be ranked higher than #944. Without her, M.L. King would not have made the Top 100. Am I right? Also cheers to putting Hugh Hefner on there and not J. Edgar Hoover and certain people.
I have put together a list of people they should have included but I will share two people:
-John Deere, the man who modernized tractors
-Ted Turner, the one who helped millions of Americans spend their hard earned dough on cable television and who made it popular to watch.
I thought it would be cool if they put an early television star on the list (hey, they put at least 5 movie stars on the list) such as Lucille Ball. Give it a read. Turns out this is great and it deserves to be on every history buff's shelf.

1 out of 5 stars A very narrow view on a wide topic.......2001-03-18

The intentions were probably noble in writing this book, but as an academic, I must say that I found this book to be biased in three ways: western-biased, Christian-biased and American-biased. Just noting the so called top-ten people listed shows these three FACTS. It neglects to mention the infuential acts of some whilst focusing only on their negative sides. A good example of this is Genghis Khan (ranked #43), entitled "Destroyer of Asia". Every other intelligent history reference text will tell the learned readers that the great Khan was instrumental in pacifying the passageway between East and West, in other words, the Silk Road, which at the turn of the millennium was a notoriously dangerous route to travel. With Genghis' conquests, whilst acknowldging the brutal methods his army undertook, the long term effect of this was peace along these trade/ travel routes. This pacification of the land route between East and West made possible the spread of goods and ideas, mainly from East to West. This incited the curiosity and imagination of thousands. This led, of course, to the Western appetite for Eastern goods, leading DIRECTLY to the massive maritime exploration of the West, driven by a desire to reach the East by sea. This led to Columbus' blunder into the Americas, etc. and the rest, they say, is history. Time magazine rates the great Khan as the man of the millennium, and rightfully so. And on a further note, why was the great Chinese admiral Zhung-He ommitted? This book, in a word, typical Christo-Western biased excrement. Do not waste money, borrow it from your local library and then return it with a sour aftertaste. The only reason I gave it one star was because it was the lowest on the Amazon scale. I didn't feel it deserved even that.

1 out of 5 stars A Book of Trash, DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS PIECE OF CRAP!.......2001-01-30

I bought this book and turned to who the top 10 people were and gosh, did I gripe. Come on, William Shakespeare as the top person of the millennium? Sure he did affect writing and the English language but how many lives did he affect DIRECTLY? Writers have had little effect on history compared to politicians, businesspeople and social activists.

The authors exclude Bill Gates, saying he was only a salesman, when he helped to trigger one of the biggest increases in world growth in history. Gates helped to spark the IT revolution that boosted the incomes and living standards of millions across the globe. So did reading Hamlet ever feed or clothe anyone? NOT!

The authors themselves admit to having a bias for writers in their book. So they do confess that they boo-booed.

Take my advice and don't buy this complete piece of trash.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun (but Useful) Book.......2000-08-12

The authors have sifted thru thousands, using semi-objective criteria, to assign each a rating ranging from 0 to 24,000 - then printed a small bio sketch for the top 1000. It's a handy reference for bio information, but we have found it forms a nice basis for a "parlour game". Name a person, and each assigns his own ranking from 1 - 1000. Then see how the authors ranked him. They also have several interesting appendices.

                      Book Description

Through the interpretive lens of colonial theory, Jeffrey Ostler presents an original analysis of the tumultuous relationship between the Plains Sioux and the United States in the 1800s. He provides novel insights on well-known aspects of the Sioux story, such as the Oregon Trail, the deaths of "Crazy Horse" and "Sitting Bull", and the Ghost Dance, and offers an in-depth look at many lesser-known facets of Sioux history and culture. Paying close attention to Sioux perspectives of their history, the book demonstrates how the Sioux creatively responded to the challenges of U.S. expansion and domination, revealing simultaneously how U.S. power increasingly limited the autonomy of their communities as the century came to a close. Ostler's innovative analysis of the Plains Sioux culminates in a compelling reinterpretation of the events that led to the Wounded Knee massacre of December 29, 1890. History Department Head at the University of Oregon, Associate Professor Jeffrey Ostler has held honors such as the National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship and has published articles in Western Historical Quarterly, Great Plains Quarterly, and Pacific Historical Review.

                      Book Description

When people knew the earth was flat and it was the center of the universe, all life revolved around that truth. Galileo's telescope changed the truth. And with that one change, all architecture, music, literature, science, politics -- everything changed, mirroring the new view of truth. This tape is James Burke's examination of the moments in history when a change in knowledge radically altered man's understanding of himself and the world around him.Few people are able to look at human history and see it not as a jumble of half-remembered names and dates, but as an intricate mosaic of neatly interlocking pieces. Fewer still can describe the patterns and explain the parts of the puzzle so that it not only makes sense, but so that it also fascinates and intrigues, excited and entertains. James Burke tells history like it's the plot of the most interesting mystery ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Title of book: "Changed the truth"??? .......2007-07-08

Just a comment about the title of this book...."changed the truth?"....Well, truth never, never, never "changes"....beliefs do, though. Galileo's telescope did not change the truth, but changed beliefs....big difference. The truth of a round earth was always true, whether people believed it or not. Galileo's telescope changed beliefs and understandings about the absolute truth of a round Earth.

Say, consider the resurrection of Jesus Christ.....we may believe it or we may not, but the truth remains the same, that it actually did happen....the truth is the truth, regardless of what we believe....as for me, I choose to believe in solid truths, like a round Earth and the resurrection of Jesus, the latter making an eternal difference.

Burke has a way of making history, science, and
the human condition fun while telling you something
that makes you think about it.

The Day The Universe Changed shows, as Burke has
become known for, connections between many aspects
of human life, the universe, and those odd, sometimes
                      silly bits of everyday life.

James Burke is one of the better popularizers of science,
his prolific works (all the while being the consumate "geek"
in big glasses and almost balding) make for, not just fun,
but learning. Great stuff, and even better for kids who
will appreciate his quickness and ability to get to the point.

5 out of 5 stars The evolution of change........2006-03-29

This review is based on the first American edition, which was published as a companion to the PBS program, "The Day the Universe Changed". I am assuming that the book is identical with the original British edition.

This is another in the series of excellent popular science and technology books by James Burke. The title is a little misleading, though, in that it does not deal with a specific day, rather with the overturning of paradigms (although the term paradigm is never used in the text). The book is lavishly illustrated, in the mold of the books that are companions to PBS series. (In this regard, I do not know if the original edition is also as lavishly illustrated.)

Each chapter begins with a view of the world before "The Day the Universe Changed", for instance, a world in which the sun revolves around the earth and the sun, moon, planets and stars each reside on Celestial Spheres. The book then shows how this view was changed by the observations of Copernicus, Tycho Brahe and Kepler, then how Galileo and then Newton synthesized this data into a new view of the heavens. The same sort of approach is given to chemistry, medicine, geology, biology and other fields. The main theme of the book is that the view of the universe is not static. While Newton's view of light prevailed for over 200 years, it was eventually changed by Einstein. The book shows how the retrieval of the philosophy of the Greeks from the Arabs started these changes. It shows how many factors interact, for instance and how the development of perspective drawing and printing affected the development of science.

The last chapter of the book is the most thought provoking. It proposes that there is no objective truth, but that what we see as truth is actually a construct of the current structure of thought and that "truth is relative" to this structure. The "truth" of an earth-centered universe was framed by the prevailing structure of reality. When this structure was changed by the development of experimental data and scientific thought, the view of the universe changed, but Burke maintains there is no basis to believe that the "scientific" view is any more valid. "The truth is relative." Fortunately, one can skip this chapter and view this book as a history of the evolution of the ideas of physics, chemistry, geology and biology, which it is.

In view of the current controversy over intelligent design, the chapter on the changes in the geological interpretation of the earth and how it spawned the theory of evolution is particularly enlightening. It draws into clearer perspective why the theory of evolution and the geological view of an earth that is billions of years old is such a threat to the paradigm believed by fundamental Christians.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Less Than The History Of How Rational Thinkers Advanced The Human Race.......2005-09-23

James Burke's book traces history backward and conceives of progress as a series of brillant achievements that create in their influence outstretching ripples that set off the strides humans have made throughout time. The witty Burke explores these watershed moments that took humanity forward, each setting others in motion, crafting a ladder upon which, rung leading to rung, our species has reached the places where it is today. Several key thinkers are focused upon and certain events, some overlooked by popular history, are highlighted. This book makes for an enlightening and mentally-provocative study of the achievements of the human past.

5 out of 5 stars A great Book on the history of Technology.......2005-04-30

After you read this book, you will look at the world in a whole new way.It outlines on how random the pace of discovery of new ideas and technology really is. If you want to be really challenged intellecually, then go no further. Mr. Burke has done an outstanding job. I just wish that I could afford the DVD that is based on this book.

                                          Book Description

This book is an introduction to environmental issues which deals both with the workings of the physical environment and the political, economic and social frameworks in which the issues occur. It is about the human impact on the environment and the ways in which the natural environment impacts human society. Using examples from all over the world, Middleton highlights the underlying causes behind environmental problems, the human actions which have made them issues, and the hopes for solutions. Completely revised and updated to include the latest research findings and a range of new case studies, the organization of the book allows it to be read in its entirety or dipped into for any particular topic, since each chapter stands on its own. Each chapter sets the issue in an historical context, outlines why the issue has arisen, highlights areas of controversy and uncertainty, and appraises how problems are being and can be resolved both technically and in political and economic frameworks. The chapters are followed by an expanded critical guide to further reading and a new guide to relevant sites on the worldwide web, as well as a new series of discussion points and an expanded glossary.
