5 out of 5 stars A remarkable career, an admirable life .......2005-08-23

The basic facts are simple enough ... Bob Feller was born two months after Ted Williams, eight days before the Armistice ended WWI. Possessor of a blazing fastball, "Rapid Robert" broke into major league baseball at 17 in 1936, Joe Dimaggio's rookie year. Feller pitched for the Cleveland Indians, ending his career the year Mickey Mantle won the Triple Crown (1956). Feller enlisted in the U.S. Navy December 9, 1941, the first player to do so. He returned to the Indians in late 1945 after serving 44 months. He threw 3 no-hitters, and 12 one-hitters.

Bob Feller is a humble and honest man, and his story shows it. The book begins with critical comments on television's influence on baseball circa 1990. He writes of his boyhood in Van Meter, Iowa, and pitching in the big leagues before graduating from high school. His anecdotes about barnstorming bring Satchel Paige to vivid life. Feller does not gloss over his first wife's illness, or his strained relationship with Jackie Robinson. I imagine he is greatly dismayed by today's steroid abuse allegations.

He calls on current players to contribute more to baseball's pension plan. When Feller played, salaries were much lower. Many big-leaguers worked in the off-season to supplement their incomes. Over the last thirty years, free agency and escalating TV contracts have made mediocre players millionaires. Feller is not jealous. He seeks a fair shake for many aging and retired former ballplayers in danger of being forgotten by the system.

Baseball autobiographies abound. I rank Feller's with Hank Aaron's "I Had a Hammer" and John Kruk's "I Ain't an Athlete, Lady..." among the most memorable. Highly recommended.

                    Book Description

From the silent era and The Black Hand (1906) to The Sopranos, Hollywood has had a love-hate affair with Italian Americans. This book is a celebration of nearly one hundred years of images of Italians in American motion pictures. It covers all the stars as well as directors: Danny Aiello, Frank Capra, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert De Niro, Brian De Palma, Leonardo Di Caprio, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, Dean Martin, Vincente Minnelli, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Martin Scorsese, Frank Sinatra, Marisa Tomei, John Travolta, Rudolph Valentino, and scores of others. Dozens of films are discussed, including, very often, their literary and European-cinematic roots. Hollywood Italians is capped by a definitive examination of Coppola's Godfather films as well as the international-television phenomenon The Sopranos.

                        4 out of 5 stars Mecha Madness.......1999-11-24

GURPS is well known for its flexible and seemingly limitless possibilities for plots and adventures. GURPS Mecha is a refreshing alternative to the standard "party in a dungeon fighting monsters" RPG setting. If you're a fan of Starship Troopers, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, or such anime as Robotech, Mobile Suit Gundam, or Neon Genesis Evanglion, you will enjoy this genre of play. Be battlesuit-wearing warriors or control 200,000 pound mechs to crush your enemies. If you are a beginner, this book is easy to understand and takes you through the process of constructing your mechs and characters step by step. If you are a more advanced player, it shouldn't take you long to pick up the pace. The book covers some very innovative and fascinating character backgrounds, plot ideas, and extras (read the Bonded Mecha advantage and you will see what I mean). The potential for roleplay is great as well. You can play your characters in a classic anime style, or in a dramatic Hollywood manner. Okay, here's the bad part. First of all, you need to have the GURPS Basic Set. You knew that, right? Well, to fully enjoy your roleplaying experience I recommend getting GURPS Compendium I, GURPS Vehicles, and GURPS Ultra Tech/Ultra Tech 2. GURPS Compendium I allows for characters more suited for your campaign, and it is practically a staple for GURPS campaigns (you may have it already). GURPS Vehicles lets you have more elaborate Mecha designs, and GURPS Ultra Tech gives you a large variety of weaponry and technology. Basically, if you are looking for a refreshing change of pace in you role playing experience, I recommend picking up GURPS Mecha.

4 out of 5 stars A Birthday Gift That Got Used........2007-09-10

This was one of the 'how to' books I bought for my husband for his birthday. He had been remarking how he was tempted to build his own computer! Just last night he said he was ready to put his newly built computer in a permanent place - thanks due to several times referring to these books and got the answers he needed! He was glad to cross compare what one book said and how another might reword the same topic. Bottom line: A Computer Was Built!

                        5 out of 5 stars A solid reference.......2006-11-08

This is probably the best "how-to" book on home PC building. Most are either too specialized (case modding, fancy cooling solutions, etc) or too basic (pick a motherboard... pick a CPU... put them together... The end!), but this work is just right. It is very informative, even to someone who considers themselves a very experienced PC user, yet remains straightforward, and anticipated many common concerns. The only downside is that this type of book is out of date very soon after publication. This volume only covers Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 systems, but obviously doesn't include the new Socket 775 Core 2 Duo processors from Intel, or the socket AM2 Athlon X2 from AMD. That said, I recommend the book and the author very highly.

                        5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2006-04-11

I bought this book because I wanted to build a computer but was a little nervous about doing it. This book tells you everything you need to know and gives you the confidence to build your own pc. My pc build went flawlessly and I have this book to thank for it. The illustrations are very helpful and informative. I had a general knowledge of computers but had never built one from scratch. This book is great for people that don't have much experience with computers because it explains everything in detail, describing all of the parts and has 3 different build configurations. Pretty much everything is covered between the 3 different build so that no matter what kind you will build, it will be covered in this book. I highly recommend this book.

This atlas offers a balanced and comprehensive visual history of the age-old Arab-Israeli conflict, spanning from the early history of the region (c. 1,000 B.C.) to the foundation of the state of Israel, the intifada, and the peace initiatives of the 1990s. Clear, informative, and accessible maps detail the course of major events, including the Six Day War, the October War, and the Arab world's reaction to the Camp David agreements, and offer useful insight into the social, political, military, and diplomatic dimensions of the current situation. Powerful and telling quotations from those involved on both sides, and detailed annotations provide important historical background on this volatile conflict.

Gilbert's precision and attention to detail makes this book an invaluable resource. This book helps give the reader an overview of a complex, winding history in short space. For those who accuse him of partiality perhaps they can suggest a satisfactory alternative, or provide specific examples?

When I read the book description on Amazon ("This atlas offers a balanced and comprehensive visual history of the age-old Arab-Israeli conflict") I had to laugh. First of all, for a "historical" book to describe the Arab-Israeli conflict as "age-old" is ludicrous, and I think, illustrates the kind of "historian" that Gilbert is (that is, not a very good one). This book is not comprehensive, and it is CERTAINLY not balanced. It's clearly Zionist in it's viewpoint and heavily skewed in its presentation.

                        Book Description

Public executions were once commonplace American spectacles. In one instance, Puritan clergymen convicted and executed nineteen people for the "crime" of witchcraft. On the other side of the country many years later, San Francisco's city fathers held "official" vigilante hangings. But today, executions are rigidly controlled bureaucratic procedures authorized by the state.

In The Hangman's Knot: Lynching, Legal Execution, and America's Struggle with the Death Penalty, Eliza Steelwater presents a fascinating history of execution in the United States, from colonial times to the present. With a compelling narrative and gripping personal stories, she documents how this debate became one of the most contentious of our time. The author, a veteran death-penalty researcher and co-founder of Project HAL (Historical American Lynching), shows that the answer to the death penalty's future lies in a discussion of its past.

Using information from Project HAL and the authoritative Capital Punishment Research Project - including records of over 15,000 legal executions and 4,500 lynchings nationwide - Steelwater delivers a vivid understanding that America's unparalleled and powerful 200-year-old policy of execution as "punishment politics" is alive and well today. Bringing a fresh perspective to the death-penalty debate, she demonstrates that execution has often had less to do with crimes committed than with the political and economic ambitions of those who controlled the punishment system.

Eliza Steelwater writes clearly, consisely and not without humour on a subject that most people choose not to think about, providing us with the historical context which allows us to understand how Europe and America came to be divided on whether legal execution is the most appropriate action to be taken as a response to a serious crime. As Ms Steelwater confirms, execution has never been proved to be a deterrent. More worringly it is a punishment which is almost exclusively meted out to minorities and to the poorest in society. As the history of legal execution and lynchings in the US unfolds the case against the death sentence is strengthened. However, this is not the main purpose of the book, rather that we understand the context for and the discrepancies in applying the death sentence in the USA. Whether you are interested in history or in social justice, this book is an excellent read that will keep you thinking long after you have finished turning the pages.

This book is well researched so that the reader can have a high level of confidence in the facts presented. You can be assured that the facts are startling and shocking. The book points out that half of the prisoners in the world are in the prisons and jails of the USA. It just gets worse from there. There are too many errors and too much lack of justice in our justice system.

John Lamb killed one person and was executed for his crime. Sammy "The Bull" Gravano killed 19 persons and was given a soft sentance. In the USA there are about 22,000 homicides each year and only about 300 defendants are advanced to death row. They are almost all poor, have bad attorneys and are 99% male. Getting the death penalty is kind of a backwards lottery. If everything goes wrong, much of it out of the defendants control, such as your lawyer falling asleep in the courthouse, eyewitnesses lying (very common occurance), being born poor and being born the wrong gender, then the defendant may very well end up on death row. In order to "win" this horrific backwards lottery it helps to be on trial in Texas which has the most executions of any State. The law in texas is so punitive toward the defendant that at least one person was executed after he was found to be innocent by new evidence not allowed to be even considered due to an arbitrary 30 day time limit on bringing in new evidence.

Excellent book, but not a book that is easy to read. Facing our country's history in this area makes us look at our past and often gives a different slant on what we have accepted as history. The information in the book is so well researched and documented. The author does not rely on personal opinion to make her points, but cites numerous sources. She presents evidence and allows the reader to form their own opinion. Anyone with an interest in history and the social conscience of America would find this a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding capital punishment.......2003-09-16

This book's importance reaches beyond the debate over the death penalty as it demonstrates and explains the relationship between power, money and punishment in America. It is a fascinating story, representing years of research by one of the best and most original minds in the country. Dr. Steelwater's examples brilliantly illustrate communities' and the State's involvement with capital punishment within the context of the contemporary events that shaped American attitudes toward community vigilantism and State supported and regulated legal execution. From the frontier experience to industrial labor unrest, from the racial violence of the Deep South to the mayhem of Western boom towns (and much more), violent historical events have shaped our attitudes about the need for and right of the community and the State to take life as retribution and/or deterrent. The Hangman's Knot is immensely readable with a bibliographic essay for each chapter. It should be included in the library of anyone who has an opinion about capital punishment. American history, social theory and economic geography are elegantly merged in this deeply intelligent and humane book.

This superbly written and authoritative book is a must for anyone wishing to learn more about America's relationship with the death penalty. The author has a readable style and uses historical and latter-day case studies to provide an excellent context within this thought-provoking text. Highly recommended to all!

You know how _frustrating_ it is, reading a platonic dialog? Some question like "What is virtue?" or "What is justice" is asked, and Socretes goes on for pages showing that the so-called "experts" don't have a clue about what it really is?

But what's _really_ frustrating is that you're all expecting, at the end of the dialog, after following a hard line of argument, that you'll be rewarded with THE definitivie definition of 'virtue' or 'justice' or whatever--only to be disapointed. All you get in the end is a new appreciation of your own hopeless ignorance...

...well, imagine a platonic dialog which started the same as any other platonic dialog, but with the question "What is a number?" Only this time, at the end of the dialog, you actually get an answer to the question?

In retrospect, its pretty amazing that Plato didn't write a Socratic dialog concerned with the question "What is number?' After all, Plato considered numbers more real than physical objects, and people like the Pythagorians were going around claiming that everything _was_ made out of numbers. But what the heck _is_ a number, anyways?

Perhaps the reason was that everybody thought they already understood what numbers were. But Frege, like Socretes before him, realized that this so-called knowledge was really just a collective ignorance. So Frege starts out this book with a thorough, merciless review of what his coleages and predicessors were saying about what numbers were, showing that they ranged from cocksure to confused, from pompously-wrongheaded to just plain silly.

But then Frege does something really amazing--for the first time in history, he goes on give a real answer to the question "what are numbers?" Building on the work of Hume, he gives a sustained argument now known as "Frege's theorem" which shows how numbers can be grounded on an understanding of one-to-one correspondence.

Unfortunately, this work had to wait almost a century for the rest of us to really catch up to its significance. Russell found a contradiction in the arguments presented here, and for the next 80 years attention shifted elsewhere. But first Charles Parsons, in 1964, and then Crispen Wright and others in the 80's and 90's begain to realize that Frege's theorem could be reconstructed without the paradox. This sparked a whole flurry of neo-Fregean studies which is one of the most active branches of analytic philosophy today.

This revival means that Frege's importance, and the importance of reading and comming to grips with the arguments presented by Frege in this book, are going to continue to grow. Although tragically Frege didn't live to see the day, we now realize that the line of reasoning he followed in this book was one of those signature moments in human history, every bit as profound as the invention of the wheel or the discovery of the pythagorian theorem--it was the moment where, for the first time ever, the question "what the heck _are_ numbers, anyways?" got a real answer.

4 out of 5 stars Frege, You're Not Supposed To Have..........2004-03-24

*The Foundations of Arithmetic*, one of the most durable works of philosophy of mathematics ever produced, is something of a curiosity as presented by J.L. Austin (who translated the work for the use of an Oxford undergraduate course); and perhaps Frege's platonism got the best of Austin, and this work is really just as , well, Kantian as it appears, "a good sight" more Kantian than "standard" Frege is typically allowed to be. Frege's definition of number in terms of equipollence (one-one correspondence of sets) is legendary: that is to say, it is traditionally understood to do a great deal more work than the "thin" version allowed by mathematical logic as reconstructed to avoid Russell's paradox.

But here Frege's work-up of the concept for a general readership is so "genteel" as to suggest that this may not in fact be the case, and that Frege actually partook more heavily of Neo-Kantian bromides than his *theory of arithmetic* suggests; to wit, that this theory was always intended to be situated within a general philosophy of mathematics obeying the strictures of reasoning involving Kantian "intuition" (as is typically said of Frege's last efforts in the field). As such, it would be unfortunate that we cannot effectively read this book (formerly available *en face*, and unfortunately much the worse for the original's omission) in conjunction with its contemporary geometrical counterpart: long out of print, rarely making its way into the philosophical Frege literature, and perhaps in all parts an *anticipatory* if "crochety" rebuke to Hilbertian formalism.

Perhaps Frege was to a certain extent wholly other than the mathematics of his time; perhaps we are not well-served by a Frege "out of time"; we certainly have one of the great prose stylists of English on hand here, and perhaps it would actually do to consider his aptitude for "gold" extraction here as a clue to puzzling out the rest of Frege -- a figure supremely unconcerned with sameness of meaning, and already owing a certain debt to those para-philosophical figures all his work is at cross-purposes with (the German '70s having been quite a time indeed). A great help to understanding number theory, a marvelous thing for a library to have.

                        4 out of 5 stars Excellent work.......2003-06-14

His conclusion (p.99e) is that the laws of arithmetic are analytic judgements and consequently a priori.

Note that he is very consistently hard on Mill.

Some interesting quotes: p. 115e #106. "...number is neither a collection of things nor a property of such, yet at the same time is not a subjective product of mental processes either, we concluded that a statement of number asserts something objective of a concept.

... (p. 116e) We next laid down the fundamental principle that we must never try to define the meaning of a word in isolation, but only as it is used in the context of a proposition: only by adhering to this can we, as I believe, avoid a physical view of it.

#107. (p.117e) "A recognition statement must always have a sense."

                        5 out of 5 stars great work.......2001-11-28

possibly one of the greatest works in history of philosophy and the founding book of 20th century analytic philosophy... I read it only once and a better appraisal will be coming shortly..I can say right away this is not simply a 'technical' work in philosophy of mathematics but a broad although short philosophical investigation in notions of truth, meaning and identity - although it expressly deals with defining numbers in purely logical terms. continental philosophers who read this work might change some of their negative ideas about where analytic philosophy is coming from.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Philosopher of Mathematics.......2000-09-24

This book written by Gottlob Frege is one of the most influential books of the 20th century philosophy of mathematics. In here Frege establishes the nature of arithmetics as founded in logic, which is his logicist proposal. For that, he refutes the assertion that logic as such is founded on psychology.

Sometimes he distorts a little bit what others say about logic, so he argues against those thinkers more effectively. In here he establishes the anti-psycology difference between concept and object; though he has not made a difference yet between sense and reference. He also refers to a principle called the contextual principle, in which the word makes reference to something depending on the context. Afterwards after he wrote the book, he would reject this principle, because of his doctrine of sense and reference: the sense of the words determine the sense of the sentence; and the reference of the words determine the reference of the sentence.

This is a great philosophical work, and I would suggest it to anyone who is starting to study Analytic philosophy (philosophy of mathematics, logic and language), and also those who want to consider the platonist proposal.
