    Product Description

The rich history of automobile manufacturing in Europe stems from the talents and labor of a great number of people—inventors, designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, executives, and others—who shaped the industry from its beginnings in the late 19th century to the present day. This biographical dictionary profiles some 600 of the most important figures, summarizing their lives and careers and recounting their specific contributions to the industry or to individual companies or models. It includes not only those whose names grace some of the world’s most famous marques, such as Carl Benz, Enzo Ferrari, Ferdinand Porsche, and André Citroën, but many who are little known today despite their accomplishments.

      Book Description

Many of the great ballplayers of the Negro League have been forgotten simply because baseball's Hall of Fame would not recognize black players until Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige made their way into the Hall of Fame. For this book, more than 50 former Negro League players and baseball historians were asked to vote for players who they believe should have been included in the Hall of Fame, and to select an All-Time Negro League All-Star Team. In addition to presenting and discussing their choices, the book profiles the lives and careers of the players selected. Appendices include rosters of the players and historians who voted.

        Book Description

This is the first of three volumes that chart the history of the science fiction magazine from the earliest days to the present. This first volume looks at the exuberant years of the pulp magazines. It traces the growth and development of the science fiction magazines from when Hugo Gernsback launched the very first, Amazing Stories, in 1926 through to the birth of the atomic age and the death of the pulps in the early 1950s. These were the days of the youth of science fiction, when it was brash, raw and exciting: the days of the first great space operas by Edward Elmer Smith and Edmond Hamilton, through the cosmic thought variants by Murray Leinster, Jack Williamson and others to the early 1940s when John W. Campbell at Astounding did his best to nurture the infant genre into adulthood. Under him such major names as Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, A. E. van Vogt and Theodore Sturgeon emerged who, along with other such new talents as Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke, helped create modern science fiction. For over forty years magazines were at the heart of science fiction and this book considers how the magazines, and their publishers, editors and authors influenced the growth and perception of this fascinating genre.

4 out of 5 stars Those Thrilling Days of Yesteryear.......2004-01-06

While this book had its rough spots, it was very interesting and fair.

Ashley looks at the history of science fiction magazines from the origin of magazines themselves to 1950. There is an awful lot of interesting information here on how magazines developed differently in Britain and the US.

When Ashley gets to the 1926-50 era, he is marvellous when covering the major magazines. He avoids overt deification or demonization and seems quite even-handed when dealing with the "Shaver hoax." Also, he does not take the route that when John W. Campbell became editor of Astounding all the other magazines ceased to be of interest.

This is essential reading for those interested in the early development of science fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Rice' Is A Very Good Teacher.......2004-07-09

I have taken classes from Rice' and every class has taught me something new and inspired me creatively. I'm an experienced editor and agree better proof reading was needed but her examples and information and her association with other artists included in the book are the most important reason for buying it. If her name is on a book, buy it. She has a new book coming out in October 2004 and I am anxious to buy it too.

5 out of 5 stars this book is worth TEN workshops.......2004-05-01

Overflowing with ideas and insider technique tips, Rice and friends present us with bountiful inspiration in this enthusiastic, well-illustrated book. It's not just a must-read but a must-OWN if you're involved with paper and fiber arts. The tip about silk screen ink (for art on fabric) saved me weeks of reinventing the wheel, and that's just one very small note in a book chock FULL of fabulous ideas and projects. Thank you, Rice!

5 out of 5 stars Stamp Artistry by Rockport Press.......2004-02-21

This book is delightfully full of creative uses of rubber stamps by talented artisans in many mediums. The author has explained every project in easy-to-understand terms. Projects are separated into sections, such as "for the home," which makes it easy to select a project, and each section has a well-written introduction by the author. I didn't find one project I didn't like or wouldn't want to reproduce. The photography is wonderful! Any little petty glitches, which you'll find in any book, are easily overlooked because of the innovative subject matter and the masterful photos. (Even the revered "Chicago Manual of Style" has typos!) If you want something a little different, this is the book I recommend. It's worth every penny I spent on it, and I look forward to more great books by the author!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Projects, Talented Artists, Poor Proofreading!!!!.......2004-01-01

This Instructional Project Book offers wonderful projects by today's renowned top artists in stamping, clay, collage, etc. However typographical errors distract from the step-by-step instructions.
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A effective training tool for Excel tutors.......2007-05-25

This particular series of instructional books (meaning the "QuickSteps" series) has always been one of my favorites -- they're concisely written in short paragraphs with decent descriptive pictures to help anyone learn just about any type of software application.

While I found this book to be fairly complete, I'd still only recommend it as a desk-side reference manual to use along with Microsoft tutorials themselves. While it is a cleverly written book that is not as cumbersome to use as other reference books on the market, it does not address all of the finer points of Excel.

All in all, it's a great reference book, and let's face it, sometimes it's just easier to review a chapter a few times to digest material rather than stare at a computer screen until you become cross-eyed.

All in all, I'd probably give this book a 4.5, but since that's not an option, I'll have to stick with 4 stars.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2005-06-21

I don't use Excel all the time. But when I do I don't have time to troubleshoot problems.

This hands-on, user friendly book has helped me conquer Excel. The text is readable and well organized. The visuals are clean and fully support the instructions.

I found that you can start from the beginning and teach yourself EXCEL with simple step by step instructions or you can flip straight to your topic of interest and further build your skills. This is a great tool for all levels of expertise.

5 out of 5 stars Review From A Psychology Student.......2005-05-17

I'm a soon-to-be-graduating Psychology student at the University of Washington and I am writing this review from the perspective of some one using excel in Social Sciences.

I found this book extremely suited to my needs...each step was very clear and precise and it was easy to find the chapter or section that was most applicable to what I was working on.

It covered all of the functions of Excel that I have used in my classes thus far. Although my intro. classes had a very brief introduction to the functions I needed, as I progressed into higher level classes and used more and more Excel I found that I needed additional specific instructions for my work. This book was very helpful in that way, and saved me the bother of forever emailing questions to my professor, as I had done before I received the book.

I actually used Excel the most to analyze the significance of data from an experiment that I had designed and to graph the results. This required quite a few steps and it was helpful to have a guide to look at as I went as opposed to trying to guess what came after the basic skills I had previously learned.

I also lent this book to a friend who works in American Ethnic Studies and used Excel to organize and make tables of data for her thesis. The American Ethnic Studies major has no background in science, so was in the position of having absolutely zero knowledge of Excel. However, with this book alone, she was able to complete the Excel portion of there thesis without any additional help.

From a student's point of view, this is a great resource if your field involves any use of Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Great quick reference.......2005-02-02

I am an infrequent Excel user, so I needed a good reference book that is well indexed. That's exactly what I got with Excel 2003 QuickSteps. It's easy to find what I need when I want it. It's very well illustrated and contains a lot of great tips. The author does an excellent job of explaining the material.

5 out of 5 stars Great for my users.......2004-09-09

I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.

This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.

Marty (the concept author for the Quick Steps series) and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that they have helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

            4 out of 5 stars 100 of the World's Greatest Mysteries.......2005-01-11

100 of the World's Greatest Mysteries is a good book for those who want to know trivia for Jeopardy or those who want some interesting, new dinner table conversation. E. Randall Floyd incorporates many of the world's mysteries, with some being more well-known than others, into one colorful book. Although some of the tales did not have lots of detail, most of the tales were pleasantly unusual and had enough details to keep me satiated. I especially liked the stories about the long-lost cities or empires. Once again, I wish that there was more concrete evidence for some of these tales. However, this book is not a bad collection and worth checking out in the library.

2 out of 5 stars Good Subject Matter, Poor Author.......2004-03-24

There are many interesting tales in this book. Few that have never been read before, but there is enough extra information included here to make them good for the second round. The editing is poor, with a few errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar here and there. The largest problem in this book, however is the attitude of the author. The reader can clearly tell what he is stating as fiction or myth, and what he presumes to be fact. He tells the story of the beginning of Earth (in his mind, the "Big Bang") as if he had been there. His annoying, persistent use of words like "negroid" and referring to Native Americans as "Indians" are both unprofessional and offensive. Over all, this pretentious bore should not be writing books on mysteries of the unknown, because he obviously thinks he knows everything.

            4 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable.......2001-07-16

I recently bought this book, and I can tell you...what a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! I would have given the title 5 stars if it had gone into greater depth on some of the subjects, but hey...it is 100 of the World's Greatest Mysteries, they've got a lot of ground to cover here. This is not an in depth exploration of life's deeper meanings. This IS a brief telling of great mysteries that skips, like a rock on still water, from subject to subject. Purely entertaining, light reading, and a truly enjoyable vacation for the mind. Enjoy...

            5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2000-11-03

I have always enjoyed reading about BigFoot, sea serpents, UFOs, ghosts and other so-called "mysteries." Some books are pure trash, but I found Mr. Floyd's book a thoroughly pleasurable experience. It's history and science and mythology and religion all rolled into one. It gets right to the point and does not stray, as do so many books that try to cover this material. The writing style is pure bliss--but packs a punch and leads the reader panting for more information. One thing about this book is that the author does not appear to draw preposterous conclusions; he leaves that up to the reader. Each one of these articles would make a nice book in its own right. Both of my teenagers have read this book and have recommended it to their friends. Just thought you'd like to know!

5 out of 5 stars excellent introduction to our mysterious world.......2000-11-01

I found this an excellent introduction to many of the world's greatest mysteries. Concise and well-written, this author refuses to go where so many "fringe" authors go. In other words, he presents the facts as a good journalist would, without drawing sensational conclusions. This is good reading, highly recommended for readers of all ages. For those readers wishing to learn more about the material, there is an excellent bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece. There is a reason this book is a classic........2003-02-26

Much like Wozencraft and Jacobs book (Principles of communication engineering... which blows away the best textboks of today by Sklar and Proakis), this book was written in traditional style. Gallager's masterpiece was written in the golden era prior to the unfortunate "new math" revolution which occured in the late 1970's. Today's "dumbed-down" textbooks (math books, engineering books, etc...) are often referred to as recipe books because they often have 4 - 6 revisions in just a few years. Todays books tell you how to build and design things such as good codes for certain applications, but they neglect to give you the very deep theoretical underpinnings upon which these things are based. How are students and future researchers supposed to become the next generation of designers of codes and such.... if they aren't actually taught the deep theory behind their design. Books today only teach you how to implement them.

Aside from the intense mathematical rigour devoted by Gallager to this textbook, which blows away Cover and Thomas' "Elements of Information Theory".... the primary difference between the two books is that the focus here is on channel code design, whereas Cover and Thomas focus more on source coding because that is their field of expertise. Even still, Gallagers treatment of the theoretical underpinnings of source coding is alot more rigorous. Cover only glances over the theory... and quite frankly, I think those guys are just terrible writers, but they do get more into the practical implementation as it pertains to more modern applications.

In summary, much like Wozencraft and Jacobs... there is a reason that this book never needed a second edition... because it's so rigorous, that 37 years later..... theres just no need for an update!!! Gallager would be better of just writing another book (which he has)...

                    5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2000-04-15

This is a definitive text written by quite possibly the greatest information theorist this country has produced, next to Claude Shannon. The author is personally responsible for some of the most central results in the field for the last forty years.

Gallager's book was the standard text in the field for much of the time it has been in print. In recent years, other textbooks, most notably the one by Cover and Thomas, have become more widely used in introductory classes in information theory. There may be several reasons for this. One may be the relative lack of motivating material in Gallager's text. The author assumes the reader is already convinced of the importance of the problems to be treated in the book. Cover's book, on the other hand, has greater appeal to the general scientist/engineer interested in the fascinating connections between information theory and various other areas of human inquiry. A second reason may be the relatively high level of intellectual rigor required of the reader. Gallager is a brilliant theorist, and his precision and meticulousness are apparent in the pages. The casual undergraduate or general reader may find some of the analysis intimidating and abstruse (although if he reads carefully, the reader always finds plenty of physical intuition to support theoretical arguments). A final reason is that some of the material (although certainly not the most important ones) in the book has become dated, and many exciting new developments in information theory, such as multi-user channels, simply never had a chance to make it in.

The above qualifications, however, should in no way obscure the greatness of the book. For anyone who is serious about information theory, this book is INDISPENSABLE. The relatively lack of breadth is more than made up for by the depth of the treatment. The precision that may intimidate an undergraduate is a godsend for a researcher frustrated with the sloppiness that occurs occasionally (or quite often) in other texts. And while the book may miss some new developments, its treatment of classic Shannon theory, particularly the noisy channel coding theorem, is unparalleled in its elegance and power. Moreover, the book is often the only recourse the researcher has when troubled with the subtleties of mind-numbing issues such as the continuous-time Gaussian channel. Finally, almost every one of the exercises in the book is a gem. There are any number of papers in information theory which cite Gallager's exercises as proofs!

The only true regret the reviewer has regarding the book is that Gallager has not written a new edition.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Material for information theory.......2000-03-29

This book on information theory, written in the classic Gallager style, clear, lucid and simple, is good material for a person who requires an introduction to Information theory. It requires a working knowledge of probability theory. Once this criterion is satisfied, this book is easy to understand, and is quite "informative" too!

There are many methods for attracting birds to a garden: How To Attract Birds To Your Garden by aviary gardening expert Derwent May covers all kinds of garden birds, their feeding needs and ranges, and discussions of the flowers, trees and shrubs which attract them. Add a chatty tone and explanations of why some methods are better than others and you have an easily-understood guide, spiced with illustrations by Peter Brown.
