Book Description
Duck through a gate and into a little alley in the center of the ancient Dutch city of Utrecht, and you will come to the tiniest grocery store youÂ've ever seenÂa grocery museum, actually. During renovations in 1974, a workman found a rusty tin can with some old papers under the shop floor.
It was reported that the tin can contained diaries kept by Elizabeth (Betsy) Boerhave, the shopÂ's owner, from 1874 until 1891. The Museum Board published the diaries, with considerable success. Now, almost thirty years later, Betsy BoerhaveÂ's Diary has been translated for the American reader.
The address of BetsyÂ's shop is Hoogt 6, Utrecht.
Literally, Hoogt means Âheight or Âhigh place.Â
For ease of reading, many names of people and streets in the diary have been translated into English, but it was thought that maintaining the Hoogt 6 address would make it easier to find BetsyÂ's little shop. No doubt, many readers visiting the Netherlands will want to see it, and while in Utrecht, they may want to visit other nearby locations such as the picturesque village of Breukelen, where BetsyÂ's Âlittle cheese farmer lived.

Autobiography of Steve Trout, former major league pitcher.
Customer Reviews:
Pitcher Trout hits a home run!.......2006-01-30
Steve Trout had a decent major league career. His father had a very good career. This is the story of both men, their careers and their lives together and apart.
Steve probably had more potential, but for many reasons he never quite reached the heights. This book succeeds where Steve's playing career didn't. Trout pushes himself to reflect on many moments and to reveal his thoughts then and now.
It is a happy story, although sometimes it shouldn't be. To understand that, you have to understand Trout. Steve Trout is a positive man. He is genuine, honest and fun-loving and so is his book.
This is a book for generations of baseball fans. It is a book for fathers and sons. It is a book for anyone who likes a good story.

Bboy = BREAK BOY.......2006-07-28
Bboy means Break Boy, a bboy is a breakdancer, not an MC or a DJ or Graffiti Technican or a BASKETBALL Player. You're not a bboy unless you throw down on the floor and dance, and your not a bboy unless you battle. There are 55 pages of the Bboy section, mostly written on Rap artists. Which is cool because they are a part of bboy history too, but they are rappers not bboys. Other than that, the rest of the book is great, I would recommend reading this book for the sake of good history. But for Bboy history, I would read a different one, or just buy the Freshest Kids DVD. I did buy the book mostly for a different view on HIpHOp History and that i was referred to read it.
All and all he is a good writer.

The book is jam-packed with hundreds of "how-to" tips to ensure that servers are set up correctly and they operate as efficiently as possible. Numerous time-saving techniques are also provided to help web server administrators save time and reduce aggravation.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-04-09
I read this book after taking the ACHDS because I was interested in setting up Apple Servers in different environments as well as taking the Mac OS X Server Essentials v10.4 Exam (9L0-507). It was one of the easiest reads I've had in a long time. I came from the Microsoft side of IT, and some of the material from that area is dry. This book was helpful, and I enjoyed the real life examples. I still use it on occasion as a guide, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to know about Mac OS 10.4 Server, and how to apply it in the field.
WHAT'S IN YOUR LITTLE BLACK BOOK? TIGER!!.......2007-02-20
Are you a user or system administrator that needs to get the most out of Mac networking with Tiger Server? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Charles Edge, has done an outstanding job of writing a cool book that will help you tap the unused potential of your server.
Edge, begins by describing the concepts and terminology of basic network communications. Then, the author takes a look at what requirements are needed to run Tiger Server. Next, the author covers the management utilities that are used in maintaining and working with Tiger server. He also covers the various services that the Tiger X Server can offer to administrators to help in managing networks. The author continues by covering the concepts required to build a good backup plan for any organization. Then, he provides an introduction to many of the command line utilities used in managing a Tiger Server and Mac network environment. Finally, the author explains the various other aspects of managing a long-term Tiger Server and the network the server lives on.
After reading this most excellent book, you should end up with the ability to find your way around an OSX Server. Perhaps more importantly, you'll enjoy the process.
Nice Mac Tiger Book.......2007-01-05
'Mac Tiger Server: Little Black Book' by Charles Edge is a nice text that will assist all Mac Tiger users in better understanding and using this piece of hardware and software. There are a lot of screenshots but that's never a bad thing in this reviewers opinion, as the more easily I can see how things are laid out, the better!! If I want lines and lines of black text on white paper I will get the Wall Street Journal, if I want a book that I can use and learn from, this is a great one to have on your desk!!
**** RECOMMENDED
Onyl scratches the surface..........2006-08-26
While there are some decent tips and explanations in this book, it seems more like a advertisement for the authors firm: whenever things get interesting the chapter ends and the recommendation points to hiring a firm to take care of your system administrative needs. I wanted a book that explains every single setting in the firewall administration panel for instance, what I get here is an instruction on how to close and open ports, which was very obvious in the first place. But maybe I should have looked at the title a little closer, after all it is the little black book, not the big one.
Best of all the Xserve books purchased!.......2006-06-23
I had purchased an Xserve to do audio and video file sharing across our network. I found that most other books (Mac OSX server Essentials and Essential Mac OSX Server Administration) tended to be parroting the help menu in the Xserve and really didn't advance my understanding. But with the Little Black Book I had the server up and sharing files the day the book arrived. This book has everything most people need to know without being unnecessarily complex. Many of the other books constantly referred to the terminal to do functions that are easier to do in the GUI. Unix isn't that incredibly difficult but if I don't have to go there, all the better. If you want to get an Xserver up and going fast, BUY THIS BOOK!
Book Description
From the best-selling author of Medjugorje: The Message comes his newest book, The Final Harvest. Wayne Weible, who began his career as a skeptical journalist, has introduced an entire generation to Medjugorje. In this new volume, he weighs the historical significance and religious impact of what is perhaps the greatest supernatural event of modern times.
For more than eighteen years, the Virgin Mary has allegedly been appearing daily in the remote mountain village of Medjugorje in Southern Bosnia. Her messages, responsible for the conversion and strengthened faith of untold millions, are focused on one objective: to bring the world back to God through his Son, Jesus Christ.
Wayne Weible details how these messages of reconciliation and forgiveness have borne fruit in this troubled Balkan country and throughout the entire worldand provides an intriguing sense of what is still to come.
Customer Reviews:
So many things get missed.......2006-06-14
It's very sad that fans of Medjugorje overlook, sometimes willfully, certain key facts of the matter. It is inexcusable when a priest does it.
For one thing, those who insist on following Medjugorje ignore the fact that canon law puts responsibility for deciding on the creditworthiness of reputed apparitions with the local ordinary--the bishop or archbishop in whose diocese the event is reported. That the Holy See does not involve itself with these matters and has no bureau, no agency with which to do so.
That the local ordinaries of Medjugorje have pronounced definitively that the reputed apparitions did not qualify for creditworthiness, that they do not establish themselves as being of the supernatural order. That there has never been any official declaration that has said one positive thing about the reports--that every single document has been entirely negative (read them again, Medjies! They couldn't be clearer.)
That the ordinaries have repeated this finding many times and forbidden people to come to Medjugorje on the pretext of these false reports.
That the content, as well as the nature, of these reports, and the conduct of the self-proclaimed visionaries, is very obviously inconsistent with the Catholic Faith and the whole history of creditworthy apparitions.
That if you convert to something that the Church has declared false you have not converted to the Church.
This is a sad business.
Nothing New.......2001-08-09
Wayne Weible is one of my favorite writers of Christian Inspiration, with his work on the apparitions of Medjugorje. He writes with an openness that is relatable and genuine. He demonstrates a sincere process of spiritual discernment in his first book: Medjugorje- The Message. His detailed account of his first encounter with the visions, and his ultimate belief in their authenticity left one with a strong sense of spiritual hope. Unfortunately, his new book, The Final Harvest: Medjugorje at the end of the Century, does little more than rehash information I've read and reread and reread countless times over the years in his and other works on the subject. Its presentation is dry and ends in a virtual desert. I've had it with his account of flights to various speaking engagements and his experiences thereof. This goes on and on and on. The best part of this book is a compilation of messages given by the Madonna as a reference at the end of the book, updating her messages to the end of the Century. This is handy to have, but is available easily anywhere. What people want to know when we by a book like this is What is next? Where is the world now in the grand scheme of things? What evidence is their that we should believe in... hope for...cling to? Weible can take a lesson from Michael H. Brown's approach to inspiring people to conversion through his writing on Medjugorje and other apparition sites throughout the world. Brown's The Final Hour, The Last Secret, and The Day Will Come are incredible! He ends his books with amazing insight and intense inspiration. He does not let you go until you feel loved and empowered. He sees to it that you are convinced of God's presence in the world, and that you are moved to action! People want their lives to change when they buy a book like this. They want someone to give them a reason to hope that they are not alone in the universe.
Read this book & read the bible.......2001-07-31
interesting book but with all religious works you must compare the contents to the only book inspired by God himself, the Bible. Yes buy this book from amazon and read it, it is put together nice but read the holy bible and buy that now from amazon as well. As a former catholic of 31 years i can tell you the way to heaven is through Jesus Christ NOT the virgin mary- this is not my opinion it is the word of God. You should purchase (from amazon of course) A vhs movie titled "messages from heaven" (eternal productions, copyrite 2000 / ISBN# 1-57341-119-1 which is an investigation into the catholic dogmas and messages from a spirit claiming to be mary as they compare to gods word. You will be shocked at the deception the catholic church has fallen for , totally disregarding the warnings in the bible. Check amazon first for the video, any problems email me for assistance.
A Reasonable View of A Sensational Topic.......2000-02-13
I was immensely satisfied with my purchase and highly recommend it to all who are interested or even just curious about the happenings at Medjugorje (pronounced Medu-gore-ia). The site is a little village in Croatia, the former Yugoslavia, and just happens to be where the Blessed Mother of God, the Virgin Mary, is appearing daily to selected visionaries. In a situation like that, the potential for hyperbole is mind-boggling. Demagoguery on either side of the question might be the order of the day. The wonderful thing about Wayne Weible is that he is not given to such extravagance, either in his data or in his presentation. His treatment of the miracles occuring in this unlikely spot is straightforward, factual, and supportive without being xenophobic.
Wayne Weible was a secular-minded journalist who wished to report on the happenings at Medjugorje in order to profit from them. He thought they would sell newspapers, which he owned. A Protestant by upbringing, virtually non-religious in practice, he wound up becoming a believer and eventually converted to Roman Catholicism.
In the process, he became the recognized chronicler of the happenings. He introduces you to the players involved, to the geography and cultural and political milieu of the place, to the history of the eighteen-year-long drama. You feel as if you'd visited Medjugorje yourself, to read this book.
I was fortunate enough to be taken to a conference at which one of the visionaries was speaking. I also saw other players in the cast there, including Wayne Weible. He impressed me so much, I had to buy his book. Another motivation was the fact that he made it clear that the people living in Medjugorje, including the visionaries, are having financial difficulty. The book purchase helps them as well as Wayne, who has dedicated his life to spreading the "good news".
The author captures the holiness of this event........1999-10-27
Wayne Weible is able to communicate the depth of the messages, the visionaries and the true meaning of these holy events. He is not preaching, just opening our eyes and hearts to the need to HEAR what is really being said. He is beyond superior. He is relating an event that will change our lives.

The Fear of Going Native.......2003-02-14
Here Frederick Turner advances a spiritual and religious thesis for the destruction of nature by Western civilization. What sets the West apart from almost everyone else in the world is a lack of connection with nature, which has lead to vast environmental destruction and the extermination of entire peoples. With great historical insight Turner traces this tendency way back to the very earliest cultures of the Near East such as Sumer and Mesopotamia, which were besieged by hostile nomads who resisted their attempts at the settled life. This influence continued into the Roman Empire which was constantly on the verge of collapse from barbarians at the gates, and Western culture developed an innate fear of unstructured and unknown nature. Meanwhile, as Christianity became the world's most bureaucratic religion, God was removed from the world and confined to the church, and stifling dogma prevented followers from attaining new revelations and awareness. In turn the outside natural world became the realm of Satan and had to be conquered and controlled. Turner extends these dire trends into the eras of exploration and expansion into the new world, with the stipulation that the inherent Western disconnection from nature led that culture to destroy it out of hatred and repressed desires.
This is a very strong thesis and Turner's research and insights are sound, especially for the time he wrote the book (1980), though he does tend to do a lot of stretching. An example is the implication that Westerners were so likely to slaughter other peoples because Christianity did not allow ritual sacrifices. Another problem is the inconsistent writing in this book, as Turner's distinct history and anthropology often drift into sentimentality and repetitive complaining about the West's evil deeds. Early in the book he condemns the doctrine of the "noble savage" as a patronizing effect of hypocritical Western culture (which it is), but in the final two chapters Turner is dangerously close to this attitude himself. Despite some inconsistencies, Turner has delivered a very insightful look into the culture that destroyed much of the natural world and the deep historical influences that prevented remorse and guilt, except in the subconscious of every nature-deprived Western person.
Book Description
This is a somewhat unconventional introduction to philosophy, with over 400 cartoons by the author designed to make teaching and learning more fun. Organized by individual theory, this lighthearted book can be used as a core text, or might supplement separate paperbacks or an anthology.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent textbook for introducing students to Philosophy.......2006-05-18
I am in the process of going to school to teach philosophy, and my eventual goal is to teach it to college freshmen. If this book is still in print when I reach this goal, I would give it serious consideration as my core text.
Far from being a detriment, the font choice and copious sprinkling of cartoons do an excellent job of 'cloaking' the good and deep idea content of the book. Attacking philosophy from the angle of the theories as 'visions of human nature' is novel and interesting, as opposed to the somewhat-scary-to-novices distinctions of epistemology, ontology, ethics, aesthetics, etc.
This book combined with text selections from the spotlighted thinkers would make for an engaging intro course. Highly recommended!
Nice Adult Beginners Book.......2002-12-25
If one is expecting a technically precise book which meets the needs of professionals or even undergraduates having to write that last minute term paper, then disappointment is at hand. If, however, you want a comfortable introduction to historically changing views of human nature as presented by Plato, Aristotle, The Buddha, Augustine, Descartes, Freud, and Sartre, this is a very worthwhile text.
Palmer does a nice job of presenting standard arguments for each of the thinkers discussed, frequently highlighting differences and always providing something of a cultural context.
This is a good book for someone who knows only a little about the subject or who knows perhaps a bit more than just a little but wants a quick enjoyable read as a review.
If you already know the 4 noble truths of the Buddha, the difference between Anselm and Descartes' versions of the Ontological Argument, Hume's attack on the foundations of knowledge, Kant's use of the apriori, and the implications of Sartre's Radical Freedom, then don't buy this book sight unseen.
For anyone else with a passing interest in philosophy, it's worth the money.
Very disappointed!.......2001-04-12
In all fairness, I am not actually rating the book, but I did want to warn others of the font used in his books. I just couldn't get past the lousy choice they made for the typeface so I returned it. This makes me very disappointed as I was really looking forward to reading the book. I had also ordered another of his books "Looking at Philosophy 3" and returned that one as well.
Book Description
All developed human beings possess a practical mastery of a vast range of concepts, including such basic structural notions as those of identity, truth, existence, material objects, mental states, space, and time; but a practical mastery does not entail theoretical understanding. It is that understanding which philosophy seeks to achieve. In this book one of the most distinguished of living philosophers, assuming no previous knowledge of the subject on the part of the reader, sets out to explain and illustrate a certain conception of the nature of analytical philosophy. Professor Strawson draws on his many years of teaching at Oxford University, during which he refined and developed what he regards as the most productive route to understanding the fundamental structure of human thinking. Among the distinctive features of his exposition are the displacement of an older, reductive conception of philosophical method (the ideal of 'analysing' complex ideas into simpler elements) in favour of elucidating the interconnections between the complex but irreducible notions which form the basic structure of our thinking; and the demonstration that the three traditionally distinguished departments of metaphysics (ontology), epistemology, and logic are but three aspects of one unified enquiry. He has produced an elegant work that will be invaluable to students and stimulating for professional philosophers and general readers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful, but Not Introductory.......2006-07-14
Sir Peter Strawson was one of the finest analytic philosophers of the twentieth century, and his "Analysis and Metaphyics: An Intoduction to Philosophy" is something of a summation of his extraordinary contribution during his illustrious career.
In his preface, Strawson states that this book is a general overview of philosophy as he understands it. He covers metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of language, and draws insightful connections between these subjects.
While he admits that this book is not elementary, he also insists that it does not presuppose any previous acquaintance with philosophy. However, I think that only the smartest upper-level undergraduates in philosophy will begin to understand it.
In my opinion, this book is too idiosyncratic and too difficult as an introduction to philosophy. The price (over $43, at the time of writing this review) is also very high for such a slim book.
Therefore, I do not recommend this book as an introduction to philosophy for those who have had no exposure to the subject. However, I think that some students who are interested in an overview of philosophy from an important perspective will gain very much from it.

Book Description
Questioning Matters is an accessible, provocative collection of readings organized around central topics that are solidly grounded in classical, foundational issues, but relevant to today’s world. Kolak’s compilation emphasizes philosophical reasoning processes and methods more than any other anthology. The focus is on learning to ask the right questions and to analyze and formulate arguments; an underlying theme is that philosophy is not merely a collection of views and theories, but an activity as relevant to the timeless issues of existence as the practical concerns of today.
Customer Reviews:
This book is not going to the right classes.......2001-02-27
This book has a good sample of different philosophical subjects but fails to explain any of the hard to understand topics. Intended for a intro class, it is better suited for an advanced philosophy class.
