Now that Martin Scorsese is releasing his long-planned biopic THE AVIATOR, the life oh Howard Hughes starring Leo di Caprio from TITANIC as Hughes, expect a new flood of interest in the mysterious relict and his weird ways, especially towards the end of his life. Expect parallel interest in CALL ME PAT, a title from about ten years ago newly re-issued to meet the boom in Hughes studies. Hyland was a Navy radioman and a brave sailor indeed, whose exploits in the service deserve even more expansion than they merit here. Funny how the patriotic among us get short shrift while the merely wealthy, like Hughes, garner all the attention. By the end of the 1950s, Hyland (charmingly called "Pat") had taken over the operations of Hughes Aircraft while his boss, HH, was battling it out on every front with his movie star wife, Jean Peters.

Until 1980 this remained Hyland's job, not only his vocation, but his avocation. Between him and Hughes a mysterious bond remained. Hughes had stepped away from the glamorous, Hepburn and Gardner and RKO life by the time Hyland became CEO oh Hughes Aircraft, and so this wonderful book will be a kind of sequel to the Scorsese effort, which insyead concentrates on the less dismal, exciting and earlier Hollywood years and features a cameo by Gwen Stefani of No Doubt as Jean Harlow, the tragic platinum blonde whom Hughes directed in HELLS ANGELS and sought to dominate elsewhere.

      Book Description

      DiMaggio. Berra. Lombardi. Piazza. They’re more than just baseball heroes, they’re the real-life fulfillment of the faith their countrymen had in coming to this land of opportunity. Now, in this fascinating, talent-filled collection, superb sportswriters, essayists, and baseball scholars celebrate the meaning and magnitude of the Italian contribution to this sport that America calls her own.

      From the hilarious story of Ping Bodie and the first Italians to play in the majors (written by Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times reporter Ira Berkow), to the touching tale of how his father was an amateur shortstop on tough New York City streets by Bob Leuci (Prince of the City) . . . from George Vecsey’s memories of Maglie’s Giants and Furillo’s Dodgers to Joseph Vecchione’s retrospective on West Coast Italian baseball mania . . . from inspired assessments of unforgettable figures like Joe DiMaggio by Wilfred Sheed to Lawrence Baldassaro’s moving tribute to the unfairly maligned Ernie Lombardi, Reaching for the Stars covers all the bases.

      The authoritative encyclopedia Total Baseball database provides complete stats for every Italian American major leaguer ever to play the game, and Yogi Berra selects his own Italian American All-Star Team. DiMaggio’s a definite, but is it Petrocelli or Rizzuto at short? Who starts, Raschi or Mussina? Who relieves, Antonelli or Righetti? And who’s behind the plate, Piazza, Yogi, or Lombardi? You’ll know when Yogi reveals his team.

      Brilliantly written and exhaustively researched, here’s the story of how a special group of Americans inspired a nation by excelling at a game—and how by aiming for the bleachers, they were really reaching for the stars.

          Book Description

          "This is simply the most significant analysis of contemporary Mexican cinema to date, and it will make an incalculably important contribution to the field.... Rashkin's incisive analyses and brilliant juxtaposition of cultural and socio-political determinants will become the new standard that other scholars will seek to emulate."

          —Ana M. López, Associate Professor of Film Studies and Communication, Tulane University

          Women filmmakers in Mexico were rare until the 1980s and 1990s, when women began to direct feature films in unprecedented numbers. Their films have won acclaim at home and abroad, and the filmmakers have become key figures in contemporary Mexican cinema. In this book, Elissa Rashkin documents how and why women filmmakers have achieved these successes, as she explores how the women's movement, film studies programs, governmental film policy, and the transformation of the intellectual sector since the 1960s have all affected women's filmmaking in Mexico.

          After a historical overview of Mexican women's filmmaking from the 1930s onward, Rashkin focuses on the work of five contemporary directors—Marisa Sistach, Busi Cortés, Guita Schyfter, María Novaro, and Dana Rotberg. Portraying the filmmakers as intellectuals participating in the public life of the nation, Rashkin examines how these directors have addressed questions of national identity through their films, replacing the patriarchal images and stereotypes of the classic Mexican cinema with feminist visions of a democratic and tolerant society.

          Fred Thompson (1873-1919) was a pioneering entrepreneur who encouraged Americans, especially American men, to have fun and stop feeling guilty about it. He designed and built Luna Park, which in 1903 transformed Coney Island from an area so tawdry it was known as "Sodom by the Sea" into a respectable venue for middle-class recreation. He created the Hippodrome, the world's largest theater when it opened in 1905, and filled it with lavish spectacles at affordable ticket prices. He moved on to become "the boy-wonder of Broadway producers," responsible for such popular hits as Brewster's Millions and Little Nemo. His financial acumen never equaled his showmanship (he lost control of both Luna Park and the Hippodrome to better businessmen), but he seems to have thoroughly enjoyed spending vast sums of money to make fantasy and luxury accessible to the masses. Woody Register, professor of American Studies at Sewanee, explores Thompson's life and career as a paradigm for the sea change in commercial culture that took place in the early years of the 20th century, when the Victorian emphasis on educational, elevating entertainment was challenged by a more hedonistic attitude that valued pleasure for its own sake. Gender theory and other currently trendy academic disciplines inform the author's point of view without detracting unduly from his well-written and well-paced narrative. Register could have eased up on the Peter Pan metaphors, but he convincingly links Thompson to present-day innovators who've made a bundle by refusing to grow up, such as director Steven Spielberg and the whiz kids who created the personal computer and Internet revolutions. This is a nice example of a scholarly work that reaches beyond its core audience to appeal to the general public. --Wendy Smith

          Book Description

          A generation before Walt Disney, Fred Thompson was the "boy-wonder" of American popular amusements. At the turn of the 20th century, Thompson's entrepreneurial drive made him into an entertainment mogul who helped to define the popular culture of his day. In this lively biography, Woody Register tells Thompson's remarkable story and examines the transformation of commerce and entertainment as American society moved into an era of mass marketing and large-scale corporate enterprise. Getting his start as a promoter of carnival shows at world's fairs, Thompson was one of the principal developers of Coney Island, where he created the majestic Luna Park. Register traces Thompson's career as he built the mammoth Hippodrome Theater in Manhattan, where he mounted many productions noted for their spectacular--and spectacularly costly--staging effects. Register shows how Thompson's fantasies appealed to the growing legions of Americans who found themselves in a world that seemed increasingly "businesslike" and profit oriented. He illustrates how Thompson aggressively marketed to adult consumers a world of make-believe and childlike play, carefully crafting his own public image as "the boy who never grew up." Colorful, well-written, and insightful, The Kid of Coney Island brings to life a kaleidoscopic era in New York history as well as one of its most striking characters.

          5 out of 5 stars Fred Thompson habitue of Coney Island Restaurants.......2001-10-20

          As a lifelong resident of Coney Island,and the author of a recently published memoir entitled Remembrance of a Restaurant,or a Decameron of Dining,I share the deserved enthusiasm of all reviews for this life of remarkable showman,Fred Thompson. Unlike other reviews, mine is more intimate. Fred Thompson was an habitue of the finest restaurants of the period like Ravenhall's,Villepique's,Beau Rivage,and my parents notable landmark restaurant called Villa Joe's.A Little Bit of Naples in Coney Island.It was razed by urban renewal(1915-1975)As a boy, I recall his frequent patronage ,especially when he gave me season passes to Luna Park ,and a pat on the head.He was as modest as his imagination was flamboyant. He often had dinner talking to my father about my father's Boston Terrier championsI remember him as being always abstracted,away in thought. Mr. Register has reminded us in this biography of the great originals of that period of singular will and imagination. If I still had the restaurant I would invite Mr. Register to a drink on the house to celebrate this triumphant book suitable for a great showman.

          5 out of 5 stars The Rise of the New Leisure Class.......2001-09-11

          Fred Thompson was the "kid" (he was in his early twenties when he built Luna Park in Coney Island) who first recognized that the American middle class in the early 20th century was ripe for amusement and fun, ready to embrace consumption, fun and leisure as a moral system. Here he is given his due as a great innovator (inventor of the theme park), and a great showman (Broadway producer of mega-extravaganzas). Woody Register's highly readable and extremely insightful book is not just about Fred Thompson (of which there is very little historical information other than press releases, scattered interviews and new stories about Thompson's endeavors and stunts), but is all about the break between the early industrial age (all about saving and putting aside wages for a rainy day, Victorian respectability, the patriarchal society and responsibility) and the dawning of the modern age of consumption (spending for the fun of it, disrepectable activities, the newly feminized office-based white collar man and irresponsiblity). Thompson was the first entreprenuer to sell the idea of childhood as a lifelong event sustained through the agency of the carnival, the theme park, the toy. His genius lay in combining the new conception of childhood as a time of "innocent joy" with the new era of comsumption for consumption's sake. A wild spender, he died penniless, still enthusiastic, still working on his next big project, a perfect exemplar of the new boy/man Peter Pan personality he was instrumental in creating. According to Mr. Register's Introduction, this work took him much longer to write than he expected it would. We are the beneficiaries of his extended and meticulous labors -- this book is sure to beome a classic cultural studies text.

          4 out of 5 stars From Side Show to Broadway.......2001-09-07

          The mysterious Fredrick Thompson left little biographical information in his wake, but Woody Register has taken the scant evidence and woven it into a revealing narritive of the man who made Coney Island famous. This book cchronicles an even more important story as well, the concepts of leisure and amusements in the 20th century. The theme park, theatrical spectacular, Vegas showroom and Broadway all own a debt to Fred Thompson's inner child. This book is a must for anyone serious about the business of fun.

                4 out of 5 stars Decent Resource for STs.......2004-01-08

                Either you love the Revised setting or you hated it and I'm really not interested in swaying anyones opinions one way or another. But I will say that I found quite a few useful resources for my games in this book, so its good enough for me. It starts off with a timeline of history from the Mage point of view, including the new plot devices in the Mage setting, such as the Avatar-Storm, the Technocracy's "victory" and the pogrom against the Crafts. It then goes on to explore the Crafts, giving some basic information on them and their fates. Most joined the Traditions, such as the Wu Lung allying with the Akashics, the Kopa Loei and Bata'a going with the Dreamspeakers and the Children of Knowledge being accepted into the Hermetics. Others, like the Hem-ka Sobk, had more mysterious fates. Full write ups for the surviving Crafts (the Ahl-i-Batin, Taftani, Sisters of Hippolyta and Knights Templar) are given. The book then closes out with two chapters, one on spirits and bygones, the other on Talismans, Fetishes, Charms, Familars and other Wonders. These are fairly detailed rules that were left out of the core rule book.

                In the end, I've found parts of the book useful. The material on the Crafts, especially the Ahl-i-Batin and Taftani, has been useful in my non-western games. The stuff on spirits and bygones is also pretty nifty, as are the various Wonders. But in the end, it really depends on how much (or little) you plan on using such material. There are other books out there (Book of Crafts, Lost Paths, Forged in Dragon's Fire, Infinite Tapestry, Bygone Bestiary, etc), or you could even use your imagination. So ultimately, just look over my review and think about whether or not it would be worth it before you buy this book.

                3 out of 5 stars A good supplement for Mage Revised.......2003-08-13

                The storyteller's companion is a compilation of all the material that got cut out of the Mage Revised sourcebook. It contains a timeline of mage history, a section on Umbrood, and how to make magical items. There is even a bonus section on disparate crafts and a handy storyteller screen. This book served to make Mage Revised feel more complete. I would recommend it simply for the quick reference screen and the section on how to make magical items.

                4 out of 5 stars Useful Rules and Information.......2002-04-29

                This book contains some lesser information, not of earth shattering importance, but still important. Mainly information on crafts.

                A key thing in this book is it goes over every type of wonder! I didn't even know of many of these things until I read this book and learned about them. It gives very good examples of how wonders are made, and even brings up the idea of giving them merits and flaws of their own.

                Besides the cover, this book is actually very good though some of the Wonder information deserved it's own book.

                5 out of 5 stars Its a companion.......2002-02-22

                Sure, you can do without them, bu you could surely use the help and the screen is cool and useful.

                4 out of 5 stars Even so........2001-06-20

                Even if you don't like the Revised edition of mage I would suggest it just for the rules on Wonder creation. This book gives come GREAT rules on creations. Plus! it comes with the handy dandy ST screen with lots of useful info on it. I would suggest this book to ANYBODY intrested in playing a mage or running a mage chronicle.

                Companies are looking for more and more business intelligence from their Web sites, both to improve their marketing efforts and determine ROI. This is a good thing. This is an exemplary "how-to" guide for Web Analytics. Extremely useful.

                5 out of 5 stars A rare one-size-fits-all book!.......2006-11-08

                Web Site Measurement Hacks is the best book in the Web Analytics field. The book explains introductory topics as well as the most advanced ones in a chronological natural way. Subjects like what is web analytics, how to choose a vendor, how the technology works, and how to implement a web analytics program in your company are covered extensively.

                Besides being well written and almost encompassing, it presents also the point of view of several of the Web Analytics' experts and vendors. Many of the Hacks are co-authored by big names, such as:

                * Bob Page (Yahoo!)
                * Bryan Eisenberg (Future Now)
                * Jim Sterne (Target Marketing!)
                * Jim Novo (Drilling Down Project)
                * Jim MacIntyre (Visual Sciences)
                * Jason Burby (ZAAZ)
                * Brett Hurt (Coremetrics)
                * Xavier Casanova (Fireclick)
                * Jeff Seacrist (WebTrends)
                * Akin Arikan (Sane Solutions)
                * Jay McCarthy (WebSideStory)
                * John Marshall (Clicktracks)
                * ... and many more!

                The index is very helpful and you find subjects very easily. The book is well organized and I refer back to it every time I have doubts. It works for me as a Web Analytics' Encyclopedia.

                4 out of 5 stars easy to read.......2006-09-19

                I think that the book is for differente people: programmers and marketers. But I found it quite interesting althought you have to select what hacks are appropriate for your job.

                3 out of 5 stars Overall OK, but a lot of typos, and repetition.......2006-09-08

                I personally disagree with the use of "Hacks" in the title - as less than 10% of the hacks in the book are truly hacks. In anycase, it's a decent book to learn about the technicalities of web "measurement" - but I found it really repeated itself a lot. Granted a lot of the KPIs are different for different types of sites - it could of been arranged better. It felt like I read the same thing 10 times, with only minor differences. (Could of been shown in a table maybe).

                The perl code could of been put all together under a section called "create your own analytics program" instead of breaking it up into parts.

                The index was incomplete - many abbreviations were not there. Towards the end of the book, the hack cross-references disappeared and abbreviations and other terms just popped up without explanation. This is where the incomplete index caused the most annoyance.

                There were a LOT of typos - every 20 pages, there was a typo. Frustrating.

                An appendix summarizing all the KPIs, terms, abbreviations, etc would of been of great use... as the index is incomplete, and there is no true table of contents - finding things with respect to "hack number" is tiresome.

                But at such a cheap price - worth the money.

                1 out of 5 stars This book is horribly biased !!.......2007-09-05

                I purchased this book as a "newly ordained" Civil War buff, but I'm incredibly disappointed with it's obvious Northern bias. For example, the author gives statistics on Northern information, but then claims that Southern statistics are unavailable, or missing, or, I suppose, lost to history, which is utter nonsense. The battles are mostly referred to by their Northern names (ex. Bull Run for Manassas), which as a Southerner (I was born in Va, moved back here in 2004, and was raised in Alabama) I find mildly offensive. Yes, I know that the North "won" the War, but I would have liked a more balanced description and explanation of things. Two thumbs WAY down. Yankee propaganda.

                5 out of 5 stars The Everything Civil War Book.......2006-03-18

                This is the greatest civil war paperback that I have ever read. It is printed in very readable type size and has some illustrations. The book is also nicely sized. It is an enormous treasure of civil war information. One can quickly read this book and it is so well chaptered, it can be referenced quickly for specific data. I highly recommend it.

                5 out of 5 stars Everything Series.......2005-08-10

                The Everything series is a great way to explore a subject in a condensed version. The Civil War and World War 2 editions are a fantastic source of information and an interesting read.

                While I own many Civil War books, I found this to be a fun read. It covers all the basics and goes over the key events in such a way as to keep the readers attention. Get recap for Civil War buffs

                5 out of 5 stars ~ A complete overview~.......2005-01-03

                I have always been interested in war history, mainly WWII and have read much on that subject but had never read anything on The Civil War. As of late I decided to read some books on the subject and this book was given to me for Christmas. This is a wonderful book in that it gives the reader a complete, precise fact filled overview of the war. It is easy to read and move through ( I finished it in 2 days) and lays the groundwork for the reader to move on to a deeper study of the subject with this as the foundation. Highly recommend!

                Book Description

                In 1964 an Urban League survey ranked Los Angeles as the most desirable city for African Americans to live in. In 1965 the city burst into flames during one of the worst race riots in the nation's history. How the city came to such a pass--embodying both the best and worst of what urban America offered black migrants from the South--is the story told for the first time in this history of modern black Los Angeles. A clear-eyed and compelling look at black struggles for equality in L.A.'s neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces from the Great Depression to our day, L.A. City Limits critically refocuses the ongoing debate about the origins of America's racial and urban crisis.
                Challenging previous analysts' near-exclusive focus on northern "rust-belt" cities devastated by de-industrialization, Josh Sides asserts that the cities to which black southerners migrated profoundly affected how they fared. He shows how L.A.'s diverse racial composition, dispersive geography, and dynamic postwar economy often created opportunities--and limits--quite different from those encountered by blacks in the urban North.

                5 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for every Californian.......2007-07-15

                This book is clear, well-written and very readable. For the first time, I understand the hope my parents must have had when they migrated to Los Angeles in 1957.

                Recently, I was speaking to 20-somethings about my mom's yearning to attend high school since here Louisiana hometown did not have a school for her. Slack-jawed, they marveled that someone still alive would have experienced these acts that they thought were in the distant past.

                This should be required reading for all Californians.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent text.......2004-04-30

                Well researched, written, accessible, and informative.
                Useful to anyone interested in LA history, African-American history, and urban studies. A good book for undergrads, too.

                5 out of 5 stars historical intelligence in social storytelling.......2004-04-29

                This is a great book. A special book. Here's why:

                Josh Sides has given Los Angeles the kind of racial history that Mike Davis brought to bear on our popular image of the city and the kind of countervailing narrative that Chester Himes might have appreciated. This book's detailed look at Los Angeles shows us how the city's racial texture has changed, but it is also concerned to challenge how lazy we have all become in habitually characterizing racial LA as a city that can be reduced to the Watts Riots, OJ, gang violence, and Rodney King. As Sides tells the story, Los Angeles presents with a genuinely American paradox. Its racial story is a narrative of strife and difficulty, but it is also one of success and hope that rivals any other city's in the United States.

                This book is perfectly readable, and it leaves you wondering how we can all think more carefully about what is actually happening in America, beneath easy stereotypes and lazy, stock media representations of race.

                      Book Description

                      Modern aerospace vehicles, such as the space shuttle, other launch vehicles, and long-range ballistic missiles, do not discriminate between atmospheric and space flight. Most texts on flight dynamics, however, make this artificial distinction and therefore do not simultaneously cover aircraft and spacecraft. Bridging this gap in the literature, Atmospheric and Space Flight Dynamics is a unified presentation, demonstrating that the two disciplines have actually evolved from the same set of physical principles.

                      Key features:

                      * Introduction to a broad range of modern topics in an accessible, yet mathematically rigorous presentation

                      * Many numerical examples and simulations utilizing MATLAB ® and Simulink ® fully integrated throughout the work

                      * Simulations presented—usually not found in books on the same topic—are both realistic and instructive

                      * Examples allow readers to easily build their own simulations for aircraft, missiles, launch vehicles, reentry vehicles, and spacecraft

                      * Software is used as an instructional, hands-on tool, moving away from the "cookbook" approach found in other works

                      * Supplementary material and MATLAB/Simulink code available at http://home.iitk.ac.in/~ashtew/index_files/page0009.htm

                      * Numerous illustrations and end-of-chapter exercises

                      4 out of 5 stars Bible of Flight Mechanics.......2007-03-20

                      yes it is like the bible, because it gives every information in such a way that you find your own way to learn.... it would be better and easy to read if the pages were bigger. that's it....

                      4 out of 5 stars Defacto aircraft dynamics book.......2002-09-03

                      The new edition by Etkin/Reid is probably suitable for undergraduate study and introductory flight mechanics but the 72 Etkin, edition is probably the most useful on the long run for graduate students and practising engineers as it is quite comprehensive. It is unfortunate that this edition is out of print and is quite difficult to procure. This book is even more useful with Steven & Lewis's, Aircraft Control and Simulation.

                      5 out of 5 stars If you want to know why it flies...........2000-07-12

                      Definitive stability and control textbook. WAY over the average aircraft homebuilder's head, but if you really want to know why it flys the way it does, you need to understand this stuff.
