Agricultural history threatens to be dull and tedious; hence this highly personal account of the adventures of the author from age 9 to 19 on a family farm in the Northeast. A series of vignettes describing chores and other farm work are interspersed with high humor, pranks and harsh physical effort.

The farm setting was the family home of aggricultural leader, economist and teacher, Howard E. Babcock, for years Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Ithaca's Cornell University. Introducing many new farm practices, he told readers of his popular page "Kernels, Screenings and Chaff," in the American Agriculturist magazine of new ways to manage grasslands, employ used auto tires to ease operation of farm equipment. He counseled them to buy open-formula farm feeds from the huge farm cooperative he organized and managed, The GLF (now Agway).

Babcock also introduced farmers and ultimately all consumers, to prepare and consume frozen farm produce and meats. Home freezers were one of the most important contributers to improved diet and life style not only of farmers, but all consumers.

Young John Babcock tells of shooting woodchucks and rats, tending livestock, and operating new farm machines that his dad started to promote in the midst of the Depression decade. After the 1933 Bank Holiday, loan rates fell to the lowest in many years.

Life was hard, but this farm family never missed a meal, nor the chance to enjoy life to its fullest in an era marked by sweeping change. I submit it as a high spirited and readable account.

Fun and informative.......2000-10-12

This is a book that is easy to read in its 2-column format and is very interesting. Of course, it was released in 1999 to coincide with Y2K, and it probably won't be a book around five years from now, but I thought the authors did an overall good job with the history. It's a manual that I will keep on my bookshelf to reference whenever I have questions about a group that is predicting the end. The art, cartoons, photos and other illustrations make this a very pleasant read, and they have a complete index at the end to help you reference specific groups or names.

This book is essentially a walkthrough. It is pretty effective in locating specific items and such. It does not have lists for weapons, armor, or enemies. I really cannot say much else.

This guide book provide most of my solutions to my quest. A 5 star book with detailed maps and clear infomation sails throughtout my game. Only one error on the unlited candle but overall is a triple plus.

Excellent found one mistake.......1999-01-11

On page 202, location number 10 for the unlit candle is wrong. The candle is located in the hallway next to this room. Otherwise a usefull guide.

If you need help with MOE, this is THE book for you........1998-12-24

This book contains everything you need to know for maximizing the playability of Mask of Eternity. Well worth the money!!

The Official Book of King's Quest VI covers games 1 through 6. I bought it for game 4 and found it incredibly helpful whenever I was stuck and couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do next. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs a bit of help to make it to the end of the game(s).

There are a billion ways you can go when you start up After Effects. It's wonderful to know that once I generate the ideas of what I want to do but don't know how to pull them off, all I have to do is find the tutorial for it and "Genius!" I've learned them and am able to modify them in any direction I want to go. Trish and Chris Meyer have a good handle on teaching, sometimes complex VFX maneuvers, in such easy to follow and understand terms. I highly recommend any of their books on this subject.

Este libro en especial tiene una serie de ejercicios que refuerzan lo basico y nos expican lo avanzado.
Si ya has comprado libros de ellos, puede que te parezcan repetitivos, pero no te dejes llevar por eso. hay ajustes pequeños que te hacen ver diferente el proceso.
Adobe After effects es un programa en crecimiento, por ello, no subestimes en la informacion de estos libros.

This is another excellent After Effects guide that deserves to be in the library of any AE professional. However I was a little dissapointed with the contents. Being titled: Advanced Techniques, I expected to learn a lot of new techniques, but found most of the content was already well known by myself. I also found quite a lot of content was repeated in the other two After Effects books by the Meyers.

This is still an excellent book to have as a reference, and there are some great topics covered. It's very well written like the other books, and I don't regret the purchase at all. My complaints are probably mostly due to the fact I have learnt quite a bit since finishing the first book, for people who have finished the first book and want to learn more this would be perfect. But advanced users should perhaps look at After Effects 7 Studio Techniques which has more advanced content.

This book only to find out it's for version 5.5... Not a cheap book, as I already have purchased it.

If you are a novice make sure you get Vol. 1 it is really great. I bought volume two because I learned so much from volume one and what a great AE reference book to have sitting on you shelf. Whenever I have a question the book has an example that I can apply to my project.

Finally a PRE-SOVIET Russian history book.......2000-09-17

I knew I had to pick buy this after I flipped through it at a book store. I have been half-heartedly searching for a couple years now for a book about Russian history that didn't focus on the 1917 revolution and the Cold War. Also, it's full of illustrations and sidebar articles that bring this subject to life. Just for interest reading, this book has been fascinating. From the Kievan Rus to the St. Petersburg czars, and all the interesting stuff in between like the Mongol invasions and Ivan the Terrible, is in here. It's a good light read, because it's not in lengthy novel form. It's my coffee table book.

Great Introduction to Cosmology.......2006-09-05

Author Dennis Overbye studied physics at MIT and for years has been Deputy Science Editor of the New York Times. He has been associated with science his entire career and his journalistic style stands apart from the usual writings of scientists. I have yet to find a scientist write something like, "photographic plates whose grains were hysterical for the light that had left some star or galaxy before the human race was born."

Overbye spent some five years attending PhD cosmology seminars and conducting recurrent weeks-long working interviews with world-class scientists. What results is a series of mini-biographical sketches of the important players while new technologies blew this exciting field wide open - and the never-ending fight for who would get credit.

For those interested only in the history, technical and scientific paragraphs are easy enough to skip, but the interspersed science is manageable under Overbye's direction. I learned the easy way - about ages of stars, anthropic principle, antimatter, background radiation, black holes, big bang theory, bottom-up theory of galaxy formation - just a few items selected from the "a's" and "b's" in the index.

Although the book was published in 1991, the science is still almost current. Recent publications suggest there have been no new significant findings in physics in the immediate past decade (although astronomy has been booming). This is a great read, and a valuable kick-start in my on-going efforts to understand particle physics and cosmology.

A History of Physical Cosmology.......2006-05-29

In Overbye's "Lonely Hearts" the reader will find a contemporary history of one of the most exciting fields of science in the 20th century. Told with a personal style that helps the reader understand that the both the scientists and the science exist in a very real sociological frame work, the narrative focuses on the developments in answering, "What is the Earth's place in the cosmos?" and "What is the fate of the universe?"

Overbye centers his story around the life of Allan Sandage, the sometimes hesitant successor to Hubble. In examining his life as well as the lives of numerous other astronomers and physicists he helps the reader see both the high and the lows of a life of pursuing knowledge in a scientific context. He also helps us understand the sometimes rough and tumble world of publication, scientific ego and underlying uncertainty found in such pursuits.

The only drawback is that the book's original edition was written so long ago. While the newer edition seeks to add more information about recent progress in the field, there is a lack of the exploration of the personalities that are doing the science. Additionally, even with the update, the book is once again somewhat behind the latest work in the field.

That having been said, I still strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in astronomy or physics as well as for anyone who is a student in the history of science. I would also recommend this book for students seeking to pursue a career in the sciences. The book does a wonderful job of showing what a person must do to be successful and what obstacles a person faces when following that path.

Wish I read in school..........2005-12-05

This is one of the best books on physics I have read. Not only doees the author Dennis Overbye present the information about the fascinating personalities in astrophysics, cosmology and astronomy, he will actually explain in laymen's terms some of the scientific formulas they were after and why. Wish I had this in school, would have helped me understand all those calculations a little better

What a swell book!.......2004-01-29

Okay, I KNOW I'm a little biased, being an astronogrl and all, but this book is an AMAZING read! It reads like a novel, and yet contains so many interesting astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology concepts, that it will blow you away. Covers everything from the big bang to inflation to black holes to string theory to dark matter... Dennis Overbye (the author) has hob-nobbed with so many big names and been able to glean personal interviews that you begin to feel like you know these people and their astronomy struggles. And don't worry; This book contains no equations. This book makes me excited to do astronomy and it is the best book I have read this year and will always remain one of my favorites.

Beautiful Mystery of the Universe.......2002-11-09

Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos is the greatest book every written about the search for ultimate answers about the universe. But the science is secondary to the gallery of scientists who are revealed in all their pettiness, persistence and ultimately greatness. The story of Allan Sandage - from boyhood dreamer to discoverer of mysteries - could be a book in itself. This is a book of almost poetic prose - a real page-turner that I couldn't set down. Get it today
