Book Description
Essential to re-creating an authentic 1940s look, this resource guide to period styles covers everything from short hairdos popular in the early 1940s to the late 1940s "cut to fit" look made popular by Christian Dior. Hundreds of vintage illustrations, photographs, and diagrams accompany detailed instructions and techniques for replicating the styles of the decade. Fun facts and trivia related to the hairstyles of the time are included, as is a look at "War Time" hair and regulations brought about by the government. Comprehensive lists of the beauty tools needed to create these hairdos, where to purchase the various hard-to-find items discussed, and hairstyles based on hair length and type are all included for those interested in revisiting the period beauty of the 1940s.

A must have..........2006-02-17
Thank you Daniela Turudich. I own three of her vintage living books fortunely, and everyone is overwhelmingly helpful. This book especially since I wear my hair like this frequently to go with my vintage apparal and lifestyle. Her attention to the little details are great. And every style does take practice and patience, so don't get too discouraged if your first few attempts don't work out too well. And definitely use her idea for the hair rat/ donuts to create the rolls. It works out wonderfully. Just cut them into to sections first.
Not a Rita Hayworth look-alike guide.......2005-09-18
This book is the only one of its kind and contains tons of information on recreating 1940s hairstyles. However, the focus is on your basic hairstyles sort of like what you see in the movie "A League of Their Own." There is also a lot of time spent on what I would call very unattractive, Grandma-Q-tip styles.
I hunted this book down and blew a wad of cash all in search of instructions for the perfect Rita Hayworth, Ava Gardner, Lana Turner hairstyle and I was very disappointed. The hairstyles of the three ladies mentioned above, which are the result of tedious pin-curl sets or pin-curl permanents, are barely touched upon in this book. You are told how to make a pin curl, a picture of Rita (which is not even the look that she is famous for) and a picture of Ava are shown and you are told it is a pin-curl set and that's about it. I found better information just by searching on pin-curls in Google for free, than I found after wasting my money on this tiny book. It is probably worth buying at the original price, or if you are interested in creating hairstyles from the 1940s that are not the glamourous Hollywood pin-curl styles.
Interesting, but not enough information.......2005-06-29
I read this book through about 3 times while having my hair done the other day. There are instructions on some of the hairstyles, but they are not nearly detailed enough for a layperson to follow. Fortunately, my hairdresser is pretty skilled in setting hair, so he will be able to replicate a couple of them for me. The pictures are beautiful, though; they give you lots of ideas. Overall, I kept looking through it and wanting to see more, more, more ideas!
Evoke Some of That 1940s Glamour........2005-04-07
In the 1940s, women's hairstyles evolved to become more practical for professional women, yet they conveyed glamour and sophistication that endures in movies of that period. Styles tended to be shorter in the War years and longer and looser in the late 1940s. "1940s Hairstyles" is a how-to guide to creating these lovely styles. There are tips and instructions for the original methods of styling the hair, as well as modern alternatives for many techniques. The instructions vary in degree of detail. They give as much detail as women got in the 1940s, as many of these instructions are taken from period publications. But those women were familiar with the basic techniques and accustomed to watching their hairdressers create these styles. Modern women will need to study the basics in Chapter 2 before moving on to the styles.
Chapter 1 provides instructions for "Basic Haircuts". 2 cuts for short hair are described and illustrated, 2 for medium-length hair, and 2 for long hair. You don't need a period haircut to create the styles in the book, but most styles do require a layered cut in order to make curls on the top and sides of your head. I've also noticed that, for someone with very thick hair like myself, there is simply too much hair for these styles if it's not layered.
Chapter 2, "The Basics", is the most important chapter. This is where you learn how to create the basic elements of 1940s hairstyles: pin curls, waves, hair parts, rolls, pompadours, and bangs. Pay particular attention to the section on pin curls. If 1940s hairstyles could be described with one term, it would be: pin curls. Chapter 3, "Selecting the Right Hairstyle", provides guidance in choosing a style based on the shape of your face and any imperfections you might want to camouflage.
Chapter 4 is "Basic Styles", divided into 2 parts: Casual Gal and Career Gal. There are some photographs of movie stars sporting some of the included styles. The instructions for each style include period illustrations and sometimes period instructions, presumably taken from old magazines. Some styles include diagrams of pin curl sets and some don't. Remember to pay attention to the direction of the curls in the diagram (clockwise or counterclockwise). "Casual Gal" includes styles for short, medium, and long hair and for women who wear glasses -about 18 styles total. "Career Girl" presents styles for short and medium-length hair, including those suitable for women who were in the military -about 15 styles total.
Chapter 5 is dedicated to "Formal and Up-Dos". Seven styles are pictured for various lengths of hair. Chapter 6 discusses styles that incorporate "Hair Accessories", such as braids and braided hair pieces, ribbons and bows, snoods and hairnets, scarves and turbans, and flowers.
There is a "Problem Solver Q+A" section at the end of the book, which includes answers to commonly asked questions and a little troubleshooting. Appendix A is a list of beauty supplies you will need, with descriptions. Appendix B, "Where to Find Beauty Supplies", gives general advice, not a list of suppliers. There is an index that lists page numbers according to what length of hair the styles are suited to.
Decent book, could be better........2004-09-09
Be very careful if you are going to CUT your hair in a vintage style using this book. I just tried it and am very disappointed. I had my hair cut using the "long-length" directions (the author cited Rita Hayworth and Lana Turner as examples). I own almost every Rita Hayworth movie and I know for a fact that her hair was never this short. It is NOT a long-length style. It is tooooo short. Now, I can no longer style my hair in any 40's rolls, so most of this book is now useless to me. Three inches of hair on the side is not enough to do anything...and it looks like a mullet.
My advice...copy the styles but NOT the cuts!

A Great Book!.......2002-06-19
I was very impressed with this first book from this author. The book is very cute but informative. Very well done.
...and then what?.......2000-08-16
I was so excited to finally find a book that is dedicated to 1940s hairstyles, but disapointed when I actually sat down to read it. Although the book is very cute with lots of illustrations and information for choosing an appropriate style for ones face shape, hair type, and so on, it doesn't go into enough detail on HOW to create the style or effect. This book is an entertaining and fun reference that helps stimulate ideas, but fails to assist in the realization of the 'do.
wigmaker speaks.......2000-06-12
this has a very helpful book, but i wish that the haircutting section had final pictures of the cuts. actually, i wish that the book had more "real" pictures than drawings. still, as a wigmaker, i tend to style a lot of 40s hairstyles, so i'm pretty happy with it
a great book.......2000-05-29
the book is a really good book if you are trying to look like in the 40's. many hairstyles to choose from...they are all great

Great Book.......2007-07-21
Excellent...It really help me to better understand the data analysis with many differents case scenarios...exercises...its for everyone.
Real Good for a textbook........2007-05-12
I had to use for a college class, but great speed in shipping.
Not bad, but not as good as expected.......2007-04-13
I am an intermediate to advanced Excel user, so my review may reflect that level. As others have said, it looks like MS rushed this book to the market, evidenced by so many errata, which can be disappointing especially when the solution is wrong. On the other hand, there are some very interesting and genuine uses of various Excel functions to solve business problems.
I wouldn't recommend this book for beginners. If you're trying to learn Excel, this is not the book. It is not a book to teach excel, but a book to teach you what you can do with Excel to solve everyday problems, given you're familiar with the mechanics of excel.
I would recommend it with these caveats. And getting Walkenbach's book on Excel functions along with this would be very helpful in my opinion. Best of luck in your endeavors.
Excellent.......2007-04-11
I have read many books in excel, but this book is really the most beneficial and excellent book I've used in my life. It is full with practical not theoritical examples. and you can benefit form it in your work.
Very practical, but full of errors.......2007-04-02
Overall, I like this book, even though it is somewhat confusing, both in scope and in the target audience.
The techniques of "naming the range" or writing the "if" formula are certainly targeted for beginners, but most of statistical tools are normally used by more advanced users.
The worst thing, though, is that the book is full of errors, both typos and mistakes in problem solutions on the disk. I consider myself an intermediate user, so finding an error in "instructor solution" was more like an additional challenge for me, but for the beginner this could be very frustrating.
On the positive side - I really liked the idea of problems in the end of each chapter; so many books just give you the theory and then you do not know how to solve a real life problem. For most of chapters, I knew the tools, but still had to spend time figuring out the best way to implement it for problem solving.
Very practical book, good for an intermediate users. Just be aware of the typos !

Book Description
In the world of historical painting, Don Troiani stands alone, universally acclaimed for the accuracy, drama, and sensitivity of his depictions of America's past. His Civil War paintings and limited edition prints hang in the finest collections in the country and are noted by collectors from around the world. Now, in Don Troiani's Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War, the artist turns his brush to one of the most colorful and captivating aspects of Civil War history: the individual units that earned their reputations on the battlefield and the distinctive uniforms they wore. In addition to 130 paintings of battle scenes and individual figures, the book also includes more than 250 full-color photographs of the uniforms the soldiers wore and the accouterments they carried. Supporting the illustrations is text by two of the leading military artifact experts. Taken together, it makes for one of the most comprehensive books on Civil War uniforms ever undertaken.
Customer Reviews:
Troiani's artwork puts you in the middle of the action.......2004-08-13
His stunning artwork has long been respected, but this work is an invaluable resource for reenactors and students of the period. Highly recommend!
This book is a terrific time-sink!.......2003-10-23
Because I'm a working historian with a strong interest in material culture and artifacts, combined with a tourist's interest in Civil War battlefields, I've long been a fan of Troiani's amazingly detailed, extremely accurate, almost photographic art. This gorgeous volume combines large-scale reproductions of 130 of his paintings with some 250 color photos of surviving uniforms and equipment from museums and collections around the country (including Troiani's own). After a couple hours of page-turning, I went back and spent much more time studying the depictions of units of special interest to me, such as the Washington Artillery of New Orleans and Terry's Texas Rangers. The variety in uniforms and insignia is staggering, especially compared to the "uniformity" of modern military uniforms. As usual, he includes extensive technical notes and specs, as well as an annotated guide to artifact collections. It's not a cheap book, but it's worth every penny.
Finest military artist ever........2003-06-29
Let me start off by saying that I am not a fan of the Civil War. I do not regulary buy books dealing with it. My primary interest is in the Napoleonic period and I have numerous books on this subject. My prime area of interest are Napoleonic uniforms. However, Don Troiani is such a fine and skillful artist that I have bought his books soley because the fine work he does in portraying the soldiers of the Civil War era. Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War is a supurb work showing the detail and grit of the average soldier in that horrific conflict. There are dozens of paintings or maybe better described as portraits of individual soldiers covering the numerous regiments that took part in the conflict including infantry, cavalry and artillery. Also included in this book are a number of reproductions of his battle paintings which are also the best military paintings I have ever seen. Over the past 20 years I have bought hundreds of history books but only 5 on the Civil War and four of them I bought were simply for the Don Troiani reproductions. He is in my opinion the greatest military artist. Seeing his work makes me jealous for Civil War buffs and I wish that Troiani would paint uniforms of the Napoleonic era. No Napoleonic artist comes close to the detail, accuracy and skill that Mr. Troiani displays in his work. If you are into uniforms or military art of any period then buy this book. You do not have to be a Civil War buff to enjoy the great artwok of Don Troiani.
Latest volume in the "Troiani Triology" is the best one yet........2003-01-06
If you enjoyed "Don Troiani's Civil War" and "Soldiers in America" you'll love the new "Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War." What becomes more clear with each book is the incredible amount of research that goes into Mr. Troiani's work.
This latest book is a perfect combination of text, photography and art.
Noted Civil War authorities Earl Coates and Michael McAfee provide the in depth research text that reads like a novel. The photos of uniforms, headgear, buttons, et al show the extensiveness of resources (most from his personal collection) available to Troiani. Based on these two pillars of knowledge, Troiani creates art of Civil War soldiers in uniform that is unparallelled in accuracy as well as anatomy and action.
A MUST for Civil War Buffs.......2002-12-09
Don Troiani has done it again. Fantastic book! Knowing the quality of Troiani's work, I'd had it pre-ordered for some time, and am thrilled to now have it in hand.
Many illustrations are of individual soldiers - allowing for a precise look at the uniform fit, colors and textures as well as how the accessories and accoutrements were worn. The book's illustrations are fantastic and it also has 250+ photographs of uniforms and equipment - many items are from the artist's personal, extensive collection. There is extensive coverage of Zouaves and Chasseurs.
If you've never seen a fully uniformed and armed soldier from the 3rd New Jersey Cavalry, 1st U.S. Hussars 1864-65, a quick purusal will explain why they were nicknamed The Butterflies.
After hearing Mr. Troiani speak in the summer of 2001 (and getting to briefly meet him), he has become my favorite Civil War artist by far. His soldiers are real - sometimes muddy, bloody and torn, and faces may have several days growth of beard, with their emotions and fatigue clearly visible. Hair and facial hair styles are accurate, as are body sizes and types, and all small details. Gaze deeply into one of his paintings, and soon you'll swear you can hear the noise of battle and feel the fear, confusion, determination and courage of the soldiers. Troiani takes you there.
The text, written by Earl Coates, Michael McAfee and Don Troiani, is accurate, concise and thoroughly expands one's understanding of the illustrations.
Extensive sources are given, as are recommendations for museums (and their websites) with extensive collections of Civil War uniforms. Don't let the price throw you, the book is well worth it.
Book Description
Schiller's 1795 essay on the educative function of art is one of the most important contributions to the history of ideas in modern times. This English-German parallel text edition includes a long analytical introduction and extensive notes.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent edition of an excellent work........2006-10-14
Writing in the 1790s, Schiller united the rigorous epistemology of Kant and Fichte with Plato's dynamic account of the development of the soul to produce one of the most beautiful works of philosophy in the European tradition. The Letters on Aesthetic Education offer an interpretation of the development of the individual and the parallel development of Western civilization. These interpretations focus on the conditions that allow for mental health in a human individual and society, and especially demonstrate (as the title indicates) the crucial role of artistic experience in healthy human development. This is a great work, and a great introduction to the other German philosophers of the 19th Century (Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, et al). This edition is very good: the translation is good, and it has a facing German text. Highly recommended.
Book Description
When Peter Larson and his team from the Black Hills Institute discovered the world's largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton beneath a South Dakota butte in 1990, they had no idea that it would be the find of a lifetime. Sue, as the skeleton came to be known, would ultimately not only lead them to international recognition, but also pull them into a world of FBI investigations, Native American land claims, competitive paleontologists, and avaricious museum curators. This gripping story chronicles the adventures of Larson and his group, explaining the art, technology, and politics behind one of the most successful group of T-rex hunters.
Customer Reviews:
fantabulous!.......2006-08-08
Yes, I'm biased. Despite my connection with the authors, I truly promise a fine read. It took me a little over one year to finally finish the book because of my emotional connection. It's really tough to relive some of the most difficult moments of my life. I guess you did your job--reader pathos. Awesomely done, Dad & Krissy!
Two great stories in one book.......2006-03-09
This book is fabulous. A great introduction to the art and science of paleontology which is easy to follow and reads very warmly. It also tells the maddening story of a justice system gone absolutely berzerk. It is a fascinating example of how a handful of horrible judges, attorneys, agents, and other ne'er-do-wells can ruin lives. It really makes you shake you head in disbelief that this could have possibly happened in OUR country only a few years ago.
All Rex no Sex.......2004-09-22
"Rex Appeal" is the amazing story of one of the most significant fossil discoveries in the last fifty years. The story of "Sue" the fossil Tyrannosaurus Rex discovered by Peter Larson's associate Susan Hendrickson spins a web of intrigue from the moment the dinosaur's bones are discovered. With splashy headlines and national press coverage "Sue" becomes the darling of science, then the bane of Larson.
The landowner from whom the fossil was "bought" cries foul. Maurice Williams who is one eighth Lakota Sioux had put his land in trust with the United States Government. When Williams realizes the fossil may be worth many multiples of the $5000 he was paid for its excavation, the United States Government gets involved and when that happens it makes an IRS audit look like a toddler's birthday party.
The problem for Larson is that he is not strictly a scientist, but has established a for-profit organization called the Black Hills Institute. Not to say that Larson has nothing to contribute scientifically to the study of dinosaurs. His science is outstanding by current standards. But, the government suspects that Larson has nefarious intentions and pursues him with the fury of, well, of a pissed off T.Rex.
"Sue" is seized by the FBI and the South Dakota National Guard and the ensuing legal battle is extremely one-sided, according to Larson of course. He is confronted with an over-zealous prosecutor and a biased judge. Without hearing the other side of the story it's impossible to pass judgement on the veracity of the case against Larson. But it is safe to say that the judge in the case certainly defied all logic when he declared "Sue" real estate. 65 million year old bones hardly qualify as real estate, especially if the landowner was paid a handsome sum for their retrieval.
In the end Larson winds up in prison for nearly two years, his marriage to co-author Kristin Donnan dissolves, and his Institute is nearly bankrupt. Somehow Larson manages to emerge at the other end of the tunnel a changed man. He still pursues fossils with vigor after learning what many who have gone before him could have told him, "you can't fight City Hall".
The only criticism of the book is the complete lack of any intimations about Larson's relationship with co-author and ex-wife Kristin Donnan. Donnan is a free-lance writer who covers the "Sue" story and eventually falls in love with, and marries Larson. There is nothing in the book about their affairs. Whether that is intentional or not it would have at least contributed something to the story and clarified some of the events.
In all the book is highly recommended. Larson's theories about T.Rex and other issues related to dinosaurs are well thought out and informative. This book is a must for all us amateur paleontologists who can't get off our couches to go out west to do a little digging ourselves.
educational book on all fronts...........2003-11-29
I found reading Rex Appeal to be highly entertaining and informative book. I learned quite a bit about the people who dig dinosaurs and about the T-Rex itself. The author's legal problems smack with pure malice by the justice department. I wondered why such a thing was allowed to go as far as it did. Highly readable book, it revealed the world of paleontology and its rewards and risks. I wonder if Judge Battey can look in his mirror and see a honest man?
T-REX will always be the big boy on the block!.......2002-11-27
This is not just another dinosaur book. It is not just another dinosaur book with some fascinating facts about T-rex. This is THE book about T-rex by one of the foremost authorities on this bad boy of the Cretaceous.
Peter Larson's intimate knowledge of this beast comes from excruciatingly hard-earned experience. While it is a recounting of the nightmare saga surrounding the Sue specimen, it is also a manifest of the current thinking regarding T-rex, its lifestyle, and place in prehistory. Despite his own grievous experiences with the legal system, there is no self-pity in Mr. Larson's book. He simply states the facts as he knows them to be, as any researcher worth his salt should.
An A+ all the way.
