Book Description
The Terministic Screen: Rhetorical Perspectives on Film examines the importance of rhetoric in the study of film and film theory. Rhetorical approaches to film studies have been widely practiced, but rarely discussed until now. Taking on such issues as Hollywood blacklisting, fascistic aesthetics, and postmodern dialogics, editor David Blakesley presents fifteen critical essays that examine rhetoric’s role in such popular films as The Fifth Element, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Usual Suspects, Deliverance, The English Patient, Pulp Fiction, The Music Man, Copycat, Hoop Dreams and A Time to Kill.
This unique volume is about seeing and interpreting, about visual rhetoric and making meaning, about film as a symbolic form of expression. The essayists convey an approach to film as a set of well-grounded theoretical perspectives including psychoanalytic, semiotic, hermeneutic, phenomenological, and cultural discourses. Aided by sixteen illustrations, these insightful essays consider films rhetorically, as ways of seeing and not seeing, as acts that dramatize how people use language and images to tell stories and foster identification. Collectively, these essays examine society through a rhetorical lens, inviting the readers to judge for themselves the significant role rhetoric plays in the arena of film.
Contributors include David Blakesley, Alan Nadel, Ann Chisholm, Martin J. Medhurst, Byron Hawk, Ekaterina V. Haskins, James Roberts, Thomas W. Benson, Philip L. Simpson, Davis W. Houck, Caroline J.S. Picart, Friedemann Weidauer, Bruce Krajewski, Harriet Malinowitz, Granetta L. Richardson, and Kelly Ritter.

I'm running a game right now where the character wants to go to Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy. This book told me what I needed to know about the academy, and also gave me some other stuff I wanted (such as new force powers).
Great book leaves some info out otherwise Really Good.......1998-08-26
Book leaves some information that you would like to know out but otherwise gives good information about ships used and the Jedi Knights trained in the book's.

In the Java universe, the interface layer of the ubiquitous model-view-controller (MVC) software design paradigm is handled by either servlets of JavaServer Pages (JSP). The second edition of Core Servlets and JavaServer Pages, like its predecessor, documents these handy technologies fully and practically. Far more than a straight API reference, this book presents examples--complete with code and a listing or screen shot showing results--wherever possible. It's a fantastic strategy for communicating to programmers what they need to do in order to achieve the effects and behaviors they desire. What's new in the second edition? Lots, in terms of its eponymous software development environments: The book covers servlets 2.4 and JSP 2.0. The examples are more refined, too, and more attention is paid to supporting technologies like Web and database servers.
The didactic approach of authors Marty Hall and Larry Brown is recipe-like. They typically begin with a statement of a problem to be solved, then discuss relevant aspects of the servlet or JSP API. A series of code listings follows, and screen shots showing results bring up the rear. The net effect is that it's easy to spot relevant sections in the table of contents, it's clear how implementation works (thanks to the extensive listings) and there's no doubt about what the results are supposed to be. More elaborate examples show how servlets and JSP work in shopping cart, auction, and other applications. This is a significant and worthwhile update to an important Java book. --David Wall
Topics covered: Java servlets 2.4, JavaServer Pages (JSP) 2.0 (including the new expression language), HTML forms, JDBC database connectivity, and the details of how servlets and JSP are implemented in Apache Tomcat, Caucho Resin, and Macromedia JRun.
Customer Reviews:
Great Servlet Programming guide.......2007-03-12
If you're learning web servlet programming this is a great book. I've found it hard to put down. The examples are great and the explanations are too.
Mediocre Book.......2007-02-01
I bought this book based on reviews of others, and found it to be a disappointment. The coverage is mediocre at best, and a lot of the techniques that the author uses are outdated -- probably just carried forward from earlier editions of this book.
The thing that bothers me most of all is that throughout this book, the author keeps referring the reader to Volume 2 for coverage of the more advanced topics. Unfortunately, Volume 2 has been delayed for over a year, and may not ever be released. Had I known Volume 2 wasn't coming out soon, I would have gone with a different author for learning servlets and JSP.
Great Read.......2006-04-24
Not a book for beginning programmers, however if you have minimal java experience and are proficient in other languages you will be able to figure it out.
This book is an excellent read but has little reference value because it has no index. It is very informative if you are looking for something that explains the in's and out's and why's of .jsp and servlets, but if you are looking for lessons and sample code, you will have better luck looking for it online. But then again if you have experience, you can figure out the code yourself -not that difficult.
P.S. There is a wealth of hints and code at java.sun.com That site coupled with this book was enough to get me on my way.
What you need to know about JSP and Servlet Programming........2006-02-23
This book presents a great introduction into the world of server side programming. Hall is an excellent writer and is considered to be the go-to man for JSP and Servlet development. This book is valuable to anyone interested in J2EE development.
Very good for the beginer to startup and can not get vol 2........2006-01-07
It is a very good for a beginner like me to catch all the basic knowlege in this area as fast as I could, without digging into the the advanced topic at the very begining. With the help of the book, I felt very exciting to be able to setup my own tomcat server and web.xml and develop and deploy my own JSP and servelt in MVC pattern without any help from other IDE like WSAD. The only pity I have that is that the book left all the advanced topics to vol 2, but I have feeling that the vol 2 will never be published. I did send a email to the author about the release date of the vol 2 but did not get response. I could not wait for vol 2, and I have to trun to other good book to fill up the gaps in my knowlege.
Book Description
On a spring day in 1774, in western Massachusetts' Berkshire County, Pamela Dwight and Theodore Sedgwick were married. Theodore--destined to become one of the Federalist party's leaders in the U.S. Congress in the 1790s and later an influential judge on Massachusetts' highest court--was almost twenty-eight, and three years a widower. Pamela, not quite twenty-one, was marrying Theodore Sedgwick over the clearly stated objections of her widowed mother. In the course of her thirty-three-year marriage to Theodore, Pamela gave birth to ten children, seven of whom--four sons and three daughters--survived to adulthood. All but one of them would marry. The courtships, engagements, and marriages of the sons and daughters of Theodore and Pamela are the subject of this book.
Kenslea's richly researched account of Sedgwicks in and out of love comprises three parts. In Part 1, he examines Theodore and Pamela's marriage, characterized by Theodore's long absences and Pamela's depression and mental illness. He also looks at the courtships and marriages of their three oldest children, Eliza, Frances, and Theodore. These complex sets of relationships illuminate, among other things, the changing perceptions of the parental role in matchmaking, the vulnerability of wives abused by husbands, and the tenuous financial situation of widows in the early republic.
In Part 2, Kenslea turns to the Boston-based courtships of Harry and Robert Sedgwick, when the brothers courted "the friendlies," a group of young women who taught them some important lessons, including the difficulties of navigating the subtle rules of social etiquette among the Boston elite. Harry met his future wife Jane among the friendlies. At the end of 1816, the two began a seven-month engagement, during which they were separated but kept up a voluminous correspondence. Part 3 highlights this correspondence, which shows a young couple envisioning for themselves a relationship of equals, despite the legal and cultural impediments of the day.
Kenslea's epilogue considers Catharine Maria Sedgwick, the youngest sister and the best-known member of this generation of Sedgwicks. Catharine's reflections on her single state, both published and private, enrich this history of the married Sedgwicks by offering an early nineteenth-century alternative to the marriage plot.
Customer Reviews:
An fascinating tale.......2006-01-04
Inspired by a treasure trove of letters in a Boston archive, Kenslea has created an absorbing account of the lives and loves of an early American family. I was especially moved by the story of Harry Sedgwick and Jane Minot, whose passionate letters still have the power to stir the emotions nearly two centuries after they were written. Kenslea's careful scholarship and emotional acuity help him make the most of this wonderful material, and his writing is perceptive and graceful. Highly recommended, not only for American history buffs but for anyone who likes a good family tale.

Book Description
Chinese St. Louis offers the first empirical study of a Midwestern Chinese American community from its nineteenth-century origins to the present. As in many cities, Chinese newcomers were soon segregated in an enclave; in St. Louis the enclave was called "Hop Alley." Huping Ling shows how, over time, the community grew and dispersed until it was no longer marked by physical boundaries. She argues that the St. Louis experience departs from the standard models of Chinese settlement in urban areas, which are based on studies of coastal cities. Developing the concept of a cultural community, Ling shows how Chinese Americans in St. Louis have formed and maintained cultural institutions and organizations for social and political purposes throughout the city, which serve as the community's infrastructure. Thus the history of Chinese Americans in St. Louis more closely parallels that of other urban ethnic groups and offers new insight into the range of adaptation and assimilation experience in the United States.
Customer Reviews:
A local Chinese-American Review.......2006-03-13
This book honors the struggle of St Louis Chinese in the past 150 years for the hardship, struggle, discrimination and harassment, whether in the laundry or restaurant busines. However, the past 25 years, the old Hop Alley Chinatown image being long gone, there arises a group of Chinese-Americans in the main stream as lawyers, doctors, professors, engineers, architects, accountants, bankers, entrepreneurs, insurance agents, real estate agents, librarians and TV reporters in the cultural Chinatown. There were two Community Service Commissioners appointed by Governor Holden since 2001. Prof. Ling did a fine job in bringing forth this wonderful book even with a section on cemetry Chinatown of Vahalla. She shows Chinese-Americans contributing in society culturally, politically, economically and religiously, make St Louis our home.
Interesting read with much historical and depth interviews.......2005-10-26
For those interested in the immigration of Chinese to America should definitely take a look at this book. It gives much information on situations that many Chinese immigrants faced. The depth interviews give an interesting perspective about immigrating to a new country. It is good to be able to know about the Chinese immigration experience from those that went through it. I liked the focus of the book just on the Chinese of St. Louis. You learn a lot more intimate details when targeting a specific group in a specific area rather than a Chinese immigrants in general.
The book even mentions the development of certain areas of downtown including the building of Busch Stadium.
A Very In Depth Book With A Lot of Insight.......2005-10-16
The author, Huping Ling, did a really good job with her research and her analysis of the growth of the Chinese Cultural Community in St. Louis. The book is very well written and sheds a lot of insight in the evolving role of Chinese Americans in the U.S., both from a social and political standpoint. For anyone seeking more knowledge or is curious about how Chinese Americans have adapted their culture and way of life in America, I would recommend this book
Customer Reviews:
It is crazy to love China in midwest small town.......2001-11-05
A heartfelt touching memoir of growing up chinese in an all white community during the McCarthy years of the 1950's. Ching , the heroine wants to be one hundred percent all white American girl and go to the senior prom. No invites from white boys; enter
Bingo Tang, son of St. Paul ganglord who fills her imagination with returning to China. She will lose face if she doesn't marry
mother's choice, a rich restaurant owner from Chicago. What she decides may surprise the reader. Good for giving teenagers a look
at being "non" white in a small midwest town.
Great book on growing up as a Chinese American in the USA.......1999-11-29
Good reading for anyone interested in learning about the Chinese American experience growing up in the USA. It gives you insight and a perspective from a minority viewpoint as well as a child living in the society of the majority. It is written from both the heart and the mind with much verisimilitude. I highly recommend it!

Book Description
"Sherri Gebert Fuller provides us with a rare look at Chinese immigrant lives and aspirations in Minnesota, proudly reclaiming their voices as part of our great American heritage. I was delighted to read this book."--Iris Chang, author of The Chinese in America
Minnesota's first Chinese settlers, fleeing racial violence in California, established scores of businesses after they arrived in the late 1870s. Newspapers eagerly published reports of their activities, including New Year's festivities, marriages, and restaurant and laundry openings. Beginning in 1882 federal laws banning Chinese immigration and denying citizenship put particular pressure on the community. Sherri Gebert Fuller relates the story of the Chinese from these early days to the 1960s when a new wave of immigrants, including students, businessmen, and professionals from China and Taiwan, began to bring new energy and issues to the community and a flourishing of ties between Minnesota and China.

To Study For Middle School Science Praxis.......2007-01-17
I used this book to study for my Praxis that was last Saturday. Actually a couple of the questions from the book were exactly on the test. Also a good 70 percent of the material was similar questions! Great bargain for this book compared to the other expensive ones!
Good review for middle level science Praxis Exam.......2006-08-08
I used this book to review for the Praxis middle school science exam. I haven't gotten my scores yet, but it covered most of the topics on the test. A lot of the information, and even some of the questions, showed up on the Praxis exam. The book prepared me pretty well but it didn't go into much detail. It pretty much skims all the important areas though and I would definitely recommend it.
