This Legend Deserves Better.......2005-03-15

As a teenager at Busch Stadium I thrilled to watch Roger Maris play right field during two Cardinal championship seasons. In "Still A Legend" I was introduced to the man wearing number "9". In this work, Harvey Rosenfeld does a good job at projecting the whole Roger Maris. Comparable emphasis is given to Maris the baseball player, Maris the family man, Maris the son of Fargo and Maris the faithful Catholic.

Roger Maris grew up an Fargo, North Dakota where he attended Catholic schools and met his wife, Pat, while developing into a great baseball star. After the minor leagues, Roger continued his march to stardom as a Cleveland Indian and a Kansas City Athletic. Even in Cleveland he was regarded as a surly loner.

After his playing time in his adopted home of Kansas City, Roger was ready for the Yankee pinstripes but not for the glare of the New York press. Although he changed teams, Roger retained a privacy which would forever bar the press from his world and would limit his enjoyment of public adulation. The press would demonize Roger in his pursuit of Babe Ruth's record, while manufacturing the legend of a feud between himself and his roommate, Mickey Mantle.

Throughout the ups and downs of his stormy and injury plagued career, Roger retained his love of baseball which was damped only during the most severe of the onslaughts by fans and media.

This book wears its themes on its sleeve. The main themes are that Roger was not properly appreciated, his purported surliness was merely a justified demand for privacy and that he has been unjustly denied admission into the Hall Of Fame.

Although written by an obvious fan, this book does not do justice to Roger Maris. Too often the story degenerates into a litany of quotes from Roger, his teammates, friends and detractors to be classified as good writing. The sections dealing with the media bias and the injustice of his exclusion from the Hall Of Fame run on too long. This book is more editorial than biography. Still, this book tells much about Roger Maris. It also tells us much about ourselves, the fans. Yankee fans booed the Roger Maris whom they regarded a surly usurper. By contrast, Cardinal fans loved Jolly Roger. This is in keeping with our reputation as the greatest fans in baseball. The story of how the Cardinals restored Roger's enjoyment of the game and delayed his retirement for two years confirm the stories I remember from the time. It is too bad that Roger did not become a Cardinal in 1960. He could have been as big as Mark McGwire.

She just...didn't get it........2002-03-26

I read this as a Madonna fan--not a rabid, love-everything-she-is fan, but an fairly discerning, admiring fan. And all I have to say is this: if you don't really get Madonna, and want one woman's opinion on her impact, this book might be alright for you. But if you have any opinion on her at all, or are any kind of fan, this lady (the author) is probably going to get under your skin. I found myself cringing continually at what she said about Madonna's body of work. She obviously hadn't understood what Madonna was trying to do with many of the career moves she made, an understanding that I think is pretty easy to reach if you read the interviews, watch/listen to the work and take the public reaction into account. She overanalyzed the simple moves and brushed over the motives and purposes behind the most important ones, and this drove me crazy. By the end of the book I felt that I was no better or worse for reading it, though I felt a little inclined to do my own Madonna commentary, the right way this time--by disagreeing with her, I formed some of my own opinions more fully, but to be honest, this book does not take any huge stands to disagree with. The author just simply doesn't get Madonna. Perhaps she'd do a better study of Cher or Barbara Streisand.

I thought this book would have been much better if the author had approached it as a sort of long, personal essay about Madonna's effect on her life. I would have been able to accept that. But an in-depth study of Madonna...she simply isn't qualified.

On a more complimentary note, the title and cover art are wonderful.

What kind of fan are you?.......2000-07-11

Ok, i bought this book because it was the only title available at the bookstore. I find that this book is for one certain type of fan. If you want to look at Madonna on a global, cultural scale, this book is for you. It's purpose, in my opinion, is to situate Madonna, explain her and compare her to others. But it seems like there is soooo much talk about other people, there's no Madonna. The author throws in her name here and there, but, if you're like me, it won't be enough. If you're the kind of fan that wants to read about Madonna, and no one else, you just want info on her, this book isn't for you. Let's be honest- all we want to know about is Madonna. I don't care about other actors or singers or 1950's radio. Get to Madonna!

As a Madonna fan with a feminist identity (I'm a member of an organization of Women's Studies), I have read so many books and articles about her. What has confused me is that most of the authors have "objectified" the artist. But Karlene Faith does not. I'm curious about what Faith thinks of Madonna's "Ray of Light" era, and of her own recent explanation about her works in the early 1990s. Anyway, BAWDY & SOUL is an interesting, recommendable book. Even if you are not a scholar of so-called "Madonna Studies", I think you can enjoy it. When it is translated into my mother tongue, I think I would tell my friends to read it.

I first purchased Mr. Bourie's annual book many years ago, andlook forward to each new and expanded edition of his work. He tellsyou practically everything you need to know about casino gaming, then describes the basic offerings of every casino in the country, and then provides coupons that will save you hundreds of dollars when you visit many of the casinos listed. JavaScript is great, but at best it is a complementary language for Web development. JavaScript for the World Wide Web offers a productive, how-to style that lets you solve a problem or pick up a trick and then move on with the rest of your work.

This is useful as a reference book or to learn JavaScript. I do not use it often, but when I need it I am very glad to have it on my shelf. Good examples.

Not very good explanations.......2006-10-29

The authors are not very good at explaining things, even relatively simple things such as the prompt() method or the dot syntax. It could be much clearer and they could do it with fewer words. The authors take a rambling tone that doesn't quite give you the information you need. You can't depend on the authors to give you meaningful explanations. You have to experiment and try different things.
It's possible to learn JavaScript with this book, but it will take much more time than is necessary. In five editions, why couldn't they have improved this book? What are they doing? Other Visual Quickstart Guides are the same way. I hope the Visual Quickstart Guides go out of business and some other company takes over the market share. They've been cavalier toward their customers and don't deserve to be in business much longer.
Other books like JavaScript: The Definitive Guide by Flanagan, and JavaScript: The Complete Reference by Powell and Schneider are better at explaining the language even though they are considered to be more advanced books.
The same authors have published JavaScript & AJAX for the Web, which has almost the exact same content only it has a couple of AJAX chapters thrown in. Check out the review by another customer (at this point it is the only review). His critique is very similar to this one.
On the positive side, the authors manage to get most of the information across and the content is relevant for the majority of users.
If you choose to buy this book, use it as more of a guide and do not depend on it. Purchase other books to supplement it.

Believe it or not, this book is an acutal textbook for a course I am taking in college. I was hoping for a book better than this for a college course.

I have used QuickStart books for a number of years to get into/get started with new technology and software, and they have consistantly impressed. This book keeps up the tradition. I highly recommend it. A great resource for anyone getting into, or improving their knowledge of JavaScript. Go buy it, you won't be sorry.

Great "How To" and "WHY".......2006-03-02

I am one of the most impatient programmers on the face of the earth. In fact, I have been in professional services for years because it takes to long to realize results with traditional programming. Web development has sucked me back into the fray, and I enjoy the immediacy of the langugages involved. Code it -- look at it! Works perfectly for me! However, I am now a senior analyst, and nothing in my job description calls for these skills.

As the new director of technology (website guru) for my professional association, I found myself at a loss. I know HTML, and a smattering of java, but knew nothing about PHP, CSS, real JAVA programming or MySQL, which are the basis for our group's website. I took over in January of 2006, with a major symposium scheduled for March 2006. Everything and it's grandmother needed to be released on that site, which had been neglected over the past year (the old DOT was sent to Iraq!). In short order, I needed to know it all and do it all. This same review will be used for the Java and PHP/MySQL books. THESE BOOKS ARE A LIFESAVER! From building forms in HTML (I had never had to do this before), to creating style sheets, to writing java code to manipulating the MySQL database with PHP files, I have found the instructions so clear and easy to use that when I am in a hurry, I can just do stuff. Later, I can go back to the book to understand what I did, how it was actually done, and why it was successfully. When I really take my time, the tutorials are invaluable.

Obviously, I recommend this book. Novices will be led gently by the hand; the more experienced will find better ways of doiing things, and the impatient can get it done quickly. Excellent deal.

This book contains short biographies of 8 important explorers who "discovered" the Americas. These are ideal for the teacher who wants to know more than the textbook. This is also an excellent resource to use in class for students to learn more about the explorers. Students could use this resource in order to create "baseball" cards about the explorers. Or simply to use for students who want to know more about the explorers they learn about in class. The map inside the front cover is one that every student should have in his or her Social Studies notebook.

As someone who barely made it through thermodynamics at the U getting a title of mechanical engineer, I'm glad of reading this wonderful book. It puts you in a special perspective about how this property relates to our earth and our living world.

be prepared to take a grand tour. Temperature is a property of mater and as suchm reveals what is happing to an active systems such as the earth. Science is all about connections; at least to me, thats where the beauty comes in. To be able to connect atmospheric events, form geology, to living systems, wisdom resides on how you can weave the threads that are loose

A fascinating and lucid book!.......2006-04-09

For me this was an excellent book and recommend it to everyone interested in always learning new things. Segre's easy way of explaining tough matters is admirable. In this book you learn lots of stuff, like the average internal temperature of humans, earth temperature, what is absolute zero and quantum dynamics, all of them sauced with lots of history.

A Journey From the Discovery of Aspirin to Hydrothermal Vents.......2006-02-16

An entertaining read about the discovery and history of temperature. Along with the usual suspects like Galileo, Copernicus, Newton and others, you are also introduced to many other somewhat less heralded scientific figures that have made great contributions to science. Some of the more interesting sections of the book were, the discovery of aspirin, invention of the thermometer, hydrothermal vents, to temperature shift extinctions. Overall, a very quick read with lasting anecdotal impressions. Why read this book? To quote Steven Weinberg "The effort to understand the universe is one of the very few things that lifts human life above the level of farce, and gives it some of the grace of tragedy". This book opens new insights into and of the world we live in.

Science for the curious.......2006-01-05

This book is a fantastic read for any of us who has gone through their science courses in school and wondered if there is more to science than the cut and dry information they got from their BORING(!!!!)textbooks.

Who would have ever thought that such a prestigious family of physicists who can pride themselves of a Nobel prize trace back to a enterprising grand-father who built a paper mill on top of Roman temple in Italy?

Science is indeed a human story.

I read this book after reading John Gribbin's "Deep Simplicity" and "Ice Age". If I hadn't read Gribbin's books I would not have been able to put some of Segre's political bias into context, and filter the good information from the scientific facts. Gribbin writes in a much clearer style and without the blantant political overtones.
