Jack Welch was a late adopter of almost every major management trend in the last 25 years, yet he got better results from using these ideas than most other companies did. His secret is revealed in this good overview of the Welch years: He spent 90% of his time communicating with people about what they must do in order to take advantage of these ideas. Most people spend almost no time on this critical area. You should think of this book as a great primer then on corporate communications.

      Book Description

On September 1st, 2002, a lifelong fan began publishing a daily account of the Giants' pennant race, unaware that the team's unlikely success would soon transform a simple writing exercise into a true journalistic and personal drama that would last through Game Seven of the World Series. Whether he's cheering in person at the ballpark or catching the score on a hidden radio at a wedding, the author uses humor to relate his anxiety, superstition, and faith.

Witty, insightful, and ultimately poignant, A Classic Fall shows how one man experienced two months that no Giants fan will ever forget.

5 out of 5 stars I could feel the suspense.......2003-07-24

Rich Ryall has done a marvelous job recounting the experience of a true baseball fan through a Season, Penant Race, and World Series. I could feel the anxieties, the frustrations, and the elations that such a fan experiences, but more importantly, Ryall has the ability to make every reader understand a fan's love of the game. He has a charming and intelligent wit that all will enjoy, baseball fan or not.

5 out of 5 stars A book for any baseball fan!.......2003-07-23

A Classic Fall is a great read for any fan of baseball. Well written, very funny, and you will see shades of yourself in many of the moments Rich describes in his book as he follows the Giants pennant race and post-season journey of the 2002 season.

      I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Book for Baseball Fans Everywhere.......2003-07-09

It is obvious that the author of A Classic Fall, Rich Ryall, is a true baseball fan. What began as a running series of weekly articles on the SF Giants and their trials and tribulations, posted on his website, evolved into a lyrical tribute to his team. The ups and downs, laughter and occasional pathos of the Giants, as they found their stride and made their way through the playoffs and World Series. Rich's observations capture the atmosphere of the ballpark; the excitement of the pennant race and Series. Whether you are a Giants fan in particular, or a baseball fan in general, A Classic Fall is certainly a moving and wonderful tribute to the Great American Game. A 5-Star Read, without question!!!

(Although I'm the keeper of the only site on the net about the You Don't Know Jack games, this is a completely unbiased review.)

The book is hilarious! It really does enable you and a group of friends to play the game without a cumbersome computer. Dis or Dats, Gibberish Questions, and Jack Attacks are all here. It also contains some of the best questions from the games compressed into short, quick games.

All in all, a great party game or temporary roof shingle depending on your needs at the time.

Considering that the history of the Internet is perhaps better documented internally than any other technological construct, it is remarkable how shadowy its origins have been to most people, including die-hard Net-denizens!

At last, Hafner and Lyon have written a well-researched story of the origins of the Internet substantiated by extensive interviews with its creators who delve into many interesting details such as the controversy surrounding the adoption of our now beloved "@" sign as the separator of usernames and machine addresses. Essential reading for anyone interested in the past -- and the future -- of the Net specifically, and telecommunications generally.

              Book Description

Where Wizards Stay Up Late is the exciting story of the pioneers responsible for creating the most talked about, most influential, and most far-reaching communications breakthrough since the invention of the telephone.

In the 1960's, when computers where regarded as mere giant calculators, J.C.R. Licklider at MIT saw them as the ultimate communications devices. With Defense Department funds, he and a band of visionary computer whizzes began work on a nationwide, interlocking network of computers. Taking readers behind the scenes, Where Wizards Stay Up Late captures the hard work, genius, and happy accidents of their daring, stunningly successful venture.

5 out of 5 stars Great history of the Arpanet!.......2007-08-29

Had a lot of fun reading this book; highly recommended.

We all use the Internet; let's learn how it all started.

              5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!.......2007-08-18

I wanted to learn where the Internet/internet came from and associated technologies/standards, etc. This book is superb!

I read this concurrently with the nerds 2.0.1 videos and it was nice to put faces to names though the book does have some photos. The last 3 or 4 chapters in particular really sum up the formation of the internet as the first several chapters are really only about ARPA and the ARPAnet; which inspires everything that is to come.

Overall, this is one of the most complete and easily read books I have come across. The reader who only elected to rate this book 1-star certainly isn't in to computers/Internet or too young to appreciate the history of how their cell phone works, their email works, or why their friends can upload comments for his MySpace page.

If you want to get a whirlwind education in why we are where we are with the Information/Internet revolution then this is the book to read.

3 out of 5 stars A good look into the past.......2007-07-28

Where Wizards Stay Up Late is a good look at the politics, and background that have become the Internet we use today. Contrary to popular belief, Al Gore did not start the Internet. In fact, the book uses the word 'internetting' to refer to an international work group designed to help computers all over the world connect to each other in the mid-late 1970s.
The book goes in depth and covers all of the interesting bits that concern the creation of the ARPANET.

5 out of 5 stars Those who can't learn from the history are doomed to repeat it.......2007-03-01

The book is good view on the origins of the Internet and in particularly it gives insights into the hardship of working with guilded way of protectionism done by the Telecommunication entities. It shows how the Internet has always been tried to bind into the semantics of Telephones and Telecommunications and how this has always spelled disaster to the further development.

              3 out of 5 stars A Competent Account.......2006-10-23

Where Wizards Stay Up Late is a competent, if slightly dry, account of the development of the ARPANET. I live for this kind of stuff, but Hafner fails to ever really engage me in the story - I found that I was plowing through the text as opposed to devouring it. As a history text, though, I was impressed with the even-handed, no-hype account.

Too regularly do authors of computer history suffer from hero-worship and "religious" dogma - their personal opinions coloring the story, till its credibility is at best strained (if not broken). Hafner does not fall into this trap - if she worships anyone or holds any personal religious leanings, none of it shows in the account. The writing is clear and technical without being unreadable by a layperson. Overall, there is a lot to recommend this book.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, I found the story to be dry and frequently bogged down. Hafner may actually have overdone the evenhandedness of the account - I felt little passion for the subject, and consequently was not drawn into the text. At the end, I felt more knowledgable about the subject, but not any more interested. A good historical account, but a less-than-enjoyable read.

                Book Description

The Ancient Near East embraces the borders of Iran and Afghanistan in the east to the Levant and Anatolia, and from the Black Sea in the north to Egypt in the south. The Ancient Near East dispels many of the misapprehensions which have surrounded the study of the region. In this well-illustrated volume, Amelie Kuhrt offers a comprehensive survey of the history of the Near East from the earliest written documents to Alexander the Great's Conquest, and provides up-to-date narrative which takes into account the latest archaeological and textual discoveries.

3 out of 5 stars Not a book for everyone.......2002-04-15

This comprehensive, 2-volume book about the Ancient Near East clearly has some outstanding points in its favor, but sadly also several serious drawbacks.

On the upside, there is not too much more you would want to know about the history of Anatolia or Mesopotamia in the timeframe covered, unless you are upper division college student in history or archeology. The book gives a painstaking account of all major sources, has an outstanding bibliography, and the author certainly went to great lengths to portray pro's and con's of various interpretations to points of contentions regarding the interpretation of historic evidence in general, and in particular while discussing specific sites, possible historical outlines of a region etc.
Be advised though, that the coverage of areas like Egypt, Eastern Iran or Afghanistan, to name a few, is by far not as substantial as that of the other two.

If, on the other hand, you are not a student in aforementioned subjects, or at least a very interested layperson with a previous solid foundation in the science, and simply want an overview of the regional history, this is not your book.

Among several things that will be unsatisfying for you are her endless enumeration of sources (incredibly boring, unless you actually have access to those), a constant jumping from region to region, which makes sense on the one hand, but is not exactly enhancing the readability for the casual reader.

Another very unsatisfying aspect, and maybe even one of the worst parts of the book, while having the general reader in mind at this point, but also to some extend to the more informed reader, are the maps. While there are quite a number of them, their quality is, to put it mildly, pitiful. Many don't name the real points of interest (as for example it would be nice to have the maps actually show the sites she discusses in the text that refers to them), they never show any regional boundaries, as to make clear for example where, when, who was in charge of what territory. Also don't hope for anything like a timeline, or other features that will help the lay reader to follow more easily the course of her presentation.

To sum it up, a book with good use for the serious student of the subject, while only of limited, if any, interest for the layperson.

If you have any further questions regarding this review or the subject in general, feel free to contact me.

                3 out of 5 stars A good overview but a boring read.......2002-04-06

This work is a basic overview of the Near East spanning the massive time frame between 3000BC to 330BC. The book touches on all major points of interest in the time period. However, it contains many things which will bog down the average reader. For example, it contains lengthy descriptions of what must be almost every pot fragment found in Anatolia. For those of you who don't care about every student's notepad found in Sumeria, you can obviously skip these parts. Still it tends to decrease the readability of the text as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars Great teaching resource.......1999-09-09

Kuhrt's 2-volume work is an excellent source for teachers of ancient Near Eastern and/or world history. I have used it extensively for teaching the Near Eastern part of my course in ancient world history at Brigham Young University. Kuhrt gives good background information to paint the larger picture of the Near East and gives very helpful and insightful detail on specific periods of rule. He also includes important information on historical sources on the Near East and discusses their strengths and weaknesses. The maps, and the tables of dynasties, etc., are also very helpful. For those interested specifically in the ancient Israelites, Kuhrt gives a well-informed and substantially-detailed overview. But don't only read the Israelite section! A full reading gives the broader picture needed to see the full context of Israelite developments. I would recommend these books for upper-division (and where appropriate graduate) college/university courses and, perhaps, for advanced high school history courses.

5 out of 5 stars Latvians in Michigan.......2006-03-25

Latvians in Michigan is a wonderful book full of factual and personal glimpses of the Latvian families who came to America in the late 1940s when the Communists took over their homeland. The history is facinating and the personal journeys many of our Latvian neighbors and friends made were captivating reading. I have a new understanding and reverence for their customs, intelligence, the many gifts they bring to our communities and their commitment to preserving their country's traditions. There are many recipes for Latvian food and I loved the personal accounts told by those who attended and sent their children to the Latvian camp at Long Lake, Three Rivers, Michigan. I highly recommend this book for its readability, history and humanity. Bravo, Dr. Meija! Janet Howell-Obert

                  Book Description

Science fiction fans and technology buffs will treasure this guide to the sci-fi ideas that have influenced and inspired scientific advances in the real world. Many of the most fascinating ideas in science originated not in the laboratory but in the minds of such science fiction writers as Arthur C. Clarke and Ray Bradbury. The former's 1945 article on communications satellites was the original idea behind modern satellites; the latter's Martian Chronicles has been attributed as the main inspiration behind NASA's many missions to Mars. From bionics to black holes and warp factors to worm holes, this is the quintessential guide to the many links between science fiction and science reality.
