Book Description

How many so-called “road warriors”, the traveling foot soldiers of today’s global economy, are out there right now in an airport lounge, or alone in a hotel room with nothing but a notebook computer? Jakarta Journal is the spontaneous diary of one of them.

5 out of 5 stars Reflections from the Road.......2002-05-19

If you've ever been on the road, alone, away from home and your family -- on assignment, selling, taking classes -- then you will be moved by Abraham's reflections on two tough but intense weeks in Jakarta.
The book is made up of a series of e-mail messages home. By sharing these messages, Abraham lets the rest of us get a glance of a world we do not know (and a new way of looking at a world many know all to well).
I recommend this as a personal read or as a gift for someone who travels for their job or has someone they love who does.

5 out of 5 stars "Shoeless" Joe Jackson Belongs in the Hall of Fame.......2004-02-13

Donald Gropman is the leading historian on the life of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. In his revised edition of the book, Gropman gives an objetive look at the life of Joe Jackson, including the scandal that ended his career. Gropman's argument leaves little doubt that this legend belongs in the baseball hall of fame. Quite simply, the hall of fame is incomplete without him.

The other members of the Black Sox sought to add Jackson to the fix. Jackson never committed. Jackson even went so far as to tell Sox owner Charles Comiskey and attempted to sit out the World Series to demonstrate his innocence. These actions which would have exonerated him were rejected. Comiskey just felt Jackson was hearing rumors. When the scandal hit full force, Comiskey tried to save his players. Unfortunately, Comiskey's lawyer was only interested in saving Comiskey, not the players. The great tragedy is that Comiskey, depite his Richard Nixon-like tactics, is in the hall of fame while "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is not.

Gropman lays out a tremendous amount of evidence that supports Jackson's innocence. Despite this mountain of evidence and growing support for Joe Jackson's reinstatement, baseball's commissioners have largely ignored the case for Joe Jackson.

This book sets the standard for "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's life as well as the case for his reinstatement into baseball and his induction into the hall of fame. With the additions of transcripts, letters, and other pieces of evidence, this book is more than worth its price. Gropman also provides information for joining the Shoeless Joe Jackson Society and fighting to clear his name. I would encourage you to join.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography.......2003-05-26

Mnay biographies focus on human interest rather than factual information. This is not one of those. This book is meticulously researched and presents all the facts Mr. Gropman came across. The reader can make his or her own conclusion based on the facts the author presents, but the facts will probably lead the reader to conclude that Joe Jackson was not involved in the Black Sox scandal that nearly ruined baseball.

Mr. Gropman clearly demonstrates what many authors are unable to do: the ability to present an opinion based on fact, rather than speculation. I was impressed with this book because it provided me with much information on Joe Jackson's life, particularly on whether he was or wasn't involved in the scandal. The facts lead to the conclusion, not the other way around, and I like that. Baseball fans interested in the history of the game should read this book. They will enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Shoeless Joe should be in the Hall.......2000-07-27

I loved this book! Joe Jackson should be in the hall of fame! After reading this book and all the insights to his life, I have become a huge fan of Shoeless Joe. This book will tell you all about his involment with the "Black Sox". Like how he tried to tell Comiskey about the scandle before the 1919 series. And, how he also tried to give the money to Comiskey before the news hit the papers. If you want to know about one of the best players you need to read this book. By the way it was a life time band from baseball....his life ended in December 1951.

5 out of 5 stars easy and pleasant reading about the great shoeless joe........1999-07-17

The book sheds tremendous light on shoeless joe jackson and his era. the book gives deeper insight into the black sox scandal of 1919.Jack M. Purvin,M.D.

4 out of 5 stars Must-read for those wanting Jackson in the Hall of Fame!.......1997-07-28

Gropman states early on that he intends to provethat Jackson had no involvement in the Black Soxscandal of 1919 and succeeds. He demonstrates the hows and whys of Jackson's "involvement" and shows why Jackson took money when he didn't participate in the fix. Though Gropman goes out of his way to glorify Jackson in some instances, for the most part this is highly readable, well-researched bio of "Shoeless Joe" and demonstrates once and for all that Jackson belongs in the Hall of Fame.

    Book Description

The experience of going to the movies, be it a single screen theater, twin, multiplex or drive-in, is affected by many different factors that have shifted over the years. Just as movies emerged from silent to talking, black and white to color, there has invariably been change in the way movies are made, copied, distributed and viewed. This change in the moviegoing experience, for better or for worse, is worth studying.

This work examines the American moviegoing experience from 1968 to 2001—the way in which movies are made and regulated (including the demise of the Production Code and the emergence of the ratings system) as well as changes in lighting, cinematography and coloring techniques. The projection practices of the past and present, during and after the presence of the Projectionists Union, and the advent of the "platter," which allowed for automated projection, are discussed.

How home video and cable affected the content of films after the eighties and the history of computerized special effects leading to the development of digital cinema projection are included. The work also covers the changing types of venues over the last third of a century and other aspects that affect, positively or negatively, the entire moviegoing experience.

    Book Description

Packed with color photographs and fascinating tidbits, this book presents an evocative picture of life from the late Victorian era to the beginning of the 21st century, as reflected by the packaging, advertising, magazines, newspapers, toys, royal and commemorative memorabilia, and general ephemera that have accumulated over the last century. This entertaining, insightful collection is at once nostalgic and revealing.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A century of the art of everyday life.......2003-10-21

The author takes us on a delightful trip through the consumer age with its roots in the Victorian era, when mass production first began. Since then, fashionable clothes, cosmetics, books, music and other good things have become available to the general public. The higher standard of living also went hand in hand with increased literacy and greater freedom for women.

This engaging book explores the 20th century decade by decade, looking at aspects of daily life like food, shopping, fashion, entertainment, travel, toys and games through the packaging material, advertising and products themselves. Important events like the World Wars, the coronations, the first man on the moon and the impact of radio and TV are also covered.

Opie's wonderful collection of original items includes comic books, records, newspapers, posters, magazines and various types of souvenir. These objects and images relive history as people remember it, bringing to life again the sights, smells, sounds and tastes of the 20th century.

The book contains an introduction under the headings The Robert Opie Collection, Understanding Our Past, Memories and Our Consumer Society. This is followed by separate chapters on The Victorians and The Edwardians. From there, the chapters follow the decades from The 1910's to The 1990's. The book concludes with an index.

Remember When will appeal to all readers with a fondness for the past, from historians to graphic designers, music, movie and art lovers to those just into nostalgia for the sake of it.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Nostalgic Trip Through Days Gone By........2000-09-12

I first set eyes on this gem of a book at my neighbours beach house whilst we were relaxing with a glass of red, and was entranced from the moment I picked it up. I am an avid collector of memorabilia and found this book to be excellent. I can identify with many of the items that were shown as being popular throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's. I regret that so much of what I had has long ago perished in rubbish dumps, and some of the items are so rare and collectable now. I found thememorablia from the 60's and earlier the most exciting, and loved reading about and looking at items that I hunt for in antique shops and markets! This nostalgic book is very hard, if not impossible, to put down once you start flicking through the pages, and is an absolutely essential purchase for anyone that has an interest in or is a collector of memorabilia. I cannot wait to order my copy!

This book is cheaply constructed and falls apart right away. It is under 30 pages. If you want to play blackjack without counting cards, but any of the popular blackjack books, whether they involve card counting or not. I bought a bunch of them and all of them have a section at the begin on the basic strategy, which is what you are probably looking for anyways. They are better written and cost just a few dollars more. This book is worth ... tops. Buy something else, I regret buying this book.

If you're afraid of learning how to count cards, get this little book. You can read it in less than an hour, on the plane or in your hotel room, and you'll learn how to win at blackjack without learning how to count cards. It also explained to me doubling, splitting, insurance and a lot more! A very easy to read basic book!

5 out of 5 stars Far worth every penny and more - tremendous resource.......2007-08-27

I knew very little about Indesign CS3 when I purchased this book. Easy to read, extremely well-organized and cross-referenced, this in-depth book gave me everything I need to take a document from "File-Open" to Printing production. The author writes in a clear and, surprisingly, engaging style (because long books about computer programs often work better than Narcotics to help you fall asleep). I learned priceless secrets as well as indispensable basics - I will read it again and again to pick up on more and more good, solid material that will continue to help me grow as a desktop publisher. I recommend this book without reservation!

4 out of 5 stars overall pretty good.......2007-07-25

This book has been a pretty good help to me. It helped me learn the program even before I got a copy of it. It is set up for just about any level of experience with the program and is organized into labeled chapters so you can skip any content that you already know or will never use (which may happen a lot if you are not a completely serious publisher). But I think this is a good help for me and I plan to keep it and use for future references with the program.

1 out of 5 stars InDesign (the software) is great. This book is a waste of money.......2007-03-30

Over 900 utterly boring pages. I skimmed the first 150 pages and had to come to the conclusion that you cannot rely on the accuracy of this book. The author lists menus such as "File > Open..." and "explains" that ' "File > Open..." opens files.'. Wow, that was really the holy grail. The ultimate conclusion.

And "File > Print" prints a document... yeah. Sure. I wouldn't know otherwise. The options are listed, but not explained. Unless you are blind, you can see the options you have. I want a book which tells me what these options do, not how many they are. I don't need this kind of "help".

In a nutshell, this book is boring as boring can be. Wasted money. My advice: put your money elsewhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-02-20

The bible all InDesign users should have in their bookshelves. The best reference and recommended book for those who want to learn everything about InDesign in clear and complete explanation. Ask, and this bible would have answers.

    5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2005-09-23

This book has everything you need to know about InDesign. I'm not a beginner at InDesign so I am pleased that this book doesn't treat the reader like one.

5 out of 5 stars I'm giving a book five stars for once!.......2007-07-26

Amazing book. I hardly ever give a book five stars. This is a great "timeline" book, in words, of history that goes well as a tertiary source when reading other books on history. I have the hardcover which is as big as a dictionary and sturdy too. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Too bad he didn't survive to write more.......2006-10-13

I have more I. Asimov books than any other. Although I constantly weed through my books and give many to the library, I will never give up my books written by Isaac Asimov. Chronology of the World, like every other Asimov book, is extremely well written. It is also obvious that he did a lot of research.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutley Incredible writing from a master.......2006-08-27

I normally read books quickly (I read every day and devour books) however I have taken well over two months to read this masterpiece.

Every time I read it I find myself looking back, forward and at the index, re-reading bits and pieces, to pick up threads that are mentioned throughout the book.

The book takes the format of grouping by years, the periods decreasing as time advances. Various countries, areas, groupings are written about with the historical, scientific, artistic, geographical, etc features of the period mentioned in varying degrees of detail. Thus you get a bit of cross talk but it is anything but repetitive.

When the period in question is finished you end up with a fairly easy to understand patchwork of what was happening in the world in the various areas during the period in question.

The good doctor's writing is easy and "chatty", anything but dull or condescending, and as I said earlier, leaves you looking here and there for other bits and pieces that have sprung to mind.

I love history and this is a book I would recommend to ANYONE who wants to start studying in that area. It would be a wonderful stepping stone to help anyone specialise in areas.

I can't recommend it highly enough. If you need sleep - don't buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2006-03-11

Isaac Asimov is probably my favorite writer of non-fiction, and this might just be his best work. Although it covers almost every important event from the Big Bang to the end of World War II, it somehow manages to be far from dry or boring. In fact, much of it reads like a novel - so much so that the book is hard to put down.

Some have complained that Asimov's chronology emphasizes Western events, that it is mainly concerned with military and political history, or that it has no maps. The last of these is the only justified criticism, in my opinion (I found myself referring to an atlas of world history many times while reading this book). Asimov does mention other parts of the world, though not in as much detail. But that can be justified in two ways. First, this is a book for English speakers, and they are more likely to be interested in those events that are connected to their part of the world. Second, the history of the West has in fact had a greater influence on the world as a whole - at least so far - so it is reasonable to spend more time on it.

Essentially the same thing can be said regarding the emphasis on military and political history. As a matter of fact, though, this book probably contains more on such things as the history of science and of literature than most comparable volumes.

    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2004-01-27

Asimov's Chronology of the World is a superb reference work. Although not really (and not meant to be) a coherent narrative, it is highly readable and absolutely essential to any historical research. It is useful as a reference tool in almost any historical context; if you're not sure when something happened, or exactly what happened, consult the Chronology. If it was a major happening, it's almost certain to be there, and realtively easy to find.

Asimov does sacrifice depth for breadth in this work; many more minor events are not covered. Also, if you plan to read this work cover to cover (I did, and it was very well worth the effort--doing so gives a broad perspective on history very difficult to find elsewhere), you need a good historical atlas on hand to understand how events unfold.

The only complaint I have with this work is that Asimov did not live long enough to write the sequel, chronologizing the events from 1945-2000. If anyone has found a good book to fill this gap, please let me know!

In sum, Asimov's Chronology is the essential one-volume reference to world history. No home library should be without it.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good book by Asimov.......2006-04-08

This is probably Isaac Asimov's best non-fiction history book. It tells the story of history from a simple prespective of what happened when. Lots of modern historians have gotten away from that simple approach. It helps that Asimov is not a historian in the traditional academic way. He was just a person who knew a lot about many things, one of them being history.

Coupled with his work about Science and Discovery, it makes for a good reference work that is also a good read.

"Younger scholars have much to gain by their encoutner with these brilliant essays especially where the authors generously gesture precisely to those lacunae in excisting scholarship that may prove to be the foundations of future careers."
—Midwest Jewish Studies Association- Shofar Book Reviews

Sephardic Jews trace their origins to Spain and Portugal. They enjoyed a renaissance in these lands until their expulsion from Spain in 1492, when they settled in the countries along the Mediterranean, throughout the Ottoman Empire, in the Balkans, and in the lands of North Africa, Italy, Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, mixing with the Mizrahi, or Oriental, Jews already in these locations. Sephardic Jews have contributed some of the most important Jewish philosophers, poets, biblical commentators, Talmudic and Halachic scholars, and scientists, and have had a significant impact on the development of Jewish mysticism.

Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewry brings together original work from the world's leading scholars to present a deep introductory overview of their history and culture over the past 1500 years. The book presents an overarching chronological and thematic survey of topics ranging from the origin of Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewry and their history to kabbalah, philosophy, and biblical commentary, and Sephardic Jewish life in the modern era. This collection represents the most up-to-date scholarship about Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewry available.

Contributors include: Mark R. Cohen, Norman Stillman, David Bunis, Jonathan Decter, Yitzhak Kalimi, Moshe Idel, Annette B. Fromm, Zvi Zohar, Morris Fairstein, Pamela Dorn Sezgin, Mark Kligman, and Henry Abramson.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Survey of Sephardic/Oriental Jewry.......2005-11-02

              The reviewer is a teacher.
This is a fantastic, interesting, and very readable overview of all the important aspects of Sephardic and Oriental Jewry--origins, language, history, culture, contributions to the Jewish and non-Jewish world, etc... Very accessible for the layperson and yet sophisticated enough for the scholar. Clears up what exactly are the 3 main ethnic groups within the Jewish people and how they came about. The introductory essay gives an excellent overview of each chapter and its highlights. The final chapter by the editor proposes a new and very challenging theory as to why Jews from Arab lands experienced discrimination upon making aliyah (coming to live) in Israel. This is THE book you want if you are looking for the most up-to-date and comprehensive treatment of this subject. A pleasure to read!!!

              Book Description

"Richard M. Jaeger does such a good job of communicating the concept in nontechnical and applicable terms. In particular, I like Jaeger's emphasis on understanding the logic of the methods and interpreting statistical reports. His book provides the student with an alternative explanation of the underlying logic of statistical methods that I provide in class. Students have found Jaeger to be very understandable-- I have had almost universal praise of Jaeger. . . . Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this book is its clear exposition of some rather complex concepts. Jaeger's explanations are clear, he uses realistic and generally understandable examples, and does not take himself too seriously. . . . This is an excellent nontechnical statistics text."

              --Barry Nocks, Clemson University

"(This book) has become one of my favorite resources and references. I love reading it. It offers pleasant reading that is interesting and completely comprehensible. And most important, it has improved my understanding of the concepts that had previously eluded me. Thank you again for offering the definitive aid to understanding the world of statistics. Who would have believed that such a topic could have been presented so wonderfully?"

              --Elaine R. Kersten, Doctoral Candidate,

              University of Massachusetts at Amherst

              From the First Edition:

"The premise is that many of us need an understanding of statistics in order to become intelligent consumers of the reports and research generated by business, government, social scientists, and educators. . . The style is lucid and lively. A careful reading of this book could well make one reexamine the old cliche about lies, damn lies, and statistics."

              --Choice

"Using clear explanations (and excluding the equations), readers learn from examples how to understand what statistics are, what they mean, and how they are used and interpreted, particularly in the social and behavioral sciences. Includes problems with answers. The book will help anyone who needs to understand statistics."

--Journal of the Institute of Health Education

"I found the author's presentation clear and readable. He introduces the different types of case study in a very logical manner, well illustrated with practical examples, and accompanied with helpful guidelines to encourage researchers to consider a broader range of research methods. . . . I would recommend this book to novices and established researchers alike. It has good breadth and depth of coverage presented in a very digestible form."

              --Statistician

"Well-written; Richard M. Jaeger's lighthearted style, so often lacking in statistical texts, makes enjoyable reading. Because it starts with the basics of making sense of numbers and works its way gently up to some more complex statistical techniques, the book will be useful to the complete novice as well as the more experienced number cruncher."

              --Nursing Standard

"Comprehensive text, clear illustrations, and an outstanding glossary. . . . An excellent resource. . . . An invaluable reference. . . . No graduate student . . . in a statistics course should be without it!"

              --ANNA Journal

Popular in its first edition with researchers and practitioners and widely adopted for undergraduate and graduate courses, the new second edition continues to give readers a conceptual understanding of statistics without becoming mired down in statistical computations. Presuming no statistical background and beginning with the most fundamental methods for drawing statistical inferences to a variety of real-world applications, Richard M. Jaeger clearly describes and illustrates statistical procedures. New to the second edition are chapters on John Tukey's exploratory data analysis, including stem-and-leaf displays, a new chapter on threats to internal and external validity, a complete revamp of the measurement chapter to bring it up-to-date with the latest edition of the Standard for Educational and Psychological Testing, and updated examples of research applications in every chapter. Specific examples are drawn from the files of the Educational Resources Information Centers (ERIC), and a complete glossary of statistical terms, as well as a new subject index, are provided.

An excellent resource for both undergraduate and graduate students, or anyone else desiring statistical comprehension.

This was recommended to me by my advisor as I prepare for my Ph.D. comps. It is a thorough review of statistics, and has made my review of statistics and methodology much more effective and organized.

5 out of 5 stars As a student, it made the difference..........2002-07-24

...between simply regurgitating what I needed on the exams, and understanding the subject. I borrowed a friend's copy, and suddenly statistics, the Big Problem course for me, became fun.

Now I work in a field where I crunch a lot of numbers, and I could recite the ideas in this book in my sleep. I still keep a copy on hand for two reasons:

              1) I'm often called on to expain my conclusions in "layman's terms" (yikes!). Jaeger's presentation is thorough and clear; I re-read his passages to remind myself how to say things clearly.

              2) I also often work with people who are over-educated in some endevours, but badly under-educated in statistics. They're often using numbers to make decisions, and using them clumsily. I lend them Jaeger, with a stern warning that if I don't get it back in a timely fashion, there will be dire consequences (I give them about 2 weeks - usually enough for them to decide they need their own copy).

              So, if...

              1) you need to crunch numbers but think you hate statistics, or
              2) you are a student, and you think you hate your statistics coursework, or
              3) you're having trouble explaining things to people who think they hate statistics

get this book (there are probably lots of other reasons I've omitted).

              5 out of 5 stars You Say You Want A Revolution. . . . . ........2000-07-18

Jaeger's book is the standard bearer to the "Statistical Revolution." That is, Statistics made fun and easy. The drudgery of laboring over ponderous Statistics books is gone!

Jaeger's book is an absolute must for those people who simply want to understand statistics; as they appear in various business and government reports, polls, and professional research papers. Jaeger proves that you don't have to fill your head with a bunch of equations and Greek letters to understand and appreciate the beauty of statistics. In reality, as Jaeger so expertly points out, Statistics is a straight forward subject that has been misused, abused, and poorly taught throughout the ages.

This book does not teach you how to compute statistics. Why should it? Any electronic spreadsheet worth its salt can calculate the most cumbersome of equations with a single key stroke! Therefore, unlike other books on statistics, this book contains absolutely no equations and a minimum of Greek letters.

This book's primary focus is on teaching the "user" of statistical information what statistics are, what they mean, and how to use and interpret them appropriately.

The first six chapters in this book focus on descriptive statistics -- such as the measures of central tendency, graphical and tabular presentation of data, disbursement of data about the mean (standard deviation and range), and other similar topics. Chapters 7 through 14 discuss inferential statistics -- such as analysis of variance and hypothesis testing. Chapter 15 addresses advanced topics, such as regression models and forecasting.

If you want to be a "producer" of statistics, then this is not the book for you -- look elsewhere! However, if you are in a position where you are presented statistical data to help you make an informed decision, then; by all means, buy this book immediately.

This book is ideal for managers in private industry and government agencies who live and die by statistical data -- such as people supervising production, training, quality control, or a method improvement / efficiency cell. This book is also good for military leaders to help them understand and discuss the statistics presented in readiness issues, mobilization topics, and unit readiness.

I strongly recommend this book. As a matter of fact, this book will make great reading to accompany the Standard Deviants tapes on statistics.

Buy this book! You will never look at statistical data quite the same way again. You will become an "abuser" of statistics worst nightmare -- someone knowledgeable enough to understand and challenge his data.

Excellent book. . . .Well worth the price!
