                      Book Description

"My Time At Bat" is one man's tale of success in a career where the odds were clearly not in his favor—in Major League Baseball. Chuck Hinton, an All Star, takes us down the road to the big league, over every bump and hurdle along the way. He took a chance and hitchhiked 300 miles for a baseball tryout and made it. He reveals his secrets about how he stayed there for eleven years.

But this book offers much more. Chuck Hinton persevered just as much off the field. He offers many principles to live by that will benefit everyone, male or female, in any walk of life. After all, it was important to him to be more than a Major League player. He strove to be a Major Person in everything he did.

In the early '60s, he led the Senators in batting three out of the four seasons he played for the team. He also led that team in stolen bases and triples all four years. His Minor League career highlights include 1959 Rookie of the Year, back-to-back league batting championships and league Most Valuable Player.

As you embark on his journey, you will see what it was like to be in the Major Leagues—and what it took to stay there. With the book's behind-the-scenes stories, words of encouragement and life lessons, this book is sure to be a hit for players and fans alike.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, pleasant Summertime Reading.......2005-05-21

"My Time at Bat" is the biography of Chuck Hinton, who played in the American League from 1961-1971. Most people identify Chuck as a former Washington Senator, though he also played for the Indians. It is no poor reflection on Hinton that MLBB was just then starting its' decline from the "Golden Era" of 1946-1960. Expansion had begun the inevitable dissolution of the talent pool. However many fine players from the 40s and 50s were still in uniform during Chuck's career. MTB is a leisurely account of Hinton's days in the minors, majors and the US Army. MTB is filled with helpful on the field and off the field tips to survival. One point is crystal clear: The pressure is intense-players must bear down, not get distracted. Few mistakes are tolerated on the Major League level. There are some minor detractions: The photos are not of a high quality and a tad too much time is devoted to Hinton family matters. These matters are common to many sports' tales. Perhaps players wish to impart the point that they are people too. Mr. Hinton struck this reviewer as a highly principled guy and a real family man. After his ML days, Chuck was the baseball coach at Howard University. His players must have had high graduation rates! This offering will not reach the piinacle of great sports literature. However, MTB is a nice pleasant leisurely read, just right, as it says above, for the Summertime.

4 out of 5 stars A BOOK WELL WORTH READING.......2003-11-17

CHUCK HINTON WRITES ABOUT HIS LIFE AND CAREER IN BASEBALL. HIS STORY HAS A WHOLE LOT OF EXCELLENT INSIGHTS HOW TO PLAY AND IMPROVE YOUR ABILITIES AS A PLAYER. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY HE SHARES HIS LIFE AS A PERSON AND BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN. CHUCK HAS SOME GREAT OPINIONS, INSIGHTS, AND EXPERIENCES TO SHARE. I SAW CHUCK PLAY AS A MEMBER OF THE CLEVELAND INDIANS, HE WAS A SOLID AND RELIABLE PLAYER. HIS BOOK IS FROM THE HEART. THE ONLY COMPLAINT IS, TOO BAD THERE WASN'T MORE. CHUCK'S BOOK IS VERY HEART WARMING AND A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FROM TODAY'S SELF CENTERED AND GREEDY ATHLETES OF TODAY. BLESS YOU CHUCK.

Chuck Hinton is, to date, the best African-American ballplayer in Washington Senators history. He and Frank Howard are the two most remembered position players from the expansion years.

This autobiography looks back at the struggles and achievements of Chuck Hinton as a young African American ballplayer in the early 60's. He played a total of 11 seasons with four teams (and remains to this day the last Senator to bat over .300). Away from the playing field, Hinton founded the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association while guiding the Howard University baseball team to more wins than any other coach in school history. Through it all, Hinton has retained his warmth and enthusiastic spirit, an effusive nature that emanates throughout the book." -November 6 - 12, 2002

My Time At Bat: A Story Of Perseverance is the memoir of Chuck Hinton, a successful African-American player in Major League Baseball and the founder of The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. Very highly recommended reading (especially for baseball fans), My Time At Bat is highly recommended as an insightful story of one man's drive to follow his dream and make the most of what life to offer...

                      Book Description

"If there's one place a cowboy can kick off his spurs and be happy for the rest of his life, that's where we're going. So hang on, partner!"--Ross Bodine, played by William Holden on Wild Rovers.

Western Movie Wit & Wisdom is a compilation of quotations from western movies ranging from the 1920s to the films of the present. In addition to the regular films, it also includes silent films (via title cards), serials, miniseries, documentaries, and even a couple of cowboy cartoons!

Here film characters give advice, words of wisdom, funny lines, or an occasional historical fact. Many of these quotations reflect our American culture and have applications for contemporary living. Although the quotations were uttered in a western setting, they are really about life itself. For example, as Tom Lawson (Tom Mix) indicated in Rustler's Roundup (1933): "Life is just a bank. You can't take out any more than you put in."

This compilation of pithy quotations from westerns of my youth is an absolute pleasure to read! Think of the "short & sweet" of all the hilarious, sarcastic, wisecracking, thoughtful, insightful and incisive remarks made by characters in the westerns that we grew up on - without the "filler." This book is like Lay's Potato Chips: "Bet you can't read just one!"

                          Book Description

The Web application infrastructure ASP.NET, introduced as part of version 1.0 of the Microsoft .NET Framework, provides the thin-client counterpart to Microsoft Windows® client development. With dramatic improvements in performance, productivity, and security features, Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005 and ASP.NET 2.0 deliver a simplified, high-performance, and powerful Web development experience. ASP.NET 2.0 features a new set of controls and infrastructure that simplify Web-based data access and include functionality that facilitates code reuse, visual consistency, and aesthetic appeal. Now you can teach yourself the essentials of working with ASP.NET 2.0 in the Visual Studio environment—one step at a time. With STEP BY STEP, you work at your own pace through hands-on, learn-by-doing exercises. Whether you're a beginning programmer or new to this version of the technology, you'll understand the core capabilities and fundamental techniques for ASP.NET 2.0. Each chapter puts you to work, showing you how, when, and why to use specific features of the ASP.NET 2.0 rapid application development environment and guiding you as you create actual components and working applications for the Web, including advanced features such as personalization.

One star is too high a rating. This book has far too many errors and omissions. You will find yourself having to debug the examples in the book. The published errata is a joke. There are 10 times as many mistakes. Weak.

Okay I should read reviews more often! I picked up this book as a couple of the other MS Press books I have have been great. This book says you don't need to know anything about ASP.NET. Well after 5 chapters of painful reading and examples I feel like my brain is about ready to leak out of my ears. Considering I have 9 years of classic ASP/PHP development experience I find this rather amusing.

If your going to pick up this book you should have good fundamental understanding of C# 2.0 because this book isn't going to teach you. You will also need to get hold of Visual Studio 2005. You can try with MS Visual Web Developer Express but I fear you'll be wasting your time.

                          2 out of 5 stars I've read much better.......2007-03-23

I'm relatively new to ASP.NET, and I got this book because it's used for a class I'm taking in ASP and ColdFusion right now.

I just finished reading chapter five, and I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. It's a shame that the book is called "Step by Step", because that term really couldn't be further from the truth when it comes to this book (in my opinion at least). Chapter five was composite controls, which isn't really hard but a pretty important intermediate concept. Not only is it in the first half of the book, but the entire chapter just felt rushed. The book didn't even provide all the code needed to make the project work (for example, I had to figure out the code for a button to process a request for a palindrome checker. It ended up not being too hard, but I have school assignments to frustrate me, I don't need a learning resource to do the that for me.) The code from the book also had several errors that turned up problems in Visual Studio which I also had to spend a good 15-20 extra minutes fixing.

Granted, I'm only on chapter five so far but I don't feel as though I've learned nearly as much from this book as I have in others. If you're a beginner I'd try looking elsewhere.

I have all the books by David Wallechinksy. My husband and I used to take turns reading excerpts to each other.

I was so excited when I saw another book of facts, I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. Looking forward to more books like this one.

As a kid growing up in the late 70's I enjoyed reading the "People's Almanac" series. These books not only helped to build my love of reading but they also solidified my young identity as a "seeker of knowledge." So it was obviously a pleasure to come across this more recent edition with it's focus on the 20th century.

The subjects covered include crime, religion, war, natural disasters animals and movies. Of course, not every topic will be of interest to every reader. But, at over 900 pages, there is certainly more than enough here that any reader with a reasonable degree of intellectual curiosity will get their money's worth.

I am a "People's Almanac" "Book of Lists" junkie. I own them all. I swear if I took one item with me to a desert island, this would be it. Some people that have read these books cover to cover like I have, may notice some items are the same as in previous books. Who CARES?! This is the stuff of life. I just wish the book wasn't so dang heavy!

The content of this book is amazing, but most impresssive is the manner in which is laid out. In the various sections you get subheadings with the background, the information and the follow up where deemed appropriate. It is ideal for anybody who has an interest in general knowledge or just enjoys finding out more about specific topics. As with most books of it's type you can put it down and return back to it and immediately be engrossed in the content. Great information on wierd and strange happenings also. Highly recommended

Have you ever met somebody at a party who just seems to know all sorts of interesting stories and anecdotes? He's probably read this book. The publishers advertise this as "History with the dull parts left out," and that's exactly what it is. A compendium from three prior "People's Almanacs" published in the mid-70s, this book takes all the material that deals with the 20th century, in many cases updating it since the 1970s. Topics are both mainstream and offbeat: everything from infamous assassinations to famous people in literature, U.S. presidents to notorious kidnappings. The book is filled with off-beat quotes and surprising facts and figures--it's akin to a Ripley's Believe It Or Not combined with a world almanac, only better than both. And for the price, it's a steal. If you want a fun page turner that will also make you a little better-informed every time you read it, a light "popular" history of the 20th century that's most substantive than most other books of its type, this is for you. You might also want to look in used bookstores or online for the original Peoples Almanacs--dated, but still fascinating.

                              Book Description

The concept of â€~empire’ has existed since King Sargon of Akkad conquered Mesopotamia more than 4,000 years ago. Since his Akkadian dynasty many other empires have risen and fallen; Assyrian, Roman, Mongol, Aztec, Habsburg, British and Soviet -- all have held sway over far-flung territories and peoples, usually through force, and always seeking economic gain. The construction of an empire invariably meant suffering for the conquered peoples, but empires have also contributed to stability and wealth, and many have acted as catalysts for social, political and technological progress. But what drives one nation to expand and exert its influence to extend over others? With specially commissioned cartography, color illustrations and photographs, Historical Atlas of Empires explores and explains the ever-changing concept of empire from the ancient Middle East to the superpowers of the 20th century.

                              Book Description

"With this one compact statement, Jacob Needleman has forced the discussion of both science and religion in our time into a new, more mature and discriminating phase. . . . It is a way station where those who are seriously exploring the transformation of consciousness will have to stop, take thought, and perhaps re-plot their course."-Theodore Roszak

"I want to strongly recommend it to every reader seriously interested in our present cultural situation."-Fritjof Capra

"Needleman is unique; he is really on to something. . . . A fine book"-Harvey Cox

Western science has operated for centuries on the assumption that we can understand the universe without understanding ourselves. We are just now seeking to make the necessary connection between the general laws of nature to those of our own (inner) nature. But the job won't be done with "massive injections of the new consciousness"; we cannot democratize the sacred by cheapening its demands.

"My aim in this book therefore" says Needleman, "has not been to speak of the convergence of science and spirituality, but of their separation. As in nature itself, organic unity is a reciprocal relationship between separate but interdependent entities. In human life as well, there can be no real unity except through the awareness of real divisions. One may then hope to experience the magic power of sustained awareness by itself to bring the harmony that we have until now fruitlessly attempted to impose on ourselves and on our endangered civilization."

Jacob Needleman is a professor of philosophy at San Francisco State University and the author of many books, including Money and the Meaning of Life, and The American Soul. In addition to his teaching and writing, he serves as a consultant in the fields of psychology, education, medical ethics, philanthropy, and business, and has been featured on Bill Moyers's acclaimed PBS series A World of Ideas.

Love Needed for Science of Spirituality
I've always equated Edgar Cayce with the scientific approach. That link may seem odd to folks who think of science as all numbers and stainless steel, but I think of science as a method of questioning. Religion, for example, confidently offers its answers while science is skeptical. In its doubting, science wants to stick its finger into the miracle to actually feel it. Galileo wants to peek into the telescope to see if the sun really does revolve around the earth while the Pope remains seated, content with the Bible's description of heaven. Science as it is practiced today, of course, is more like religion in that science has stopped questioning its assumptions. But I'm speaking about the spirit of science, the force in nature that is continually seeking to expand its consciousness.
So why do I link Edgar Cayce with science? Because so often he requested that we ignore his words unless we have tested his suggestions, tried them out, and made them our own, so that we can speak from our experience rather than from his readings. When he says, "In the application comes the awareness," it means to me that thinking about living is different than actually living, and it is in the living that the thoughts about living really take on any value they may have to guide our living.
Cayce's preaching about personal application as a form of scientific research receives support from the rather complex message in the book A Sense of the Cosmos: Scientific Knowledge and Spiritual Truth (Monkfish Book Publishing Company). The author, Jacob Needleman, is a well-known philosopher and someone who has addressed Edgar Cayce audiences. The book is his answer to the puzzle over the seeming failure of science to help us live life better. He ponders why it might be that even as science attempts, in the guise of transpersonal psychology, to discover the laws of life that will provide genuine human fulfillment, it seems to fall short of the mark. He applauds science's curiosity, its unquenchable thirst for better knowledge, but he notes that it lacks an important ingredient. Of the many ways he describes this missing component, my favorite is when he calls it "the knowledge of the heart."
Intellectual knowledge is important, but in itself is insufficient to discover and live the sacred ideas reality has lying in wait for us. Religion has given us some handles on these ideas, and science is searching for its own handles. But he believes that both have neglected an important aspect of the human being as a phenomenon who processes ideas and uses them to interact with reality. It is the human body. Our instincts, feelings, the heart, and not the head, is our capability for experiencing values. Using the intellect alone, the scientistic human can not see values as an objective aspect of reality, but only as a subjective personal choice. On the other hand, the human being with head and heart integrated is indeed capable of both experiencing the objective values that lie inherent in the created world and understanding how to establish a relationship with those values--in other words, to live them.
I received a sacred idea once in a dream. There was a locomotive in the dream. There was a sail plane, too, the type that soars on the wings of the wind rather than by use of a propeller or jet engine. In the dream, I am told that under certain conditions, I can fly in the sail plain, receiving the "lift" I need from the locomotive. I meditated on that dream and could understand the symbology of the fixed, karmic path of the cause-and-effect ironhorse track and, in contrast, the relative freedom and grace of the gossamer sail plane. But it wasn't until I got up out of my chair and began to dance each component, allowing the dream's symbology to have use of my body and its sensations, that I was led into a state of transformative consciousness. For a moment of grace I was actually able to experience the sacred, as if "The Secret" had revealed Itself to me. My body, moving to the images of the dream, led to the intuitive discovery of how the two dimensions of my being can actually cooperate and work together.
To reconcile these two dimensions of human existence, the spiritual and the material, seems to be Needleman's goal. It is not a task for the intellect alone, nor is it a task that just anyone can accomplish. He wants us to understand that it requires virtue. This virtue is a willingness to experience the higher truths for their own sake--not for the sake of getting a leg up on life's satisfactions or to gain special credentials to enjoy the satisfactions of the afterlife--but purely for the sake of experiencing the joy and love that these truths contain. To love for the sake of love itself is what is required to be able to experience--not just to think about--the meaning of love, much less to realize the mystical equation, "God is Love," which would initiate a spiritual science.
