Brett Favre: Huck Finn Grows Up-review.......2000-05-29
This is a well written book. Personally I liked it. Not only because I'm a fan of Brett Favre, but that this book shows the life and personality of him. The book goes behind the scenes of this football superstar into his personal life. The author (Steve Cameron) provides a great view of Brett's personality and ability. The book includes personal insight and quotes. Another plus is a few pictures, and even one of Brett's wedding night! From high school hard ball to a pro career with the Packers Steve Cameron shows you the life of Brett Favre, All in all this is one great biography!

No Deadbeats?.......2000-06-29
This is a reprinting of an amazing San Fransico 'zine from the late Seventies. There is incredible, otherwise unavailable coverage here of many obscure West Coast Punk groups, with helpful scene reports from around the US and the world, essays on early Punk culture and politics, and impressive artwork and photos. The interviews are unique and far from obvious, providing insights into the personalities (and record collections!) of many important musicians. Impressive interviews with Pere Ubu, Dev-o, and the Screamers, among many other groups. This book also provides a detailed look into the S.F. and L.A. Punk scenes (who partied where with whom and what happened). I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the wild west Coast Punk culture of the late Seventies. Flaws? No info on the Deadbeats, Pink Section, The Units, or Los Microwaves (though it has pictures of Pink Section and the Units in #'s 7-11).

This is the one I have been looking for........2007-06-30
If you are reading this review you probably are looking for a comprehensive text on socket programming. Look no further. This is the One. You can stop reading reviews trying to find the perfect one and go hit the Add To Shopping Cart button with confidence. Detailed, comprehensive and clear. A favorite.
Competent Update to the Stevens Classic.......2007-06-19
This book consists of "in the trenches" information Mr. Stevens learned over the years by reading source, testing thoroughly, documenting extensively, and assembling carefully all this data into one heck of a book on Unix programming. I feel certain in declaring that many who've developed code on Unix know instantly of Stevens' works. This update to his book appears just as thorough.
I do agree with a previous reviewer who was unhappy with the code samples' dependency on a header file in the back of the book. It's a clumsy technique, but it's difficult to imagine another way to accomplish the goals of including the header.
A piece of art.......2007-04-11
This book is excellent. I had previously bought "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" by the same author and I loved it so now that I have to do network programming in Linux I got a copy of UNP. The book is well organized and has a lot more information than I expected (Raw sockets, Packet capture, IPv6 etc). Everything is explained clearly and with a lot of examples. It's a shame that the author passed away because I would buy any other book he wrote. Buy this book, it's expensive but It's so professional that is a "must have" for anyone that's going to be programming network applications in UNIX systems.
Thank you, Richard Stevens. Rest in Peace.
4½ stars -- minor gripes.......2006-11-09
The book contains everything that I want to know about the Unix Sockets API. The book is well structured, and the explanations are generally good. I would give it 4½ stars if it was possible.
I do have a few minor gripes though. The text can be a bit dull compared to other books. I bought "Programming with POSIX(R) Threads" by David R. Butenhof at the same time, and this book is much more entertaining while still factual and correct.
I dislike that all the examples in the book uses a special header defined in the Appendix. That makes it impossible to use snippets of code from the examples to make your own applications.
Brilliant. A definitive work........2006-08-27
This is by far the most comprehensive, easy to understand book regarding Unix Network Programming I have come across. Professors in most major university treat teaching unix network programming like brain surgery, they make it as difficult as possible. The book explain every concept in an easy to understand language, TCP, UDP,SCTP, etc, you name it is all here. There is so much to learn from this book for all users novice and advanced and it also makes an excellent reference book. Every unix network programmer should have this book by their side, this is the unix networking programming bible. Like we say in wall street, a great investment, highly recommended.

In this acclaimed biographical novel, Irving Stone brings to life the tender and poignant love story of Rachel and Andrew Jackson. "Beyond any doubt one of the great romances of all time." -- The Saturday Review of Literature

Compelling, a page-turner .......2007-09-10
To the Ends of the Earth: The Last Journey of Lewis & Clark
Rachel Jackson was the kind of woman for whom the word "long-suffering" seems to have been invented. But as detailed in The President's Lady, the classic historical novel by Irving Stone, Rachel Jackson's true tragedy came when she met and married the love of her life, Andrew Jackson.
Stone paints a complex and realistic portrait of the love and marriage of Rachel and Andrew Jackson, based on obviously deep historical research (though some of what is known of the Jacksons has changed since the book was first published in 1951). First thrown together in the aftermath of her painful split from her first husband, the young couple received word that Rachel's husband had divorced her. They became man and wife. Two years later, they learned that the divorce had never been finalized. They were forced to agree to finalize the divorce on the grounds of adultery (Rachel's cohabitation with Jackson), and were then married again in a second ceremony.
This troubled time would haunt the Jacksons for the rest of their married life. Driven by a ravening ambition, Andrew would thrust himself into the spotlight, making powerful enemies through his brash behavior and mercurial personality. As Stone notes through Rachel's eyes, what happens to one spouse happens to the other. There were times when Rachel was Jackson's only, lonely supporter as he faced ruin. She helped him build again. And time and again, Andrew's enemies would attack him through Rachel, branding her an adulteress, a scarlet woman, even a prostitute.
In The President's Lady, Stone does a masterful job with point-of-view. The entire book is told from Rachel's perspective, from her nightmarish divorce to her immersion in her farm and husband to her heartbreaking trials as his fame grew. The historical details are wonderful, and the powerful message about the corrosive power of gossip is as current as the latest Britney Spears debacle.
But the true greatness of The President's Lady is the glimpse Stone gives us into the vulnerable soul of Rachel Jackson. From youth to the cusp of old age, we experience Rachel's love for Andrew and her forgiveness of his shortcomings, her grief and her joys, her outrage and her heartbreak. I'm not ashamed to say that I shed a few tears at Rachel's worn and ragged last journey, which came as her husband was at last elected President of the United States.
LOVED this book.......2003-02-08
Had already read "The Origin" and loved it so gave this a try. Fantastic. Also, was visiting Nashville when I started it (didn't even know this is where they were from at the time) and got to visit the Hermitage while reading it. Really brought things to life. A great read!
The President's Lady: A Novel of Rachel and Andrew Jackson.......2002-05-31
Just finished reading this for a class. Enjoyable and a fast read in historical fiction. I especially admired the skillful way Irving Stone mixes fiction and fact to breath fresh life into long dead characters. The story is told through Rachel Jackson's narrative and we immediately find out about her first marriage to an abusive husband. The after effects of this tragic marriage have diastrous consequences for the future political career of Andrew Jackson. Love triumphs and the tender depictions of the couples enduring love and intimate moments make the book a very human and readable. I'm not a history buff, but the book is interesting and historically accurate. The descriptions of New Orleans were appreciated. Rachel proves to be a more than capable homesteader, managing a large property and horses in Jackson's absence. A good perspective showing Americian politics hasn't really changed much at all.
A great way to present history.......2001-12-04
Reading history can be challenging. But Irving Stone makes reading history a delightfull and entertaining experience. This book is very well researched and presents an in depth portrait of an enduring love affair. A must read for students of American history and a delight for all.
my review.......2000-02-29
I enjoyed this book very much. The author tried to recapture the true story by only using real characters and real facts. This method only makes the book seem more real and interesting, because you really learn! to any history lover, this is a great work!

Concise and a good general overview.......2006-08-29
Stillman gives a concise, yet thorough history of the Jews in Arab Lands. While he covers over eleven (11) century's of Jewish History, he touches on the important events and figures that shaped attitudes to the Jewish populations from Spain to Iran. The second half of the book is dedicated to the sources which he draws from to paint the picture of Jewish life throughout those lands.
If you are looking for a general overview, I would recommend his work. While his writing is clear, at times the sources are not translated well enough for a fluid read.
Landmark Scholarship in Judaic Studies.......1999-12-01
Of all the great Jewish minds of the last millenium, few have paralled that of Moses Maimonides. Until the present generation of scholars, however, little research has been done to delve into the world of Sephardi and Eastern Jewry which gave rise to such a brilliant intellect.
Professor Stillman has translated and presented precious resources from the Cairo Genizah, the most significant find in the history of Medieval Jewish History, to give modern scholars the clearest picture possible of Jewish life in medieval and early modern Arab society.

Excellent.......2007-06-16
An entertaining read. Unlike Morris Kline book "Mathematics for the Non-Mathematician", Jane Muir inserts absolutely no math in "Of Men and Numbers: The Story of the Great Mathematicians" but outlines the history of the great men in mathematics". I learned so much about Archimedes and the legend surrounding his death, Cantor who invented the cardinality of numbers, Gauss..if anyone knows mathematics, you are pretty much set on labeling him the giant of mathematics..., Euler (another giant), Newton, Lobachevky (the founder of the beleif of non-euclidean geometry), Pascal, and several more. Sometimes, the excerpts of the book are quite funny if not tragic. Take Gauss, he was serious at work while his wife was dying...a maid came to him and told him that it may be the final seconds...Gauss tells her "Ask her to wait until I've finished the problem." Yeah...well...it was funny, but... Great book.
E. T. Bell clone - shares his regrettable style.......2007-05-15
It is a pity that Jane Muir seems to have modeled her book on "Men of Mathematics" by E. T. Bell. Like him, she "embellishes" her biographies to the point of sacrificing historical accuracy. Unfortunately (from my point of view) she also shares some of Bell's anti-Christian sentiments. For example, in the section on Blaise Pascal, she portrays Pascal as a mentally ill religious lunatic. Naturally, in the section on Evariste Galois, the great mathematician Cauchy is made out to be a fool and a bigoted religious fanatic while Galois (a very unstable, self-destructive character if there ever was one) is made out to be the martyred hero!
A brilliant book.......2004-01-04
I have been reading a lot of popular math/biography books, and this is one of the best books I have read. The way the author weaves history and math in a seamless manner is just awesome. Even the descriptions of the countries/cities where the mathematicians lived makes you want to grab a history textbook to know more.
P.S: You might be surprised by certain politically incorrect phrases like "we modern men", etc ...That is because this book was originally published in 1961
"Of Men & Numbers by Jane Muir - A review.......2001-01-25
This is an ENJOYABLE book. I am not a mathematician, but came across this book by chance while looking for some specific explanations. The book was so interesting and well written that I stopped my research and read it through. I would characterize it roughly as a chronological explanation of the lives of the world's great mathematicians. It relates their lives and contributions to knowledge to those who lived before and after them. The author strikes a very nice balance between explanation of their environment and their contribution to knowledge (and its acceptance, rejection, or being ignored). Its all nicely woven together. The book gave me the feeling of getting just the right amount of detail and explanation with plenty of references for those who wish to study deeper on many subjects covered in the book. Try it. You'll like it. End of review
Excellent non-technical book on the development of math!.......1998-08-24
This is an great book for anyone who has even a slight interest in mathematics. There are lots of references to interesting math ideas & concepts, but nothing overbearing or over-techincal. It doesn't read like a textbook at all. In fact, it reads like a biography - an intriguing look into the lives of famous mathematicians with plenty of math ideas to keep your mind going - all that can be understood with a minimal education in high school math. If there is anything to complain about the book, it is that sometimes it focuses too much on the lives of the mathematicians and not enough on their work (this is why I gave it 4 and not 5 stars). However, if you're into biographies AND math, then this is a must-read, 5-star book!
