As good as the best from Tom Wolfe.......2002-07-24
A view of the guts of part of the finantial industry in a style that I found very similar to Tom Wolfe's ( no offense intended to either author). Instructive as well as entertaining.
Read for a basic understanding of share trading.......2000-11-16
Liar's Poker's explanations of Share Trading terminology (ie. shorting and junk bonds), was helpful to the novice stock broker, as myself.
The plot was lacking, although the story of Salomon and the volatile financial markets kept my interest.
For all aspiring Investment Bankers!.......2000-04-12
Almost everyone who is graduating is tempted by the glamour and large bonuses of Investment Banks to wonder what it would be like to work in a large investment bank on Wall Street and actually consider it as a serious career option. LIAR'S POKER provides an irreverent, bird's eye view of the whole process. This is an extraordinarily funny but thought provoking account of a money focussed guy's innings at a venerable Investment bank Salomon Brothers, starting as a $48,000-a-year trainee in 1984 to go on to become an institutional bond salesman in Salomon's London office earning $225,000 in 1987. Far from just being entertaining the book gives lots of insight into the intense cutthroat investment banking industry and makes it accessible for even the naivest of readers the intricacies of the milieu. An insider's look at the inside of an investor banking firm, with no holds barred, which makes it probably one of the most recommended books for anyone considering more than a passing acquaintance with the investment banking industry.

Book Description
Published as a one-shot review in late 1960, The Hasty Papers was immediately embraced by the literary and art communities for the courage of its ideas and means of expression. Legendary painter Willem de Kooning called it a "... a snapshot of us all."Marvelous and unruly, the works by artists, poets, critics, politicians and others brought together in a single publication created a vivid portrait of the moment and the future. Scorned at the time by the establishment and known mostly to their peers, many of the contributors are today's acknowledged masters.
The millennium version of this historic publication contains some 400 new photographs; an introduction by poet David Lehman; The Story of The Hasty Papers, related by Alfred Leslie in Pushkin's sonnet form; and Brother Can You Spare a Dime, an epistolary novel of sorts, documenting the making of The Hasty Papers in 111 letters to and from authors and the editors.
Contributors include: Alfred Leslie, David Lehman, Jean Paul Sartre, Pontus Hulten, Gregory Corso, James Schuyler, Walter Harrison Mason, Hannelore Hahn, Frank O'Hara, Joel Oppenheimer, Allen Ginsberg, John Ashbery, Aristophones, Jack Kerouac, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Donald Windham, Charles Olson, Derek Walcott, Kenward Elmslie, William Carlos Williams, Billy Kluver, Alan Ansen, Terry Southern, Gael Turnbull, Peter Orlovsky, Alfred Jensen, Meyer Liben, Jean Genet, Kenneth Koch and Fitzhugh Ludlow (an entire novel). Also included is the uncut text of Fidel Castro's 1960 speech to the United Nations with the point by point response by the United States.

An old friend.......2005-08-21
I owned the original, bought around 1962 or so.
I've always wondered what happened to it. No doubt it was ripped off by a friend who foresaw better than I that someday it would be revered as a classic.
At the time it seemed the precursor of a tide of similar publications, some of which, one hoped, would improve upon it with more discriminating content.
Nope. It was a one-shot, and this, perhaps as much as anything else aout it, escalated the literary stock of its often trashy writing.
My five-star review is a tribute to both its uniqueness and my nostalgia for the Beat sensibility it represented that was so formative to me.
They should have reissued it on newsprint.
An excellent reprint of a true literary classic........2000-02-04
This millennium edition of Leslie's One Shot Review is an excellent reprint returning a classic to new audiences. Originally published in 1960, this volume provides work by some of the finest 20th century authors from Allen Ginsberg and Kenneth Koch to Terry Southern. Also included: Fidel Castro's 1960 address to the U.N. This millennium edition contains a narrative poem by the author commenting on the origins of the original Hasty Papers. A keepsake literary work in an oversized presentation, packed with black and white photos and illustrations.

Customer Reviews:
Great for certification, not very practical though.......2007-09-17
Peachpit's "Apple Training Series" is generally an outstanding product line. However, there are two distinct branches to the line: knowledge and certification. This book isn't designed as much to teach you about OS X Server (Tiger edition) as it is to prepare you for a certification exam. Nothing wrong with that, it just not terribly practical for real world operations. While I haven't taken the certifcation exam, I suspect this book prepares you well for the exam since it's the "offical" curriculum of the Apple Training and Cetification program.
Similiar to other test prep books, there are goals and reviews. In particular, the book breaks down the learning into chapters with time estimates, which is helpful in preparing your learning process. The included CD has sample files to go along with the detailed and expanded exercises. The book takes you through the basics of setting up a server start to finish along with giving an overview of the rich feature set found in OS X Server.
Unfortunately, simliar to other test prep books, the book doesn't arm you with the skills necessary to properly maintain and configure a Tiger server in the real world. There is no troubleshooting guide nor much practical advice on do's and don'ts of server setup. After reading this book, I'm relatively confident I could pass the exam, but I do not feel confident I could configure or maintain a Tiger server. Nonetheless, this book is a good first step in learning OS X server. You need no prior knowledge to start using this book and to at least get a test server set up.
Overall this is a good book for beginners and/or persons trying to get certified on OS X server. The book level from Peachpit says "Intermediate/Advanced". I disagree; this is strictly for new users. If you will be maintaining a OS X server, look elsewhere for a support guide. Anyone who's setup a OS X server will be annoyed by this book.
Pros: Clear examples and easy to follow guide for beginners
Cons: No troubleshooting nor practical guidance after initial setup

Passed Apple Certification exam with this book.......2007-02-22
While I have quite a bit of experience with Mac OS X Server 10.4, I still read this book cover-to-cover. It's a great read and you'll always find something you don't know. By reading this, I was easily able to pass Apple's ACTC Certification exam. Save yourself a lot of money and start with this book instead of the formal classes...then if you need more, try the Apple Training classes.
It is what it says it is.......2006-08-26
This book is not perfect, but the harshly negative reviews it's gotten so far are pretty much baseless. This is a book about Mac OS X Server. It is not a book about BIND or Apache or VPNs or any of the countless other services it is possible to run *on* Mac OS X Server. If you want to learn about the specifics of Apple's management utilities or are preparing for the Apple Technical Coordinator certification exams, then this is a fine book. If you know absolutely nothing about networking or server administration and want a book that's going to turn you into a sysadmin overnight, then you should definitely look elsewhere.
good level.......2006-03-25
I read quickly to analize the level.I will use deeply next month. it seems nice, well documented and using plain english.
It analizes intermediate to complex situations.
Useful.
Wished it was twice as thick..........2006-03-23
I wanted more topics in the appendix. This would have made it more of a reference for me. Still a very good book. The server subject is deep and vast so I am pleased overall.
Book Description
The importance of history has been powerfully reaffirmed in recent years by the appearance of major new authors, pathbreaking works, and fresh interpretations of historical events, trends, and methods. Responding to these developments, Roger Chartier engages several of the most influential writers of cultural history whose works have spread far beyond academic audiences to become part of contemporary cultural argument. Challenging the assertion that history is no more than a "fiction-making operation" Chartier examines the relationships between history and fiction and proposes new foundations for establishing history as a specific kind of knowledge.
Michel de Certeau's description of Michel Foucault's writings as "on the edge of the cliff," provides Chartier with an image he finds appropriate not only for Foucault but for many other recent historians--including de Certeau. Exploring the relationships between discursive practices and nondiscursive practices, Chartier examines the "heterology" of de Certeau pursues the "chimera of origin" and the causes of the French Revolution in Foucault's work; and raises four pertinent questions for the metahistory of Hayden White. He follows the work of Louis Marin into the distinctions between interpreting a painting and interpreting a text. And a trio of essays treats the historical sociology of Norbert Elias and his work on power and civility. Throughout, Chartier keeps his focus on historians who have stressed the relations between the products of discourse and social practices.
Customer Reviews:
A must for historians.......2004-05-03
This is a series of essays, reviews, and prefaces written by one of the best cultural historians working today. The themes range from the historiography of the French Revolution, the cultural theory of Michel de Certeau, Michel Foucault on temporality and history,Pierre Bourdieu's sociology, and the author's prefaces to the French editions of Norbert Elias' sociological works. This book would be of interest to cultural historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and anyone interested in general historiographical questions. Chartier brings a sober, sophisticated understanding of French theory and the practice of culutral history to each of these topics. His essay on Foucault is one of the best I've read, and the first to appreciate the significance of Foucault, Bourdieu, and de Certeau for the practice of cultural and intellectual history. These themes are of course difficult, and this book is probably not appropriate for those unfamiliar with these debates.
A Chore.......2001-10-01
This book was assigned to my graduate historiography class a few years ago and I found it to be the most frustrating book I've ever tried to read ("tried" being the operative word). Most of the sentences are so long and complex one must read it over and over again and almost word by word to get some meaning from it. That presents a difficult task when a student has mountains of other material to read. It is actually a rather short book, but I dreaded the duty of opening it up and mucking through the long, complex sentences. At first I thought it was a problem with translation, but translator Lydia Cochrane explained in her notes on translation that the French version was just as challenging.
The part of the book that I did find interesting was Chartier's discussion of Michel Foucault's views on the use of "origin" in historical works and Foucault's belief that forces in history respond to haphazard conflicts. I remember quoting a 75-word sentence in my term paper (my computer kept warning me of a run-on), since I certainly was unable to paraphrase.
Those readers who have spent decades reading historical works and would welcome the challenge may find something in "On the Edge of the Cliff" on which to chew. Others, like myself, who are not prepared for such an effort and who believe that clarity in presenting one's ideas is almost as important as the ideas themselves will probably want to jump off a cliff after opening this book.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to understand and true to form.......2005-09-16
A good read--definately worth the time.
For starters, this book is a good pick for both network security experts and the casual reader. The author does an excellent job of analyzing criminal techniques and common flaws in today's computer systems. Whether you're trying to secure a network or gain a better understanding of "hackers" in the news, this book does a good job.
Because the subject matter is abstract, it holds up very well several years after the original printing. The author added a foreward to the book a few months after the 9/11 incident that explains how the principles hold true. The book does not cover specific vulnerabilities--those change over time. Rather, it recognizes patterns and similarities in bad security and talks about the prevention, detection, and reaction of secuirty violations.
Good Historical Writing.......2001-11-13
Excellent book. Well organized and, as one reviewer put it below, comprehensive. That is, it doesn't just concentrate on the West -- which, for the period concerned, largely means the western part of the European peninsula. Do I need to say more?
Great reference........2001-09-26
I bought this book while browsing at a Barnes and Noble. First of all, it's a great world-wide reference, looking at the history of *all* the inhabited continents, not just Europe. Though I am Euro-American, I am interested in what was going on outside of my ancestral background, in order to get the full context of mans' life on earth.
The writing is clear, informative, interesting, and concise. Easy to read. Can't ask for anything more. And the depth is just right, considering that I am not a history major.
And, you may laugh, but I love the way it's made, the construciton of it. Very light. Light paper in a well made paperback. I detest heavy-weighted books, which are no good for reading in bed or lying on a couch. In fact, I'm so pleased with it, I'm here at Amazon to buy its companion history, 'from 1500', before it goes out of print or something.
A Good Overview.......2000-03-31
This book is a good overview of World History. I had to purchase it for a college class ten years ago--I loved it and have kept it on hand ever since. It is factual and to-the-point, but is written well. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to see history in context...
