Book Description
A fascinating account of the life of one of the great early Victorian railway contractors. Brassey built railway systems not only throughout the British Isles but all over Europe and into Russia, and as far abroad as India, Australia, Canada and South America. Apart from its interest as the biography of an extraordinary man, the book contains much valuable information on management methods, costs and wages. Originally published in 1872.
Sir Arthur Helps was a close friend of Queen Victoria, who very soon learned to greatly appreciate his powers of mind, his intuition and discernment, his skill in the analysis of character, and his masterful grasp of business exigencies. Helps counsels with a strength, clearness and directness which leaves little doubt or uncertainty in the mind of the reader. This collection of his correspondence, which covers a period from 1829-75, is one chiefly of letters bearing upon current politics and literature. Helps was also a novelist.

Great piece of American sports nostalgia!.......1997-09-30
I grew up listening by transistor radio to Bob Wolff broadcast the old Washington Senators baseball games. Always colorful, innovative and multi-faceted, he brings back to life countless memories of some of sports most glorious moments, as well as some humorous ones which never went reported. His book is a throwback to sports of a simpler and purer era, before the days of multi-million dollar contracts and superstar scandals. Those who remember that time will revel in the reminicences of the author's accounts, and those who weren't will learn of sports as they once were...and as they will never be again. Bob Wolff has been duly recognized as a member of Baseball's Hall of Fame, and his book is a record of his legacy to today's sports broadcaster and fan. For anyone who truly loves sports, we owe him a debt of gratitude.

Book Description
Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares is a savvy look at the wide range of adaptations, spin-offs, and citations of Shakespeare's plays in 1990s popular culture. What does it say about our culture when Shakespearean references turn up in television episodes of The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island, films such as In and Out and My Own Private Idaho, and hardcore porn adaptations of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet? Burt reads the reception of these often quite bad replays in relation to contemporary youth culture and the "queering" of Shakespeare.
Customer Reviews:
Witty and moving analysis of Shakespeare's fate in media.......2003-06-26
One doesn't usually expect to find oneself laughing when reading a book of criticism written by an academic, much less a book on Shakespeare. But Burt's book is frequently just that, funny to the point of making me laugh out loud. Burt has a refreshingly off-beat sense of humor, and the materials he has discovered--such as an adult movie version of Hamlet--aer themselves often hilarious as well, though not always intentionally so. But far from being just a laugh riot, the book is also a serious, critically sophisticated analysis of Shakespeare's fate incontemporary mass media, where much of hte lnagugae is cut or confined to well-known quotations. Burt's final chapter on films about teaching Shakespeare is quite moving, and Burt has the courage to raise difficult questions without pretending he is able to answer them. He is right to think that the questions are more important than the answers. Burt is to be congratulated for writing his book in a clear and engaging prose style without sacrificing the complexity of his thought.
Pioneering book.......2003-05-28
In his wonderful and fascinating book Unspeakable ShaXXXspeares, Richard Burt, the leading scholar of Shakespeare and film studies, pioneers research into the manifold ways Shakespeare enters into American popular culture. Concentrating mostly on film but attending as well to television sit-coms, Burt offers penetrating insight into everything from mainstream adaptations of Shakespeare to "low" spin-offs in which Shakespeare's language almost entirely disappears. Burt explores both what film and mass media have done to Shakespeare and also what Shakespeare enables our culture to do trhough film and other electronic media. Readers intersted in this book will be happy to know that Burt has since edited a related collection entitled Shakespeare After Mass Media and has co-edited Shakespeare, the Movie II.
On the Money.......2001-12-20
Whatever you think about Shakespeare, it is impossible not to agree with the points Burt makes in this book. His analysis is right on the money and you will never be able to look at Shakespearean movies or literature in the same way. A fantastic book and a must read.
Accessible and profound work of cultural criticism.......2001-11-22
One of the many strengths of Burt's truly excellent book is that it not only discusses Shakespeare adaptations but uses Shakespeare, or of ShaXXXspeares, to discuss post-war American popular culture. Burt's theory of the loser as critic has ramifications for all criticism, not just Shakespeare. This is a profound, original, and engaging book.
A wonderful find!.......2001-11-20
I happened to be doing research for my thesis on Shakespeare in the university library and, while looking for other books, I was intrigued by the three XXXs in the title of Burt's book on the shelf, so I pulled it off and looked through it. What a daring work of cultural criticism! When I saw the chapters on Shakespeare porn, I marvelled both at the courage of the man to write such a book and how at the publisher who took it on. Of course, I check it out and read it. I especially was drawn to the chapter on action films and Burt's point that while the films cannibalize others, no one in the films ever eats; the characters are anorexic. The book is full of similarly wonderful insights. I am a cinephile, and very much appreciated Burt's quite hip approach to ShaXXXspeare. Now, it's back to those other, rather staid books of Shakespeare criticism, I was orginally looking for.

Customer Reviews:
good intro, one flaw.......2007-07-11
good, basic intro to a professional tool. while it might not "be for beginners" as some have said, neither is after effects. the one problem i have with the book is that several of the lessons require effects that only come bundled with the Pro edition of AE7. given that the title of the book does not mention Pro, the authors should probably have taken more care to avoid using features limited to the Pro edition.
Average Tutorial from Adobe.......2007-04-05
Actually this is about what I expected from Adobe. It's a basic instruction book for After Effects 7 that shows a beginner some of the mechanics of the program. The lessons pull the reader through the steps needed to produce the required results without much explanation.
As another reviewer noted, the examples aren't that good. Watching the sample movies before doing the lessons, you find yourself saying "And why would I want to produce something like that?" Or maybe "It takes over an hour just for that 10 second cheezy cartoon?"
After Effects is an extremely powerful program that's used by many professionals in countless video applications. Watch any TV program and you'll surely see the results of what After Effects can do. Much additional instruction beyond this official training book from Adobe, that you have to pay extra for, is obviously required to get the most out of After Effects.
I just got 2 more books,"After Effects" by Fahs & Weinman and "Creative After Effects" by Taylor. I'll see how they compare with Adobe's book.
Update: After reading "Creative After Effects" by Angie Taylor, this Adobe Classroom in a Book looks like a Pulitzer prize winner in comparison. Don't even think about wasting your time on Taylor's so-called "book".
A must-have if you own After Effects!!!!.......2007-04-01
I sat for a solid week trying to make sense out of the confusing owner's manual for After Effects, and never got anywhere. After just the first "lesson" in this book, I already knew my way around in AE smoothly, and then with each lesson, I was accelerating rapidly with knowledge. The official AE owner's manual will definitely be tossed into a dark corner for a long time.... this Classroom In A Book should be listed as a manditory requirement for learning how to use AE. It is very easy to understand and takes you through some very cool steps to help you create videos like the pros. Without this book, I would still have no clue as to how to function inside AE.....If you want to learn how to use AE in a flash, then you HAVE to buy this book!!!!! I recommend it 100%!!!!!
Good~.......2007-03-19
Haven't used the CD yet but book arrived in a timely matter and in good shape. Thanks

I had a project that I needed to start and finish in a couple of weeks. I had trouble learning it until I received this book. Very helpful. My only issue is with DHL. I paid for 24 hour service and got it in about four work days.

Book Description
An eminently readable and compact history of human society from the Stone Age to the present.
James C. Davis takes us on a journey to ancient times, telling how peoples of the world settled down and founded cities, conquered neighbours and established religions. The journey continues over the course of history, when humankind fought two nearly global wars and journeyed into space.
Davis's account is swift and clear, never dull or dry. He lightens it with pungent anecdotes and witty quotes. Although this compact volume may not be hard to pick up, it's definitely hard to put it down.
Though we live in an age of many doubts, James C. Davis thinks we humans are advancing. As The Human Story ends, he concludes, 'The world's still cruel; that's understood/ But once was worse. So far so good.'

Has there ever been a history of the world as readable as this?
In
The Human Story, James C. Davis takes us on a journey to ancient times, telling how peoples of the world settled down and founded cities, conquered neighbors, and established religions, and continues over the course of history, when they fought two nearly global wars and journeyed into space.
Davis's account is swift and clear, never dull or dry. He lightens it with pungent anecdotes and witty quotes. Although this compact volume may not be hard to pick up, it's definitely hard to put down.
For example, on the death of Alexander the Great, who in a decade had never lost a single battle, and who had staked out an empire that spanned the entire Near East and Egypt, Davis writes: ""When they heard how ill he was, the king's devoted troops insisted on seeing him. He couldn't speak, but as his soldiers -- every one -- filed by in silence, Alexander's eyes uttered his farewells. He died in June 323
B.C., at the ripe old age of thirty-two.""
In similar fashion Davis recounts Russia's triumph in the space race as it happened on an autumn night in 1957: ""A bugle sounded, flames erupted, and with a roar like rolling thunder, Russia's rocket lifted off. It bore aloft the earth's first artificial satellite, a shiny sphere the size of a basketball. Its name was Sputnik, meaning 'companion' or 'fellow traveler' (through space). The watchers shouted, 'Off. She's off. Our baby's off!' Some danced; others kissed and waved their arms.""
Though we live in an age of many doubts, James C. Davis thinks we humans are advancing. As
The Human Story ends, he concludes, ""The world's still cruel; that's understood, / But once was worse. So far so good.""

Customer Reviews:
accessible, engaging history of humanity.......2007-05-02
The author has attempted something extraordinary: to tell the history of humanity in just a little over 400 pages. He pulls it off. This book is charmingly written but very smart and sensible in its judgments. It is totally free of academic jargon, but it is based on a vast knowledge of history. Davis strikes just the right balance on nearly every issue. This is a book that should be in every school library and on every educated reader's bookshelf.
Entertaining and Stimulating.......2006-05-01
Covering the human story from one hundred thousand years ago to modern times is a daunting task. The author succeeds in providing an entertaining and stimulating tour of the major world events in a somewhat informal but engaging style. While the work would have benefited from tighter editing and more rigorous proofreading it still is a very good read.
Wonderful Overview of History.......2006-01-11
I slept through the one world history class that I was required to take in high school so this book was perfect for me. It is written in an entertaining, light-hearted fashion which kept my interest from beginning to end. It would be impossible to describe, in depth, 4000+ years of history, but this book does a great job in giving an overview of the major historical events that shaped our world today in a mere 450 pages. I highly recommend this book to those that are history-illiterate and want to understand how we arrived where we are.
Great overview for associating major timelines.......2005-11-06
I really enjoyed this book for one major reason - it really helped me put major historical events in context with the global timeline.
Like many people, I have learned history generally in isolated segments. For instance, I learned the Eurpean history & Asian history independently.
By going through the years quickly but with subject-related chapters, this book helped me put a lot of it together in my head in a useful way.
This is not the book you would buy if you only want buy one history book. This is a book you buy to bring a lot of bits of knowledge together.
Excellent Overview.......2005-09-06
For those who didn't pay any attention in your world history classes and are looking for an overview, this is a great option. I was looking for a book that would introduce me to the people of the past and then allow me, from that intro, to choose what I'm most interested in and then dig deeper (through other books). This book does just that, and it does it at a high enough level that you don't get bogged down or lose interest half way through. I read sections out of the 20-30 odd World History books at Barnes and Noble, and this was one of the few that didn't just list out fact after fact. Another idea, is to purchase the Guide to the Mona Lisa as well and read them together - section by section - from this you'll be able to get a high-level view of art and history.

Book Description
Rooted in a period of vigorous exploration and colonialism, The Island Race is an innovative study of the issues of nation, gender and identity.
In the rapidly expanding eighteenth-century world, English perceptions of origin and heritage became altered--the question of national identity emerging as a particularly troubled and ambiguous issue. Wilson bases her analysis on a wide range of case studies drawn both from Britain and across the Atlantic and Pacific worlds. Creating a colorful and original colonial landscape, she considers topics such as sodomy, theatre, masculinity, the symbolism of Britannia and the role of women in war. Wilson shows the far-reaching implications that colonial power and expansion had upon the English people's sense of self, and argues that the vaunted singularity of English culture was in fact constituted by the bodies, practices and exchanges of peoples across the globe.
The Island Race provides the reader with a new kind of history-innovative, readable and rich in historical imagination and theoretical sophistication, it will demonstrate how culture travels, identity is transformed and the eighteenth century is still with us.
Customer Reviews:
Thrilling History.......2005-12-03
Kathleen Wilson is undoubtedly the most exciting British historian writing today and I believe that she is in fact a pioneer in post-colonial imperial history. This book explores the way that imperialism impacted British national identity in perceptive ways using non-traditional sources. It's a very innovative study that emphasizes the importance of gender and sexuality in the formation of eighteenth century British national identity. She is also a very gifted and witty writer.
I don't ordinarily review all the scholarly books I read on Amazon because I sort of feel that people are probably assigned such books or "have" to read them for research purposes (I don't really think that people buy books like Said's "Orientalism" or Anderson's "Imagined Communities" based on what people write on these reviews) and so advertising them or, alternatively, warning readers about them is somewhat gratuitous. However, this book seemed to generate some real interest (judging from the reviews its gotten) and I just wanted to say that if you are a fledgling British historian and you don't read this book it's at your own peril.
Cannadine.......2004-03-10
For those of you not aware, Cannadine is someone who romanticizes the British Empire and is nolstalgic for it! I think it's highly telling that those who criticize Wilson call in an Anglophile colonial apologist to compare her unfavorably to. Apparently, some will never get over the sunset of the British empire, or accept the very real negative affects of British imperialism. Wilson's book is deeply reliant on archives and real historical research. How anyone can contend that it isn't "historical" is beyond me, unless real critique isn't their goal, they just want to take slams at ANYONE who doesn't sing the praises of the white man's burden.
Not the best.......2004-03-07
I read parts of this book for a graduate course side by side with David Cannadine's "Ornamentalism." There's no comparison--Cannadine's book is superb and deeply engaged with the history. Wilson's is MUCH more sensationalist and much less historical.
Civilization in Scare Quotes.......2004-03-04
I have to respond to the poster who had a problem with my use of "scare quotes" around civilization and used me as evidence that eighteenth-century historical discussions were in a sorry state. I used quotes because the dictionary definition of "civilization" is "those who have reached a high level of social organization".
If the reader is familiar with eighteenth-century sources, he or she would know that I was putting it in quotes to make the point that I was not agreeing with the dominant eighteenth-century Western European view that their "civilization" was superior to the "savagery" of non-whites. I don't know why using quotes to distance myself from that view is controversial unless this reader is denying high levels of social advancement to the highly sophisticated social structures of non-Europeans of the eighteenth-century.
Anyone remotely familiar with the intellectual history of the past twenty years would know that there is agreement among historians that "civilization" is a subjected, loaded, and constructed term meaning different things to different people and usually employed in the service of imperialism e.g., the war w/ Iraq is a "a clash of civilizations": Some reviewers are clearly more interested in their own ideological agenda than making any real comments about Wilson's work, and although I've taken the time to engage with their dubious comments, I have to say that the real star remains the book, which was widely acclaimed as the most innovative work being done about the eighteenth-century at the present time, despite the reader's assertion that its importance has been exaggerated.
Furthermore, it IS a beautifully written book, which is a subjective opinion, despite what the reader authoritatively and patronizingly asserted about its "workmanlike" prose. I hardly think that anyone having actually read the book could possibly call this "workmanlike": (p. 168) The scandalous woman, rebel and outcast, had nevertheless achieved success by eighteenth-century standards, within the territorial and imaginative space of the British West Indies. Her mobility and survival depended upon the ebbs and flows of the Atlantic interculture, where reputation was a commodity, opportunism a virtue and self-fashioning a necessity, a transculture whose inventions, practices and identities did not begin and end at national borders."
How does that measure up to the utilitarian, boring, prosaic implications of calling Wilson's writing "workmanlike" prose? I suggest further posts actually talk about the book's issues, and I apologize that I didn't, but I felt compelled to respond to some of the comments going around.
Divisive.......2004-03-02
Neither "Stony Brook," "New Haven," "Los Angeles," nor "Marseilles" reviewers seem to have this book quite right. It's far too thoughtful to be dismissed as "trendy" or "prolix," yet it hardly breaks entirely new ground, much less "revolutionizes," or "blows the lid off" the historical litterature up till now. It's an intelligent book because it rexamines original sources in light of contemporary concerns. Wilson's style of writing may be off-putting to non-historians, but anyone accustomed to the alternatively leaden and pretentious style of so many historians, will find Wilson's writing something of a relief (although calling her workmanlike prose beautiful is a bit bizarre).
These divergent reviews tell us a lot about the lamentable state of eighteenth century studies, marked on the one side by those who disregard anything that includes gender as politically correct, and on the other by those who put the word civilization in scare quotes!

Book Description
Written in an accessible style, this book facilitates a deep understanding of the Rasch model. Authors Bond and Fox review the crucial properties of the Rasch model and demonstrate its use with a wide range of examples including the measurement of educational achievement, human development, attitudes, and medical rehabilitation. A glossary and numerous illustrations further aid the reader's understanding. The authors demonstrate how to apply Rasch analysis and prepare readers to perform their own analyses and interpret the results.
Updated throughout, highlights of the Second Edition include:
*a new CD that features an introductory version of the latest Winsteps program and the data files for the book’s examples, preprogrammed to run using Winsteps;
*a new chapter on invariance that highlights the parallels between physical and human science measurement;
*a new appendix on analyzing data to help those new to Rasch analysis;
*more explanation of the key concepts and item characteristic curves;
*a new empirical example with data sets demonstrates the many facets of the Rasch model and other new examples; and
*an increased focus on issues related to unidimensionality, multidimensionality, and the Rasch factor analysis of residuals.
Applying the Rasch Model is intended for researchers and practitioners in psychology, especially developmental psychologists, education, health care, medical rehabilitation, business, government, and those interested in measuring attitude, ability, and/or performance. The book is an excellent text for use in courses on advanced research methods, measurement, or quantitative analysis. Significant knowledge of statistics is not required.

In lieu of anything better.......2007-05-11
This is a reasonable introduction to some aspects of Rasch modeling that could stand considerable improvement come, as almost certainly there will, a third edition.
Reading the book is an annoyance because of the very large numbers of copy editing mistakes. For example, the text in the first paragraph on page 249 makes reference to information in a figure that is clearly not in the figure referred to. The table on page 245 is printed the wrong way, with tabs between decimal points and the figures on the right, making it seem as if, for example, the item estimate for the item in question is an absurd 33.0 or even 330. The text is full of such mistakes. Practically speaking, one might argue that such printing errors are actually useful to those who wish to understand the text, inasmuch as the ability to notice that such mistakes are mistakes functions as a check on the depth of one's understanding. On the other hand, I fear to think what those with no background in Rasch models would make of the page 245 table.
Rasch models are (at least in the circles I move in) notorious for the difficulty of explanitory texts, this despite the simplicity of the concepts involved. (Rasch models in testing, for example, are much simplier than those for traditional true-score treatments of testing, but the true-score tradition abounds with clear writers who aim for and hit audiences of novices.)
This book does a little to make Rasch model concepts more clear to less-initiated readers, but the tone of the text often flips between clarity, with all new concepts explained clearly, and academic prose for the initiated only (as in the discussion of residuals interpretation). Likewise, though the text includes much data from actual tests or research projects, there is a lack of any actual items or item stems from the tests or research from which the examples are drawn. The invented examples here (e.g., with Chapter 7, on rating scale design) are poorly thought out and do not betray familiarity with relevant literature.
The organization of the text could be improved as well. Although the included glossory is an aid, keeping topic for the most part in one place in the book would make it much more useful for beginners: information on fit interpretation, for example, is spread throughout the text, with information that would illuminate introductory writing about fit being delayed until Chapter 12.
Criticisms aside, however, "Applying the Rasch Model" is fun to read (at least for those somewhat familiar with probabilistic models in academia), and I do not know of a better introduction in print. On the other hand, I have not kept up with the literature of late, so perhaps there is something better than this.
What's new in 2nd Edition.......2007-04-08
2nd Ed. = 314 pages + (refs and front material); 1st Ed.= 234 pages + (refs and front material).
Updated throughout, highlights of the Second Edition include:
Additional 80 pages of text; More than 25% of the rest rewritten.
A new CD that features Bond&FoxSteps, a full-size introductory version of the latest Winsteps program; all the data files for the book's examples, preprogrammed to run using Winsteps with built-in .pdfs of step by step tutorials for each B&F example. Minifac, data set and Facets example.
A new chapter (#5) on invariance that highlights the parallels between physical and human science measurement.
A new empirical example demonstrates the Many Facets Rasch model.
An increased focus on issues related to unidimensionality, multidimensionality, and Rasch factor analysis of residuals.
New examples using thermometry and the measurement of sport performances, and the growing use of student satisfaction data in university and college reviews.
A new appendix on analyzing data to help those new to Rasch analysis get started.
More explanation of the key concepts and of item characteristic curves make the text easier to follow.

Book Description
Trevor Bond has worked with leading Rasch theoreticians for more than 15 years, advising developmentalists and teachers on how to conduct and interpret Rasch analyses of their own data.
The goals of this authored volume are:
*to present an accessible overview of the basic properties and principles of Rasch analysis, that does not require a sophisticated statistical background;
*to demonstrate how Rasch analysis can be applied to generic problems encountered by psychologists and educators; and
*to prepare readers for performing their own analyses and interpreting the results.
This book is ideal for researchers in the human sciences interested in learning how to implement the Rasch model with their own data.
Customer Reviews:
Great primary reference.......2006-08-15
This is a great primary reference work. It has a few amusing bits of Classical Test Theory-bashing polemic, which seem both pointless and de rigeur for IRT practitioners. In almost all other aspects, however, this is a well thought-out and highly useful primer for anyone looking to get up-to-speed quickly on using IRT methods to expand and improve their measurement strategies.
Excellent Introduction to the Rasch Model.......2002-08-03
An excellent contribution to theory and practice. The book is a lucid introduction to the one-parameter IRT methodology that is extremely well-written.
Clear, Concise and Fun!.......2001-06-28
This is a book which takes a daunting subject and treats it in such a fashion that immediately draws the most novice researcher to the topic. The authors take their subject seriously, and take themselves not seriously at all. The result is that rare combination of the "how-to" technical aspects of Rasch Analysis with an entertaining and informative discussion of the theoretical basis of the subject. An enjoyable read, and filled with helpful and useful information. A must for the professional library of any researcher!
Rasch Modeling for Mere Mortals.......2001-05-15
I expected this book to be another barely undestandable book on Rasch-type model fitting, written by authors who's principle purpose is first to dazzle readers, then discourage them with mysterious statistical spells and mathmatical enchantments. I was wrong. This is a highly readable book which contains powerful arguments for the application and utility of the the Rasch model. The content is rational, and it's presentation lucid. After a few pages it becomes surprisingly clear these authors actually like their subject and want to share it with others!
If the statistically challenged wish to learn more about a very important new direction in measurement, and can afford only one text, this should be the book.
