    Book Description

Millionaires complaining to billionaires about more millions - too often that’s how the general public perceives baseball players. When discussions of strikes don’t involve a box from the knees to the shoulders, the game has strayed too far from its roots.

Throwbacks: Old-School Baseball Players in Today's Game celebrates those roots and highlights those players today who play the game the same way our parents and grandparents watched it played. It’s an ode to those who play hurt, who play smart, who go all out, who get blood and sweat and dirt on their uniforms and still treat their teammates and fans—and the game—with respect. To the hurlers, the hitters, the scrappers, and even the role players, you don’t have to be a star to be “old-school”; you just have to know how to play the game right.

George Castle focuses on a dozen current players who best personify the spirit of baseball’s past. These players take their original talent—be it smarts, hustle, firepower, or muscle—and give it all for their team. While Kerry Wood blows people away with his fastball, Mike Morgan does whatever he’s asked to stay in the game he loves. As Jim Thome muscles balls over the fence, Ellis Burks happily contributes the little things that can mean the difference between winning and losing.

In addition to talking to the throwbacks themselves, Castle interviewed past and current teammates, opponents, and even announcers to get an insider’s view of what drives them. It’s one thing for Castle to call them old-school and quite another when the compliment comes from contemporaries. Come read about some of the best of what baseball has to offer—both on and off the field.

4 out of 5 stars Baseball knowledge at its' best.......2006-01-30

George Castle is truly one of the most knowledgeable baseball writers on the scene today. In this book, Castle relies on his knowledge to hand select 12 of today's players, who he feels best personify the 'old school' mentality. Castle does not go down the easy route of picking only stars, although all of his subjects are certainly big name players.
The book features quotes from each player along with thoughts from their peers. Castle easily and interestingly makes his case for each player. It is hard to argue with his choice or his reasoning.
The reader gets to see sides of each player not generally seen by the public. The reader gets to know and appreciate the players as well.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, GOOD stories about baseball!!.......2003-07-02

Don't you hate reading the sports page and seeing all the jerks in sports being highlighted? All the schmucks who make it hard to raise your head and say "I'm a baseball fan"??

If you're like me and hate to see the game sullied, read this. A breath of fresh air! Talks about the GOOD guys in the game, the ones who play it RIGHT. For love of the game, not just payola.

My dad always complained that the players today don't appreciate the game they way his players did. All that "back in my day" stuff. lol. Well, he changed his tune after I gave him this book for Father's Day. We're going to the ballpark whenever we can now, especially if one of the players in the book is in town.

I can't recommend this book enough if you're tired of having America's pasttime desicrated so often. Learn who the good guys are, and learn to celebrate those who play the game right. Great book!

      Book Description

In this irreverent, unsparing, and witty look at our cultural obsession with blonde, Natalia Ilyin shows us that our apparently modern fixation has truly primeval roots. Highlighting cultural criticism with personal experience, she cites ancient myths, Hollywood iconography, and the daily assault of advertising to reveal why the allure of being a blonde has crossed the boundaries of ethnicity, economics, and age. In essence, she shows us the difference between simply having blonde hair and being a blonde.

5 out of 5 stars The Temple of the Blonde Goddess.......2006-06-12

The 70's and 80's were saturated and soaked in fashion images that depicted the only beauty was the flaxen-kind. This social commentary explains a bit why. Blondes are like diamonds, because they are rare they are treated in the same kind of esteem. However, one trip to Scandinavia with my black hair, made me feel like a blonde. It's all a frame of reference. When you stand out in the crowd, you just can't avoid getting noticed. In a sea of nordic goddesses with their golden locks, my raven curls caught many blue-eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Myth, Life, and Hair.......2003-09-20

My wife's blonde. My 57 year-old mother just dyed her once-brunette Italian coif blonde. I needed to read this book, and so do you. Ilyin covers not only fashion and consumer culture, she dips into myth, symbolism, history, and gender. What made this enjoyable was the spin placed on her personal anecdotes. She looks back with a critical eye and, it's an eye capable of seeing beneath the surface. Taking on popular culture, religion, and (of course) hair coloring, Ilyin shows us that appearances can sometimes be deceiving. And most of the time, they simply are.

4 out of 5 stars Creative and explorative.......2003-07-29

Ilyin does a fabulous job of drawing the pictures of the various types of blondes. She helps the reader to see that blonde alone is just a color but the wearer of the blonde makes the blonde.

Sometimes it seems as though she digs too hard to find evidence and examples. Most of the time she effectively draws compelling conclusions. I am able to see blondes through more complex filters now, and in fact with a bit less mystique. That may or may not have been her objective with the book, but nonetheless, it made some impact.

4 out of 5 stars What does Ilyin make of Catherine Zeta-Jones?.......2001-08-10

First of all, I do not believe that was really Ilyin who posted here. Ilyin's intelligence level comes across brilliantly in the book. I do not believe the real Ilyin would have said some of those things, much less misspelled "disdainful."

Now. The passage that struck me the most in the book was when Ilyin was telling about going back to school at a ritzy graduate school and how real education rearranges your mind. Then she "turned the kleig lights of [her] education" on blondeness. I am glad she did. But aside from the topic of the book, that one passage made me want to get more education.

I think it is a scholarly book. That was fascinating about the bounty goddesses (Summer Wheat and California Sun.)

I wonder if stunning brunettes like Catherine Zeta-Jones symbolize anything at all? Or are they, too, thought to be associated with (I guess) impurity? As a brunette, I have picked up on the association of blondes with purity even though it didn't seem fair (if by implication brunettes are associated with impurity, and I think in my experience we are.) There isn't a thing I can do about it; much less women of color. I look at old Rita Coolidge albums and I can't help it; the woman was *beautiful.* I am not criticizing Ilyin, but the culture that wouldn't recognize the beauty of a Cher or Rita Coolidge if they came along today. Ilyin explains why. It isn't fair, but at least Ilyin acknowledges that I didn't make this up in my head.

5 out of 5 stars Brunette Like Me.......2000-08-13

Natalia Ilyin has written a masterful little book, filled with insights on the blond archetype in our culture, brilliant descriptions of blond subtypes (the "Armpiece Blond" and the Martha Stewart segments are hilarious), and warm memoirs of her own blond childhood to adulthood.

As a brunette with a California blond daughter, and an East Coast mother who had a blond childhood but elected to grow out of it, I was intrigued to find every blond I've known (practically) described almost flawlessly in this little book. The value we place on golden hair is obvious in this society. But as we become more diverse, and as people with darker hair and skin become more dominant, the value may change. I recently had a compliment from an African-American woman who admired my summer tan. "But you're not dark enough," she added.

It would be interesting to have had a footnote, at least, from the author with some comment about women of color. I wonder, will the value change enough as our races merge so that blond eventually looses some of its mystique.

"Blond Like Me" is a quick read of interest to both scholars and casual readers. It should be taken seriously by reviewers and social commentators.

An exceptional guide for the novice and professional.

      2 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2003-01-02

Being a national floral design teacher and international competitor, I asked for this book as a Christmas present. I was intrigued with the title, "A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design." The jacket promised that it was "directed toward the advanced designer." It's not.
The book has lovely photography of plant materials, some taken in the naturally beautiful surroundings of Filoli. It also has some good botanically-oriented illustrations. However, the subject matter and designs are definitely for a beginner.

In 24 easy-to-follow lessons, Microsoft Visual Basic Professional 6.0: Step by Step covers all of the fundamentals of programming with VB6. The book breaks lessons down into clearly defined steps and concise discussions that assist in creating demonstrative sample programs.

A companion CD-ROM contains 84 projects, organized into 24 folders to match the chapters in the book, plus an extras folder. The sheer number of projects and abundance of source code provide a valuable resource that will help beginning programmers get started quickly.

Though it contains a complete introduction, the book avoids or simply briefs on some advanced topics like multiple document interface (which, of course, advanced programmers would need to be familiar with, though it receives only a one-page sidebar).

The discussion of object linking and embedding, while a tad Microsoft Office-centric, adequately introduces and explains a potentially difficult subject. The book also contains lessons on current topics, including DHTML and file transfer, a pleasant surprise as Richter gives these topics their due.

I'm only on page 78, and already I can tell that I'm going to enjoy and learn from this book. Not being familiar with Mr. Halvorson's work, I was a little leary when I noticed that this book was published by Microsoft Press. Dreading page after page of nearly non-human jargon and wording, I was most pleasantly surprised when I began my journey through the easy-to-read pages. If you can follow a recipe, you can learn from this book. Heck, even if you can't follow a recipe, you can still learn, as long as you're willing to do the exercises. Being a beginner in the programming field, I can heartily recommend Microsoft's and Mr. Halvorson's version of VB 6.0 training.

My programing background was in C++, Pascal, and Delphi, so when I got a new job and had to learn VB 6.0 I scrambled to find a book that could teach me the fundamentals. I can honestly say that after reading this book in two weeks I learned VB 6.0. Great book for developers who are beggining or just want to refresh their knowlegh in VB 6.0, a must have.

Legendary scholar-activist W.E.B. Du Bois labored to complete an "Encyclopedia Africana" before his death in 1963. Just over 35 years later, two Harvard educators, Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Ghanaian-born Kwame Anthony Appiah, have brought Du Bois' intellectual dream to life in Africana, the most complete and comprehensive record of the Pan-African diaspora compiled into one volume. With over two million words and 3,500 entries from more than 220 contributors, Appiah and Gates sought, as they put it, to "give a sense of the wide diversity of peoples, cultures, and traditions that we know about Africa in historical times, a feel for the environment in which that history was lived, and a broad outline of the contributions of people of African descent, especially in the Americas, but, more generally, around the world." To fulfill this aim, they consider biographical, political, artistic, economic, historical, and geographical data; a brief sampling of topics includes "Food in African-American Culture," "Creolized Musical Instruments of the Caribbean," and "Anthropology in Africa." The section on Africa fills about two thirds of the book, loaded with invaluable information--from the ethnic and colonial factors that contributed to violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Eritrea, and Sierra Leone to the educational, linguistic, and social advances in Tanzania, Gabon, and South Africa. The legacies of the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe are also presented in great detail. The encyclopedia also contains documented evidence of African-derived peoples in Asia, including the exploits of Malik Ambar, who arrived in India from Ethiopia as a result of the East Indian slave trade.

Turning to the Western Hemisphere, Africana skillfully and succinctly synopsizes the lives and achievements of a multitude of African Americans, from 18th-century inventor-astronomer Benjamin Banneker to late-20th-century heroes like Colin Powell, Tiger Woods, and astronaut Mae Jemison. You'll learn about the little-considered black presence in Canada; Africana also uncovers hidden pockets of black culture in surprising places like Chile, Paraguay, and Argentina (where the Negro population, we discover, was reduced by a process of miscegenation known as blanqueamiento, or whitening). The upper-crust veneer of the Argentine tango is peeled away, revealing the dance's roots in the rhythmic innovations of 19th-century Afro-Argentines. With all of the aforementioned headings and topics, however, it's the special essays that best detail the treasure chest of scholarship of Africana. Robin Kelley examines the volatile clash between "Malcolm X and the Black Bourgeoisie"; Thomas Skidmore deconstructs "Race and Class in Brazil" and the myth of "racial democracy"; Mahmood Mamdani, in "Ethnicity in Rwanda," brilliantly decodes the complex and maddening colonial manipulations that erupted in genocide and made the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups "more political than cultural identities ... one is power and the other is subject."

A splendidly packaged reference work that will adorn libraries and homes for years to come, Africana defines the black experience in the same sweeping way that the Encyclopedia Britannica defined Euro-American civilization. More importantly for young readers, the magnificent collection shows that Africans and the continent's descendants are a truly global people who have made tremendous contributions to human civilization. --Eugene Holley Jr.

        Book Description

Ninety years after W.E.B. Du Bois first articulated the need for "the equivalent of a black Encyclopedia Britannica," Kwame Anthony Appiah and Henry Louis Gates Jr., realized his vision by publishing Africana: The Encyclopedia of the African and African American Experience in 1999. This new, greatly expanded edition of the original work broadens the foundation provided by Africana. Including more than one million new words, Africana has been completely updated and revised. New entries on African kingdoms have been added, bibliographies now accompany most articles, and the encyclopedia's coverage of the African diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean has been expanded, transforming the set into the most authoritative research and scholarly reference set on the African experience ever created. More than 4,000 articles cover prominent individuals, events, trends, places, political movements, art forms, business and trade, religion, ethnic groups, organizations and countries on both sides of the Atlantic. African American history and culture in the present-day United States receive a strong emphasis, but African American history and culture throughout the rest of the Americas and their origins in African itself have an equally strong presence. The articles that make up Africana cover subjects ranging from affirmative action to zydeco and span over four million years from the earlies-known hominids , to Sean "Diddy" Combs. With entries ranging from the African ethnic groups to members of the Congressional Black Caucus, Africana, Second Edition, conveys the history and scope of cultural expression of people of African descent with unprecedented depth.

        5 out of 5 stars A Pan-African Dream Deferred Made Real.......2007-02-18

Scholars Kwame Anthony Appiah and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., paid homage to the great W.E.B. Du Bois' dream to produce an encyclopedia cataloguing the achievements and history of the African Diaspora with the publication in 1999 of the massive 2,095-page AFRICANA: THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE AFRICAN AND AFRICAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. Appiah and Gates duly acknowledge Du Bois' many contributions to history, literature, and the struggle for human rights around the world with: their dedication of the book to him, a regular encyclopedia entry on his achievements, and an "interpretation" by Cornel West of his historical significance.

While AFRICANA is exactly what the title implies, it is also quite a bit more. The book itself represents a major achievement of publishing technology. What Du Bois was not able to accomplish by sheer brain power and intellectual camaraderie, Appiah and Gates achieved through developments in modern communication technology, the computer, and a global team of dedicated intellectuals. The scope of AFRICANA encompasses literature, religion, music, dance, sociology, politics, and, above all, history. In reading the book for pleasure or referencing it for specific topics, one realizes just how much of the African-American and African experience has shaped and defined the greater modern human experience.

3 out of 5 stars No comprehensive Index again!.......2006-05-03

As a university professor in African American Studies, I looked forward to the first edition and bought it. But I was disappointed by the woefully lacking index which is also the case with the 2nd edition.

The five-volume 2nd edition is much easier to handle in terms of weight for each volume than the VERY heavy one volume 1st edition. However, one must wonder how Harvard professors (the editors) could allow a lack of a comprehensive index the second time around.

I bought the 1st edition, but I recommend not buying the 2nd edition. If a future edition has a comprehensive index, I will buy and would urge you to buy, as there is a wealth of information.

As for this (2nd) edition, save your money. Use the volumes at your school/university or community library for good general background information on the African and African American Experience.

4 out of 5 stars Great Coffee Table Book..........2005-09-20

This encyclopedia has plenty of useful information and gives the reader easy access to black history that is not easily researched (especially considering this Eurocentric world we live in). Great to have on your coffee table, exposed, so that guests can have a quick and random look at some black facts and history. This encyclopedia has entries that I would suggest be used to wet your appetite for knowledge and spark your desire to learn more, but not to be used as the sole source of info on any given topic.

4 out of 5 stars Where are the black fraternities and sororities?.......2005-07-24

As the author of The Divine Nine: The History of African American Fraternities and Sororities, I was disappointed to not see any reference to the nine African American Fraternities and Sororities, particularly since W.E.B. DuBois was a member. It seemed like a strange omission for such a comprehensive book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection of primary source material.......1998-08-25

This is an outstanding collection of primary source documents on maroons societies(groups of escaped slaves) throughout the Americas. Reads almost like a piece of fiction. Its a book that should be read cover to cover, not just used as a reference. Valuable book for anyone interested in resistance to slavery. Includes fine introduction. The societies covered in this book range from small bands to large powerful states that survived for generations.
