Iconoclastic Management Book.......2007-07-28
Maverick is a valuable management book because of many of the counterintuitive ("You just couldn't do that!") concepts that Semler actually implements. It's value lies as much in showing "Well, he did just do that" as it does in espousing theory - without the implementation, it would just be too out there...
Some of the counterintuitive:
- Let managers set their own pay. And publish publicly.
- Don't fire people during a strike. Or even take attendence.
- Get rid of extra management (don't "hoard" talent) but fund their new startups if need be.
There's much more, as well as some less controversial advice ("Treat people with dignity" & "Rotate your managers"), but it's best to read the book yourself to get the stories with the advice.
Great Book.......2007-07-01
Very fun and interesting, and we can learn a great deal by using this story as examples and lessons.
Great Book.......2007-02-22
Learn from the experience of this Brazilian entrepreneur that goes against normal business models and managed to sustained in the market with a highly profitable company.
It is fun to read, it is a business story and not a business history or theory. If you like to read about business, if you are interested in opening your company or just if you think you want to learn about others real experiences, read this book!!
The Pursuit of Happiness.......2006-12-25
I read both of Ricardo Semler's books, Maverick! and Seven Day Weekend prior to watching the film about Enron. As a 22 year old dreamer, idealist, pragmatist, and economics student, I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to see the opposite ends of the capitalist spectrum. There's so much knowledge to be learned from the two companies, Enron and Semco. Semco is everything Enron wasn't and is making profit while empowering its employees like no other company on the planet. Business does not have to be analogous to war. Enron's motto was `ask why' and nobody ever did, Ricardo Semler's motto is `ask why' and he hasn't stopped asking. Ricardo Semler will be regarded as the most influential CEO of the 21st century, mark my words.
Believing in others.......2006-11-10
I think the purpose of the book is to illustrate that if we trust each other and we discuss our diferences we generate synergy and cohesion in any group making it easier for its memeber to achieve a given goal.

Book Description
The stories of the people captured on the pages within are anything but ordinary. Like you, they had to start somewhere. But it's not what you do or where you start, but how you do it. It wasn't through maintaining the daily grind (for themselves or others) that got them to the top. It was by building their dreams and doing business in a way that no other had done before them. These Dream Merchants and Howboys live in the Business Icon Hall of Fame in the Sky (ok so maybe one day this will exist). But before they got there they lived somewhere very different. They lived in the land of complete Nutterdom. Retired CEO of Burger King and Fortune turn-around champion, Barry Gibbons, introduces you to this world.
Gibbons brings together some of the most famous names in business today. He takes us on a whirlwind tour of the careers, lives and crazy decisions of nutters - from Walt Disney and Michael Dell to Luciano Benetton and Anita Roddick. All of them made decisions that seemed odd, crazy or downright weird. But they worked. Gibbons, a distinguished madman himself, keeps you hooked with his humour and wit, but never straying from the point of it all. That we can learn from these mavericks. That we can put a little madness into our daily grind. Heck yeh. Steal their ideas! Why should they be famous and not you?
Dream Merchants and Howboys may just be the most unconventional business book ever written and firmly cements Gibbons' reputation as the P.J. O'Rourke of business.

Book Description
On September 11, 1985, with a sell-out crowd of 52,000 fans on hand at = Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium and millions of others watching on = television, Pete Rose collected hit number 4,192 of his career and = passed Ty Cobb as the all-time career hits leader. As he reached first = base, thousands of cameras flashed, his teammates mobbed him, fireworks = exploded and the crowd overwhelmed him with a seven-minute standing = ovation. Rose was on top of the world. Less than four years later, he = would be banned for life from baseball for allegedly betting on major = league games, roundly criticized in the press by both fans and fellow = players, and then convicted for tax evasion.
In 2003, fourteen years after he was made ineligible for the Hall of = Fame, Commissioner Bud Selig took up Rose's application for = reinstatement, igniting once again an intense debate about his legacy = and baseball's long-standing zero-tolerance policy on gambling. This = book gathers the available facts of Rose's life and career, as well as = the scandals he was embroiled in, leaving the reader a more informed = participant in the ongoing discussion.

Customer Reviews:
Good book with less photos than you might expect.......2007-02-28
I really like this book, although I would like to see a lot more photos of cars in a book that focuses on the aesthetic qualities of custom cars. The author successfully argues that kustoms are an art form and then proceeds to analyze various styles of custom cars in relationship to various styles of high art. Good stuff! As for the photos, the most refreshing thing about them is that they are not the same dozen famous kustoms that you've already seen in every other book about custom cars.
Kulture Kids.......2006-03-06
An exhaustive (and exhausting) cross between a fan-rave and a dissertation examining the history and pop-ological intricacies of the brief but very influential rod-and-custom period in America.
Although it is chock full of details and insights into the subject one wonders who exactly it was written for. It often seems much too highbrow and academic for the average kid or gear-head, and I'm sure most academes wouldn't be seen reading anything with so many "purdy pichures". You're left with the impression that it in fact began as a scholarly defense (always check who the publisher is) which, once it appeared to have legs, was tricked out with some chrome and kandy kolors to help find it's way onto American coffee tables.
Still it is well worth having to glean ( for practiced speed readers ) ever more minutia about an era that always spawns endless nostalgia for fans, and eventually, a true sociological and anthropological exegesis for 22 century rustmites.
Street Rodder Hall of Fame Pick.......2002-04-27
Just want to let everybody know that Jerry Weesner of Streetrodder (June 2002) picked Cool Cars, High Art as a Hall of Fame selection with only three other books on the art of customizing.
Blue Collar Art on Parnassus.......2002-04-24
This handsome book is an unusual treatment of its subject for sure. There is a bevy of color photographs to satisfy the aficionado--and to make it an ideal gift for any car-crazy friend. But what I find most striking is the author¹s truly unique take on the car as an art object. Obviously comfortable with the demands of current theoretical discourse, he seems purposefully to prove that the obscurantism that bedevils so much academic prose today is merely self-indulgent. He has helped me grasp much more than just the beauty of the customized car. Readers (and especially teachers in a number of disciplines) will appreciate Prof. DeWitt¹s cunning explications of a Williams poem, a Picasso collage, a Futurist sculpture, and a surprising number of movies and TV shows to support his insights into our car culture.

Customer Reviews:
Definitely not for begginers.......2007-10-02
I never got around to finishing this book because halfway through it I noticed I had not even written a single line of code. The author does not propose any excercises for you to try out what your learned through the book. All he does is list all the functions available in PHP but no examples on how to use them.
I can see this book being useful as a reference after you have programmed PHP for a while, but for beginners that want to get started in PHP for the very firt time I would not recommend it.
Far too many typos, syntax errors, and gaps in explinations.......2007-09-15
I bought this book on recommendation. I have a background in programming, and I just needed a book to cement together all the concepts I had picked up in developing PHP apps. Less then 2 chapters in the errors became so frequent in the code that the author no longer holds my confidence. Its hard to be confident of his explanation if it lacks the care to make sure its correct.
The writing and explanations, though following a clear format, are at times wildly inconstant in explaining the parts of various functions. Do not recommend.
Full of value.......2007-08-07
I haven't programmed in almost 10 years, but wanted to jump into PHP and MySQL generated web content. I was able to pick and chose throughout this book to bring myself up to speed and have a functional website in a matter of 2 weeks. I was easily able to adapt examples in the book to fit my needs.
This book was really worth the money. I will be referencing to it for a long time to come.
Great reference for all.......2007-07-06
I am a semi-experienced programmer, majoring in CS and currently in my third year. I needed to buy a book to learn PHP for a job and originally went for O'Reilley's _Learning PHP and MySQL_. I quickly realized that was a bad choice, however, because it was way too simple and short and didn't really cover SQL at all. Even as a reference book it just did not suffice compared to Gilmore's _PHP5 and MySQL_ which I borrowed from a friend. PHP and MySQL is covered in great depth, and a thorough index makes this nearly-exhaustive text a great reference book.
**This is likely not a book for someone who has never programmed before** as it uses typical programming language terminology without previous definition. Still, abundant examples and side notes allows anyone with reasonable programming experience to breeze through the book. Reading this cover-to-cover would definitely not be the correct approach, but skimming over the chapters and getting acquainted with the PHP language is something this book makes easy to do when you can simply slow down and go over the examples when you feel you need to, or quickly reach the next section thanks to good organization and text formatting.
If you are looking for a reference book for PHP and MySQL just short of a bible, this is definitely for you. But if you are a complete novice to programming, you would probably be better off coming back to this later or buying it on the side for once you have more experience.
Great starter guide.......2007-06-22
this guide speaks in laymens terms and teached using simple examples. I would recomend this book for grandmothers and professional web admins collections
Customer Reviews:
Excellent collection of source documents.......2007-09-02
from Columbus to Alan Keyes (in my 1996 edition), each document has a brief intro written by the author that sets context and importance of the piece.
A "must own" for any American.
Every Citizen Should Be Familiar With The Contents!.......2007-04-16
This book has gathered together in one convenient place an impressive collection of letters, documents, speeches and essays which clearly illustrate the content of the Founders' souls. This book should be read by every American who considers him or herself a responsible adult. Notice the book is not called 'Republicans Will Eat Your Baby!', nor is it called 'Liberals Posessed By Demons, Communists'. It is aimed at AMERICANS, and that is how we'd better start seeing ourselves if we're ever going to wise up. This Red State/Blue State divisiveness will solve nothing; let's all agree to lay down our weapons and reasonably discuss ways to overcome the problems that are affecting all Americans! Let's all take a breather while refreshing our memories on what this country is really all about! I urge you as my fellow citizen to take the time to consider what this nation really means to YOU.

Book Description
This volume offers a survey and overview of world history, starting with the earliest-known human settlements and concluding in 1500--the early years of Europe's Renaissance, and in the Americas, the era of the Aztec and Inca empires. Following a summary of prehistoric cultures, the author covers the civilizations of the Fertile Crescent, ancient Egypt, civilization in the Indus and Yellow River valleys, early Mediterranean cultures, India's classical age, the rise of China's dynasties, classical Greek and Roman civilizations, the Islamic world, African kingdoms of the first millenium, Europe's middle ages, the Holy Roman Empire, the Crusaders and their clash with Turks, the Mongol invasion, and the humanism of the early European Renaissance.
Customer Reviews:
Exactly what it appears to be........2007-01-10
If you are looking for information on a specific civilization/region/empire, this is not the book for you. On the other end of the spectrum, if you want a really quick overview or just a bare-minimum outline of the last 500 years, this is also not the book for you. HOWEVER, if you want a good intermediary guide, this book is absolutely perfect. It covers about 90% of the relevant events since the middle-ages, and considering the giant scope of the title, it really is pretty short. Some guides may be shorter, but that's obviously because they don't cover as much. Some guides may be more interesting, but its hard to do that without making a book longer. Everything is a trade-off. This is a History guide, its not spell-binding, its not a page-turner, it will take you a while to get through. But it covers a lot of ground and is very easy to understand, which I think is the main purpose of this type of guide, and I think it does what it sets out to do very well.
West Africa gets the short end, yet again..........2005-06-21
Very poor analysis of West African civilizations. The author was so desperate to disregard the Ghana empire that he threw in a baseless and eurocentric statement that it was "possibly" founded by Touareg. The kingdom was founded by Soninke, a "negro" people as the author states. And, it traded with neighboring negro and non-negro people including the mixed-negro Touareg.
very helpful.......2002-12-02
This book was very helpful for me because not only does it give a good summary of world history but it gives quizzes at the end which helped me to evaluate how much I learned and retained. I was able to then go back through the chapter and read over the parts that I got wrong. That helped me to study and remember the information. I loved this book so much that I am looking for the first volume in this series as well.
Not so easy!.......2001-12-27
I'm not so sure than a two volume series on World History with a total of nearly 1000 pages of information deserves to be called `The Easy Way.' This is definitely NOT a short and sweet study guide for the new AP World History exam. If that's what you're looking for, I suggest you check out the AP World History study guides published by Peterson's or Barron's. On the other hand, if you're a high school teacher looking for a supplement to your textbook, or if you're a home-schooler who is looking for a textbook complete with practice tests, then this series may have value; however, I suspect that most people are going to find it a fairly traditional 1000 page summary of world history too tedious and utilitarian to be either engaging or useful. Frankly it begs comparison not with study guides or supplements, but with textbooks - which come with plenty of supplementary materials.
In my opinion, the book(s) should have been thematically organized and less than half as long.
Pretty good book.......2000-08-01
This book allowed me to get an introduction into world history and it helped me learn basic facts in the past. This also had a test for every chapter that was read. The test allowed me to learn more efficiently and easily. This book was very interesting and had good desciptions in most areas and it is a sure recommendation for people to read if they are having trouble in World History or if they just want to learn it for fun.

Customer Reviews:
A lot of hype, book does not deliver the "best" projects.......2001-11-19
I bought both of Van Cleave's "Best Science Fair Projects" books for my middle school child and was not impressed, in fact, I returned the first "Best Science Fair Projects" book as it was simply a waste of time and money. Readers should be advised that the majority of Van Cleave's projects are for very young children in early grammar school years, they are not for children who are planning for science fairs at the middle school or high school level, at least not on a competitive level. Many of Ms. Van Cleave's projects are demonstrations of certain basic science principles and that may be interesting for parents to try at home with their children in their spare time, but how does a child convert any of these into real projects that are supposed to ask a question, investigate the question, and proceed with an experiment to prove or disprove what the child is investigating. I cannot see where a book that contains projects such as "Can You Make a Diagram of an Insects Body" and where the materials required are cutting out the Head, Thorax and Abdomen out of construction paper to make a model insect, I cannot see where this is a project worthy to be called a "best science fair project," much less receive the praise that the other reviewers have given.
Great Book for all Ages!.......2001-11-12
I think this book is great for science project ideas. I used an idea from this book for the 2001 science fair at MacArthur Middle, and I won first prize! My little brother who goes to Maryland City Elementary used a project and he, too, won first prize! I think that this book should be a must in every library and home. Thank-you Janice Vancleave!
Great Science Fair Guideline.......2001-07-16
...This book is very thorough. It tells you how science fair projects should be presented. It had sample science fair projects. It gave outlines on abstracts, reports, etc.
My only problem with this book was that it was too complex for my daughter to understand on her own. I like my daughter to work on all her projects independently with only minimal guidance from me. There were concepts in this book that were difficult for her to understand, and I had to guide her through some of the ideas and explanations.
On a brighter side, she got an A on her project, and her teacher chose her project to display in the classroom as one of the teacher's favorite projects.
Won second place at Arapaho Elementary.......2001-06-20
My fifth grade son performed the experiment "Shadows" and won second place at the ... Elementray Science Fair ... The book tells you how to do research, write an abstract and write a report all on an elementary school level. The suggestions on how to do the display were the most valuable.
We are already planning our project for next year. I also have a daughter in the 2nd grade. There are enough projects in this book to last us until they are both our of elementary school. We only have to buy the book once and then use it year after year!
Format of book makes choosing a project easy.......2001-06-08
What I liked about this book is that your child can choose a science project by looking at the "Problem" (or the question) in the book. If the question seems interesting, they are motivated to perform the necessary experiments to find the answer. I also liked the display tips in the beginning.

good.......2005-10-10
Is a good book if you"re looking for ideas for your science fair. The book give you a complete guide step by step and a lot of project's ideas you can choose from.
Not Scientific.......2005-01-08
This book is fun and educational if you are interested in performing a DEMONSTRATION regarding a scientific concept. The examples have nothing to do with conducting an EXPERIMENT that one would present at a Science Fair. The "problems" listed for each example can be answered by opening an encyclopia. Generally a problem/question that begins with the word, "how" can be answered in such a way. The purpose of a science fair is to conduct ORIGINAL experiments involving an experimental group and a control group. There are other guide books on the market that take a more scientific approach and steer the student in the right direction.
Nowhere NEAR what I expected!!!!!.......2002-12-24
I bought this book in hopes of finding a good science fair project that could "bring home the gold." But all that I found was a kids science book that showed you what happened to fruit-flies in the light and other stupid stuff like that. It was nowhere near what I expected in such a highly reffered book. If you are looking for a good science project for someone above the age of 10 I would not recomend this book!

Good Guideline's and Sparks the Imagination.......2002-05-01
I first saw this book in the library and decided I needed a copy of my own. I like it. I have two children in the age range targeted by this book - aged 12 and 10 - and a younger one I will use it with in the future.
We are using it in our classic-education style homeschool, and I find it a good tool for helping my children learn how to think, research their topic and write it all down. The book does not lay out every step of preparation for the projects, as previous reviewers may have expected, rather it gives a good basic and practical overview of the scientific method, and fifty topic ideas to spark the imagination of the child. It is not geared to the highschooler - VanCleave has other books that are for that purpose. The child still has to do the work themselves in putting the project together, and to my mind that is a large part of the value of the book. My children learn far more from their own research and experimentation than they do from following steps and copying the research of others. There were ideas in this book that I would like to try!
Terrible, These are NOT the "Best" Science Fair Projects!.......2001-11-13
I picked up this book for my son in 6th grade after reading so many glorifying reviews about Van Cleave's books and the fact that she has so many books out there. Boy were we ever disappointed! These are not "science fair projects" that a student can use for doing a science fair project in grades 5 and up, rather, they are trite projects for little grade school children or kindergarteners. How can a project that asks the question "what are the parts of a fingernail" and for materials required lists only a magnifying glass for the so-called experiment which is consists of a student holding the magnifying glass over his/her fingernail to observe, how can this possibly be a "best" science fair project? How can this be any science fair project at all? Where is the hypothesis, what is the real experiment, how could a student enter this in a science fair? Don't waste your time with this one, I returned it for a refund.
