Customer Reviews:
Everything you ever wanted to know about silent comedy..........2000-08-15
If you were ever interested in any silent film comedies, then you must have this book. Besides profiling the major comedians like Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Langdon, and Laurel and Hardy, this book has large articles on W.C. Fields, Raymond Griffith, Lupino Lane, Colleen Moore, Larry Semon, Mabel Normand and others. One "classic" film from each is discussed in detail. Just about every obscure comedian that ever appeared in their own series or as a supporting player. There are also sections on topics such as different types of comedy, European comedy, etc. There are also plenty of illustrations. This is one reference book that a silent comedy fan will always want to have near.
Glenn Mitchell Does It Again!.......1999-08-22
As in his previous books on Laurel & Hardy, The Marx Brothers and Charlie Chaplin, British author Glenn Mitchell has brought his unique insight and wonderful writing style to this encyclopedia on silent film comedy. This book will delightfully jog the memory of almost anyone who had ever enjoyed a silent fun fest. Everyone is here from legends such as Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd and Langdon...to the more obscure such as Lloyd Hamilton, John Bunny, and even the Ton of Fun! You too can have a ton of fun within the pages of this bit of must reading for any film comedy fan.
A top shelf book for silent film comedy junkies.......1999-06-06
When you are a silent film comedy enthusiast, a book like this one is a must. There are very few reference books on silent film comedy, making this book essential for one's collection. Many books cover information about the stars, but very few cover the rich and varied history of the film studios famous or otherwise, another big plus for this book. Praise to Mr. Mitchell for his meticulous and massive research. The only improvements to this book would be a larger format and filmographies. And now Mr. Mitchell, when will your Keaton encyclopedia be coming out?
A comprehensible volume covering the entire silent era!.......1999-04-13
British film historian Glenn Mitchell has once again produced a most welcome paperback dealing with silent screen comedy. This time, Mr. Mitchell covers the entire spectre, from Jimmy Adams to Tammany Young, thus succeeding where others in recent years have utterly failed. There are plenty of places where to look up pertinent information on Keaton, Chaplin, Lloyd, etc.; even Charley Chase now has a biography on the market. But where can you read about the careers of Dee Lampton, the fat boy in "A Night in the Show," or George Ovey, of the long-ago "Cub Comedies"? Only in Mr. Mitchell's fine -- and thankfully! -- reasonably priced book. The "A-Z of Silent Film Comedy" is a must-have for any serious film scholar and highly recommended even for the casual fan.

Achtung!.......2007-05-04
Want to add another layer of complexity to your already complex web projects? Add Hack Management. This book will teach you to write hacks that are being overcome through valid techniques almost daily. True, some hacks are still necessary. Most are not - at least not an entire book's worth.
Must Have for Web Developers.......2007-04-22
We thought we had all of the CSS books we needed on our office shelves. Then one day, we were browsing the shelves in Borders and came across this book. There's so much here that you just don't find in the dry basic reference books. It's taken our company's work to a whole new level. Back in 1999, we learned everything about CSS - we learned a lot about what 'could' be done, but was not yet browser compliant. Hence, we used what we could and shelved rest. This book opened our eyes to a lot of things we never learned in the 'official' books back in the day!

Great practical CSS guide.......2006-09-01
I have to concur with the other reviewers. This book is excellent for its practicallity. While other books concentrate on concepts, and design (all necessary aspects), this is the book to use if you are looking to actually put up a multi-browser compatible CSS based site. This book, together with a great design/concept book such as "Bulletproof Web Design" by Dan Cederholm would be a perfect set of books to both create and implement CSS.
Useful for intermediate Web designers.......2005-10-25
As Joseph Lowery states, "The CSS community enjoys a wealth of information. Unfortunately, the sheer amount of information can also be a detriment: finding the right fix often requires significant digging." Enter CSS Hacks and Filters: a book intended to save readers some time googling their CSS/cross-browser compatibility problems by compiling the most common solutions all in one location.
For the beginner, it covers some of the basics, such as why use CSS at all, the notorious box model, the tan hack and the workarounds for floats. For the more advanced user, it covers some familiar ground, but goes into more detailed topics, including advanced layouts, navigation structures and using server-side solutions (ASP, PHP and ColdFusion) to control CSS. For Macromedia users, there are two chapters devoted to using CSS with Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Contribute 3. While now a version old with the release of Dreamweaver 8, most of the information is still relevant.
Lowery also overviews a few topics that can be used in conjunction with CSS, including JavaScript. One that caught my eye in particular was the section on scalable flash replacement, which automatically generates flash headings to replace CSS-styled text for those users with Flash Player 6 or later. As with most of the topics covered in the book, he provides links to the original sources of the information on the Web to supplement the explanations provided in the book.
In such a recent book, I was surprised to find an entire chapter devoted to hacking Netscape 4 (with a section concerning IE 3 and 4), considering that the only thought most designers give to Netscape 4 nowadays is pitying the poor fools still stuck using 9-year-old software.
While probably not the best book for the absolute beginner with no CSS experience or the very advanced Web developer for whom these hacks have become second nature, it's a useful resource for those of us in the middle... particularly for those who prefer checking an index in the back of a book as opposed to sifting through a few thousand Google hits.
Book Description
The 64 A.D. burning of Rome during the reign of Nero . . . Winston Churchill's ill-conceived and disastrous World War I plan to invade Turkey at Gallipoli . . . the Maginot Line, built in France in 1929-34 in a foolhardy effort to prevent the feared German invasion . . . the 1950s thalidomide pharmaceutical disaster that resulted in at least 20,000 babies born with deformities . . . the 1989-91 misappropriation of company funds by publishing executive Robert Maxwell, and the collapse of his financial empire . . . the Enron scandal of 2000 that brought down a yet larger business empire. Chronicled in these pages are stories of corporate chicanery, poor military decisions, engineering disasters, diplomatic blunders, and other appalling, large-scale mistakes that resulted in ruin and misery for countless innocent bystanders. Here are baleful tales motivated by false hope, anger, greed, pride, lust, and many other instances of erratic human behavior. A selection of approximately 50 disastrous decisions are presented, each grim account summarized in a report of roughly a half-dozen pages and enhanced with sidebars and thumbnail-sized cartoon-style illustrations. Each account opens with its cast of characters, then sets the story's background before reporting the grim details and concluding with the unhappy moral. Here is a page-turner of a book that recounts some of history's most dramatic-but also catastrophic-moments.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining look at history.......2007-01-26
This book provides a concise and entertaining look at some of the most idiotic decisions throughout (mostly Western) history. Whether you agree with the author's choices or not, he has written an easy to read book that is both funny and informative. He had tried to put each of the decision into their historical context with a brief background to the decisions made; finding that in many cases it 'seemed like a good idea at the time'.
The only downside to it is that there are a number of historical inaccuracies in the detail. This is unfortunate, as better editing would have picked these anomolies up, even by a layman.
Overall though, well worth the read.
Poorly researched, poorly written, poorly edited.......2007-01-08
I've read this book and found it to have many errors of fact. The basis of the humour depends on trust in the author that the historical accounts he describes are actually correct. Once you lose faith in the historical correctness of the book, as I did, it has nothing to offer, not even humour.
The author and publisher should have provided references for all the events described - the credibility of the book depends on it! If this author had made the effort to find and document references for all the facts, it would have been a much more interesting, satisfying -- and funny -- read.
Encyclopedia Idiotica indeed!.......2006-04-30
On page 110 the Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on June 25, 1914. On page 113 he was assassinated on June 18, 1914. All other history books give the date as June 28, 1914 and cite this as the beginning of World War I.
The entertaining style makes it worth 2 stars as long as you take it with a hefty dose of salt.
Fun to read, in bite size "snippets".......2006-04-04
The author presents a wide ranging array of "idiots" from Menelaus to Churchill to others less well known. Each "idiot" or idiotic incident is giving a few pages, and cleverly categorized by which sin or virtue is appropriate. Even though I read many history works on European history, I still learned a few things. It's a bit breezy for a serious approach, but that's not the author's intent. It might work well as a supplemental work in a lower level course, especially in adding one's own idiot's, debating his choices and coverage of it.
Overall, a fun book! Historically accurate as far as I could tell, but I did disagree with some of his choices, and would have added others (Nixon just begs for this) - but it simply shows his perspective, and he obviously wanted to cover at least a few lesser known lessons from history, and to his credit, doesn't catalog the common golems of the left or right.
A wonderful bedtime reading book!
Mad monks, maginot and more.......2006-03-19
Big mistakes of the past come to life under author Stephen Weir's close inspection in the scholarly yet lively ENCYCLOPEDIA IDIOTICA: HISTORY'S WORST DECISIONS AND THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THEM. Here are exposes of mad monks, desperate Indian encounters of the faulty kind, Maginot's famous line, the Bhopal chemical disaster when cost-cutting led to death, and more; from original idiots Adam and Eve right into modern times. Expect a lively tone which lends to easy reading, and a fine survey of arguments on historical fact and effect which often are charted right into modern times.

Book Description
A scientist friend asked Bruno Latour point-blank: "Do you believe in reality?" Taken aback by this strange query, Latour offers his meticulous response in Pandora's Hope. It is a remarkable argument for understanding the reality of science in practical terms.
In this book Latour, identified by Richard Rorty as the new "bête noire of the science worshipers," gives us his most philosophically informed book since Science in Action. Through case studies of scientists in the Amazon analyzing soil and in Pasteur's lab studying the fermentation of lactic acid, he shows us the myriad steps by which events in the material world are transformed into items of scientific knowledge. Through many examples in the world of technology, we see how the material and human worlds come together and are reciprocally transformed in this process.
Why, Latour asks, did the idea of an independent reality, free of human interaction, emerge in the first place? His answer to this question, harking back to the debates between Might and Right narrated by Plato, points to the real stakes in the so-called science wars: the perplexed submission of ordinary people before the warring forces of claimants to the ultimate truth.

Those French Have a Different Word for Everything!.......2001-04-24
In Pandora's Hope, Bruno Latour is resolute in his efforts to [1] understand the mire philosophers of language have found themselves in, and [2] move on past those chimeras of epistemological impossibilities toward a richer understanding of things by scrutinizing the very practice of science and shaking loose the foundations presupposed by realist and social constructivist frameworks. This review, I will admit, is overly preoccupied by Latour's handling of "language," but Pandora's Hope covers quite well a much broader breadth of philosophical inquiry than my particular esoteric interest lets on. But since that is where my particular interests lie, let it be said that at least as an extremely strong subtext, Latour, through an exploration of the reality of science studies, relentlessly pursues the concocted philosophic divide between the world and words, and attempts to set us afoot on a more fruitful conceptual path from the dead-end correspondence theory and the resulting materialist/relativist dichotomy. If all this sounds far too heady, blame me, not Latour: for his ability to summarize in an attempt to overcome the various sprawling philosophical puzzles, his writings have a refreshing narrative flow, subtle wit, and an underlying humility that is encouraging rather than intimidating for the reader. It's not "lite" reading, but for those up for the challenge, it will be a rewarding task.
Latour for beginners.......2000-06-27
Latour has written a clear introduction to his current position in the field of STS-studies. Chapter after chapter, patiently, he clarifies the basic premises of his work. Whatever one thinks about Latour's radical redifinition of the field of science and technology studies, this is an enjoyable book: clear and well written.
A clear statement of Latour's position.......2000-06-27

Not One For The Purists.......2000-03-14
You have to admire Bruno Latour's persistence in the face of often vicious misunderstanding of what he's about. In many ways the core insights he has brought to the study of science have been available to readers for almost 20 years, yet it is still necessary for him to constantly reframe arguments to try and get the points across. This book shows once again the profound seriousness of his philosophical approach, based in the work of Serres, Deleuze and Whitehead amongst many others, and yet it seems inevitable that its lucid style and empirical foundation will find 'academic' philosophers once again all at sea (and substituting the usual bile for genuine understanding). This is Latour at his most sober, pleading for common sense in an area that is surely the intellectual world's biggest reservoir of wishful mysticism - the relationship between representation and reality. It's not just philosophers who find this banal question interesting, but also scientists, who increasingly adopt the same impoverished schema as those in science studies have developed over the years to judge (not understand) what scientists do. This is one of the great strengths of Latour's book and overall approach, how he respects the work and procedures of both sides, using neither to be reductionist about the other. What emerges is a science fully implicated in the 'social' world, and a social world just as implicated in the world of facts and theories - no puritanical separation, but also not a simple reflection of one in the other either. It will confuse and anger philosophers and scientists alike, but only to the extent that they have disciplinary empires to protect - Latour is interested in the world, and not constant petty claims about who understands it best.
Yawn, once again.......2000-03-03
LaTour should learn something about science before pontificating about it! Once again he displays only a shallow knowledge of science and tries again to place it on another coordinate grid. A real intellectual yawn.
