Not impressed.......2001-09-13

This book was o.k., but certainly did not live up to the review I read. It is not one I would personally recommend to others. I gave it a 2 Star rating out of a possible 5 Stars.

Texana at its best!.......2000-08-03

This book is considered by historians to be one of the most important books ever published in America but more importantly it is a great read. Not dry historical facts, it is a fascinating memoir of the struggles of German immigrant Max Krueger in Texas during the 19th century. Not only were his adventures truly amazing but his personality and spirit are a interesting look at what motivated one of the most successful immigrants to early Texas. He worked as a cowboy, postmaster, photographer, miller, dam builder, buffalo hunter, rancher and later industrialist. Published by the Krueger family posthumously as 'Pioneer Life In Texas' the original is extremely hard to find but this reprint does it justice. Mr. Krueger wrote his memoirs in German with the intent that they be published in Germany to inform possible immigrants about Texas. He included what are some of the most extensive and interesting descriptions of how Texas looked during the 19th century. I have read many books on Texas in the 1800's and find this one to be the best by far. He was amazing man who lived during a dangerous and wild period of early Texas.

He managed the fabled New York Yankees from 1949 to 1960 and compiled ten American League pennants and seven world championships during that time. A great cheatbook.......2000-02-13

Tex Murphy: Overseer is a great sequel. It all started with the games Under a Killing Moon and The Pandora Directive. When I got this game, I got stuck on the first two levels. Then I got this book. It has detailed walkthroughs, which show you exactly what to do, and an original script for the game in back which has some helpful tips. And for a bonus, they also have a behind the scenes look with the creators. So if you have the game and you are stuck, get this book. (Oh, and a little cheat not in the book is when you reach the floor puzzle in the gallery near the end, press ALT-F and the floor will become safe to cross.)

This book made me look smart at my new job.......2007-03-09

I started a new job in January and wasn't told that part of it would involve working with InDesign. Knowing nothing about that program, I immediately ordered my trusty "Dummies series" book - it's taught me everything from raising a Golden Retriever to Tarot Cards! Needless to say, the InDesign book didn't fail me. All the basics were there. The only problem was that sometimes I didn't know what to look up in the index because I wasn't sure what the process was called. Other than that, it was and continues to be a great resource!

Adequate.......2005-08-20

While this book has helped me to get up and running in Adobe InDesign, I am not overwhelmed by it as a resource. For one thing, it needs more screen pictures and clearer screen pictures. I also found several instances where knowlege was assumed - the editors has skipped to the conclusion of a task, without really explaining it. I guess that they assume most layout designers will know how, but for those more familiar with Microsoft products, that is not the case. Finally, the index at the back of the book is sorely lacking. I could not find many basic elements of the program listed there, so the index is not always much of a resource for jumping right to the area you need.

A Wealth of Tips and Knowledge.......2005-08-04

This book sits next to me all day. I read it front to back and am now using it as a reference during my projects. This book is worth it if you have or plan to purchase CS2.

It humbly guides us on our journey through time, and will even show us where we have gone astray. Dr. Archibald proficiently uncovers the secrets of the past, and identifies them as the truths upon which a sound future can be built

A Book to Remember.......2000-04-12

Historical societies and preservation organizations have proliferated in recent decades. This undoubtedly arises from a humanly-shared experiential depth, a depth that Robert Archibald, examines in this brooding look at the deeply interconnected relation between personal experience and community, time, and place.

The narrative is framed around Archibald's return to his boyhood home of Ishpeming, Michigan where he revisits once familiar places: a store run by a 96 year-old woman, a nearby cemetery, an abandoned family camphouse, the shore of Lake Michigan, and others. These had helped to form him, and each represented a different insight into time and community.

Professionally trained as an historian, his career has primarily been devoted to public history, in effect working with the public experience of history. This perspective forced him to question "the mantle of objective distance" that was demanded by his academic training. Reading widely he came to recognize the importance of memory in that "[t]o be human is to struggle to make sense of our own pasts as a means of establishing identity and forming relationships with the world we inhabit." (p. 30)

He returned to his home town to reflect upon the processes of his memory and the way in which his life had been formed by the events, people, and places that made up the world of his childhood. From this emerged his understanding that "[t]he community we create is founded in shared remembrance and grounded in place, especially those places that are conducive to the casual associations necessary for emergence of shared memory, common ground, and commitment to the common good." (p. 24) Consequently, he decries our failure to see history and place as formative, in that past experience is "the only guide we have" (p. 113), therefore, "[t]he point to the past will be lost and humanity imperiled if in our relativistic timidity we refuse to draw conclusions from the past and if we persist in the belief that the tens of thousands of years of human life on the crust of this planet have no guideposts to offer us." (pp. 120-121)

Archibald proposes four "core values" as organizing principles for public history: memory, transcendence, sustainability, and mutual obligation. All of these warrant considerable discussion, which is unfortunately beyond the scope of this review.

In the vast forest of publications, this book stands out; it is simultaneously wise, compassionate, prophetic, and a good read. It is a must for those involved in public history, historic preservation, and cultural resource management.

Giving us inspiration for the future of the community.......2000-04-02

It's a struggle to find balance between "progress" and quality of life. It's also a struggle to retain our connections to the past and try to fit them into our lives today. In searching for some "quick" answers to how the museum I manage could answer some of these questions and how we can continue to be relevant to the community we serve, I read this book. It, of course, doesn't provide any quick solutions, but instead provides a heap of ideas and a strong philosophy to base activities & programs on. I read it as a museum professional, BUT found alot in it for my role as a community member. I'd definitely recommend the book for anyone interested in strengthening their community or finding common ground between community groups. The book does not read like a "how to" book. It's beautifully written, but still practical. A quick quote from the book: "Remembering confirms our attachments to each other".

Our evil side.......2004-01-08

This anthology begins with an analysis of genocide, specifically how the authors/editors defined it and decided which historical acts were genocidal and which were not. It the includes readings covering 1,000 years of gruesome history. More a souce book than an analytical monograph.
