A gem of a book.......2001-09-30
Sports has obviously changed immensely over the past few generations. Players in the old days hid their injuries, never wanted to leave a game and never looked at the stats. Today it's a business as much as a game and very few people lived through the entire revolution that is modern day sports. Johnny VanderMeer is one of the few: he played with Ruth, played at a time when your celebrity status did not exempt you from going to war, played at a time when playing baseball was a game. Paul Lichtman chronicles the life and times of Mr. VanderMeer with a perfect mix of being a baseball fan, a traditionalist and a modern day realist. The book let's you know that Mr. VanderMeer had a lot more to him than a great week of baseball. A must read!
Unsung hero, but no longer forgotten.......2001-03-29
This was a very good book of a player who shined briefly and has done something I don't think any other pitcher will ever do again: 2 STRAIGHT no hitters!!! Not in todays me first, I'm underpayed league. Its nice to see a that the author hasn't forgotten, and I think alot of other people can really get something out of this, other than just "baseball" information. Maybe some of todays players should read this to see what the game is all about.

Award-winning photographer Harry Benson came to America in 1964 with the Beatles and knew he never wanted to leave. Working for the most popular magazines in the country-Life, People, The New Yorker, Van authority Fair-he has photographed everyone and everything, from the famous to the infamous, from the sublime to the absurd, from Bob Guccione styling a model to Truman Capote dancing with transvestites. Whether they are images of Steven Spielberg, Richard Nixon, or Andy Warhol, or shots of music concerts, political rallies, or sports events, the pictures Benson has gathered in this book capture the essence of this country's pop culture over the last four decades.
No story is too small and no personality too big for the finest photographic chronicler of America's constantly changing and vastly entertaining public spectacle-a realm where success and achievement only sometimes go hand-in-hand. More irreverent than his previous books, Harry Benson's America shows a side of the photographer's work that hasn't been seen before, shedding new light on our nation in turn. AUTHOR BIO: Harry Benson has won numerous awards for his photojournalism, and his work has been the subject of many exhibitions. He worked for Life for almost 30 years, as well as for Vanity Fair, Newsweek, The New Yorker, and People. Abrams' Harry Benson: 50 Years in Pictures and Once there was a way . . . Photographs of the Beatles are among his many published books. He lives in New York City with his wife, Gigi.

Light stuff........2006-09-12
He hangs out with celebrities takes a bunch of pictures and winds up getting some human interest ones of them looking hungry, annoyed, stressed, or something else. The other variety is of the totally manufactured Annie Leibowitz type. Very little of substance or true spontaneity here; not fascinating, quite pretentious (Spielberg looking like a "kid" etc).
Customer Reviews:
When the catalog is bigger than the book, there's a problem.......2006-11-10
I really love the Munchkin line of RPG products. They are a little light on content for their price but up to now it was bearable. I figured I would complete my set of all the Munchkin items by picking up the GM screen. The screen is helpful in handling often asked questions and provides several useful charts. This is what a GM screen is for.
HOWEVER, the adventure they included is very short, although it feels pretty hefty when you first grab it. It turns out that SJ Games inserted a product catalog in the center of the adventure. I don't mind catalogs but in this case the catalog was longer and had more pages than the adventure itself. You can honestly hold the catalog in one hand and the adventure in the other and tell the significant diference between the two. I was very disappointed! The adventure wasn't really all that good so the let down was doubly bad.
If you really have the desire to complete your Munchkin collection, go ahead and get this product. But you need to be aware that this is sorely lacking in content.
C'mon to the staff at SJ Games; Make a concerted effort to actually give the gamer what they pay for. If you really want to earn business, give them a little bit more and make people happy they decided to spend their gaming money on your products.

Customer Reviews:
Very basic, adds nothing that's not in the manual.......2006-08-02
I was very disappointed with this book and will be returning it.
If you have spent a few minutes playing with Moodle and read even a little of the online manual, this book adds nothing new. The system is easy to figure out, as most items are pretty self-explanatory and each option has a handy pop-up help screen that explains anything that you don't understand. The online documentation is very good.
I was hoping this book would explain how to do more advanced things in Moodle - how the many available add-on modules work and what they contribute to a finished system, tips and tricks to add videos and flash files to your courses, best practices for course development, advanced customizing, etc. But there was none of that in the book - only the same information that is already included free with Moodle. Save your money!
As good as it gets.......2006-07-02
Executive Summary: Good, well written overview, buy if you can afford it, a good book by the standards of how to publishing but not critical as a lot of stuff is on Moodle's site.
................
Moodle has about 50% of the education market now and there are a lot of people working on it and a ton of information available through moodle's site. Mooodle 1.6, which I am using, has yet to stablizie properly and there are all kinds of bugs needing to be tackled. These vary depending on what level of Apache you use and what your level of admin access is. So, though it is more focused than a lot of other books, your milage will obviously vary depending on your logistics.
Moodle itself is easy enough to use and it helps to be familiar with it before reading through the book. Like most of the other books in this range, I just skim it as I more or less know how to use the admin panel; the book concentrates on front end classroom stuff, not on setting up Moodle and as all classes vary and teachers uses different methodologies or none, it is hard to write a definitive book on a pliable tool. The book is written in very clear and cogent Engish and this is not always the case with how to geek books, so that is a big plus.
Also, there are a few interesting teaching insights in the book, more than most others I have read and they are valuable. It gives for example, novel ways to use Wikis. But you would probably hit on these yourself after a while.
There are different ways of using the functions (different levels of access for teacher only, groups of students and teacher, or everyine doing the class). There are also different ways of teaching; I prefer a more informal approach and beleive in giving the students a lot of rope. This means I will use some functions and ignore others.
I have skipped the set quizes/ exams section for examole as it seems like a lot of useless work unless you have hundreds in your class. But again YMMV. I give it 5 stars as it is a well written book that is more focused than some others I have reviewed here.
Not Indepth Enough!.......2006-06-28
The book is OK as a read, but isn't very strong when it comes to actually using Moodle. I was expecting much deeper information than is found in this book. I'm still going to have to spend hours just trying things out on Moodle before I can do anything of real use. It appears that Moodle can be a very powerful tool, but the book seems to focus primarily on entry level knowledge. Too bad.
An interesting look at a quality open source package..........2005-12-30
It's always fun when you catch wind of something technical that you didn't even know existed. That's the position I'm in with the O'Reilly book Using Moodle - Teaching with the Popular Open Source Course Management System by Jason Cole. This is a very cool software package, and the book covers it very well.
Contents: Introduction; Moodle Basics; Creating and Managing Content; Using Forums, Chats and Dialogues; Quizzes; Workshops; Assignments and Exercises; Journals; Glossaries; Lessons; Wikis; Grades and Scales; Managing Your Class; Surveys and Choices; Putting It All Together; Moodle Administration; Index
I had no idea there was any open source content management systems (CMS) out there, much less ones with a rather quirky and cool name like Moodle. This book is published under the O'Reilly Community Press imprint, which means that people intimately involved in the technology create the documentation that is then put into print and distributed by O'Reilly. It's also licensed under the Creative Commons structure, so it's designed to be used and built on by others. I think O'Reilly should be commended for providing this valuable niche to the technical community. The author has put together some solid documentation on Moodle, supplemented by his warnings and tips based on real world experience. Although you might be able to get a drier version of the documentation online, all it would take is one or two of Cole's warnings to save you more than the cost of the book many times over. Even if you're not necessarily considering Moodle as a CMS, it's worth reading the book to see how elegant an open source software solution can be. It'd be really hard for me to recommend commercial solutions costing tens of thousands of dollars after reading this volume.
This is a well-done book that can open your eyes to what an open source solution can provide, whether it's for a CMS or something else. Worth a read...
MOODLE ON DUDE!.......2005-11-05
What's in a name? Well, quite a bit if you're talking about "Moodle." Author Jason Cole, has done an outstanding job of writing a book for instructors learning how to use Moodle.
Cole begins by discussing Moodle as a CMS and surveying its tools and features. Next, the author gets you started using Moodle. Then, he covers individual tools in the basic Moodle package. The author continues by delving into the management of your course, including adding and removing users, creating user groups, and backing up your course. In addition, the author next covers Moodle's built-in survey functions for assessing your class. He also pools all the disparate tools into a comprehensive whole and shows some of the creative ways teachers have used Moodle. Finally, he covers how to administer an entire Moodle site.
With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of showing universities, community colleges, K-12 schools, businesses, and even individual instructors how to add web technology to their courses. So, Moodle on dude!

Book Description
History isn't always made by great armies colliding or by great civilizations rising or falling. Sometimes it's made when a chauffeur takes a wrong turn, a scientist forgets to clean up his lab, or a drunken soldier gets a bit rowdy. That's the kind of history you'll find in The Greatest Stories Never Told.
This is history candy -- the good stuff. Here are 100 tales to astonish, bewilder, and stupefy: more than two thousand years of history filled with courage, cowardice, hope, triumph, sex, intrigue, folly, humor, and ambition. It's a historical delight and a visual feast with hundreds of photographs, drawings, and maps that bring each story to life. A new discovery waits on every page: stories that changed the course of history and stories that affected what you had for breakfast this morning.
Consider:
- The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock because they ran out of beer
- Some Roman officials were so corrupt that they actually stole time itself
- Three cigars changed the course of the Civil War
- The Scottish kilt was invented by an Englishman
Based on the popular Timelab 2000® history minutes hosted by Sam Waterston on The History Channel®, this collection of fascinating historical tidbits will have you shaking your head in wonder and disbelief. But they're all true. And you'll soon find yourself telling them to your friends.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting little book.......2007-06-21
I enjoyed this little book, it has interesting little pieces of history not well known. I didn't sit down and read the whole thing I read one story a day until I'd read the whole thing. The book is in sequence by years and it goes back to the beginning of some of the things we take for granted today I liked learning those little details about the people who were important in those days. I just wish there were more stories I looked forward to reading a little piece of interesting history everyday.
Fascinating book.......2007-05-07
A great book for someone with a short attention span or people who can only spare a second or two here and there to read. People interested in history will love this book, as would those interested in trivia. Also would recommend for kids who are working on oral reading fluency.
Lots of fun.......2007-04-11
This book has been a lot of fun to read and share with friends. I usually think history is boring, but this book makes it interesting.
Short, Easy to Read Snipits from World History.......2007-04-05
"The Greatest Stories Never Told: 100 Tales from History to Astonish, Bewilder, and Stupefy" by Rick Beyer is a fun little book with some fascinating tidbits from history.
I must admit I was disappointed by the size of the book. It's pretty small, so although there are 100 entries, each entry is only three to four paragraphs long. You can easily finish reading the entire book in an hour or two.
Anyway, the stories are very interesting and range in subject, from historical events to great moments in sports, medicine, science, and so on. Examples of subject matter include the first dog in space (before man, mind you), the restructuring of the calendar as we know it, the creation of microwaves, the inventor of the guillotine, Thomas Edison's introduction of the electric chair, the death of Attila the Hun, how a Booth saved the life of a Lincoln (as opposed to assassinating him), the most powerful pirate ever (hint: she was a woman), and the origins of penicillin. A majority of the stories seem to concern Unites States history.
To me, this book is a teaser, wetting your appetite to find out more. That's what I did. As soon as I finished "The Greatest Stories Never Told," I started looking up books on some of the topics that intrigued me (sadly, I couldn't find anything on Louis Braille).
All in all, "Greatest" is a good gift book, especially for younger people. The text is easy to read, the stories are enjoyable, and there are plenty of photos/pictures to help the imagination. It really helps history come alive.
Good gift for history buff.......2007-01-09
I struggled to find the perfect gift for my love for Christmas. He knows quite a lot about history and I wanted something he would be sure to find "new". HE LOVES THIS BOOK. It is full of much trivia-like facts about many different hints of the past dating back to the 1800's. I think I scored big on this one! He was enthralled. Not being such a lover of this type of reading material, I actually found this book quite enjoyable myself. Each story about an historical event is about 2 pages in length. Not too much, but right to the point. Entertaining.

Unbelievable stories!.......2007-10-07
I am a social studies teacher and my jaw dropped reading these short tidbits on historical events -- this is such a great writer in easy-to-understand language. My students love it when I tell them stuff like this you'll never find in a textbook.
A pleasant diversion.......2007-10-06
This book was nice distraction. To be honest, the first time I saw it and looked at the format I thought it wouldn't be that good but actually I was pleasntly surprised. Although I was familiar with many of the stories, Beyer managed to surprise me with a few new angles on some of these bits of trivia. Better yet, he came up with several new stories I had never heard.
Great book. I look forward to more of this type.
First read of a Rick Beyer work.......2007-08-28
I usually stick with known writers like David McCullough, Walter Isaacson, and Stephen B. Oates. This time I went for a new name and I'm glad I did. I had read about the little known reason why Mr. Lincoln had ordered a raid on Libby Prison in Richmond, but it had never been so interestingly explained as Mr. Beyer does in this book. It's by far one of the best books on military history that I've read. I'll describe it as having a good sense of drama with a scholar's meticulous attention. Unlike my newest one, "Kill Me If You Can", Beyer's book is one that anyone interested in military history will enjoy. No, this is not a veiled commercial. I'll assure you that unless you're an exception, you'd hate my book. Truthfully, I'm beginning to believe my motive for writing it was to see just how many people I could alienate. Bob Miller
Great bathroom reading.......2007-05-22
This book is full of interesting little tidbits that are only a page spread long each, perfect for the coffee table or bathroom. It's great for whetting your appetite for a particular historical event, which, in my case, usually sends me to other books or online to find out more detail.
A good read.......2006-03-09

Book Description
In The Modern History of Japan: From Tokugawa Times to the Present, Andrew Gordon paints a richly nuanced and strikingly original portrait of the last two centuries of Japanese history. He takes students from the days of the shogunate--the feudal overlordship of the Tokugawa family--through the modernizing revolution launched by midlevel samurai in the late nineteenth century; the adoption of Western hairstyles, clothing, and military organization; and the nation's first experiments with mass democracy after World War I. Gordon offers the finest synthesis to date of Japan's passage through militarism, World War II, the American occupation, and the subsequent economic rollercoaster. But the true ingenuity and value of Gordon's approach lies in his close attention to the non-elite layers of society. Here students will see the influence of outside ideas, products, and culture on home life, labor unions, political parties, gender relations, and popular entertainment. The book examines Japan's struggles to define the meaning of its modernization, from villages and urban neighborhoods, to factory floors and middle managers' offices, to the imperial court. Most importantly, it illuminates the interconnectedness of Japanese developments with world history, demonstrating how Japan's historical passage represents a variation of a process experienced by many nations and showing how the Japanese narrative forms one part of the interwoven fabric of modern history. With a sustained focus on setting modern Japan in a comparative and global context, The Modern History of Japan is ideal for undergraduate courses in modern Japanese history, Japanese politics, Japanese society, or Japanese culture.
Customer Reviews:
Untangling and Navigating 200 Years of History.......2005-01-27
In A Modern History of Japan, Andrew Gordon sets to do the ambitious - to give a bottom up approach to writing a historical narrative - without ignoring the big picture. Gordon intertwines several interrelated events in Japan's continuing history pertaining to social markers - from the Tokugawa era to the present. By doing this he brings to presence a myriad of themes.
Gordon's book is a traditional chronological examination of the history of Japan. However, Gordon takes history to a different level by adding complexity. Gordon takes the time to examines, in some detail the issue of women in Japan's fast changing society, the ever changing identity markers of the Japanese youth with reference to their role in society, from the Tokugawa to the post-war era. Lets face it, modernization and democratization in Japan has been turbulent to say the least, and as examined in this sweeping book by Gordon, the causes and effects are many and as discussed previously - complicated. Gordon has a wonderful handle on the complexity despite his position as an outsider to the culture.
Deftly opening with the fall of the shogunate, Gordon deftly untangles and presents the interior and exterior pressures that form the impetus for the civil strife and the eventual Meiji "restoration." The "restorers" according to Gordon were alarmed by and reacted to European colonization. Gordon explains that the rejoinder to change, by all classes is intertwined with nationalism. Gordon navigates us through the postwar Japan were the national polity was more worried with reconstruction than with "history," setting the stage for the so-called Japanese economic miracle up to 1990 - which is really a result of Realpolitik and historical luck.
The book is nothing less than a comprehensive look into two centuries of Japanese history. The eclectic but solid mix of topics/themes includes landlord-tenant dealings since the Tokugawa era to the present, and lastly, the dangers Japan has to navigate through in this challenging yet promising post war era. Gordon ends the book hurriedly with a quick examination of the ever-changing party politics horizon in the present era.

Excellent history book.......2003-10-04
This book was easy to read and understand. I enjoyed it so much that I did not even sell it at the end of the class. I reccomend this book to anyone even remotely interested in Japanese history.
Great Overview of Japanese Histor.......2003-04-26
Andrew Gordon covers the important aspects of Japanese history through time. He starts off by dealing with the Tokugawa and ends with the current political situation at the turn of the century. The appendixes provide a good account of Japanese government by listing the prime ministers and the country's election results since the end of WWII. Contemporary History of Japan focuses on important aspects of the Tokugawa regime such as its political, social and economic set up of Tokugaw Japan and focuses on its eventual downfall. The book continues with the Samurai revolution and the Meiji revolution that set the path for Japan to become a world power. Gordon then continues Japan in the early 20th centiru and how the countr began to change internallly as a result and how Japan dealt the Depressoin Crises in the 1930s, its wars with China and Russia and its eventual role in WWII and the American influence in the post WWII years. After the end of WWII, Japan becomes a dominant figure on the world stage with rapid economic growth unparalled else where in the world resulting in massive changes in society. Gordon does deal with Japanese economic troubles in the post WWII era such as the oil crises in the 1970s and the how Japanese bubble burst as well as other issues Japan is facing such as low-birth rates and changing gender roles.
Great background to Japan overall.
Outstanding.......2003-03-01
This is an outstanding book on the modern history of Japan since the early 19th century. Mr. Gordon writes exceptionally well; unlike most academics, his sentences are mercifully short. You won`t get lost in any run-on sentences that take up half a page. Having said that, however, this is not a book just for children. People who have lived in Japan for years or who have studied Japan extensively as graduate students will find something to learn in this book. The book has many appealing aspects. It devotes considerable time to discussing the lives of ordinary Japanese, and it makes for fascinating reading. The book is relatively short and can be finished in one week. Finally, the author`s emphasis on the similarities between Japan and other nations in the tumultuous modern era is most welcome. The Japanese are not a unique, bizarre people; like all people everywhere, modernity is something they have adjusted to and dealt with, with varying degrees of success and failure. Mr. Gordon`s book is well worth reading.
Good and detailed.......2002-09-28
I received this book today and flipped through it while doing laundry. I'm impressed. It's been a long time since I read a history book and this isn't like the dry, boring texts I remember from school.
I won't waste time mentioning that he covers all the obvious stuff, all the wars and major political events that you would expect a history book to cover.
What struck me is his ability to smoothly give you the big picture while sticking in little bits that give you some idea of what the people at the time thought and experienced.
In addition to telling you about the hardships of farming, he gives a picture of a 21-year-old girl's hands; that's all you need to see. In addition to telling you about the influence of the west, he shows you pictures of Japanese women in wanna-be outfits that just say it all. The cartoons, political posters, songs, propaganda posters -- they give a feel for Japan I wasn't expecting from a book.
This book is mostly text; I don't want to imply it has a ton of extras but it has enough to really drive home some of his points.
All that and I haven't even read the book yet!
It was interesting to learn that (obviously) Japan wasn't always like it is now. The description of the employment situation in the 1920s sounds quite a lot like America in the 1990s boom -- no loyal employees with lifelong employment then! Knowing that less than a hundred years ago the reserved, peaceful Japanese engaged in widespread political riots where they beat each other and the police shook up my stereotypes.
Good book, highly recommended.

Book Description
Extensively updated with all chapters rewritten, two entirely new chapters, and double the information and references, Amino Acids and Proteins for the Athlete: The Anabolic Edge, Second Edition reflects the nearly exponential increase in data and knowledge regarding the requirements and functions of amino acids and their role in energy metabolism and metabolic signaling. Expanding the chapter on maximizing body composition and exercise performance to comprise Part II of the book, this second edition gives professional and recreational athletes the tools to improve performance using nutrition and nutritional supplements as alternatives to drug use. Examining the available scientific and medical information in order to determine the physiological and pharmacological effects of protein and amino acids on lean body mass, body fat, strength, and endurance, the author provides a brief review of energy and protein metabolism before describing the positive impact of supplementation on athletic performance, health, disease, and longevity. The book outlines the protein requirements of athletes and the effects of increasing both the amount and quality of dietary protein. It reveals the actions of protein and amino acid supplements on muscle size and strength and energy metabolism and the role of specific amino acid supplements on metabolic and physiological responses to strength and endurance exercises. Specific topics include sources of dietary protein such as vegetarian diets, protein foods vs. supplements, and bioavailability, as well as the actions of amino acids on the central nervous system, the endocrine system, and as hepatoprotectants. Clarifying previously held concepts and addressing new concepts in light of new research, this second edition brings the information on proteins and amino acids up to date, speculates on future directions, and gives solid, practical advice on effective nutritional supplementation.

Wow! Just What I Was Looking For........2001-07-03
This is a terrific book. Yes, it's technical, but if you managed to get through moderately advanced High School science courses, or if you hacked college, don't sweat it, you'll get it. Di Pasquale--an M.D.--gives much in-depth, detailed information on the metabolism, physiological effects of, and potential for excercise enhancement of amino acids, proteins, and their effect on body hormones. Di Pasquale knows that the reader wants to apply the information to athletic performance. He talks about both anaerobic and aerobic excercise, but since he is a former powerlifting champion, he zeroes in on anaerobic excercise (e.g., bodybuilding, powerlifting), which is very refreshing. You also get summary detail toward the end of the book that gives sample supplement doses and critical timing of dosing to maximize results. Di Pasquale also weighs in on other non-amino acid supplements that affect anabolism (or purport to) such as Pyruvate, HMB, etc. (There's no info on steroids, so forget about that.) Overall a terrific advance for bodybuilders and worth it if you want to get away from all the hype and zero in on some science. This book is for the thinking bodybuider. Naturals, in particular, have much to gain.
Excellent information.......2000-08-05
This book, while a bit technical, is not beyond the understanding of anyone with even the slightest knowledge of nutrition. It is comprehensive, well documented, and offers a total explanation about how protein and amino acids interact with exercise to promote muscular development. It is the best book on the subject in current existence.
A mediocre book without a Phd in the sciences.......2000-04-14
This book had good points and bad points.some of the information contained was applicable for self educated bodybuilders but unfortunately for the most part their was a plethora of technical information that is difficult to comprehend.I have the upmost admiration for mauro di pasquale but i feel this book was written with medical practitioners in mind and not average bodybuilders
A Must Read For All Athletes Wanting That Extra Edge.......1999-09-17
Not just what to take but how and when to take it. You must learn when and how to take supplements for them to benifit you.
