The spectacular events of the '98 baseball summer forced some people's imaginations to ponder both undreamed-of numbers and a pair of immense shadows cast from the Yankee past. If Roger Maris's 61 in '61 was the stuff of legend, that the mighty Ruth had clobbered his inconceivable 60 in 1927 entered immediately into the national consciousness as the stuff of full-blown myth. Indeed, so much myth swirls around the Babe that reality is often captive to the fable. Not here, though. Relying heavily on contemporary newspaper accounts of the daily progress of the '27 season, Robertson goes to bat for the truth in this fascinating and well-conceived compendium of research and analysis that also examines Ruth's complex and often testy relationship with teammate Lou Gehrig. Every game in which Ruth popped one comes with a full box score and some kind of historical and baseball context attached. The whole year, in fact, resonates with the larger context of Lindbergh, Coolidge's decision not to run, the Sacco and Vanzetti executions, and The Jazz Singer's heralding the talkies. Such perspective carries with it immediacy; as Ruthian as the Ruth fable is in the end, Robertson makes it feel like it happened just yesterday. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Homer-by-homer, this heavily researched work recounts the inimitable Babe Ruth's finest season. In that magical 1927 season, Ruth blasted homers off 33 different pitchers and hit at least one against every American League opponent. Two hurlers yielded four homers each to the Bambino, while seven pitchers allowed at least three. Interwoven with this recounting is the story of the budding rivalry between Ruth and teammate Lou Gehrig, as the two Yankees matched homers for much of the season. Fresh statistical analyses are provided and boxscores are included for all games in which Ruth hit a home run.

GOOD JOB DESCRIBING THE CHASE FOR 60.......2002-11-09
THE AUTHOR DOES A VERY JOB DESCRIBING BABE'S ASSULT ON 60 HOMERS IN 1927. HE GIVES US MANY FACTS ON TEAMATES, PENNANT RACE, AND BASEBALL IN GENERAL DURING THIS SEASON. ALSO SOME FACTS ON THE BABE'S LIFE ARE ALSO PRESENTED. MR ROBERTSON DOES A GREAT JOB, AND THIS IS WELL WORTH READING BY HISTORIANS AND YANKEE FANS. THE ONLY REAL NEGATIVE IS I HAD HOPED IT CONTAINED SOME PICS, BUT STILL HIGH QUALITY READING. VERY RECOMMENDED.

Book Description
This book focuses on the micro-political implications of the work of Gilles Deleuze (and Félix Guattari). General philosophical articles are coupled to more specific analyses of films (such as Fight Club and Schindler's List) and other expressions of contemporary culture. The choice of giving specific attention to the analyses of images and sounds is not only related to the fact that audiovisual products are increasingly dominant in contemporary life, but also to the fact that film culture in itself is changing ("in transition") in capitalist culture. From a marginal place at the periphery of economy and culture at large, audiovisual products (ranging from art to ads) seem to have moved to the centre of the network society, as Manuel Castells calls contemporary society. Typical Deleuzian concepts such as micro-politics, the Body without Organs, becoming-minoritarian, pragmatics and immanence are explored in their philosophical implications and political force, whether utopian or dystopian. What can we do with Deleuze in contemporary media culture? A recurring issue throughout the book is the relationship between theory and practice, to which several solutions and problems are given.

Remember when Diana Ross felt up Lil' Kim on live television? When Chuck D interviewed Strom Thurmond? When Madonna's breasts exploded from her bustier on the first MTV Music Awards? When Nirvana trashed Kurt Loder's hotel room? When Radiohead's Thom Yorke almost drowned on MTV Beach House by diving into a pool with combat boots? When Tabitha Soren appeared in the Beastie Boys' "Fight for Your Right" video. Or when she swatted Bill Clinton's hand away when he patted her head? When Downtown Julie Brown carried on like the lost Gabor sister? When Florence Henderson flashed her fuzz-enhanced armpits in a parody of Basic Instinct?
You'll remember it all in living color if you read the sassy, flashy MTV Uncensored, the network's 20th-birthday present to its fans (and itself). More stars than there are beds in rehab offer their irreverent reminiscences, and sumptuous images by the greats of pop-culture photography jostle with spontaneous onscreen and backstage shots grabbed from video history while it was happening. I wish there were captions for the kazillion images, even if it had to be an index in tiny type at the back. But if you're hip, you'll recognize at least 99 percent of the faces. I also wish there was a longish introductory essay or a through line of historical narrative in addition to the profusion of punchy quotes and "20 Questions for 20 Years" celeb insta-interviews. But that wouldn't be very rock & roll, would it? One old-timer interviewed in the book says that working at MTV is "the most fun you can have with your clothes on." MTV Uncensored is the most fun you can have with your TV off. --Tim Appelo

it could have been a contender?.......2003-04-19
Good news; the book has a ton full color pictures.
Bad news; NO organization. seems like someone decided to throw a bunch of photos together. the least they could do is put in chronological order, but that didn't happen. how about captions to tell readers what each photo is?
Overall; If you like staring at photos, then go ahead. If you like picture books with CONTENT, then look for something else.
A Cool Guide to the MTV Revolution.......2002-08-28
There are lots of coffee-table books, but this might need to be called a triple espresso table book! This is a wonderful book for a number of audiences, and not just fans of MTV. Young and old music fans, pop culture fans, history fans, celebrity worshippers, and even fans of photography and design will all love this book. I bought it mostly because of its look, feel, and page after page of incredible photography. But it's also a nice extension of the too-hot-to-be-cool excitement of MTV. A perfect gift idea, too; get one for anybody cool.
It's full of behind-the-scenes peeks and fun oral histories from VJs, performers, interns, etc. You'll have a great time seeing the 20-year history of MTV, whether or not you grew up with Duran Duran, Justin Timberlake, Julie Brown or Snoop. The book proves that MTV hasn't just changed music, it has changed all media.
My heart was a flutter.......2002-06-14
I once saw Jacob Hoye coming out of Webster Hall. He was wearing sunglasses at night! He had just played a show with his band, Straw Dogs. He was surrounded by groupies. At first I was too afraid to ask him for an autograph. But then I worked up the nerve. He was a true gentleman. He was as glamorous and handsome as the many rock stars featured in his splendid book.
OK if You're... Old.......2002-03-15
Remember when MTV began?
Well, I DON'T! That's why this book is boring to me. They're trying, apparently, to market it to teens, but it's not really a teen's book. There are a few pictures of today's pop stars, but it's mostly stuff from the '80s/early '90s. *Yawn*
MTV Books?!?!.......2001-11-24
What a great idea! it's about time the top network for young people but out a book or two. teens need to read more.

Everything you wanted to know and more.......2007-02-19
The only reason I didn't give this guide 5 stars is because the table of contents isn't set up very well. But it has tons of information to make a happy Sim or wreck havoc on the town!
Great expansion for Sims2.......2007-01-05
This was my 1st expansion pack that I bought to use w/Sims2 & it is a good look at what going to college is like, especially if you've never been the kind of person who never stayed on campus. This game shows all the kinds of ways for you sim to meet new people & socialize. The different places where you can do study or reasearch. This was my 1st choice when I looked at all the other expansion packs. I read what the other recommendations said & based my decision on that.
You need this if you want to get the most out of your game.......2006-12-25
There are things in the game that you just can't figure out on your own. This book will show you everything.
Total Time Saver.......2006-10-10
As other reviewers have noted, this guide does contain a complete reprint of the original game guide. However, having owned the original guide, there is one MAJOR difference. The University Guide has an INDEX. So if you share my frustration of constantly flipping through guides searching for a topic, this is definitely worth the money. The game is time-consuming enough without having to spend time searching through the guides. So even if you don't own the University Expansion Pack, I recommend purchasing this item if only to make the original guide easier to use and the information more accessible.
Worth it if you don't have the first guide!.......2006-10-07
I have been playing the Sims for sometime now and decided to get a guide for it. Having read the reviews and owning all the major expansion packs I decided to go for this one mainly because of the two for one deal. I have been amazed the amount of information it has been able to give me even though I have been playing for so long. The tips on personalities and careers etc I have found useful. I have really been able to maximize the game play. In the past I have always been doubtful whether guides were worth there money or was just a gimmick. But having now got the Sims University guide I would recommend it (but only if you don't have the first one). I am now considering buying others and discovering what other treats I have been missing.
Book Description
For centuries, the story of the Atlantic slave trade has been filtered through the eyes and records of white Europeans. In this watershed book, historian Anne C. Bailey focuses on memories of the trade from the African perspective. African chiefs and other elders in an area of southeastern Ghana-once famously called "the Old Slave Coast"-share stories that reveal that Africans were traders as well as victims of the trade. Bailey argues that, like victims of trauma, many African societies now experience a fragmented view of their past that partially explains the blanket of silence and shame around the slave trade. Capturing scores of oral histories that were handed down through generations, Bailey finds that, although Africans were not equal partners with Europeans, even their partial involvement in the slave trade had devastating consequences on their history and identity. In this unprecedented and revelatory book, Bailey explores the delicate and fragmented nature of historical memory.

Absolutely great book........2007-04-12
African Voices of the Atlantic Slave Trade: Beyond the Silence and the Shame
Fascinating material, but flawed writing style........2006-02-09
This book is quite enlightening in the history of the African slave trade. Contrary to what one might expect from the title and reviews, the author does not solely rely on oral stories from African elders. The stories that the author quotes, though, are always interesting. Especially, the Africans involvement with the slavery.
Of course, a story is just that, a story. As with many long told stories, there will be many aspects of truth and nontruth. That is not to say that any of the legends told were lies. They will contain versions of events as told by people who were not witness to the event. It is like the child's party game of "telephone." You start with a story at one end of the line and watch how it changes by the time it reaches the last person. Changes are inevitable, although, the basic premise may be intact.
Still, the author provides a useful addition to the literature. So often, the African slave trade discussion is limited to what occurred in America. This book provides stories and facts of the rudimentary aspects of the slave trade such as the problems with shippers obtaining insurance, and the changes in ships designs.
The book informed me on other aspects of the slave trade that I had not known. For example, the international outlawing of the slave transportation did not result in a lessening, but a sharp increase in Atlantic transportation of slaves. Also, the profits arising from slave trading after abolishing were far above what I would have expected. The author too was clearly stunned. That said, the major flaw in this book is that it is so dryly written. Her method of presenting the material is as if one were listening to a dictation. An odd presentation for such an emotional and significant topic.
A hard-hitting alternative history.......2005-07-04
There has long been silence on the issue of slavery and the Atlantic Slave trade: author Anne Bailey experienced this silence growing up in Jamaica, and as an adult became determined to break this silence, first researching the topic, than interviewing chiefs and elders in Ghana. African Voices Of The Atlantic Slave Trade: Beyond The Silence And The Shame focuses on the Anlo Ewe community in Ghana to examine the impact of slavery and slave traders, showing how the trade became unpredictable and moved from the control of Africans to the control of outsiders. Oral narratives reveal why Africans began selling others into transatlantic slavery, providing a hard-hitting alternative history.

A Great history of Peru.......2007-02-13
A Brief history of Peru covers the entire history in a succinct and efficient manor. While it would be nice if a little more attention was paid to Manco Inca's rebellion and the importance of Bolivar; the book still succeeds in painting a picture of Peru's prosperity. The writing is very clear and well done showing how dictatorships rose and the military and civilian powers grew apart. This book also covers the Shining Path terrorist organization in very good detail setting the stage for the modern era in Peru. The confusion that the country is now gripped in is truly astounding. From violence on all sides to the election of the first Indian president the country is set for historic changes. Those who want to understand how Peru formed into the nation it is today will be well served by this book.

This Second Edition of Modern High-Power Rocketry contains more than 800 photographs and illustrations specifically created to introduce the model rocket enthusiast to the exciting world of high power. Completely rewritten, photographed and designed, this book provides tips and simple advice on motor retention, ejection charges, the high-power launch and building your first Level One, Level Two and Level Three rockets.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for any rocketry enthusiast.......2007-01-18
This is the most comprehensive resource for mid & high power rocketry I have ever seen! Very easy to read and chock full of excellent diagrams and photographs. I very highly recommend this book for rocketry enthusiasts of any skill level.
High Power Rocketry Introduction.......2006-11-13
Model rocketry has come a long way since the National Association of Rocketry first organized the hobby. This book is a good reference for those with basic model rocketry experience looking for information of how to get involved with high power model rocketry. The book does a great job of covering the basics of "How to get started" while addressing the new set of issues (electronics, construction, recovery, motor assembly, etc) involved with high power model rocketry. The book does not cover much, if any, of the ever changing regulatory requirements associated with high power rocketry. Despite that, the references to other hobby resources make this a good reference for those seeking to 'take the next step' in model rocketry or just understand what it requires and wait for the regulatory environment to stabilize. Illustrations of the 'hows and whys' are helpful. The book offers "rules of thumb" one can use if science and math are not as interesting as building and safely launching a cool model rocket. A strong reference in my model rocketry library.
All you need to succeed.......2006-08-29
Don't bother picking up any other books, this guide will show you how to be successful in attaining your level 1, 2 and 3 certification flights. There's plenty of design theory, tips, tricks and techniques that will save you time and money and have you looking like a pro at the launch pad. You will be inspired by featured camera carrying rockets and "full scale" rockets that produce thousands of pounds of thrust. This guide does touch on hybrid motors but focuses mainly on reloadable solid fuel propellant motors like those available from Aerotech and Animal Works etc.
This guide extensively covers, altimeters, timers and the construction of altimeter bays, ejection charges and dual-deployment recovery systems, motor clustering and performance igniters, motor assembly and cleaning, launch pad procedures, as well as introduces the reader into the world of scratch building and minimum diameter rockets. Get this book and get building!
The Definative Guide for HPR.......2006-06-26
I've been launching model rockets for 20 years, but had been wanting to make the leap to HPR for some time now. This book helped me make the transition and evaluate what gear I need to modify vs upgrade. Generally, it answers all your questions about HPR and is a great reference for those wanting to make the move from model to M/HPR.
This book seems to be the encyclopedia of HPR. Great to keep on hand to answer any of your HPR questions.
Tweeks
Could be much better.......2006-06-18
If you want to learn all about the two "offical" rocket organizations - the NAR and Tripoli, then this is definitely the book for you. A full 20% (at least) of the book is taken up in references, forms, rules, events, etc. of these two organizations. Not only that, but it seemed like every second paragraph contains another reference to them. This is not to take away the importance of these two fine organizations. They do a lot of good for the hobby of rockets and are involved in litigation to perserve our right to continue the sport. Its just that one paragraph would have been sufficient to alert the reader that these organizations exist, and perhaps a reference to their web pages. This is supposed to be a construction manual, not a propaganda vehicle for these organizations.
If you want to learn how to build a high powered rocket (without the motor), this book will at least give you a reasonable start. If you are interested in designing your own rocket motor also (as I was) you will find nothing whatsoever in this book. No design, no formulii for fuel compositions, no nothing.

Book Description
This book explains how our genes work, and how they are adversely impacted by a huge range of factors in modern society in both the countries of the North and the South. These include toxic industrial and agricultural chemicals, excessive sunlight (as a result of the hole in the ozone layer), nuclear radiation from power plants and the military, as well as other forms of radiation (mobile phones, electricity transmission systems and the like), food contaminants, atmospheric pollutants (including things like tobacco smoke and car exhaust fumes), and the potential impact of genetic engineering.
