Book Description
The son of a village nail maker, Joseph Bouchayer forged a new identity in Grenoble and left as his legacy a thriving metalworking firm--Bouchayer et Viallet. His sons made this enterprise the dominant French producer of pipelines for the hydroelectric industry before 1914. As the Bouchayers became grands bourgeois, however, leisure, largesse, and individual prowess gradually displaced work, frugality, and family ties as core values. Without imaginative entrepreneurship after 1930, the firm lost momentum and finally terminated its century-old manufacturing operations in 1970.
In The Bouchayers of Grenoble and French Industrial Enterprise, 1850-1970, historian Robert J. Smith explores a classic trajectory reminiscent of Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks. Drawing on family papers and business records spanning four generations, this narrative of the ascent of the Bouchayers and the eventual decline of their firm illuminates the complex relationship between family and class in the formation of modern industrial economies. Because France remained an essentially rural society until the twentieth century, its industrial development depended heavily on peasants and artisans who entered the middle class by founding family firms. An elusive thread in French history, the rise and fall of such firms reveals what was at stake for individuals, families, and enterprise in the transition to modernity.

Co-author needed.......2006-04-05
Any analysis that examines at the intersections of oppression (in this case speciesism and sexism) is important. Unfortunately, Adams is a scattered, non-linear thinker. Her writing is convoluted and fragmented. If a reader is neither a passionate animal rights advocate nor committed to an anti-pornography perspective, s/he is not likely to be very tolerant of the poor writing. As such, most readers who finish this book are probably already members of the choir. This is unfortunate. I hope Adams finds an articulate co-author for her next book. I give four stars for the ideas in the book, and I give two stars for the writing.
i saw her speak at cornell.......2005-11-20
Admittedly, I have not read this book, but I stumbled upon her slideshow/lecture on campus recently, and I definitely do not plan to persue her theory. The connections between sex and meat in the advertising industry seem rather obvious to me. I guess it's nice that she's been devoting so much time to collecting these images, but it's really not anything terribly enlightening. Her approach is not very academic, she has invented some pseudo-intellectual "A" and "not-A" categorization, which is again, rather elementary. (Granted, I saw Judith Butler speak the same evening, so the contrast was all the more painful). After her lecture, she was outright rude to a man who wished to respectfully argue with her, then proceeded to push the Bible as her underlying evidence that animals have souls and we should not eat them. Also, her sense of feminism leans a lot more toward femi-nazi-ism, aka one of those feminists who tries to make it a life style rather than a political movement, aka she probably thinks porn is inherently degrading to women. Anyway, as a feminist (in the legal gender equality sense) NON-Christian pescatarian, I was hoping her lecture would be an interesting academic arguement, but I was seriously disappointed. She really gives feminist vegetarians a bad name.
Sex and violence selling each other.......2003-12-09
This more easily digestible offering from Carol J. Adams, furthers the provocative argument put forward in "The Sexual Politics of Meat" -- that meat eating is an intrinsic part of a patriarchal society.
Adam's tells us,
"Before someone can be consumed or used, she has to be seen as consumable, as usable, as a something instead of a someone."
In other words, in order to enjoy pornography, we must forget that the body we are watching is that of a full person who might want to be somewhere other than in front of the camera, naked. And in order to enjoy meat, we must not think of the life of the animal who would rather be out in a field guarding her offspring, than on our plate. Rather, we must think of both as consumable objects.
The book is full of visual images that make that link for us. For example, on page 14, we see a roasted chicken, photographed from above, wings crossed behind what should be the head but is the severed neck. A bikini has been painted on the carcass, so we have the impression of a sunbathing woman, roasting in the sun. A link is clearly being drawn between two consumable objects.
Adams shares many fascinating images from popular culture in which animals are feminized and women are animalized. Sometimes the analogies are clear, sometimes I find them too much of a stretch. But the pictures and arguments are all thought-provoking. 'The Pornography of Meat' is short and easy to read. It would make a great holiday gift for anybody with an interest in feminism.
I love animals..........2003-12-05
As a person concerned and active in animal rights work, I find this sort of rant abominable.
Publishing this whack-job does as much is doing as much for animal rights and women as Oliver Stone has done in "solving" JFK's murder.
The idea that this is scholarship is an embarassment to anyone with a brain. A lot of mumbo-jumbo and bad semiotics and flimsy Deconstructionist lit-crit nonsense.
It's too bad that hacks like this get encouraged. The saddest thing is, this moron probably at one time had a decent brain, a caring heart, and the best of intentions.
Flipping through it is like watching the train wreck of modern education.
One can only hope the reading public will put her out of her writing misery.
A Wake Up Call, So Simple, No One Can Refute.......2003-11-20
Carol J. Adams is a brilliant thinker. In this book, she takes a complex, emotional subject and breaks it down to basic terms that everyone can understand. The point becomes so painfully obvious that it is irrefutable. We have all been seduced by the pornography of meat, even women and we are the objectified class! When we see other beings (human or animal) as simply "parts", it is easier to use and abuse them. Domination of "others" seems to come from fear.
We are all, in some form, still operating in our sleep -- unaware of the manipulation. It's time to WAKE UP and this book is an amazing tool that can help.

Need something different, something fun!!!.......2003-11-17
Tired of thinking inside the box? Do you have a need the shake things up a little? Need a good old fashioned laugh? Well this little book of mind benders will do it for you.
If your one of those 1+1=2 people and need a little diversion that will take you into the creative side of your brain this is it. It's fun and makes you think in other directions other than black and white.
I admit I bought this on a whim at the 'Discovery' store. It was at the check out counter beckoning me to pick it up knowing very well I would buy it. I'm such a sucker for checkout counter marketing.

Book Description
Play supergames for the super-smart. These mind-blowing, brain-bending puzzles use a deviously tricky mix of geometry and combinatronics (the different ways objects can be arranged), and emphasize structure, pattern, and color. Everything’s visual and as enticing to the eye as to the wits. Try to solve the Impossible Domino Bridge Problem: at first glance, the top-heavy structure looks as if it would just tumble. But give it some thought and you’ll realize that not only can it be built but that you can build it yourself. Take the Ingenious Tangram Challenge; put together a Stars Puzzle; and Draw, Halve, and Quarter all the rooms in a house into equal-size spaces. There’s illuminating background information on the puzzles’ origins, too.

Customer Reviews:
Palm Handheld,Fifth Edition.......2006-07-10
In general the book is well organized and lucid. It is easy to read and useful. The only drawback I found was that the Palm T/X is not covered.
Save a tree.......2006-05-30
Agree with the others, a well-organized, pretty, but no-depth, chitty-chatty "Dummies" rendition of the manual. For people who like reading about using technology, rather than people who are trying to solve a organizational problem. Read the PDF version of the manual and save a tree.
Don't waste your time........2006-05-12
I do not usually leave comments about purchases but this Johnson/Broida offering is so dismal it deserves a mention. You will be much better off with Palm's online documentation/help files and forget about wasting your money on this turkey. Truly a real disappointment.
No fault for Amazon....delivery was, as usual, very fast
Better than others of its kind, but still basic.......2006-04-24
This is for a new or unsophisticated user of Palm OS devices. There really isn't anything here that can't be found in the Palm reference manual or in the online Palm forums.
But everything is presented in a crisp manner with more than adequate illustrations. And it really does cover literally everything the average user can do with the Palm OS.
Someone new to Palm or those who have hesitated to explore the boundaries of the Palm OS will find this book helpful, more helpful than many others of the same kind.

Save your money.......2005-12-15
The title says "How". There does not appear to be a lot of that inside this book. There is a lot of "jive stuff" between or about the authors that could have been better spent doing more of the "How" instead of the "jive". I have read a lot of technical and software books in the last 30 years and this one goes to the bottom of the list.
Book Description
The Tower of London is one of the most famous and well-visited landmarks in the world, with a fascinating history brought to life in a uniquely visual way for the first time through this stunning book. 14 specially commissioned paintings by the renowned historical reconstruction artist, Ivan Lapper show the Tower from its earliest pre-Roman days, right up to the start of this new millennium. A fascinating and engaging narrative by the official Keeper of Tower History, Geoffrey Parnell, brings the sights, sounds, events and characters of the past to life.

Informative study of Native American history.......2006-04-26
I just finished a class on Native American history. The use of the text "First Peoples: A Documentary Survey of American Indian History," by Calloway was very informative. I found that the book expressed the true history of the Native American people. As I read the different chapters, I found my self able to clearly picture the different events that took place. This is coming from a person who purposely saved my history requirement until my second to last class to graduate from college. I have never enjoyed history. This book really changed my views on history!
Great Read.......2005-08-11
A very effective survey of the Native tribes in America from before the whites until present times. The book provided a lot of information regarding the legal fights of the tribes over times, which I found to be very interesting. This includes governmental policies, including the gaming issues. Also, how the tribes have hung onto their culture and identity, which was equally interesting. It was interesting to read of hte mascot issue at the end of the book as well, due to the current issues dealing with them.
Calloway also includes many legal documents which give a greater insight to the happenings of the time. These documents also help to see the issues from both points of view, native and white.
Outstanding textbook about Native American History.......2000-08-02
This was the textbook in my Native American History Class this summer at the University where I am persuing a History Degree with a minor in Teacher Certification. I must say that this is one of the best textbooks that I have used since I began college. The author has taken a wide and complex field of Native American (Indian) History and has effectively narrowed it to interesting and important events. This is a textbook that reads very well. The tragic story of the Native American is told with sensitivity and accuracy. From the beginning of recorded American Indian History to the tragic consequences of dealing with European Invaders-Explorers and its aftermath. The accounts of the Colonial Indians, 5 Civilized Tribes, Indian Wars to present day wounded knee, and so much more are given excellent focus to the student/reader. I highly recommend this book to any Professor who will teach Native American History.

Great content but mediocre binding.......2007-10-05
Love the contents of these books. Truly a classic that stands up well today. Unfortunately Dover chose to reissue these books as trade-press sized books with standard paperback bindings (along with the usual downsides of glue binding). Would have been great to give them a little better treatment (at least a lay-flat binding) for longevity and ease of reading.
Complete listing of contents now available.......2007-04-27
We have posted the contents for all four volumes of this classic on "Amapedia", Amazon's wiki for additional product information. (The link is near the bottom of this Amazon product page, hidden in plain sight.)
Excellent collection of original sources.......2006-01-28
I owned a hardcover version of this set for several years. I loved it. I wish I had thought of penciling in the date I completed an article like the reviewer from Texas. This set is engrossing. You need some discipline to keep from bouncing around for hours. Most of the articles are accessible to people with highschool trigonometry and calculus. It is great that Dover is around to pick up these works that would otherwise fade into history.
Great Authors, Great Articles, Great Fun.......2005-09-13
I pencil in the date that I finish reading an article in James R. Newman's four volume, The World of Mathematics. After a good many years, I now find that I am more than halfway through Newman's remarkable collection that spans 2500 pages. The Newman collection was published in 1956 as a hard cover boxed set that occasionally shows up in used bookstores. More recently, the four volumes have become available in soft cover reprints (Dover Publications) that can be purchased individually.
Newman described his work as "a small library of the literature of mathematics form A'hmose the Scribe to Albert Einstein, presented with commentaries and notes". The individual articles are not abridgements, but are reprinted in their entirety. Some are short, others quite long, a few are easy reading, some are difficult, but none are overwhelming. Each article is introduced by a thoughtful, helpful commentary.
I do not systematically read section by section. I skip around. Often, after Newman introduces me to some mathematical topic, I find myself sidetracked, exploring other books and authors. But eventually I return, select another article, and begin the cycle again.
What makes Newman collection so remarkable? Great original papers, great authors, and wide ranging topics.
Imagine reading Descartes on Cartesian coordinates, Whitehead on mathematical logic, Weyl on symmetry, Dedekind on irrational numbers, Russell on number theory, Heisenberg on the uncertainty principle, Turing on computer intelligence, Boole on set theory, and Eddington on group theory. Biographical and historical articles are scattered throughout. I especially liked Bell's article Invariant Twins: Cayley and Sylvester, and The Great Mathematicians by Turnball.
In some articles noted mathematicians try to define what is mathematical thought and how a mathematician creates mathematics. Clifford writes about The Exactness of Mathematical Laws, Von Neumann on The Mathematician, Weyl on Mathematical Way of Thinking, Poincare on Mathematical Creation, Newman on Godel's Proof, and Russell and Whitehead separately offer their thoughts on mathematical creativity. And, of course, there is G. H. Hardy's remarkable essay, A Mathematician's Apology.
Newman's compilation also includes a fascinating, eclectic mix of articles like How to Hunt a Submarine, Durer as a Mathematician, A Mathematical Approach to Ethics, Geometry in the South Pacific, and The Vice of Gambling and the Virtue of Insurance.
I have had great fun wandering through Newman's four volume set. I may someday finally read the last article. If so, I expect that I will simply begin again. It would be hard to say good-bye.

This book is the result of the participation of 26 experts involved with the management of freshwater resources from Africa, Europe, North and South America, Asia and Oceania. Their experiences on the causes and possible ways to prevent eutrophication have been assembled here. While this publication is not intended to be a technical manual on how to prevent or solve the problem of eutrophication, it does provide a comprehensive view of the essential components and processes to address the issue effectively.

Description:
After damming of the Yangtze River, in order to explore the impacts of the Three-Gorge Dam (TGD) on the aquatic ecosystem, phytoplankton composition, abundance and biomass spatial distribution were studied in the Three-Gorge Reservoir (TGR), and the closest upstream anabranch Xiangxi River, which is 38 km away from the Three-Gorge Dam (TGD) during August (rainy season) 2004 and April (dry season) 2005. In surveys, 6 transects (2 downstream and 4 cross-stream) and 25 stations have been investigated and 314 samples were collected from the surface to the river bed with water samplers. In TGR, 63 taxa and 60 taxa were identified in the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. In the Xiangxi River, 39 taxa were observed in the rainy and dry seasons. Algal blooms occurred in the Xiangxi River and at the influx region of the Yangtze and Xiangxi in both seasons, but had not occurred prior to damming. In the rainy season, the dominant species was Chroomonas acuta with 1.84x10^7 cells l^-^1, and in the dry season the dominant species were Asterionella formosa and Cryptomonas ovata with 1.34x10^7 cells l^-^1 and 1.79x10^6 cells.l^-^1, respectively. In the main channel of TGR, there were no significant correlations between phytoplankton abundance and the concentrations of the main soluble nutrients. In the Xiangxi River, significant negative correlations were observed between phytoplankton abundance and nitrate (Spearman, p
<0.01, n=21), phosphate (Spearman, p
<0.05, n=21) and silicate (Spearman, p
<0.01, n=21) in the rainy season, and similar correlations were also observed with nitrate (Spearman, p
<0.05, n=28) and silicate (Spearman, p
<0.01, n=28), but not with phosphate in the dry season. Since the damming of the Yangtze River, eutrophication in the anabranch within the backwater has occurred and become severe, and the frequency of algal bloom within TGR and anabranches is expected to increase.
