Corporate biography, bought and paid for by the corporation........2000-09-26
John Gurda is a pretty good writer of coherent sentences, tidy paragraphs and nicly titled chapters. And he takes dictation like a champ.
But the success of this book--sales of 10,000 copies since publication in 1992--means only that hordes of proposal writers (or "grant" writers, as they like to bill themselves) have been combing it for hints on how to pry loose a grant from the Bradley Foundation. The work was commissioned by this intensely conservative foundation which disperses the yearly earning from the modest pile (roughly a half billion dollars) the Bradleys left to promote the troglodite social philosophy they had lived by.
They paid Gurda to write this book. There are significant omissions and distortions. How could it be otherwise?
Next up: contract scrivening for Northwestern Mutual Life, another home town company with a story to tell.
Book Description
He has been cursed since age 15, carrying always the appositive affixed eternally to his name--the youngest pitcher in major league baseball. And yet the Joe Nuxhall story neither begins nor ends with the appositive. Baseball, in fact, may not even have been his best sport. He was a high school fullback, big and fast and good enough to be All-State, and he was unquestionably the best schoolboy basketball center in Ohio. He had pitched ten no-hitters before he was 15, however, and when he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds that historic time, he first had to get permission from his 9th grade principal, and ferried himself to Crosley Field and back, alone, on the bus. It was not, as history tells us, an auspicious occasion (an ERA of 67.50), but it launched the remarkable career of perhaps the best-loved and most enduring sports figure Cincinnati has ever seen. Noted sportscaster Greg Hoard's new biography, Joe, dramatically paints the Depression era background of "Hamilton Joe," closing industrial league games for his athletic father when the boy was barely a teenager, facing feared veteran slugger Stan Musial his first time up, and on to Birmingham, where he watched, astounded, while a lanky Negro pitcher named Satchel Paige warmed up by throwing strikes across a piece of chewing gum tinfoil. "The Old Left-Hander" pitched twenty-two seasons of professional baseball, including an All-Star year in 1955 when he led the league in shut-outs, and even when he retired to the broadcasting booth, he was still pitching batting practice. Greg Hoard's tale of baseball's last great innocent is the story of a charmed life, in which a blue-collar kid from a gritty industrial town, by great athleticism and a disarming guilelessness, found himself an enduring legend.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyment value is not much - Gets a 1 rating if you're not a Reds' fan.......2006-11-01
I grew up watching Joe pitch. Lots of pictures in the book, but it could have been much better written. Not that much about his major league career. Mostly about his life up to making the big leagues. If you're a Reds' fan you may want to read the book, but don't make it a priority or buy the book. If you're not a Reds' fan, don't bother.
Reds Fan Must Have.......2006-07-10
If you are a true Cincinnati Reds fan or even a Major League Baseball fan you must get this book. It is a biography of a baseball star. The writer didn't just write the book as he saw it he interviewed anyone and everyone that might have had contact with Joe Nuxhall throughout his life and carreer.
The best of Baseball and a Hometown.......2006-06-02
I purchased the book for a younger brother, knowing the Hamilton hometown scenes and connection would interest him. However, I couldn't put the book down. It was thrilling to hear of Joe's encounters with the Big League greats of the glory days of baseball. Greg Hoard's writing is clear and descriptive and moves you right along with it. This would be a good story if it were fiction. As a true narrative, it's fun and inspiring. It's easy to like Joe and it's easy to like this book.
A great baseball story.......2006-04-26
I thought I had pretty much heard all there was to hear about Joe, but I was way wrong. This book never got old because while Joe stated the obvious, he also took care to let us in on other things that happened at the same time. Everyone knows that Joe gave up his high school elgibility to sign with the Reds at the age of 14, but how many know that he later successfully petitioned to have his elgibility returned? That he was an all around athlete at Hamilton High? That he had a sister who died as a toddler? I didn't, but now I do. The minor league stories were the highlight of the book for me, but this is a recommended read for anyone who ever tuned into a Reds game on 700 WLW during one of the stretches where Joe had decided to punctuate the action with a long moment of silence, (Do I have this tuned right, or what?) or tried to figure out what was going on when the action was coming fast. You had to grow up with it to really appreciate it. Great book.

Effective software tuition.......2007-07-26
This is a 750 page, 9 chapter guide to learning how to use Inventor 10.
The cover categorises the user level as beginner-intermediate, and that assessment seems realistic.
I have so far worked through 4 chapters/200 pages. Each chapter has taken about 3-4 hours to read the information, and do the exercises. The later chapters are longer. The layout is generally clear, logical and comprehensible.
The only exception is chapter one, which required several readings and revisits before I started to make sense of the file types and file organisation.
The attached CD installed and worked without a hitch.
The exercises so far are fairly easy, and interesting, and nicely demonstrate the intended points.
The user interface of Inventor 10 bears little resemblance to AutoCAD, and AutoCAD users will require an open mindset to learn how to use it. For a start, there is no command line. It is almost entirely mouse controlled, with some input from keyboard shortcuts and function keys.
The book itself has a quality feel, and despite its 750 pages, is easy to handle. The index is comprehensive. I expect that it will be a very useful reference manual.
I have used quite a few software instruction manuals over the years, and I would say that this is the most impressive one yet. Recommended.
A great Reference.......2007-05-07
The book is a great reference as well as a great knowledge center for the program. I am new to Autodesk Inventor but not CAD. The books helps greatly with location of the different features and how they operate. An excellent book.
Detailed and accurate guide to Inventor 10.......2006-07-16
This book is a combination reference and how-to manual for Inventor 10. The book is helpful for both the novice and the power-user who wishes to understand the new features of this version of the software. Although some of the material in the book is also in Inventor's help and tutorial system, there is also some helpful original material on advanced modeling techniques as well as basic sketching and modeling. The book makes generous and appropriate use of screen captures to aid in the understanding of the concepts presented. The tutorials are presented in clear numbered steps and there are exercises along the way to test your understanding of techniques and commands. These exercises appear to be helpful, complete, and accurate. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Inventor 10. The table of contents is as follows:
1. Getting Started - Talks about the "Getting Started" screen, reasons for which a project file is used, how to create a project file for a single user, different file types used in Inventor, and application options.
2 Sketching, Constraining, and Dimensioning - Teaches how to change the sketch and part options as needed, sketch the outline of a part, create geometric constraints, dimension a sketch, create dimensions using the automatic dimensioning tool, change a dimension's value in a sketch, and import AutoCAD DWG data.
3. Creating and Editing Sketched Features - Explains what a feature is, how to use the Inventor Browser to edit parts, how to extrude or revolve a sketch into a part, editing features of a part, editing the sketch of a feature, making an active sketch on a plane, and creating sketched features using the cut, join, or intersect operation.
4. Creating Placed Features - Shows how to create fillers, chamfers, holes, work axes, work points, work planes, and internal and external threads.
5. Creating and Editing Drawing Views - This chapter helps you understand the drawing options and styles. You also learn to create and edit drawing borders and title blocks. The creation of base and projected drawing views from a part is discussed as well as the creation of auxiliary, section, detail, broken, break-out, draft, and perspective views. You'll learn how to edit the properties and locations of drawing views and how to retrieve model dimensions to use in drawing views.
6. Creating and Documenting Assemblies - This chapter discusses the various assembly options, and the creation of bottom-up assemblies, top-down assemblies, subassemblies, and adaptive parts. It discusses how to constrain components together using assembly constraints, and how to edit those assembly constraints. Finally, you learn how to pattern components in an assembly.
7. Advanced Sketching and Constraining Techniques - This chapter shows how to use construction geometry to help constrain sketches. It also shows how to create an ellipse, 2D spline, and a pattern of sketch geometry. You'll learn how to share a sketch, utilize the symmetry constraint and mirror tool, slice the graphics window, sketch on another parts face, change the display of dimensions, create relationships between dimensions, create parameters, and finally create a part that is driven by an Excel spreadsheet.
8. Advanced Part Modeling Techniques - This chapter teaches you how to extrude an open profile, create ribs, webs, and rib networks, emboss text and profiles, create sweep, coil, and loft features, split parts or faces of parts, copy features within a part, and reorder those part features.
9. Sheet Metal Design - This final chapter is a "capstone" which builds on knowledge of the previous eight. You learn how to use the Inventor sheet metal environment, modify settings for the sheet metal design, create sheet metal parts, modify sheet metal parts to match design requirements, create sheet metal flat patterns, and create drawing views of a sheet metal part.
Inventor for beginners - still in the beginning of the book.......2006-02-27
I've just bought the book and have started learning Inventor 10. I started on page 1 and went on and so far it's been a great book for a person not knowing anything about Inventor. It's very educational correct, at least what I think. If this keeps up it will be a great book, so far I'm in chapter 3.
So far I can really recommend the book.
Excellent coverage of the "Essentials", and some of the "Plus".......2006-01-06
Still the best book out there for whoever is serious about learning the essentials of Autodesk Inventor 10, the basics are well covered in detail, the examples and tutorials are to the point, and the effort is honest and impressive, the "Plus" part however, could have been expanded further, Inventor 10 has a lot of new advanced features that are of great value to the engineers and designers, hopefully the authors will get together and complete their excellent work by issuing an "Advanced" book.
Book Description
Before a nation can produce, it must achieve social peace. That social peace has been reached in different nations by differing means, some of which have then been embedded in business firms, in corporate ownership patterns, and in corporate governance structures. The large publicly held, diffusely owned firm dominates business in the United States despite its infirmities, namely the frequently fragile relations between stockholders and managers. But in other economically advanced nations, ownership is not diffuse but concentrated. It is concentrated in no small measure because the delicate threads that tie managers to shareholders in the public firm fray easily in common political environments, such as those in the continental European social democracies. Social democracies press managers to stabilize employment, to forego some profit-maximizing risks with the firm, and to use up capital in place rather than to downsize when markets no longer are aligned with the firm's production capabilities. Since managers must have discretion in the public firm, how they use that discretion is crucial to stockholders, and social democratic pressures induce managers to stray farther than otherwise from their shareholders' profit-maximizing goals. Moreover, the means that align managers with diffuse stockholders in the United States-incentive compensation, hostile takeovers, and strong shareholder-wealth maximization norms-are weaker and sometimes denigrated in continental social democracies. Hence, public firms there have higher managerial agency costs, and large-block shareholding has persisted as shareholders' best remaining way to control those costs. Social democracies may enhance total social welfare, but if they do, they do so with fewer public firms than less socially responsive nations. The author therefore uncovers not only a political explanation for ownership concentration in Europe, but also a crucial political prerequisite to the rise of the public firm in the United States, namely the weakness of social democratic pressures on the American business firm.

The past and the future for Serbs.......2002-11-16
So what keeps the Serbs going? Let's look at the history.
Serbs have always risen from ashes thought their 15 century old history, while their enemies have burned out. The key was that the Serbs were defending their land, their families, and their religion - Orthodox Christianity, which in synergy with their heroic tradition gave them all the strength and endurance they needed. The mightiest superpowers of their time, which have fought the Serbs, have collapsed: Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Hitler. No, it's not the Serbs that destroyed them - the mightiest were wrong, and that is what destroyed them.
Those who don't know the history are doomed to repeat it, and they are repeating it buy pursuing greed, lies, and crime, just like their predecessors. They will either have to change, or their future will be the same as of their predecessors, guaranteed.
Review of R.G.D. Laffan's "The Serbs: Guardians of the Gate".......2000-06-29
This is a really good read for anyone interested in the history of the Serbian people of the 19th and early 20th century. It traces the evolution of Serbian national thought from medieval times to World War I and the aspirations of a united Yugoslavia, or South Slav State. The book is a compilation of lectures given by Laffan, and was originally put together in 1917, during the war. Especially moving is the tale of the hardship the Serbian people endured during the years 1912-1918. They truly were an heroic people during those years and their story is a compelling one. The book is also a source of sorrow to the reader familiar with late 20th century Serbian history, as we now know that the notes of optimism by Laffan for the future of the Serbian nation were crushed by the bloody civil wars that occurred during World War II and the 1990's.

Customer Reviews:
Great book... If only it were in English units.......2006-02-15
I am a bridge designer and in the final semester of my Masters degree. I recently purchased this book based on the recommendation of my former mentor. It is a quality book with good insite.
My only complaint, and it is a big one, is that the examples are written in SI units. For applications in the US, this makes it very difficult to reference for quick design issues. Other than that, it's a quality book.
Buy This Book For LRFD Bridge Design.......2004-11-25
I am a bridge designer with three years of design experience. I purchased this textbook for Dr. Barker's (author's) bridge design graduate course in college. This textbook, unlike so many others on the subject of bridge design, delves into the real nuts-and-bolts calculations of structural engineering. The most in-depth sections are loads, analysis, steel bridges, and concrete bridges. The two examples in the steel and concrete sections are thorough treatments. No subject is simply glossed over in this book. This entire text seems to have been written with the goal of answering common questions from both designers and students. From why various code requirements came to be, to exactly the meaning of obscure variables, most everything in the 1st to 2nd Ed. of the LRFD code was addressed. My only complaint about the text is that there are several mistakes in the calculations (particularly in the lengthly examples). However, most of these appear to have been corrected in subsequent printings.
This book is a great desk reference for bridge designers. I cannot specifically recommend it as a study guide for the PE/SE, since those exams do not use the AASHTO LRFD specifications yet. However, for designing by the AASHTO LRFD, this book can be considered the commentary that space did not allow.
As a side note, the hardback book is a nicely bound edition. The sketches, tables, and diagrams are all clear, as well as the notations used (superscripts, subscripts, Greek, etc.).
Almost a Necessity.......2004-03-31
As a Bridge Engineer trying to figure out the new LRFD Code, I found this book to be a necessity. It is comprehensive in applying the code to actual designs. The design examples are thorough, and the logic can be followed. In all, I would recommend this book to anyone trying to learn all the provisions of the new LRFD Code.
An excellant text on bridge engineering using LRFD........1999-04-01
Our office found this to be the best, and most comprehensive reference on the new LRFD Specification available. The design examples set this book apart from other references. They are as complete as any we have found. While our interest sprang from our need to learn the LRFD specification, we found that the book is a valuable tool for bridge engineering in general. Most of the designers in our office at KDOT and many of the consulting firms who work with us have a copy of this book.
Guide to new LRFD bridge design for beginner and sceptics........1999-02-03
This book offers the bridge engineer a complete guide to the new LRFD specs in metric units. It is a great tool for both the new engineer, or the skeptical veteran, leery of LRFD. It offers a brief US bridge history in its introduction, and discusses aesthetics in the beginning: where it belongs. Next the development of LRFD and its advantages over ASD is discussed and should be read (and reread) carefully by the skeptics (excellent chapter). Influence lines follow, then system design, and finally concrete and steel bridge design and examples. This book is well suited to supplement the ASSHTO code or stand alone. Also, it is truly metric, no soft conversion at all. The book is quite long, however; it does command your undivided attention if it to be learned from. I highly recommend this book.
