                      Book Description

Honus: The Life and Times of a Baseball Hero is a biographical look at the life and times of the great Honus Wagner. Not many fans know the full story of Honus Wagner, and Wagner himself was largely responsible for the public's ignorance. Being notoriously shy, he declined to talk about himself or baseball to sportswriters of his time.

                      2 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2002-02-07

This book was a bit disappointing because there really was not a lot of in-depth background information on Honus Wagner the man. Seasons were covered in five pages and, in one instance, the text reviewed one game by stating that Honus had hit, "a three-run double, but the Pirates lost 5-2." How can the Pirates lose 5-2 if Honus hit a three-run double? There seemed to be many errors of this nature in the book as the editing was not very crisp.

I tried not to be too harsh in my review as I know the material on Honus is not easy to find, but even the material that is available in the text is not presented very well. Honus Wagner was arguably the greatest player of his time and a simple, interesting person off the field, so his story is indeed an important one to baseball fans. Unfortunately, I don't think this biography is the one you want to read if you want a well-written, in-depth portrait of Honus Wagner.

5 out of 5 stars Honus: The life and Times of A Baseball Hero.......2000-07-07

I thought this book was a great biography of one of baseball's least appreciated stars. It starts with his beginnings in the mines to his death in 1955. I thought this book had too many minor details in his retirement ventures. I think this is a book that all baseball fans will enjoy.

                        Book Description

The process of producing goods and services is relatively easy to recognize as socially beneficial. But television ads? Telemarketers? Jingles? Junk mail? It is popular to view these commercial activities as inherently wasteful or manipulative, marginally informative or entertaining, at best. The most vociferous critics marshal economic and sociological data to argue that advertising dilutes culture and moral values, encourages conspicuous consumption, defrauds the public, and promotes dangerous products and behaviors. In Selling the Dream, John Hood takes the provocative stand that advertising images and sales pitches are actually part of the goods and services themselves, delivering an essential component of the consumer's experience. As such, they are inextricably linked to the basic tenets of the free-market system, and, in the boldest of terms, Hood argues that commercial communication is morally consistent with the principles of our democratic society, including freedom of choice, competition, and innovation. Tracing the history of advertising from Ancient Roman times to the present, through the first American newspaper ad in 1704, P.T. Barnum's sophisticated hucksterism in the 19th Century, and the emergence of the modern consumer society, Hood offers a colorful account of advertising in its cultural context. Moreover, he addresses such controversial issues as the promotion of harmful and "immoral" products (such as tobacco and alcohol), marketing to children, the role of advertising in service industries such as health care and education, and the impact of the Internet and other new media on the conduct of commerce. In the process, he offers a compelling perspective on advertising and its essential role in business, communication, and popular culture.

Puzzlers will feel fit to be tied—Dog Tied: If Fido is tied to a 10-foot-long rope, and his bone is 15 feet away, how is it possible that he can reach and enjoy his bone without breaking or stretching the rope? (And yes—the rope IS tied to something.) There’s fun in finding the answer to this and other cool number-based problems. Dust off your mathematics and get solving. The intriguing enigmas include questions on interstellar communications, ancient geometry (Pythagoras and Plato), and even traffic patterns in Gridlock City. Or, play the Grasshopper Jumping Game. It’s all fascinating.

                          4 out of 5 stars What a deal!.......2004-12-06

Did you know that mathematics is the only universal language we could expect intelligent aliens to understand? So says Ivan Moscovich, the designer of these puzzles and games which provide a learning experience that he calls "recreational mathematics." The title problem, one of dozens of puzzles within this collection, is the famous Monty Hall problem, which was popularized by Marilyn vos Savant in her Parade Magazine column. While being deceptively simple, its answer is surprising and counterintuitive. You would be amazed at how many people will not accept the correct answer! This puzzle alone, along with the solver's understanding of its solution, is worth the price of the book.

Interspersed among the puzzles in this collection are fascinating facts about such things as the number pi and how far a flea can jump at a single bound. The answer pages provide not only solutions, but explanations for the answers that use simple principles of mathematics. These puzzles are not just challenging and educational, but they are also a visual treat, since each puzzle has one or more colorful and beautiful illustrations. Some of these puzzles are very tricky, but that makes discovering the solution all the more rewarding. Enjoy!

We bought this book for my six year old who has a Game Boy Advance Leaf Green Pokemon game. This is what he has to say about the book: I really like it. It helps you beat the game. It has cheat sheets that teach you what to do in certain situations. I would like more words to explain the maps instead of just pictures. Overall it is a great book and I would recommend it.

the guide is full of typos and misinformation. the pokedex in the back is very weak. it shows no stats for any pokemon. it only has what moves they learn (of which many of them are typos) it also doesn't have what a nature does to a pokemon. (in other words, it doesn't tell what stat a nature hurts and helps) it also is missing a list of all the moves in the game. it only has the 50 TMs, but the other moves (non TM and HM) are not in the book. i have to use 2 other guides to make up for this. the only use for this guide is to find items, however, it's not worth it since there is no other information what-so-ever.

I was so happy when I got this book as I have been restoring a couple Chris's for the last several years. But was dissapointed after thumbing through it. There a very few pictures of the different models, infact the illustrator seems to have used the same 4 boats throughout the whole text, with slight exception. The history material is excellent dry reading witha lot of facts most people are unaware of. Every model is listed in the book but sometimes so briefly the reference has no value. All Chris Craft owners should have this on their coffee table or aboard their boat.

The legend of Chris craft is a masterpiece by both the author and publisher that should be made available to our all of our citizens.

The problem as I see it,is, its a best kept secret, not enough marketing, even long time Chris Craft owners do not know of its existence.

I was thoroughly impressed with the scholarly research obviously conducted for the writing of this book. The early years especially are covered with a thorough attention to the personalities that built what used to be America's premier pleasure craft builder. The last half of the book will be especially useful for owners of newer Chris Crafts as every single boat is mentioned in its model year and the lines are extensively covered. I also really liked the cover.

3 out of 5 stars Informative book on the men and the company behind the boats.......1997-12-28

The history that made one of Americas most sucessful boat companies is excellent. The intrigues and negotiations leading up to the founder family parting with their company is great reading and the coverage of the early racing boats leaves little to be desired. The coverage of the massproduced boats is however less informative. The vast majority of the boats designed are only referred to with model name, available sizes and price ranges. All facts and figures are imbedded in the body text which makes the book impossible to use as a source of reference. Almost all pictures are overviews of one boat at the time. There are very few pictures highlighting unique or clever designs, and/or comparative pictures comparing various models and/or year classes.

4 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the Myth.......2005-12-26

Custer's autobiography, covering a very limited period of his life, is a remarkable document, first, as an important piece of historical information regarding the events covered, and second as an intriguing look at one of the most mythologized figures in US history. Being Native American on my mother's side, I was prepared to thoroughly dislike the man, but I was pleasantly surprised by the individual I met in the pages of this book.

Custer is an excellent writer and storyteller, and his famous prankish sense of humor shows up on several occassions. The man had the ability to laugh at himself and was willing to tell tales on himself, which goes a long way to endear him to the reader. It's a powerful contradiction of the Myth of Custer, conventionally portrayed as a stupid, arrogant, racist, and humorless figure. It's hard to continue viewing him as the symbol of American Evil when he goes to battle against the Indians dressed in his bathrobe. (They attacked at night, darn them. He didn't have time to put on his uniform.)

The comic relief is absolutely essential -- Custer's eyewitness account of the atrocities committed by Pawnee Killer will turn the stomach. Unlike every other author covering the Indian Wars, Custer presents the information in a straight forward matter and neither glosses over it nor demonizes the Indians. And, to the man's credit, he understood very clearly that the mutilated bodies he had to identify and bury were the work of a particular individual who happened to be an Indian, and did not let it prejudice him against the entire Native American race. The same cannot be said for most of his contemporaries. Custer clearly understood that Indians, like anybody else, were people who had to be judged according their individual actions, and not stereotyped and condemned in whole. In short, whatever his shortcomings might be, he does not deserve to be the poster boy for American Racism Against Indians.

Custer, the man, is far more complex. He detailed his part in the first assault on Black Kettle's village; being the tracker assigned to trail Pawnee Killer, he knew that Pawnee Killer's trail did not go to Black Kettle's village and that Black Kettle and his people were peaceful Indians. When given the order to attack anyhow, he and other officers protested. General Hancock, the commanding officer, threatened them with court martial -- in those days that an order was immoral was not grounds for an officer to refuse to carry it out; a principle that was not established in the US Army until the public outrage over the massacre at Mai Lai during the Vietnam War. Custer caved in and did as he was told. If he had not, his military career would have been over. Certainly Custer was culpable of moral cowardice, but that is entirely different from the myth of reckless disregard for the humanity of others that clings to his name.

In short, the real Custer is a fascinating, articulate, funny, tragic, complex, flawed, and ultimately human individual. His eyewitness account of the Indian Wars and his role in it are a riveting read. Anyone who has found the usual 19th century authors dreary beyond belief will find Custer's writing lively, wry, unflinching, and far more educational than his contemporaries.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A great book by a great mind.......2004-09-30

No one can read My Life on the Plains without coming away with a changed view of Custer as a military leader and an important historical figure. I often tell people that Custer was a great writer and direct people to read this book. I am occasionally met with laughter and suspicion--except by those who take my advice and read it. Amazingly well-written, and very descriptive.

5 out of 5 stars Indian fighting according to Custer.......2004-01-24

This book is a partial memoir of General George Armstrong Custer, of Little Bighorn fame. This work does not cover Custer's campaigns against the Cheyennes and Sioux, however, nor does it detail his flamboyant career in the Civil War. Instead, this book is literally an account of Custer's life on the plains, and covers his experiences with the Kiowa, Comanche, Arapaho, and Cheyenne Indians of the plains of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Despite the fact that this record is so incomplete a picture of Custer's life, however, this book is very valuable in that it covers the very controversial winter campaign of 1868-1869, which climaxed in Custer's attack of Black Kettle's village on the Washita River.

Custer had a remarkable gift for storytelling, and his prose, though flowery and often somewhat extravagant (as I envision the man himself), is crisp and engaging. In addition, this book provides a valuable look at the life of an army soldier campaigning against the Indians after the Civil War. The book may be very biased, and it may in fact contain many points of exaggeration, but it nevertheless is a valuable resource for any study of the Indian Wars.

5 out of 5 stars Indian fighting according to Custer.......2004-01-23

The question of whether Black Kettle and his band were hostile at the time they were attacked, as well as the question of whether innocent women and children had been wantonly slaughtered in the attack, is one of the driving forces behind this book. In it, Custer attempts to describe life as he lived it on the Plains, and attempts to paint a picture of the army that would persuade people back East that his Seventh Cavalry had acted in good faith, both in the battle and in the rest of the campaign that year.

4 out of 5 stars My life with this book.......2002-03-29

Wow, all I can is wow. This is a very interesting read. What a great way to see how life was out on the plains and during the war. Also, it's very trippy to read all about what Custer thought of "Indians" and the views that he held for them.

What really got me was the reality of this book. Getting an intimate look at the life of not only Custer's, but the soldiers and scouts that he commanded and worked with.

Very good and easy read. Custer does like to go off and get very wordy and talkative about subject matter that must have been important back in the 1870's. Still, it does not detract from the book, but only makes it that much more interesting.

                                      Pick this one up.

                                                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best Reference - From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control.......2006-07-08

The book cover almost every single instrument used in the process industry for Process measurement and Analysis of the most common process variables. The book covers Flow, Level, Temperature, Pressure, Density, Safety and Miscellaneous Sensors (Vibration, Shock, acceleration, torque, noise, etc.)

One of the aspect that I find more appealing is that at the beginning of each chapter you find an application and selection oriented overview and an orientation table for the process variable covered in that chapter of the book. The tables list all the different types of sensors and summarize the features and capabilities, as well as approximated prices, accuracies and characteristics of each one. If you need a sensor for a particular application, you can narrow your options and then go to the sections of the book that covers in details the selected sensors.

If you work with Industrial Instrumentation you will find this book to be a very valuable tool in your day to day job, either if you specify, install, maintain or operate them.

This handbook has almost 2000 pages of really useful information.

I have been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. I consider this book to be the very best in the field, and it is really an Excellent reference for anyone and everyone working in these areas or in areas related with their Industrial applications.

5 out of 5 stars Instrument Engineers Handbook Vol1.......2000-11-20

Excellent book. I second Mr. Hills comments, although I have recently purchased the books based upon comments Mr.Liptak has made in the control mailing list. It is a very good investment. The book is easy to read/understand, covers the full spectrum of instrumentation, give relative costs and companies manufacturing the items. It is a good first book to turn to, and will save me much research time. I wish I would have known about it earlier.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the advanced field technician........2000-07-07

I have used this book for years and it has never failed to provide the information necessary to troubleshoot and repair problems with measurement systems. Liptak does a wonderful job presenting measurement theory and the principles of operation of various measurement strategies. The most helpful information Liptak includes is the discussion of the limitation of various measurement devices. If you are responsible for the maintenance of a wide variety of instruments and you desire to know how those instruments work, this book is worth every penny.
