Book Description

The Last Renaissance Man is a compelling biography that is also a fascinating chronicle of the twentieth century. This account of the rise to success of Charles Harold Mullen, a man of integrity driven by his passions and enthusiasms, gives us a rare glimpse into the worlds of business, politics and celebrity.

Mullen began his life on the bustling streets of Brooklyn, New York. Coming of age during the Great Depression, we follow an industrious, high-spirited youth as he pursues his dreams and makes his mark upon the world.

A resourceful and gregarious young man, Mullen first worked in radio and gave a voice to Archie, that quintessential teenager of comic book fame. But, while he enjoyed a modicum of success in show business, his mother's wishes prevailed, and at the age of twenty-two he began his career in business.

Mullen was inspired by the American Tobacco Company's belief that any salesman could work his way up to the highest echelons of the company. His success was achieved by his unwavering diligence. As Chief Executive Officer of American Tobacco, he became an influential leader in the sphere of international commerce.

His rich personal life, as well as his acquaintanceship with celebrities, baseball players and presidents, is chronicled here. The Last Renaissance Man is the story of one man's life that might have been taken out of the pages of a Horatio Alger story.

3 out of 5 stars An American Success Story; An American Tragedy.......2006-02-08

Someone handed me a copy of this at the NYAC a few years back, and wherever I go, this flattering biography of Charlie Mullen, sometime head of the American Tobacco Company, keeps following me around. And I keep pulling it off the bookshelf (or out the box, as the case may be) and perusing it, again mesmerized by the photos ("Punky" Claudia; CEO Charlie, cigarette and ashtray at the ready, receiving his Arkansas Traveler certificate from Governor Winthrop Rockefeller; Charlie, in his young and old selves, on the cover of "Newsleaf," house organ of the American Tobacco Company; Charlie playing a Jewish tinseltown mogul in a Connecticut amateur-dramatics show about Marilyn Monroe; etc. etc.). Of its kind, the book is perfect. I do however quibble with Mr. Mills's facile finessing of the story's deeper mysteries. In particular, I'd like a clear explanation of why young veteran radio-star Charlie, poised at the cusp of television, gave up his career to become...a salesman for the American Tobacco Company. Mills tries to tell us that it was Charlie's mother who persuaded him, on the grounds that a cigarette salesman had a more secure future. Excuse me while I cough--I mean, laugh! Mightn't there be other considerations afoot? Such as Charlie's lack of confidence in his hearty, slightly porcine appearance? He would have been a smash-hit on TV, I have no doubt. But SOMEBODY persuaded him that only suave dark men with classical features had a chance on the tube. What a tragedy! What a loss! And behind the ruddy cheeks of Charlie's convivial visage, I do believe I detect a clear understanding that he took the wrong road.

4 out of 5 stars Billy Sunday: we scarcely knew you.......2006-01-02

What do we know of Billy Sunday? That, in the words of the song, he could not "shut down" Chicago, That as William Ashley Sunday he endured a difficult youth and displayed a temper always hard to manage. He also played pretty fair baseball for the Chicago Whitesockings and other major league teams. One season he batted .359. And he could run like a deer. Before his conversion, he cussed, drank and was a battler, taking no guff from anyone.

Young Sunday came to his Lord in Chicago and never looked back. He understudied evangelist J. Wilbur Chapman from 1893 to 1895. He then became his own man, first as a lay preacher and after 1903 as an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church. He evolved his own style as a preacher, acting out skits on stage during his revivals, using simple slang-filled language, sliding across the stage as if stealing a base. By general consensus he had, before his death on November 6, 1935, persuaded more than a million men and women to commit themselves in writing to God.

Billy Sunday's theology was short, simple and appealing: "With Christ you are saved; without Him you are lost." A leading ethical opinion of his was that "whiskey and beer are all right in their place, but their place is in hell." But Sunday also believed that God meant Christians to be happy, even merry. He innovated in the craft of evangelical and revival preaching, with emphasis on careful planning, attention to finance, and erection of inexpensive but safe temporary wooden buildings with sawdust strewn on the floors to hold down the noise. This led to the phrase "hitting the sawdust trail," used of persons who came forward during a revival, walking down a sawdust covered aisle to declare themselves for Christ.

SAWDUST TRAIL PREACHER: BILLY SUNDAY is a little gem, only 93 pages long. It covers Billy Sunday's life in more than adequate detail for an introductory biography. It is a model for what its author means to do. And Billy Sunday left his mark on America and many, many individuals and families.

Book Description

The definitive survey of the most popular and influential science fiction films of our time Roz Kaveney, an expert in science fiction literature and film, has written an entertaining and enlightening new read on the genre. She explores the history of science fiction film and literature, the mythologies and recurring themes and characters across the genre, the development of special effects technology and the advent of CGI's effects on modern films, the business and culture of movie franchises, and the legitimization of 'geek culture' through the blockbuster successes of Sci-Fi movies. Films discussed include Dark City, Strange Days, the Star Wars series, the Terminator films, the Alien quartet, and Galaxy Quest.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to recent SF film.......2006-02-02

Those films chosen by Kaveney inform the reader about which SF tropes she finds the most distinctive. They are tropes of gender, the postmodern and the post-human. And Kaveney carefully and with much delight tries to delineate the histories of these tropes as well.

Simply a wonderful work.

1 out of 5 stars Not that great a resource.......2007-03-28

I am a firm believer that cookbooks should remain in the kitchen. This book did not really provide me with any new recipes of use. The one recipe I did want to use for a client operation, I resourced the online materials and followed it through but was unable to have it turn out. If the experiment was a cake, it would have been in the compost bin.

Most of the book is taken up with two page layouts that show you how different effects work. Well I have been pretty familiar with the graphic pen filter for a long time, so most of the book which touched on those was wasted pulp.

There was nothing here that really wowed me about either the work, the layout or the subject matter. Maybe a first entry user of Photoshop might find it interesting , but I can't really recommend this title to a serious Photoshop user. I couldn't even give this book away at my user group meeting.

2 out of 5 stars If you know photoshop...you know most of this stuff in the book.......2007-03-04

Just a pretty rehash of photoshop filters and effects.
Skip it if you know photoshop
If you don't and like big picture learning this will teach you effects...but it won't teach you photoshop.

5 out of 5 stars Next Level of Photoshop Artistic Quality.......2007-01-10

I have been Fooling around with Photoshop-CS2 for years, i have been able to produce Amazing Effects. Many of my greatest Photoshops were done by Accident, because i wasn't sure were to start or in what direction to go in. I got this book and right away i saw some i have done but wasn't sure how i did it. Plus they have Tons of other effects you can do, by the time your done you will have Museam Quality Photos. Most people will ask you to do Photos for them to hang up in there house as a Center Piece.

5 out of 5 stars I use this book all the time..........2006-11-12

This is a great book that gives you well laid out instructions with invaluable visual aids throughout the book. I am constantly referencing this book for tips and techniques, and I have also combined many of the different areas I have learned into new effects. I would certainly recommend this book if you are looking for usefull tutorials that you can use in our work on a regular basis.. The best part is, this book is helpful for everyone from the beginner, to novice, to advanced users.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Newbies.......2006-09-10

Like everyone else who rated this book, I would've given it five stars for all the stated reasons if I had been using Photoshop for a year or so.

Unfortunately, the author is an expert and assumes everybody who reads the detailed instructions in the book knows exactly what he is talking about. Apparently, he only had experienced Photoshoppers review or try to follow his instructions prior to publication. Thus, it can be a very frustrating experience for a newbie to try to duplicate projects presented in the book. (If the book was designed to be a cookbook, then it should contain detailed fool-proof instructions and avoid statements and/or instructions that only experienced Photoshoppers understand.)

It is a shame because, with just a little bit of extra work, this would've been an absolute must-buy for anyone whether they were experienced Photoshoppers or had just bought their first copy of CS2.

I'm sure the author is thinking "I can't make the instructions any more clearer than what is in the book." If the author is preparing another book, I suggest that he submit his instructions to a few newbies to determine if they can duplicate every project without tearing their hair out.

        I'll bet they can't.

This is a superb presentation of civilizational analysis and world system theory for a study of the history of the last 5,000 years. Civilizations are conceived as large scale social groups with shared common cultural characteristics, such as religious, philosophical, linguistic and technological. Civilizations generally have a life cycle of genesis, growth, breakdown, and disentegration. World system analysis examines societies in the broadest possible terms. Here you are able

to compare and contrast the process of analysis of these two approaches to long term social and historical evolution on a global basis.

Many books about the Freemasons are hysterical polemics based on ludicrous conspiracy theories. British historian Jasper Ridley offers a welcome antidote to these half-witted tomes with The Freemasons, a sober-minded account of a secret society that has survived for centuries. Most important, Ridley provides the one thing missing from many discussions of the masons: facts. For instance, after noting the "well-established legend in the United States that the Freemasons made the American Revolution," Ridley shows that "of the 55 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, only nine were certainly masons." (Prominent members of the founding generation who were not masons include Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Alexander Hamilton.) This shows that masons have played a meaningful role in history, though not the domineering one their critics have alleged. Even though Ridley (who is not a mason) defends the masons against the overblown charges made against them, he doesn't quite buy the explanation that "they are no different from a golf club. ...Members of golf clubs do not take oaths not to reveal the secrets of the club." For a level- headed account of how a medieval guild of stone masons developed over time into an offbeat social organization with a powerful membership, Ridley's book is tough to beat. --John Miller

            Book Description

For many centuries, since their founding as a guild comprising the master builders of the great castles and cathedrals of the Middle Ages, the freemasons have enjoyed a dual reputation: powerfulóoften munificentórulers, politicians, and artists whose works have enhanced our world; and members of a dread secret society bent on evil. Here, the eminent historian Jasper Ridley offers a thoughtful, rounded assessment of freemasonry throughout the ages, from its origins up to the present day. Not a mason himself, Ridley nonetheless refutes many of the outrageous allegations made against the order and puts into proper perspective its many contributions to civilization over the centuries.

3 out of 5 stars Gave this book as a gift.......2007-03-08

I can't personally review the book since I gave it as a gift. I did ask them about the book and they did say that alot of the books have some of the same information but it was good to read another book about the Freemasons. Sorry I can't give more details but again, it was bought as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Good review on historical background but doesn't give away any craft secrets........2007-01-04

As a 32nd Degree Mason, this helped fill in the gaps that I did not already know and gave some further background on what I did need some answers for.

This book does not give any of the "craft secrets" that some books have in the past. Provides great insight to the beginnings of Freemasonary in Europe and the USA to include the Revolutionary period with George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.

Book is a great addition to a Mason's library.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, not that objective.......2006-08-04

I wouldn't say this book is objective as I find a slight pro-mason attitude on it.

The reason I say this is because the author quickly dismisses any possible fact that apparently is not properly documented that would present the freemasons as wrongdoers, calling the ideas ridiculous, while in other instances he takes a simple popular song as a historical proof because it serves him.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and design tool.......2001-09-03

I purchased this book a couple of months ago thinking of it as an aditional reference book. It contains the practical approach that we use in the day to day construction process for oil and gas pipelines at Boscan Field in Venezuela. It's amazing how the authors reflects sharply and easily every step of the pipeline design and construction. The section dedicated to transient analysis is fully documented with a real word example and the parallel piping is covered within the teory discussed.

                Excellent Book.
