The 500 Home Run Club: From Aaron to Williams
ASIN: 158261220X |
Book Description
It is an exclusive club. So exclusive that it has only 23 members. Not everyone can join. Membership is reserved for only those select few who were able to collect 3,000 hits during their Major League Baseball careers. Babe Ruth did not make it. Neither did Lou Gehrig. Rogers Hornsby won seven batting titles, but is not a member. Neither is Joe DiMaggio. The men who are included were unique in their personalities, yet they all shared two common threads that link them together: durability and consistency. The 3,000 Hit Club takes a close look at the men who comprise this special club. From the angry Ty Cobb to the hard-drinking Paul Waner to the avowed racist Cap Anson to new members Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs, each chapter explores the lives of these gifted men and the challenges, controversies, and conflicts they had to overcome to achieve their goal.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Baseball Book.......2001-01-25
This is really a very exclusive club. Less than twenty-five players amassed this many hits. Lots of very fine hitters never quite made it to 3,000. It takes a long and fruitful career to make it. There are a lot of good stories about each one in this book.
A ten star rating!.......2000-08-01
Greats like Sam Crawford, Sam Rice, Rogers Hornsby, Al Simmons, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt, Ernie Banks and Carlton Fisk and so many other have failed to do what 24 players have done - get 3,000 hits.
From Rose to Clemente this exclusive fraternity of two dozen of baseball best is covered n this one of a kind collectors book. This must have for every baseball fan of all ages breaks down each of the 24 and gives you a short glimpse into what has made them great.
In 213 pages you'll read about men like Aaron, Brett, Boggs, Gwynn, Ripken, Cobb, Rose, Musial, Waner, Winfield, Carew, Anson, Mays, Murray, Brock, Clemente and eight others. Simply one of the best books on baseball I have ever read.
Under $15.00 is well worth the price; I would have paid double for this book. Congratulations to the 24 best hitters in baseball and also to Sports Publishing Inc. for allowing me to read this book.

Stop Staring: Facial Modeling and Animation Done Right
ASIN: 0735708665 |
Amazon.com
In Maya Character Animation, the technical details of creating believable and engaging characters, from modeling and texturing to adding bone structure and keyframes, are thoroughly explored.
Although Maya can be used for many kinds of 3-D animation, the tutorials in Maya Character Animation are designed for character work that will make your creations walk the walk and talk the talk. The book covers character animation rather than mechanical or effects animation, and the chapters that focus on modeling (chapters 4 through 6) use Maya's NURBS modeling tools. Texture mapping in chapter 7 is also described from the point of view of texturing organic shapes.
Part III covers setting up the character for animation, including skeletal hierarchies, creating keyframes for movement, and facial animation. The character used for these examples is a simply designed cartoon man--but the principles used can be applied to almost any character--and the example face used for facial animation is complex enough to describe the nuances of animating expressions.
While the entire book is lavishly illustrated and written with great attention to detail, the most valuable chapters are the first three, a full third of the book, and they have nothing to do specifically with Maya. Covering such fundamental issues as choosing the right story for the medium, designing characters for 3-D, aspects of storyboarding, and other preproduction issues, this section is invaluable to any budding animator looking to make a film that's more than just eye candy.
The use of Alias Wavefront's Maya for character animation, whether the character is a photorealistic digital stuntman or a three-legged Martian, is growing exponentially. Maya Character Animation clearly explains how to bring your virtual self to life in vivid computer-generated detail. --Mike Caputo

Strange : I like it..........2002-03-30
First I got to say this book has lot of bugs, and I wouldnt model any character the way they learn... On the other side there are some good Chapters that I like, FE: "Creating Story concepts" , "Designing Character" and " Designing story boards.. This is one of most important thing in creating animation and lot of people ignore this part. When you are going to spend hours on modeling and animating its good idea to design good characters and interesting story board first... For me this chapter is great... I like chapters about character and face animation too, there are some bugs but I think they got lot of usefull info and for me is quite easy to folow them...
Ok so what is the ressult? I like about 40% of this book a lot, the other part is quite confusing and not very professional in my eyes....
I would recomend " Mastering Maya complete" series and "Art of Maya" from AW. First one is great for learning, the second one is beautifull overview of maya functions with lot of nice pictures and examples how to use them ....
Great resource, a few flaws.......2001-12-20
Okay, this book does have a lot to go for it. The first few chapters are completely dedicated to helping animators create a solid story for their demo reels. Invaluable information right there!
Then the author moves on to modeling. This book teaches ONLY nurbs techniques, so if you're not interested in learning nurbs or already know how, I really recommend that you purchase Maya Illuminated: Games!, it will teach you how to use polygons instead. The good thing about this book teaching you only nurbs is that it really goes in depth instead of skimming through valuable techniques.
This book will of course teach you how to apply textures to your nurbs models, so that's a nice plus.
Then it will teach you everything you need to know about rigging your models for animation. This is probably one of the best parts of the book, simply because there are VERY few tutorials out there for Maya on how to rig anything...
The flaws to this book.
It tries to teach lighting... if you want to learn how to properly light your scenes, buy the now very popular Digital Lighting and Rendering. It will teach you the PROPER way to light your scenes. You can tell from this Maya 2 character animation book that lighting wasn't the author's specialty. Either that or he didn't feel like making it worth much. The scenes the author shows as lighting examples are very badly lit.
Another thing is that it's hard to read this book. I don't spend hours on end reading this cause there's a lot of theory and explaining.
Otherwise, great book. I would recommend this book if you need to learn how to really learn how to model with nurbs, how to rig your models and how to create solid stories for animation.
Not bad, but also not very good.......2001-02-09
Bill Fleming always says that modeling with polygons is better than nurbs. Why is this I didn't know, until I read this book. The fact is you learn a lot of good modeling, but the hard way. Sure the book has great info, but impractical if you want to get in the business of 3d. You can't waste your time modeling like it teaches you while you know you can do a good job in a lot less time with another technique. Be practical.
Masters of Disaster.......2001-01-26
Fine --- the writers are "experts" of Character Animation, but before you release a book, I think that you should have placed a little more emphasis on the make up of the book and the quality of the information provided. After spending hours upon hours going through some of the exercises, it dawned on me that their procedures were way undereffective (is this even a word!) and outdated. Be warned -- this is a complete waste of valuable money. There are many other resources for building realistic characters out there.
I do however praise the authors for coming out with a book dedicated to modeling characters. A great step forward, but with careless steps.
This is NOT a waste of paper!.......2001-01-10
Great step-by-step guide. One of the better books on Maya.

Product Description
Faces of Culture is designed according to the philosophy that culture as the expression of human values, behavior, and social organization exist in unique and varied forms throughout the world, in past and present times. The text attempts to document that diversity and demonstrate the inherent logic of each culture in light of the problems people need to solve and the environments to which they must adapt. Although some of the behaviors and customs you will see may, at times, strike you as odd or unpleasant, we urge you to try not to make value judgments about the cultures under study but to look instead for the purpose and function of the behaviors or customs within the context of those cultures and their values.

Learning the UNIX Operating System, Fifth Edition
ASIN: 1565924266 |
Book Description
For many users, working in the Unix environment means using vi, a full-screen text editor available on most Unix systems. Even those who know vi often make use of only a small number of its features. Learning the vi Editor is a complete guide to text editing with vi. Topics new to the sixth edition include multiscreen editing and coverage of four viclones: vim, elvis, nvi, and vile and their enhancements to vi, such as multi-window editing, GUI interfaces, extended regular expressions, and enhancements for programmers. A new appendix describes vi's place in the Unix and Internet cultures. Quickly learn the basics of editing, cursor movement, and global search and replacement. Then take advantage of the more subtle power of vi. Extend your editing skills by learning to use ex, a powerful line editor, from within vi. For easy reference, the sixth edition also includes a command summary at the end of each appropriate chapter. Topics covered include:
- Basic editing
- Moving around in a hurry
- Beyond the basics
- Greater power with ex
- Global search and replacement
- Customizing vi and ex
- Command shortcuts
- Introduction to the vi clones' extensions
- The nvi, elvis, vim, and vile editors
- Quick reference to vi and ex commands
- vi and the Internet
Customer Reviews:
Still reads like a first edition.......2007-08-23
Although this is the 6th edition of this book, while I was reading it, I still felt like I was reading the first edition, due to the clunky prose and the treatment of the material.
I know the authors feel compelled to write a book that describes the features of vi that are common on all platforms, but they end up producing a manual that appeals to the lowest common denominator. If you are still editing files on an old Unix machine using minicom and a dial-up link, this book is just right for you. If you are a modern vi user, trying to edit a large Linux project and need to learn some of the more powerful features of vim, you may be better off asking the office vi guru.
The community at large would be better served by a book dedicated to vim that does not have the problems of "Vi iMproved (VIM)" by Steve Oualline.
A must buy if you want to master vi.......2007-08-19
I have been using vi/vim for about six years, but had never gotten to the next level. This was mainly because I had kept my usage limited to a small subset of vi (which is even smaller for vim). And it's not just me - I have seen many people who use vi this way. The other reason is the fact that vi has a steep learning curve. And even when you learn something new, you have to use it often, as otherwise there is a good chance that you will forget it. I knew how powerful vi can be as a text editor, but somehow never used it to its full potential. Sometimes I used to search on the internet for vi/vim tips and stuff, and finally realized that all this learning will be much more effective if I have a book that has all the information in one place. I guess most people will think twice before buying a book on a text editor (at least, I did), whereas they won't hesitate if it was a book on a programming language. But an editor like vi, which is quite difficult to master, does need a book. Once you learn it, you will be amazed to see how powerful it is.
About the book, it is perhaps the best resource for someone at the beginner/intermediate level to learn about vi. There are not many books around on the subject, but this book does a great job. It is divided into two parts. The first part teaches vi and the second part talks about a few vi clones (including vim). The book (especially the first part) is organized in a very nice way. Things are presented in a certain order. Each chapter/section builds on the previous chapter/section. The second part deals with different clones of vi, like nvi, elvis, vim and vile. Of these, I use only vim, which is basically is superset of vi. The chapter on vim does a good job of discussing the essential features of vim in some details, although its not complete by any means. With vim having such a huge number of features, it demands a separate book for itself.
All in all, this is a great book. It is a worthwhile investment to make. You will end up doing things in minimum time and with just a few keystrokes. As another reviewer has said, vi is addicting. Use it and you will see for yourself!
A great book about a great text editor.......2007-06-22
This book is a fine exposition of the vi editor with a perfect balance between density of information and friendliness of explanation.
The material is divided in two parts:
* Presentation of the vi proper.
* Presentation of the vi clones.
The value of the book resides in the first part (7 chapters). It explains vi so well that it is hard not to understand and like this well-designed editor.
************************************************************
Vi is an editor of many qualities: portability, price ($0!) and speed. When it comes to speed, file loading is quick, saving is quick, searching is quick, scrolling is quick - everything is quick with this guy!
Everything but... learning. The vi editor has had a bad reputation as being hard to learn and master. The modal behavior scares most people away and the wide range of commands may seem like hard to conquer. This could have been the situation *before* the amazing "Learning the vi Editor" by Lamb & Robbins existed - but now, when the book reaches the 6th edition, there's no excuse.
As "Learning the vi Editor" nicely explains, vi is a layer on top of the ex editor. Ex is a so-called "line-editor", used to edit files in a line-oriented manner. The two modes of vi are nothing else than an expression of this duality. In the so-called 'edit mode', ex is in control. In the so-called 'command mode', vi-proper is in control while redirecting the ':' commands to the underlying ex. Simple, isn't it?
The book exposes this philosophy behind vi with clarity, rigor and friendliness. Once you read this book you realize that, in fact, vi is a simple and perfectly logical editor. It has simple command sintax, simple command semantics and simple command composition rules.
************************************************************
All this information - and much more - can be found in the first part of "Learning the vi Editor". The second part is dedicated to various vi clones. Here the reader has the liberty to choose depending on which clone he/she feels most comfortable with.
Books which remove confusion and bring light to seemingly arcane areas are rare. "Learning the vi Editor" by Lamb & Robbins is one of them.
The best book for properly learning the vi editor.......2007-02-17
If your operating system is down, you don't have access to the "fancier" editors available that actually have interfaces that make sense to normal people. At this moment, particularly if you are in a system administrator position, you must know vi in order to access and modify files. It is so easy to pick up vi the wrong way - usually by word of mouth from someone who has learned vi the wrong way too. This book is the best I've found that is dedicated to properly teaching you the features of the vi editor and how to use them. O'Reilly has experimented with several book formats over the last ten years. This book is what I like to call "classic O'Reilly". It is the same format that most of their other books on Unix tools are generally written in, and if you have their books on sed and awk or Unix Power Tools, you know what I'm talking about.
If you have learned the wrong way, or if you are a bonified beginner, start at the beginning of part one. Don't skip anything. Even if you think you already know something, at least read through the section to make sure you know the best way of doing it. By the end of the first seven chapters you should be a pretty skilled user of vi. The book makes frequent use of practice exercises, answers common questions, and gives advice on what to do when you encounter common problems. By the time you finish you'll even be writing ex scripts and modifying C/C++ code in the vi editor without accidentally inserting all kinds of control characters that will drive programmers crazy once "the real editor" is back on line.
Part two starts at chapter eight and concerns itself with all of the various extensions to vi that are available via the four most popular vi clones available when this book was published. You do get some enhancements such as multi-window editing and even GUI interfaces by using them, but the cost is an increase in the confusion factor that this book tries to clear up as much as possible. If you are not planning on using a vi clone, you may want to just file this section of the book away in case the subject ever comes up.
Part 3 consists of several useful appendices. Four of the appendices are still useful, but the fifth, on vi and the Internet, is a bit dated. I highly recommend this book if the vi editor is in your future, and if you have system administrator duties, believe me it is. You might also want to invest in the very handy "vi Editor Pocket Reference" by the same author. I have mixed feelings about that one. Everything is there in a concise format, but until you get used to it, information can be hard to find.
Beginner to Advanced, Comprehensive Guide to Reference.......2005-09-29
This book is well written and laid out. Whether or not you are a beginner or advanced user coming to vi, this is a valuable tool for getting the most out of vi.
vi is by no means an easy or intuitive editor, but with a little practice, it can greatly improve your efficiency. The book does a great job of taking you through a logical progression of how to start using the product.
Also, the support for the derivatives of vi is a huge plus. The vim chapter is excellent and I learned several tips and trick that I now use on a daily basis.
As usual, O'Reilly hits another one out of the park.

Completely revised and expanded with 200 new entries, The Great American History Fact-Finder covers a wide spectrum of American history and culture, including political events, military history, sports, arts, entertainment, landmark legislation, and business. Here is essential information on everything from the Mayflower to space exploration, from the dot-com boom and bust to the Stanley Cup. The book's 2,200 concise entries, arranged from A to Z, bring our nation's past into sharp focus while also offering just plain useful facts about the well known and not so well known: - Who ran on the campaign slogan "Don't swap horses in midstream"? - In what year was the Super Bowl first played? - Where did the westbound and eastbound tracks of the transcontinental railroad meet? - When did events at Yalta, the Bay of Pigs, and Kent State take place? - What did the swimmer Gertrude Ederle achieve in 1926?
Customer Reviews:
OK, But...........2007-05-12
This is very useful for History majors, maybe even high-school students. My main gripe with this book is that there are too many entries of celebrities/athletes. For example, Barbara Streisand is in there, but some things I wanted to look up for history were left out. Also, if you want it for the sports information, beware because it's lacking in that department, too. My brother went to look for Mark McGuire and he was not in there.
Great for all ages.......2004-11-16
I should have bought three of these books, one is simply not enough under my roof. My husband won't put it down, my 9 year old daughter uses it for reference in her class studies and I find myself skimming through it when I get a chance to relax. This is an excellent, comprehensive book covering all major historical events and people. Very recent entries including a summary of the US Patriot Act and other recent world events. As a mom I would say this book is appropriate for ages 8 and up (material and reading wise)
A Coffee Table Must.......2004-11-10
This book should be on everyone's coffee table. I would call it a "Readers Digest" condensed American History masterpiece. We use it constantly to look up historical facts that are a part of every day conversations without having to resort to a computer or a 20 volume history encycolpedia. The handy size should make it a part of every students library.
Excellent reference.......2004-11-09
Are you interested in American people, events, and/or politics? Are you a student, parent or teacher? Do you have any standardized tests coming up which will include questions about American History? Are you an American citizen? If so, this book is an absolute must! It is easy to reference and has up-to-date information about relevant historical people and events. Written by two teachers with a dynamic background in American History, this book is a first-rate, accessible look at just about anything you'd like to know about the United States of America. Highest recommendation.

Book Description
This powerful narrative traces the social, cultural, and political history of the Cherokee Nation during the forty-year period after its members were forcibly removed from the southern Appalachians and resettled in what is now Oklahoma. In this master work, completed just before his death, William McLoughlin not only explains how the Cherokees rebuilt their lives and society, but also recounts their fight to govern themselves as a separate nation within the borders of the United States.
Long regarded by whites as one of the 'civilized' tribes, the Cherokees had their own constitution (modeled after that of the United States), elected officials, and legal system. Once re-settled, they attempted to reestablish these institutions and continued their long struggle for self-government under their own lawsan idea that met with bitter opposition from frontier politicians, settlers, ranchers, and business leaders. After an extremely divisive fight within their own nation during the Civil War, Cherokees faced internal political conflicts as well as the destructive impact of an influx of new settlers and the expansion of the railroad. McLoughlin brings the story up to 1880, when the nation's fight for the right to govern itself ended in defeat at the hands of Congress.

One of a kind!.......2003-09-12
This book, as far as I know, is the only one that explores the fascinating history of the Cherokees after they reached Oklohoma. We all know of the 'trail of tears' where the cherokees were removed from Georgia and forced to march to Oklohoma. This book tells the great story of their attempts ot civilize the land. How they built homes how they bought slaves and how they fought with neighbooring indians(who looked like savages to the new americanized Cherokee). The Cherokees fought in the civil war and even fought civil wars among themselves. This book details the hatred of the pure blood cherokees for their brethen who seemed more white and scottish then the others. The cherokee nation then was oborbed into the state of oklohoma when the Indian territory was aboloshed. This is an extraordinary tail of a hitherto unknown american story about one of americas most talked about, but seldom understood and studied, indian tribes, the noble civilized cultured Cherokee(who so many people claim to be descended from that a modern Indian joke goes "what do you get when you have 40 Cherokees in one room? One full blooded Indian").
Definitive history.......1998-10-09
The continuing story of the Cherokees after their arrival in present day Oklahoma. A story of the conflicts both within and outside of the Cherokee Nation. The story of how the Cherokees battled to maintain their sovereignty and ultimately failed. Meticulously researched by McLoughlin through primary sources, an excellent history for anyone interested in Native American or Cherokee history. An typical example of what happened to all tribes in America.

A Good Starting Point.......2005-08-24
This book is a good introductory text for those who want to know more about the complex topic of climate change and "global warming". The book is easy to read and educational for those starting out in their examination of the field, though further reading on this topic will show that some of the core premises of the book are more contentious than the author seems to think.
A list of further readings is provided, though there are no sources listed for the arguments made by the aurthor, which can make it difficult for those who want to do their own fact-checking or to canvass alternative opinions. However, a whole (short) chapter is devoted to arguments against the impact of man and is consequences on the environment.
Unfortunately, like many modern texts on climate and the environment, the author seems wedded to the concept of biocentrality and "steady-state" systems, with no examination of the merits or pitfalls of such a position.
Still, overall, this book provides a good introduction to the general concepts and arguments around man's impact on global climate.
Some decent basic information but clearly biased. .......2005-05-06
This book has some good basic information but the author
isn't really interested in having anyone read views that
don't buy everything the leftist NGOs or the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the United Nations)
say (he states panelists are all "climatologists" which isn't true). He also states 100 Nobel Prize winners see global warming as a big problem caused by the "wealthy few." But most of these "winners" are not climate scientists and the Nobel Committee is very leftist oriented. In fact, the wealthier nations have the improving environments while poorer, socialist and communist nations (such as Zimbabwe) are usually worsening. His references for further reading don't include even one
so-called "skeptic" about global warming but includes Paul Ehrlich whose predictions have often been wrong. In the text, he briefly discusses Bjorn Lomborg with the clear implication he ISN'T an "environmentalist" which I doubt is true. He then doesn't bother to list Lomborg in the Index nor does he list the book as one to read though it has been widely praised. In his list of "Concerned Organizations," he lists every leftwing NGO but not one from those who have questioned the standard orthodoxy such as Cato or the American Enterprise Institute.
So, if you are interested in reading both sides of this issue,
here some suggestions for starters:
BOOKS: "The Collapse of the Kyoto Protocol," David Victor, Stanford University, published by the Council on Foreign Relations. "The Satanic Gases" and "Meltdown"(2004), Dr. Patrick J. Michaels, Univ. of Virginia. "The Environmental Case for Nuclear Power," Robert C. Morris. "The Heated Debate," Dr. Robert C. Balling (also co-authored "Satanic Gases"). "Ecoscam" and "Global Warming and Other Eco-Myths," Ronald Bailey. "Why Geography Matters" by Harm de Blij, noted geographer. "The Life and Death of Planet Earth" by Ward and Brownlee, Univ. of Washington. "Frozen Earth" by Douglas McDougall, U.C.-San Diego. "Hoodwinking the Nation" by Julian Simon and Lomborg's book which is simply amazing ("The Skeptical Environmentalist").
WEBSITES: www.sepp.org; www.worldclimatereport.com; www.techcentralstation.com/environment; www.envirotruth.org; www.lomborg.com; www.cato.org; Michael Crichton's website. There are many more but these are a good start.

Sunny Forecast for this book.......2001-03-12
I've always been fascinated by weather and its changes. However, having spent my whole life on the West Coast (and almost all of it in California), I can't say I'm that much of a "weather expert." I remember living in San Diego in the late 1970s and having a weatherman describe a passing storm front as a series of "squall lines." I always wondered what exactly that meant. While this book may not define "squall lines" specifically, it does go a long way in explaining our weather. And after reading this book I still may not be a weather expert, but I'm definitely much more knowledgeable about it.
I like the Idiot books because they explain a subject in some depth without going overboard, but at the same time don't "dumb down" to the point of telling cutesy jokes to get a point across. This book is no exception. Taking on weather topics from wind and rain, how violent storms (thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes) develop, how air pollution affects us, "global warming," even how a day to day forecast is put together and how to become a TV weatherman are done in a light but still informative style. There's also some excellent reference material (weather glossary, weather maps, etc.) at the back of the book too.
An excellent introductory book about weather and one that I can refer to time and time again.
A great learning tool!.......1999-12-14
This book was very interesting. It is great for people of all ages. It answers any question you ever had about the weather, and you don't even have to be a scientist to understand it! It would make a great gift too!
Dr. Mel's encyclopedic knowledge makes weather enjoyable!.......1999-07-26
Dr. Mel's Complete Idiot's Guide is a most exciting book. I love the way it contains all the elements we could ask for in a book about the weather. I particularly like the part about relative humidtiy; he makes it easy to understand such an abstract concept.

Book Description
This inaugural volume of a projected annual provides a forum for the new academic research field of green politics.
Not a partisan publication, Green Politics is founded on the belief that the movement represents an important political innovation worthy of serious academic study. All points of view, including those critical of green politics, are included.
Green politics is here understood in the widest possible sense to encompass both party and nonparty political manifestations. The contributions in this volume provide information on countries seldom represented in the literature, such as Belgium, Italy, and Ireland, and are drawn from a number of different theoretical approaches, methodologies, and perceptions of green politics. The contributors include sociologists, political scientists, business analysts, and language specialists. Among the American contributors are Anthony D. Affigne of Brown University and Herbert Kitschelt from Duke. Each of the articles reports original social-scientific research.
