    Book Description

Tarred as a blackbirder, Donald Macleod participated in settlement and trading in the Pacific Islands from 1868 until his death in 1894. Although he did participate in the labour trade, he has been unfairly maligned in history books. British and French colonialists, anxious to achieve political ends, used Macleod as a whipping boy, as did the New Hebrides Mission. After extensive research, his great niece, Katherine Stirling Kerr Cawsey, found that Macleod enjoyed a good reputation among Islanders, settlers, traders and some colonial officials and missionaries; he was not the villain that many others had painted him. This book offers hitherto unknown data about trading conditions and Islander participation and revelatory discussion of the politics of the day, as well as an intimate portrait of a survivor in a rough and controversial era.

            Book Description

These dazzling, radical lectures were given one month before the opening of the first Waldorf School—following two years of intense preoccupation with the social situation in Germany as World War I ended and society sought to rebuild itself.

Well aware of the dangerous tendencies present in modern culture that undermine a true social life—such as psychic torpor and boredom, universal mechanization, and a growing cynicism—Steiner recognized that any solution must address not only economic and legal issues but also that of a free spiritual life.

Steiner also saw the need to properly nurture in children the virtues of imitation, reverence, and love at the appropriate stages of development in order to create mature adults who are inwardly prepared to fulfill the demands of a truly healthy society—adults who are able to assume the responsibilities of freedom, equality, and brotherhood.

Relating these themes to an understanding of the human as a threefold being of thought, feeling, and volition, and against the background of historical forces at work in human consciousness, Steiner lays the ground for a profound revolution in the ways we think about education.

Also included here are three lectures on the social basis of education, a lecture to public school teachers, and a lecture to the workers of the Waldorf Astoria Cigarette Company, after which they asked him to form a school for their children.

              Book Description

This book deals with women and socioeconomic change in twentieth century Sweden. The main focus is on how women's education and labor force participation have affected fertility over time. Although many perceive Sweden as a country where men and women have equal opportunities, traditional gender roles continue to constrain male and female activities and opportunities. The gender division of labor within the family, as well as within society as a whole, is central to the conceptual framework for the theoretically oriented analysis. During the twentieth century, women's advances in education overtook the lead position of men, female labor force participation increased, and the gender wage gap narrowed considerably.

Change was, however, concentrated to distinct periods, namely the 1920's, the post-war 1940's, and the 1960's and 70's. The 1990's also emerges as an important period of change. Women changed their behavior much more than men during these periods as opportunities for women to partake in production increased through economic structural change. Moreover, policy reforms facilitated the combination of productive and reproductive activities. This study of the long-term development of education, labor force participation and fertility contributes to our understanding of important facets of the twentieth century and why the road to gender equality has been so slow.

4 out of 5 stars A decent tale with a couple of surprises.......2005-08-25

My experience with game-based fiction is limited to a few of the earliest Dragonlance novels, which I read in high school. I assume that the genre has its high and low points, like any genre, and I can only imagine the difficulty of trying to write a story that is truly one's own while hampered by the necessity of remaining true to the particulars of someone else's universe.

The Brazen Gambit seems to be a successful attempt. This is my introduction to the world of Athas (except for a few gaming articles in Dragon magazine back in the days when the setting was officially suppoerted--I never used the setting myself). Abbey manages to introduce the unique aspects of Athas as the reader needs to know them, but without making the exposition too clumsy or obvious; this process is aided by having the protagonist (and, to a lesser extent, other characters) interact with a culture that is foreign to him. Abbey is also able to convey some idea of the recent history that seems to have occurred (perhaps dealt with in the two previous Dark Sun series, which I have not read). The plot is interesting but not especially original; the ending is a blatant (and, in fact, almost literal) instance of deus ex machina ("god from the machine," an element of Greek drama in which one of the gods would descend to the stage and arbitrarily set things right) which works precisely because one doesn't expect a writer to have the nerve to try it. The solution is simple (but not obvious on Athas, perhaps, with its intrigue and shifting alliances): to tattle on the wrongdoer. This, I assume, is the brazen gambit of the title.

It's not totally flawless, of course; the psychology seems forced at times. Even on Athas, some nonsuperficial motivation is needed for a character's turning toward or away from the "dark side;" this is not wrestling, where even the slightest provocation or miscommunication is grounds for transformation into a "bad guy." Additionally, there are some minor inconsistencies in the way the clairvoyant druids diagnose the protagonist's mental state (i.e. "broken") and the evidence we see within his own internal thought process. He doesn't think or react as one would expect of someone whose psyche is as fractured as the druids say it is.

I enjoyed it, and intend to read the rest of the Dark Sun Novels. The other four novels in the "Chrnicles of Athas" series appear to stand alone; this doesn't seem to be a continuous chronicle, at least according to the synopses. Those gamers interested in exploring Athas (which doesn't appear to have been supported in print for about a decade) might want to visit athas.org, which is a fan-based site that has Wizards of the Coast's approval as the official resting place of Dark Sun on the Internet, and contains new (official) material.

5 out of 5 stars A great read over and over again........2003-10-11

This book is without a doubt my favorite in all the Dark Sun books. Pavek is a memorable and very human character and deals very human-ly with everything he comes up against. The reader really feels for him and his companions throughout the entire book.

                          4 out of 5 stars Entralling experience.......2000-04-28

I love this book. The main character, Pavek, is a memorable fellow right down to his snarly lip. The problems he faces are both interesting and entertaining. The book has that street sense theme to it as it smoothly leads you from the surface of the city into the frightening secrets of the underground world. Another bonus to this book is it doesn't have those grey areas that seem to take longer to read because of lack of interest. I think ... why not take a journey to Lynn's city of Urik. You won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars The best of the Dark Sun books..........1998-04-07

The best of the Dark Sun books to be published, though not the best of Abbey's own work. Possibly because of TSR guidelines, but who really knows? The book is still enjoyable, and with the exception of Abbey's sequals (of which The Rise and Fall of a Dragon King is the best, surpassing even this) the only Dark Sun book that captures the world it was set in.

The book features Pavek as its hero, and while a jaded, depressed, lost templar, he is a likable hero--a stark change from the farm boys who will be king, blah, blah, blah... You understand. And he has his good sides and bad, which is another change for books shot out of the cannon by TSR.

I won't go into details of the plot, since most are simplistic enough as they are, but I read the whole thing in one sitting: which says that I didn't want to put it down and turn on the TV instead. The style is Abbey's own, the characters are working well, and the dialogue is crisp--all a plus, and all making it a good read.

                          And Hamanu is excellent.

He alone is worth the price of admission (which is why the Rise and Fall of a Dragon King is better).

So, verdict: a pleasent book, with a good style, and likable characters that are not farm boys who will be kings and other such useless trash. I read it and I liked it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent story of Athas.......1997-04-10

A chronicle of Athas. Well written gripping story. Lots of Adventure and a few twists. Any Reader of Dark Sun fiction will love it and others who read it will be hooked and looking for more adventures of Athas, desert home of the Dragon Kings

                              5 out of 5 stars Good coaching........2007-09-23

I passed OCA exam thanks to this book and with a little help of SelfTest software.
Very good writing. Authors definitely know the subject practically.
It is a good reading on Oracle RDBMS internals. And more entertaining than the Oracle Concepts Guide.
Again - their writing style is excellent, they do not over-complicate things and manage to explain complicated subjects simply and clearly.
I wish they wrote something on efficient oracle design :).

5 out of 5 stars Good OCP guide.......2007-05-12

This book is very good not just for clearing OCP but also reference for novice as well as experienced DBAs . The authors have covered the exam syllabus very concisely without leaving anything yet keeping the volume to a minimum .
However for the part 2 exam , one might have to read oracle manuals thoroughly especially for resource management and scheduler concepts .
The pratice test CD that comes with the book is very helpful.

It is an excellent opportunity to get ready for the exam. Even if you are not familiar with the RDBMS concepts, this book will help you to get ready for your OCP. A lot of examples and exercises in a book easy to read is complemented with a set of self-test exams in the CD ROM making this the complete tool to get your OCP.

                              Book Description

For some, patriotism means flags and parades, for others it's "My country right or wrong." But it's much more than that, and as Alan Axelrod observes in this revealing review of our history, true patriotism is built on a bedrock of understanding—who we are as individuals and as a nation, how our ideals and our democracy have evolved, and what it really means to be an American. It's a challenge that calls for an open mind and a clear perspective on the people, events, and issues that shaped our society—and that's just what 1001 Events That Made America provides.

This handy, informative chronology of key events in our history sweeps from 45,000 B.C., when the first intrepid Asians crossed the Bering land bridge to populate North America, to the 21st century, which finds us the richest and most powerful country in the world—a prodigious, panoramic journey marked out by more than 1,000 milestones and turning points, each explained in concise, lively detail. From Plymouth Rock to Pearl Harbor, from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement, from George Washington to George W. Bush, we learn what happened, who was involved, and why it's important.

Axelrod, author of the popular What Every American Should Know About American History, has a wonderful knack for capturing powerful ideas, towering figures, and definitive moments with a memorable turn of phrase, and by the time readers follow him step by step from our past to our present, they'll have come a long way towards a real and rewarding answer to the question: What is a patriot?

                              Customer Reviews:

                              3 out of 5 stars Enticing, interesting....then disappointing........2006-07-10

An informative and captivating journey through American history, ending with a heartbreaking collapse into partisan bias. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and still do. Its year-by-year paragraph format makes it a great little book when you have just a few minutes to read. You can open it up to any page; that is, except the final 30.

The presentation of recent history reads like a compilation of New York Times headlines. The author's personal opinions and passions mar the presentation of events that occurred during his own lifetime.

Axelrod falters with an otherwise delightful book. It is still worthwhile, but don't bother reading past 1982, unless you can tolerate excerpts like this:

"At 10:28, the north tower of the World Trade Center collapses. In the meantime, President George W. Bush, who had been visiting a Sarasota, Florida elementary classroom during the attacks, is flown from one 'secure location' to another, finally returning to the White House shortly before 7pm, by which time the 47-story Building 7 of the World Trade Center has also collapsed."

Good grief! It's likely that responsible analysis of our time may only be available long after our time is over.

with so many tiny tidbits of interesting information stuck in here and there it was a learning experience just reading the special highlights throughout the book. There were useful lists of important dates and happenings throughout each chapter and even suggested websites relating to each chapter's material for further information. The way the book was written made for easy understanding of the material and better memory of what was read. Although the book follows a text book formula it was fun to read which is rare. A real find!

I looked for a long time to find a decent world history; one that was neither 10,000 pages nor painfully dry. This is the best I found. It is a very readable book of reasonable length. The authors make good use of sidebars with thought-provoking bits of literature which are scattered throughout the overall history. They also make a good attempt at discussing underlying causes and patterns behind the historical events. I perfer that to a dry recounting of the facts, even if I may not always agree with them on the interpretation. It was surprisingly neutral on religious topics, given the origin of the book.

These 3 puzzles involve the proof of a basic law governing the world of numbers known to be correct in all tested cases — the problem is to prove that the law is always correct. Includes van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions, the Landau-Schnirelmann hypothesis and Mann's theorem, and a solution to Waring's problem.

                                              5 out of 5 stars Truly a pearl........2005-05-12

It is truly a pearl, and pearls have permanence; -- they retain their beauty, from one generation to the next.

So too is the case for this little book. Measured in mathematical generations, you must count back a few;-- back to the last year of the Second World War, and in what was then The Soviet Union; now Russia. The author, A. Y. Khinchin was (and is) a mathematical physicist of World Renown. He has seminal contributions to number theory, to statistics, to information theory, and to statistical physics.

The book is unique in many ways; for one, I believe it is for everyone, -- even if you don't know math. But readers with math background will know that it is possible for writing in math to be both moving and beautiful. This is the case for this little classic. Both the historical background and the subject are unique.

The nature of the book (64 pages in all!) is almost like a personal letter written by a loving teacher to one of his students, but it is much more than that.

At the time, the War had devastated Russia, and almost everyone from the young generation, including students of the sciences was at the front. The casualties everywhere in The Soviet Union were staggering; many had lost parents and relatives during 4 long years of destruction.

Khinchin's student Seryozha was recovering (at the time of the letter) in an army hospital, and he had written his former teacher, asking for math problems to work on. We can't begin to imagine the terrible conditions of army hospitals on the front at this time. The care Khinchin took in responding is moving. In fact Seryozha had only taken one or two beginning classes at university, before being sent to war. And even though Khinchin had only a vague recollection of Seryozha from a class, he truly wanted to send him something he could use, -- something that would make him happy. Students at the front were giving their lives for the rest of the country, and we must remember that this was a war where the difference between good and evil was crystal clear. Khinchin's students were heroes. The book opens with a moving and personal letter, full of empathy, gratitude and love.

As for the mathematics, Khinchin had carefully selected problems of great beauty, problems that can be stated and appreciated with little specialized knowledge; -- in modern lingo, with very few prerequisites. And at the same time, they are problems Seryozha can work on in his hospital bed. They are profound, and they can be attacked with elementary means. Naturally, since 1945, there have been a lot of advances on all three. The problems are from arithmetic (or number theory), and they go under the names: (a) van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions, (b) Landau's hypothesis and Mann's theorem, and (c) an elementary solution of Waring's problem.

By now these three problems take a different form in modern math books, but none as beautiful, in my opinion as Khinchin's in his loving letter to his student written toward the end of the war. Review by Palle Jorgensen, May 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Come on, professors, write more like this!.......2001-03-16

This book is actually a letter from a Russian professor to a student sent off to war. It's short, but won't be an easy read. These are "pearls" but getting the oyster open is going to be tough. It's also remarkable for it's candid revelation of the mathematical process of professional practitioners at various universities in different countries. The first pearl is about a young student name van der Waerden. Yep, the guy who went on to prove so many results in Abstract Algebra and wrote the classic text on the subject influencing Artin and Noether. It's interesting to note, van der Waerden used finite differences in his proof recounted in the first pearl, and he's the only author I know that included finite differences in his abstract algebra text book. Both the candid historical confessions and the conversational exposition make this a great book. It's style and methods should be widely imitated. Come on, professors, write more like this! Future archaeologist of the 20th century will be glad this document is available for it's revelation of the habits of homo professorus mathematicus.

A Y Khinchin was one of the greatest mathematicians of the first half of the twentieth century. He was also famous as a teacher and communicator. Fortunately, several of the books he wrote are still in print in English translations, published by Dover. Like William Feller and Richard Feynman he combines a complete mastery of his subject with an ability to explain clearly without sacrificing mathematical rigour.

This is a short book of three chapters: Chapter 1. Van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions. Chapter 2. The Landau-Shnirelmann hypothesis and Mann's theorem. Chapter 3. An elementary solution of Waring's problem.

These are all difficult problems from the theory of numbers and I think that the elementary proofs that Khinchin describes here are original. This book is a challenging but enjoyable read.

I also recommend his other book on number theory: "Continued Fractions".
