Best book on a founder of Dodge City, Kansas.......1999-03-25
C. Robert Haywood has written a wonderful book on one of the founders (of perhaps two or three men) of Dodge City, Kansas. Wright made millions from cattle and spent it all. Four wives, and 45 years later he died in Dodge City, broke and not famous. He was one of the men who hired Wyatt Earp and was a backer of Bat Masterson, among many other more famous (infamous) Western heros. As President of the Ford County (ie, Dodge City) Historical Society, I assure the reader that no better history of that period has yet been written, except perhaps Robert Wright's own 1913 book on Dodge City. (out of print). Wright is an amazing man, from a family which included a grandfather who was Clerk of the US Supreme Court and a greatgrandfather that was president of the US during the period before the constitution. Great book. (Little known fact: Wright has, in 1999, a greatgrandson, age 80 and a grandson, age 49, still living. That doesn't happen often, but with forty years or so between wife number 1 and wife number 4....) George Laughead Jr.

Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero
ASIN: 1579400949 |
Book Description
The Kid portrays the life of Hall of Fame baseball player Ted Williams before he made it to the majors. The book digs into Ted's high school baseball and the semipro games he played on the sandlots with more detail than any full-life biography could hope to offer. Contains extensive accounts of his three seasons in organized ball, before his major league debut in 1939.
Customer Reviews:
Great information, but.............2006-02-17
This book was a very pleasant surprise. It is one book that details his early years in San Diego. Reading of Ted's high school games, tournaments, the PCL, his exibition games in SD, etc, was great. Unfortunately the second half really bogs down with some information that I was not interested in. Researching the origins of his family; the father's military and work record; etc. were not the things I was looking for. Too much time was spent debating the years his parents were born - and then never really coming to a conclusion. Again, there was too much in the second half of the book that was of very little interest to me. I would rate the first half of the book 5 stars. The second half detracts from the book.
I would read it again.......2006-01-03
Ive read 8 books in the last year about ted williams and I found that this book doesnt talk as much about his life but more of his statistics throughout his years in the PCL , AA , HS , and MLB. It is amazing that they were able to find the statistics they did for his highschool days and the few tournaments he played in. But if you are going for a more complete book about his life I would go with Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero by Leigh Montville.

Pretty good book, but dated.......2003-01-25
This was my first "How To" book on screenwriting. I read this book over 10 years ago. It would be nice if Ms. Stuart updated it.
The book does have some interesting info on what script readers are looking for and how to make it through the "Hollywood maze". Very cool. But what has changed in Hollywood in the last 10-12 years? You'll find more recently published books that attempt to answer that question.
Also, a lot of this book is a tutorial on screenwriting. It's pretty basic, but the information is still good.
There are a lot of other books out there that focus on either the "Hollywood maze" or on the craft of screenwriting; and the content in these other books is more extensive and up-to-date. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad book. But I think it's time we've left the 1980's Joe Ezterhaus/Shane Black world of screenwriting behind us, and instead focused on something better than "high concept".
no wasted words, to the point and extremely helpful.......1999-02-22
Linda's book was easy to read and comprehend. I enjoyed the humor and the honesty. Although, I did not agree on some of the titles Linda used as examples, I did see the reasoning behind those decisions. I rented most of the films and looked for all the qualities that were pointed out. I read the book cover to cover, and then went back to certain areas that most interested me. I studyied it like a text. Then, I went back and looked at it again. My dad and I had done some films together, but he did all the "real stuff",so now on my own, I need the do's and don'ts. It was written in a cute way that was entertaining, and easy to utilize. Good job, Linda. And, thanks for helping the "unknowns".
An absolute must-have if one is serious about screenwriting........1998-05-20
An essential read for the aspiring screenwriter. Stuart's advice is no-nonsense, crystal clear and highly beneficial.
A comprehensive look at the business of screenplays.......1997-10-24
A comprehensive look at the business, structure, and art of writing screenplays. An excellent start for someone new to the business to get an overall sense of what's required to create and sell a successful screenplay.
Good perspective for screenwriters........1997-05-04
Linda teaches/taught a course in Story Analysis at the American Film Institute, and writes from a script reader's point of view. She offers some penetrating insight from the other side of the word processor

Customer Reviews:
One of the best D&D books out there.......2007-09-15
Aplicable to all classes to one degree or another. Very fun content and totaly worth the price.
One of the best "splat" books.......2007-06-27
As an ardent D&D DM, I collect all the generic source books when I can. Some are so-so, but this is one of my faves. Lots of general stuff for players and NPCs, and less "weird/nutty/overpowered or dumb" Prestige classes.
-The prestige classes in the book are pretty good, more for folk who preffer "quest/Roleplaying" than "hack n' slash". The vigilante, dread pirate and street fighter fit in well with "rough and ready", city campaigns and the like.
-Most of the feats are pretty good (though I don't like the one that lets you use a weapon in off hand as light, uh, no, too much potential for abuse)
Over all, pretty good if you're more "adventure/rp" and less "munchkin with dice", but the things in it are good "crunch" as well as "fluff"...it's nice though to see more believeable stereotypes brought to life in the PrCs, and be useful, such as the streetfighter and bloodhound.
-It also adds the "Ninja" as a full class, and the Scout. I dislike the scout's "skirmish" ability as it makes no sense (more damage while firing on the move, eh? Sorry, not believable), but many will like the Ninja, which is different enough from the rogue for them not to overlap too much, and still be cool to play.
:)
Great book for Gamers.......2006-07-05
I find this book very helpful in my D&D games. With the new prestige classes introduce, I have completed my characters and so have my fellow gamers. I would recommend that any serious gamer aquire this book for their collection. It could be a life saver.
Helpfull material.......2006-02-20
This book, besides new classes, and prestige classes, contain a lot of information about new spells for all classes and feats that may lead your new adventures. I rate it OK. a must have book.
D&D Rocks!.......2006-01-15
Been a player for almost three decades. Always seem to be a Dungeon Master and this book is helpful, though lately I tend to just sort of make up rules as I go along.
For those role players who like to read, try The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. This book is about a teen who role plays, goes to another world and uses the skills learned through roleplaying to help him survive. It's an action packed book that's hard to put down. Role Players rejoice!
Book Description
This best-selling Western civilization text has helped hundreds of thousands of students learn about the present by exploring the past. Jack Spielvogel's engaging, chronological narrative weaves the political, economic, social, religious, intellectual, cultural, and military aspects of history into a gripping story that is as memorable as it is instructive. Each chapter offers a substantial introduction and conclusion that sparks students' imaginations by giving them a context within which to understand these disparate themes. And while the single-author narrative makes it easy for students to follow the story of Western civilization, Spielvogel has included dozens of maps and primary sources--including official documents, poems, and songs--that enliven the past while introducing students to the challenges involved in interpreting history. Available in many split options: WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Comprehensive, Fifth Edition (Chapters 1-29), ISBN: 0534600069; WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Volume I, To 1715, Fifth Edition (Chapters 1-16), ISBN: 0534600077; WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Volume II, Since 1550, Fifth Edition (Chapters 13-29), ISBN: 0534600085; WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Volume A: To 1500, Fifth Edition (Chapters 1-12), ISBN: 0534529496; WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Volume B: 1300-1815, Fifth Edition (Chapters 11-19), ISBN: 053452950X; WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Volume C: Since 1789, Fifth Edition (Chapters 19-29), ISBN: 0534529526; WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Since 1300, Fifth Edition (Chapters 11-29), ISBN: 0534600107.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating! Comprehensive!.......2005-06-03
I purchased my first copy of this text several years from a college bookstore, not for a class, but because I picked it up, began browsing, and couldn't bear to put it down. Although textbooks are not usually written for pleasure reading, I've found Spielvogel's book to be truly well-written and efficiently designed. Maps, chronologies (timelines), and numerous illustrations and sidebars make the text inviting and accessible.
One of my favorite features is the inclusion of excerpts from original source documents. It's fascinating to read the writings of a medieval merchant of Paris on the subject of marriage, or excerpts from the court record of the trial of Joan of Arc. It provides a vivid, memorable glimpse of life in a different place and time.
I used this textbook to prepare for the Western Civilization CLEP, and I passed with no difficulty at all, earning 6 credits toward my bachelor's degree. Western Civ is a huge topic, and Dr. Spielvogel has done a terrific job of making it not only accessible, but enjoyable. I recommend this book!
Book Description
There are many reasons why this is the number one selling Western Civilization text in the country. The clear, single-author narrative by Jackson Spielvogel presents history in an appealing and accessible manner. This text truly tells a story that students will understand. WESTERN CIVILIZATION strikes a true balance and provides a synthesis of political, economic, social, religious, military, cultural, and intellectual history. This balance gives students a solid foundation for further study in history. Chapter 29, The Contemporary Western World Since 1970 is a particularly good illustration of the text's balance. The book's documents and maps are useful and superb.
Customer Reviews:
WONDERFUL TEXTBOOK!.......2003-01-21
I READ THIS BOOK FOR WESTERN CIV I & II AND I LOVED IT! NOT TO MENTION THAT I RECEIVED AN A ON BOTH TESTS. EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ IT FOR COLLEGE, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. IT IS SUCH A TREAT TO READ AND I BELIEVE IT BELONGS IN EVERY HOME. EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW WHERE THE CRADLE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION BEGAN, AND HOW THE PEOPLE LIVED AND PROGRESSED THROUGHOUT THE AGES. I CAN'T WAIT TO SHARE THIS BOOK WITH MY CHILDREN SOMEDAY. HAPPY READING!
Western Civilization.......2002-03-27
Book is well designed; choice of content is good. Historical selections are given a tan background which is dark enough to make the text more difficult to read than it might be. This also could be 'old' eyes. Book seems well copy-edited for textual errors. The long lists of primary and secondary sources seems to be a 'feature' of history texts these days. Rather intimidating, particularly for the beginning history student. A shorter list might be more helpful and appropriate. Problems:
If you cannot pronounce a word, you cannot learn it. Some of this may be due to my 'studying at home', but even the student who attends a regular class will be left at a loss on how to pronounce many, many words. More help is needed.
The ancilliary materials, Map Workbook and Original Document Workbook, are not up to the level of the main text. The Map Workbook uses muddy, black and white versions of the colored text maps, and answer some of their own questions, while some of the cities which the student is asked to identify are 'off the map'. The Original Document workbook is a joke. Few selections, 18pt type, lots of white space, typos, layout poor at times. Junk.
There are numerous instances in the main text of clumsy English. One example will have to do:
P.160 "Although the cultural and social developments of the Early Empire were similar to those of the last century of the Republic, there were also significant changes as a result of the new imperial order."
Are they similar or are they different? 'Developments' is the wrong word. 'Also' is a junk word. 'There were significant changes' is weak (intransitive). Better:
"Although some cultural and social features of the Early Empire were similar to those of the last century of the Republic, the new imperial order brought significant changes." Good transition sentence. -17% word count from original.
West.Civ. Textbook.......2002-01-11
The text is easy to read and the book has just the right amount of pictures co-ordinating with the subject matter. A perfect book to study from. On the down side, the book is a very thick and heavy book, but history is massive.
It's Just A Textbook?!?.......2001-09-16
I am taking the class AP European History, and I have to admit it is a very comprehensible textbook. However, it is just a TEXTBOOK! The other people that have written reviews of this book need to be locked up! I mean one girl said she begged her parents to get it for her for Christmas, and another guy said this book was better than sex! Judging by where these people are from I can see they should be easily amused. I can't understand what these people are getting at. If you take the European History class, this book is a requirment. Unless you're taking the class I can't imagine anybody buying this thick book. And if you are a person that likes to read textbooks for fun you should have yourself committed!
If you happen to like miniscule details..........2001-07-11
I personally disliked the book, but as a history book I admit it rates 5 stars. Spielvogel is the master of all impertinent details and sometimes goes too deeply into what is essentially a dead end in history, as it doesn't connect to anything else; it just sits there for no reason except to be memorized and tested on later. He is also sometimes too politically correct, 'unpaid forced laborer' = 'slave' in one sentence. Furthermore, he picks on Italy, in practically each chapter after the end of the Renaissance to WWI he points out a negative thing or two about it, while ignoring other depressed and turmoiled countries. But at least he has some original sources--it was a good idea of his to put them in the book. One other thing, he also spelled Anchorage, AK, as Ankorage.

Wonderful textbook........2007-02-12
My history teacher in high school gave us a choice between this book and another (can't remember the latter's title), and I was more than satisfied with this book. I personally prefer the narrative style and detail of this book. My only further comment is to recommend the concise "Modern European History" by S. Viault as you read/after reading this book. It's a wonderful way to recap the important events of each period, not to mention well-phrased and easy to "get the picture."
Book Description
A groundbreaking new exploration of the promises and perils of biotechnology--and the future of American society.

Garbage of A THEOCRAT.......2006-04-08
Leon R. Kass, M.D., P.h.D., is chairman of the 'President' George W. Bush's Council on Bioethics. This book was intelligently written without any reference to religion but the whole underlying message was "Do not touch Gods property even if it means healing the sick." These religious fundamentalists will do anything to STUNT us in our pursuits of happiness. This guy is for KEEPING PARALYZED PEOPLE PARALYZED. "Dr." Kass is for KEEPING AMPUTEES AMPUTATED. He's for KEEPING the depressed and suicidal DEPRESSED AND SUICIDAL. Ill spare you the bull and say what Dr. Kass really wants to say - "I want you to follow Jesus with all your heart no matter how much pain and suffering you are in. If God made you depressed than thats how you should be. If God made you paralyzed then thats how you should be. If you are miserable in your existance then thats obviously how God wants you to be and thats how you will be with our new conservative laws that will effectively ban progress to help people". For this is the ONLY real argument you can use to support the banning of progress designed to help humans. - He wants everyone to follow the 'divine' rule of sanctity of life, not quality of life - an ugly ethic for a very stupid man.
A first - rate consideration of the human condition.......2004-06-30
This work goes well beyond the framework of a President's Commission Report to be an informative and challenging inquiry into the current state of biotechnological research , and its philosophical implications. It considers in separate chapters the work that is being done to increase human performance- level in sport, to as it were `produce better children', to prolong and increase the quality of human life, and to bring us closer to ` human happiness'. The tone of this work is measured and responsible, the information presented that which has been weighed and tested. Above all in considering each of these areas the debate is carried on with a broad- minded and deep consideration of the meaning of what it is to be human. Thus there is neither the ` gung-ho' utopianism of certain kinds of over- optimistic futurists, nor the paralyzing pessimism of various over- protectors of their own narrow conceptions of the human past. In each of the areas a balanced discussion provides the reader, not with definite and final answers to the problems and possibilities raised, but with suggestions for thought.
We have long since learned that scientific and technological advances usually have their ` price' in one way or another. Here trade-offs in the various areas are made explicit. The new technology which enables us to decide upon the sex of the child has already let to tremendous imbalances in among other areas, the populations of China and India. The prolonging of life is in many cases the prolonging of what seems to be senseless suffering. The ability to enhance moods through chemical means raises the question of what happiness means when it is devoid of the context of human relationship. The possibility of prolonging life indefinitely raises the question of what this might mean for future generations , and the whole spirit of renewal that the birth of a new generation gives to the world.
Leon Kass a moral thinker of the first order, and the director of this enterprise has often been unjustly accused of being a ' super- conservative' and even' fundamentalist'. Such nonsense does not do justice either to Kass impressive scholarly enterprise, or to the great human feeling and consideration with which he approaches these subject. It seems to me that his position is much closer to that of what might be called a traditional liberal meliorist, who is looking to see how the human condition can be improved without those improvements leading to its radical undermining. His understanding in this sense of the place of the family and of human relations in the good life, and in happiness starkly contrast him with those ivory- tower ` transhumanists' and ` cyber- champions' who would replace mankind with their own solipsistic minds.
This is an important work not for its definite conclusions but for the serious contribution it makes to the ongoing quest of humanity to understand itself and define and realize its varying conceptions of the good life.
A Fundamentalist Christian's View of Biotechnology.......2004-05-23
This book is just Leon Klass's latest treatise on all the possible (but not necessarily probable) negative aspects of biological research and progress.
Leon Klass was appointed by George W. Bush as his "Bioethics" committee board chairman - and Leon quickly filled the board with other right-wing christian fundamentalists. To assuage concerns that the board was just a group designed to rubber stamp Bush's foregone conservative opinions he added Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn to the board - a well known scientist out of UC Berkeley.
When it became clear that Dr. Blackburn was too vociferous in her defense of the many benefits to humanity of gene therapy, genetic engineering, stem cell research, etc. - Leon Klass fired her from the board.
Leon Klass is well known for his long history of anti-biotechnology diatribes - including one in which he extols the virtues of a short life (saying that people who want a longer, healthier life are greedy and devaluing the experience of life).
If you choose to read this book - be sure to balance the opinions of this extreme Right fundamentalist - with some modern researchers and ethicists - such as Gregory Stock (UCLA), and John Brockman (see the book The Next Fifty Years : Science in the First Half of the Twenty-first Century).
If you care about helping anyone with Cancer, Alzheimers, Diabetes - or any other serious disease that could potentially be helped by stem cell treatments - you probably won't want to adopt the views of Leon Klass. If Leon Klass' opinions continue to be put into law (as was the Stem Cell ban) progress will slow to a crawl in the US biotech industry and many people will die early deaths due to delayed treatments.
The essential reader on bioethics.......2004-04-06
Comprehensive bodyof work detailing the current debates in biotech
Will be standard reference for the field.......2003-12-19
This is a through and comprehensive study of the issues, more than 300 pages with ample references. The report is organized into sections covering the following topics: Biotechnology and the pursuit of happiness; Better children; Superior performance; Ageless bodies; Happy souls; General reflections. The text was carefully prepared, various viewpoints on each issue are brought in, and the writing is very clear.
The membership of the Council that prepared this report is outstanding. It is one of the best ever assembled to study a scientific policy issue. Thirteen of the seventeen members hold named professorships at leading universities. Their expertise covers the full range of relevant fields, from basic biology through clinical medicine to philosophy, religion and law.
The volume is very timely, given widespread concern over the reappearance of eugenics in recent years. All who are interested in the impact of biotechnology on human life should read this volume.
Book Description
Undertakes a fundamental inquiry into the human and moral significance of developments in biomedical and behavioral science and technology. Seeks to facilitate a greater understanding of bioethical issues.
