    Book Description

Baseball fans love to second-guess managers' strategies and speculate about their styles of managing and Leonard Koppett is no exception. Koppett brings 52 years as a working baseball writer to his understanding of these men in the dugout.

His analysis is based on personal interaction with all of the managers active since 1950 and their descriptions and judgments of the generation of men who preceded them. Every manager inherits his method from some influential manager he played for. Three seminal figures—John McGraw, Connie Mack, and Branch Rickey—form the trunk of a genealogical tree whose branches have eventually intertwined, but whose key characteristics remain identifiable nearly a century later in the style of current headliners like Joe Torre, Jim Leyland, Tony LaRussa, Dusty Baker, and Bobby Cox.

This highly acclaimed study, first published in 1993, has been updated to the year 2000 and now includes some recent winning managers and completes the careers of others.

    5 out of 5 stars Strategy galore!.......2000-10-23

Book has in-depth views of each hall-of-fame manager, and some other lesser known and modern managers that have made their mark on the game.

Unlike The Bill James guide to Baseball, this book focuses on the man and his managerial career, and his stategy. James seems to have written a book on how baseball was generally managed in certain eras. He doesn't focus much on indivual men, as this book does.

For a diehard like me, this book is money well spent. If you are only a causual man, save your money.

5 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING STORY AND A GOOD READ.......2005-10-07

I read very few "star" auto-biographies so have little to judge this one by. But I must say, I was impressed. The writing was good, the story seemed to be truthfully told and it held my interest. I have always enjoyed Kirk Douglas the actor and was pleased that I was able to enjoy Kirk Douglas the autobiographor. Mr. Douglas has certainly led an interesting life and has seemingly been able to keep his prespective on life. As I said, I am impressed and highly recommend this one.

      3 out of 5 stars Interesting Tale.......2005-07-02

This book tells the story of Kirk Douglas, from his humble beginnings in a small upstate New York town to his years in Hollywood. Douglas was born Issur Danielovitch Demsky, the son of illiterate Jewish immigrants. As a Jew, his father could not be hired in the mills or other up-and-coming enterprises in town, so the only work available to him was to go about in the street collecting old rags which he sold to paper mills. Much of this story focuses on the relationship between Issur and his father-Issur felt that his father never gave him recognition, support, or respect. All his life, he struggled in vain to get a single pat on the back from his father. In any case, Issur's life wasn't at all tragic. He showed talent for acting at an early age, managed to get a scholarship to attend college, and then went on to acting school. It was during summer service in a theatrical company that he chose his stage name Kirk Douglas, which he later took as his legal name. This book goes on to tell of Douglas' successes on the big screen and marriages and affairs.

In addition to the struggle for approval with his father, another recurring theme of the book is Douglas' battles with anti-Semitism. The book is no great literary classic, but it can be engaging, and does tell an interesting story for Douglas fans. The details of his early life as the son of poor Jewish immigrants are particularly interesting for the documentation they provide of this little-known chapter of American history.

      4 out of 5 stars Kirk Douglas -- What a Surprise.......2005-04-14

I was quite surprised to like this book as much as I did. As Kirk Douglas' autobiography, I expected it to be a little egotistical and over-explanatory. You know, typical celebrity autobio stuff.

Kirk describes his humble beginnings (a ragman's son) quite capably. He also describes his successes and failures in what appears to be a candid and honest manner. His life has been remarkable, and his written story is believable.

I hope to read his second book soon.

      5 out of 5 stars Kirk Unbuttoned...........2005-02-15

Born in 1916, little Issur Danielovitch grew up in upstate New York, the poorest of the poor. Son of illiterate Russian/Jewish immigrants, taunted by the other children, Issur breaking past every barrier imaginable became the great Kirk Douglas. This is his life story from birth through 70 years of age(before the stroke).

As his life story unfolds in this well written account, you will feel like the tales of his climb out of poverty are being told to you by an old friend. Kirk doesn't hold back. He's as open about his misdeeds as he is with his fine accomplishments.
And he doesn't hesitate to name names either!

He talks about everything. From his troubled boyhood and distant relationship with his father, his dream of making it big on stage, his time spent in the service, his escapades, his loves and family, relationships with the rich and famous, his good-will tours around the world, and of course his films. It is nice that the films are discussed chronologically, and you will know exactly where he was physically and emotionally during the filming. Almost all the films are touched upon and some including "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral", "Lonely Are The Brave", "Lust For Life" and Spartacus", have whole chapters devoted to them. The directors, other cast members, and Hollywood in general, do not get away scott free either.

His writing is funny, poignant, inspirational and heartfelt. There are times when you may not even like the things he has done, and other times may get you thinking deeply or angered about life's circumstances. But you know that he's being about as honest as they come.

There are also many personal photos included of his family, fellow actors, and the good-will trips he made for the United States.

Closing the book after the last page, I was sad to be at the end. Kirk Douglas's words touched me as much as his work in film, and...made me feel not only proud, but lucky to be an American. I am looking foward to reading his other works as well.

"The Ragman's Son" is highly recommended for fans of Kirk, aspiring actors and writers(this is a great example for writing memoirs), and for those who loved to be touched or inspired by a good book.

Way To Go, Issur...Way To Go!
      Enjoy....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars One of the best screen autobiographies .......2005-02-07

Kirk Douglas story of growing up one of the seven - children in an Amsterdam New York Jewish family, and of working and fighting his way to the top of his profession is in one sense a typical American rags to riches story. It is the triumph of ability and will and courage, and another startling example of how the American dream can be realized. It is also on a parallel track a story of assimilation in America, of denial of one's own identity. This is also often part of the American reality. In Douglas case however this was modified by his return to his Jewish religion and identity after having gone through a serious accident. This story has something of the energy and vibrancy of Douglas' screen personality. It is rich with anecdotes including many celebrity anecdotes as Douglas and his wife were long a part of Hollywood's social world. The question of his morality in relation to women , his many 'conquests' is a real one. But all in all he beside being one of the best American actors in the past half - decade has made a very positive contribution to his society.

                          Book Description

British Cultural Studies includes over thirty essays written by expert contributors, covering almost every aspect of culture and identity in Britain today and addressing the current transformations of British culture and identity in the context of globalization. The opening section of the book deals with different conceptions of Britishness and identity, including English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Asian and Black British identities. Section Two then analyses the interplay between tradition and heritage in contemporary culture, whilst the final section looks at the world of lifestyle groups, subcultures, and cultural politics and the way in which they have come in many ways to substitute for notions of Britishness.

This hardback, published by TSR during its heyday, was only promotional material at the time. But now it represents a treasure trove for collectors of TSR's offerings, such as AD&D, Gamma World, and several other games.

This guide not only provides references on SQL Server syntax, but also contains a brief review of best practices with database design. Includes all normal forms with database normalization, indexing, and data integrity.

5 out of 5 stars Best IT Book I Ever Read.......2006-05-06

This book is an amazingly clear and concise book, especially for the "non-gurus" among us. The explanations of general topics like normalization, the history of markup languages (in the XML section) are so well written you could give them to management and even they would understand what you are doing (maybe that's not such a good idea). Full of tidbits like why transaction logs grow so much faster than data files. Nielson writes about SQL Server 2000 as used in the real world, not just as an interesting piece of technology. Bravo! I would give it 10 stars if I could. I leave nitpicking to the gurus.

This book is very good one, I learned a lot, ESPECIALLY about T-SQL, its sectioned in a good manner and the writer language is easy, the only negative point about the book is the briefness of explaination about (INDEXES) which i consider a very very important topic in the SQL in general.
                              Thanks a lot Mr. Neilsen

Currently I am preparing for the exam 70-229 and I studied a lot of SQL Server 2000 Books. But "SQL Server 2000 Bible" shows me the way to learn. It becomes a real bible for me. While I am reading this book I am able to understand what he is trying to say, but it's not happened in other books. I really appreciating his writing skills.

                                Book Description

'It is well this is so terrible! We should grow too fond of it,' said General Robert E. Lee as he watched his troops repulse the Union attack at Fredericksburg on 13 December 1863.

This collection of seven original essays by leading Civil War historians reinterprets the bloody Fredericksburg campaign and places it within a broader social and political context. By analyzing the battle's antecedents as well as its aftermath, the contributors challenge some long-held assumptions about the engagement and clarify our picture of the war as a whole.

The book begins with revisionist assessments of the leadership of Ambrose Burnside and Robert E. Lee and a portrait of the conduct and attitudes of one group of northern troops who participated in the failed assaults at Marye's Heights. Subsequent essays examine how both armies reacted to the battle and how the northern and southern homefronts responded to news of the carnage at Frederickburg. A final chapter explores the impact of the battle on the residents of the Fredericksburg area and assesses changing Union attitudes about the treatment of Confederate civilians.

The contributors are William Marvel, Alan T. Nolan, Carol Reardon, Gary W. Gallagher, A. Wilson Greene, George C. Rable, and William A. Blair.

A great collection of essays by those historians most familiar with the Battle of Fredericksburg. Burnsides excellent biographer, Wiliam Marvel, writes a very balanced essay on Burnside and his high command that was still full of McClellan political generals and some that were inept. Burnside shares blame for failed opportunities but was primarily let down by Franklin who proved to be incapable or neglectful in providing a strong attack on the Confederate right that was necessary to attack the heights of the town on the confederate left. The objective critic of Lee, Alan Nolan, writes an essay substantiating why this battle was Lee's greatest and how Longstreet was so capable that his great critic Douglas Freeman had to praise him. A. William Greene who spent many years with the park service at Fredericksburg (he's now at the new Pamplin Civil War Museum in Petersburg) writes of Burnside's last and lost attempt at continuing the campaign, the mud march. Difficult in bad weather but made worse by the political generals who contributed willingly to his failure. The other essays contribute to the realities of war, the carnage and the effect on Civilians and how the virtually destroyed Pennyslvania Division were later to shout "Remember Fredericksburg" at Gettysburg.

                                  Book Description

According to Glyn-Jones, the central dilemma of history is this: the dynamic that promotes economic prosperity arises largely from the conviction that the material world alone constitutes true 'reality'. Yet that self-same dynamic, developing into a critique of all belief in the supernatural as at best superflous, and at worst a damaging superstition, undermines the authority of moral standards and thus leads eventually to the destruction of the very security, prosperity and artistic achievement on which civilizations rest their claim to greatness. Focussing on dramatic entertainment as the barometer of social change, this book shows in vivid detail how the thesis worked itself out in four different civilizations, those of Greece, Rome and medieval Christendom and now in our own contemporary society.

4 out of 5 stars Some good things, but too ambitious and limited.......2002-07-16

The author, Glynn-Jones, (British) wrote this book in 1995 when she was in her seventies. She worked during her life for a "humanitarian" organization and then for a university as a research fellow.

She does realize that the West has long been in a phase of civilizational decay, and endeavors to study this. This I highly praise, as rare are those who see the ship sink - I mean are strong and honest enough to consider the decadence of their own civilization and even its biological death of its species (as Buchanan courageously with his book The Death of the West.) So she put a lot of work in this project and has produced a thick book, 650 pages.

She relies mainly on the insights of the famous sociologist of decadence, Pitirim Sorokin. This is the first problem, because this is too narrow. She should have been more critical and see what is lacking or simply wrong with Sorokin, and also draw from the other leading cultural sociologists, Arnold Spengler and his American disciple Arnold Toynbee, both of whom Glynn simply dismiss as being without insights. This is a dead track, as Sorokin for example restricted his study project too much to the opposition between religion / asceticism vs materialism / hedonism within religion and art, and this mainly for Europe. Thinkers such as Spengler, Toynbee and Francis P. Yockey (Imperium) had a broader and were very insightful, contrary to Glynn's prejudice. This is not meant to demean Sorokin, but only to criticize narrow-sightedness for such broad studies.

What Glynn does is to rehash Sorokin's analyses from a Puritan / Calvinist perspective. Whereas Sorokin saw Protestantism as a catastrophic decay (think of the destruction / trashing of European medieval and renaissance art, puritanism, fundamentalism, individualism, etc.), Glynn has to disagree and even speaks positively of Puritanism, its censorship, etc. Her book turns out into a Calvinist version of Sorokin works according to the idea of the fundamentalist preacher Francis Schaeffer, as exposed in his book Escape from Reason, of book replete with historical and philosophical errors. She refers to the book in her introduction, I read it, saw it was worthless in itself, but useful to understand Glynn's thinking. Glynn seems obsessed by the opposition between puritanism, religious fundamentalism on one hand, and hedonism on the other hand, and this is probably why she draws on Sorokin.

Another limitation with her book is that she restricts herself to European civilization, while claiming in the book title to deal with civilizations in general. To the contrary, when Spengler humbly named his book "The Decline of the West", he did consider non-Western civilizations as well. Besides Glynn see the European medieval period as distinct civilization from its modern continuation, whereas I think the latter should not be separated from the former, bu seen as a long agonic phase of decay.

The last 300 pages of the book deal with the period after World War Two, where she try to vindicates Sorokin's prediction. This is the only thing I found interesting as she try to pursue Sorokin's work, albeit from a puritan perspective and without the support of a research team. As she had insisted on the entertainment culture of decaying Rome, etc. she can expose and condemn the decadence of the American way of life, its superficiality, its show business, sex, pornography, abortion, lack of biological reproduction. All of those changes are quite obvious, and she sometimes as some good insights. For example, concerning the suicide of the white race (p. 515) , she sees that liberal (capitalist) government favor non-white immigration because they think in terms of economics (thus short term.) I noted that she is very much for the Jewish religion, but see Islam as a great danger, something strange given that the political influence of Moslems is very weak and that they are as fundamentalist as she is concerning the moral issues she focuses on.

I welcome any serious book on the decay of the West, so I welcome this book, which is probably the best one around for Puritans and other fundamentalist Protestants, which I am definitely not. However, other readers will find many more insights and issues in books such as Spengler's Death of the West, Yockey's Imperium, Buchanan's Death of the West, Duke's My Awakening. And if they are courageous, they will try to read Sorokin's and Toynbee's voluminous works. So doing, one avoids the limitations in Glynn's book.

It is possible that no book written in the last 50 years has had an influence as profound and far-reaching as Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Kuhn's argument that scientific knowledge does not develop cumulatively, but rather proceeds by a series of "paradigm shifts," captivated not only philosophers of science, but scholars in a wide range of academic disciplines. The Road Since Structure is a follow-up to his landmark work and a look at Kuhn's theory since the book's original publication in 1962.

In keeping with Kuhn's wishes (he died in 1996), editors James Conant and John Haugeland organized The Road Since Structure to include 11 philosophical essays written since 1970. In the first part of the book, Kuhn spells out his theory as it developed in the 1980s and 1990s; in the second part, he replies to a number of criticisms and misreadings. The third section is a fascinating interview with Kuhn conducted less than a year before he died. For general interest readers, the lengthy interview--in which Kuhn candidly and engagingly discusses the trials and tribulations of his life and philosophical career--will probably be the most interesting part of the book. For those attuned to Kuhn's controversial work, The Road Since Structure is an indispensable aid for understanding his theory as it developed and for appreciating the full force of his replies to a host of critical objections. As always, Kuhn's clarity and fluid prose render accessible a field fraught with opaque writing. --Eric de Place

                                  Book Description

Thomas Kuhn will undoubtedly be remembered primarily for The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, a book that introduced one of the most influential conceptions of scientific progress to emerge during the twentieth century. The Road since Structure, assembled with Kuhn's input before his death in 1996, follows the development of his thought through the later years of his life. Collected here are several essays extending and rethinking the perspectives of Structure as well as an extensive and revealing autobiographical interview.

                                  3 out of 5 stars Kuhn's missing link.......2006-01-12

This posthumously published book is a collection of papers published between 1970 and 1993 together with a transcript of an autobiographical interview given by Kuhn in 1995, a year before his death. The book also contains a complete bibliography of his works.

Most of the important contributing philosophers of science in the twentieth century formed their views by reflection on the great scientific revolutions in modern physics, notably relativity theory and quantum theory. But in the first paper in this book, "What are Scientific Revolutions?" (1987), Kuhn reports that his most formative intellectual experience was his attempt in 1947 to understand the physics of Aristotle - what in his autobiography he calls his "Aristotle experience."

What distinguishes the contrast between the physics of Aristotle and Newton is the vast gulf in time, which makes their contrast quite radical in comparison to the contrast between, say, Einstein's theory and Newton's immediately preceding theory. Also the ascendancy of Newton's theory was not due to a decisive empirical test, like the eclipse experiment that decided for Einstein's theory over Newton's. It is this radical contrast between Aristotle's and Newton's physics that occasioned Kuhn's comparably radical thesis of scientific revolutions, that they are nonempirical conversions from one "paradigm" to another incommensurably different one.

When Kuhn set forth his thesis of scientific revolutions in 1962 in his famous book titled The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, the book was not welcomed by philosophers of science, who expected and demanded a coherent philosophy of language and a linguistic analysis for the Kuhnian thesis. The papers in Road Since Structure are in large part the fossil record of Kuhn's successive and unsuccessful attempts to evolve his missing link between history of science and philosophy of science. The papers show his groping, eclectic, and somewhat naive efforts at philosophy of language by a scholar who was firstly a historian of science.

Readers interested on my further comments on Kuhn are invited to read my book titled History of Twentieth-Century Philosophy of Science or Google my web site philsci for free downloads of my book by chapter - and also to read my other book reviews in this Amazon web site.

Unless you're a research scientist or have found yourself wrapped up in the miniscule debates over Kuhn's writings ( eg. "What exactly IS a paradigm, perfesser?"), this book is delightful! Of particular interest are the two essays "What Are Scientific Revolutions?" and "The Trouble With The Historical Philosophy of Science." Some of this can be found in "The Essential Tension" as he was always repeating himself to different audiences.

3 out of 5 stars Did Kuhn ever recover from 'Structure'?.......2003-02-08

As with (to a lesser extent) Feyerabend, Kuhn wrote his contreversial opus in the mid 60's. I think it's safe to say that anything hinting at anti-authoritarianism, as it seemed to do on the surface, was begging to be misunderstood. Honestly, after 'paradigm shift' became a bastardized slogan for everything from class-struggle to new-age revelations through meditation, I'm not sure Thomas Kuhn ever recovered from this world-wide misunderstanding. What I read in "The Road Since Structure" corroborates that as we find an author that constantly needs to clarify, "This is what I'm saying. This is what I'm not saying. Now that we're clear, let me repeat myself!"

First, as anyone who's read "Structure of Scientific Revolutions" knows, Kuhn has no talent for clear writing. Nothing's changed since. These essays, although more concise and to the point (perhaps that's Kuhn having learned his lesson) are still difficult reads. The first section, I think, is the book's 'payoff'. It is here that he reiterates, clarifies and expands on what is and is not scientific revolution, incommensurability and paradigm. Two essays in particular, "What are Scientific Revolutions?" and "The Road Since Structure" are worth the price of the book alone.

The second section consists of replies to Kuhns many and in an ideological sense, far ranging critics. Most of these papers were written for symposia and are difficult in the sense of listening to only one end of a phone dialogue. As he is generally responding to papers of others, without access to those papers, it is akward reading to say the least. Still, for those of us scientific philosophy nuts, the essays "Reflections on My Critics" (part of a symposium featuring Lakatos, Popper and Feyerabend amongst others) and "The Natural and the Human Sciences" are excellent illucidations of Kuhns thought.

Honestly, the interview, I didn't like. Much of it is Thomas Kuhns history and as for the reviewer below that bemoans a self-absorbed Kuhn talking about himself and his "intellectual project", I'm not sure what else you should expect from an interview of a philosopher. Interviewers like to ask about the interviewee and philosopher's like to talk about what they work on. Honestly though, if you are at all familiar with Kuhns life, this interview offers little that you didn't already know.

                                  3 out of 5 stars An interesting look at a self-absorbed life.......2001-07-26

Having just finished Steve Fuller's decimation of Kuhn's significance, I come away much less impressed with this book. I immediately noticed that Fuller's claim that Kuhn was beholden to Harvard President James Bryant Conant seems to continue after the grave, since the editor of this set of papers and interviews is none other than Conant's grandson! But putting that aside (sheer coincidence perhaps?), the final interview shows just how self-absorbed Kuhn was. Considering what was going on in the larger world around him, he seemed forever preoccupied by a very private intellectual project that never attracted the attention that buzzwords like "paradigm" did. Fuller read this interview in the original obscure Greek philosophy journal where it appeared, and makes some sharp observations about Kuhn's tendency to deny all influences -- including highly publicized ones like Ludwik Fleck. This is not to say that Kuhn's intellectual project wasn't interesting, but it's amazing just how unwilling he remained to deal with the way his work was used. Lucky for him, he was professionally ensconced in the Ivy League and so never really had to bother much with what the sub-Ivy intellectuals thought.

5 out of 5 stars What made Kuhn tick, and more.......2001-03-09

There are three parts to this book: essays Kuhn wrote to respond to the most substantial criticisms of THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS, essays that extend and elaborate on his thinking since STRUCTURE, and, most remarkable, a very long and revealing interview or discussion with three Greek philosophers of science less than a year before his death.

To me, the interview is the most interesting part of the book, mainly because it's autobiographical. I am told by people who knew him that, after the hullabaloo over STRUCTURE, Kuhn became quite reticent, at least in public, and certainly about himself. Well, reticent is the last thing he is in this interview. He speaks quite openly about his parents, his early education, his attraction to physics, his time at Harvard, his decision to move from physics to philosophy and history of science, the issues in history and philosophy of science that moved him most deeply, his opinions of colleagues. In this interview, Thomas Kuhn becomes a person, not merely an icon. It's surprising, moving, and instructive, and anyone who's ever wondered about the man who wrote THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS will find the interview, as well as the essays in this book, well worth the read. Enjoy! And wonder!

                                    Book Description

Unique in perspective, this first-of-its-kind book offers an introduction to coastal and marine sanctuary management -- the art and science of seeing the interrelationship between coastal land issues and adjacent marine sanctuary concerns. With a focus on understanding, monitoring, and managing these two related areas for their mutual benefit, it uses the U.S. National Marine Sanctuary program as a vehicle to discuss the physical nature of America's coasts, their environmental problems, and various other conservation strategies associated with the field of coastal resource management. Each major chapter is approximately 1/3 science, 1/3 policy, and 1/3 management. Looks at issues such as coastal hazards, coastal pollution, ocean dumping, offshore oil development and transport, and open space preservation and management. Explores the full range of social, cultural, legal, political, economic, and ethical aspects of coastal and marine sanctuary management. Emphasizes programs that are moving toward integrated coastal resource management. Discusses the pros and cons of various issues and gives specific recommendations for moving "from the problem" to a possible solution. Highlights The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary -- one of the newest and most extensive units in the Program, and the second largest sanctuary in the world. Links coastal resource management (traditionally "dryside" only) with ocean/sanctuary management (traditionally "wetside" only). Relates coastal issues to key concepts of traditional (folk) resource management as well as to modern-day U.S. environmental thought. Includes case studies for each of the problem issues. For anyone involved with a coastal environment, including those in government, education, parks and recreation, planning, management, etc.

5 out of 5 stars A geographer's keen perception of how to protect our coasts.......2004-08-14

I studied with Prof. Klee 15 years ago at San Jose State and his passion for protecting the coastal environment was as strong then as it is now; this book exhibits that love for the discipline of applying a multi-pronged environmental studies approach to the coast's 'wet and dry' sides. The book takes an eclectic geographer's assessment of the problems facing this precious environment. Good case studies -marine sanctuary, sloughs, creek pollution, oil extraction, hazards--are taken from the Monterey Bay area where Klee lives and has witnessed the various impacts he knows so well. Planners, scientists, politicians (not to mention public librarians in Santa Cruz county who should have this in the local collection!) and citizens who don't mind a textbook format would greatly benefit from this title. Our coasts will also benefit from having well-informed decision makers who NEED mutiple angles to view and protect this resource. Go Gary!
