The Word Detective: Solving the Mysteries Behind Those Pesky Words and Phrases
ASIN: 1565123506 |
Book Description
"Romance is everything," said Gertrude Stein. And for those of us in love with words, the origins of love words have their own romance. So what is the etymology of the word romance? And for that matter, why is it that a kiss is a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh, and when two lovers woo they still say I love you?
With wry wit and a wealth of word lore, Evan Morris, aka the Word Detective, answers these questions and traces the often surprising origins and evolution of the language of love--from flirtation to happily ever after, with stops along the way to examine betrayal, tryst, adultery, and all the rest of that hanky-panky. Organized alphabetically, sprinkled with quotations from lovers throughout history, Making Whoopee is brimming with entertaining information, from terms of endearment to the terms of the settlement.
Readers will discover that when liaison first appeared in English it was as a cooking term (for egg yolks used to bind ingredients together); originally to flirt meant to snub (hardly the sort of behavior that would lead to a date!); before we had puppy love, the same phenomenon was known as calf love (in both cases the implication being that such affection was destined to fade as the critters grow up); before a hunk was an attractive man, it was slang for a large, slow, and stupid man; way back when, chaperone was the hood worn by a noblewoman, and only later did it take on the metaphorical meaning of one who "shelters" a young woman from the world; Milton was the first to use the term love-lorn; and concupiscence is just a fancy way of saying the hots.
Making Whoopee is a token of affection guaranteed to make even the most cynical suitor or skeptical sweetheart swoon.

The Mensa Genius Quiz-A-Day Book
ASIN: 0517226677
Release Date: 2005-10-04 |
Book Description
This book consists of a series of fun IQ tests, starting at a normal level and progressing through to an advanced stage.
Customer Reviews:
Why Bother?.......2003-06-13
First of all, its rather "stupid" to buy a book that appeals by offering the reader that it'll "boost their IQ". Your IQ doesn't simply skyrocket (or go up) by doing a book full of foolish exercises, in fact doing these exercises will do either of the following to you: 1) make you feel rather confident and elite OR 2) make you feel stupid and throw away the book because you feel IQ doesn't prove anything. In either case the reader has a right to feel that way, however, one should be aware that an IQ test simply serve as a rather easy way to determine a person's abilities because there are no better way to do so. If there were better, complex and accurate ways to determine intelligence abilities we wouldn't be wasting time and money and screwy pictures. Nevertheless, buy this book to amuse yourself with screwy pictures and exercises and feel insecure about your abilities OR laugh at others and feel good about yourself. In either case if the book has made you feel superior for the day then it is certainly worth your time and money, else don't buy it.
Skewed IQ Scale.......2002-06-07
This is a comment on MENSA: CHALLENGE YOUR IQ by Harold Gale and Carolyn Skitt. As a psychologist who has administered thousands of IQ tests, I was intrigued (and disappointed) by the skewed nature of the IQ distribution used in this book. The standard deviation of most commercial IQ tests is 15. Thus, an IQ of 130 is two standard deviations above the mean, which falls at the 98th percentile and qualifies the examinee for membership in Mensa. The IQ scale used in CHALLENGE YOUR IQ is grossly inflated. The standard deviation appears to be 24! Thus, a person who scores 115 on a commerical IQ test would get an equivalent IQ of 124 in this book. This is a whopping difference and is bound to make readers think they are far smarter than is actually the case.
worth your while.......2002-01-03
as per previous reviews, the only fault I have with the book is that it does tend to get repetitive and, as far as challenging goes - well, some of the problems are a measure of sheer tediousness rather than smarts. But perhaps that's good in developing EQ so a benefit to be gained anyway. If you like 'puzzles' then this is not a book for you. It is a series of IQ tests.
....Challenge your IQ.......2000-10-04
Something usefull to know about this book i think is that it is very repetitive; That is the book consists of 8 graduating tests, but you are introduced to the majority of the puzzles in the book in the first 2 or 3. After that they are reconfigured to be more difficult but they are still the same problems. I certainly found it difficult grinding out some of the tedious exercises but would have apreciated a greater variety of puzzles myself. I felt the book didn't require or prompt a big deal of creative thinking.
two words-Buy it.......2000-08-18
The problem with most IQ like books is that they either are too easy{to sort of boost your ego] or teach irrelevent suff. This book is one of the best of these kinds of books.made by Mensa, and is keeping to every thing you need to boost your IQ

Customer Reviews:
Not bad, but not great.......2007-07-05
This book was presented at a much lower level than I expected. I would find it hard to "master matlab" using this book, but I suppose it is good for people with very little programming background. If you know how to program and simply want a book to quickly bring you up to speed look elsewhere - this book is a somewhat watered down and slow.
good book.......2007-02-12
I purchased this textbook for the matlab course taken in university. I always can find something interesting or useful inside of it, and knowledge inside of it was all written in details.
MatLab programming.......2006-11-03
I use this book everyday. It is easy to find what you need right away. Although, MatLab has demos that you can use to write programs or m-scripts, the book has features that are not in the demos that will make writing scripts much easier. It doesn't go into great detail with more difficult plots but allows for the those who just need 1-D, 2-D and simple 3-D plots to plot data points easily and fast. This is definitely the bible for first time users of MatLab.
for computationally intensive tasks.......2006-09-05
There's a lot here. Matlab has grown tremendously, and the authors give a comprehensive walkthrough of Version 7. It is directed at the programmer who might want to perform intensive computations. The Matlab scripting language is explained, as a powerful way to store a sequence of commands in a scripting file. For many practical uses, M-files are the way to go. It is how you store your Matlab expertise, so to speak.
The chapter on matrix algebra shows powerful tools for matrix manipulations. Useful for many types of linear systems analysis.
Now, you can even tie Matlab into actual programming languages. From a C or Fortran program, you can invoke Matlab, and vice versa. While there are also ways to run Matlab and access Java class files.
But if you want symbolic algebra capabilities, I suggest you learn Mathematica. That was the latter's original forte and is still its core strength. Whereas Matlab was always about pure number crunching.
I like the Help button better........2006-06-23
Not only is the on-line Matlab help better, its free. This book is basically a copy of the HELP. I'd give it no stars, but they wont let me.

Kenneth Davis, popular purveyor of stuff you should know but never learned, turns his research engine to the land of Job and Jesus. Ever wonder who wrote the Bible, what the difference is between a disciple and an apostle, or how the Dead Sea Scrolls measure up? Davis tackles the entire Bible, book by book, from Genesis to Revelation, offering succinct capsules of the action and backgrounders that are as entertaining as the tabloids--except that Davis's information is reliable. On every page, you can see the immense amount of research he has put into this work, drawing on the most up-to-date scholarship and presenting it in fresh, easy-to-swallow doses. Chronologies at various points put historical events into perspective. The high point of Don't Know Much About the Bible comes in the New Testament section, where Davis compares the different versions of the Gospels for the various episodes in Jesus' life and offers insights on issues that are still discussed today. By the way, did you know that Jesus' name was really Joshua and that he wasn't born in the year 1? More tidbits await. --Brian Bruya
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
The Bible, author Kenneth Davis explains, fits that definition of a "classic" offered by Mark Twain: a book that people praise and don't read. But this entertaining historical study will likely compel listeners to reach for their dusty copies of the world's most-owned but least-understood anthology once again. And not simply because the author reminds us of the drama and intrigue, the tales of rape, impaling, and ethnic cleansing routinely found in its pages. Davis paints the larger historical context in which the Bible was written, providing a sense of the culture and environment in which the familiar stories came to life. Calling on new research and scholarship into the Bible's composition, he provides fascinating background to dimly remembered stories that gives them renewed impact. Using a series of easy-to-follow questions and answers, he offers explanations about when and by whom the Bible was written; how the stories of other traditions influenced the Judeo-Christian teachings; where the Garden of Eden might have been located; why an earthquake may have played a part in the "walls tumbling down" at Jericho; why Jesus may not have said everything we think he did, and much more. He also points out that mistranslations from the original Hebrew have made their way into modern versions of the Bible, explaining where and how they occurred. Conceding that his program will anger some, as it challenges many cherished but mistaken assumptions about the Bible, Davis also hopes that listeners recognize that Christian belief and uncovering the truth are not at odds in this program, but rather that learning and wisdom, even when they reach unsettling conclusions, can ultimately complement faith. (Running time: six hours, four cassettes) --Uma Kukathas
Book Description
With wit, wisdom, and an extraordinary talent for turning dry, difficult reading into colorful and realistic accounts, the creator of the bestselling Don't Know Much About®, series now brings the world of the Old and New testaments to life as no one else can in the bestseller Don't Know Much About® The Bible. Relying on new research and improved translations, Davis uncovers some amazing questions and contradictions about what the Bible really says. Jericho's walls may have tumbled down because the city lies on a fault line. Moses never parted the Red Sea. There was a Jesus, but he wasn't born on Christmas and he probably wasn't an only child.
Davis brings readers up-to-date on findings gleaned from the Dead Sea Scrolls and Gnostic Gospels that prompt serious scholars to ask such serious questions as: Who wrote the Bible? Did Jesus say everything we were taught he did? Did he say more? By examining the Bible historically, Davis entertains and amazes, provides a much better understanding of the subject, and offers much more fun learning about it.

Natural man trying to describe the spiritual........2007-10-15
1 Corinthians 2:14-16 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritualy discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ." (King James)
And if you DO know quite a bit about the Bible?.......2007-09-19
"If this is divinely inspired, couldn't God get that year right?"
That's a quote from Davis dealing with the year Jesus was born. It seems that the Bible isn't terribly concerned with Jesus' BD. There are still cultures in our world that don't care about birthdates. And that proves what, Davis? That God can't get things right in your own personal vision? Or, as I see it, is it more likely that the God of the Bible knows exactly what to stress and when to stress it; after all, "At the right time, Christ died for the ungodly."
Davis finds countless opportunities to question the Bible's accuracy and to question God himself. Frankly I think Job did a better job of this then Davis ever could.
As has been said elsewhere, much of Davis' critique is outdated and disproved, so I won't revisit that here. I will say that SOME of what he writes is true (are you really shocked to learn Jesus wasn't born on December 25th or what Noah's ark really looked like?). Still, once I knew Davis' agenda was one of contempt for his subject, I couldn't wade through his self-serving opinions to sift out those truths. I must also say that this is Davis' MO for all of his works.
Using "CE" and "BCE" in place of "BC" and "AD" also affects me like nails on a chalkboard. They have nothing to do with correcting a dating design and everything to do with political correctness. Juvenile.
If you are serious about the Bible and have already studied it (cover to cover, right?) and read some of the other recommended reading found here, then Davis' book "might" amuse you. It made me sad that Davis is too busy trying to be amusing and condescending to really seek God.
An Outstanding Collection Of Information And Knowledge.......2007-09-01
The title is a bit misleading in that it suggests this book is only for biblical newcomers. In fact, it contains much that will be of interest to both the uninitiated and those already somewhat familiar with the Bible. The introductory chapters contain a tremendous amount of useful facts and knowledge about Judeo-Christian history. Some of it, such as how the emperor Constantine first allowed Christianity to be openly practiced in the Roman empire around 312 CE, I already knew. But there was still much new that I learned. For example, this book explains why the additional biblical texts known as the Apocrypha are included in Roman Catholic versions of the Bible but not in the Jewish canon or Protestant versions of the Bible. This is because the Apocrypha were later books written in Greek rather than Hebrew. Primarily for this reason they were excluded from the final Jewish canon but included by Catholics in their Greek Septuagint version of the Bible. Much later the Protestant Reformation chose to exclude the Apocrypha also. This is only a small sample of some of the fascinating knowledge contained in the early chapters.
Most of the rest of the book offers insightful and well researched interpretations of both the Old Testament and New Testament, examined book by book in chronological order. Much of what Davis wrote I had already read elsewhere. But once again I learned many new things, especially about the historical and cultural context in which the Bible was written.
I feel bad that many of the negative reviewers here are so stuck in a narrow minded and fundamentalist form of religious faith that they are unwilling to accept and appreciate all the excellent scholarly research that has been done and is still being done on perhaps the most important and influential book in human history - the Bible.
This is great reading for anyone, religious or secular, who is open minded, intellectually curious and wants to learn more about this fascinating subject.
Great book...learn what you THINK you know !!!!.......2007-08-07
If you want to learn about the important "facts" of the old & new testaments... this is the book to read. It doesn't try to sway you one way or the other, but gives you the quotes and info to do so yourself. I never realized, for instance, that there were so many differences between the 4 scriptures of Luke, Mark, Matthew and John. There's a lot I can say,l but I don't want to ruin it for someone who never read the Bible and THINKS they know what it says. Let's put it this way... it's not quite like hollywood movies or what your Sunday school teacher or your parents try to convey. Great Stuff !!!!!!!!!!!!
read it...no disrespect intended..........2007-06-18
Kenneth C. Davis has written a very enjoyable and easily understood explanation of the Bible. I didn't find it offensive or disrespectful in the least. In fact it helped me understand alot more of the Bible and eased so many of those burning questions in my mind. Using humor and the ability to break down the mystique it can help people appreciate the Bible more.

Customer Reviews:
An important record of Indian life.......2002-07-30
There are two ways of looking at this book. For any serious student, anthropologist or researcher interested in the history of the Plains Indians, this is clearly an important book. Catlin offers detailed, first-hand descriptions of Indian culture and customs of the 1830s, preserving in text and pictures a way of life that would soon disappear.
For the more casual reader, "Letters and Notes" still offers much, but you will need to be more selective. Catlin, for example, provides meticulous descriptions of the Indians' clothing, jewelry, weapons, cooking instruments and other artifacts. The reader can get bogged down in these sections, so unless you have a particular interest in any of these things, it's best to skim past them.
Skip ahead to the action. Find the sections where Catlin recounts events that he witnessed or directly participated in. Catlin's account of buffalo hunting, for example, is vivid and exciting. Some other parts are funny, such as the dog feast.
Above all, be sure to read the description of the Mandan religious ceremony. It's grotesque, to be sure, but you'll never forget it.
The Ultimate Source.......2000-05-10
Once in a while you come across a book that all other research documents for that subject matter refer to. Catlin, Lewis And Clarke. In North American ethnography, these two are the ultimate reference sources even though they present a viewpoint that not all would agree with. We are extremely fortunate that these texts are so readable also.
Fascinating!.......1999-10-20
Although the writing style is archaic, to the modern reader, and his art is stiff and two-dimensional, George Catlin manages in these volumes to convey the wonder and limitless beauty of a wild land. He captures the individual personality of many of the warriors, chiefs and women he met. George Catlin saw with an unusual clarity the inevitable end of the way of life of his subjects. And saw it long before most in civilized America. His goal was to record the variety, habits, and lifestyle of a people he realized would soon be gone. In the process he left us with a work of ethnography that is detailed, objective, and not riddled with interpretation. AND--most of it is a great read.

Book Description
Carl Sagan, writer and scientist, returns from the frontier to tell us about how the world works. In his delightfully down-to-earth style, he explores and explains a mind-boggling future of intelligent robots, extraterrestrial life and its consquences, and other provocative, fascinating quandries of the future that we want to see today.

The antidote to science class.......2007-07-09
Most of us who have been educated in the American public school system quickly learned to dread science classes as one of the more boring times of the day. The study of science class in elementary school was usually a teacher reading the text and often being reluctant to address any questions that were not covered in the teacher's edition. In high school the teacher (often hired more for their coaching expertise than academic considerations) would assign reading from the text and not welcome questions not covered in the teacher's edition. Learning was considered accomplished when the students could relate facts memorized from the text. Along the way most of us lost the desire to ask 'why' and simply calculated the time until we could escape as we memorized what was necessary to pass the next test.
Dr Sagan has managed to make science interesting again, to awaken the spark of curiosity that has sadly been extinguished in so many. His writing is clear and eloquent as he invites his readers to share his love of asking 'why?' He explains how scientists look at problems, how to question authorities and determine their worth. In short he manages to undo some of the damage inflicted by years of boring science classes.
This is a compilation of articles Sagan wrote for various magazines (including PLAYBOY - maybe sometimes it was purchased for the articles) during the mid to late 70's. The overlying theme is the general allure of science but also it provides a description of how scientists think about the world around them. The topics covered range from popular science fiction, mythology, frauds and pseudoscience and the 'current state' of scientific research. The age of the various articles has in some cases obscured the work - few readers today have heard of Velikovsky, a charletan who had a wide following in the 1940's and 50's, for example. In other instances the passage of time has added a new dimension to the article - we can see how well the then planned scientific research was carried out and what the results have been so far.
The format of short articles that can be read in any order lends itself to reading in short bursts (as opposed to settling in for a few uninterrupted hours) making this a perfect book to take along to fill in those odd minutes on the morning commute, or waiting to pick up the kids. Each article takes just a few minutes to read but will provide plenty to think about long after.
Science for the average reader, masterfully presented.......2007-06-12
Like Sagan's "Dragons of Eden," "Broca's Brain" is great food for thought. And with masterful writing. Consider these lines:
"But those with a set of beliefs they profess to feel deeply about, which they have selected without an unbiased sifting through the facts and the alternatives, will feel uncomfortably challenged by searching questions. Anger at queries about our beliefs is the body's warning signal: here lies unexamined and probably dangerous doctrinal baggage."
Good to help you gain insight into Dr. Sagan's mind.......2007-05-10
"Broca's Brain: Reflections on the Romance of Science" is a series of essays by Carl Sagan. I'm rather a fan of Carl Sagan's works and got this book expecting that it would be more of a focused book rather than the variously directed chapters that it turned out to be. I absolutely loved "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark" and was a little disappointed by this work. Not some of Sagan's best work but still worth a read if you really enjoy his writing and can overlook when he starts to wander into the realm of overly zealous green supporter.
Good Book on the Popularized History of those Brainy Scientists........2006-09-20
It's a good paperback on great scientists.-Warning!-When you are reading this book, remember Sagan is playing on your "lay-man's understanding of common falsehoods.".-Example-When Sagan writes about Einstein ,coming to America, via Switzerland. The idea that Einstein was squeezed out by the approaching Nazis and then Einstein "offers voluntarily" his services to the USA-English military,is just not the whole truth .Einstein knew he would run the show,of all major American scientific policies.Remember that Einstein was already listening to the Zionists of New York and beyond.Einstein was not a lone caveman or an aloof professor.Einstein had a suitcase,by the door, since World War One. He was always being informed about the American military and its resources and manpower.Einstein knew that the American cowboy chiefs, could become the "New Nazis" ,if not instructed properly by the Jewish intellectuals ,like himself. I feel ,that the elite German Jews just simply 'pulled the plug' on the judeophobic German christians, and watched Hitler's Third Reich predictably slide down the drain. It was all predetermined and nutured to happen. The Nazi government was then cleverly and mischievously destroyed.Stalin fenced in the Eastern-European christian leftovers, and fettered the docile Slavs. All pre-guessed by the jewish Zionists.-Sagan acts as if you already have a biased and preconceived fairy-tale notion about weighty men like Einstein,Michael Faraday,Thomas Edison and Isaac Newton.I think that this book is fun to read ,just to simply "read between those lines" of what Sagan hashes out, for the fascination of the no-brainer's among us.If Sagan is blowing out smoke-screens, maybe Edward Teller was right about Sagan ,"not being a real scientist".
Stories that relate the essence and romance of science........2006-04-17
When science is written about it can be dull or it can be a mysterious, and fascinating subject that has a special appeal. Carl Sagen certainly had a rare ability to deliver the latter. The book is a series of short stories, but they blend togetheer in a strangely beautiful way. There seems to be a philosophic perspective throughout the book that is there, but elusive. The essence of science, not just scientific method, is a wonderful thing that you will get a glimps of here, many times. Most people don't think of science as something adventurous or heroic, but it is and you can read it, indeed feel it, in these stories. I highly recommend the book to any thinking person concerned with or interested in science. Fun as well as edifying. Some history of science, some astronomy, a personal view of science fiction (by a master), the future of science, questions and paradoxes and more are covered, to some extent.
