Book Description
This curiosity driven 81 year old businessman-turned-writer, has followed his role model, Montaigne, with these personal essays on 28 subjects such as conversation, sports, war, religion, sex, death, television and Thanksgiving turkey.
After the University of Michigan and Harvard Business School, Gerson spent four war years as a navy officer in the amphibious forces and mine sweeping, receiving three decorations. His report on the sinking of the LST 349 in the Mediterranean was privately published in 1945.
His business career includes Gersons Jewelers, Young & Rubicam, Elgin Watch and Gerson, Howe & Johnson, a tradition breaking all fee-no commission marketing department store in Chicago that he founded and ran for 16 years. To promote his firm, Gerson wrote and published Tomorrow's Advertising Agency (1967) and BE BIG SOMEWHERE and Other Essays on Marketing (1977). In 1979, at age 60, he followed his college plan of becoming a full-time writer, doing it his way, without having to earn money. Gerson has written the equivalent of 100 average size books: personal history, fiction, journal and essays. His papers will be preserved in Duke University's John Hartman Special Collection Library for Sales, Advertising and Marketing. Providing fertilizer for the author's opinions were the many diverse people he worked with in marketing hundreds of products for companies including Sears, Tenneco Automotive and Orville Redenbachers popcorn, plus Charles Percy's first election to the United States Senate.
Add his experiences in numerous community organizations such as president, the Merchandising Executives Club, executive board, Chicago Boy Scouts, director, Sinai Congregation, vice-chairman, governing board St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital and president, Harvard Business School Club of Chicago. Gerson lives in Chicago with his third wife, Corrine Siegel, a renowned educator. They've been married seven years and have seven children.

Sharing Secret Opinions.......2001-10-19
I really loved the book--408 pages of interesting, fun and insightful secret opinions. I got great insights into the benefits of planning and taking charge of your life. Not too many men would help German prisoners to evacuate a sinking American LST at the risk of almost losing his own life. A great insight into such a high level education at Harvard Business School. I found some of his secrets, such as legalizing narcotics very insightful and why mustard bottles irrates him, being a great hot dog lover. All in all the book was great to read and I sure look forward to a sequel--hope that Mr. Gerson has more "Secret Opinion" to share.....

101 Reasons to Love the Yankees
ASIN: 0786410892 |
Book Description
When in 2000 the Baseball Writers Association of America elected the ever-durable Carlton Fisk to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, many fans quietly pointed to the Hall's omission of Fisk' greatest American League contemporary, Thurman Munson. And when in 2001 the writers honored Kirby Puckett, the Twins star forced to retire with glaucoma after a brilliant but brief 12-year career, the same fans began to raise their voices in support of Munson, another short-timer who was once the toast of his team's hometown. In a position that requires the strapping on of hot, awkward equipment and the torturous alternation of standing and squatting, most catchers struggle to maintain electrolytes, let alone a respectable batting average. It is, in fact, a position so demanding, that men deemed good ball-handlers or pitcher confidants might hang on in the big leagues for years despite their drag on a team's offensive production. Munson, like Fisk and National Leaguer Johnny Bench, was a tough-as-nails backstop, a Gold Glove winner, and the unquestioned leader of his team. Like Bench and Fisk, too, though to a lesser degree, Munson had home run power. But the Yankee captain was in, at least one respect, an even rarer breed of catcher-one who manages despite the physical and mental demands of his position to finish each year somewhere near the .300 mark. Munson, who ranked in the top 10 among A.L. hitters five of the nine full seasons he played, was widely considered one of his generation's great clutch hitters. When the star catcher died at age 32, he was still in his prime, and it seems clear to many that on August 2, 1979, misfortune denied Munson his place in Cooperstown. Outlived by his contemporaries, who went on to post more impressive career numbers, and now overshadowed by the accomplishments of catchers from the current batter-biased era, Munson's chances for recognition grow increasingly faint. But for all the praiseworthy things he did on the field in his short career, Thurman Munson accomplished as much in between the innings and games he labored through. And it might be his influence for which he's ultimately remembered. In this work, author Chris Devine pays special attention to Munson as teammate, friend, husband, and father.

Not the best book I've ever read..........2002-10-31
I need to first state that I am a HUGE Thurman Munson fan. I have almost every book written about him. I couldn't wait to read this book but after I finished I was pretty disappointed. There really is nothing new in this book. We know that Munson was a great player, that he loved his family, that he had a difficult relationship with his dad, etc. Devine seems to have taken the easy route in writing this book which is to say that he got most of his information from already printed sources. He doesn't seem to have spent a lot of time doing original research. For example: there are NO interviews of his own. He didn't speak to any teammates, players from other teams, much less any of his family. If you have the books written about Munson or the articles from newspapers or magazines then there is really no need for this book. On the other hand, if you want a one stop synopsis of all of these media, then this is a good book for you. Just don't expect to learn anything new.
Somebody call an editor.......2002-09-18
Wow - the worst-written baseball bio I've seen in a long time. I grew up a non-Yankee fan, but I always admired Munson. I thought he would be a ripe subject for examination, but Devine's writing just dulls the whole book. Not recommended.
Grade School Writing.......2002-04-25
I ordered this book before it was published and I jumped on it when it finally arrived at the house. After about an hour of reading I had to take a break from the book and I have never picked it up again. The writing was terrible, I felt like I was reading a book designed for sixth graders. The book has no style, it never draws you into the life of Thurman Munson. After the first chapter I had to wonder why I thought this guy was so great that I'd want to read his biography. It seems to me that someone with such a great life as Munson would be an easy target for a great book--it would almost write itself. But Devine took any and all life out of this great character. I'll keep the book only to add to my collection and it will gather much dust on that shelf.

I go to school with Chris Devine and not only is he a great writer, and Thurman Munson; A Baseball Biography a great book, but Chris is also divine in personality and in looks!

I go to school with Chris Devine, and not only is Chris a great writer and Thurmun Munson: A Baseball Biography, an awesome book, but Chris is also divine in personality and definitely in looks as well!

This book changed my life.......2001-11-29
In high school around 1985, I tried to argue with a Republican classmate that US bombers were targeting civilian neighborhoods in Libya. "No," he said, "You see, the A-rabs don't know any physics. They're firing antiaircraft missiles at ninety degrees, and their own bombs are falling back on them." The following year, when our government teacher announced that the Challenger had exploded, another classmate of mine said with a crooked smile and a faux-childlike tone, "Gee, Mr. Duffey, it's a good thing *you* weren't the teacher they chose to go into space!" I only began to understand these incidents--the naively credulous belief in government statements, the postemotional reaction to atrocities--when I read Mark Crispin Miller's essay on "The Hipness Unto Death." MCM exposes the vitiating effects of late Seventies and early Eighties media--the sadism of Jerry Lewis, the subtle thuggery of Bill Cosby, the crazed sensationalism of Dan Rather, the vacuity of Reagan's public face, and the ability of "Lettermanesque irony" to drain everything of meaning are among his themes. Miller is a dissident ironist, in the tradition of his sometime friend Christopher Hitchens and his avatars Michael Berube and Thomas Frank, but he is also a prophet: no one familiar with Boxed In was surprised when audiences began to treat the characters on Seinfeld as role-models, when Sam Donaldson became a Republican spokesman, or when Bill Maher smiled while pantomiming the attack on the World Trade Center. Fans should look at Miller's other books and his articles in The Nation, Extra!, and CONTEXT magazines.
brilliant, breathtaking analysis of tv shows and ads.......1998-09-22
The first 8 or so essays in this book constitute some of the greatest writing on TV and advertising that I have ever run into. Analysis of texts is often so freaking esoteric and bookish that there's no point in reading it unless you want to impress an english undergrad at a department meeting. However, everyone who has any ability for introspection will benefit from the essays in this book, which use the tools of text analysis to help understand american culture and the motivations behind the culture creators. Other than incredible essays about advertisting and TV news, there are also some pretty decent essays about technology and movies and some pretty mediocre essays about music. Notwithstanding that, this book is required reading for all smart Americans, and you really won't be able to read advertising until you've read the opening essay, Hipness until Death, which becomes more and more applicable with each abstraction put out by Sprite or Arizona Jeans. Thank you Mark Crispin Miller!
Brilliant and biting collections of essays on pop culture.......1998-06-22
"Boxed In" is a collection of essays on TV, Elvis, movies and the future. Miller's piercing critical analysis of the world of pop culture is no dry thesis. It contains hilariously colourful, laugh-out-loud, read-to-your-friends, genius (and often biting) observations of the media and the world we live in. There is a cunning essay on the TV game show "Family Feud" as well as a very shrewd essay on the Jerry Lewis telethons that are especially clever and funny. A must read.

A real-world handbook.......2007-06-18
Within minutes, this book and I were solving problems. The table of contents reads like a laundry-list of common Exchange configuration and management issues; each chapter takes a moment to explain the pieces of the puzzle, then provides step-by-step instructions for practical tasks. The conversational tone is frank and confident, conveying a sense of real-world experience.
An example: "One of the biggest complaints I hear about getting RPC over HTTP to work is that the instructions are not very good, missing, or just wrong. For that reason, I'm creating a step-by-step guide that includes the instructions I have found useful for successfully getting RPC over HTTP to work properly."
Sure enough, the instructions were direct and to-the-point, and the procedure worked flawlessly to do just what I wanted to do. This book is exactly what I was looking for.
Great book.......2007-05-03
Even after three years of using exchange 2003 I still sometimes use this book. I would recomend it to anybody who has to manage exchange servers.
Excellent Book for day to day Admins!.......2007-01-10
I started out with step by step Exchange instruction books and, although they were useful and helpful, I was eventually left wanting. Especially for best practices, day to day stuff, security, and disaster recovery. Then I stumbled on this book and haven't looked back. In a confident, friendly voice McBee guides you through some of the most complex subjects and practices related to Exchange, and when he's done you won't be left hanging. I see he's just released an updated version. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
Great resource for any Exchange Administrator.......2006-11-10
I have used this book for about a month now, and so far I have found it to be a very valuable resource. It does not spend a lot of time on migration strategies, so if this is what your are looking for you should find another book. Exchange Server 2003 24seven focuses on the day to day tasks any good Exchange Admin should be doing, plus some insight into how to do certain tasks that M$ doesnt tell you how to do. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to support any sized Exchange environment.
Some useful info but must wade through chatty kathy style.......2006-09-02
I need to learn Exchange Fast. Too many paragraphs seem to open or be sprinkled with dialog that doesn't pass on substantive information. For instance, "If you are like me, you are saying to yourself...'self..." or "One of the most discouraging things is for a user to call up and say they can't reach domain xyz." Multiply this by 300 and 30% of the book is fluff.
I just cringe at the waste of time and pages with this style. I don't want to know how my soul will feel about an issue: Just note the issue and the data. If I want clever, I'll turn on Chris Rock or Steve Martin. If I want emotional hand holding, I'll turn on "The View" or Lifetime TV. I am returning this book. It won't do as a reference because of all the fluff. Many books are categorized by their size, and perhaps this was his way of making a bigger book that would look like it held more info or, in some cases, the author is payed by the word count?
When I started reading, "Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora Edition" I was blown away by the economical useful information presented in orderly paragraphs, helpful bulleted lists - pure information transfer. If Mr. McBee wrote in that style, I could learn without fluff induced frustration.
Book Description
Time and Narrative builds on Paul Ricoeur's earlier analysis, in The Rule of Metaphor, of semantic innovation at the level of the sentence. Ricoeur here examines the creation of meaning at the textual level, with narrative rather than metaphor as the ruling concern.
Ricoeur finds a "healthy circle" between time and narrative: time is humanized to the extent that it portrays temporal experience. Ricoeur proposes a theoretical model of this circle using Augustine's theory of time and Aristotle's theory of plot and, further, develops an original thesis of the mimetic function of narrative. He concludes with a comprehensive survey and critique of modern discussions of historical knowledge, understanding, and writing from Aron and Mandelbaum in the late 1930s to the work of the Annales school and that of Anglophone philosophers of history of the 1960s and 1970s.
"This work, in my view, puts the whole problem of narrative, not to mention philosophy of history, on a new and higher plane of discussion."—Hayden White, History and Theory
"Superb. . . . A fine point of entrance into the work of one of the eminent thinkers of the present intellectual age."—Joseph R. Gusfield, Contemporary Sociology
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2005-06-14
Ricoeur, who died in 2005, had an obscure type of fame, but one that will grow exponentially as his ideas are understood more and more. This mind-blowing volume takes Augustine's and Aristotle's views on time and synthesizes them into a position on how narrative works. Great stuff.

Superb reading!.......2007-04-10
I am pleasantly surprised at what a marvelous read this book is! Altick provides a very thorough background on Victorian history, people, philosophy, economics, politics, religion, literature etc. which is not only highly informative but also fascinating. After carrying this book everywhere for a week and delighting at even having the opportunity to read two pages at a time, I found myself returning to Amazon.com to look for other books by the same author.
Altick not only knows the Victorian experience (and its development and changes throughout the 19th century), but he knows how to present it in a manner which is highly illuminating. Another plus is how, perhaps without meaning to, he provides a backdrop for socio-political-economic developments of the 20th century, which not only affected Great Britain, but spread across the Atlantic to the U.S. As a result, I am not only becoming much more knowledgeable about Victorian times and able to understand the context of the Victorian novels I have been reading, but I have become more aware of the philosophies, value systems and practices which have shaped western society today. This is one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read.
Top of the line!.......2005-08-02
I can not tell you how splendid this work is, I just am flabergasted! Some books are written and then some books are "written"! This book was "written"! Hands down I have to tell you this was a book that was "written" !
I am a professional critic so I have a few gripes. One the binding bent to easily when I threw the book against the wall. OK, so I have a problem with big words, the book uses big words when little words would suffice. Call me crazy but do not call me if you plan to read this p...I am told I will love the book and given time (and some time on the rack) I suppose I would, but at this point I will have to reserve judgement until I read the dang thang. Please do not hold your breath....Best book I have ever...Go read now!
Intelligent and Literature-Centered.......2001-12-09
I cannot imagine a better "companion" to Victorian literature than this nicely organized book. This is an invaluable guide to anyone who would like to situate their knowledge of Victorian prose and poetry within the era's social/historical zeitgeist. Malthus, dissenters, social reforms, sexuality, class consciousness -- all here. I have found myself returning to this book many times over the years. Kudos to Altick.
A lively and thorough introduction to the Victorian period.......2000-10-10
I highly recommned this introduction to the values and literature of Victorian Britain. Replete with lively anecdotes and thoughtful analyses, Altick's work makes for an entertaining read even as it educates those just beginning to tackle nineteenth century British history and literature.
Book Description
Can one learn linear algebra solely by solving problems? Paul Halmos thinks so, and you will too once you read this book. The Linear Algebra Problem Book is an ideal text for a course in linear algebra. It takes the student step by step from the basic axioms of a field through the notion of vector spaces, on to advanced concepts such as inner product spaces and normality. All of this occurs by way of a series of 164 problems, each with hints and, at the back of the book, full solutions. This book is a marvelous example of how to teach and learn mathematics by â~doingâ mathematics. It will work well for classes taught in small groups and can also be used for self-study. After working their way through the book, students will understand not only the theorems of linear algebra, but also some of the questions which were asked which enabled the theorems to be discovered in the first place. They will gain confidence in their problem solving abilities and be better prepared to understand more advanced courses. As the author explains, â~I donât think I understand a subject until I know the questions ⦠I wrote this book to organize those questions, problems, in my own mind.â Try this book with your students and they too will be able to organize and understand the questions of linear algebra.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good for second year graduate students.......2007-01-18
It is a good book for beginners but not as great for graduate students.
Great book!.......2006-02-23
I agree with the following reviewer in that Halmos' books are always entertaining and inviting! Fun to read, concise yet clear! The book contains most of the elementary yet important problems in an undergrad course with solutions in the back. It's very helpful working through all these problem because it will tremendous enhance your understanding of the subject. Also, if you want a hardcore problem oriented approach to linear algebra, check out Proskuryakov's Problems in Linear Algebra. Some of the problems in the book are Putnam like. Virtually any type of Putnam taste problems in Linear Algebra can be found in Proskuryakov. But this one, contrast to Halmos', is the least entertaining--that's why it is called HARDCORE PROBLEM APPROACH! You would be a great linear algebra problem solving machine working through both books!
Start out with one of the best.......2001-06-14
Halmos is one of the great mathematical expositors of the 20th Century, and his book "Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces" stands as the definitive introduction to the subject for budding mathematicians. This book, "Linear Algebra Problem Book", is perhaps best described as an engaging and semi-informal invitation and complement to that original work, which grew out of lectures given by the legendary John von Neumann. In contrast to typical treatments of linear algebra, "Finite Dimensional Vector Spaces" is abstract (introduces determinants through alternating forms), rigorous, concise, and demands a certain level of mathematical maturity. This book, "Linear Algebra" is exactly the opposite. Starting from very little assumed background, it all but gives away the store, written in plain language, anticipating students' questions and misconceptions, and leading them to a deeper understanding of mathematics through the Socratic method. This is not a problem book in the Schaum's outline sense; there is no drill or rote calculations. Every question is carefully chosen to illustrate a point or expose a potential misunderstanding in the student's knowledge or to exercise the student's intuition and ability to make connections. The answers are given as detailed explanations, integral to the exposition, which go far beyond merely answering the questions posed, raising deeper implications and questions. This is an excellent book for beginning students of higher mathematics, and a very user friendly guide to Halmos' classic text.
Clear, interesting, easy to follow........1999-04-30
I'm no mathematician but, I own a number of linear algebra and abstract algebra books and this book makes them all pale in comparison. I really enjoyed working through it. Maybe a bit pedantic for more advanced types but, if you want to get a handle on the concepts this is the book.

The 2-volume book is an updated, reorganized and considerably enlarged version of the previous edition of the Research Problem Book in Analysis (LNM 1043), a collection familiar to many analysts, that has sparked off much research. This new edition, created in a joint effort by a large team of analysts, is, like its predecessor, a collection of unsolved problems of modern analysis designed as informally written mini-articles, each containing not only a statement of a problem but also historical and methodological comments, motivation, conjectures and discussion of possible connections, of plausible approaches as well as a list of references. There are now 342 of these mini- articles, almost twice as many as in the previous edition, despite the fact that a good deal of them have been solved!
