Book Description
A story of survival and success, tragedy and triumph, striving and strength, and perseverance and perfection. It is a moving story of a young man?s journey through an urban wilderness and the despair of a crime ridden ghetto to reach the upper levels of societal acceptance. He dealt with the decay, the deception and bedeviling poverty of urban life, not to mention the unadulterated violence and gang-infested streets. Many like him lost their way. They were drowned by the high waves of negativity that sank their ship. He, however, steadied his ship and stayed master of his own destiny?reaching the pinnacle of professional and personal success.
Book Description
“Much of what we know about Satchel Paige . . . is undoubtedly true, some of it is probably apocryphal, all of it contributed to his legend as a ballplayer and one-of-a-kind personality.”
-- From the foreword by Bob Costas
Satchel Paige’s witty quips and savvy observations -- on everything from health to wealth, from race relations to baseball-- are an enduring part of American mythology. At long last, a definitive collection of quotes, stories (from Willie Mays, Joe DiMaggio, and many others), vintage newspaper articles, photos, and memorabilia celebrates the inimitable magic of Leroy “Satchel” Paige.

Fun and poignant!.......2003-07-17
One cannot help but be moved by this little book of various sayings of and articles about Satchel Paige. Yet this is one of the most delightful reads I have experienced in quite a while. David Sterry and Arielle Eckstut have put together a collection of witicisms and rare articles that will delight the baseball fan and history buff.
Beautifully illustrated with vintage photographs and pictures, this book is a gem. A reader will learn about the spirit of a man who looked Jim Crow in the face and won!
A jewel, just like Satchel.......2001-08-30
Satchel Paige. Just saying the name brings to mind a personality as vibrant and singular as any seen in the world of baseball. This short, effective book presents a glimpse into the truly marvelous wit and wisdom of the pitcher who seemed terminally young, throwing baseballs with purpose and precision into his 60s. A pitcher who once struck out 24 batters in one game. A player many claim was the ultimate master of the pitched ball. A competitor with constant chatter and quips. A man who was relegated to second-class citizenship because he was African-American, yet with whom all the white teams of the 1930s wanted to play against in the barn-storming games because he was such a draw. Take a peak at this book and you'll glean a new insight into the man who became a legend. The authors have captured the essence of Satchel via quotes about and by Paige, lots of photographs, stats, stories, and memorabilia all wrapped in a wildly successful graphic design.
I learned so much from this book!.......2001-06-10
I'm not much of a baseball fan, and Satchel Paige has always just been a name to me, but a friend showed me this book and I couldn't resist reading it. I do like history, philosophy, and stories about people with integrity who overcome obstacles to do what they love and live by their own standards, and Satchel Sez pleased me on all of those levels. For those of you who are as uninformed as I was before I read this book, Leroy "Satchel" Paige started out with a job carrying suitcases at the age of seven and went on to become the greatest pitcher baseball has ever known, with stats that far outshine the records set by white players who were allowed careers in the big leagues. Satchel played in the Negro Leagues for almost his entire career - he spent a few years in the Major Leagues. He was eventually named the oldest rookie when he was in his sixties. "Age is a question of mind over matter," he said. "If you don't mind, it don't matter." The book is colorful, fun, and easy to read, pairing quotes and anecdotes by and about Satchel with lots of photographs of the man himself. Satchel's humor and easy-going nature are captured here, but at the same time the book portrays his grace and dignity, a side of him that has often been overlooked due to racial stereotypes. Satchel has lots of advice to give on everything from baseball to aging to women to stomach trouble. Some examples are: "Slow down, you last longer," "Be satisfied in your own world," and "Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Home plate don't move." He also offers inspiration, such as, "You have to believe in yourself. When you believe, you do." One of my favorite quotes could be applied to the racism he faced: "It's not what you don't know that hurts you. It's what you know that just ain't so." I'm also impressed by Satchel's goodwill. For sure, he trash-talked and was never modest about his genius, but he was generous at the same time. Once he didn't show up to the Negro League equivalent of an All-Star game because the owners of the teams refused to donated all of the proceeds to returning wounded GIs. When he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame (Negro League players were supposed to be recognized separately), he said, "There were many Satchels." I am simultaneously impressed, informed, and inspired by Satchel Sez, and I would recommend it to anyone.

My kind of Creepy Book.......2006-02-21
I loved "Something in the Blood". The book took a popular subject, vampires, and let us look at people who obsess about the subject. In my opinion, this is just as fascinating as looking at the Star Trek people or Renassaince Fair people. The book is very interesting study in modern sociology.
One character named "Debbie" reminded me of a character named Serelae from the City of Hashan in Achaea. Both caracters are dark individuals who want to appear mysterious to the outside world, but probably are fairly normal people in real life.

Don't Buy It.......2005-10-19
I was in this book. I was totally misrepresented and misquoted. I don't know how they could have done such a poor job of writing from the tapes of my interview! They were supposed to also change the names before publication, and no names were changed in my chapter, leading to a lot of problems! A monkey could have written this book with better forethought and tact. Greiser and Guinn should've been SUED!
The Book Tells It ALL! Weirdos and Losers Please Apply!.......2005-03-09
Wear black, some heavy eyeliner, pierce a few places, a couple of tatoo's, droop and drag your depressing ass around....yes, you are a Vampire! As this book points out, a bunch of poorly functioning, delusional losers. Any questions? Read some of these reviews! HAHAHAHHA!
Very poorly researched as well as limited in field........2004-03-21
I was greatly disapointed by this book. I felt it read more like a gothic diary. The research was one sided, highly opinionated and very critical of those interviewed. There could have been ( should have been ) more research into actual living vampire lifestylers, instead of those who were protrayed as freaks, loosers and tragic cases. The authors could have taken a few lessons from J. G. Melton or Martin V. Riccardo.Hopefully someday there will arrive in the literary field one such book that actally shows all sides of vampires.
Irresponsible IMHO.......2002-10-17
There are parts where the author feels that so long as he doesn't name actual names, he can lie and say whatever he wants about groups/people, based on negative hearsay from somebody he interviewed. He could easily have taken a little effort to contact the parties in question to at least verify whether was being said about those parties was accurate -- or even had any basis in truth at all -- or not, before writing it down. If that is the fellow's methods of research, interviewing or investigation, I advise him to not quit his day job. I highly recommend ignoring this book. Go out and rent a movie or something.

A wonderful insight.......2003-09-04
In his autobiography Karpov details everything from his early childhood to his rivalries with Korchnoi and Kasparov. The fluency of the book, however, is flawed and there is a virtual chasm between his childhood and rest-of-life. That said, I think this is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. Karpov tells about his spiritual approach to the game, his gentle and kind personality, and most importantly, his match with Korchnoi.
To be honest, I think that the description of the match with Korchnoi (actually all their matches) is one of the best passages in a book I've read yet. The absolutely intense labor, momentum of the match, and conspiracies surrounding all of his games are fascinating and intriguing. If you are going to buy a book on Karpov or any autobiography, but this one.
Near Masterpiece.......2002-04-07
The first half of this book is startlingly well written, literary, and even sometimes quite humorous, as when Karpov recounts the story about his mother checking up on him after he had been forbidden to think about chess. As the book nears the present, however, Karpov loses the thread of his own story and begins to wander (some would put it stronger than that) in his analysis of Kasparov and their bitter rivalry. One wishes, therefore, that Karpov had waited til he was well into his 50's before attempting the sort thing he tries here; because his childhood is recalled with vivid insight and the point of view that emerges is astonishing: he just happened to find himself World Champion one day! On the other hand, I can easily imagine chess players not liking this book at all since it has no chess games in it; but that really doesn't matter if one is fascinated by the subject (as I am). I only mention the fact to warn people who might be expecting something other than what they will find here: an autobiography. That said, this is a very good book from the former World Champion which ends with him hopefully predicting his future re-claiming of the world title (the book came out in 1990). You can read that last part any way you like or ignore it, but there it is: Karpov is a romantic who had to somehow make his way through the demi-human universe of Soviet Chess. A number of fans will undoubtedly disagree with this assessment, but one can tell when someone is lying about the unacceptable deeds of their past: Karpov's memoir is, therefore, touching at times, as his telling of the events surrounding the aborted match with Fischer amply demonstrates.... I recomend this book to anyone who has a heart, and, wants to know more about the history of the royal game in our times.

Good Software Book, Bad Business Process Change Book.......2007-07-15
This book is geared too much towards IT process changes and can never escape its software base of knowledge to address general business process change in a meaningful way. It was required reading for a business process improvement class and I never went beyond the required reading because it just wasn't useful. This might be useful for an IT project lead but anyone else would be better served by any one of the many books on Toyota, Six Sigma, or Lean.
Good seller........2007-04-03
It came in on time and in the condition stated. Would buy from this seller again.
Very good book from Paul Harmon.......2007-03-09
This is a very good book. I am a Data Warehouse / Business Analysis Architect and one of the keys to my profession is maximizing technology in order to solve business problems. Harmon writes about how IT is a key enabler of BPM.
Harmon really does a good job of documenting the importance of BPM and process redesign, rather than wholesale reengineering of processes through the implementation of ERP systems. Harmon writes about how business processes can be considered assets of a corporation. This is important. Another key thread in the book is that all processes in an organization should map back to the value propositions of the company and therefore map directly to strategic goals.
Mapping all processes to the value propositions of the company is important to ensure that nothing the company does is done solely for the sake of the institution, but maps to a business goal.
Business Process Change.......2006-12-29
This book was recommended by several of my lean consulting friends, who specialize in agile project management, as an excellent source for documenting and analyzing process workflows in complex environments. I agree, this book is a must read for people tasked with redesigning informational workflows in service systems. I have read it twice and continue to learn new ways to analyze business processes.
This book needs update.......2006-07-28
When I purchased the book early 2003 I agreed with most of the reviews.
However, having it read again. It really shows that a lot of stuff has been outdated and certainly requires updating.
Especially on the new trends like Six Sigma, compliance and innovative technology solutions.
Book Description
Spanning the years from c. 5000 B.C. to the early centuries A.D., the Nile Valley civilization was one of the earliest created by humankind. It remains one of the most fascinating and influential. This handy yet encyclopedic reference work offers a comprehensive overview of ancient Egyptian history, from Predynastic times to the Old and New Kingdoms to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Accessible, authoritative, and clearly organized, the Handbook to Life in Ancient Egypt affords an engaging look at a culture whose art, architecture, religion, and medicine came to form the basis of Western Civilization. The thematically arranged chapters allow readers easy access to several key topics, including historical background, geography, government, religion, funerary customs, architecture, literature, the military, the economy, and everyday life. Drawing on written sources dating from c. 3100 B.C. and such widespread archaeological evidence as monuments, artifacts, inscriptions, and preserved human remains, noted Egyptologist Rosalie David covers everything from the Sun Cult and the pyramids to the arrival and dispersal of Christianity. Her useful Handbook also features: * 112 maps, photographs, and original line drawings * suggestions for further reading at the conclusion of each chapter * a chronological table of over five millennia of Egyptian history * an appendix listing museums with Egyptian collections * a timely and extensive overall bibliography as well as a thorough index Combining archaeological and historical sources, this Handbook provides all the essential data required by anyone interested in Egyptian history, archaeology, religion, or culture.

Excellent Book.......2006-08-09
The book is very thorough in the information it provides. Pretty much self explanatory.
Plenty of info.......2005-07-21
This book gives a good overview of what we know about the Ancient Egyptian culture. This was a book I had to purchase for a class on the subject and I found it quite interesting.
Great survey!.......2004-09-24
This book basically follows the same format for the "Handbook to life in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome" books of Adkins and Adkins. That's a good thing, since I enjoyed those books.
I have significant interest in Ancient Egypt but know very little about it. Most texts simply concentrate on the pyramids and other monumental architecture. This text gives you a much more balanced introduction and includes sections on history, religion, the military, geography, trade and economy, and daily life. It's organized very well. It has plenty of pictures, illustrations, chronologies, etc. There is a suggested bibliography at the end of each section to encourage research in greater depth.
Overall this is a very affordable and user friendly survey of Ancient Egypt that will service students as well as adults with no prior background to the subject.
Helpful Reference or Beginner's Guide.......2004-03-07
HANDBOOK TO LIFE IN ANCIENT EGYPT is a very helpful reference and the revised edition gives the most up-to-date information. It really is more like an encyclopedia. It is not necessary to be read cover to cover as such, although the reader can do so. It is divided up into 12 chapters covering 12 different topics. Some of the information, if pertinent, overlaps in the chapters, but is put there for completeness. The chapters are: 1 - Egyptology, Archaeology and Scientific Mummy Studies in Egypt; 2 - Historical Background; 3-Geography of Ancient Egypt; 4 - Society and Government; 5 - Religion of the Living; 6-- Funerary Beliefs and Customs; 7 - Architecture and Building; 8-- Written Evidence; 9-- The Army and Navy; 10 -- Foreign Trade and Transport; 11 - Economy and Industry; and 12 -- Everyday Life. There are also a Chronological Table, a List of Museums with Egyptian Collections, a Bibliography and an Index included.
This is a helpful reference for anyone and is especially useful to the person just beginning to learn about Ancient Egypt.
Kemet.org Book Review Posted!.......2001-04-23
A wonderful book to replace the very outdated and patently racist "Life in Ancient Egypt" by Erman, David's coffee-table book about the worldview and culture of the ancient Egyptians is quite nice. Be aware of a tendency to read certain portions of Egyptian life as "coming from an outside source" (an oblique reference to the outdated "Dynastic Race Theory" that, sadly, still seems to be held to by some British archaeologists). Otherwise factual, useful, and filled with an excellent bibliography.

A new chapter on Egyptology describes the history of the field, the results of the latest excavations, and the techniques involved in new scientific studies, such as DNA analysis and the tracing of disease patterns. This newly revised edition takes into account the discoveries of the last few years that have led Egyptologists to change their perspective on some aspects of life in ancient Egypt, including a reevaluation of the purpose and functions of the Egyptian temples, the role of the Great Royal Wife, and the possible date and nature of the Biblical Exodus.
Book Description
ROOTS OF THE WESTERN TRADITION is a brief chronological survey that covers the Ancient world in three parts: Prehistoric Europe and Ancient Near East; Ancient Greece; and Ancient Rome. Succinct enough to be used with supplements, the coverage is carefully balanced between narrative and interpretation, highlighting historians varying viewpoints on certain issues.

A well written 200+ page overview.......2005-05-12
This book is a survey of the main themes in ancient history. It is not, and obviously is not meant to be, a detailed history. It provides a good overview for the casual reader, and a basic foundation for those wanting to learn more. I disagree with the reviews that state the book is inaccurate or a waste of time.
This review is of the 3rd edition.......2002-07-08
...The 3rd edition is a very, very good summary of the key contributions made to Western Civilization by the various ancient civilizations, with emphasis on the Greeks and Romans, but also covers the Mesopotamian, Egyption, and Persian civilizations.
This edition has 18 illustrations and 14 maps to augment the text, and I have found it very useful and informative, and recommend it to people as a good basic text. I also like the list of suggested additional readings.
All in all, a very good book. Perhaps the other, more recent editions have been altered too much. If so, look for this one.
Save yourself 40 bucks!!.......2002-05-08
I am an avid reader/student of history. This book is horrible! Hollister's work reads more like a book of fiction than an accurate account of hisorical facts. His arguements are not based on any documentation, citation, or anything else. His accounts of history seem to be based soley on his opinion. If I had paid [money] for this book I would have been thoroughly disappointed but at [the price], I feel ripped off! This book is a very, very, very quick gloss over of world history. If you are considering using this book for teaching purposes... DO NOT! Your students deserve more.
A Horrible Source, A Poor Textbook.......1999-09-24
AVOID THIS BOOK. The history of the Ancient Middle East, Greece and Rome collectively form the bedrock of western culture, setting standards in politics, philosophy, literature, art, architecture and religion that have shaped modern Europe. Indeed, one might say with a great deal of confidence that it was the collective influence of Medieval chaos and ancient order that propelled Europe into the modern age after the Renaissance. Hollister, a strong Medievalist, sees this significant period as an era of lesser importance than the Middle Ages, demanding less coverage, less discussion, less analysis. Where he might be an expert in medieval history, it is clear he is no authority here, regurgitating traditional and completely out-of-date opinions of the ancient world, very scantily covering Greco-Roman achievements and creating an overall sense of entropy undermining this textbook. Though former reviewers claim that this is neccesary to avoid "overwhelming students", I believe that an ugly, unillustrated book simplifying significant matters and sometimes simply presenting wrong information should be AVOIDED at all cost. I would recommend "A History of the Ancient World", by two noted Dutch historians, as an alternative. AVOID THIS TEXTBOOK!
Harmoniously balanced summary and references to more detaile.......1999-06-09
Creative attempt to overcome overwhelming students with too much information. In avoiding the encylopedic approach, Hollister offers the broad outlines of Ancient History and suggests the most authoritative sources for further study of Ancient World topics. This enables the student to pursue topics which are of further interest to him. It is important to know that the late Professor Hollister was not only an outstanding scholar, the foremost authority on the Norman Conquest but a very popular and entertaining lecturer. He had the ability to animate his lectures with wit, humour and in his course in the Middle Ages was known to chant monastic music of St. Gregory.

Magic Science.......2006-06-30
This book is exactly what I wanted. It gives step-by-step instructions for quick "magic" science activities. The explanations are clear and concise. The table of contents categorizes the activities so that I can easily identify those that correlate with the objectives I teach. I can see using these activities as introductions to units or as simple "experiments" for my class experts.
