Mantle - The Definitive Story of Mickey Mantle
ASIN: 0440212030
Release Date: 1992-03-02 |
Book Description
Mickey Mantle, the hayseed kid from Spavinaw, Oklahoma, was in his sixth year with the Yankees. He was already America's homerun king. He was about to become a national hero. 1956 would be a record-breaking season: the golden summer fans would remember forever. Now Mickey Mantle brings it all back just the way it happened--spectacular playing on field, crazy hijinks with Whitey Ford and Billy Martin off. There never was a time like it before in baseball. There never will be again. It was magic.

hanging out with mick.......2003-07-15
I enjoyed this causually written account of Mickey Mantles' summer of 1956. It's like sitting on the front porch with Mick as he tells you the events and feelings of what he and the yankees experinced that year,on and off the field.and he spares you his war stories by leaving it at "we went out and partied that night". He talks about his triple crown, his homerun race agianst Babe Ruth(also in the back is a season schedule of dates,hr's,pitchers faced, site, opponents, and runners on base).Mick also discusses the 1956 world series agianst the dodgers and descibes the perfect game by don larsen. Also there are game and team photos. i think you will enjoy micks account of his favorite year.
Best Book I ever read, and I am not even a Yankees fan!.......2003-02-12
When I read this book I could not put it down. The detail of the 1956 season that Mickey goes into is unmatched because the words come right from the source, MICKEY! I think you must be a baseball fan to enjoy this book, but you definitely don't have to be a Yankee fan. I strongly dislike Steinbrenner's Yankees, but this is before he ruined the organization. Who doesn't have a small spot in their heart for the oldtime Yanks? This book tells you about the relationships between Mickey and Billy Martin as well as Whitey Ford, straight from Mickey's mouth!! Mickey hired the great Phil Pepe to help edit his book, and Pepe's editing always makes the reading just keep flowing. Outstanding read, and I recommend it to any baseball fan!
My favorite book 2000.......2001-01-08
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. Not necessarily the best book ever written, but the best book I have ever read. It is my favorite book because it is about my favorite subject, baseball and of course the New York Yankees. Someone who does not like baseball or the New York Yankees as much as me would probably not like the book as much as me. But for a real baseball fan, it is a must read. The `50s were a great time for baseball, and the Yankees, and this book documents one of those spectacular seasons. To keep interested in this book, you must be a baseball fan, and at least like the Yankees in order for the book to be a good read. I say this because the Yankees are so good, that a lot of people despise them because they are so outrageously good. Either way I loved the book, it informed me on a time of baseball when I was not around to witness it, and now after reading the book, I feel I lived it. I felt like I was there, I watched Mickey win the Triple Crown, I watched the Yankees win the World Series. I was there. This was a great book, and I would recommend it to anyone with a heart of baseball, such as I do.

Humorous, informative, thought-provoking, entertaining.......2003-04-03
Those are the words I would use to describe this little gem of a book. I received this as a birthday gift (along with a DVD of the Criterion Edition Seven Samurai, I might add). At first, I just kind of went, 'Oh, a quiz book.' Boy, was I wrong. I had a blast reading this. More than anything, the book is informative. I had fun answering the questions I knew ('What is Rosebud?' Duh.), but the ones I didn't know turned out to be a treasure-trove of information on these movies. Really, really fun book. Two thumbs up!
Think you know film history?.......2002-09-17
Despite the fact that I don't fully approve of the american film institute's choices for the 100 greatest american films, I am a huge fan of a great deal of these films: sunset boulevard, taxi driver, the wizard of oz, gone with the wind, citizen kane, et al. As a film buff and amateur film historian, I felt I knew a great deal about these projects and their histories. Yet, to my amazement, Mr. Raush's book consistently brought new facts to light. While I'm not really much of a fan of quiz books, I liked this book immensely. In fact, the title is kind of misleading since its really more of film history book than anything else. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it an able companion to Roger Ebert's The Great Films book. I would heartily recommend either of these books to anyone interested in movies and movie makers.

A warm, caring journey through positive self imaging.......2001-10-26
MAKING PEACE is an excellent presentation of a complex and difficult subject. Dr. Hawks manages to dig deep into the personal and societal issues surrounding body image and self esteem through various examples, explanations, scriptures and illustrations.
MAKING PEACE is set within an anything but 'typical' university health class. The format is easy to read and logically laid out to help the reader progress thoroughly through each topic. Whether the reader is looking for spiritual support or personal growth, this book is a real treasure!
University professors beware!!!! Dr. Hawk's humorous and tender examples of classroom instruction sets a new standard in higher education.
A Must Read.......2001-09-11
Anyone who reads this book can't help but glean something positive from it whether they are trying to help themself, someone else, or just gain a better understanding of self-esteem and/or body image. Hawks is right on target in terms of what self-esteem is, where it comes from, external and internal influences, and how it is developed. His writing style is simple yet thought provoking and uses humor appropriately. He incorporates analogies, paradigms, metaphors, and real life experiences masterfully. His message is couched within gospel principles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From believer to non-believer, however, there is something for everyone in this book. It's a wonderful addition to my library.
First really helpfull book I've read.......2001-08-15
I am not one to normally read self help-type books, but this book is a significant contribution to the literature of self esteem and body image. If you have struggled with problems over weight or other physical problems, this book is for you. Hawks writes with a warm, engaging style. He takes a detailed look at body image with an enjoyable combination of wit and insight. Hawks, a health science professor, is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is a nationally recognized expert in the field of spiritual health. He has spent years studying, and publishing, on the effect of spiritually on health and this book offers some profound insights on the topic. I found the book easy to read, and many chapters left me thinking deeply about things that have affected me my entire life (like my weight). I highly recommend this book.

The BEST book in Pool & Billiards!.......2001-07-06
I just learned about this NEW publication, which is a revision of the one I read "Byrne's Standard Book of Pool and Billiards", Copyright © 1987, 1978 by the same author Robert Byrne. I have read just about every book on this subject, and there is no better book than this one! In fact, I recommend all of Robert Byrne's Pool & Billiards books and videos. He is an accomplished player, teacher and author.
I have no doubts that this book will meet and exceeds everyone's expectations on the subject!
The BEST book in Pool & Billiards!.......1999-11-07
I have read just about every book on this subject, there is no better book than this one! In fact, I recommend all of Robert Byrne's Pool & Billiards books and videos. He is an accomplished player, teacher and author.
This book will meet and exceeds everyones expectations on the subject!
Excellent information on pool and billiards........1998-07-29
Outstanding information on basic and advanced technique. It tells you about draw and follow shots, and also english. It also gives you information on straight pool, eight-ball, and many other pool games. This is in my opinion, the only book on pool and billiards you will ever need. Robert Byrne has really outdone himself by creating this masterpiece. This book should be on the shelves of every pool and billiards player. This is by far the best book on pool and billiards ever written.
Went from running 1 rack of 10 to 5 of 10!.......1998-07-26
I had been playing pool for approximately 10 years before i read this book, 3 of the 10 years were in "a" leagues and competitive nine and eight ball tournaments. before i read this book, i was able to run one rack out of every ten, after reading this book my game improved 500 percent. i was able to consistently run 5 racks out of every 10. the book has very explicit instructions and absolutely superb illustrations and examples of several methods of setting up shots. i expecially liked the procedure for running a table, it has some very good advice and if anyone follows it and can shoot just a little bit they will be able to run racks. i can't say enough about the benefits this book has had for my game. in my opinion robert byrnes, is the best teacher of the game of pool bar none! i read this book in about eight hours. it's a page turner if you want to improve your game or even are thinking about learning how to play the game, this is the book for ! you.
If you only buy one Billiards book in your life, this is it........1998-06-11
I've played pool most of my adult(and teenage) life. I've spent time on several tours and am always looking to learn something new. Byrne covers an amazing array of pool and billiard situations and does an outstanding job of diagraming and explaining the physics involved(Robert would insist that I give credit to Bob Jewett for this). If you think there's nothing in this book that's new to you you're most likely mistaken. Byrne's other books are outstanding as well. By the way, Bob...you've got the eight and one going to 7, bet high.:-)
Book Description
With the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft latest and most reliable corporate desktop operating system now provides better protection against viruses, worms, and malicious hackers. SP2 includes Windows Firewall, Pop-up Blocker for Internet Explorer, and the new Windows Security Center. But it still comes without a single page of printed instructions. This superbly written guide fills the gap. Coauthored by David Pogue, New York Times technology columnist and Missing Manuals creator, Windows XP Pro: The Missing Manual uses wit, technical insight, and scrupulous objectivity to light the way for first-time and intermediate network and standalone PC users. In fact, this jargon-free book explains XP's features so clearly revealing which work well and which don't that it should have been in the box in the first place. The book reveals which features work well and which don't, such as the Remote Desktop software that enables people to connect to the office from home, the encryption file system that protects sensitive information, and the Windows Messenger that enables real-time text, voice and video communication. Contents include:
-
Getting started. The book's early chapters cover using menus, finding lost files, reducing window clutter, and taming the new, multi-column Start menu.
-
Mastering the network. Special chapters help you navigate the corporate network, dial in from the road, and even set up your own small-office (peer-to-peer) network, step by step.
-
Understanding security. User accounts, file encryption, and the NTFS file system keep your private files private, while still offering network access to coworkers you specify.
-
Flying the Net. This book demystifies Outlook Express 6 for email, Internet Explorer 6 for Web browsing, and the new Windows Messenger for voice, chat, and video conferencing.
Windows XP Pro: The Missing Manual isn't for system administrators or OS theory geeks; it's for the novice or budding power user who wants to master the machine and get down to work. Yet, anyone who uses XP Pro (including hardcore techies) will find this new system much easier-- and more fun--to digest with this new Missing Manual.
Customer Reviews:
met my expectations.......2007-09-04
Worth the money. For the casual user seeking to become a power user. You can find all this info on the net but not this concise and well laid out. Anything not in this book you can find on the net as well.
Average User.......2005-09-13
After a few minutes of reading and in front of the PC, I was able to understand many of the new features in XP Pro. This book should have been included with the software. I considered myself as a fairly competent PC user, but the book unlocked all the items that you cannot find using the "Help" function in XP Pro. At least it seems that way to me! I highly recommend this purchase for ALL PC users.
He's Right, It Should Have Been In the Box.......2005-01-24
The title is right! This is the book that should have been included in the basic box with XP Pro. It is set at just the right level for the average user trying to come up to speed on a new operating system. While the basic user interface is more or less the same as the previous windows operating systems, the underlying code structure is based on NT rather than the older DOS/Windows.
This book isn't for system administrators or advanced readers. It's aimed at the average user who wants to master the machine well enough to get down to work or to look up something without having to call for support. It is basically crystal-clear, jargon-free (well, computers are still the subject, how about nearly jargon-free).
This edition is up to date to include Service Pack 2, which changed a number of screens and philosophies in the security area.
connecting to the Internet.......2005-01-19
The very latest from David Pogue's eponymous publishing house [and O'Reilly]. The book goes into myriad useful tips on best using Microsoft's XP Professional. A very stable operating system, unlike some earlier efforts by Microsoft. Replete with attractive consumer level utilities. The book does go into system type aids, like showing the full power of the start menu, taskbar and control panel. All to the good. But somewhat prosaic.
I suspect what is more germane to most users are things like getting onto the Internet and all that that implies. The authors go into explaining how to get the most out of Internet Explorer. And setting up your email and doing instant messaging. For many of us, browsing and email will take up much of our usage, with chat perhaps a close third. The reality is that the computer's power is often as a connection to the greater world. Which is why though these chapters are only a fraction of the book, you may want to head here first and read slowly. Understanding them may be the most productive part of the book for you.
MISSING MANUEL MISSED.......2004-08-13
I expected more from this book since the title implies more information that has not been available. I didn't see anything in the book that was new.
It is not a bad manuel but there are several books that provide the same information. Perhaps, the problem with the book is the title because it leads one to think it will include more than it actually delivers.
If you do not have a good reference book on Windows XP Professional, you would not go wrong with this book.
Book Description
From the chief White House correspondent for U.S. News World Report, a fascinating and unique look at our presidents' retreats, hideaways, and homes n Air Force One, Kenneth T. Walsh looked at presidential history from the unusual and illuminating vantage point of the presidents' planes. Now he focuses on the various retreats where our commanders-in-chief have gone to escape the hustle and bustle of Washington, chronicling the important decisions that were made and the historic events that have occurred at them. Moreover, he describes what these sites reveal about the characters of the presidents and the times in which they lived.
Customer Reviews:
Presidents (even the worse ones) are Human Too.......2005-11-16
This book, written by Kenneth Walsh, author of Air Force One is every bit as interesting. It brings out the human side of the various holders of the office of the President of the United States. Unlike his previous book, this one goes all the way back to George Washington (who never flew on Air Force One).
No matter what your opinion is of the various presidents, this book shows that from the very beginning, the stresses of the office are such that each needs a "personal place" to get away. Most of the presidents have, to some extent been criticized for their numerous "vacations" or "holidays" away from the official office to their homes or private spots. This book illustrates that, for many of these executives, the only time that they really had to foment their plans for handling the decisions of their office was when they were out of the grind of their daily duties in the White House (or, for Washington, the President's home in Philadelphia).
I feel that this is an excellent book (just like Air Force One) for illustrating the personal side and the real working side of the office of the President
A Camp David "veteran" reports.......2005-09-01
Having served at Camp David from 1975 to 1977 as the Commanding Officer of the Marine Security Company, I was extremely interested in what Mr. Walsh had to write about the official "Presidential Retreat"....I was reminded of the day when a much younger Richard Cheney (then Chief of Staff to President Ford) and his wife Lynn got stuck in heavy snow as they were driving to the camp in a VW Beetle...the Sgt. of the Guard and I went to their aid in a jeep and got then safely to Camp David!...President Carter loved playing softball and would occasionally form some of his Secret Service agents and pilots into a team and play the Marines...if I recall correctly, the Leathernecks usually managed to come out on top!...anyway, Mr. Walsh's research certainly paid off as he is right on target in describing the Naval Support Facility, Thurmont, Maryland....for someone interested in a combination of American history and presidential politics. this book is a must.
Interesting inside information.......2005-08-06
Everyone needs a place to "get away from it all." While presidents are never free from the responsibilities of their office, especially with modern technology, each president has a place to get away as much as possible, and this book tells us about them.
It is interesting to read about how they chose their get-aways, and what they do while they're at their favorite places. I learned more about the physical layout and multiple projects going on at Prairie Chapel Ranch (current President Bush's favorite get-away), and Camp David, a weekend retreat of presidents since Franklin Roosevelt.
"From Mount Vernon to Crawford" is an informative, fun, and easy read.
Presidents at Play.......2005-05-17
Walsh focuses on presidents at leisure, how their retreats from the White House reflect their presidencies. He doesn't treat all presidents, just the best-known early ones, then all from FDR on. The earlier benefit from the best recent scholarship, like Pinsker's of the Soldiers' Home cottage where Lincoln spent a quarter of his presidency. Where White House correspondent Walsh really shines, however, is with the modern presidents he or his contacts covered, especially from LBJ on: great detail! The special glimpse of Camp David is especially insightful. It's as close to an inside view as you can find.
Great History Without Cynicism.......2005-05-11
One of the few great teachers I had in college made history come to life with timely anectodes. Ken Walsh provides rich and fascinating lessons about American presidents with great stories that are both fun to read and amazingly revealing about the men who have been our presidents.
He presents us with an easy read that is, thankfully, devoid of the cynicism that permeates today's journalism. And he does so without fawning over any of his subjects.
His treatment, for example, of Richard Nixon's western White House in San Clemente helps us understand the crazed complexity that was Nixon. Or the way he describes Gerald Ford's skiing vacations in Vail with photographers only interested in capturing the inevitable spills in the snow, shows the impossibility of being both presidennt and 'normal.'
Or his contrast between two contemporary presidents returning to their land -- Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush -- demonstrates ultimately the values of both men.
This is a book worth reading, worth sharing, worth giving to friends and family.

A Treasure Chest.......2001-07-20
This is a classic. Every serious historian of African Americans needs to have this book. I am a descendant of these people and much of what is in the book confirmed what I have been told since I was a boy. Thanks to those tireless warriors who coompleted this work for without them, it would have remained hidden away.
This account of a people dedicated to freedom is a must read.
Insider's Perspective.......2000-06-16
As a descendant of Florida's Apalachicola Indians removed to Texas in 1834, I know the Black Seminole as my kin. Porter's narrative parallels our oral tradition and enhances it with photos and maps. Facts presented are well researched and documented with scholarly precision. Historic accuracy is near flawless. Language of the text is readable and the style captivating. No dry history here! Porter brings this forgotten segment of Florida's mixed blood Seminoles to life in seventeen easy chapters. Like a piece of tender, seasoned vinson, it leaves the reader filled but wanting more. No worse injustice could be done to Professor Porter that compare The Black Seminoles to another text. The power of the Porter pen has no peer. Without reservation, Porter's text is a unique gift to all of us. sixwomen@nettally.com
