An excellent history of what life was like in the 1930's.......1999-06-01

T found this book readable and informable. I read it to find out what life was like on the prairies during the depression. The book painted an accurate and vivid account. I loved the discriptions of the grasshopper plagues. I appreciated the account of life in the relief camps. It is very difficult to get such information. I would like to read more books by this author.

Consumption Intensified examines how self-identified middle class Brazilians in SÃ£o Paulo redefined their class during Brazil’s economic crisis of 1981–1994. With inflation soaring to an astounding 2700 percent, their consumption practices intensified, not only in relation to the national crisis but also to the expanding global consumer culture. Drawing on her observations of everyday practices and on representations of the middle class in popular culture, anthropologist Maureen O’Dougherty explores both the logic and incoherence of middle- to upper-middle-class Brazilian life.
With the supports of middle-class living threatenedâjob security, quality education, home ownership, savings, ease of consumptionâthe means and meaning of âmiddle classâ were thrown into question. The sector thus redefined itself through both class- and race-based claims of moral and cultural superiority and through privileged consumption, a definition the media underscored by continually addressing middle-class Brazilians as consumersâor rather, as consumers denied. In these times, adults became more flexible in employment, and put stakes in their children’s expensive private education. They engaged in elaborate comparison shopping, stockpiling of goods, and financial strategizing. Ongoing desire for distinction and âfirst- worldâ modernity prompted these Brazilians to buy foreign goods through contraband, thereby defying state protectionist policy. Discontented with the constraints of the national economy, they welcomed neoliberalism.
By uncovering connections between culture and politics, O’Dougherty complicates understandings of the middle class as a social group and category. Illuminating the intricate relation between identity and local and global consumption, her work will be welcomed by students and scholars in anthropology and Latin American studies, and those interested in consumption, popular culture, politics, and globalization.

O'Dougherty has captured the spirit of an era when middle-class dreams met rampant inflation head-on. She analyses the role neighborhoods, ethnic origins, government programs, and personal connections played in the widely differing fates of her informants, but time and again theories give way to the fascinating concrete details of Brazilians trying to get ahead, or merely to stay afloat, in the midst of a swollen tide of economic chaos. Implicit in her critique is the notion that the dream itself was highly suspect, and detrimental to the Brazilian ethos, but Hey! Doesn't everyone want to go to Disneyworld?

Wrong generation.......2007-01-11

We got our son a new Mindstorm for Christmas - the NXT. This book was designed for the previous generation of the Mindstorm, so was of no use to us. The description on-line was not clear to us that we were wasting our money.

This is the perfect compilation set of fun, and challenging projects which can easily be manipulated for your own robotic tastes. The sources of this book are the masters in the field, and do an astounding job sharing their wealth of knowledge.

Where do they get these people?.......2002-10-26

Once again Syngres has put together a top notch team of Lego builders. The robots in here are incredible to say the least. I was amazed to see that CS Soh had a hand in this book as I've been a big fan of his LEGO work on the web for some time. I just finished building all of the robots in the prequel to this book for the Star Wars Dark side lego kit when I saw this become available. These are all top notch robots built by people who know their lego robots. They don't beat around the bush-they give you step by step instructions for buidling these robots. They go one step beyond the first book by giving you alternate building instructions for download. I'm going to use this in my high school robotics class. Top notch.

Nature tries to minimize the surface area of a soap film through the action of surface tension. The process can be understood mathematically by using differential geometry, complex analysis, and the calculus of variations. I bought this book after I read C. V. Boys' book "Soap Bubbles (Their Colors and Forces Which Mold Them)". Yes, it more technical, and a science background is need for the formulas. However, there are some things in this book that the layman might have an interest in. The soap film photos are great, some nice history and there are some things that can be done with household materials. And yes, the book is out of date, but if you have more than a passing interest in soap films/bubbles then I would get this book. The reference index is quite invaluable for those that are fascinated by this subject.

Excellent discussion of the physics of soap films/bubbles.......2000-10-17

Starting with a review of basic concepts such as surface tension and energy considerations, this book develops the basic physics of soap films and soap bubbles. Topics discussed include minimum surfaces in two and three dimensions, some practical applications of soap films, multiple bubbles,analogue and analytical methods, the Laplace-Young Equation and many others. The book contains some excellent color plates containing pictures of various soap films and illustrating some of the concepts discussed.

The mathematical and physical level is modest. A knowledge of basic differential equations and how to apply Newton's Second Law will get you through. Some more advanced concepts such as the the idea of curvature from differential geometry and the force due to a column of liquid from fluid statics are sometimes used but the context of their use makes them pretty self explanatory in this book. The Calculus of Variations is often referred to and an appendix covers the basic concepts of this branch of mathematics, but no particular knowledge of this subject is required to enjoy the book.

All in all an informative and enjoyable book.

Good book, but a bit out of date........2000-04-14

This book describes the physics of the formation and minimization of soap films and bubbles. It relies heavily on mathematics. For example, the interference patterns in a soap film are given. Rigorous proofs for the minimization of bubbles and soap films are helpful, but only if one has had enough math to understand the proof. The author also uses conventions that many people would find confusing. It would not be hard to split this book in two. The first book would be just the observed phenomena, and the second would be the mathematical proofs of the phenomena. This book is well written, but the interposition of the mathematical proofs changes this book from a cool book about bubbles to a textbook about bubbles
