Book Description

Bored selling commercials for NBC's Today & Tonight shows, I rebuilt an 1898 yacht to sail around the world with my wife.

In my first foreign port I met a very astute fellow building a deepwater harbor, schools and hospitals for the British Colonial government in exchange for a 30-year income tax-free contract. Following his instructions, I found a dirt-poor British island in the Caribbean, obtained a contract with the Crown. I began raising millions from investors. Six months later, England gave this 99.9% black island its independence. Read the book for its grim but fascinating ending and my half-million dollar award from IRS

Here's a successful 45-year-old guy, bored with selling spot TV commercials for NBC' THODAY and TONIGHT shows in NYC. He talks his wife into sailing around the world in his rebuilt 11898 yha yacht. They get as far as the Island of Dominica in the Caribbean; rent a huge old plantation and fall in love with the scenery, climate and lifestyle. The offer to build a deepwater harbor, tourist hotels, casino, roads &schools for the incredibly impoverished island to the British Colonial Office in London, in exchange for a thirty-year tax-free, duty-free contract. The Brits go for it. They begin selling the idea to investors and raise lots of money. Six months later,England give "Internal Self-Rule" to the local govenment. Corrupt politicans covet the plan. They call a special session in the legislative assembly and cancel the contract! What happens next gave the title to this book its true name: This You Won't Believe! The thrilling climax comes when the corrupt government hires thugs who threaten to kill the author if he doesn't leave. Back in the US, they file the loss of $500,00 with IRS

1 out of 5 stars Egotistical Entrepreneur Is Run Out Of Dominica.......1999-04-15

It is hard to feel sorry for Maxx Robinson who, along with his wife, were run out of the island of Dominica. It seems he never relates well with the island people. They are merely cogs in his machine. He is even arrogant enough to want to change the name of the island to one of his own choosing. When building a business one must be sure of the building blocks and Mr. Robinson was woefully undereducated about one of the most important resources of any company--the people. I found the part about the restoration of the ship Picket more enjoyable. I wish he would of kept sailing instead of trying to build an empire.

5 out of 5 stars A real life Forest Gump............1999-02-08

Maxx Robinson is married to my Aunt and his book is about a period in his life that is similar to the movie "Forest Gump". The providence, the inrigue, the people and the humor are captivating to the mind and stir the spirit. Follow him as he rides 20 ft swells off the coast of Haiti, makes deals with the crown, and evades hostiles on a once friendly island. Hats off to you Maxx on a great true story that is still being written!

Book Description

The 500 Home Run Club: Baseball's Greatest Home Run Hitters from Babe Ruth to Mark McGwire is one of the most unusual and revealing baseball books ever written. It tells the stories of the 16 men who have hit more than 500 home runs. They are all here, from Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth to Mark McGwire, the latest player to hit 500 homers. In first-person accounts with friend and agent Bob Allen, baseball's most legendary sluggers describe and assess their own careers and lives, and each other's, including the obstacles they faced along the way. Allen interviewed 180 former major leaguers to get their first-person accounts of playing with and against baseball's most dominant sluggers in what is destined to become one of the best baseball books of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Updated with McGwire.......2001-01-25

Right now there are sixteen players who have hit over 500 home runs. Each one has a nice write-up and stories that are very enjoyable to read. Fifteen are retired or deceased and one is still playing.

5 out of 5 stars New and Improved........2001-01-15

I have always dreamed of meeting the 16 baseball players that have hit over 500 home runs. Now I realize that meeting Ruth, Ott, Mantle and Matthews would be impossible that's why I'm glad to have a copy of this book.

Along with those listed earlier you read about Aaron, Schmidt, Jackson, Foxx, Killebrew, Mays, Robinson, Williams, McCovey, Banks, Murray and the newest member McGwire.

The book is new and updated and the 16 players are listed alphabetically and no ranking system is used. I like this concept as it gives the reader the choice as to which they consider the best of this very special and elite group.

Each chapter is written to not only discuss the career of the player but also let others who knew them talk about the person as well. The book also includes photos of each of the players. This is for every baseball fan young and old - excellent work and well done!!

      Book Description

The Federal Theatre Project, a 1930s relief project of the Roosevelt administration, brought more theater to more people in every corner of America that at any time in U.S. history. The Project had units in every region of the country, including groundbreaking African American troupes, and staged productions from daring dramas like The Voodoo Macbeth, Waiting for Lefty, and The Cradle Will Rock to musicals, vaudeville, and puppet shows. It was canceled in a firestorm of controversy that gave birth to the damning question: "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist party?"
This book documents that vibrant, colorful, politically explosive time, which gave rise to bitter debates about the role of government in American art and culture. It includes interviews with such Federal Theatre actors, playwrights, directors, designers, producers, and dancers as Arthur Miller, Studs Terkel, Jules Dassin, Katherine Dunham, Rosetta Lenoire, John Houseman, and many others.
Voices from the Federal Theatre is a tie-in with the public televison special Who Killed the Federal Theatre? hosted by Judd Hirsch and coproduced by Schwartz with the Educational Film Center.

        2 out of 5 stars FOR beginners.......2007-04-13

This book is good for beginners who want to use simple functions of Dreamweaver 8. However, if you are looking for advanced features or doing things beyond simple text and simple images this book is not for you.

        4 out of 5 stars A bit disappointed.......2007-01-19

This is probably a decent book for someone without any web skills or has never used an interface similiar as this (as I have). I purchased this book along with the DW Bible and found as this is perhaps a good getting started book, it was light on overall material. The author presented the archaic method to HTML pages first (I thought this was odd) before presenting the newer CSS style.
Its a decent book but the bible is much better.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book!!!!.......2006-03-16

This is the worst instruction manual I have ever read. It makes things way more complicated than need be. The pictures are useless and the format of the book is ridiculously slow. A reader does not even learn how to open a new file until CHAPTER 3!!!Dreamweaver is an extremely intuitive program I was able to put up a simple website only after I PUT THE BOOK DOWN and started experimenting with the program itself. Bottom line: this book is a total waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars How to Do Everything with Dreamweaver 8 (How to Do Everything).......2006-03-10

Great book and easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars The Guide to Getting Started in Dreamweaver.......2006-01-01

A few weeks ago I switched from Adobe GoLive to Dreamweaver 8 and bought this manual to help me make the transition. I've been working with the book (and Dreamweaver 8) for two weeks now. There isn't anything that I expected to be able to do that I couldn't find instructions for in "How to Do Everything".

When I began I literally has never even seen Dreamweaver in action. I looked up how to create a site - there it was. I looked up how to create new pages, found instructions and ran into some template pages Dreamweaver included. Easy. It was a bit scant on creating the functioning of forms, but most consumers will ask for help with forms anyway. Next, I want to dive into adjusting the CSS (what MS Word calls "styles"). I see the chapter in "How do Do..." and will tackle that next week!

I should also note that I'm using Mac OS X and not MS Windows. There's a disclaimer at the beginning of the manual stating that all the illustrations are for Windows, but so far I haven't found anything that didn't line up exactly with the Mac version.

Overall, it's a helpful book with enough information to guide me through building and publishing my first Dreamweaver site in only a few days, but not too much information that I'm lost looking for anything.

Buy this book if you're looking for an easy guide to producing and publishing your web pages in the industry standard: Dreamweaver.

        Book Description

In 1521, the city of Tenochtitlan, magnificent center of the Aztec empire, fell to the Spaniards and their Indian allies. Inga Clendinnen's account of the Aztecs recreates the culture of that city in its last unthreatened years. It provides a vividly dramatic analysis of Aztec ceremony as performance art, binding the key experiences and concerns of social existence in the late imperial city to the mannered violence of their ritual killings.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Wordy, ponderous style obscures interesting insights.......2006-05-08

OK, I'm not an academic, but I've read many books on Mesoamerican archeology and history. While there's good information here, it just about kills me to read more than a dozen pages in a sitting. The author's writing is filled with prose that adds little to the discussion. Check this out:

"Among their putative descendants the Mexica had marked themselves out by their early ferocity and their success in the savage game of war, but as the city grew they also, more tremulously, sought to identify themselves as the heirs of these men [Toltecs] who had made a world through art."

There's enough value here to fight my way through to the end, but it's going to take awhile. A lot more accessible text will be found in "Aztec Thought and Culture" by Miguel Leon-Portilla

        4 out of 5 stars A definitive study.......2002-07-26

Inga Clendinnen has written a definitive guide to the Aztecs that attempts to view this somewhat enigmatic peoples in a manner that doesn't attempt to classify the ritualistic society that emerged from the Mexica Empire, but rather understand the roles of each social strata within the microcosm. There is an inevitable tendency to look at the religious perspective, focusing acutely on the human sacrifice and also on the Spanish conquest but the author shifts away (whilst having an opinion on the role of the victim) from these well-trodden paths to discussing the greater mores and individual experiences of the society.
There is an extremely interesting chapter discussing the roles of wives, in particular the ascribing of fertility and maternal aspects and the circumscribing of any 'political' role. This, in turn, leads to a further discussion on the role of the mother and the 'growing' eidetism that permeates cultural perception.
The text concludes with a brief chapter on the final destruction of Tenochitlan rounding off a work that brilliantly analyses Aztec ceremony and the individual's place within this society at the end of an Empire.

        4 out of 5 stars a handy overview.......2001-10-18

I found this a readable and scholarly outline of Aztec culture from the point of view (so far as we can recover it) of the Aztecs themselves. The focus is on what they thought and felt and how they lived. (De Winter's review below gives a description of the book's topic layout.)

The title refers to Aztecs, but the author calls them Mexica (pronounced meh-SHEE-kah) throughout because it's what they called themselves.

Especially appreciated are her reminders that we tend to see in conquered peoples what we want to see, and that many accounts of this people were written by Spanish colonizers.

4 out of 5 stars To understand the Aztec Civilization.......2000-06-02

A lot of books are available about Precolumbian civilizations, especially mesoamerican; Aztecs and Mayas are the most learned of all. BUT, we read always the same informations for a long time. Inga CLENDINNEN gives us "An Interpretation" : what kind of civilization has rizen on the plateau of Mexico-Tenochtitlan ? How to explain Aztecs's power in a region where so many people had developped cities and values such as Olmecs (in TEOTIHUACAN) or Toltecs (in TULA) ? We discover first the City and its meaning. Then, we enter the mentality of the peoples who entertain LIFE by their Death (the Victims), their Work (Warriors, Priests, Merchant) or their personal place in the society (Males, Wives, Mothers). Third, we enter the Sacred and we begin to understand how the Rituals may consolidate the society with the Fear of others... before being the plea of a revolt of vassal populations. AZTECS were strong by their military organization but weak by their believes : an entire world fearing the sun could not been able to born another day, organizing war to provide their temples with victims to their Gods, such a world had to find its limits. When the Spaniards came with their "magic"... Aztecs resist, but only two years. The Death of the Empire is to find in its structures self. The same, with other contexts, explains the fall of the Ancient Indian Worlds, facing the Spaniards, the French or the Englishmen. Understanding how to be strong meant to become weak, for Native Americans old civilizations, may permit the Renaissance of New Indian worlds; but here, I go beyond the Interpretation of the Author. The Book tells us how to enter in Aztecs Civilization Construction, as we visit an Architecture, a Mecanism... Thanks to Inga CLENDINNEN for this initiation (please, excuse the bad english of a natural french writer).

                          Book Description

From origin stories to contemporary struggles over treaty rights and sovereignty issues, Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal explores Wisconsin’s rich Native tradition. Each chapter is a compact tribal history of one of the state’s Indian nations—Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Oneida, Menominee, Mohican and Brothertown, and Ho-Chunk—and the book relies on the historical perspectives of Native people. Author Patty Loew focuses on oral tradition—stories, songs, the recorded words of Indian treaty negotiators, and interviews—as well as other untapped Native sources, such as tribal newspapers, to present a distinctly different view of history.
Elders and tribal historians from each of the twelve Native communities represented in the book participated in the book’s development—making suggestions, recommending sources, and offering criticism. Indian Nations of Wisconsin is illustrated with more than seventy photographs.

Patty Loew takes a novel approach in this book and uses Native American sources to tell Native American history! Oral history, treaty minutes, recorded speeches by Native American leaders, and other Native sources are used over the traditional "white" sources that make up the majority of Native American history. The book reads extremely well and is intensely interesting. Each chapter tells the story of a Wisconsin Indian nation from the point of view of that nation. This is an enjoyable book to read for anyone interested in Native American history. Moreover, it is an invaluable addition to scholarship and a (hopefully) trend-setting example of using Native sources to tell Native history.

                          Book Description

Scholars exploring the history of science under the Nazis have generally concentrated on the Nazi destruction of science or the corruption of intellectual and liberal values. Racial Hygiene focuses on how scientists themselves participated in the construction of Nazi racial policy. Robert Proctor demonstrates that the common picture of a passive scientific community coerced into cooperation with the Nazis fails to grasp the reality of what actually happened--namely, that many of the political initiatives of the Nazis arose from within the scientific community, and that medical scientists actively designed and administered key elements of National Socialist policy.

The book presents the most comprehensive account to date of German medical involvement in the sterilization and castration laws, the laws banning marriage between Jews and non-Jews, and the massive program to destroy "lives not worth living:' The study traces attempts on the part of doctors to conceive of the "Jewish problem" as a "medical problem," and how medical journals openly discussed the need to find a "final solution" to Germany's Jewish and gypsy "problems."

Proctor makes us aware that such thinking was not unique to Germany. The social Darwinism of the late nineteenth century in America and Europe gave rise to theories of racial hygiene that were embraced by enthusiasts of various nationalities in the hope of breeding a better, healthier, stronger race of people. Proctor also presents an account of the "organic" health movement that flourished under the Nazis, including campaigns to reduce smoking and drinking, and efforts to require bakeries to produce whole-grain bread. A separate chapter is devoted to the emergence of a resistance movement among doctors in the Association of Socialist Physicians. The book is based on a close analysis of contemporary documents, including German state archives and more than two hundred medical journals published during the period.

Proctor has set out not merely to tell a story but also to urge reflection on what might be called the "political philosophy of science"--how movements that shape the policies of nations can also shape the structure and priorities of science. The broad implications of this book make it of consequence not only to historians, physicians, and people concerned with the history and philosophy of science, but also to those interested in science policy and medical ethics.

The book is one of the best-- and not only because it is meticulously researched and written, but because it does not stint at showing that the most respected and supposedly wisest of men can, in their own folly, commit unspeakable crimes. And that science can justify these crimes. It is one of the most powerful arguments against the idea that mankind has progressed that I've read of late.

Directing his book to the academic world, Proctor presented the medical and biomedical communities as the propelling forces behind Hitler's holocaust. After explaining the historical origins and context of Nazism, Proctor provided an illuminating examination of the obscure, complex role of Nazi medical science and "applied biology" in the development of Nazi public health policy and the implementation of Nazi atrocities. Proctor disclosed how the medical profession, motivated by politics and a lust for power and prestige, used science to produce knowledge to be used to the detriment and even the destruction of others. Proctor's comprehensive assessment also revealed international influences (normally erased from American history books!) and scientific "evidence" which contributed to the scientific and political views that helped shape Nazi medical culture, and political and racial policies of the Third Reich. Proctor detailed Nazi programs involving racial purification, sterilization, women's rights, euthanasia, and scientific experimentation as examples of how politics shaped the practice of science. Proctor also detailed the resistance to the onslaught of Nazism by the Association of Socialist Physicians, the most organized form of medical opposition and how German medicine might have evolved had history taken a different path. Proctor concluded with an epilogue on postwar legacies and detailed the events that occurred to those involved in the implementation of the Nazi public policies including the transition of prewar "racial hygiene" into postwar "human genetics". 5 out of 5 stars Great Book Eyeopening!.......2001-07-10

I read this book after Peter Sichrovsky's 'Schuldig Geboren' (Born Guilty) about the offspring of noted Nazis. The connection? A whole lot of the latter were descended from Nazi doctors. Many of them were themselves in or studying medicine, and the claim was made repeatedly of the huge following of the whole medical profession for Naziism. And why not?, the Nazi doctrine itself can be rendered by the phrase 'racial hygiene'! Imagine having a whole political movement willing to empower physicians, give them their heart's delight for social prestige and influence (in funded public health measures) and eliminate a huge fraction of their competitors/rivals (Jewish doctors) to boot? But did you know that the inspiration for a lot of Hitler's measures (from anti-alcohol measures to restricted immigration, to sterilization of 'undesirables') came from the USA? Frightening how close our two systems could be.

I did this book for a college book review. Though hard to get into at first, the book is very informative and interesting, *if* you are interested in the whole Nazi medicine story.

What were the scientific views of the followers of Nazism and what scientific "evidence" helped them to decide public policy? Author Robert N. Proctor does an excellent job answering these questions.
