Book Description
fter business ventures went bust during the Great Depression and a fruitless quest for the fabled Anglo Saxon silver vein, Walter Berry finally got his break when he revolutionized the steel industry by designing and building oxygen lances.
He was not content to retire on his laurels though and set off to build a financial legacy for the world's children. The culmination of his and his wife's efforts led to the establishment of the Walter V. and Idun Y. Berry Fellowship Program in Children's Health at Stanford University.
Throughout his 98 years, Berry possessed undying optimism, a contagious sense of good humor, and a respect for all people. His story and the challenges he faced and overcame through persistence and hard work are a source of inspiration to all of us who dream of new frontiers.

Fourth rate tripe.......2007-09-18
This is without a doubt the most plodding utterly boring peice of tripe I have ever had the displeasure of reading. Madden's incessant jumping from one name drop to another with no thought of story or backing is painful at best. Rather than form any kind of thoughtful baseball memior, it comes off as pages and pages of "look who I met one day!" I would soundly beg anyone with any thought of reading material to bypass this tripe without a second thought.
A HIGHLY ENJOYABLE BOOK.......2006-06-03
THIS BOOK IS A COLLECTION OF INTERVIEWS, STORIES AND INSIGHTS ABOUT VARIOUS PLAYERS, COACHES AND OWNERS. IT COVERS SUCH PLAYERS AS THE MICK, THE SCOOTER, YOGI AND THE BOSS. IT COVERS A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT FACTS, FROM ADDICTIONS, FUNERALS, TO PERFECT GAMES. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOR BASEBALL AND ESPECIALLY YANKEE FANS. A MUST READ.
A highly enjoyable compendium especially for baseball fans.......2004-08-08
The collaborative effort of sports journalist and baseball fan Bill Madden and the New York Daily News, Bill Madden: My 25 Years Covering Baseball's Heroes, Scoundrels, Triumphs And Tragedies collects Madden's most memorable stories from the "Daily News" archives. From World Series heroes to All-Star games, trades, hirings, firings, scandals, debuts, record-setters, Hall of Famers, the end of legends, and much more, Bill Madden surveys all aspects of the great sport and the dedicated albeit all too human individuals who devote themselves to it. A highly enjoyable compendium especially for baseball fans.
Madden's Collection from The Daily News.......2004-06-01
New York Daily News sportswriter Bill Madden has provided us with a collection of his columns from the past 25 years. I like that the book is divided into chapters such as Remembered Friends, Scoops and Exclusives, Villains and Scoundrels, Tragedies and Travesties, and Colorful Characters to mention a few. I enjoy reading about events and people who were once part of the baseball scene that I remember. Most, but not all, involve the Yankees. You don't have to be a Yankees' fan, I'm not, but I still enjoy reading the articles of sportswriters in different parts of the country. If you are a fan of the Yankees, you will especially enjoy the book.
Great Sports Writing.......2004-05-18
This is an awesome collection of baseball articles and columns from Bill Madden, New York's best sports writer. Baseball fans will love this book.
There is a very interesting story on DiMaggio's relationship with his "long time friend and attorney" Morris Engelberg, who became the sold trustee for DiMaggio's estate when Joe passed away. Also, there are some good stories on Darryl Strawberry, Billy Martin, Fay Vincent, and, of course, George Steinbrenner.
I highly recommend this book.

A nice addition to your collection.......1998-04-22
(British first edition, published 1997 by Chameleon)
This is a very well-presented publication, plenty of pictures, information and inside interviews. An up-market coffee-table book. We are treated to a behind the scenes look at the television Saint. However, those expecting a review of the novels will be disappointed. The book deals only with TV and film.
The author obviously enjoys his subject, and though plainly serious about it keeps it all extremely light-hearted.
For those that have just come into contact with recent re-runs of the TV series, or for those of us that can remember the originals, this book is an extremely pleasant and interesting trip down memory lane.
For those Charteris afficianados amongst us, the book is a worthwhile addition to a collection as it provides some good background information. It also looks good on the coffee-table.

** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
Comic writers trace the X-Men series' evolution, challenge its metaphors, and draw from its truths about human nature and human society in this exploratory look at the still-timely and often-revamped classic. With chapters such as Magneto the Jew, The New Mutants and the Corruption of the Teenager, and The Sexuality of X-Men, the contributors highlight the strange ties between the characters and current society. From mutant subcultures in the real world to the reality of racism and heterosexism not so different from that of the world of the X-Men, this book takes on the intersection between fiction and truth in a manner perfect for long-time comic readers, cartoon fans, and Johnny-come-lately moviegoers.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty awsome!.......2007-02-11
This was an interesting book. Instead of all the flowery things ppl can say about the X-Men, there were real people who (for the most part) had some hand in the creation of the X-Men talking about what they thought about the X-Men as a whole. In one of the chapters a man tells of how when he was a young boy he got the first issue of the commic and loved it, but didn't see any more until he was older. He told about how he had loved the first issue...but wasn't a big fan of what they ended up becoming. I enjoyed this book because it had so many different opinions and veiw points of the same thing. All in all a good read!!

Timeless Classics - Very Romantic!.......2002-03-08
If you are a Romantic who loves tradition you will definitely like this book. Full of beautiful color photographs and wonderful ideas for making your wedding "special"
Not Worth The Money.......2001-01-08
I was disappointed in this book. I found the ideas in the book very old fashioned and most often ugly. Th only good thing about the book is at the back of the book she shows how to make each seperate flower. But the craft ideas are a DEFINITE pass.
Beautiful Book.......2000-04-07
What a beautiful book! Great ideas for the bride to be. There are many ideas in this book that I'd love to incorporate into my own wedding planning. You may want to practice the ribbon styles to perfect them before your big day! ... it's a book that definitely stands above the overcrowded "wedding day planning" section of the book store.

You will continue to build your skills by creating scripts to work with Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Operations Manager, and Microsoft Virtual Server. Coverage also includes the latest scripting updates for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Each chapter highlights powerful, ready-to-run, enterprise-level scripts, and the companion CD-ROM includes sample scripts and utilities to help you put your advanced scripting skills to work right away.
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for the Exchange section alone.......2006-10-01
I picked this up after noticing it in a book shop (sorry Amazon!). I'm an Exchange administrator and this book gave me some great scripting tips for managing and monitoring my environment. I haven't gone much beyond that since, to my regret, but the concept of packaging scripts was news to me, and I would love to find the time to try out some of the other more elaborate techniques in there. But of course, I am an Exchange Administrator ;-)
As good as they say.......2006-05-02
This is an excellent follow on book to "Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide," ISBN: 0735618674, which was my previous bible. I had long ago advanced past much of what is written in that excellent foundation book for VBScript, and this advanced volume really fills in the gaps. After purchasing numerous VB and VBA references that are nothing more than syntax libraries, I feel I finally have the big picture on the capabilities of this technology with this book. It is all clear.
Combined with the Windows Internals book, I don't think there is anything I couldn't do now that I had wanted to do with this technology previously. The chapters on scripting database connections and HTAs are worth the price alone. If you do any serious scripting work, this book is the true capstone. And who else could publish such a book than the horse's mouth itself?
Delivers what it promises.......2006-03-11
It never ceases to amaze me how many scripting books, including this one, start off telling you that you should already have intermediate to advanced scripting skills before you read, yet spend an initial chapter explaining what an array or an object is. It leaves me feeling that their definition of what "advanced" is will differ greatly from mine. I am also always a little dismayed when throughout, a book plugs a costly script development studio and spends time pointing out why your chosen script editor isn't good enough for your projects.
That said, Advanced VBScript delivers what it promises. It is written for intermediate to advanced scripters and has the primary goal of introducing scripting formats, utilities, objects and processes that might otherwise be overlooked. The beginning introduces you to the WSF XML format for scripts, why you would want to use it, and how to convert your existing scripts to this format. From there you are shown how to utilize scripts as COM objects, how to add an interface to your scripts via HTML and HTA applications, performing remote scripting, and expand your scripts ability using database, ADSI, WMI components. The last section focuses on working with Exchange 2003, MOM 2005 and Virtual Server 2005. At around 500 pages, the book is certainly not an exhaustive reference for each component examined. You are provided a good introduction and general instructions to the topic, given many recipe scripts for immediate inclusion in your environment, and then provided additional detail on where to go to focus on the topic.
The book is formatted to not only be a start to finish textbook, but also serve as an excellent reference guide for the introduced components later on. Although you may find similar scripting information scattered about other VBScript books, here you have a great deal of well presented topics that cover a broad spectrum of concepts. Inclusion of this title to your reference library will provide you the information you need while keeping your bookshelf compact.
Finally, a truly advanced scripting book for VBScript.......2006-02-21
Having worked with VBScript for a little over four years I am by no means an expert; however, I feel that my experience does give me somewhat of an advanced applied knowledge of scripting. I was pretty skeptical when I saw the word "Advanced" in the title, but this book laid all my concerns to rest in the early chapters.
The book begins with securing (including digital certs and policies) and encoding scripts as well as listing some nice techniques for implementing alternate credentials in WMI and ADSI. For me personally, the real meat and potatoes of the book was the copious information pertaining to working with WSF and WSC files. Don and Jeffrey take the time to detail the reasons behind XML functionality as well as it's application within the scripted files. These guys clear up a lot of questions on these two subjects and how to package your scripts using these technologies. They wrap up the package peice with explanations around HTA's and form controls in HTML scripts.
The book moves on to cover topics such as ADSI and ADO scripting, working with WshController and remote scripts, WMI and WQL classes and techniques, and different applicable real world examples. All this information is then wrapped up with tidbits of using scripting editors to debug, sign, and package your scripts as well the wizards (WMI, ADSI, WSF, etc) and other tools available to make scripting easier.
I've obtained quite a few VBScript books over the years and this one is by far the only one dedicated to truly advanced VBScripting. If you are new to scripting with VBScript, you might want to start with another book geared to learning the methods, properties, classes, etc of the syntax and the technologies it can use. While this book does offer great explanations on advanced topics, you really need to have a solid background in scripting before you read it.
Thumbs up! Highly recommended bang for the buck!
Book Description
In volume 1 of this three-volume work, Paul Ricoeur examined the relations between time and narrative in historical writing. Now, in volume 2, he examines these relations in fiction and theories of literature.
Ricoeur treats the question of just how far the Aristotelian concept of "plot" in narrative fiction can be expanded and whether there is a point at which narrative fiction as a literary form not only blurs at the edges but ceases to exist at all. Though some semiotic theorists have proposed all fiction can be reduced to an atemporal structure, Ricoeur argues that fiction depends on the reader's understanding of narrative traditions, which do evolve but necessarily include a temporal dimension. He looks at how time is actually expressed in narrative fiction, particularly through use of tenses, point of view, and voice. He applies this approach to three books that are, in a sense, tales about time: Virgina Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway; Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain; and Marcel Proust's Remembrance of Things Past.
"Ricoeur writes the best kind of philosophy—critical, economical, and clear."—Eugen Weber, New York Times Book Review
"A major work of literary theory and criticism under the aegis of philosophical hermenutics. I believe that . . . it will come to have an impact greater than that of Gadamer's Truth and Method—a work it both supplements and transcends in its contribution to our understanding of the meaning of texts and their relationship to the world."—Robert Detweiler, Religion and Literature
"One cannot fail to be impressed by Ricoeur's encyclopedic knowledge of the subject under consideration. . . . To students of rhetoric, the importance of Time and Narrative . . . is all too evident to require extensive elaboration."—Dilip Parameshwar Gaonkar, Quarterly Journal of Speech

A Narrative of the Time of Nero
Book Description
In examining one of the defining events of the 20th century, Doris Bergen situates the Holocaust in its historical, political, social, cultural, and military contexts. Unlike many other treatments of the Holocaust, War and Genocide: A Concise History of the Holocaust discusses not only the persecution of the Jews, but also other segments of society victimized by the Nazis: Gypsies, Homosexuals, Poles, Soviet POWs, the Handicapped, and other groups deemed undesirable. With clear and eloquent prose, Bergen explores the two interconnected goals that drove the Nazi program of conquest and genocide-purification of the so-called Aryan race and expansion of its living space--and discusses how these goals affected the course of World War II. Including first hand accounts from perpetrators, victims, and eyewitnesses, the book is immediate, human, and eminently readable.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful overview for students of the Holocaust.......2007-09-17
This is a great little book for anyone who wants a concise but detailed and interesting overview of the Holocaust. It is easy to read, well laid out, and provides enough historical information for students and the general public alike. Any high school or college student who is studying modern European history will find this extremely useful.
Thoughts on Doris Bergin's "War and Genocide.....".......2006-11-04
I thought that the book was exactly what it said it was, namely, "A Concise History of the Holocaust." My only problem with it was that it was a little too concise. I think it could have used another 10 or 20 pages, perhaps as an epiogue, to bring out the horror of this event. I read this book as a potential textbook for a high school history course that I would love to teach. With additional handouts, I think this book would do very well as a textbook.
Brief but comprehensive.......2004-11-30
Dr. Doris L. Bergen has been a history professor since 1991 at University of Vermont and the University of Notre Dame. Her research and written works on Nazism, the Third Reich, Christian antisemitism, and the Volksdeutschen have made her especially qualified to write this brief history of the Holocaust. There is no specific mention of any direct or familial involvement with the Second World War (Bergen 263). War & Genocide: A Concise History of the Holocaust has an extensive bibliography which covers the entire spectrum on this topic, including general and specialized secondary research, official records, and firsthand accounts in the form of diaries and journals.
While unbiased accounts are the goal in historical research, it is extraordinarily difficult to be without an anti-Nazi bias when writing on the Holocaust. Such a traumatic event in the course of human affairs is inherently and undeniably emotional. A dispassionate account of the Holocaust would not only be uninteresting, it would be inappropriate on many important levels. Bergen uses her talents of discretion to balance the work by making it accessible on an emotional level to even serious students of history while not letting her anti-Nazi bias destroy the validity of her research.
The book is intended to be a concise history of the larger events of the Nazi takeover of Europe and their extermination of "undesirables." Bergen accomplishes this by describing the major and pertinent events of the period with minimal digression. She also keeps the events of the Holocaust in context of the larger context of the war in such a way that the reader is not lost in the details. This book attempts to give a human face to the atrocities committed by human beings on their fellow men, women, and children; it attempts to give a palpable understanding of the driving forces that made ordinary men into murderers and monsters; and it attempts to make the reader pause and reflect on this nightmarish catastrophe in an attempt to keep such a Holocaust from happening again.
This book describes the origins and policies of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi) and is careful to display evidence that their rise to power was far from inevitable. According to Bergen, the Nazis didn't pick new or arbitrary groups to focus their hatred on, instead they "reflected and built on prejudices that were familiar" in pre-Nazi Germany (1). The book exposes the friendly forces in the Weimar government that contributed to Hitler's ride by pushing aside the laws that could have stopped the Nazi party. These laws that "were simply not enforced" (48) allowed Adolf Hitler, an Austrian convicted of treason, to escape a serious jail sentence, become a German citizen, and run for president. Bergen claims "Without Hitler, Nazism, World War II, and the Holocaust would have taken very different forms, if they had occurred at all" (31). In the course of supporting these claims, the book follows the events that destroyed tens of millions of lives. This book uses many highly personalized accounts of victims like Anne Frank, who hid in Amsterdam for two years, and of perpetrators like Adolf Eichmann, Hitler's expert in the transportation and deportation of Jews, to keep the book's personal focus.
War & Genocide was thoroughly researched and has a wealth of factual and statistical information that is vital in understanding the enormity of the atrocities of the war. The information was used with considerable discretion to promote the flow of the narrative. Bergen doesn't spare the reader from graphic accounts of killing and violence except for the most gruesome of details. The book is suitable as an introduction to the Holocaust because of its breadth of focus and narrative flow. The author's conclusions are strongly supported and are very much her own. She lets her own research and experience guide conclusions that often differ from some traditionally accepted rationalizations. She is weak on some of her conclusions regarding personal decisions and motivations of the perpetrators, instead leaving the reader to decide whether or not the evidence available supports their actions. I did not necessarily agree with all of Bergen's conclusions, especially concerning the personal motivations of individual Nazis. While the book did not include much new information, it made me reconsider some of my previously held notions.
exceptionally useful and moving.......2003-10-08
This is an exceptionally useful and moving textbook on the Third Reich, World War Two, and the Holocaust. My students' response in an upper-level course on German history was outright enthusiastic. The range of aspects covered in this volume is impressive: we learn about the wider European cultural-ideological context as well as about specifically German preconditions for Nazi policies; the author discusses internal developments in the Third Reich as well as the international repercussions of war and genocide. Perhaps most important, Bergen confronts the difficult moral questions of these devastating and dramatic events. This is one of the most intelligent and helpful treatments of this topic. Bergen's writing sets new standards for clarity when relating complex historical developments.
Book Description
Some people claim that evolution is "just a theory". Do you know what a scientific theory really is? Just a theory is an overview of the modern concepts of science. A clear understanding of the nature of science will enable you to distinguish science from pseudoscience (which illegitimately wraps itself in the mantle of science), and real social issues in science from the caricatures portrayed in postmodernist critiques.
Prof. Ben-Ari's style is light (even humorous) and easy to read, bringing the latest concepts of science to the general reader. Of particular interest is his analysis of the terminology of science (fact, law, proof, theory) in relation to the colloquial meaning of these terms.
Between chapters are biographical vignettes of scientistsboth familiar and unfamiliarshowing their common commitment to the enterprise of science, together with a diversity of backgrounds and personalities.
This accessible, informative, and comprehensive work will give lay readers a good grasp of real science.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable and informative.......2005-08-18
Ben-Ari has written a highly enjoyable book about the nature of science that reads quickly and easily. I strongly recommend this book for anyone involved with teaching science (that may be a professor, secondary, or elementary school teacher). The author takes the best, most sober points from philosophers, historians, and sociologists of science and demonstrates the implications these works have for preparing a scientifically literate public. He clarifies troublesome definitions such as "theory" "fact" "proof" and "hypothesis". His insights on falsification and the need for an understanding of statistics are dead-on. I am using this book in the post-secondary courses I teach.
Why only four stars? First, in his scientists' vignettes (where he uses biographical information on a scientist to illustrate a nature-of-science-point) are a rather homogenous bunch, for true excellence I would have to see more diverse group of scientists discussed. Secondly, his understanding of science as a discourse is somewhat impoverished, and I would say that his treatment of the topic isn't completely fair.
But- this should not take away from a strong recommendation. Great book!
