5 out of 5 stars Great reading for this election year (or any other).......2004-06-02

Here are four in-depth conversations, most centering on art and politics, published in 2001. Considering the tidal wave of events since then, it's astounding how these interviews still resonate with contemporary issues. Depending on your point of view you'll find Rollins, Biafra, and to a certain extent Billy Childish, insightful or exasperating in their politics, but its hard to miss the passion in their arguments. Ferlinghetti, by far, takes the longest view of events past and present, and suggests solutions (some new, some old), sounding the most conservative by comparison. Many will consider these four exchanges as nothing more than preaching to the already converted, but in this political season they take on the character of voices crying in the wilderness.

            5 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and Inspiring.......2003-01-13

Wow. This collection of interviews is amazing. Though I had heard very little about any of these men when I picked the book up, I found their words very interesting. Even where I disagreed with their messages, they caused me to think about why I disagree. Many times I felt like putting down the book and going out to either create or protest. Even though all four of these men are politically active and radical, they each provide very different perspectives that, when presented together, have much more power than they could on their own. I recommend this book for anyone in search of inspiration to question and act.

4 out of 5 stars a good perspective on 2 mixed bags and 2 relatively unknowns.......2002-07-01

2 noted ex-users turned full time cranks Biafra-speed, Rollins-ritalin fronting 2 good punk bands DeadKennedys and BlackFlag are getting old. Their legacies are questionable.
They both never met a microphone they didn't like. They talk more than little girls. Both are way too serious and need to lighten up. They're in the entertainment industry yet yearning for artistic integrity (then stick to arts and craft shows).

Rollins complains about book/album sales, his business, and his own niche marketing scheme. The guy brags about hard work, working out, and dislike of everything hokey and cheesy. Typical manic depressive straight edge loudmouth. Relax buddy, you need a rest guy. He turned out just like his parents, but he can't settle down. Hence the mass confusion running out of his head. Every job has it's ups and downs. They get monotonous and draining. Worrying about money [stinks], so you compromise nearly everything up to and including you're very being. Hank likes being "commercial" because big corporations pay well and promptly. Movies and commercials are money on the table. It's easy and if he doesn't take it someone else will.

Biafra is one man publicity stunt show. Running for mayor(truly funny and creative). Including a poster of sodomy in records and calling it artistic freedom under the holy grail of free speech. I don't know anyone who buys a record expecting or wanting such a thing. The poster is funny but is by all definitions pornographic. Not everyone has a dirty sense of humor. Jello fought and lost for our right to do such silly things. Now he worries about his company's future as a b-music distributer especialy with the rise of this internet file sharing thingy (more punk than the whole punk movement combined). He's made a living as a paranoid alarmist worrying people to death.

Bottom line, everyone's replacable, independent. Past succes doesn't guarantee future success, but that's who gets better odds. Like it or not. Whether your stuff has critical mass approval or not. Carrying the torch will get you burned both up and out. These guys are one trick ponies branching off into other areas. A good perspective on 2 long winded spotlight hogs. Their music speaks or itself. JB's album with no means no and doa are worth buying or downloading. Black Flag is good clean fun. RESEARCH/VSEARCH always put out good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Real Conversations: an envigorating and inspiring book!.......2002-04-29

I've been familiar with Biafra/Rollins/Childish and Ferlinghetti for a long time, but can't say I'm a huge fan of any of the four, but in reading through these interviews, I have a whole new respect for all of them. Vale talks about so many issues of political importance, artistic integrity, life, and everything with them. What comes through is not esoteric or academic, not something only appealing to punks or poets, but a feeling of being alive. All four are very smart, funny, engaging and interesting individuals and Vale really knows how to bring out their personalities. This is like a bible of common sense from 4 great prophets of the eternal underground. If you yearn to be creative and find your own happiness outside of the constraints of a 9-5 job and mainstream culture, this book will hopefully be an inspiration to you. It's also refreshing to hear people talking about important political and philosophical issues in a way that makes you believe that you can be involved and help make culture and live how you want. We also glimpse into their lives outside of the public eye through some wonderful storytelling. Vale helps to put the nail in the coffin of the "dumb punk" notion: these guys are geniuses. You need this book!

5 out of 5 stars A great read for these times.......2001-10-18

            [paragraph missing]

Essentially, the best thing about "Real Conversations No. 1" is that it's just that -- a good chunk of honest dialogue between a guy and four other guys who sound like they're pretty close friends with him, talking about what's on their minds and in their lives (both theirs and his) in ways that are sometimes entertaining, sometimes thought-provoking and sometimes even illuminating. And, yes, at least two of the people talking in this book have figured somewhat prominently in the entertainment and pop culture landscapes for the past few years. But guess what? They actually say stuff that doesn't totally sound like part of their act! Henry Rollins, for all the macho, stoic bluster that he gives off, turns out to be pretty funny and down-to-earth, as well as enthusiastic to the point of geekdom when it comes to archiving bootlegs of bands that he admires and/or played with. Jello Biafra's comments are obviously more political and exhibitionist, but he does make light of how he got that way in the first place, and how he was just as inspired by other people in the anti-WTO protests in Seattle as they were by him. Besides that, the most wholly "inspirational" words probably come from Billy Childish, who advocates "doing it yourself" (and "thinking and taking responsibility for yourself" as well) not just as a moral or even as a craft, but as something that fits into enjoying the simple fact that you're alive. And Lawrence Ferlinghetti comes off almost as the wise grandfatherly figure who has a wealth of stories to tell about the past but knows pretty clearly about what the future entails.

But really, the total effect of all these conversations for me wasn't so much hero worship or a privileged glimpse into the workings of complicated minds. It was more the idea that, if I ever had the chance, I'd wanna hang out with these people and talk about some of this stuff with them myself. (Of course, in some ways, I'm not sure that I could even get a word in edgewise, but that's another matter.) I guess that's one of my personal reasons for being glad that I bought this book directly from Re/Search in San Francisco, almost beyond the whole deal of supporting the independents: When I called the place up to inquire about my order right after the attacks happened, I thought at first that I'd gotten a particularly thoughtful and conversational assistant who sounded vaguely like Jello Biafra on the phone. It turned out to be Vale himself, and we talked for maybe half an hour about the attacks, how they'd played out on CNN and the likelihood that any chance for progressive politics was dead now. He seemed as interested in what I had to say as I was in what he had, and I think it probably helped get us both out of the shell-shock and thinking clearly again.

So maybe some of these good things still aren't quite out of reach yet. Or, if they are, then maybe now we'll scramble a bit more to get hold of them again.

4 out of 5 stars Great Starting book for people wanting to learn Javascript........2007-09-18

If you are new to Javascript, and know just a little HTML, than this book is perfect. I knew some HTML and wanted to make my page more interactive and this book goes through step by step and gives plenty of examples to guide you in the right direction. Sometimes it gets a little repetitve, but thats a good thing to ingrain the fundamentals of Javascript. A definate help to get me into the Javascript language in the fastest time.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful guide to the perplexed.......2007-03-27

Really a good book for the web novice. Has a smooth and gradual buildup of complexity without ever really being complex.

5 out of 5 stars Good way to get started.......2007-03-21

I went from not knowing anything about JavaScript when I started this book, to feeling that I now have enough foundation to go make something happen with it. Now, granted, I do have a background in C++, but I ripped through this book pretty quickly. People with less of a background might take a little more time. It's slightly out of date, but that's nothing that should hold you back from getting it if you're looking for a solid primer. After this book you'll feel good enough to go and look only to figure out the fancy new stuff.

              3 out of 5 stars A Professional Programmers Review.......2007-03-12

If you are a programmer and you know nothing about JavaScript, this is a good place to start. Mr. Pollock's style is easy to read and follow. His examples, while somewhat humorous, are illustrative and educational. His pace seems a little slow at first, but overall he presents a very cohesive study of the fundamental JavaScript concepts. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to add a little JavaScript to his resume.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one!.......2007-01-25

Yes, this is the one book to purchase if you wish to learn JavaScript. It's written in easy to understand prose with excellent examples throughout. At least some understanding of coding Html really is a prerequisite, but you'd have to expect that. Mr. Pollock has authored an excellent text book more than worth the purchase price. Go for it, I'm glad I did.

By the vastly amusing author of Don't Know Much About History and Don't Know Much About Geography, this fresh look at America's greatest conflict will dispel all those misconceptions you acquired by watching "Gone With the Wind". Davis has a genius for bringing history to life, sorting out the players, the politics and the key events -- Harpers Ferry, Shiloh, Gettysburg, Emancipation, Reconstruction -- in a way that will enlighten even the most dedicated back-of-the-class napper. A brilliant crash course, this book vividly brings to life the people -- from Dred Scott to Abraham Lincoln -- and the everyday details that make up History with a capital H.

              Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Historian Kenneth C. Davis brings his remarkable ability for making the past vital and entertaining to this in-depth study of the United States' bloodiest conflict. Not content to rehash the one-dimensional accounts that traditional history textbooks have foisted upon students, Davis reexamines with a fresh, critical eye the situations leading up to and the key events that shaped the Civil War. He begins by reaching back to the earliest days of American history to understand the political, economic, and social conditions that allowed a nation founded upon the notion that "all men are created equal" to enslave and degrade 12 million human souls. In his detailed account of the war's battles and political power struggles, he introduces us to the personalities--from Abraham Lincoln, General Robert E. Lee, and Frederick Douglas to common soldiers and war widows--whose vision, compromises, determination, and powerlessness together made history. Davis also brings to light little-known facts and episodes that for generations were ignored or swept under the rug of the American conscience--including the role of women in the war effort and the massacre of blacks at the hands of Union civilians. All Americans would do well to take a new look at this period of history that "shaped the country's political landscape like the great glaciers had once carved America" because, as Davis explains, its effects linger today. "The Civil War," he says, "remains at the core of our greatest national problem: the great racial divide that grew from slavery." Few programs speak with such intelligence and eloquence about how far the United States has come in terms of what the war taught--and how far it still has to go. 3 out of 5 stars Fails to Prove its Thesis.......2006-11-17

When I was in high school, we were assigned to write a paper on the causes of the Civil War. I think of the 30 people in my class, 29 wrote their papers on slavery; I wrote mine on state's rights. I focussed on the threats to the Union encountered by Andrew Jackson. When this book began with the thesis that the Civil War was caused primarily and perhaps exclusively by slavery, I was willing to let the author make his case. After completing the book, I am not convinced. The South was vanquished, slavery abolished, and 140 years later the South is still almost diametrically opposed politically to the North. Look at the results of the last two presidencial elections. Slavery is gone and all of the state's rights issues are still there. The South is as anti-Federal now as they were before the Civil War. It was this difference in basic philosophy that led to the war, slavery made the differences more noticeable.

I was looking for verification of facts, like who was behind Lincoln's assassination, but this work didn't satisfy that curiosity, yet I learned much, since I didn't do American history in school.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but somewhat Shallow.......2006-07-06

I listened to this book on tape and enjoyed it overall. I confess, I had some issues as I listened to the book as I am apparently in that class of people who actually does enjoy and study history. I found the anecdotes entertaining and overall found the book appropriate for its purpose as a primer for a majority of the populace who apparently doesn't have even a cursory grasp of the keystone event in American History. It does have a tendency however to oversimplify some of the issues in an apparent effort to create a framework to understand not only the events, but their socio-economic-political implications.

You have only to read the other reviews of this work for evidence that many of the philosophical and political battles of the civil war are still being fought in American Society.

Most criticism of this work seems to be directed at Davis' contention that slavery was the issue of the Civil War. Davis does go to great lengths to make this point. It is by no means a slam dunk as there are many reputable historians who downplay this claim as an over-simplification.

However, Davis is not writing this book as a competitor or replacement for the weighty works of academia that address this question. Davis is writing to a more general audience that he appears to perceive as attempting to sluff over or bypass this issue from the civil way, perhaps in some effort to minimize or bypass the issues of racism and civil rights inequities today.

In those terms, Davis seems to be going to great lengths to address the issue in order to convince them that:

              1. Slavery is not a new issue.
              2. Slavery was integrally entwined within many of the issues cited then and since for the Civil War.

States rights were an issue? Of course they were! What were the states primarily asserting their rights to control that they believed the North and then Lincoln were threatening? Slavery was primary in this regard.

Were taxes and tariffs tied into the argument. Yes it was. What were the taxes and tariffs centered around? Issues related to the agricultural South and the industrial North who preferred to see these applied to the others and not themselves. What drove the southern agricultural system and undergirded it in the context of the times? Was it state's rights? Yes, but primarily as those state's rights applied to slavery!

Are detractors correct when they claim that many who fought the war from the North were equally racist and had no real desire to benefit negro slaves? Yes, that is undeniably true. Were there many who fought on the Southern side who did not own slaves and would have been just as happy to see slavery ended? Absolutely.

The truth of the matter is, however, that slavery as a political issue was inextrably in the weave of all the issues leading up to Lincoln's election and succession.

In this regard, maybe Davis is overstating and oversimplifying things from the point of view of anyone who is already familiar with the events of and surrounding the civil war. The point to be made, is perhaps he needs to do this with his intended audience of neophytes and newcomers who need to be slapped in the face with it to dispel the opposite error which seems to have diminished the role of slavery and then civil rights development within the US.

That said, if you have questions after reading or listening to this book, then you'll at least have a platform from which to do further research.

So, I recommend this book. It does what it sets out to do which is to introduce people with little or no historical background not only into the events of the Civil War, but the political and societal context of it.

In order to do that you have to take a stand and make a case for what you are saying. Like it or not; agree with it or not; Davis does just that and he does a credible job.

Those criticizing it on that basis are beyond the purpose of the book and for whatever reasons still fighting the original battles.

Better here than on the battlefield!

Read it. Learn. Then move on and question the premises in additional reading after this fine introduction.

4 out of 5 stars A perfect place to start, with one excception.......2006-03-17

For anyone wanting a basic education about the American Civil War, either as an educational requirement or as perhaps a lifetime hobby of interest, this is the perfect place to start. Author Davis covers every aspect of this great confrontation (except one) from the real reasons it was fought to how it came to its conclusion. There are thumbnail sketches of most of the participants on both sides, some in great detail; all of the major battles are incorporated, including the strategies and reasons for their outcome; myths are busted (no, Lincoln did not write the Gettysburg Address on an envelope); heroes and cowards receive their just desserts. My only complaint: Not one map. How can you write a history book without maps? How can your write a book about war without battlefield sketches? The book is presented chronologically in an expanded outline form, with questions asked and then answers given, making this an easy tome to return to and find quick information about specific topics. The index is equally complete in listing names and places. There is a terrific appendix giving complete documentation on such important aspects as The Emancipation Proclamation, The Dred Scott decision, Amendments to the Constitution, and much more. Even with all this detail, the book is very readable. Within this book, a person could find a narrow scope that intrigues and can lead to further exploration, whether it is Andersonville, The Underground Railroad, Gideon Welles, or the burning of Atlanta. To aid in this exploration, there is a 16-page bibliography that, in addition to title information, describes briefly what area each book covers. This is a treasure trove. But, bring your own maps.

              1 out of 5 stars Biased.......2006-02-06

I found this book very biased, which is why I continued reading. The history is horrible, but I was curious the extent to which Mr. Davis wants to cement his moral crusade view of history in lay people's minds. At one point the comparison is made between the opporators of the underground railroad and the people who resisted the Nazis. By extention Mr. Davis makes the implicit and fallacious argument, slavery is like the holocaust.

The title should be "Don't know much about slavery: How white men's stupidity continues in perpetuity."

                      Book Description

When this encyclopedic history of the Jews was first published in 1958, it was hailed as one of the great works of its kind, a study that not only chronicled an assailed and enduring people, but assessed its astonishing impact on the modern world. Now this scholarly and comprehensive book has been massively revised and updated by its author, a professor of modern history at the George Washington University and one of the most respected authorities on the lives and times of the Jewish people.

The new edition casts additional light on the milestones of the Jewish saga from the eighteenth century to the close of the twentieth: the Jews' emergence from the ghetto and into the heart of Western society, the debate between the voices of tradition, assimilation, and Zionism; virtual destruction during the Holocaust; and troubled rebirth in Israel. Here, too, are evocative portraits of today's disapora, from the Jews of America to the embattled communities of the former Soviet Union and the Third World.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive, but not faultless..........2004-02-19

OK, look, this is a very impressive volume. Clearly written and quite a nice over-view.
But I have to say the sections on Jewish resistance during the Holocaust were pathetic. The author briefly mentions The Warsaw ghetto uprising, and a few words about Hannah Senesh, but that's about it. He doesn't even mention the uprisinsg at Treblinka and Sobibor, the fighters of Vilna or Lodz, or the amazing and daring feats of a Jewish patisans in the woods throughout Europe. He also fails to mention that the strongest and best fighters tended to be Bundists, not Zionists.
Oh well, hard to write such a sweeping history and cover everything. But to say the Jews went to their deaths like "sheep" (p.541) and not even adequately recount their heroism and resistance is irresponsible and greatly disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly written and an excellent fundamental text.......2003-12-20

This work is a must for all persons interested in the dialectical evolution of the Jewish people. The language is simple and Sachar is wonderfully articulate and easy to read. Sachar covers a wide breadth of subtopics and countries in the social and geopolitical history of the Jewish people. While some of the criticisms in the earlier reviews may be true re: factual inconsistencies; the book nevertheless is an excellent introduction to neophytes or to those with an interest in Jewish history. In this writer's view, the earlier criticisms are commonly found in most historical books that contain as wide a scope as Sachar's.

1 out of 5 stars This is a highly biased book........2001-11-05

While it is quite normal for authors of Jewish History to take sides, unfortunately in this book the author gives such a distorted view that it is in many cases misleading. While I am not an expert on all facets of Jewish History, from the parts that I know I was able to find a number of basic factual errors. For example, the author states that Zyklon B gas was used throughout the Holocaust at all of the camps. In Treblinka, the Germans used carbon monoxide exhaust from tank engines. Of course this is a minor mistake, but it is an example of the author making mistakes even when he didn't have any political reasons to. A more major error is that the author portrays the Vilna Gaon as a proto-Maskil. While it is true that the Vilna Gaon said that if one isn't proficient in certain areas of science one can't fully understand Torah. Still, the Vilna's Gaon had many students, and they founded Yeshivot. Perhaps the author is uncomfortable mentioning this because these Yeshivot were one of the main reason that Haskala was unsucessful in Russia before 1860.
My main two difficulties with the book are that there is a glaring lack of basic critical information and that the author simply doesn't bother mentioning people or institutions that he doesn't like. Hungarian Jewry is almost not mentioned in the book and is ignored comparitively.
There are so many mis-representations in the book that it is sad. For example, Rabbi SR Hirsch and Dr. Zecharya Frankel are breifly portrayed as being idealogically close to each other. They both would either be insulted or amused to see this because in fact they were bitter opponents.
The main thrust of the book is to show the secularization of the Jews in Europe. But the book doesn't even bring any statistical evidence even in terms of German Jewry which should have been relatively easy ( i.e. comparing the membership in the IRG, Hirsh's synagogue, with membership in the Reform Temple in Frankfort at the same time ), and of course doesn't even bother with Polish/Russian Jewry.
The author simply ignores people or movements that he doesn't like. Vladimir ( Zev ) Jabotinsky, the leaded of the revisionist Zionists, isn't even mentioned. The fact that the Bund won the elections in the mid 30's is also not mentioned. Agudath Israel, the orthodox union, is only mentioned as an Israeli political party, as if they magically appeared on the scene. In fact they were one of the main contendors in the inter-Jewish battles between WW I and WW II. The K'hila in Lodz was controlled by the Aguda for a number of years.

Howard Sachar is about as good an historian as you could hope for. His books are detailed, clear, and generally free of bias. "Course of Modern Jewish History" is no exception.

This book follows the history of Jews throughout the world from the 18th century until today. It does so in a generally chronological order, although at times it breaks this standard to move country by country during a specific period. Each chapter ends with a "conclusion" which usually lasts anywhere from a paragraph to a page or two. This section can generally be skipped (unless you are cramming for a exam and don't want to actually be bothered with reading the chapter).

Because it is a survey text, it never goes into quite as much detail as I would like. The section on the Holocaust felt particularly rushed. Despite its prodigious length (it is nearly 900 pages), I wouldn't have complained if it were even another 100 pages longer.

Despite these shortcomings, it is a tremendous first step in the examination of modern Jewish history, and it could even serve as the final step for many.

                                      Book Description

It is hard to imagine, by their very name, the life sciences not involving the study of living things, but until the twentieth century much of what was known in the field was based primarily on specimens that had long before taken their last breaths. Only in the last century has ethology—the study of animal behavior—emerged as a major field of the life sciences.

In Patterns of Behavior, Richard W. Burkhardt Jr. traces the scientific theories, practices, subjects, and settings integral to the construction of a discipline pivotal to our understanding of the diversity of life. Central to this tale are Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen, 1973 Nobel laureates whose research helped legitimize the field of ethology and bring international attention to the culture of behavioral research. Demonstrating how matters of practice, politics, and place all shaped "ethology's ecologies," Burkhardt's book offers a sensitive reading of the complex interplay of the field's celebrated pioneers and a richly textured reconstruction of ethology's transformation from a quiet backwater of natural history to the forefront of the biological sciences.
