A Blue-Collar Classic .......2006-06-06
Peter Browning was 75 when he finished up this gutsy memoir, and it ranks among the best blue-collar stories of American life. The prose is positively alive with the spirit of the Fifties - the tough-minded Fifties that didn't make it into sitcoms. As a truck driver hauling cars across the Great West, he encountered plenty of memorable characters, and his story of a peripatetic life fifty years ago is hard to put down.
A memoir of nearly ten years on a job driving new cars.......2003-05-15
Working For Wages: On The Road In The Fifties by Peter Browning is a memoir of nearly ten years on a job driving new cars and trucks from Detroit to Los Angeles between 1949 and 1958 makes for a memoir which is hard to easily peg, charting changing social, economic and business issues of the times. Vanishing lifestyles and jobs, changing 1950s sentiments, and both humor and high drama are imparted in this lively, revealing guide.

Book Description
This work brings to readers of English a comprehensive and engaging treatment of one of America's greatest, if largely forgotten, film directors. Originally published in 1993, Dumont's celebrated study has been translated from the French by Canadian Jonathan Kaplansky.
After an introduction that decries Borzage's dismissal by later critics and historians and shows how his approach to moviemaking reflected his Masonic beliefs, 18 chapters present Borzage's entire careerthe man, the actors he worked with, the more than 100 films he made, and the effect of those films on movie audiences, especially between 1920 and 1940. This is indeed the definitive reevaluation of one of the giants of filmdom.
Lavishly illustrated with 116 photographs, this book will make the reader want to see as many of Borzage's films as possible, as soon as possible. A complete filmography, a chronological bibliography, and an index will be helpful in searching them out.

FINALLY!!!.......2007-09-19
I AM A BORZAGE!...After only reading the foreword by Martin Scorsese, I was already blown away. This book is incredible and I am ever so greatful that Frank's work has been cast into brighter light. I have spent so much of my life wanting to know more about my family and more importantly the Borzage film legacy and this book has been unbelievably satisfying. The pictures of Frank sitting next to Amelia Earhart or Joan Crawford are Mindblowing and only more intriguing. I feel like the dust has been lifted and Frank Borzage is ready to be re-discovered. Thank you Dumont and Scorsese!! It means the world to me...
Book Description
She sports a nose-ring and duppat (a scarf worn by South Asian women) along with the latest fashion in slinky club wear; he's decked out in Tommy gear. Their moves on the crowded dance floor, blending Indian film dance with break-dancing, attract no particular attention. They are just two of the hundreds of hip young people who flock to the desi (i.e., South Asian) party scene that flourishes in the Big Apple.
New York City, long the destination for immigrants and migrants, today is home to the largest Indian American population in the United States. Coming of age in a city remarkable for its diversity and cultural innovation, Indian American and other South Asian youth draw on their ethnic traditions and the city's resources to create a vibrant subculture. Some of the city's hottest clubs host regular banghra parties, weekly events where young South Asians congregate to dance to music that mixes rap beats with Hindi film music, bhangra (North Indian and Pakistani in origin), reggae, techno, and other popular styles. Many of these young people also are active in community and campus organizations that stage performances of "ethnic cultures."
In this book Sunaina Maira explores the world of second-generation Indian American youth to learn how they manage the contradictions of gender roles and sexuality, how they handle their "model minority" status and expectations for class mobility in a society that still racializes everyone in terms of black or white. Maira's deft analysis illuminates the ways in which these young people bridge ethnic authenticity and American "cool."
Customer Reviews:
Not an entertaining or accurate account.......2005-11-04
This book might suffice as a light college reading assignment (as there is not much in publication that deals with this subject matter), but if you are not forced to read it, stay away. Full of inaccurate accounts and plain falsisms, this book nowhere near respects it's subject matter, and gives an overly pedantic and bland report of Indian American Youth Culture in NYC. It is clearly the work of an individual on the outside, looking in.
A drab look at a vibrant topic..........2002-11-09
I commend Ms. Maira for writing what appears to be the first book on the Indian party remix culture in NYC. She obviously did her research but the book was too academic and didn't contain enough entertaining anecdotes. If you are not part of the Indian party scene, you may learn something; if you're part of the scene, this book won't tell you anything you don't already know.
good account.......2002-10-04
Maira does a pretty good account of look at the South Asian sub-culture of the northeast around new york and new jersey. This part of the country has long experienced different waves of immigration. South Asians are a new group to the area mainly starting in the late 1960s and is continuing today. Maira looks at how second generation south asian americans or 'desis' cope with identities as being in between black and white and dealing with stereotypes of the asian intellectual and asian store owner. Maira also focuses on obstacles they overcome while growing up such as racism (dotbusters in New Jersey, racial insults...) and with cultural differences with parents (especially for females). In addition, there is also a focus on the different ethnic/relgious differences that exist within the South Asian community that come into play. Of course with other immigrant groups, there is a a strong desire for the second and third generation to 'reconnect' with their heritages which is an important part of the book. She deals with how in the interviews desis have a desire to go to South Asia to discover their heritiage. One issue she deals with is south asian immigration patterns to the U.S. Often we think of South Asians as coming directly from the subcontinent to the U.S. directly after the immigration act of 1965. However, it's deeper then that. The first South Asians migrating started in the late 1800s and early 1900s. South Asian also come fromo other part of the South Asian Diasporia such as east Africa, United Kingdom and the West Indies. These South Asians add to the complexity of studying the group.
Overall, an easy to read book about 'desis' in the northeast.

Best-selling author and ICCF International Master Victor Charushin continues his ground-breaking exploration of chess tactics in this second volume of The Tactician's Handbook. His newest work is a remarkable study of pins - but not just any pin! Here we have double and triple pins, pins intersecting and counter-pinning, pins multiplied and compounded and pinned down in the crossfire until ... Combination Cross! This specialized tactic, often called the "cross-pin," is one of the most visually stunning patterns in chess, and certainly among the most effective. Now players of any category can master this important and often seen tactical method, sharpening skills in a manner both correct and enjoyable. IM Charushin's unique insight and highly personal style combine here to create an exquisite guidebook to the exciting world of Combination Cross.
The Tactician's Handbook Series:
Alekhine's Block, Combination Cross, Mitrofanov's Deflection, Lasker's Combination
Customer Reviews:
Good examples but with no instruction.......2004-01-09
This book, as the rest of this series by Charusin lacks explanation; the examples are interesting, but the book consists only of move lists and diagrams with no explanation of the rationale behind the moves.
It would probably be a good book if you have a master available to go with you through the games, but if you are an average chess player by me you will be dissapointed.
Book Description
Written by two internationally acclaimed animators, this classic text teaches you all you need to know about the art of timing and its importance in the animated film. This reissue includes a new foreword by John Lasseter, executive vice president of Pixar Animation Studios and director of 'Toy Story', 'Toy Story 2', 'A Bug's Life' and 'Monsters Inc.' He sets the wealth of information in this classic text in context with today's world of computer animation, showing how this is a must-have text if you want to succeed as a traditional drawn, or computer animator.
Learn all the tips and tricks of the trade from the professionals. How should the drawings be arranged in relation to each other? How many are needed? How much space should be left between one group of drawings and the next? How long should each drawing, or group of drawings, remain on the screen to give the maximum dramatic effect? The art of timing is vital.
Highly illustrated throughout, points made in the text are demonstrated with the help of numerous superb drawn examples. 'Timing for Animation' not only offers invaluable help to those who are learning the basis of animation techniques, but is also of great interest to anyone currently working in the field and is a vital source of reference for every animation studio.
John Halas, known as the 'father of animation' and formerly of Halas and Batchelor Animation unit, produced over 2000 animations, including the legendary 'Animal Farm' and the award winning 'Dilemma'. He was also the founder and president of the ASIFA and former Chairman of the British Federation of Film Societies.
Harold Whitaker is a professional animator and teacher. Many of his former students are now among some of the most outstanding animation artists of today.
* New foreword by John Lasseter of Pixar and 'Toy Story' fame
* Benefit from the expertise of two internationally acclaimed animators
* All you need to breathe life into your animation at your fingertips
Customer Reviews:
I learned so much from this book........2007-08-22
My instructor recommended this book for my special effects animation class. It was such a life savor.
It covers all the basic animation topics like Squash and Stretch, Anticipation, Slow In and Slow Out, Exaggeration, etc...
Great book!.......2007-06-27
As an animation student I found this book very helpfull. Not too heavy, just enough facts and examples to get the point across. If you are an animator or a student, you should own this book.
You will learn quickly with this no-frills book.......2007-05-19
I have referred to this book for nearly ten years, and it is still my favorite with regards to the fundamentals of creating naturalistic movement.
More concise, less self-indulgent, and less bulky than either Richard Williams' "Animator's Survival Kit" or Frank and Ollie's "Illusion of Life", Whitaker and Halas' "Timing for Animation" allowed me to advance in my knowledge of timing charts and the creation of believable, naturalistic movement more efficiently than either of those two venerable books. While I tend to agree with reviewers who question the book's price, the no-nonsense explanations it contains provide a solid base from which an animator can embark upon further exploration without being too tied to a particular guru's insights.
A Must.......2007-05-13
This book is simply a must have for animators. It's very clear written and has great examples, I consider it a must just as the two masterpieces "Illusion of Life" and "Animation Survival Kit". Being about the timing I think it works great not only for traditional animators but also for CGI one (like I am).
Amazing animation book.......2007-02-23
This book is an essential to have for any animator. It communicates very clearly the basic principles of animation which is vital for either 2D or 3D animation. If you want to be serious about this field you should buy this book. Also contains very good animated cycles and explains how they work. I actually bought it before it was in print in the USA and cost me a nice deal of money.
Book Description
From the early "pepperbox" pistol to the AK-47 and Skorpion of modern times this guide illustrates and describes hundreds of military and civilian pistols and long arms of the past two centuries. Each weapon is illustrated in a full-color profile with statistical information on length, weight, caliber, and muzzle velocity, with history, manufacture and any important factors in its operation and use.
Customer Reviews:
Women like guns too.......2007-04-18
I found this a really stunning intro into the world of guns and gunsmithing. Everything is completely clear, and the excellent illustrations mean that even the non-expert can really enjoy the book andget the most from the author's clear and concise information. I would certainly recommend the book to anyone with an interest inthis field.
An "Almost" Fantastic Book..........2006-09-19
This is a VERY comprehensive book which runs the gamut from early firearms up to and including (most of) the modern arms found today in sport or military usage. The photos are first rate, as are the descriptives at the beginning of each chapter.
I can overlook the typos (frequent as they might be) in favor of the sheer history of featured weapons, such as the guns of the old west, and the civil war era.
The book is also sectioned off into pistols/revolvers, rifles/shotguns, submachine guns, light machine guns, and heavy machine guns.
Most every country that manufactures these firearms is covered, although some glaring omissions are present, most notably the Walther P99 auto pistol. Since this volume came out in 2000, it would defy logic that this weapon would NOT be included, since it's appearance in 1998-1999.
Still, this is a nice addition to ANY coffee table (or bookshelf), and is well worth the paper it's printed on.
Poor.......2004-05-10
Despite having good descriptions, the book does not contain enough modern guns, and lists too many ancient ones. For example, there is not a single mention of a Glock handgun in the whole book! Worthless, in my opinion.
Great Book!.......2003-05-30
Great illustrated text of the history and details of famous firearms. Although this is not an all inclusive list of firearms it has all of the historical as well as technical innovative firearms of the world, my only complaint is its grouping of firearms by country. This is now one of my favorite books to add to my more technical books on firearms.
Chock Full of Great Pictures...and Typos.......2003-04-26
Well I'm pretty neutral on this book. It features many good pictures of good guns, inlcluding some that I've never seen (the Terry Pattern Carbine, Kuntz Air Rifle, and Whitney-Burgess Carbine stick out). However, it has more typos and misplaced photos than you can imagine! Two examples are the editor not knowing how to spell the "Keene" part of the Remington-Keene Rifle and placing the bizarre-looking Webley-Fosbery Semiautomatic Revolver's photo on the description of the conventional Webley & Scott Mark V's description (the weapon is clearly stamped "Webley-Fosbery", too). There are also errors in the statistics of the weapons, but these are probably due to typos more than factual mistakes. The descritions, in some cases, are also too scant (the aforementioned Kuntz Air Rifle needs a little more and the book fails to mention the famous Ferguson Rifle, though many of the photos appear to be taken at the West Point Museum, which has a Ferguson Rifle on display). In summary, if you like over 1,000 gun photos, then get this book. If you don't like over 1,000 typos, then don't get this book.
Book Description
If not for the events of 1759, the entire history of the world would have been different. Called the "Year of Victories," 1759 was the fourth year of the Seven Years, or the French-and-Indian War and defeat of the French not only paved the way for the global hegemony of the English language but also made the emergence of the United States possible. Guiding us through England's conquests (and often extremely narrow victories) in India, North America, and the Caribbean, Frank McLynn (Wagons West) controversially suggests that the birth of the great British Empire was more a result of luck than of rigorous planning. Along with stirring depictions of the two greatest battles of 1759, Quebec and Quiberon, McLynn includes anecdotes of the intellectual and cultural leaders of the day—Swedenborg, Hume, Voltaire—and interweaves primary sources, ranging from material in the Vatican archives to oral histories of Native Americans, in a brilliant chronicle of a pivotal year in world history.
Customer Reviews:
A great start to an importnat year.......2006-12-20
The seven years war changed the face of the world. The year 1759 was decisive in the conflict of the war and established Britain's naval supremacy from America to India. Frank McLynn does an excellent job in all of his books explaining the context of the times. He clearly outlays how the British Empire developed. The naval battles are some of the most important in history and he explains the new tactics of the British navy. He also begins to show how this war will lead to American independence. This book is NOT the definitive book on the war and for that see Crucible of War by Fred Anderson.
Brilliant history.......2006-06-16
A prior reviewer says that he is "disappointed" with this book and that the author "can't even write a simple declarative sentence." What I wonder is, from what correspondence course did the reviewer get his degree? More disturbing is how he found 24 people to agree with him. Those ratings must have come from a reluctant class assigned to read this book by some misguided middle school teacher. The book is erudite, exhaustively researched, and enlightening in its conclusions about how Britain became the greatest power in the world. It is a wonderfully well-written book that I would highly recommend to any literate person.
Good thesis, only an OK read........2006-04-12
I'm sure if you're reading my review you've seen others praising McLynn's work and other bashing him for his classical allusions and five dollar words. The truth is "1759" falls somewhere in the middle of the two. But first I think it's important to point out that McLynn is attempting to write in a 19th century style. As there are no footnotes and the quotation marks used are the single instead of the double. At least that's the conclusion I come to.
First with the bad. While McLynn's use of excessively obscure definitions can be frustrating it is refreshing to see not see the word "big" in a history text. The maps are also very poor. He might have even drawn them himself, I have no idea, but they are really pretty awful. Finally, -though I'm sure this was done on purpose- there are no footnotes and the bibliography is pretty sparse.
Now onto the good. I really like McLynn's thesis in that he goes beyond saying it was just a world war. He tries to prove, and I think he does, that the year 1759 completely changed world history and people's perception of what an empire could be. I also enjoyed his prefaces to each dealing especially the ones dealing with art, music, literature and famous personages. They really added to the overall picture that 1759 was truly a year that changed the world.
Ok now that I've rambled on a bit, I guess I would have to say that I can't really recommend this book to the casual history reader. McLynn's allusions are too vague and his use of SAT words does become annoying. I would therefore recommend Fred Anderson's excellent "Crucible of War" or for a North American perspective William M. Fowler's "Empires at War". While McLynn's book does have its merits its simply too much of a pain in the butt to enjoy reading.
Unfortunate erudition..........2006-02-02
It has been a long time since I have had to read a book with a dictionary and an atlas beside me. Other reviewers have felt that the author was showing off. My sense is that he may have had a classical British education where references to Greek and Roman mythology and the ability to read French fluently are more normative. This is not so for even the well educated American reader of history. While it may be a true scholastic achievement to use the word uxoriousness in a sentence, wouldn't shrewish have done? Or embezzelment instead of defalcation? The complexity of the language interfered with the flow of the narrative.
I also heartily agree with the reviewer who faulted this book for the lack of and inaccuracy of maps. Often place names were mentioned in the text that were not found on the few maps included in the book--essentially one for every theatre of war covered. The scale of the maps was very misleading; one could think that the Connecticut River, the St. Lawrence, and Lakes George and Champlain were neighbors, rather than a multi-day tour of northern New England. I wondered whether McLynn had ever visited the geography he wrote about--or for that matter, checked his maps against his text.
That all said, I think McLynn makes his point about this being a crucial year in history, and I am willing to give him some slack for his desire to write two books in one... a brief history of the thought of the times, and a work of narrative history. I wonder whether they would have made two better books if done separately, though.
Unfortunately weak.......2006-01-01
The book needed competent editing. It is comprehensive and erudite, but hard to read. I'm not put off by the vocabulary or the French, but the author offers too much detail that really doesn't flesh out his theme. Additionally, the book suffers terribly from an absence of maps and battle illustrations. The written descriptions of engagements and battle plans need a lot of help. Additionally, the writer speaks often of the St. Charles River, but the map that should show it is missing the label on the line that I think is the St. Charles River. Overall, the book is very weak in the matter of illustrative material. The book is also unbalanced in its choice of materials to emphasize. The entire chapter on Robert's Raiders seems superfluous, and again so badly illustrated that one cannot follow what is happening unless one is already entirely intimate with local geography. For a really superb, lucid treatment of a historial event, I really like Hansen's recent, absolutely brilliant work on the Peloponnesian War. I also enjoyed another recent work on the influence of the Royal Navy in shaping the modern world. Both of these latter books are much better examples of written history than 1759.
