Working Over Time.......2003-11-03
If you've ever worked in a "support" capacity --- as a secretary or an administrative assistant --- this book is a MUST read! Extremely well-written and entertaining. The author chronicles her "real life" adventures as an assistant to management with humor, dramatic flair, and a razor-sharp wit. Bad (as in incompetent) bosses, beware! Ms. Carroll has your number and if you're not careful, you'll be disconnected. The appeal of this book is universal....no matter what your profession. I ended up reading far into the night -- I simply could not put it down. I laughed, I cried, and in the end cheered the author for her ultimate success in the workplace and in life. Memo to readers everywhere: Buy this book and be prepared to thoroughly enjoy it. It might not change your life, but it will make your job description a lot more fun!

A VERY INTERESTING BOOK.......2002-11-09
THIS IS A VERY NICE BOOK TO READ. I DIDN'T KNOW BIRDIE PERSONALLY SO I CAN'T COMMENT ON WHETHER HE WROTE THIS OR NOT. BUT I AM FROM CLEVELAND, AND REMEMBER HIM AS MANAGER DURING THE MIDDLE 1960'S. HE DID A GOOD JOB AND WAS WELL RESPECTED BY THE PLAYERS AND MEDIA. I ENJOYED THIS TALE OF HIS LIFE IN AND OUT OF BASEBALL. I AGREE WITH ANOTHER REVIEWER THAT I THINK MORE TIME WAS NEEDED ON HIS MANAGING CAREER. ALSO I WOULD HAVE RATED THIS 5 STARS IF THIS BOOK WAS LONGER. BUT VERY WELL DONE AND QUITE INTERESTING.
VERY RECOMMENDED.
Catch this Birdie.......2002-07-29
Unlike a couple of other reviewers (....), I never knew Birdie, and cannot attest whether these pages seem written by the real man. What does stand out, however, is that any fan of baseball before the present - swing for the fences, no strategy needed - era will enjoy this book. James Morrison has culled many, many delicious stories from Birdie's diaries. Some stories are not brand new to baseball literature, but Birdie's viewpoint on them is worthwhile. Except for some quotes using swear words, I cannot see what Birdie's friends can object to here. The player-manager-scout's humanity and delightful humor ring out on every page. Perhaps the best chapter reviews player-umpire relations in the "old days," but the anecdotes throughout make it hard not to read out loud to others.
My only regret is that short space was given to Birdie's managing years. I suspect he was too busy then to post lengthy diary entries. Perhaps Birdie would have edited the finished product differently, had he lived, but this book will stand out with that of his Tiger teammate, Elden Auker's, as one of the best books on baseball from the '30s through the 50s.
I couldn't agree more.......2002-05-11
...I knew Birdie well and know a lot of people who also knew Birdie well and none of us believe that Birdie authored this book. The man we all knew is not represented by the words on these pages. For example, Birdie wrote an article titled, "I'd Rather Catch". This was written by Birdie himself and Birdie spoke about it many times. In the article he praised Newhouser. Having known the man, I never heard him ever criticize another player. On the contrary, he was one of baseball's biggest fans. And he most certainly did not talk like the blue collar, swaggering, swearing person represented on these pages. This is a book published many years after his death. I would keep that in mind as the pages are turned.
Birdie Speaks His Mind.......2002-05-05
Birdie Tebbetts' career in baseball covered nearly his entire life and he expresses his opinions on a number of things, oftentimes in strong terms. A New England native Birdie says his best years in baseball were with the Boston Red Sox. After having spent a number of years in Detroit with the Tigers, Birdie says he was booed out of Detroit. Tebbetts says pitcher Hal Newhouser of the Tigers begged his way into the Hall of Fame. Newhouser, he says, had his best years when the stars were off fighting WWII. Could this be sour grapes for his not being in the Hall of Fame himself? As an executive for the Milwaukee Braves during the 1960's Birdie says it was a job he detested. Such things as deciding on a hospitalization plan for the groundscrew and who is to get the contract for paving the parking lot at County Stadium were meetings he had to sit in on. He does provide us with some interesting tidbits in regard to what scouts look for in baseball prospects. I may be wrong, but at times Birdie seems to come across as a braggert. I also didn't feel it was necessary for him to be so flippant in using God's name in vain so many times.
Not the Birdie I knew.......2002-03-31
Birdie was a great storyteller. This book was not written with Birdie's sense of humor, intelligence, or respect for the people in the baseball industry. I knew him well and do not believe that he wrote it. Unfortunately, since he died three years before he supposedly wrote this book, we can't hear his side of the story. This book is just not worth the paper it's printed on.

Book Description
This compelling book brings together physicians, artists, and scholars of film, literature, philosophy, art, and politics to discuss the representation of the corpse in Western culture. Spanning a timeline from the Renaissance to the present, these essays introduce readers to a modern autopsy, a public execution and dissection in seventeenth-century England, the genre of postmortem photography, the corpse as artist’s model, images of dead women in such popular films as Copycat and The Silence of the Lambs, and post-mortem scenes in the works of Flaubert, Balzac, Andres Serrano, and others.
Book Description
This book describes in detail many of the AI techniques used in modern computer games, explicity shows how to implement these practical techniques within the framework of several game developers with a practical foundation to game AI.
Customer Reviews:
Misleading Title.......2007-09-13
Misleading Title
This book has a misleading title. I think this book should be called "Fundamentals of Game Development" instead of Programming Game AI by Example. Sure the book delivers on what it promises, as so many reviewers have already mentioned, but I believe that his book teaches you something that no other book that at least I am aware of teaches - good software practices coupled with actual game development.
There are dozens of books available in the market today claiming to teach you Game Architecture. I will not name the exact titles of such books but you know what I am talking about. I have read so many such books only to find myself becoming a graphics programmer. Not that I didn't want to become a graphics programmer, but even after learning all that stuff, there was "something" missing. That something turns out to be design patterns related to game development. In other words, how to combine various game components together into a working game. The last place I expected to learn it in such an elegant and easy to understand manner was in an AI book.
It's my sincere belief that this is the best book on game development available in the market. Read that again, not just AI but Game Development. Thats right, no matter which of the numerous disciplines of game development you wish to specialize in, no matter which platform or technologies you want to develop for, you need this book. Period.
The book starts off with the most relevant mathematics chapter that I have found in any game development book. Maybe I'm stupid, but this was the only book that explained to me what a radian was! The lesson on vectors presented many useful examples that are bread and butter of game development but for some reasons are ignored by mainstream game development books. For example, finding out whether a game agent is in front of the player of behind him.
Next, it teaches you the "state design pattern". To me this chapter alone is the entire cost of the book itself. I had never seen this discussed in any game development books. I believe this should be in the appendix of each book that claims to teach game development. Instead, almost all entry level game development books have a C++ primer, but never a primer on topics like the state design pattern or UML. In one appendix this book with teach you all the UML you need to get started. Did I mention the "telegram" pattern? Again, so many "beautiful" books claiming to teach you game architecture only end up teaching you graphics programming and using some API in general. This is the first book I have come across that taught this design pattern. Strange, given the fact that you cannot make a game without a robust HSM and some way of sending messages.
Then it goes on to teach you how to create autonomous game agents. Whether you are into AI or not, this is something you need to know. But what I appreciated most about this chapter was the application of state machines and how physics is implemented in a game at an architectural level. Most books uses procedural approach when to comes to actual implementation. This book uses good object oriented techniques to show you how forces on an agent are accumulated and how it gets translated to the agent's movement.
While I was still amazed how much money I wasted trying to learn how things are put together, this book surprised me with a complete mini soccer game! Now, I learned more about game development from this single chapter than I had from reading complete so called game programming books.
Each and every chapter in this book is a gem. If you are new to game development, then this book will provide you with the right direction to begin your career. If you already have read so many game programming books in the hope of making an actual game but were never able to do so then this book will seal the deal.
To cut a long story short, the book also delves into graph theory, scripting and other material topics such as fuzzy logic that you can easily read from the index of the author's website.
Chapter 7 of this book teaches you how to create the AI of a FPS. Rest assured, you will end up learning more from this chapter than you initially sighed for. And you wont be disappointed. One way to think of this chapter is not an AI simulation, but the framework of an entire FPS game! Thats right, it contains everything except the graphics engine, sound engine etc. You can plug a 3D engine with it, along with other missing libraries and get a 3D game! Other books take a complete opposite approach. They go into great details as to how to create various game libraries and in the end slap you with a pathetic design to hang them on to. After reading this book, all the other game programming books will make sense.
The only qualm I have with this book is that the author has not upgraded the scripting code on his web site. This book teaches you how to integrate Lua into your game engine. Since the publication of this book, Lua has been changed dramatically. Getting Lua, Luabind and Boost to work together was a nightmare, which I am still not able to do successfully. So now I am integrating python into my game. This is when you try to integrate their latest versions. They will work if you stick to the older ones though. But this does not render this chapter useless as you will still learn a lot from it.
If you are beginning game programming, or have given it up in frustration, this book will get you back in the game! If I am asked to name one game development book that I want to suggest to a newbie (who knows C++), this is it. Pick it up with your eyes closed. You wont regret it.
Wish i could spend more time on it..........2007-08-15
Likes:
- How the author only deals with AI game programming and doesn't put in a lot of fluff
- The broad range of topics the book covers
- The use of actual 2D examples and an actual game "Raven"
Dislikes:
- Use of "helper" files that have no explanation in the book (some are explained in previous chapters but the author should have included an appendix to list and explain all the files in the common directory)
- The code explanation is shallow when you consider the fact that the author neglects to tell you about the, many and crucial, other files that are needed to run the program.
- The actual code that can be downloaded from the web site needs a lot of tweaking before it even works (you should just be able to unzip it and run it).
- Chapter 3 and how the author only includes the source code for a final all encompassing program instead of smaller easier to understand projects.
- If you don't know Win32GDI then learn because the book uses it extensively to output to the screen, and that can interfere with understanding the actual meat of the program.
Summary:
If you are going to buy this book make sure you have a lot of time on your hands to look through the source code, tweak it, and pull it apart. The book itself just doesn't give enough explanation to allow a person to create their own version of the concepts without digging through the source code. Overall I would recommend the book to people with an intermediate knowledge of C++ and have very good 2D math skills. This book is a fine overview of major topics in game AI but is sorely lacking (add another 100 pgs of quality explanation on topics). It would probably be necessary to buy other books that are more specific in their focus.
Immensely Useful.......2007-06-13
This book is simply outstanding. The material is crystal clear, direct to the point, and so easy to understand that my 10 year old son is writing state machines in Visual Basic. Although the code is C++ I had no trouble translating it to Objective-C for my use. I am quite impressed at how the author makes such high-level concepts so easy to understand. A must have for every game programmer.
Best book about AI around..........2007-04-24
If you are like me, who wants to get the job done, this book is just perfect!
With lots of examples, this book is stuffed with clever solutions for pratical problems you stumble upon when developing average games. There is even a simple soccer game example.
After you read this book, I'm pretty sure you will obtain solid notions about artificial intelligence for games.
It saved my life.......2007-03-25
I had a problem programming a NPC car pilot and I found the solution inside this amazing book! I'm sure you'll find the solution for your problem as well!!
Product Description
Like a ghost returning, the modern state of Israel is a thoroughly astonishing reality. Built on the ruins of ancient cities and villages, Israel today is a thriving democracy, in spite of the relentless terror war waged against it by radical Islamic groups. Knesset member Binyamin Benny Elon is a moral voice in Israels government, and this new book is certain to find a wide audience among his countrys advocates, like Americas evangelicals. A brilliant mixture of Israels current political and security situation, contrasted with its ancient biblical heritage, makes Gods Covenant with Israel an irresistible book. Filled with color photos and maps that explain Israels status in clear detail, the book represents Elons heart. Determined to hold off his nations enemies by speaking the truth, Elon, who served two terms as Israels minister of tourism, is a bold spokesman for the Jewish state.

Religious Zionism's vision.......2006-04-12
Benny Alon has been in past years one of the most courageous political leaders in Israel. I personally witnessed his courage when in a demonstration against the disastrous Oslo agreement he marched forward against a hostile mounted police force.
He is currently the leader of the Echud - Leumi party.
As a religious Zionist he believes in the Biblical promise to the people of Israel. And he has proposed a peace plan by which the greatest share of the Arabs of Judea and Samaria are connected politically with Jordan.
He is a strong visionary leader , and his proposal for the future of Israel is close to the one given by the Bible.
Classic!.......2005-10-07
This is a must read for anyone that is interested in the Middle East in general and Israel in specific.
Probably not the most accepted political view, but in order to gain insight into how this region works, a nessasary one to study.
This member of Knesset is one of the up and coming power-brokers in Israel, read what he has to say and you'll come out enlightened to a new perspective.

Yes, we are Guilty! We are guilty of being Christian Zionists. We are guilty of trying the best we knew at the time to identify with the Jewish people. We are guilty of having a passion for activating God's covenant of love for His treasured possession. We are guilty of loving Israel in a way that only dimly reflects God's eternal love for them. We are guilty of weeping over the Land and people as Jesus did. This book is our heartfelt letter of love to Israel; we are Christians for Israel!"
Customer Reviews:
A must read for both Christians and Jews.......2006-06-13
"Guilty!" is a wonderful, unique book. It is a combined autobiography of two outstanding people - Brigadier General Dr. James Hutchens and his wife Patty, a known artist. As an autobiography it is written with great sensitivity and humor allowing perceptive readers to identify with the authors. James Hutchens describes life from his days in Wheaton college, where he met his wife Patty, then his outstanding service in Viet Nam as the Chaplain of the famous 173rd Airborne Brigade and later with the Green Berets, his doctoral studies at Fuller Seminary, his dramatic adventures during his two years stay in Israel, his service at the Pentagon during the Gulf War up and through the beginning of the current invasion of Iraq, while being the pastor of Christ Church of Arlington for more than 20 years, and ending with his current role as President of Christians for Israel USA and publisher of The Jerusalem Connection International, a magazine expounding the ideas of Christian Zionism.
What makes this book unique is the description of the personal struggle and conceptual development of perceiving and loving Judaism and Zionism by a deeply believing, devout Christian. In parallel to other current thoughtful Christian leaders, including John Paul II (who is not referred to in this book), Hutchens considers Judaism to be the root of Christianity. He bases his convictions on his study of early Christianity, when most followers of Jesus were Jews. To prove this point and emulate the Early Christians James and Patty Hutchens tried to convert to Judaism without giving up their belief in Jesus. They may be unique or perhaps among the very few Christians to take this dramatic symbolic step, which for them seemed natural. This ended up in failure when the Israeli Supreme Court rejected their conversion and the consequent appeal to rightfully belong to the Jewish people. This personal ideological blow permeates this autobiography.
That failure to emulated early Christianity did not diminish the Hutchens' love for the Jewish people and the appreciation of the Jewish heritage, as manifested in his current activities in support of the State of Israel.
This is also an autobiography of patty Hutchens. Being part of an exceptionally harmonious couple, Patty has shared her husband's convictions, aspirations and frustrations and expressed her perspective in a lively, poignant manner.
This book will appeal to several audiences. Those who are looking for a model of a loving, mutually supportive couple of two intellectuals, will find this short autobiography inspiring. Those who are looking for a model of genuine believers in God and His guidance will find here lots of encouragement. Christians who wonder about their relationship to Jews and Judaism will find here competing arguments against the "Replacement Theology," which has been the origin of misojudaism (hatred of Judaism, aka "anti-Semitism"). Finally, Jews who wonder about Christian Zionism, currently espoused by the Protestant Evangelic movement, will find in this book an answer to their doubts and suspicions.
In brief, "Guilty!" is a "must-read" for both Christian and Jews.
Book Description
This collective memoir-a mosaic of individual diaries, journals, and accounts-follows the fate of the Warsaw Jews from the first bombardments of the Polish capital to the razing of the Jewish district: the frantic exchange of apartments as the walls first go up; the daily battle against starvation and disease; the moral ambiguities confronting Jewish bureaucracies under Nazi rule; the ingenuity of smugglers; and the acts of resistance. Stunning in their immediacy, these urgent accounts challenge us to imagine the unimaginable.

Personal Accounts from Hell.......2004-02-05
How can one describe the indescribable? In the last several years, I have read maybe a dozen and a half books on the Shoah and have been greatly impressed by many if not all of them. This narrative though, I feel, is head and shoulders above all of the other personal accounts that I have read thus far. Words to Outlive Us is a fascinating read. This, I feel, can be attributed to three things: the structure of the book(it is divided into six chapters each dealing with a particular aspect of life and death inside the Ghetto), the fascinating and in many cases heartbreaking quality of the accounts and finally, the sheer quantity of unique individual accounts. . While none of these components of the book are unique individually, put together they create an unsurpassed narrative of those Jews, who for no other reason than the fact they were Jews, suffered under the Nazis and in many cases, their Polish neighbors. This compilation is definitely greater than the sum of its parts. It is even more amazing when one takes into account the the fact that many of the narratives were actually penned during the events these individuals were living through and for that matter the immense danger that these survivors placed themselves in simply by writing of their experiences as Jews during the Nazi occupation of Poland.
Particularly poignant I felt, were the chapters on the institutions of the Ghetto, the resistance and liberation. Through these accounts the reader is seeing day to day life and tragedies as if he or she is witnessing them personally. The reader is a witness to both the greatest acts of kindness and the most horrific acts of violence which human beings are capable of. This is, I believe, the greatest testament to the power of this collection of personal stories. My only disappointment in this book was that it wasn't double it's 440 pages.
How some fought back and why others could or would not.......2003-05-04
So often, we read accounts of the Shoah afer the fact. Not to diminish their power, but primary testimony as the events happened, understandably a rarer extant survival, speaks directly and eloquently with a visceral power. The accounts here, by a cross-section of thoughtful, self-deprecating, agonized, and bewildered observers, show why those in the ghetto were so diminished and demoralized.
Years of abuse, mental and physical, years of starving and disease and uncertainty wreaked havoc on the Jews in Warsaw. Reading these accounts, you understand how awful were the limited choices between giving in and holding out could both be. Also, what here emerges more fully is the extent to which Jews were exploited with the hopes of work permits, resettlement, visas, and hush money by informers, turncoats, bosses, and those willing or forced to collaborate. The constant anxiety underscores the bodily suffering of the ghetto's inhabitants.
Revealed here are the predicaments hundreds of thousands of people like you and me faced, nearly half-a-million crowded into an area the size of Central Park. What often has been distorted into kitsch or melodrama in later re-creations in its original context remains unforgettably eloquent.
For people who want to understand the Holocaust.......2003-04-17
I read this book after I watched the movie "The Pianist". The true accounts in this book shocked and moved me. By combining with the visual impact from the movie, I am able to relate what I read with what I watched from the movie. After reading the book, I admired the courage, the-will-to-survive, and the brilliance of the Jewish people. I suggest to people who are interested to know what happened in the Warsaw Ghetto, but who has no such background on the holocaust, watched the movie first, then read this book. It is not a dry history book. The acccounts were written by people who have superb writing skill, though they might not know themselves.

Though the Berlin Wall has fallen, we find ourselves still struggling with an even older enemy in the eternal Common Cold War. Virologist Dorothy H. Crawford has studied the link between Epstein-Barr virus and human cancer for years, and she casts a wary eye through the electron microscope to check up on them and report on our strange and occasionally deadly symbiosis in The Invisible Enemy.
This slim book, scholarly but accessible, examines these barely living (or unliving, depending on whom you ask) gene packages with a strong emphasis on their disease-causing antics and the intellectual heroics of the various campaigns of eradication and control humans have waged for centuries. Though biological relativists might cringe occasionally at Crawford's dogged humanocentrism, few of them would really pine for the days of smallpox or embrace the raging HIV pandemic if pressed. Crawford looks at the wake of devastation left by these two viruses as well as her own favorite subject, which is strongly implicated in the formation of many cancers. Going a bit farther afield, she explains the weird behavior of the nongenetic reproduction of prions that cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy; though these scary proteins aren't viruses by any definition, their behavior is similar enough to warrant inclusion. The Invisible Enemy, calmer than its title would suggest, provokes a sense of optimism in the reader. Though the war might last forever, we can hope for fewer and fewer casualties as the years go by. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Viruses are disarmingly small and simple. None the less, the smallpox virus killed over 300 million people in the 20th century prior to its eradication in 1980. The AIDS virus, HIV, is now the single most common cause of death in Africa. In recent years, the outbreaks of several lethal viruses such as Ebola and hanta virus have caused great public concern. In her fascinating and vividly written book, Dorothy Crawford describes all aspects of the natural history of these deadly parasites, explaining how they differ from other microorganisms. She looks at the havoc viruses have caused in the past, where they have come from, and the detective work involved in uncovering them. Finally, she considers whether a new virus could potentially wipe out the human race. This is an informative and highly readable book, which will be read by all those seeking a deeper understanding of these minute but remarkably efficient killers.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding viruses.......2007-10-17
"The Invisble Enemy" is a very good overview of the world of viruses. Virologist Dorothy H. Crawford has written a book that is scientific, but it is also interesting, enjoyable, and very readable. In fact, I became so immersed while reading the book that I felt that I was reading a historical novel and not a book on the science of viruses. But that is what is so enjoyable about this book - Ms. Crawford weaves together interesting tales, scientific data and her thoughts on viruses in a way that helped me to understand these primitive proteins and their impact on the history and evolution of the human race.
Throughout the book there is information about the history of a variety of killer viruses such as yellow fever and polio and the vaccines that were developed to eradicate them. There is also information about the origins of HIV - how HIV infects a cell and the ways that HIV drugs interfere with the replication process. Also information is included on hepatitis A, hepatitis B and a little information on hepatitis C. There is also an overview of the emerging killer viruses such as ebola, hanta virus, and the bird flu.
After reading this book I came away with a better understanding of viruses and their remarkable ability to survive.
Nice book.......2006-03-07
This is a nice book about viruses. The book is slightly technical, but reading it while able to access wikipedia should do it, if you want to understand each detail.
Recently I came across a theory came which says that viruses played a crucial role in the evolution of humans. After reading this book the above theory made sense to me.
amazing.......2005-06-22
I assumed this would be another text book style read consisting of sterile, bare bones info. I was very pleasantly surprised. This book is increadible. It reads like a novel and yet the info is present in every sentence. The author is clearly beyond knowledgable about the topic. I would recommend this book to anyone . Truely amazing!
Truly Infectious!.......2001-03-19
"The Invisible Enemy" offers a thorough and useful approach to virology without using excessive amounts of medical and scientific jargon. It is especially useful to those of us who have experienced a lapse in time since studying formal virology or medical microbiology. This book is an entertaining overview of several of the more recent discoveries in the field of virological infectious disease. It should be of interest to any student of the physical sciences, or researchers/practicioners of the medicinal craft.
