Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-07-27
Vince Lombardi Jr. brings to the forefront his father's winning formula for success in leadership and everyday life. While many examples are spoken of in terms of football, the key elements that are always there is teamwork, teambuilding and producing results. This book will benefit anyone who wants to raise the bar in their personal or professional life. I particularly liked the reoccurring idea of running the drill over and over again until it becomes second nature. I also liked how Lombardi never discriminated against anyone but everyone was judged on their ability to produce results. Lombardi also brings to the forefront that the leader's job is never secure he or she must always keep producing results.
Last but not least, he talks in length about rejuvinating activities that can help one stay focused.
It's amazing that no matter how far advanced we get socially and technologically, the core of it all are the basic fundamental principles that our parents and grandparents taught us; Dedication, Hard Work, Loyalty and Honor.
In today's society where everything fundamental is under brutal attack, it's nice to read a book to where good, wholesome principles are once again proven to be the best way to success.
Great Book About Ethics.......2007-05-07
Like every book about leadership, you take what you think applies and leave the rest, but this book truly speaks about the ethics and moral values that people forget. Lombardi Jr. uses his father's words to illustrate that he believed that hard work and sacrifice are the ways to success. If you admired Lombardi and his style of leadership I think you will find this book very interesting.
Beware of what you are buying.......2006-09-17
This is not a reflection on the book itself, it is on the confusing information being presented. YOU MAY NOT BE BUYING THE FULL SIZE BOOK. I expected to get the full size 278 page book advertized. Instead I received a 109 page large print 2" X 2" miniature. The advertising on Amazon's page isn't very clear so be sure to ask the seller what you will get before you purchase.
A Keeper.......2005-03-07
To be honest, it's been a while since I've read this book, so I don't remember all the details . . . . Nonetheless, it seems that "What it Takes" is an accurate and exciting portrayal of Vince Lombardi and the reasons behind his success.
Even Teens will learn from this.......2002-10-30
I am 16 years old and I play on my high schools varsity baseball team. I feel this book has helped my outlook on my sports career, because some of his quotes are so true. Everytime I wake up at 5:30 to weightlift before school I remind myself "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender." Just reading this book made me realize what it really takes to be #1. You can't be a sissy, you have to work for what you want. Any athlete who needs something to motivate them should read this book.
Book Description
Published to widespread critical acclaim, Vince has been called: "the definitive biography" of an American legend. With stunning revelations and anecdotes, Vince Lombardi's life is pieced together with painstaking care in research, detail, and historical accuracy. Based on more than two hundred interviews, including those who played with him and against him, from his early coaching days at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey to West Point, the New York Giants, and his championship seasons with the Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins. Drawing upon unpublished Lombardi family papers, Vince clarifies the thirty years of mystery and contradiction that have swirled around the legend of Vince Lombardi.
Vince goes beyond the sidelines to reveal the true character of Lombardi. He was dedicated and narrow, intelligent and dogmatic, self-restrained yet emotional, abusive yet apologetic. His moods could swing from deep gloom to soaring exuberance in seconds. He was compassionate, kind, charitable. He could also be gripped by uncontrollable anger. Above all, Vince paints a portrait of a very human man who committed his life to winning.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough, well-researched bio of Lombardi.......1999-07-01
This is a very good book, but not a great one. Vince does well describing Lombardi through his actions and the impact he had on those around him, especially his former players. Everything is written in a clear and easily understood manner, especially his paradoxical nature.
However, it does not clear my threshold as a great book. A great book would have involved me not as a viewer from afar, but as a fly in the locker room. Since O'Brien did not play for Lombardi, I was hoping for more insight of how his players felt. I never got emotional reading this book, and emotion is a large part of what Lombardi was about.
Basically, it reads like an exquisitely written research paper.
Book Description
Of all the great National Football League coaches, none have earned the level of respect and reputation that Vince Lombardi merited during his tenure as head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Both feared and loved by players and peers, Lombardi coached the Packers to five NFL Championships and victories in the first two Super Bowls ever played. Over ten seasons, his Green Bay teams compiled a remarkable 98-30-4 record, although it was Lombardi's relentless, uncompromising tactics and values that defined him and his career more than the victories could by themselves.
I Remember Vince Lombardi takes readers back to bygone era when professional football was a game of guts, grit and spit, not the corporate, dollar-driven entertainment vehicle that it is today. Lombardi embodied greatness, and he demanded it from his staff and players. In this book, dozens of people familiar with Lombardi, many of them personal acquaintances, talk about him in their own words. Former players, assistant coaches, opponents, and league officials are among the people whose memories reveal Lombardi as the genuine legend he was, on and off the field.
Among the many memorable events and circumstances included in I Remember Vince Lombardi are his days as an assistant coach with the New York Giants and colleague Tom Landry, his relationship with players and assistants, the unforgettable "Ice Bowl" NFL title game of 1966, his two Super Bowl victories, his sudden departure from the Packers, and his short-lived position as coach of the Washington Redskins. Many aspects of Lombardi's personal and professional life are covered in this book, offering a new and refreshing look at one of football's greatest icons.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing Rehash.......2002-02-16
This book is simply a rehash of quite a bit of past recollections of the great Vince Lombardi that are culled from previous works. Anyone who is a Lombardi affecionado will learn very little that is new. Also, in several passages of recollections there are no mention of Lombardi at all. Strange to say the least. Disappointing book. I guess all there is to be remembered about Vince has been said and done.

comprehensive explanation.......2007-02-02
Perkins offers us a deep explanation of how RTP can handle real time audio and, more importantly, video across a standard Internet connection. RTP has now been around for some 10 years, and has been extensively built out, based on practical feedback from its earlier usages.
As you might expect, much of the text concerns the packet formats used in RTP. There are subsidiary protocols within RTP, like its control protocol. Naturally, these are explained, as they are a necessary part of the overall RTP.
Some chapters delve into specific timing issues. One, called lip synchronisation, refers to the difficulty of synchronising the audio and video portions of a video signal. Other chapters discuss how to conceal lost video packets. Error concealment is a very practical necessity in this field.
a must-have book if you are in this area.......2004-12-02
The author is an expert in RTP/RTCP area, and this book is a must-have reference if you are working on this area or interested in . inlcuding VoIP/Videoconferencing, Streaming. The book presents the all technical aspects of RTP/RTCP precisely and correctly.
Excellent material - well presented.......2004-01-17
Colin Perkins is obviously well regarded in the area of RTP with many papers and research to his credit. This book is a very thorough and readable text on RTP. All aspects of RTP are covered in sufficient depth. The only thing that would have improved it would have been access to code. At various sections in the book he refers to an RTP stack that he has written. If this were made available as part of the book it would have been a killer combination.
If I lost this book, I'd buy another one!

A "must-have" guide for history majors and a useful quick-check resource for professional historians, highly recommended........2007-07-08
Written by Robert C. Williams (Vail Professor of History and Dean of Faculty Emeritus, Davidson College) The Historian's Toolbox: A Student's Guide to the Theory and Craft of History is a reader-friendly guide for aspiring historians of all skill and experience levels. Now in an updated second edition with five new chapters, The Historian's Toolbox covers everything from how to choose a good history topic and write a solid paper, to evaluating primary, secondary, and tertiary historical sources, to format guidelines for credits and acknowledgments, to historical narrative as compared to interpretation or speculation, to even the potentials and abuses of the user-modified website Wikipedia. A "must-have" guide for history majors and a useful quick-check resource for professional historians, highly recommended.
Grand theory and nuts-and-bolts.......2003-07-09
Williams gives instructors and students of history two books in one. Part one is a quick look at some of the big ideas and controversies of the profession. These short chapters on such topics as metahistory and anti-history should provide great fodder for class discussions. Part two on "the tools of history" offers good guidance on researching, writing, and thinking about history. Again, short, provocative chapters should stimulate students to think and talk about the joys and difficulties of doing quality history. I'll assign the book to my next class on historical research and writing. With this book as a guide, students will not write just another term paper; they'll know how to craft a livelier, deeper, and more revealing interpretation of the past.

Book Description
An expert examination of the most perplexing and still unexplained mysteries in more than two thousand years of human history. From Atlantis, the Bermuda Triangle, and Bigfoot to Tunguska, vampires, and zombies, the most fascinating subjects previously featured in Colin Wilson's popular Unsolved Mysteries Past and Present, The Encyclopedia of Unsolved Mysteries, and The Unexplained now appear along with new, equally mystifying material in one tremendous revised and updated volume. In it, Wilson shares his expert research and investigation into seventy-five of the world's most enduring mysteries, among them crop circles and crystal skulls, monsters and meteors, pyramids and poltergeists, the Hope Diamond and the Holy Shroud of Turin.

Regarding the Wilsons' Research the Mammoth Book of Unsolved Mysteries.......2006-01-08
I was browsing the stacks at a local Hastings when I found Damon and Colin Wilson's book in the bargain book section. Of course I have an interest in strange events and so picked it up and thumbed through it. Seems the Wilsons had included the deaths of pro-Communist terrorists (RAF) or Baader-Meinhof in the book. That somehow, and rather mysteriously, they had come to a violent end behind bars. The authors then assumed that with the death of the ringleaders, the terrorist organization had itself come to an end. Would that it were so.
I was with the U.S. Army from about August of 1979 to the spring of 1983 stationed in Germany. What was then known as the Bundesrepublik of Germany. The first inclination that I had of the very real and present danger of terrorism, was when I was on leave (1981 or thereabouts) taking my mother and a friend around to see the sights in Germany. My mother being herself of German blood. Before she was to return to the states and myself and my friend to take up our duties with the Army; we visited the Munich (Munchen) Oktoberfest. Did not make it back before the last of the trains had left for the day and so parked in the train station at Munich before departing the next morning. We had barely returned and were watching the news and were horrified to learn that a suicide bombing had occurred at the Munich Oktoberfest. We were only hours from having been caught in the middle of it. Baader-Meinhof must have gained quite a following from disciples, followers or sympathizers. Because the Marxist terrorist threat to West Germany and its government re-emerged by the early 80s and the Polizei were in a constant battle with them until the late 80s. Along the way, NATO, stationed in Germany, and the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Germany came under threat of bombs, etc. from this pro-Communist terrorist organization. It got bad enough that we were generally restricted to base and the guards were armed. I assume that Baader-Meinhof did not exactly come to an abrupt end when the ringleaders "died mysteriously" behind bars in 1977. That for a long time afterwards, they were still active and still very much a threat.
Thorough, Sometimes Repetitive, Sometimes Interesting.......2004-02-07
The Mammoth Encyclopedia of the Unsolved is certainly what it claims to be. It is indeed mammoth as it ranges from the paranormal to more historical mysteries. The authors', Colin Wilson and Damon Wilson, pet theories become abundantly clear as certain themes and concepts are repeated throughout the book, such as their ideas concerning poltergeists which are shoe-horned into far too many of the entries outside of the one for poltergeists. They also have an annoying lack of scepticsim concerning anything paranormal yet pull away the cobwebs from more historical occurences with great ease. Still this book will be a treat for anyone looking for a one volume compedium of weird things. You may roll your eyes at some of their conclusions but you still keep reading.
Unsolved mysteries for the "pros"..........2003-08-30
What makes this book by Colin Wilson pleasantly unpredictable is that it contains far more "unsolved mysteries" than the "usual" and expected `Bermuda triangle`, ÙFOs`, `Bigfoot`and so on. Sure enough it contains entries about those phenomena, but it goes deeper than these and explores stories such as those of Fulcanelli or Junius (both brilliant and yet unknown stories), a more detailed account on the -possibly- false identity on the man who spent 40 years in prison claiming he was Rudolph Hess (more than likely he wasnt) , a good comprehensive and all-inclusive "report" on whether Homer actually existed and what he really did write etc.. I read books on such matters on a systematic basis and yet i found that a good portion of the ones
contained here I`d never heard before.
I`ve used quotation marks widely on the above paragraph trying to stay in line with Wilson`s -always- careful treading when he deals with theories about unsolved mysteries.
If you`re a fan of Colin Wilson you`ll find this to be another excellent contribution of his to the "paranormal" field of research (or to be somewhat more precise: to the not so normal field of research).
If you`re not familiar with this incredible and ultra prolific researcher this book is a great one to start from as:
-it recquires no previous specialised reading on your part (Wilson will keep you in the know with several references and explanations throughout your reading)
-ìt`s a wildly fun book even for those that might`ve never picked up a reading on such matters
-and, it`s Colin Wilson. That, at least for the insiders, should suffice..
Book Description
"The Way We Think is a dazzling tour of the complexities of human imagination."--George Lakoff, co-author of Philosophy in the Flesh and Where Mathematics Comes From. In its first two decades, much of cognitive science focused on such mental functions as memory, learning, symbolic thought, and language acquisition--the functions in which the human mind most closely resembles a computer. But humans are more than computers, and the cutting-edge research in cognitive science is increasingly focused on the more mysterious, creative aspects of the mind.
The Way We Think is a landmark synthesis that exemplifies this new direction. The theory of conceptual blending is already widely known in laboratories throughout the world; this book is its definitive statement. Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner argue that all learning and all thinking consist of blends of metaphors based on simple bodily experiences. These blends are then themselves blended together into an increasingly rich structure that makes up our mental functioning in modern society. A child's entire development consists of learning and navigating these blends.
The Way We Think shows how this blending operates; how it is affected by (and gives rise to) language, identity, and concept of category; and the rules by which we use blends to understand ideas that are new to us. The result is a bold, exciting, and accessible new view of how the mind works.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Brilliant.......2007-02-23
The bad stuff first: this book almost has to be read twice. The idea of conceptual blending has many different sides (the different types of conceptual blend, compression within a blend, how certain grammatical structures call up this or that blend, etc.), and there is just no way to provide all of these different sides at once. The first few chapters are therefore pretty rough going, since some of the material that you should ideally have in order to understand them does not come until much later. Part of this is due to imperfect arrangement on the part of the authors, and part of it comes from the complexity of the topic itself. This is not a beach read by any means.
However, if you can plow through the first few chapters, the ideas within are extremely useful. The authors explain metaphor as a special case of what they call conceptual blending, which can also explain how certain words have the meanings which they do (e.g., "prevent," "fake," "eligible") as well as how certain syntactical structures call up meanings in our minds (e.g., "Joe is my boss," "jailbait," "houseboat"). The point is that literal meaning is not the default that our mind uses, with metaphor being the mind's last resort: rather, conceptual blending is the basis for how the mind constructs meaning, with judgments about the literal or metaphorical nature of meaning being added on later.
This book works marvellously well alongside certain works by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson (e.g., Philosophy Made Flesh). Definitely a good addition to your library if you're curious about the nature and origins of language, meaning, and higher-order rational thought in human beings.
Intriguing but Vague.......2006-01-06
The beginning of the book is very good with a perspective on scientific thinking.
The idea of blending is then clearly explained with a multitude of examples. But it is overdone with too many examples and too many question and answer discussions. One has almost the impression that the text is in fact intended as a study supplement.
But in the end one asks, isn't this all just another word for association and so what any way. It is vague in a way not to be useful.
Nevertheless the text is referenced by many cognitive linguists and is a source of inspiration apparently.
Hidden Complexities are Revealed.......2005-09-24
The book is a sort of complement for the authors previous works (1994, 1996, 1997). It is an outstanding work as it clarifies the ways nets, frames, blends and intregations function. It is a didactical book because it goes and returns with examples which help us understand its terminology and content. It is a book of great help for all the ones interested in analysing texts competently and understanding how our mind uses linguistic expressions (triggers)to build up meaning.
The Way We Think: Conceptual Blending and the Mind's Hidden Complexities.......2005-09-22
Product came promptly, in good condition
great topic but literary-esque treatment of it.......2005-05-14
I like cross-disciplinarity, the world needs it, but when one crosses to fields with rigorous methods, highly standardized and specified and well competed in, from fields with ambiguous methods, not at all standardized hence with only vague impressionistic competition in them, the result is great topics pursued with halting, poorly executed methods. In the case of this book, cognitive science topics pursued with literature department, mapping of metaphors, methods produces a highly repetitious book with not a single insight, not one (not one, not more than one and not one, that is, no insights, none--am I getting through).
Simply mapping one metaphor after another, ad infinitum, with no insights from the first mapping (any elementary school kid would produce a similar mapping if coaxed a little, I am afraid) and even less from the second, tenth, twentieth, does not produce anything but "enought pages to publish".
I have to admit I got suckered and put out my money for this thing because the topic interested me. I should have examined how the topic is treated before buying. Aw well, live and learn.

Book Description
This is a comprehensive book in five volumes that focuses on environmental fate prediction and quantitative structure activity relationship analysis. This book is like no other in that it tackles environmental fate calculations and QSAR Plots. Environmental partitioning and persistence are calculated in a generic "unit world" using standard fugacity models. This shows where the chemicals will go, relative concentrations, persistence, and important intermedia transport processes. From this information, a behavior profile emerges that can be presented in a standard format. For the series of chemicals presented in the book, QSAR Plots can be prepared by plotting these properties against molecular descriptors (e.g., carbon number, chlorine number, molar number) and relationships between properties can be explored. This helps validate the data and estimates of properties for other chemicals can be made from these plots. The chemicals included in these volumes will contain the following information:Chemical NameCAS NumberStructureMolecular MassMolar VolumeMelting and Boiling PointsWater SolubilityOctanol-Water Partition CoefficientVapor PressureOrganic Carbon-Water Partition CoefficientBioconcentration FactorHenry's Law ConstantDissociation ConstantEstimated Half-Lives in Air, Water, Soil, SedimentsFull references and methods of measurement will be given. Multiple values will be cited and a recommendation made for a "best" value.
