Book Description
"While there are critics who believe my courses are too difficult," writes Pete Dye, "the ardent golfer would play Mount Everest if somebody put a flagstick on top. . . . Unless a few golf professionals are bellyaching about my course design, I wonder whether I've done enough to challenge them." To the millions of golfers who have played his world-famous courses, Pete Dye is either a creative genius or a demonic tormentor. To play well on Pete's courses, or on any of those influenced by his ideas, you have to know Pete. Bury Me in a Pot Bunker is his own story of how he revolutionized his favorite game by designing courses that both delight and bedevil golfers. Peter and his talented wife, Alice, convert dull ground and swamps into beautiful by deadly course filled with Scotland-style mounds, deep pot bunkers, railroad ties, and tiny "target-golf" greens. Bury Me in a Pot Bunker tells the intimate story of how Pete Dye designed his celebrated courses and includes entertaining anecdotes about some of the greatest golfers in the world. It also captures Pete's essence as a humble, give-the-credit-to-someone-else gentleman whose sense of humor and optimism are legendary. Some of Pete's famous courses include Harbour Town Golf Links, Crooked Stick, The Stadium Course at TPC, The Ocean Course at Kiawah, Teeth of the Dog, Oak Tree, The Stadium Course at PGA West, and Whistling Straits. What the experts say about Pete Dye: He created some of the world's top courses [and] had a profound impact on late-twentieth-century course architecture." -- Geoffrey S. Cornish and Ronald E. Whitten The Architects of Golf "This is Star Wars golf. This place was designed by Darth Vadar." -- Ben Crenshaw on the Stadium Course at TCP Pete Dye is one of the world's leading golf course designers. For over thirty years his courses have challenged ardent amateurs and PGA Tour professionals alike. A long-running American Express campaign dubbed him "The Man Golfers Love to Hate." Pete's wife and partner, Alice, is one of the greatest amateurs in the history of golf. They reside in Delray Beach, Florida.

Pete's book is "A Hole in One" for the mind and spirit of golf lovers.......2007-05-08
You are going to love this book despite if you are a golf lover or not. It's the story of some of Pete Dye best golf courses described in a chapter base. Those who know Pete will enjoy the book since it is like talking to him in person because of the simplicity of the words chosen and the graphical description that he makes of how each course was conceived.
The story of the famous island green 17th at the Stadium Course at TPC is one of a kind. I particularly enjoy the story of "Teeth of the Dog", a course that could hardly be replicated in history since it was practically built by hand decades ago at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. It is not only the best Golf Course in the Caribbean -according to Golf Digest and many other publications- but also the birthplace of golf in the DR at this enchanted destination. I consider this course as the "Prima Donna" of the Caribbean and one of the top 20 in any most play list. I hope that in a next edition he could also include one of his most recent courses "Dye Fore" also at this destination which I partially saw in the book Caribbean Architecture: Exclusive Designs by Gianfranco Fini in Marina Casa de Campo and has a breathtaking view all over the Chavon Cannon, the Casa de Campo Marina and, of course, the Caribbean Sea.
Pete's book will help you understand why there is such connection between the player and his courses, how he makes it happened and best of all the anecdotes behind the creation of each one of them. This book is a keeper and it rating is 5 out 5 starts with any doubts. The pictures are touching; the text is like talking to Pete himself and; is a most for any golf aficionado.
What isn't to like?.......2004-12-30
Books by golf architects tend to be on the dull side for most people. They don't tell you a story of their development as architects, or how their courses evolved during the design phase, but just seem to begin and end with "see, wasn't this brilliant?"
Pete Dye is something of a mystery to many. His designs are "unique", which can be bad or good for most people. Where did his ideas come from? What influences him the most? What stories are behind his greatest feats?
In this one book, we get pleanty of answers, all in a tale that feels like you are sitting down and listening to it as it is being told. Even golfers tend to think course architecture is a dull subject, but hopefully this will change a few minds. Architecture isn't some great mysterious practice. It is an art, and the artist is often times less seperated from us than we care to imagine.
Work of a serious golf architect.......2001-01-20
Having played several of Dye's famous layouts, you realize this guy knows the game and challenges all facets of your shotmaking abilities (or should I say streches them.) Enjoyed the organization by layout. Must seem like real chapters in his life. Great book from a great architect.
Pete Dye isn't out to get you........2000-01-26
Some think Pete Dye's golf courses are tricky or too hard. The courses Pete designs are built to be fair but punnishing for the right reasons. Played right, Pete's courses offer memorable rounds to the golfer. Now, it's not Pete who designs the course but a strong team of Pete, his wife Alice and his sons Perry and P.B. (architects in their own right) as well as the site managers and crews that are hired to do the building.
You'll learn that Pete designs courses on a sheet of paper and this is where his skills lie - understanding the land offered for the course and knowing how the wind and terrain will match in creating a great experience. Courses like PGA West, TPC Stadium (Sawgrass), The Pete Dye Club, Harbour Town and many others are discussed. One chapter per course.
Pete talks to you in this book. It's not an interview but it is presented as if Pete is telling you his life's story.
For a golfer looking for lessons, these are a different kind of lesson - from the eyes of a designer (and historically gifted golfer too). You will play better golf after you read this.
When you play a Pete Dye course, you'll remember Pete's words and how Alice was a main contributor to the design you're playing.
Pete Dye is a natural wonder........1999-09-07
The whole Pete Dye story is here. Now I understand how Dye created the famous island green 17th at the Stadium Course at TPC and why Pete and his wife Alice were so heaviliy influenced by Scottish golf course design. This is a terrific book, with photos of all of his great courses.

Boring rehash of uninteresting stories.......2004-03-15
This book had the potential of being an inside expose of what happened in the TV business over three decades. Instead, it's an incredibly self-censored, lawyer-like (the author's first profession) approach to the subject of television censorship. Each chapter has only two or three examples of what he censored and most of them are NOT interesting, such as a Woody Allen movie or a controversial made-for-TV from the '80s that turned out to be not so controversial. Here is the man who was the head censor for shows like Charlie's Angels, Roots, Three's Company, Steven Bochco and others, yet he boringly focuses on a few minor movies or shows that are almost meaningless today. How about the inside scoop and specific details on what exactly he had to tangle with in the hit series?
The book is not worth reading unless you enjoy the writing style of legal briefs, where much is written but little is actually said.
Behind-the-scenes struggles at ABC between writers.......2001-08-09
Alfred Schneider served as the American Broadcasting Company's head of standards and practices from 1960 to 1990. His thirty year stint as ABC's chief "censor" gave him a unique vantage point as he strove to manage issues of evolving tastes, sensibilities and moralities of the American viewing public. With the assistance of Kaye Pullen, Alfred Schnieder's The Gatekeeper: My 30 Years As A TV Censor is essential and informative reading for students of television as a cultural medium in general, and the behind-the-scenes struggles at ABC between writers, producers, directors, and actors with the corporate administrators, programers, and executives in particular.

Challenging but not impossible.......2004-12-31
This may not be for the ones who do the NY Times Sunday puzzles in ink, but for the rest of us who enjoy a challenging puzzle I found this volume very entertaining. Each puzzle has a theme, so there are puzzles within the puzzle. Not so hard you are stumped, but takes some thought and perseverance. I thoroughly enjoyed these puzzles and hope he comes out with more soon.
These crosswords are really clever!.......2004-04-29
Don't be fooled by the cover art, which makes this book look like something you might use to keep your kids occupied on a long car trip. These crosswords are for serious puzzlers only. In fact, it might take you NINE MONTHS to finish the whole thing!
The author is an up-and-coming puzzlosopher who doesn't mess around - so don't try to give him any guff. And hey, no erasing, buddy!
Book Description
C rossword lovers will welcome this second volume of clever, challenging puzzles by David Levinson Wilk. He has devised 72 crosswords that will test solvers’ knowledge of a range of topics, covering a variety of tricky and entertaining themes. For one puzzle, you’ll have to know how much every letter of the alphabet scores in Scrabble. In another, words “jump” across black squares, while a third uses the same clues for multiple entries. And, of course, there are plenty of less experimental but equally fun crosswords, with anagrams, puns, hidden words in the grids, and other wordplay.

Perhaps the best thing about Structured Query Language (SQL) databases is the fact that so many excellent reporting products can talk to them. One of the best SQL reporting and charting products is Crystal Reports. Crystal Reports 8 for Dummies shows you how to use this product to maximum effect, even if you don't yet know the first thing about SQL, databases, or effective strategies for presenting information. It patiently reveals what you need to know, using all of the Dummies tricks--including lots of illustrations and a dose of humor--to get the facts across.
This book does a great job with stepped procedures. You find out what to do in various situations, of course, but also what Crystal Reports will do in response. This approach to procedures helps ensure that you always know what to expect as you navigate Crystal's interface. Coverage of formulas is particularly good, shedding some light on a subject that sometimes causes new Crystal users to stumble. The SQL tutorial material is quite strong as well, teaching you the essentials effectively. This book will be a big help as you extract data from databases and prepare it for use. --David Wall
Topics covered: Crystal Reports 8 for novice and intermediate users; how to manage database tables with Crystal Reports, with emphasis on extracting information from databases, performing calculations on it, and presenting the results as reports and graphics; reports; subreports; drill-downs, SQL connectivity; and Crystal's function library.
Book Description
Create presentation-quality reports that make a point and make decisions easier. This friendly guide shows you how to design database reports that tell a clear, compelling story -- from simple one-table displays to integrated presentations with all the bells and whistles. Whether your firm uses Access or dBASE, Oracle or Sybase, this book is just what you need to get more done with your data.

Great Beginnings.......2002-07-06
After reading so many of these book reviews and wondering if they were accurate, it's time to contribute, help others and affirm that reviews regarding this book are indeed accurate.
While I resented buying anything that says ..."for dummies" on it and have absolutely avoided doing so in the past, I must say that when I got my hands on this particular dummies book I was pleasantly surprised. While the others are mindlessly verbose for filler, this one is not. The writer sticks to what you really need to get started using this powerful application.
It's was a classic situation: I needed a fast start and had to produce something useful in an unreasonably short timeframe. It worked. I've used this book as the starter and also purchased "a very heavy" book for the advanced work I yet need to do. It's a useful two-pronged approach that works. Thanks to Doug Wolf for some very nice, concise work!
Great Tutorial - Goes way beyond the Manual's Tutorial.......2002-03-13
If you want a great Tutorial on how to use Crystal Reports 8.0 or 8.5 this is the book for you. Once you get a good feel for the product and you need to delve into more complex reporting needs and scenarios the product manual would be your next step... or other reference books such as CRYSTAL REPORTS 8.5 - The Complete Reference, published by McGraw Hill/Osborne.
Just what it sounds like...a good beginner book.......2002-01-28
Well this book is just what it professes to be, a book for the people who said "I've got this big program, now what?" It'll get you going on creating your first reports and getting productive on Crystal reports rather nicely and quickly. Especially if you already have reporting tool experience (just as simple as knowing how to use MS Access reporting tool or something else) you'll find it so easy to follow along!
However if you're a power user, such as an Enterprise administrator or developer looking to add Crystal Reports data to your apps this book won't completely satisfy your needs, be prepared to step up to one of the more complete references after you're done with this book. Still though you'll want to start here.
(Just as a side note: the price for Crystal Reports 8.5 the Complete Reference is cheaper here at Amazon.com than anywhere else including shipping).
Great for a quick tutorial.......2001-10-04
This book is fine for the casual user of Crystal Reports. It has good examples and directs the reader firsthand through some of the really tough topics, like drilldown and cross-tab reporting. While it is an excellent introductory book for the novice, I really can't recommend the book for a more professional user. The book lacks the depth of content required for such a complex tool as Crystal. The book for that is Peck's "The Complete Guide to Crystal Reports 8". The thing this book really lacks for the casual user is possibly a section on conversion of earlier versions of CR to version 8. Otherwise, it is an outstanding way to dive right in to report building the Crystal Reports way.
Great Update to Crystal Rpts 7.......2000-09-21
Continuing the high standards set in "Crystal Reports 6," Wolf makes fast work of learning and using Crystal Reports. The updates in the books clearly coincide with updates to the software while giving beginners immediately useful tips and tools.
Book Description
An irreverent survey in comics spanning world history from the birth of Islam to the Byzantine Empire to the Italian Renaissance.
Larry Gonick's celebrated series The Cartoon History of the Universe is a unique fusion of world history and the comics medium, a work of serious scholarship and a masterpiece of popular literature. Praised by historians as a narrative and interpretive tour de force, Gonick's clever illustrations deliver important information with a deceptively light tone, teaching us about the people and events that have shaped our world.
This long-awaited new volume covers the Middle Ages around the globe, including the origin and spread of Islam; West Africa and the cross-Saharan trade; Central Asia and the Byzantine Empire; the European Dark Ages and the Crusades; the Mongol conquests; the Black Death; the Ottoman Empire; the Italian Renaissance; and the rise of Spain, leading up to Columbus's departure for the New World. Highlighting key events and retrieving oft-neglected historical connections, Gonick offers an historical survey that is at once multicultural, humanistic, skeptical, and laugh-out-loud funny.
Customer Reviews:
Leaves out important information for comic effect.......2006-11-10
No-one can seriously expect to learn accurate history from a comic book that deals with so much material. However, I was quite disappointed to find that facts appear to have been selectively left out to produce a rationalized yet absurdist view of the universe to get laughs. I admit, I laughed in many places, except where the history was actually important to know with precision. Considering the increasing importance of history in the 21st century, this comedy may come at a price, particularly when this book is selling well and many readers may not already know any of the history covered before buying this book.
There is only one thing wrong--.......2006-06-30
with "The Cartoon History Of The Universe".
Each volume has a 7 to 10 year wait between them!
However, they ARE excellent.
A fine, well-researched history, presented in a fun graphic style.
Another goodie.......2006-06-27
History textbooks have notoriously been dreary articles that students have to slog through, often with their noses held tightly. Larry Gonick is the cure. His three volumes of the Cartoon History of the Universe has it all--historical accuracy, depth, breadth and humor. The cartoons are hilarious in themselves but they convey a deeper purpose, to show the sweep of history and the complexity of it.
I think every high school World History teacher should use the series as texts and as the only texts. The volumes show that skepticism about history is not cynicism and that a lot of what happened through out recorded history is somewhat absurd. This is itself an important lesson.
I am trained as an historian and I wish I had had these books available when I was in high school. Heck, I discovered them as a graduate student and they were still coherent and useful as background to my studies.
Larry Gonick covers the forgotten bases........2006-06-13
I read the first two volumes of this series years ago, and was thrilled to death when I found the third. I've since reread the entire series from beginning to end twice, and I'm sure I'm going to return to it again.
Volume three is an interesting progress from the first two. In this one, we get to find out about cultures and regions often overlooked by Western civilization courses. Gonick doesn't ignore Western civilization, of course, but he does a great job illuminating the Mongols, the Arabs, the Africans and even the Byzantines, which so many of us Westerners don't learn about in our public education, despite their great importance to our own history.
It would be impossible to cover everything in proper detail; if Mr. Gonick were trying to do that, he'd still be struggling through the ancient world. I wish he provided more detail about the Turks and the Russians, but to his credit, he gives more coverage of central Asian peoples than any history textbook I had throughout my own education. He provides you with plenty of basic information which you can use to deepen your knowledge about any period of history. The cartoons are great, but the fact is that there's only so much depth you can get through cartoons. Read up for yourself about whatever you want to know. Gonick is a good jumping-off point.
Volume four comes out in October, which is when he expects to cover the Americas, which have been ignored thus far. (The last chapter of Volume three was titled "Quetzacoatl," so that's a good indicator of things to come, I'd say.) I don't feel gypped that the Americas haven't been covered yet; pre-Columbian history can be sufficiently summed up in part of a chapter, and the bits that are relevant to the modern day can be plugged in effectively. I have confidence that Gonick will achieve this, too, because of the way he handled the African kingdoms in Volume three. Their influence on the Western world might not be as profound as that of, say, the Turks or the Chinese, but it's definitely worth mentioning.
Hell, it's all worth mentioning. Gonick ambitiously tries to cover everything that ever happened, and while that's damn near impossible, he's done far better than anyone else I've ever heard of who's tried.
I learned more history than I would have cared to otherwise.......2006-03-26
After having grown up with the "Amar Chitra Katha", a brilliant idea that put India's vast mythology, history, and even some classic stories and legends in comic book form, I can greatly appreciate Gonick's work here.
I give it five stars even after reading some of the criticisms because of my own perspective on the presentation of historical "fact". There's never a case where the author's perspective or opinion isn't reflected in the work. We don't notice it when we agree with most of it. But again, all this is opinion.
The Cartoon History of the Universe series lays out a frame or foundation for otherwise dreary historical matter. After reading this comic series, it's much easier to pick up a history book and build on that base or even make adjustments to suit what you find more accurate. People already in the field of history may see holes or flaws, but anyone who has already dodged that career path is now enlightened, and carries the seed of interest.
Part III continues feeding me the reasonably heavy but still very entertaining content that makes me not want to put the book down. Gonick breaks the book into digestible parts, occasionally switching to a different part of the world or another culture and eventually bringing them all together. And this third book continues to make me laugh or smile. Look how gory history can be. The humor just reminds me of how we'd try to "look back and laugh" at the end of a difficult session of history class.
I admit I may only pick up corrections and adjustments to my historical knowledge over time and as I encounter them. But at least I won't ignore them, thanks to this series.
Book Description
This book details the history of Darfur, its conflicts, and the designs on the region by the governments in Khartoum and Tripoli. It investigates the identity of the infamous "Janjawiid" militia and the nature of the insurrection, charts the unfolding crisis and the international response, and concludes by asking what the future holds in store.
Customer Reviews:
Short and excellent.......2007-09-20
People professionally concerned with genocide prevention and Darfur recommended this short but outstanding book (there are quite a few others on the crisis) when I needed to supplement my knowledge quickly. Its 134 pages of condensed information are based on prolonged and detailed work in the region and with people who know it well. The complexity of Darfur and its crisis as well as its relationship to other regions of Sudan emerge with balance, but with a clear picture of the horrors being committed. It enlarged my knowledge greatly beyond what I had gleaned from the media and a few days spent with some refugees from Darfur. It discusses events up to early 2005, its publication year, so is not quite up to date. The experts recommended it despite pointing this out, and I'm glad they did.
Swahili Time!.......2007-05-04
This book is a valuable asset to any library. The only problem I had with this book is trying to read Swahili. I took Introduction to Swahili 101 at Oklahoma City Junior College, but I guess that just was not good enough.
Instructive look at Darfur.......2007-03-31
There are plenty of serious human rights abuses in Africa which Westerners, particularly American corporations and arms dealers have strong complicity in: the 4 million dead in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia under Meles Zenawi, Equatorial Guinea under Teodor Obiang, Chad under Idriss Deby, Uganda under Museveni. One can also mention the horrors of the neoliberal economic model which African governments have followed so studiously. But Sudan and Zimbabwe seem to take up 90 percent of recent Western media reporting about abuses in the region. Both governments, vile as they certainly are, have struck independent courses via US power over the years and so are demonized in the US media. Former Senator John Danforth, US ambassador to the UN in 2004, stated on British tv in 2005 that the main reason the Bush administration made noises about Darfur in the election year of 04' was to please the voting block of fundamentalist Christians who have long believed the Sudanese regime to be satanic.
There is plenty of stuff in this book about the barbaric atrocities of the Sudanese government and the Janjiweed, the paramilitary force which acts as a proxy for the Sudanese military in Darfur.. In Darfur, the driving Arab supremacist ideology was rooted in the "Arab Gathering" group which emerged under the backing of Colonel Qadaffi of Libya in the 70's and 80's. Many in Sudan's government have been influenced by this ideology. The authors provide much quotation from these brethren who stress the need to make Darfur a purely Arab homeland and to cleanse it of non-Arab elements. Qadaffi funded the Sudanese Islamist/Arab nationalist groups Ansar and Muslim Brothers against his enemy, Sudan's then dictator Jafarr Nimieri in the 70's and early 80's. Many in these groups ended up in positions of power after the Islamist regime took power in June 1989. Qadaffi also funded Arab supremacists in Chad during the 80's, many of whom found refuge in Darfur and have since made not insignificant contributions to the violence there.
It also appears from the authors' discourse that the conflict is driven by the struggle for land and water in an area which has seen much drought, and a dwindling supply of water and arable land.....
The authors point out that Arabs of the Bagarra Rizeigat--to which the majority of Arabs in Darfur belong--have kept out of the conflict.... A not insignificant number of the janjiweed are violent criminals released from Sudan's prisons to serve in that body......
Bagarra Rizeigat have protected refugees from Janjiweed terror. The Bagarra Rizeigat chief, Saeed Madibu has resisted efforts by the Khartoum government to bribe him and terrorize him into submission. The authors seem to imply that most of the Arab tribal elites in Darfur would greatly prefer peaceful social, political and commercial interaction between Arabs and African tribes instead of the apopaclyptic ideology of a Darfur cleansed of all black people that Janjiweed leaders profess. Saeed Madibu, in a contumacious act to the Khartoum government, has resurrected meetings of Darfurian tribal elders to negotiate in an equitable fashion, land and resource issues.
One of the two Darfurian opposition groups, the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) is divided between two tribal based factions, the Fur, led by Abdel Wahid and the Zaghawa, led by Minnie Minawi. These two groups spend alot of time making war upon each other, rather than upon the Sudanese army and Janjaweed. They mention that the SLA, perhaps a joint action of the two factions, attacked Bagarra Rizeigat territory in the Summer of 2004 and burned villages, stole livestock and engaged in other such activities at which the Janjiweed are such experts but Said Madibu's forces drove them out of their land.
The JEM is much more sophisticated. Islamists disillusioned with the extreme corruption and violence of the Khartoum regime seem to make up a significant part of the JEM's leadership. In interviews with one or another of the authors, the JEM leaders disavow any association with Hassan Al-Turabi, the Islamist scholar who was Sudan's de facto ruler throughout the 90's until he lost a power struggle with the country's president General Omar Hassan Al-Bashir in 2000 and was thrown into prison. Turabi had attracted many to his cause in the 70's and 80's because he spoke of a brotherhood of Muslims regardless of race and spoke out against the extreme corruption and inequality in Sudan's society. JEM leaders, according to the authors' interview of them, think that Turabi is a disgusting fraud and don't want anything to do with him. However many of them are specifically committed to setting up an Islamic state in the Sudan, which they say will grant freedom of worship to other faiths and will fullfill the ideals of honesty and equality in government that Turabi's variety of Islamists promised back in the 80's but have made such a mockery of in practice. The leaders of the JEM are often former national and regional officials under the current regime and provide the authors with stories probably containing at least some truth, illustrating their own virtue when they were in the service of the current regime, in the midst of grotesque brutality and corruption.
The authors mention the US and UK backed Naivasha accords that ended the civil war in Southern Sudan in 2005. In that accord the oil revenues are to be evenly divided between North and South, the SPLA has become the autonomous ruler of the South and army units in the capital are divided 50/50 in membership between the SPLA and the Sudanese army. SPLA leader John Garang was made first vice president of Sudan but he died in a mysterious plane crash shortly after the Naivasha accords. However the war criminals in both the Sudan government and the SPLA were granted amnesty from prosecution.....The authors note the desire for stability in south Sudan with its strategically important oil wealth by the US and UK, the Naivasha accord backers. Darfur in contrast has no important resources.

Customer Reviews:
Great Informational Book.......2007-06-24
I found that this book offers not only the basics on seahorses but it probes into the biology, habitats, courtship rituals, and mythology associated with seahorses. Also touched upon, are the dangers that seahorses face due to loss of habitat, pollution and use of seahorses in novelty items and medicine. This book is great for anyone wanting to know more about these interesting animals. Also great for students doing research or reports. I have only one complaint. The small format of this book is bit bothersome. It was difficult to hold and read near the binding at times. While the book includes many photos, some of them would be more impressive if they were a bit larger.

Book Description
"Gomez's wonderful book documents the interplay of humans with Louisiana's coastal wetlands, especially the Chenier Plain, through the seasons...An interesting book that should help promote the value and appreciation of wetlands."
Choice
"This book will appeal to a wide audience, from those who read it for enjoyment to those who use it as a textbook or research tool.... Gomez's clear, almost lyrical style is a pleasure to read, and the imagery captures the essence of the Chenier Plain."
Robert Gramling, Professor of Sociology and Director, Center for Socioeconomic Research, University of Southwestern Louisiana
Louisiana's Chenier Plain is a 2,200-square-mile region of marshes and oak-covered ridges (cheniers) that stretches along the Gulf of Mexico from Sabine Lake to Vermilion Bay. Its inhabitants, some 6,000 people of Cajun and other ancestries, retain strong economic and cultural ties to the land and its teeming wildlife. They call it paradise...but it is a vulnerable paradise. In this multifaceted study, Gay Gomez explores the interaction of the land, people, and wildlife of the Chenier Plain, revealing both the uniqueness of the region and the challenges it faces.
After describing the geography and history of the Chenier Plain, Gomez turns to the lifeways of its people. Drawing on their words and stories, she tells how the chenier dwellers combine modern occupations with traditional pursuits such as alligator and waterfowl hunting, fur trapping, and fishing. She shows how these traditions of wildlife use provide both economic incentives for conservation and a source of personal and place identity. This portrait of a "working wetland" reveals how wildlife use and appreciation can give rise to a stewardship that balances biological, economic, and cultural concerns in species and habitat protection.
